Will have no problem failing you
Read the book!!! That's where the exam questions come from. He tries to scare you off at first. A lot of what he lectures you could find in the book, but it's more funnier in class.
He is a hard professor because he is new and likes to fail students. Last semester only three people got A's and the rest is barely passing. It should be a fun course but he puts fear in everyone who comes to class. He likes to pick on people too and make them feel stupid for not answering his questions.
he has favorite students, he grades u base on your attendance and exams, does not lecture about what it's on the book (which is what its on the exams)
very hard, does not lecture whats on the test you have to read the book outside of class to pass, he favors people and is pretty unfair, teaches in a very biased manner towards his own opinion the only upside is he is really funny this class would best be taken with someone else
He is an O.K. He plays favorites for sure and you have to participate in his class (stand up in front of the class somehow, mainly skits). His tests are REALLY hard, you actually have to read the WHOLE book and the chapters are long and sometimes confusing (you may have to read them twice). He is interesting but unfair. Avoid him if possible.
The class itself was interesting. Tests were HARD. A lot of reading and time was recquired. Only opportunities for points were tests and big assignments. The first day he said "don't expect to get an A". Most of the class got a C or D
horrible proffesor and definatly does have favorites. he gets a kick out of failing you. avoid him at all costs
It's not an easy class, and it does require reading, studying, and participation. It's a *fun* class, though, and Thatcher is really funny. He comes off as mean, but he's fair and willing to work with students who actually want to work. Don't expect an easy A - I'm a good student, he liked me, and I got a B. Really, *great* class and professor.
He comes off hard, but really tries to help you if you struggle. The other raters here (if you see they cant spell and are not there for learning, only easy A's) need to grow up and understand this is college and he wants you to learn. He is a great prof.
This professor truly wants you to get something out of his class. you do have to read the book to pass the class because that's what the tests are based on, but that should be a given. He teaches by discussion (most of the time straying from the book), which I like (but not for everyone). Looking for an easy A? Avoid. Want to learn? Hes your guy.
Good Teacher, tries to scare you into not taking his class, pretty much just to weed out the kids who really shouldn't be in college anyways, I was thankful he did this. Really nice guy! A little confusing on direction, but it all made sense at the end. Makes you read to book, but you really don't need to, waste of time.
On the first day of class he scared the hell out of me, however, he is a really great professor. This class is definitely not an easy 'A,' but it is attainable if you study for the tests, and contribute in class discussions. If you pay attention in class you'll notice he tells you exactly what is going to be on the tests (midterm and final).
He scare students on the first day of class and seem very hard, but overall he is a very nice and cool instructor. Not the best instructor I took and not the easiest class, but if you put effort to it you will pass.
if you want to learn, take him. But if you want an easy A, forget about it. He's pretty tough one of the teacher with the toughest exams. HS 114 has big project, midterm exam and Final. I got a B but studied like never before and would never take him again
This guy is smart about his stuff. He scares you at the beginning of the class. He is a total ass. His tests are hard and he will pick on you to answer his questions. He is a hard grader on his assignments. Don't take this class unless you have to. If you do read, read, read and ask a lot of questions if you don't get something.
He was an awesome teacher! Class was ALWAYS fun, the one class I actually looked forward to going to. You MUST read the book in order to pass with a good grade. He's not an easy teacher, but if you really want to learn, this is the guy for you!
Expects a lot out of you, but you're in college people... it's not suppose to be a cake walk. You wanna be a public health educator? You better step up and take this class. You'll learn loads on yourself and the subject matter. Best class I ever took.
He's going to try to scare you away the first day of class, but he really does care about student success, and that becomes clear when talking to him 1-on-1. Book is completely necessary, it's components are used to write all of the papers. I would recommend taking this class with a relatively easy course load if you don't work well under pressure.
He is a nice guy even though he tries to scare you the first day. He requires a lot out of you and acts as though he is the only class you are taking. You will have to spend a lot of time and dedication on his class. His projects are off the wall long and difficult.
