fun, but v hard
No Comments
This instructor is not helpful at all when it comes to asking questions and helping his students. Lectures are long and boring and the tests are difficult.
Bill Tanner is fairly good teacher. You really don't need the book for this class, eventhough he says that you do. If you study your notes really hard, you'll ace the class.
Very hard, but very good. You will learn a lot.
His tests are hard. Half the tests are half multiple choice and half is short answer. He marks the answers wrong if there are any spelling errors. His lectures are clear, interesting, and simple. There is no way you can leave his class confused and if you do he is always available to help.
Great teacher. Need to attend all his lectures to have a good grade
Terrible
Bill Tanner is a great teacher. If you are into Biology he is the right guy to take this class from. You really have to earn your grade though. Don't miss class, take lots of notes and you will pass the class.
Super nice guy with very clear lectures. The tests are difficult but 90+% of everything is straight from the lecture so take good notes. If you ever need help he is very into the subject and willing to help. I would recommend this professor if you really want to learn about biology.
He is an awesome teacher! His lectures are really understandable and he draws lots of examples. You need to go to class to get a good grade. 90% of the lecture is the test.
He is a really good teacher and knows what he is talking about. He is really nice and willing to work with you. you learn alot and his test are 90% from his lectures and the rest from the book. over all a good class!
Bill explains things really clear, a lot better than most other teachers around. The tests are really hard either. He knows his stuff and sometimes likes to show it, but if you go to class everyday and do his study guides you'll get a good grade. I recommend him for sure.
Bill is a great professor. He explains things well, knows his stuff and has a love for science. His tests are somewhat hard but how else are you supposed to learn? Take good notes; everything on his tests he definitely will have gone over in class. Highly recommended.
Awesome guy. Very willing to teach you until you understand it clearly. Explains extremely well. Take notes and study them, do this and you will do well.
Great teacher!! Highly recommend him!! Make sure you take good notes!! He's very clear and really know what he's teaching. He provides weekly practice quizzes online just to help you test yourself and they really help on tests. Got an A =)
He is incredibly genius! He doesn't even have notes when he gives lectures, and he explains everything so perfectly. He doesn't let you leave the class if you're confused. This class will push you though, and you need to study every day to understand. You don't have to read the book unless you don't understand the notes.
Awesome guy with great personality! He is amazingly clear with his lectures and will answer any question in a way that can be understood by all. All his tests are only on what he has coveredin lecture. He does add some extra credit questions and only here will something be asked that you would only know from reading the book.Very Highly recommended
This teacher is amazing! He is brilliant and funny. I really enjoyed the way he taught his lectures. Also, if you record his lectures and listen to them again it really helps to improve on test scores.
Great teacher if you want to learn the subject.
He really knows his stuff but if this is your first Biology class or you do not feel that you are good at Biology, then I would not take it from him. He was extremely hard!! I really had to study so hard to get the grade I got. But if you love Biology, he is great:) You don't really need a book.
Great professor! I took Plant Biology and fully expected it to be incredibly boring. Turned out to be the most interesting science class I've ever taken. All classes are lectures, and you need to attend and take good notes. He only tests on what he's covered in lecture, you don't really need a book. Exactly what I expect in a college class.
He is very smart but is unclear about what he expects of his students. He goes very fast. He uses the phrase "well that's nice" a lot.
This guy is amazing. Will sit with you for as long as you want. If you have questions he has answers. Really knows his stuff. Probably the best teacher at the college. I DID have to study hard for his exams but biology is just one of those subjects. He says, "well that's nice" a lot lol. Super nice guy too.
He is much better than most of the BIO teachers. The tests aren't bad and he gives weekly study quizzes (not graded) and the test mostly comes from those so I would recommend Will and you should do great just study and stay on top of everything
Excellent professor! He is extremely organized and presents information in a very clear, concise, and easy to follow manner. Don't expect not to have to work though, attendig his lectures and taking good notes is parmount to your success. My last bio class was in 1986 and I got an A! Highly recommend completing posted quizes=exam material.
