He will either like you or hate you. Don't tell him if you need an "A", or he will make your life miserable.
Very srraightforward and funny at the same time. He keeps the class interesting, but checks up on homework assignments. I would take his classes again if he taught upper-division courses.
he isnt an awful teacher, but he does not know hot to grade. he will make u read a book and give you a quiz on the book, and if you do not get at least 70% on the quiz he automatically gives you no credit, and the quiz questions are on the smallest detai
Funny so the class goes by fast, but doesn't remember that it's eng 101 and expects you to write like a pro. And the quizes aren't that hard, just read and take note.
very hard grader. He thinks that we are all professional writers. I got a c. my only c ever in college. Take John hall for english.
This professor is a very tough graded. He really does not understand the fact that we are not professionals at writing. He attempts to be funny to make class fun, but it is actully pretty stupid.
Had a great time in his class. He expects people to be able to write at college level. He makes the class fun. Yes, he grades hard, but he offers extra credit. I love him, sure I got an A, but even my friend who got a D thought he was a good teacher.
Vaughn is fun and creative. He's passionate about English and helps you look at things differently. He expects alot and gives alot but I can say without a doubt that going to his class was the highpoint of my semister.
All u need to know is that I consider myself a good writer and I got undeserving C's on all of my papers and one D. And this man gave me a D in the class which was wrong
One of my favorite teachers ever, loves the subject, challenging, fun, seems to bring out the whining in mediocre and poor writers
Again, not the easiest teacher, why would you want an easy English teacher? So awesome, that I'm taking him again during the winter. I loove you Vaughn!
I didnt like the way he graded. I thought his class was very boring and very informative.
I thought the writing subjects and reading material were different and interesting. He lets you know what a A, B, C, and D paper looks like from day one so you don't have to figure it out yourself. Be careful on his quizzes he asks questions on little things so take notes when you read.
Mr Vaughn is my favorite teacher ever. His class is so fun, he is hilarious, it doesn't even feel like school but you learn a lot. I go to UC Irvine now and I still haven't had a better teacher.
i had vaughn and his class was the only class i didn't ditch. he makes the class really interesting and doesn't make you write boring papers or read lame books. thanks mr.vaughn
never tells you what is wrong with your papers.
Class was kind of hard and easy in certain parts. He is a fun teacher, got to watch some movies. the movies were used as examples of what to write for papers. pretty cool. very visual. He is an okay teacher.
the books were boring but you didnt have to write that much and he grades fairly easy. he doesnt really tell you in detail what you do wrong though. you do have to somewhat study for the quizes and he when you write paper, make sure its in the format he wants. he is big on that
I really enjoy his class. Some of the essays are a little difficult but it makes you try more than a regular class. He is really funny and makes his class comfortable.
very unclear about everything in his class, and doesn't explain himself very well.
One of the best professors I ever had. The only teacher that taught me how to improve my writing skills and made it easy to understand the many wonders of Shakespeare. I loved his class. There needs to be more teachers like him at the college
unclear and not to helpful
Very unclear in the assignments he assigned. Talked about strange things that half the time weren't related to anything that we were doing in class
GREAT teacher, very funny guy. Is genuine and really loves the written word. I had a great time in his class, with the exception of reading Frankenstien (stupid Mary Shelly) but... he knows his stuff and will HELP if you ASK FOR IT. Genuinely great teacher. Very interesting guy.
he makes english fun. HE is a bit eccenteric but in a good way. you do have to work in his class but the assignments are easy.
WAS A GREAT DICTATOR AND TEACHER. HAS A GREAT POINT OF VIEW OF THE WORLD AS HE GLADLY SHARED IT WITH THE CLASS. THE COURSE WAS A CHALLENGE BUT IF YOU ARE THE DEDICATED TYPE, HE IS THE GUY FOR YOU.
He is a very weird guy, he has a new topic he talks about every day in class about what has happened to him that relates to the topic in class. Essays are numerous but are not that difficult. I am not a writer and I still did well in the class. Yes, his hair is very weird.
BE AWARE, if he does not agree with what you say in your papers he WILL give you an F. He is very biased. You think he should grade based on your writing level but he doesnt. Not only that, but he is NOT a very nice person. He allows personality conflicts get in the way of the integerity of education.
At first, I was confused and intimidated; but after acquiring a tutor from his previous class; I was informed to FOLLOW HIS EVERY INSTRUCTIONS and to appeal to the "DARK SIZE" of the subject matter. It worked, I received a B in the class. You will learned if that is your intention. I feel that after several decades of "no school" I did very well.
I managed to get out of this class with a C, very hard and int very clear. He also has you read stupid books. Papers are not easy and he does not help you very much. I am not sure if there is a good English Teacher at this school, they all seem to have chips on their shoulders like they are to good to be at this school.
He is a very good speaker and a pleasure to listen to, and really makes interesting points about the books discussed. He makes you really respect and appareciate the literature. Just come with an open mind about reading and writing, and the class is very enjoyable
loved being in his class because he was so hilarious. also enjoyed his weekly riddles very much. the mahority of the kids I talked to said he was a hard grader, I too agree. But if you learn his style of writing and what he likes to see in papers, you'll be fine.