Great professor! Definitely will learn something from this class and walk away feeling way more confident in the field of public health-behavior wise. Great experience in college.
he is a good teacher. but he is not easy at all. you must do everything that is require. he takes you serious and wants you to succeed in all your classes. he cares about you more than 90% of the professors on kampus thats why he is strict when it comes to doing work! prefer him as a teacher!
Great professor. I highly respect him as a professor, but not necessarily for his beliefs. Really cares that about students by pushing them to work hard and understand the material for the real world. Not easy, but def doable class. Consisted of 4 Exams and 1 project. Make sure to read the book and come to class in order to do well on exams.
He is a hard teacher!!! Test are really hard. Avoid taking this teacher if you can.Not an easy class to take with him.
He's very up straight with you a little blunt. But he knows what he's talking about. He will push your buttons a lot! Specially if he gets to know you. He has 4 test and no final unless you piss him off. Test are straight from the book and lecture and also has you present twice 1 individual, 1 in a group. Don't ask for extra Credit! Over all good.
I learned a lot in this course. You need to have an actual interest to do good in this class.
He can push your buttons a lot, hates when students don't speak for themselves but really cares that you pass the class. He seems and can be intimidating but when you talk to him one on one he's really nice and helpful. knows his stuff & hates republicans lol
Great Professor. He actually teaches as all professors should! It is good to have professors like Dr. Thatcher. Don't be intimidated by the negative comments. Those are people that did not make an effort in the class or ask for help. He does communicate well and his classes are not impossible; Just challenging. Which is good! Good Job Thatcher.
The only professor that you will remember because he made sure you use that brain of yours. Changed my outlook on life and education. You have to respect his teaching for you to do good. Read the book, listen, and do your HW. Test are straight from book and lectures. If you can get an "A", you'll get a great reference from him. Take him.
I wasn't quite sure if to take him or not but I decided to take him. I wished I had studied for a the last exam, which completely lowered my grade. I did great in the projectpaper. He is the professor that you will never forget, you will actually learn in his class. He is actually great professor, if you ask him he will help you, he will find time
Definitely not the easiest class, but I have learned so much by taking his class. You have to do a lot of reading in this class. There are only 2 exams and one big projectpaper that you work on throughout the semester. Dr. Thatcher really pushes you to do your best, that's why he's such a great teacher!
I think Dr. Thatcher has been one of the best instructors that I have had at State and community college. I can respect an instructor that is tough because they want to produce quality students. If you can't take his personality, good luck in the real world. One of the few classes I have taken that actually taught me something.
Ok, Dr. Thatcher scared me the first day of class and I felt so incompetent but I am so glad I stayed in his class. I have learned so much about myself, health education, and public health. He is a tough professor but pushes you to really work for your grade and learn the material. He is a realistic professor and that is something I appreciated.
One of the most hardest professors I've had from the 3 years I've been in colleg.! He really tries to discourage students about the field of public health. Why does he have a degree in public health if he is going to discourage students and tell them they have no future with a bs in public health? Class is based on tests and they are pretty hard
Dr. Thatcher is often criticized for being tough on students but he is doing the right thing by making you earn your grade (an A is definitely possible). His class is very eye opening and worth taking. There are two exams and a behavior change project. Start early and take notes so at the end of the semester it will be easy to complete.
He is a great lecturer and is well organized. 1 midterm, 1 final (comprehensive 80-90% new 10-20% old), 1 presentation, 1 paper. His test are difficult and does not curve. Studying PPT slides and attending class will not be enough if you want to get an A or B in the class. You must read the book and articles posted as well.
I think he is a very rude professor, downgrades students and faculty on the first day. Claims he is the best professor you will ever have at Fresno State and that he's to over qualified to even work there but he does it because he wants help. Doesn't seem to genuinely care about students, thinks he better than everyone else
Thatcher was very intimidating the first day of class. However, he is one of the best professors I ever had. HIs lectures are great and full of a lot of useful information. His tests are TOUGH & require a lot of studying & understanding of the material. He does not give study guides but gives hints throughout the course of what will be on the test.