Fabulous!! I love him...would highly recommend
Lots of lecturing, no homework other than studying. 3 exams and then a final. He covers everything that will be in the exam in his lectures. TAKE GOOD NOTES and STUDY!!! Tough class, but great teacher. This guy is a genius when it comes to biology.
DO NOT BUY A BOOK!! It's super expensive and I didn't even touch it and I got a 98%. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING you need to know, he talks about. Attend, write down what he writes down, study it, and you'll get an A. You have to try to get anything lower. Again, DO NOT BUY THE BOOK!!! It is such a pitty I wasted so much money.
Got sidetracked easily so it is hard to know what things you have to remember. Pretty good teacher.... Pretty tough material
Intro to Plant Biology is a very intense class. Not recommended for 1st time biology students. He doesnot follow the study at all for this class, its not on any tests nor quizzes at all, except perhaps the vocabulary, which is alot for each chapter. 6 quizzes/3 tests, ione 5 page paper =15 pts no higher.Get off topic easy.Great, interesting labs.
Study not used on any tests or quizzes..Any chapter info, lab notes or class notes are fair game for test questions. There is no clear idea at all what will be on the test in which question format. He can add new testing material at the last minute!!
Make up tests are essay format. He is great at lecture with how he explains things, and drawings. The labs are great and interesting, along with being fun!! You DEFINITELY need to study your text books, class notes and such, there is NO way to know what the 6 quizzes/ 3 tests will cover from all that material
He writes his own tests so as long as you take notes and study them you will do fine on the tests. Really good teacher!!!
This professor should be at a Major University. Brilliant man. Tests were hard. Lot's of information is covered. I walked away well educated, but it dropped my GPA.
Best professor I've ever had, in any subject. Very organized and great lectures. Tough tests, but it's material he's covered in class so take good notes and you'll do fine.
I was unprepared for how hard this class was going to be. I'm not going into Biology, he's super smart, so I had a really hard time following his lectures.
Bill is an extremely good teacher. He is very thorough and always available outside of class to answer questions. He gives lots of help including practice quizzes, which were the key to understanding what he expected you to know for the tests. A++ teacher
This professor was very helpful, he always would mention to those who need help, to come to his office if they have any questions regarding a topic they didn't understand in class. He included his office hours so students know when they can get help from them.
He gives a comprehensive final but if you study you will be fine.I recommend him, he knows his stuff.Attend the class regularly and take notes. Tests are from what he covered in class and u get 5 extra cr. questions in each tests. Study the notes always, that's how i got an A.
Dr. Tanner is smart and precise in his teaching. His lectures go fast, but if you stay alert and pay attention, you should be fine. Tests are all multiple choice, matching, and short answer. Provided practice quizzes are extremely helpful. He was my favorite professor this semester, can't wait for BIOL 1620 with him!
DO NOT take BIO 1610 from this professor. He is incredibly vague on what he wants his students to study. He does offer online study guides, but that is never reviewed. never any homework. His tests are short answer, fill-in-the-blank, and multiple choice with options ranging from A-J. Make sure you spell well too, because he will mark it wrong!
He's extremely unhelpful with what you need to study. I studied 6+ hours for one exam and still got a D even though I'm an A student and attend regularly. His multiple choice answers give up to 12 choices. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone. Difficult material, expects you to understand and know DETAILS.
Dr. Tanner is AWESOME. HOWEVER, his classes are HARD. He gives you the tools you need, it's up to you to use them. Grades are entirely based on tests. To pass, YOU NEED to go to class, take notes, do the quizzes and chapter reviews online, and being in a study group was VERY helpful. Bill is very understanding, and very helpful if you need it.