Loud, laid-back, intuitive. Comes off as funny and very smart, and possibly self-absorbed. Values content over structure, so lessons have little structure and can be hard to follow.

just because he's different, doesn't mean he's a bad teacher. he is clear and precise. you all should be so lucky to have taken him.

this guy is awesome, recommended for sure

Grades papers based off personal opinions. In english 101 you learn composition...later english classes are based on full content...maybe he doesnt understand that.
**** him
grading is some what unclear as to what he is looking for i.e. says one thing then grades a different way. quirky and a bit weird but what english professor isn't.
NO REQUIRED TEXT BOOKS!!! Just two novels :)
Interesting, engaging, likeable. Knows his stuff. This is a freshman comp class so be prepared to WRITE and to think for yourself. No boring, expensive textbooks, uses novels. Great teacher, will definitely take other classes taught by him.
Excellent! The only English prof I've had who seemed to understand that writing doesn't have to be cookie-cutter-shaped to be good. If I have one more teacher tell me that my writing needs more description that appeals to the senses, I'll leave an open jar of mayonaise in their air conditioning vents.
He's cool as a person but the assignments.... why does every one need to be super mega ultra descriptive!!

He is so full of himself. I did not learn anything in his class and I had to retake it. He grades based on his personal opinion and is very bias. If you have to take english 102 take Toth, he has more work but is fair and you will learn so much more.
Dude, this guy is nuts. Funny, has interesting views on things, challenges you to think differently. Everything is fine accept for his grading! It is so bogus!, he must have started it fall 2004. BE WARNED! if you miss more than 3 questions on tests and quizzes you fail! Not kidding. So many people were doing horribly. Definitely recommend a different instructor.
His class was actually quite fun. As long as you pay attention, you won't do badly. We watched a bunch of movies and there were no required text books!! just two novels that were fun reading.....he's a good instructor and your class is interactive
He's a great teacher. He's funny, interesting, and gets you into the class.I liked all the essay topics and how there was no text book. He's areally nice guy and I would deffinantly take him again.
Yeah he makes you work for your grade but he teaches you how to think
This instructor is a very interesting person and has a unique and refreshing outlook and approach to teaching. However, I think he should be more clear as to his expectations on assignments and give better examples. The class was pretty easy if you attend every session and like anything in life put a little effort in it, and you will do well.
Very strict on essay grades.
Is a pretty hard teacher, but come on people, this is college!! If you think you can skate by like you did in high school, do not take him. He picked interesting books to read and required no textbook, so that was good. He likes to mix things up by adding puzzles, humor to the class. You will ot do well if you procrastinate with last minute essays!
He is slightly burnt out. You can expect a typical workload with this class. Follow his instructions to the letter-no deviations! He seems to be more hospitable to the female students compared to the guys, but I could be wrong.
The in class stuff is easy as well as the tests on books but when it comes essays forget about it. Unless you have had major experience with writing expect a C. Nobody recieves an A because his view of an A is "A perfect paper, It would have to be as good as a paper that I would write"-Vaughn. It's an easy pass but if you want an A forget it.
He is an amazing person and a great teacher
Mr. Vaughn is a very good instructor. He makes every effort to guide his students to their best possible performance. All he asks is that you complete the assignment. A good strategy is to complete it in time for the in-class review and follow his advice...
mr. vaughn is hard; no extra credit, quizes are hard, essay are easy, expect a 'C' in his class. he sees an 'A' as a perfect paper. the quizes are 30% of your grade, essays 50%, 10% for final, and 10% for participation. Take him if you dare.
I liked the guy. He's funny. It's sarcastic, though, so a lot of people don't get it. Just read your book. Write a paper when he tells you to. It was easy to me.
i like mr. vaughn he talks alot, but his class is interesting, DO YOUR READING ASSIGNMENTS ON TIME and the essays of course and youll do fine
Read the books (interesting reads) Do the essays ( You won't get an A unless you are a career writer, but I got Bs on mine) and when he tells you bring notes.. bring notes.. and you will do well... He's a nice guy.. and while he appreciates imagination don't try to bs your way through the quiz if you didn't do the reading.. he doesn't appreciate it.
Mr. Vaughn is HOT!!!
Great teacher, class isn't typical list of tasks and lectures, always something new and fresh. The reading is interesting.
He's a great teacher. Sarcastic and witty and it's always something new. Likes to have full on conversations with the class and all the assignments are easy. Nothing to it. Loved his hippish look trust me look at him and tell me he wasn't a hippie. Loved that. Also anyone who takes him notice how he seems to glide into the room. Great techer-loved
This instructor is funny, but his grading sucks. He is very strict on your essays; it has to be perfect to receive an A. Does not tell you what you’re doing wrong, which makes it difficult to fix’s your writing errors. He also makes you read a lot, two very boring books.
