Such a nice guy! Always tells stories about his teenage daughters- such a proud dad! Huge fan of Harry Potter and LOTR so class discussions are very entertaining. You will enjoy his class cause he is supercool!
hard marker.
Bill is a great professor. Just know that he's blind, okay? That means stop raising your hand in class to ask or respond to questions. He CAN'T SEE YOU! It's funny the first couple of days, but when it's halfway though the semester... Oy vey...
excellent professor, his passion comes through in his assignments and how he teaches. he leaves a lot to the students to figure out, but is always there to answer questions. he has a sublime sense of humour and marks very fairly. if you show interest, even going off topic can be fun! very recommended for you engrish scared folks!
awesome teacher! He's really motivating and an easy marker!! Gave extra 10% on Midterm marks for reciting act of MidSummerNightDream!!
He's a great teacher..lets u rewrite essays
Great teacher, loves to walk around class while lecturing (even though he cannot see where he's going). Awesome sense of humor. Definately take his class for English 101, you won't regret it.
A great, fun and enthusiastic teacher. Mr. Thompson shows a general interst in all the students and cares for their well being. A hard marker, and sometimes opinionated(in the sence that he likes to give his opinion), but extremely open to criticism, and developing new ideas
It was fun taking his class and his passion for his teaching comes out in his lectures - makes them fun and interesting to attend. A fair marker, but as usual, so long as you put in the work you should receive a good grade. Thanks to him I have a new appreciation for children's Lit.
I was so excited to take Children's Lit, and Bill made it an awsome semester. He's so passionate about the topic, and really helpful and understanding when it comes to essays and marking. I would LOVE to have him again!
He made class really interesting and fun, but I found when it came to his essays his comments didn't help me grow as a writer at all. He kept repeating the same thing over everytime I handed one in, and when I asked him to clarify (since I obviously didn't understand what he wanted) he couldn't really explain it. Nice guy, hard marker, picks faves.
Great teacher. His class is very easy. Very entertaining individual. If u gonna take ENGL 101, get the wise man.
funny teacher, makes class enjoyable. Unclear what as to what hes tryign to say. Provides useless notes so all you have to do is read your textbook. FOLLOW WHAT HE SAYS, if he says to do an assignment staight forward, do it1 dont be creative, do exactly what he says for a good mark
He know's his stuff. He is a great professor to start off with in University.
This was an enjoyable and interesting class. He is a very likable person and passionate about childrens lit. Not an easy marker on essays.
Decent Prof nice guy and definately gets some of my attention when in class. Didn't really help me become a better writer though. I would suggest his class if you just want the credit.
Such a good prof. I didnt really have an interest in english but he made it easy. his assignments are easy as well and simple. He makes english fun and tells you exactly what he wants on his assignments.Recommend getting him if you want easy marks.
excellent at what he teaches, however if you do not have the time to do everything perfect be prepared for a "C."
Bill is a decent instructor. He seemed to be critical with his marking at first, but if you go and see him for clarification, you will improve - guaranteed. Lots of class participation and group discussions involved. Also: All papers must be handed in via mail, as he is blind and uses a program to read and grade. Overall pretty good instructor.
Bill's a funny guy, and his class is very laid back. Everything he does is put up on Blackboard so if you know your material, attendance isn't really mandatory. He's very clear with his explanations as well. The two downsides are that he is a VERY hard marker, and his blindness sometimes makes things awkward if you're not used to it.
Bill is so passionate about Child lit, and it shows in his lecture. The class is a lot of work because you have ten novels to read, but it is well worth it. He is a really hard marker, but he gives you chances to make up for poor marks. I'd recommend this class to everyone, so take it!
Children's Lit with Bill was the best class I took all semester. He is very knowledgable and enthusiastic about the course. With ten novels it is a lot of reading but they are fun and easy to read. Essays are tough but he is willing to help you out in any way and gives you the opportunity to improve your mark. Excellent prof!!!
Dr. Thompson was a good teacher. Follow his directions and you will succeed in his class. Very helpful outside of class and gave you lots of input on how to improve your essays.
Hes a nice instructor..wont give off easy marks...i was 0.5 percent away from A-, but i didnt get it...
Going to class is essential for one reason, Bill is blind and that is how he marks his participation. Make sure he knows your name. He is super willing to help, and always willing to renegotiate a deadline, and overall a cool guy. Best memory, called a kid an idiot for thinking that Hugh Laurie was American.
Bill is an extremely helpful instructor. Very passionate about what he does, as his enthusiasm shows. Make sure to attend his class though, as he does have a participation mark. As he is blind, he most know your name throughout the course.