Has a higher pass rate than other biol teachers. He was very clear in lectures and answering all questions. He would review the tests with the class when he passed them back. No homework, but if you want to pass you have to study hard. Test questions come straight from the notes. Offers some extra credit. Great teacher, made biol fun and easy.
Dr. Tanner is really nice and is good at answering questions. The class I had him for was Bio1620 which was mostly a lot of memorizing. His tests are a combo of multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, compare-contrast, and short answer. All test questions were based off lecture material so be sure to attend lectures. Grade is based on tests only.
Terrible class. One of the more boring professors. His tests are really hard.
Professor Tanner LOVES biology and does a great job teaching! He is very involved and helpful. Biology is not an easy course, be prepared to study and put in hours of work. He expects you to study, but gives you all the information you need to get an A in the class. Be prepared, his tests are thorough.
If you don't study A LOT, DONT TAKE THIS CLASS! Biology doesn't come easy to me, but I am a dedicated studier so I was fine. Didn't touch my book. You need to take thorough notes & you'll be prime. He is hard but he is a GREAT professor. I highly recommend him. He knows his stuff. My peers with other professors wish they would've had him.
Professor Tanner is a very thorough teacher, which is great for those who will go on to higher Biology classes. He is willing to help and is available to talk in his office anytime. Very fair, and LOVES biology.
really, really horrible teacher. expected you to memorize a lot of small things. his tests were a joke, for multiple choice, he gave you at least 10 different options to choose out of for one question. lectures were boring but contained so much information you could barely recall after class. he wasn't understanding of peoples circumstances.
Excellent teacher with outstanding knowledge of the course. He NEVER used a PowerPoint presentation, and everything was explained step by step, with easy-to-understand diagrams. Tests were extremely reasonable, and if you follow the study guide provided (tells you every detail you need to get an A+), you will ace the tests.
Bill is passionate, witty and experienced in what he teaches. By its nature this was not an easy class. However, I can't imagine it being more compelling or entertaining in any way. Oldschool presentation format (whiteboards and expos), 4 tests and the lab makes up your grade. His practice quizzes were true to what was found on the test. Great!
Highly recommend Bill Tanner. His lectures were engaging, he has a great personality, and he is always willing to help students when they need it. If you regularly attend class, pay attention, and take good notes, you'll do fine on the test and will barely need to crack your textbook. Great instructor.
You NEED to study, especially if you're not passionate about bio. Interesting stuff, but honestly fill out the practice quizzes he provides for you. Take notes, try to write down the little stuff he doesn't write down. Ask for help. Tests aren't long, but memorize everything. Matching, multiple choice, fill in blank format.
He is amazing!! This is such a hard class, but he is great at helping you understand it. He is always more then willing to help you extra in his office if needed. Be prepared to STUDY!! His test are fair, and if you do the online quizzes, you'll do fine on the test. He didn't give us any homework. I really recommend him!!
Great professor! Bill Tanner is one of my favorite all-time professors. He teaches at the university level. I learned so much and it really prepared me for tough science classes at the U once I transferred. So many students on here are complaining that he wants you to know "details", not really a fair critique for a college science class guys...
No homework, your grade is made up from 3 test, lab score, and a comprehensive final. Tests are multiple choice, matching, fill in the blank/short answers. If you do the optional weekly quizzes he posts for you to study, you are insured a great grade. I would have gotten an A, but the Lab score brought my grade down.
I loved Bill's class! He is really passionate about the subject and I loved that. No assignments, just 4 tests. Show up, take good notes, read the chapters to solidify your understanding of the concepts and you will do very well. Would definitely take classes from him again.
This class was an easy A. Make a flashcard for every question he puts in the study guide, the tests are those EXACT questions! 3 tests and a final.
Professor Tanner is very knowledgeable and easy to understand when he lectures. His tests are tough but if you're dedicated to studying then this class is a great fit for you. He is a botanist and knows almost everything there is to know about plants and often relates many topics to plants or botany. Mr. Tanner is very passionate! Great professor!