Great class, cool teacher. I never liked English classes until this one. His grading system is very fair. It is about impossible to get an A on an essay, but very easy to get a B on one. He is really big on completing work, so don't turn in anything that doesn't meet minimum requirements. Any essay that meets them is at least a C.

Mr. Vaughn has to be the weirdest teacher i have EVER had but, class was always interesting. Only 3 essays. i think it was a fun class... & i would take him again if he tought 102.
Please keep in mind that I thought I was in class to learn english, but instead I felt I was in theater arts class, he is very confusing and an unfair grader, you never know what you did wrong on your paper because he fails to tell you. Beware do not take this class with him, seems to be bias.
He is an artistic teacher whose teaching method is very special and interesting. Some students get confuse in his class;however,if you pay attenstion, you will learn a lot from his topics.
Prof. Vaughn teaches the applications of English, not the basic elements of it. He expects that his students already know how to write and are able to express themselves creatively. His lectures are interesting and helpful in other classes.
Do not take this teacher. He fails to help.
Interesting teacher but unless you have prior knowledge on writing a paper... he is no help.
He is cool
He tell you just what to do
Professor Vaugn is way cool! His morning quotes/lectures are both humorous as well as inspiring. There are really only 4 essays and a few short in class assignments, He really goes out of his way to help, all you have to do is ask! wish he was teaching ENGL102, and creative writing! rock on Mr. V!!!
Seems to a good teacher however when it comes to grading it's unfair. Just got my paper back and he refused to read it due to a single failure to have it in ''proper" MLA format. I normally wouldn't complain but he just held up an A paper that didn't have the last name in the corner which also fails MLA. So what is the problem here?
Mr. Vaughn is an acquired taste. If you can handle opinionated comments, then take him. He's a fairly hard grader, in my opinion. He makes class interesting when he's not making unnecessary comments about his student's lives. You need the books to pass the quizzes. If you're okay with everything that I've mentioned, go ahead and take him.
He is really funny and sarcastic. He has a way of making you think deeper into things.
mr.vaughn is a very interesting teacher at times its like okay this is supposed to be english and you dont know why he teaches about art and stuff but for the record ill never look at a painting without analyzing the story behind it. theres 3 major essays and some essays in class work as well.favoritism is a big deal in this class.
Vaughn is very theatrical focusing a lot on film as a medium.Although this makes class more interesting rather than the dry English classes we are used to, we should probably focus more on books and writing rather than films. An A is not an easy task for the essays if that is what you want - to get it you must truly think outside the box.
Mr. Vaughn is an interesting guy. He makes an effort to make things entertaining. He also focuses on more than just standard essay writing (in order to make the course interesting to a wider audience). He likes participation... this isn't favoritism, it is simply that he knows the students that participate. An A is hard to get but a B is easy.
Oh dear Mr. Vaughn..the guy is very tricky. In the begining he makes you believe your a good writer and then fails you. His grading system is not fair at all, its basically A or F. He is nice and very funny but in the end the jokes on you when he gives you a FAIL! :(
I would NOT recommend this teacher at all,, worst teacher I have ever had.. He is horrible, no help on of the 3 essays required he just stamps a grade on ur paper and hands it back to you with no comments, and he wont tell u why he gave u that grade.. his class is more like a film class not english.. makes you read a book in 5 days with 2 quizzes.
Great teacher! Funny! Family guy with great personality! I would take his class again and have recommended others to take his class!
Your grade is based off of how many pages you write in your essay and not the content. This class was a struggle for me.
he assigns the most ridicoulus writting assingments in the WORLD! BORING! I hate him he has thing thing of banging his fingers on his desk when he runs out of things to talk about. He trys to be funny but he really isnt he stamps ur grade on ur papers with no comments or suggestions as to why thats ur grade. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!
Knows what he is doing. You have to READ, big surprise in an English class. Great classroom.
Professor Vaughn was the first teacher I had at AVC and he was a good teacher. It's a pretty standard class and there's nothing outrageously awesome about it or terrible about it. My only gripe is that he doesn't comment on your essays to let you know how you could do better. But he's a funny guy and I enjoyed his class
This is a very good teacher. Makes you think out of the box, and about the other side of things. Be prepared to think and analyze in this class.
has an original approach to english compositon...makes class very entertaining.
He cares about his students
I hate this teacher, he makes you feel stupid. my mom was dying and he straight up told me that he didnt care about my personal life and told me that i had to be in his class and if i were to miss on he would drop me. Dont take him he is messe3d up!
Entertaining lectures that applied to students who think of writing as just a class to get through. He challenges students to be able to fully comprehend and talk about things you're learning. He is tough so if you need a more nurturing teacher for 099 take Mrs. J.B. Fisher.
GOOD TEACHER HARD GRADER DON'T SLACK OFF ON PAPERS!!! ITS DIFFICULT TO PASS WITH AN A OR EVEN B SOMETIMES
He's very intelligent and funny. He expects you to come into the class with college level writing skills and if you don't have it, you won't get any higher than a C on your papers. Favoritism is also HUGE in his class, if he likes you better he will grade more lenient. A's are not impossible to get, I got one on a paper, yet they are hard to get.