He is such a great teacher. You really do have to attend his class. He doesnt hand out participation marks unless he knows you are frequently there. Hes very knowledgeable and so helpful when you do not understand something
Dr. Thompson is engaging and fun in his lectures. Great emphasis is placed on student research and comments, therefore knowing the texts well is of the utmost importance. I had a lot of fun studying Narnia in his seminar course!
Bill was very helpful with all the feedback he presented and was he demanded of the course was very clear. His disability played into his teaching minimally and was overall a very great professor. He knows his stuff!
Bill is a great guy! Although he's not always clear about his expectations for assignments, he is always there to answer questions & help you. He is a fair marker, who provides helpful feedback (my writing has def improved). Participation is a must, as he is blind and rely's on this to get to know his students personally. Would recommend for sure
I would consider Thompson one of the more difficult graders. However, I really enjoyed his class because he's such a nice, funny guy. He really goes out of his way to help you if you ask for it. I found my writing improved from this class but you definitely have to work for your grades. I would take another class with him!
I did not like english at all in high school, but he made this course quite bearable. His marking was pretty fair and gave really good feedback. Everything is done electronically, which depending on the person could be good or bad. The only complaint I have is sometimes his topics for assignments were almost too broad.
Nice guy, makes lectures funny and interesting, but a very nit-picky marker and doesn't tell you about the final until the last day of class. Takes a while to reply to emails. If you ask for help though, he is helpful and if you take his suggestions to heart, you will do well. Assigns LOTS of reading and essays.
Overall good prof. There is a 5% participation grade, there are more assignments than usual for an ENGL 102 class, but this can also be good because the final paper is worth less. Fairly tough grader be prepared to revise your work a lot. He's a funny prof as well and super helpful on assignments if you ask questions.
Mr. Thompson is by far the nicest teacher I've had! He will engage you in his class and will ask you questions to better understand the content. If you regularly participate he will grow quite fond of you and call you on you a little bit more. I should know, I'm one of those. The course is simple if you show up to class and do the assignments.
Take advantage of his feedback! It is the most thorough & helpful of any prof I've had. Taking it to heart makes a BIG difference on future essays (for him or other profs)! If you submit late, he won't take marks off but won't give feedback either. LOTS of reading and class time is lots of discussion, but he's an interesting lecturer too.
Where do I start about how amazing Dr. Thompson is? His lectures are hilarious and incredibly informative. He really makes students think critically about the material and expects a good level of participation. He provides additional material to students that is both helpful and interesting, and is caring yet expects greatness.
As a first year I find him a great prof. He is understanding and will extend due dates often if he feels the class needs it. He is easy to talk to and provides great feedback. Only issue I can see is how he give out the 5% participation mark. You have to get to know him to earn it, and I can see that being an issue if you are the quiet type.
GREAT FEEDBACK! First English teacher that I've ever had who tells you improvements line by line, along with a summary of each paragraph and the entire piece. He will help if you need it. Interesting lectures, funny guy and really helpful. Take him for sure!
One of my most favorites profs. He cares a lot about his students and he makes class fun. For somebody who struggles with writing, I still enjoyed his class. The most important are that he is always willing to help you do better, he replies to the emails and will work with you to office hours. 100% take him if you can.
Lots of fun to be in his class, he cracks quite a few jokes if you're paying attention and he really wants his students to succeed as he provides lots of opportunity to fix your mark and he offers lots of feedback on his essays
One of my favorite profs! He gives great feedback on assignments. It was awesome to have a prof who understands that uni is stressful, so he has a week extension to hand in assignments but you will not receive feedback (doesn't affect your grades). Very funny and he definitely helped me improve my writing. His assignments are also interesting.
Professor Thompson is an outstanding professor. The class had a LOT of reading to do, but discussion in class and Thompson's eagerness to discuss the material with you made it worth the time. He has a great sense of humour and makes dull material fun to talk about. Plus, the guy wears Star Trek and Lord of the Rings shirts to class. Enough said.
William was amazing. I went in prepared to hate English after 12 years of school but he made it super interesting. We had no exams, only papers and each major paper (3) was split up into 3 parts to help you really grasp the content and his expectations. I would highly recommend him, participation matters and just showing up isn't enough to get it.
Great guy, his lectures are very engaging, he provides good feedback on assignments as long as you hand them in on time. All of our papers were divided into parts he accepted assignments up to a week late, so he was understanding of students who were struggling. The only thing I didn't like was that you really have to work for participation marks.
Thompson is the best English professor I have encountered so far. His grading criteria is very clear, and there are very few assignments throughout the term (no midterm or final exam). He provides great feedback on your work - as long as you hand it in on time. Class participation is worth 10%, so do go to class!
Mr. Thompson has to be one of my favorite proffs i've had at a university level. work on the comments he leaves on the writing assignments and it will be an easy A
Tough grader, but he is kind and helpful when asked for help, or to redo a paper with problems. Super nice guy; good sense of humour; thoughtful and caring. These are valuable qualities in a prof who is helping people learn, not just knocking people down like many other professors do, just for kicks.