His lectures are long and boring old school style wear right every thing up on the white broad know engaging power points. He goes over a lot every day no home work has quizzes every week that you don't get graded for. He tests you on 5 chapters at a time & expect you to memorize ever little thing. Also like to turn biology in to a chemistry class.
You take Bill get ready to read ever ch & go over with a fine tooth comb. No home work study weekly no grade quizzes take good notes & try to stay awake for his boring lectures remember all of the little chemistry stuff like with the Krebs cycle & so on go over the definitions study hard. 3-50 qwestion 5 ch test & final with a lot to memorize.
He is very tough. You cannot prepare for a test because he makes it up and says he can change it anytime. take all notes from the blackboard and those are the thing that could be on you quiz and test. Labs are long and if you have health issues then you miss out on the tests and quizzes because you were not there for the notes. very hard class.
Dr. Tanner is a great lecturer. All of his material comes straight from his head. He is very knowledgeable. The class could drag sometimes, as it is pure lecture from start to finish. Tests are fairly hard, about 80% of questions from the study guides, 20% from lecture. Only 3 tests plus final on grade, no assignments or homework. Great guy.
I enjoyed William (Bill) as a teacher! I love the way he is able to explain everything in a way that makes sense and in his own words from his vast knowledge. He really knows his stuff, and he sometimes tells really interesting related stories. He writes all you need to know on the board so notes and studying is easy as long as you go to class.
Amazing professor. Belongs at a 4 year university. Very interesting lectures. Clear and concise. Tests are taken from class notes. I only cracked the book a few times. I found it helpful to rewrite notes after each lecture. Comprehensive final was hard. Advice for the final: review the material frequently throughout the semester to keep it fresh.
One of the best professors I've ever had. I normally hate lecture classes, but I didn't miss a single class of his because I enjoyed it so much. He is great at explaining the material as well as gives lots of visual aids. Also incredibly nice person. He's been teaching this course since it started at the school.
Professor Tanner always gave fantastic lectures. He explains biology in such a way that you really walk away with a good understanding of the material. His tests are difficult, but if you attended and really paid attention to his lectures you will receive a decent grade. Also, word to the wise, take his (non-graded) practice quizzes before testing.
Bill is an incredible professor. You should go to every class because the notes he gives during lecture are exactly when you're tested on. He gives you home quizzes to study from. He's funny, engaging and I'm so glad that I took this class from him. It wasn't easy, but with good study habits you can do well!
Mr. Tanner is awesome, he doesn't use PowerPoints and really explains the subject in a great way. Take good notes and work on the study guide and all of the practice quizzes, you don't get credit for them but your exam scores will show if you actually study!
This was one of my most difficult classes, but Bill did a great job teaching it. There were 6 quizzes and 3 exams covering mostly what he lectured on and a bit of what we did in lab. He offers extra credit on each quiz/exam and you'll have one paper due at the end. Overall, it's a tough class but doable if you show up each day and study well.
Bill is a great, engaging, funny teacher, one who can really open up your brain and pour in knowledge, if you let him. Grade is based on 4 exams and your lab grade, but don't let the idea of no homework fool you. Take good notes and use the outlines he uploads, actually study and don't miss class if you want a good grade.
He is for sure heavy on the lecture, but it his lectures are super interesting, and he will give background to help understand the why's and why not's. He will only test on things that he lectures on or specifically asks you to read outside of class, so the tests are not difficult if you pay attention and take notes. Great teacher
Awesome professor! He doesn't use power points and he writes his lectures on the white board. He gives weekly quizzes that are awesome study guides for the test. He is very nice and caring. Grade is based off 3 tests and a final and thats it.
All you need to do is go to class, take great notes, and TRY. He is probably one of the smartest professors I've ever come across. He's genuine and kind and doesn't give out any homework but that doesn't mean you don't need to study.