I normally hate English classes but Vaughn's was so different, it was a very refreshing course! He expects you to already know how to write college level papers so he doesnt waste time lecturing on the basics. Only 3 essays but they are a BIG part of your grade so dont slack on them! Hes very helpful and witty. Lectures were entertaining and fun!
He's not that hard of a grader and he lets you resubmit papers for a chance at a better grade. Its a college level course, you should know how to write and he expects that. NO textbook! Quizzes are easy if you pay attention. Recommended if you dont like writing a bunch of essays. Big research paper though! Its not THAT hard to get an A or B
Mr Vaughn is extremely helpful and grades you fairly. This being a college level course he expects you to be at that level and rightfully so. The research paper is a biggie and it was a lot of work but overall his class is great. Plus Mr. Vaughn is has a really great personality and is very interesting to listen to.
He is a very intelligent teacher but seems to determine grades on whom he favors not the performance or quality of your work. Watch out if he doesnt like you personally your grade will reflect so!!!
DO THE WORK ITS VERY DIFFICULT TO GET AN A EVEN IF YOU DO THE WORK
Vaughn was a fun class, he spelled out all the assignments and the formats are in clear language and easy to do; he allows resubmitting of papers if you didn't understand or was way off with your papers. Pay attention to lectures and the reading/movie assignments for the quizzes and participate. Laid back, understanding, and a goofy sense of humor.
He is very interesting when he does his lectures. very smart. basic english class, expects papers to be good, as if ur a college grad and not a college student.
I did not think this was a hard class at all. We only had to read 2 books and only had 3 essays. You don't need to know much about writing composition for this class. MLA style at most really, and you're good as long as you did well in high school english classes. I got an A easily.
He is very interesting in lectures. expects papers to be as if you were in a UC majoring in English. Id say take him, its college so dont try and turn in highschool type papers
the class was not hard at all. i suck at english, but he gave the class step by step guidelines for the papers so it made writing em a piece of cake. only read two books some easy quizzes and class participation! Take him if you want to pass
This teacher was very easy. I loved his sarcasm, I screwed up, I failed because I was lazy wit my essays, but hes easy to pass. The only thing was his quizzes, you either pass them, or you dont, theres no B's or C's its A or F
All you have to do is pay attention in lecture. H teaches you how to actually read and enjoy literature. Your grade is based mainly on the 3 essays. Just make sure if you use sources, to have them in your papers.
Great teacher im not good at english at all but got a b in the class papers are based on easy subjects.
One of the best at AVC. He is funny and his class is extremely interesting! Take him, easy A!
Great professor. Very clear about what the expects from his students. Funny. Sarcastic. Uses alot of big words. VERY self explanatory guides for the papers he assignes. If you don't like to read I would recommend taking another teacher. Overall a very passionate english teacher!
Pretty funny and sarcastic. Very clear about what he expects from students and their papers. Doesn't force participation, but would prefer that you do. Attending class all the time is key to his final. A lot of the exercises in class really prepare you for his essays.
He is really funny.very passionate about what he does. Sheds a new light on Film and pictorial analysis. Essays are pretty simple. just do what he asks and you'll pass. Got a B due to my procrastination. no textbook required.
I loved this class so much it wasn't easy though,a lot of reading and test were kinda unfair but overall i am really happy I took him
Extremely interesting and thought-provoking topics. Very enjoyable class, though it was difficult. He gives great guides for writing essays, though they're not easy. He doesn't write comments on returned essays, but if you ask him what needed changed he gives a great explanation. I would recommend him, you learn a lot.
Mr. Vaughn is fair and, despite what's been said, gives plenty of feedback; to receive this feedback one must finish the paper before the date it's due. Passing is easy: follow the guidelines of his assignment. To excel requires hard work. If you are not interested in working hard do not take his class (or college for that matter).
TAKE HIM HES HOTT & EASY GRADER.. I LOVED HIM!!!
GREAT TEACHER HE HELPS OUT A LOT
EASY A!!!!!
I seriously enjoyed this class... and I am what you would call a stoner:) AND I LOVED HIS CLASS! Got an A! He's not that hard as long as you attend class and pay attention, take notes even though its not required... believe me it will help with quizes. i was stoned for every class, oh and he's hot. Extra credit available, and he takes late papers.
Never ever again. He ruined my 4.0 after I busted my butt in the class. Tries to be funny but is really offensive.
i was not impressed at all his grading is weird he either loves you or doesn't if you follow all his guidlines youll get a C but if he likes you then an A or a B
Mr Vaughn is a tough grader. He helps you in class. Keep his handouts and revisit them. You should know how to write b4 taking his class. Otherwise you just follow his guidelines he will pass you. And he tells you that up front. Weird guy but in a cool way. Essentric yes. I was scared but ended up liking his class. I got a B.
Took him during intercession. He didn't make you buy a textbook, only two novels. Graded more based on whether he liked the paper rather than if you actually wrote it in the proper format with correct grammar. I ended up with a B because of that. But his lectures are interesting. I definitely didn't mind going to class.