He was a fantastic Prof who truly cares about you and your concerns. He's blind yet makes the class more personal than any other teacher I've had. He took the effort to know your name and does a lot of one on one work to make sure you're doing your best. He gives lots of papers, but mainly just to give you feedback and the chance to improve.
Took Childrens lit with him, very heavy reading as it was 9 novels but he is VERY understanding and is ready to help if you talk to him. Participation matters.
William is amazing!!! He is funny and kind, gives amazing feedback on your papers. He genuinely wants you to learn and make you a better writer. He is a fair marker and gives you lots of time in class to work on your papers and gives lots of extensions to alleviate stress! I would highly recommend him for this class.
Took Engl 102 with him before. He gives really good feedback but he's the hardest marker ive ever seen. He's really hard to impress. Had to read 9 novels this term. Participation really matters, you wont receive full marks for attending his lectures only. He expects you to speak every class. Probably the last english class ill take with him.
Amazing prof! He tells you what he expects and is a tough grader but you can tell he just wants everyone to succeed. Gives lots of one on one attention to your concerns and will always help! We only did essays in his class but it has done a lot for me. He gives extensions too and genuinely cares about you enjoying the class, just work really hard!
The best English prof I've ever had! He gave me such amazing feedback and I genuinely became a better writer because of him. If you show up to class and try to talk, you will get a good mark in participation (I hate talking in class and I did awesome in participation). Overall, I would highly recommend to anyone!
Amazing prof. Funny as hell if you tune into his lectures. I find it inspiring for him to be teaching an English class while being completely blind -that also means that he doesn't do midterms or finals. The course was easy to follow and we did Harry Potter for our book report to which he was enthusiastic about. Gives good feedback too.
Prof. Thompson was one of the absolute best profs I had. The amount of reading we had to do (one novel a week) was excessive, but the reading was light enough and the discussions rich enough that even if you had not finished the book entirely you did not miss any key information. Final exam was in take-home essay format.
TAKE THIS PROF! The most understanding prof I have ever had. He understands the student life so he is willing to adjust things in the schedule. He's funny and very kind to his students. He really takes the time to get to know you if you regularly attend class. Tons of reading in this course but I know he's firm on that! Attending regularly helps!
He is a great prof and I'll definitely try to have him again. He marks a bit hard but gives great feedback. Plus he changes the due dates if he feels there hasn't been enough time for us, which is greatly appreciated. No midterms or final.
Dr. Thompson is extremely caring and funny. He does not have one of those monotone voices that make it easy to fall asleep like alot of other profs which makes it so that paying attention to him is easy. He gives really great feedback, and if you decide to take his class there is a slight surprise for you when you first enter his class.
Coming from someone that is more math/science oriented I'm always a bit anxious about English classes. But, this class was excellent. He has a very unique teaching style that really pushed me to want to grow as a writer and academic. I've been able to apply the things I learned in this class to everything I write. 10/10 would recommend.
Bill was such a fun professor. He also cracked jokes and made sure everyone was well respected. Majority of the semester we did a novel study... Harry Potter!! There was a lot of essays, and I got the exact same mark on every assignment no matter if I worked hard or not. Gives great feedback on every essay if you hand on time. Extends deadlines too
He was absolutely AMAZING! I would take him in a heartbeat again. Extremely kind, genuine prof. He really cares for his students. Take him if you can :)
I really enjoyed this class. I learned a lot and also had few laughs which was cool. I think I even improved my communication skills which was a huge bonus! Yes, lots of reading for sure though, but if you like to read (it was a 300-level course afterall), youll be fine.
I quite honestly don't have enough good things to say about him; He's hilarious, on top of being incredibly understanding and willing to super out of his way to help you. He's very thorough in his grading but it is SO helpful and will make you a much better writer! One of my favourite profs by far. Participation is HUGE.
In spite of being online this year, Bill put in a lot of work to set students up to succeed. He provides lectures both as written posts and as videos with commentary, and gives lots of great reading material and writing resources. It's worth noting he doesn't dock marks for late work, but he will rescind feedback. Overall a great professor.
William was a good professor. He defied the odds as he is blind, and that's amazing! The downsides to him - Takes a while to get back to your emails (more time than it should take to) -Tough grader, I think he expects too much from his students- especially from online class. 1 mistake, automatic 80% --is how it felt. Otherwise he is great!