One of my favorite teachers! Brings a fun and interesting style to lecturing. His lectures are extensive, but he breaks everything down so you can understand extremely easily. His class has no homework, EXAMS ONLY. His exam questions are taken directly from his notes. He also posts practice tests at the end of every week. helps IMMENSELY!
He is great at explaining things. He writes everything on the board which is great for note taking. He also puts practice quizzes and course outlines on canvas. He is very helpful and cares about the students.
It is a hard class you have to be ready to read the book in your own because he does't use it in the class 50 questions on each exam and more short answers. I don't recommend him.
Tanner was an amazing teacher! If you go to class, take good notes, and TRY, then you'll pass. I HIGHLY recommend doing the quizzes and if you print them out for class he answers all the questions throughout his lecture. Read the book to better understand concepts, but just STUDY THE QUIZZES FOR THE EXAMS!!! There's 3 exams & the final.
I really enjoyed Tanner's class, I learned a lot from his class. He gives out practice quizzes for you so that you can test your knowledge on that week's lecture. If you feel comfortable with answering the practice quizzes you will most likely Pass his class. you will get 3 exams and 1 final, he his generous at grading. Very nice Guy!
This guy is passionate about his teaching and the material that goes with it. He does a fantastic job of covering most of what you would get in the reading so it really solidifies the material for you. He provides learning objectives that give very clear expectations for the exams and practice quizzes for extra preparation. Great class structure!
Prof. Tanner was an overall good guy, But his class was definitely hard for me. Your grade is based off three tests and one final. There is no homework or assignments. Hes very lecture heavy So be sure to take a lot of good notes. If youre like me, and you dont retain information well From just taking/studying notes, you will struggle.
Hardest class I have taken so far and I am 50 plus credits in at SLCC. Attend every class, take good notes, and do the weekly questions. Make flash cards of those question and answers plus any thing he points out in class that you should know. There is a lot of information you will need to learn quickly so review your notes often.
This was my 2nd time taking Biol 1610, and this class was still difficult. STUDY, STUDY, and STUDY! Since this class is so intense, and the tests are extremely difficult, Bill sticks to the lectures and has no homework. Which is both a pro and a con. You have to basically study your butt off for the tests and pray you can pass.
Bill is probably my favorite college professor I've had. He's caring, witty, and intelligent. I felt he broke down the concepts in a way that was easy to understand, and relate-able. Go to his review sessions, he basically gives you the answers to the exams. If you actually try, you'll pass.
Bill is a great guy and knows his stuff but I would not take a class from him again. I feel like he lectures on far more material than you end up being tested on which makes studying a nightmare. Your grade is based on 3 tests, a comprehensive final and your lab grade. Everyone in my study group failed the class, there's some perspective.
He only grades on what is said in lecture so as long as you come to class, take good notes, and study every night after class you'll be just fine. He tries to make it easy to understand and wants to help all of his students pass as long as you ask for help. Great teacher and funny too! I deffinatley reccomend.
Lab was so much fun and Will is hilarious you really see his personality in lab. All you have to do is print out the lab for that week, attend class, then turn lab in before you leave and you'll get an A! Easiest class I've ever taken and so much fun :)
Bill was the BEST professor I ever had. He lectures from his mind, not reading from a slideshow. Everything he writes on the board WRITE IT DOWN. He mainly tests from his lectures. I didnt even read the book and did well in class. Study, study, study. He has outside hours and always willing to help! I am so glad I got to experience having him teach
I didn't enjoy this course at all. Bill is a great guy, but I don't agree with how he taught this course. Bill's 1620 course is one of those classes that's purely memorizing arbitrary information and little-to-no critical thinking. If memorizing stuff, regurgitating it for the test, and forgetting after it is your thing, then this course is for you
Taking Biol lab with Bill is a good choice. He's very passionate about the labs and he know's what he's talking about. He's also very willing to help and is a generous grader. Show up, make an effort, and you'll pass.