Its not the easiest thing to get an a but its easy to get a be. he's a fun and interesting guy, plus there is no text book and write only 4 papers.
Great teacher. Funny. Makes you want to attend class, even if you dont like english. Gives you a chance to turn in any essay you didn't do on the last day of class. Very clear on what he wants from the work he assigns. I turned in two essays late on the last day of school and still got a "B". He also keeps the class entertained with fun excercises.
Mr. vaughn has the most interesting sense of humor i have ever encountered with a professor. very entertaining guy,was able to keep my 100% focus on his lecturing even in a 8:00 AM class. covers a diversity of english topics with ease and incorporates them with current events. Great teacher
He's a pretty fun teacher. Isn't totally an easy class though. Just gotta write 4 papers, one of which is a summary of a book. And participation is about 1/5 of your grade. And he's also pretty funny as well. Also have to pay attention a lot during class. He could give out a quiz about what he discussed.
This is a true creative writting instructor. Probably one of the last teacher's who still have a strict but down to earth nature. Thank you for providing a person with such a gift.
I loved Mr. Vaughn's class! He pushes towards doing the essays on your own, but he will help you out if you have any clarifying questions. You only have to do three essays which is good. The last one is challenging since English isn't my strong subject but you'll be doing yourself justice by taking is class.
I hated going to this class. I never felt like we were in English class. He wants you to write a bunch of essay's on a lot of boring subjects he gives. Listen while he talks because he will give you a quiz at the end of the class. Hated this class. Very Boring!!!
VERY nice guy if u tk the time 2 just communicate w/him he knows his ish so DONT try 2 get over you’ll look stupid he will acknwldg u in clss hwevr does most of the tlkng extrmly hlpfl if u tk the initiative 2 ask the clss is a tad slow but I learned a lot & enjoyed his kwldge as well as him he shld allow stdnts 2 select book/movie for the essays
Vaughn is a nice guy. We read a book but besides that, we didn't use a a text book. He grades pretty hard. I never had a problem writing papers before this. He does let you turn in papers early to get feedback. That saved me! Otherwise i would have received a bad grade. You can turn in papers at the end of the year, but you get deducted a grade.
WARNING, if you're not clairvoyant; you had better be bold. He doesn't really tell you what he wants, and you can be completely off base and bomb. He gives a quiz after each section of A Curious Incident book that isn't listed on syllabus, so be ready, and don't read ahead. Stay after and ask him to clarify assignments.
Very Vague with writes assignments, which mean you could take it any direction you please, but its almost as if he is looking for one specific thing and if you dont come up with it on your own, then your grade goessss dooowwwn! Honestly if i was taking a comedy class id take Vaughn but English ill go with someone else.. funny guy but semi difficult
He was vague about the assignments, if he doesn't like you he will not help you, he is not a nice person and only likes to hear himself talk. Rude and disrespectful to students he doesn't like based on their opinion, acts like a spoiled drama queen and likes to throw tantrums. WHO DOES THAT!!????
I failed his 1st quiz & considered dropping the class. I chose to stay & then each paper started to improve. I do enjoy writing in clear/correct English so that helped. My final paper was hard(took 4 days)but I got an A! Then I got a B on the final. He's a good teacher & I learned alot from him! Don't take him if you want to be lazy though.
Took him for 101&102. He's a pretty cool guy; very funny. A bit confusing when explaining assignments but as long as you produce something original he'll appreciate it. Doesn't want generic structured work, so definitely think outside the box when writing your papers and make sure you do the reading for the few quizzes. Stay after class to chat!
Very cool teacher has a great sense of humor and i enjoyed his class very much BUT be prepared for a lot of in class quizes and about 3 papers. He has no problem helping you just have to be sure to ask for it.
He talks to much and is not specific on what he expects on the papers. I wish I would've checked him out here before taking his class. I would not recommend him at all!
He is nice and funny, but he is a hard grader. You really have to work to get a good grade in the class. As much as I worked, it was just too much for a ENGL 101 class. Take someone else if you can. If you can't, just be ready for a lot of work. Good class overall but grading is ugly.
His class is not worth it. There are many quizzes in class that you can't prepare for because it is on material that was learned that very day and his essay grading is not good. Unless you are a teacher's pet and love a rigorous class, don't take him.
great professor.
He's pretty vague, but he's an okay teacher to have over wintercession. Funny, but grades terribly and doesn't really ask for what he wants. You gotta be persistent to get feedback out of him because usually your papers will only have a grade.
He really isn't too bad. Just ask him what he wants, and have a voice in your papers. If you meet the minimum requirements, you're at least guaranteed a C. If you give your papers some style, you'll probably get an A.
I took this class during winter intercession. Mr. Vaughn is a hard grader, but if you work hard, then your grade will reflect it. Be prepared for surprise tests & quizzes. He will review your essay prior to the due date and the feedback is helpful. It is a tough class.
