definitely knows his history, but not arrogant about it. very humble and flexible. if you read the required information youre guaranteed an A on the exam. three exams - multiple choice, 1 essay on a story, and short answer identifing terms to pick from
He knows what he is talking about and he is easy to follow...go to class everyday and take good notes and you will definitly have an A in the class, and learn a lot!
He is very straightforward on his tests. No surprises or anything if you go to all his classes and read the assigned supplementary book.
He's a good teacher. He knows a lot about history and is really passionate about it. Go to each class and you'll pass. His tests consist of class notes and readings from a really interesting book (i forgot the name), but he tells you exactly what will be on the test.
great teacher. tests are directly from lectures and assigned readings. nothing tricky. willing to answer any questions. lectures can go a little bit slow some times, but would rather it that way than fast. would recomend to anyone, history major or not.
Great teacher, GO TO CLASS. Exams are based on notes in class and readings, no tricks like others have said. Really nice teacher and knows what he's talking about. Made US history interesting for me, would definately take him as a teacher again. Great experience.
By far the easiest teacher at VCU. His notes are very clear and this man is very very intelligent and knows alot about American History. Tests are very easy also. Definitely take this class... you won't regret it!
Professor Whitworth is one of the best, knowledeable teachers at VCU. He is very friendly and laid back. His notes and lectures are clear and interesting. Just go to class, take good notes, and do the assigned firsthand readings. Great teacher!

good teacher
I've learned a ton from his class. He's great about teaching the important aspects of history without bogging students down with too many details. He's got an endearing southern accent and seems to know his American history back and forth.
He is the BEST teacher. His notes are very clear and his lectures are interesting for student who what to learn about history and not have to fall a sleep during class. Just take good notes and read the assigned readings and you'll be fine. Highly Recommended.
Great guy. Very passionate and dedicated.
He is the most adorable old man ever and will do anything to help you(even gives you his home phone #) He is so dedicated to what he does and is one of the smartest men I have ever met. Class is very interesting and very easy. His tests are a breeze, just make sure to be detailed. Smiles for whitworth!
He is such an adorable older man. He knows his stuff! Going to class isnt mandatory but I would recommend it. I pulled a C in the class only because I screwed up on the 1st one but passed with flying colors on the last 2 tests. Buy the books, make an effort and youll do fine!
He is so adorable! He reminds me of a grandfather telling all of his little grandchildren about "back in my day." He's not really that old, but he just makes it that easy to understand! Read the assigned readings and go to class and you'll get a good grade.
Mr. Whitworth was a great teacher. Everything was straight forword just make sure to go to class and take good notes because his test are straight from the notes. And if you know a little something about history be sure to add in your input to it as well because I know that made a difference between me getting a F and a B in his class.
very very nice and great teacher. I love that he's so into what he teaches. Come to class and study and you should do well in this class.
Oldman Whitworth. Just come to class & take the notes. Lecture is slow because he drags on one subject forever & says about 20 pointless things before getting to the matter. Grade = 3 tests (multiple choice & essay). Don't buy the book for the class: just buy it BEFORE the test, read the story, & return the book to get your money back.
95% of the exams are from lecture so while he doesn't take attendance it would benefit you to come to class. The textbook is used to supplement the lecture. You cover quite a bit of chapters between each test but as long as you scan the chapter for what he talked about you'll make at least a B on the exams. I hardly read the book and made an A.
Most unstressful class! Doesn't take attendance, but exams are straight from lecture. Don't buy the text, but do get the book with the stories- theyre on the exam. Test are straight forward. He's great, totally reminds me of Mr. Rogers. Take him!
Mr. Whitworth loves history and tries to make it interesting. Attendance is not taken but if you don't have the notes from the lecture you will probably not pass the tests (3). Overall this is a low stress class. He speaks slowly so taking complete notes is no challenge. Great professor!
This was the easiest class I've ever taken. Attendance is not mandatory, but it's no coincidence that the people who come to class are doing great and the people who don't are failing. There are only 3 exams, all short essay. He lists 14 choices of either people, events or concepts and you pick 10 to write about. Exams are from lecture only.