For ENGL 219, I had to read 7 novels however Dr. William was kind and helpful. There are two assignments that allow you to be creative and I genuinely recommend this class. There is quite a lot to read but it was not necessary that bad. Dr. William wants to help and will give you plenty of time to work on your essays if needed. Better than others
Thompson is a really good English prof. He actually lets you write papers that let you explore a creative style of writing. this helped because there wasn't a set assignment. It was more of write what you want which felt good to not put so much stress on me. he provides lots of notes for each reading which was very helpful
He is such a nice man and very helpful. He gives great feedback and if you have an issue and won't be able to hand in your assignment on time then just talk to him about it and he will arrange a different date for you. Great prof
Graded extremely hard on assignments. Guidelines for assignments are vague and provides unhelpful feedback. The grade I received in this class is so far the lowest Ive received in any university course!
Bill is knowledgeable, but he expects students to be at his level. He does not explain new writing structures enough, and you need to ask for a lot of extra help or use Google. He doesn't grade with a rubric, but his spoken feedback is very helpful. Lots of time to do assignments, and some are grade boosters, plus he doesn't dock for late work.
I felt super hopeful about this class and received one of the worst grades I have ever gotten. I took this class during covid and was often sick, I communicated this but was still penalized despite attempting to remedy the situation. Be wary if you are anxious of talking aloud in class as well because you will be marked absent if you don't.
Bill is a great prof and cared for his students and wanted them to do their best. He understood how stressful school was and would give the whole class extra days to hand in assignments. I had difficulty accommodating a project for him (he is blind), but he discussed it with me before grading it, which I appreciated. Very kind and caring!
Great teacher always assisted me when I needed it. wanted the best for me and worked to make sure I could succeed. very compassionate. In my perspective, he was a great marker and a really understanding person. Makes me want to major in English. 10/10
William is a great professor. I would recommend taking him if possible. He grades really easy and his feedback really helps. He is a really caring professor and his writing topics are actually interesting and applicable to society.
Great prof, had him for both ENGL102 and ENGL103. Gives in-depth breakdowns of his grades for papers, would definitely recommend him.
I'm not sure if I got a dupe Professor or not. My experience with him does not match the wonderful reviews seen here. I found he was extremely rude, wildly unorganized, and took forever to get marks back. I'm going into the final with only 20% of my grade marked. He may be better in person, as this class was async - but don't believe the hype.
William is accommodating and always accessible via email. He gave detailed feedback on each of my works, making understanding his expectations easier. I will definitely choose him again.
Gave lots of useful information. Stressed the importance of theme and topic statements, organization, and the use of appropriate wording or diction in the essays written for this course. Did not always get marks back when promised. This course examined mostly modern-day material. The final exam was an online take-home exam - which was awesome.
I loved Bill's class. He was incredibly engaging and encouraged lots of in class discussion. He gave the most detailed feedback I've ever received (a 15 minute video going through my essay) which was super helpful! He does assign a lot of books so get ready for lots of reading.
Sweetest man there ever was. I felt so bad, no one but me and one other girl would participate in his class, and he was so clearly passionate about the material. An Icon. I will be taking more of his classes and I don't even like English. Slay.
During the time I was taking his class, I thought he just didn't like me. Turns out, it was just me. He is an amazing teacher and gave really good feedback. BUT LISTEN TO ME! WATCH HIS LECTURE VIDEOS AND READ HIS MODULE POSTS. everything he said not to do, I did. Because I didn't watch or read the lectures, they are very informative.
He's very nice and replies to emails fast, but he does assign a lot of work! So get ready to write an essay or an extended paragraph along with a discussion post every single week.
Get ready to read a ton if your English abilities are not strong; do not take this course. He is a picky marker. You must be able to read between the lines. The amount of content via module posting and videos gives little time to prioritize other courses. Without a five-course schedule, this course might have been manageable
He is very knowledgeable and provides modules and videos for each topic. However, this course is very reading-heavy and can sometimes get overwhelming. While grammar is crucial in this class, the themes in the material are equally important. If you find it difficult to understand these concepts, you may find the course challenging.
Very kind and passionate man. This class was about some of his favorite works, and you could tell. Very accommodating for us, and the class genuinely cared about him as well, especially considering he's blind. Would highly, highly recommend.
Tons of reading per week, and he is a strict marker for an introductory class. He gives us lots of work to do and participation matters. Be ready to read many short stories, poems and 3 novels and watch a movie. It's not an easy A.
4, 400 word assignments, 10 discussion posts weekly, 2 1300 word essays, 1 midterm, 1 final paper, ALL ESSAYS, This class is not even close to easy and it doesnt help when the guy is a hard marker
This class was very interesting, and I really loved the readings we did. However, there are a lot of them and there's a fair amount of assignments, so make sure you have your time management down. I took this class in my third year with 4 other classes which I really don't recommend. It will fit in better with a lighter courseload.
dont do it.
One of the best english profs I've ever had! If you're a hands off student, you can get by with a b+/a- in his class. If you're willing to participate and engage with him, it's an easy A/A+. Super chill, understanding and funny prof. Would 1000% take again!!