I took his class during winter intersession, and found him to be welcoming, friendly and sincerely excited about being there. His instruction style is intended for college students. In other words, he's not going to hold your hand and and tell you what to write. He gives you the assignment and then its up to you to do it.
i got a c. i would go into office hours to get help with my essays and he would look at it and say its okay. then i would get c on my essays. he sucks. he is boring and i didnt learn anything from him. The silver lining of his class was the reading material i loved the books he told us to read.
Multiple essays and quizzes. If you follow his guidelines on the essay format you will at least get a C. You have to think outside the box with essays wo going too far off topic. What he wants from essays and assignments aren't always clear even if you ask for clarification. Willing to give extra credit if you ask & you can turn essays in late.
He is a very confusing person, when he talks I feel like my brain is being melted. He says stuff like "tomorrow is yesterday of the day before of last month", Wasn't easy to focus in this class, but the assignments were doable, just very confusing.
Doesnt mark up your essays to help you understand why you got a certain grade and how you could have made it better just gives you a letter grade on your paper and has a checklist thats attached to it.
Good class! If you're not a fan of essay writing, this class isn't for you. There's a lot of reading and essays in this class! Mr. Vaughn is a hilarious guy and every class is different, rarely boring. The only thing is that he grades very specifically! Not necessarily hard, but you MUST do his exact standards, or else your grade will pay!
I loved taking English 101 with him! He made everything really easy to understand and he was really helpful when you asked him for help. I wish he was teaching English 102, because I would have taken him again!
The scatter brained aloof eccentric professor. Easy going and has interesting insights.
Mr. Vaughn is without a doubt one of my favorite teachers at AVC. He manages to make a 3 hour long class interesting. There is no text book and the only books you need, can all be gotten from the public library downtown. Final is so easy and you can prep for the entire thing a week before class!!! If you fail his class then you haven't tried.
Great Professor, literally taught me how to write. Best professor I have had so far. He's always there when you need help and he's hilarious so he keeps you awake in class. Definitely do all your readings and assignments and you will be just fine. Don't pass up the opportunity to take his class! Good luck!
This guy is hilarious! He's a bit eccentric at times and has Willy Wonka's fashion sense. Despite that, I enjoyed his class. You are required to read two books for the class. And he quizzes on curious incident and there was 4 papers you need to write. And of course in class exams and papers. Just like any typical English course.
While some professors will tech at you, Vaughn does not. He teaches in a way that makes you learn through thinking instead of constant lectureing. Don't take his kindness for weakness if you want an "easy" class go somewhere else cuz while he is leanant with due dates if you ask for extra credit you will have wished you had just done the originl
I loved Mr. Vaughn. He is an amazing teacher. I looked forward to class every week. I wish he taught Eng 102 so I could take him again. He cares about his students success.
He's a nice guy, but didn't learn very much. I was hoping to learn to write better essays, but when asked about my essays, his only responses were, "You could have gone farther/did more." Still unclear what that meant. Quizzes were given after a 'Willy Wonka' type of lecture. No book/notes to study. Hard to follow and understand what he expected.
When I took his class.... There was a lot of writing Lots of extra credits Lots of other creative activities (drawing puzzle solving etc) Read 2 books (as far as I remember) Wrote a book summary, (i picked the longest book so that took forever) He's very relaxed and funny, talks about his family a lot and helpful/friendly. There was an
Had fun every single day! He makes class interesting. Hes super sarcastic, but funny. Gives chances when your behind in class.
He barely explains the essays, and other writing we had to do in his class. And when you ask for more explanation he makes you feel dumb for it. Not to mention on the quizzes his questions ask for are from the most faint scenes from the book your going to read.
Mr. Von is a good professor. Their teaching style is different and fun.
I took his class during intercession he has a lot of quizzes and test you have to read he does not explain the assignments clearly. When you ask question he makes you feel dumb.
I would give him my papers to review and he would give me feedback, but after fixing what was wrong with it I would not get any higher grade for fixing it. I would have other people read it and nothing I would still not meet his standards. He gives you pop quizzes on grammar and a book where you have to read it but they are not easy.
This teacher could really be an amazing, if he would show more concern for his students. I went to him early on in the semester and told him that I struggled with his quizzes I told him that I was thinking on dropping he told me to continue coming to class needless to say I received a failing grade and I completed all 4 essays .
Professor Vaughn is an outstanding teacher of the English arts. His class propelled my writing skills above and beyond what they were before. He gives great feedback on your papers, and loves to help you. He is also HILARIOUS.
Indefinitely boring and is a very tough grader. Four days a week is a big hassle if you take the eight week course. Don't bother taking his class and make sure you register for another professor for English 101. Definitely not recommended registering in this class.
He's ok. Lots of reading. Participation and attendance sorta matter.
He is great. For all the works, follow the instructions closely and you will get your grade. If you need an extra help all you have to do is just ask.
The class was pretty easy, just complete the work you are assigned. My only issue was that he is ridiculously boring, I dreaded going to the class cause he kinda just drones on the whole time.