BEST TEACHER EVER. He uses a scare tactic the first few weeks to wake up his students. You have to work hard in his class, but he takes interest in all of his students and will do anything for them. He relates the material to what you face in the profession. Great person to speak to for professional advice.
First day of class I was very intimidated. However, he is hands down one of the best professors I have had at Fresno State so far. You NEED to stay up to date on reading the chapters if you want a passing grade. Does not give study guides for exams (which are mainly application questions) but the review questions after each chapter help!
Do not let others influence your decision on not taking this professor. I did that! He is by far the best teacher I have taken. He challenges your thinking, he wants you to form an opinion, and he wants you to be aware of current events. You will have to read the book. Test information from book, one presentation, and group debate.
Not what I expected, needs a history lesson in the 1st amendment. Completely detached from reality and the law. We can do better for sure.
Not a good instructor. Gets angry at times. Very opinionated. Tough grading. Seems to give higher grades to some and not to others. Also does not respect students rights to free speech.
So far separated from reality its sickening.
Amazing teacher. I admire the practical experience I gain from any course taught by Thatcher. He does not require you to attend class but if you are serious about your schooling you will show up. Quality teacher.
I really like Dr. Thatcher's teaching methods. We discuss many controversial topics but he is not so against one topic that he will not allow discussion from both sides. Even if he disagrees with your standpoint, he will help/aid a student learn to think critically from both perspectives. I have learned so much in this class. Apply yourself.
By far the best professor I have taken thus far. Great style of course, lots of group work, group debates, group research paper as well. Teaches you how to public speak, work in a team, and critical think. Quizzes through iClicker, Group Presentations, Group discussions, and controversial documentaries which we discuss afterward. Highly recommend!
Worse prof. I ever took in my college career. I am sorry if you have to take a class with him! He puts down his students and believes he is the smartest person on campus. I honestly wish I never had to take a class with him because he really lowered my confidence. He made me feel as if I didn't deserve anything I worked for. I'll pray for him!
Dr. Thatcher gets a lot of negative flack from those who did not pass his class. However, hes by far the best professor on campus. He is not trying to please everyone by giving out desirable grades. You earn your grade by actually applying yourself. Thatcher is challenging in comparison to other non-stimulating courses but his class is worth it!
He is a great professor but it's not an easy A class. You have to work for your grade.
He's. great professor! makes you work for your grade but you will actually learn something. I enjoyed that he would make us read articles that were related to true life events. do not let others choose for you he is AWESOME!!
Learned to respect him. He can be a hard head but he REALLY does care about his students and their success. Hard grader. 1 group debate, 1 documentary research project, and weekly quizzes based on articles. Make sure to buy Grammarly because he docs major points for grammar errors. Lectures always had me shook/enlightened about the world we live in
Personality wise? Quite narcissistic, rude "Macho" demeanor. Lecture wise? Gives good lectures about real public health issues & concerns as well as debatable topics. Random pop quizzes with an iClicker that rarely works. Group project, Group Debate, Group Paper. So MAKE SURE YOU HAVE GREAT GROUP MEMBERS if you want any shot at passing the class.
You get what you put in.
Learn to respect him and his teaching style. The only professor that will make you learn anything. This class is super hard if you make it hard. Give him what he wants and you'll do fine. Go to office hours which will help your grade. U Learn to become a critical thinker in this course and you will use what you learn in this class in other classes
Was consistently rude and demeaning to his students, borderline in an unprofessional manner. Condescending and difficult when seeking clarification. Was overall a difficult and unrewarding course.
the class is about behavior modification but he uses it to only talk about politics and manipulate students in the political world. I tried to show up and attend but it drove me crazy. You are not allowed to have your laptop to take notes and cell phones can NEVER been seen. He takes a simple subject and makes it sound difficult when its not.
Dr. Thatcher is amazing, I truly respect his teaching style. There are four major assignments: mid-term, final, Behavior Change Project (presentation and paper). You will walk away with an enhanced perspective on your education and your future. I definitely recommend him and make sure to take his class very seriously.
I took this course to fill lower GE requirements and am really glad that I picked Dr. Thatcher. He gets a lot of bad reviews because his class is difficult, but just make sure to pay attention during his lectures and STUDY for his exams. They are mostly application type questions. He really makes sure that you are learning something valuable.