Professor Vaughn could be a great professor, but he lacks the patience for it. Be prepared for a lot of quizzes, that focus on the vaguest of details from the book, and if you have a question get ready for the most condescending response. As long as you stay under the radar (check and recheck the formatting, spelling, etc.) you'll pass.
He makes you work for your grades and lectures seem irrelavent but turn out to be so important .
Four essays for the whole semester with due dates spaced apart. You read two books, one required, one of your choice. Pretty boring class, kind of random classes sometimes, towards the end we did puzzles and watched films. The essays are a little tricky, but he goes over the prompt. Overall an okay class, not wowed, but wouldn't say it was terrible
I took him during summer but I really enjoyed his class, he really challenges you and forces you to think at he same time being very understandable and willing to work with you and remain fair to the class
Mr. Vaughn was such a fun professor, he really tried to make every class different while still teaching his material. The class was overall pretty easy; he does make you think. He also created little games for extra credit which was really fun. If you participate and do the work you will pass without a problem.
I have his class in winter intersession and well I'll say this, to those who are much of a slack off, it's best to get busy. He will constantly will bring a pop quiz out of the blue, and well as long as your ahead you'll be fine. His works sometimes get confusing and i'll go to tutoring just to get some help. He's also nice enough to do makeup work
Great teacher! Always available and open to students. If you stay on top of your work it really isnt too hard to pass.
Professor Vaughn is an alright professor. His classes are very boring and seems like he wings it each day. You'll have a quiz each class but he wont warn you. I also find his class very awkward, it's always that uncomfortable quietness where you hear every little sound. Overall, His class is an easy A, but he doesnt use canvas.
great teacher if you want a good English teacher take him hes great
His class was easy and he allows late papers to be turned in and has re-do days at the end of the semester, just in case you did bad on a quiz or on an exam. However, I did find the class a bit boring at times but he was hilarious most of the time.
I liked mr Vaughn he was cool and he tried to make class fun but he doesnt give interesting books to read and he grades pretty hard if your not an English as a first language speaker i wouldnt take him hes funny and is non judgmental and easy going but theres an essay due weekly and pop quizzes but clear grading. Its a 50/50 for me.
This class has no zoom meetings but you have assignments due during your class sessions. Very light work but there are weekly quizzes/exams. His grading is simple but very heavy towards your grade. Overall, an easy class as long as you do your work.
I took prof. vaughn's English 101 class in the fall of 2020. There was not zoom meeting everything was done through canvas. We had to read one book and it was relatively cheap to purchase, you could probably borrow it from the local library. If he would've had and English 102 course I would have taken him for that this semester as well.
I took Professor Vaughn for Spring 2021 and this is my second class with him. He is an amazing professor and very easy to understand as far as his grading practices. I would recommend him for any English class.
Took on campus but later turned to online because of COVID. Lectures are very vague with random topics with assignment each class. Does not use canvas so you will need to talk to him to find out your grade. During the shut down only used email and took forever to grade each assignment. 4 essay and assignment/quizzes each class. Passable class
Mr. Vaughn was a great professor. He gives out a decent amount of work, but none of it is too hard. Only one novel is used as a textbook, and it's not expensive. His essays can be kind of hard, but he only assigned three throughout the semester. Lectures can get boring, but overall, it's a very easy and interesting enough class.
Mr. Vaughn was such a delightful teacher. He sends an email every Friday and outlines what the coming week will entail. If you have any questions, dont be afraid to reach out. He will help in any way he can. He only has one to two, VERY easy assignments each week. So long as you pay attention in class and turn your work in on time, youll do great
One thing is he doesn't respond to emails, so you'll have to speak with him in person. Honestly he just talks the entire class, not necessarily on subject but he talks a lot. very easy going, but do the reading!!!!! two major papers are based on the reading... you direct quotes and examples from the book. lets you turn in some assignments late.
Dr. Vaughn was the best professor I ever had at AV. He made learning fun while also making you think outside the box. He knew my potential as a writer and once walked out of class while we were taking a test to check books out at the library for me . He's different. Be ready for anything, he's creative. I am a writer because of him.
This is an amazing teacher. Amongst teachers and what they can do for students, he is one of the best professor that will help you to be an excellent writer. He always puts himself out there for any student. For an instructor that goes out of way for students at Antelope Valley College.
Such a good teacher, he makes class lessons interesting and you gain a greater knowledge! go to class and attend you'll do good as long as you show up and put in the effort I would take him again!
SUPER NICE TEACHER, I loved taking this class, and would definitely recommend Mr. Vaughn, the assignments are pretty straightforward, and there are about 4 essays I believe during the entire semester, but other than that he's a super chill professor, super funny too
The grading is unclear, as the score fluctuates between each assignment, the class average was below the score of 2, when the assignments were 3 points. The required book for the course was barely used as well. His heart is in the right spot, but he has said nobody has gotten a 100% in his course, probably for a reason honestly.
Don't skip any assignments. Each assignment was 3 points while essays were 6; about one a month in a 16-week class 100 points total. But at the same time, you only get about two assignments a week for an online class which was nice. Fast grader which was nice for a change. A couple of assignments were interesting but nothing to write home about.
I found Professor Vaughn to be a difficult grader. His grading system is 3s and 6's, which will add up to 100 after the course is completed. The problem with not giving students a lot of projects is that it could lead to failure if given a poor mark on a past assignment.
I didn't like him very much as a person, but I have to admit he was a decent teacher. It wasn't a very hard course, but his assignments and lectures are pointless, and he grades harshly unless you are an outgoing student who always participates in class.
You will have several writting assignments per week. Some are broken up and others are a lump sum. READ EVERYTHING that is posted. Mr. Vaughn explains things in such a straightforward manner that alot of stuff falls into place. He has a mixture of interesting and boring short stories to read and write about. Ask for help if you need it.
great professor, has his own great way of going about things
Never I mean never take this professor. You can't miss a single assignment or you're done. Each assignment is either 3 or 6 for essays and he will not give a full score no matter what you do. So be prepared to get alot of 3/6 or 1/3 which are F's. Allows absolutely no late work No extra credit and assignments that are just weird and not English
Professor Vaughn was a great teacher - his assignments were manageable, and he made the lectures engaging. I found unstuckstudy super helpful for essay prep. Overall, a solid class worth taking.
He is good. Very chill and most times doesnt seem to care why you missed the class. i borrowed the book for this class and only talked about it like once or twice. theres a free pdf version online. he seems pretty positive and although you have an assignment everyday theyre pretty easy. i would take again.
This teacher isn't super bad. However, he like to grade really hard. Must turn work on time or you lose points. He is good at emailing back and giving a good amount of essay, but he isn't giving a huge amount. even though, this was all online don't be lazy if you have him.
Professor Vaughn's class is an easy A. Although it is a bit essay-heavy, everything you need for your essays is in the module, including what he expects regarding the grading criteria, and he always keeps grades up to date via Canvas, he is a bit hard to reach via email and doesn't really offer any feedback but overall, I did enjoy his class
Nothing I turned in was good enough for him. Spends the whole class talking about random nonsense which is only occasionally on the homework. Doesn't except late work for any reason and considers extra credit “cheating”.
Grades are pretty fair, but work is sometimes complex to understand. But it's always doable assignments, he gives critiques on work only when you request, but it helps to know what you've done wrong. Replies within a reasonable time to emails and is very understanding, do the work, communicate, and don't procrastinate; you will pass.
No extra credit AT ALL. He is a very ChatGPT against professor and he will do anything to make you not use it. His assignments are easy if you READ THE INSTRUCTIONS! don't forget to turn in his assignments, because it will drop your grade. He's actually really funny and it felt like we were having a conversation when he would lecture.
If you wanna learn English then take this class . If you just need credit you won't pass. Mr Vaughn is an amazing teacher who teaches with passion. He gives grading criteria and If you just do the work you can get an A very easily. The material was very interesting and He even gave you feedback. But if you just wanna pass THIS IS NOT THE CLASS.
could sometimes be unclear in the questions he asks the class in his prompts, he is a tough grader, he is nice and gives great feedback. I would say the class is easy, make sure to turn in assignments and pay attention in class. No late work accepted.
I took his online classes over a year ago for both 101 and 102. 102 was a lot more fun than 101 but the work wasn't bad. It was usually 2 assignments a week and his overview for the week was quite funny. I really liked his breakdown and teaching style and he made me have fun when I really dislike writing. Would recommend his online classes a lot.
Such an amazing professor, very funny, made class interesting, even though I had an 8am, I really enjoyed the class. Would recommend you to take him, pretty easy work as well.
I absolutely HATED the way he graded. Every assignment was worth 3 points except for papers, they were worth 6 points. I had an assignment that I got a zero for because it was "off topic". He doesn't provide a rubric and doesn't give credit for doing the work if you aren't answering the questions he specifically asked.
I took professor Vaughn over winter intercession and it was the easiest class ever. He does assign 2 assignments a day during intercession each worth 3 points but the instructions are very clear and if you follow them you will get full points. I recommend doing him for intercession because you only have to read 1 book and write 2 essays.
I had a really good experience with Professor Vaughn. He is funny and enthusiastic, he brings great energy to the students. The only thing I would point out is that his grading method can be a bit challenging. Other than that, he's a great teacher and communication is key if you ever need help.
Professor Vaughn is a great professor. He's funny, enthusiastic, and overall brings a great deal of energy to the classroom. His grading rubric is clear, but he is a tough grader. You need to be very clear and re-check your answer to ensure you're answering what he's asking and not going in circles, as this will negatively impact your grade.
Had him over the summer and overall was a class I looked forward too, Ne was a great professor with clear guidelines about grading although he is a bit of a tough grader so make sure you are doing the assignments correctly!
Cool dude, untraditional learning style, sometimes tough grading but overall dope
He was honestly a really fun teacher! I think the only thing I would say is to make sure you always show up to class because there are assignments that you will have to be in the class to complete, and also to take good notes in his class. I would recommend him. I usually hate English classes, but he made it enjoyable.