There are only 2 tests and a paper/project. If you don't do well there, you're screwed. His lectures are excellent and thought provoking. He is a good teacher. Sadly, he abandoned us during the COVID crisis, literally left us to "self direct" our studies. No zoom sessions, nothing. I paid him to teach and he quit.
Professor thatcher is a very good teacher. I was hesitant at first because he can come off intimidating and mean at first. But he is a very helpful and understanding teacher. Dont be late to class cause he doesnt like when students are late. The class consists of a lot of group and partner projects but as long as you put in the work you will pass
When we still had in-person classes, he was super engaging and informational. He's very good at what he does. The week before covid hit, he told us he hates teaching online so when we switched to online, it was all independent work. Considering we will continue online, be prepared to do ALOT of work by yourself and make sure you read!!
Rude, not accessible/helpful/present at all during covid. Didn't lecture. Exams (3) are super hard. Expects us to know material. A writing assignment due each week from textbook (so repetitive). 3 Peer reviews after each submission. 10-page paper, which you can write from your previous assignments. 1 video submission (7 min.) about your journey.
My least favorite professor is WILLIAM THATCHER. He has got to be one of the worst professors during the pandemic to take. Not only is he lazy in grading, but he also grades harshly. Yes he will give you full point for the assignments for you behavior plan, but nope! The last assignment he gives with the most points will HURT YOUR GRADE.
He is a tough grader, but a good teacher. He is very accessible to talk to out of class, replies super fast. He is willing to help and give good feedback. There is no question when things are due, and organized. Some dislike his straight forward personality but I liked it, made me laugh. He says it how it is. Great Professor.
This professor is more interested in talking down to students for missing deadlines and making mistakes than actually teaching. His classes are super easy if you can stand his rambling emails and condescending attitude. An actual quote from an email, "A am concerned about the critical thinking ability of your generation." Worst "professor" ever.
The most egotistical, condescending Dr. I've ever come across. He has a reputation for being difficult and he does not disappoint. Avoid if you can, I, unfortunately could not. He has impossible standards and won't be pleased with any of your work. He cannot communicate through email, he is confusing. When asked to clarify, he replies w/ insult
I am a straight A student, and NEVER in my whole college career have I taken a professor so hard on grading !! He does not seem to care about his students. He is very vague with assignments and even when you email him to get clarification, he is rude and condescending. DO NOT TAKE HIM, SAVE YOURSELF PLEASE!!
(ONLINE)This is a group-based class, you will work with the same people for the whole semester! Four papers, but the fourth is your final product, so its essentially your previous three condensed together. You do reviews for other groups paper And provide constructive criticism. One multiple choice final exam which is based on the book!
Not sure if it was his first time having an online class, but his instructions on group projects & assignments were so confusing and unclear! The whole class was confused most of the time on what we were doing or what he wanted from us. Then he would send out messages basically calling us dumb, because we didn't know what to do....
I took him in person this semester and I expected the worst after reading the reviews he had here. Turns out he wasn't that bad. We had absolutely no homework or anything that was graded besides the test. If you want to get an A in this class then you definitely have to ace all of the tests, since those 3 are the only things graded in this class.
This is my first bad grade by taking this class. None of the assignments are graded. The only things graded in this class are the tests. So, if you fail all three tests you basically fail the tests. What class is based on tests only? The assignments did not really make sense and were repetitive. I would not recommend this professor or the class.
Comes off intolerable but stick it out & you find out he is a great professor. He speaks his mind, some people tend to take the wrong way. There are four exams (including final), final is optional and they are more based on the readings rather than lecture. One term paper and that is it no hmwrk or extra credit given so just do great in the exams.
He is hard and difficult to understand what he will test you on. He does not prep you for the test; that is all you are graded on, 3 tests. It's really frustrating. He gives you way too much information for any person to process, the textbook, the ridiculously long PDFS, and his lectures, memorize it all. It is irritating. Avoid if you can.
Based on three exam grades only. Awful experiences throughout the course. He is proud of having a hard class that not many do well in.
Thatcher is a great professor. As long as you attend class and understand the material you should pass the class. He gives really great examples. I should finish the semester with a B
Honestly, he is not a bad teacher. At the end of the day, this is a college course, it is not supposed to be easy. Put in the work, study and you'll pass.
Thatcher is great at teaching, really knowledgeable. His class is only based off 3 exams and 1 assignment so it is really important to show up to class, engage in the lectures, ask questions and make sure to read the textbook to really understand the material for the exams. I know I would have gotten an A if I didn't procrastinate towards the end.
TAKE THIS CLASS! I am a senior and this is by far the best and most useful course I have taken in college. Attendance is mandatory but you only have to complete a group debate and a final research presentation. He is hilarious and really makes you think about how, we as the next generation, can help the public health of future generations. TAKE HIM
Dr. Thatcher is a great professor! He is pretty straight forward but he's caring and wants his students to do well. This class isn't as hard as people make it out to be. Read the book, show up to class and apply yourself. You'll do just fine.
Took him for PH 100, great professor. Has a certain personality many people do not like or feel offended by it but in reality he is really caring and loves his job
Good man, took him for two courses now. He has an aura of intimidation, but that's just his straight-forward nature. Stick with him, and he'll do what he can to help you understand the material. The concepts and exams are not difficult, but study and pay attention. The course is 3 exams and 1 project. There's an application element in the course.
He is an overall good, but intimidating professor. He truly cares about his student learning the material and will test your knowledge. The weekly reading assignments I would say weekly average out to 50-60 pages (from textbook). He grades upon three application exams and one activity paper/questionnaire (easy to complete). Recommend.
Just try to avoid him, he actually does not care about his students. His rude and makes sure to talk down on his students failing his courses.
Honestly he is one of the best professors I have ever had. However, his class is HARD. Attendance is not technically mandatory but don't expect to not attend class and get a good grade. Thatcher actually cares about his students and sets us up for the real world which is why I respect him highly. Don't take if you aren't ready for the challenge
Dr. Thatcher is very straightforward and blunt but is super caring and wants you to learn. If you want to actually learn and succeed in your academic and future career, take him. This course is not an easy A but is extremely worth taking.
Class spent rambling about habits, using students instead of DATA to prove points. He was so rude to one of his students! More specifically, they were POC, called them out for being obese....weird. Prof said his parents were doctors, SAD that he doesnt share the same humanity!
The internship with him was smooth, and he had very effective communication. He always answers his phone or text if there is any issue with an internship. All he asked for at the end was a 2,000-word essay about the experience with a layout to help write it, a time log of 120 hours, and an evaluation from your internship.
Such an interesting class that can be applied to your own life and Dr. Thatcher does a great job of teaching these concepts with examples. If you're not going to show effort in studying or attending this class, then don't take it with him because it was pretty tough. Everything you learn is from lecture!!! Glad that I took it with him.
Take this class with Thatcher only, you will learn a lot of valuable information that you can actually apply to your own life. His lectures are great and will prepare you well for exams. Do not skip class, take good notes, do your readings and you will pass. Not many points in the class ( 3 exams - 2 graded assignments). Start studying from day 1!!
This professor is intimidating. He often talks about students reporting him to the dean like it's something to be proud of. Grading is extremely harsh, in class particularly is required to pass. Hard to get an A.
Thatcher is an amazing professor, he has an honest personality which some might find offensive, but he really knows his stuff. In this class everyone speaks, if you don't speak you will fail this class. One debate presentation, and one poster presentation. Be prepared!
I wanted to drop his class after the first week but he was the only professor teaching this class and honestly I'm so glad I stuck it through. His first impression can come off as intimidating for sure but when you get to know him, he just wants the best for his students. He was one of the best professors I ever had! Expect lots of group work!
He comes off rude and frequently mentions past situations where students have tried to report him to the dean. His demeanor can feel dismissive, and while there are no formal assignments, participation is required every class session or it negatively impacts your grade. He also tends to be noticeably stricter with students who don't participate.