He seemed a little boring, but as time went by his lectures weren't that bad, more like story-time everyday. He doesn't use powerpoints, just talks the whole time like he was there. His test are essay and if your aren't good at those (like myself) I wouldn't recommend the class. I felt my grade never reflected my knowledge of the material
He is so boring and his lectures are unorganized. This class was terrible and to blame for my loss of interest in history. Nice guy, terrible professor.
Even though attendance is not mandatory, go to class because tests are all from the lectures, I never opened my book. For tests he gives 14 terms and you have to write a short paragraph about 10. I got 100s on all three tests, and only studied a couple of hours on the day before the tests by making flashcards of key terms. Easy A!
Got an A in his class and all I had to do is ATTEND CLASS, take notes and study. DO NOT wait till the day before to study. I'm just an average 3.0 student, but this class is easy. DO NOT buy the textbook; you'll just be wasting your money since his lectures provide better information on what's going to be on the test.
VERY easy class! All you have to do is listen, take notes if you need, and get an easy A on the tests. Would only be boring if you didn't take notes, or have a short attention span.
Very easy class if you go to class. On the first test I got a 94, I got a 100 on the second, and I'm sure I'll get an A on the final. The people in class who are not doing well are the ones not attending class. The textbook was never used. He teaches kinda like he is telling a story to his grand kids. He is a very nice man and I recommend him!
He is the man! He is just like a grandfather telling his grandkids a story! The man really enjoys history and it shows when he is giving lecture. When he speaks, he talks in perfect outline form for your notes. Show up to class and you will do great. If you are failing his class, the blame is all on you for being lazy
I think his teaching style is great! He has 3 tests that are short answer/essay format. Those are the only 3 grades you get. He gives you 14 terms and you pick 10 to write about. You don't need a textbook for his class because it's solely based on his lectures so take good notes! I got 100s on all the exams.
Whitworth is the man, I wish all professors were like him. Teaches history as a story and as if he were there. Three test each with 14 terms, you choose 10 to write about. you DO NOT need the book, everything on the test are straight from lecture.
Really nice guy. Attendance isn't mandatory but you should come to class to get the notes, you don't need the book at all, he outlines everything clearly and you actually learn something. Only 3 exams I got an A on the first two and I'm sure I'll get an A on the last one too, highly recommend this class.
One of the easiest courses and best professors you will find. To be honest, the only way you will do bad is if you really don't care. He knows that this is meant to be an easy course and does not attempt to make it anything other than what is is.
Whitworth is passionate and very knowledgeable about history. His enthusiasm is almost contagious! . Attendance isn't mandatory, but it's a good idea to attend class because he doesn't post notes online and everything is lecture based. All we have is 3 exams the whole semester! Overall, this was one of my favorite classes!
TAKE HIM!!! attend to class to save your time with studying.. dont buy the book just right down key words he gives and search for the online.. easy A.. my best history Dr
Such a great professor. He is clear about what is on the exam. He is an easy grader if you know your stuff. The class is really interesting and soooo easy! No outside work except for studying for 3 exams.
Great professor, test are based on lectures and essay based. Attend class and take good notes and test are a breeze, textbook is not necessary. He is very helpful and teaches like hes telling a story. Take him, a guarantee easy A!
Professor Whitworth is a very nice man, and genuinely cares about his students. Class is based on 3 test grades. Tests are all-essay but come straight from his lectures. Don't buy the book. Come to class, take notes, and study a bit for the tests and you will do well. I'm taking him again for 104!
Really good professor. I didn't feel like I had to memorize anything I actually learned it. Very clear about expectations on the test.
I took Whitworth for History 103 and again for his 104 class just because he's awesome. TAKE NOTES and go to class or you wont pass. I didn't read the textbook at all and got an A in both classes by taking good notes. Tests are essays but are the easiest essay tests ever if you take notes and STUDY! Cares about his students and is understanding.
Take this class for history! You must go to class and take notes. Easy A if you do, but you can earn a C with very little effort. There are 3 essay tests. Make sure you write as much info as you can for the tests even if you feel you are being repetitive. He's very nice and always willing to help!
Honestly he's just a really boring professor who doesn't go in chronological order in a history class... If you can take someone else do because this classes are early in the morning and are hard to sit throughj
Whitworth is a great guy. He presents history as this big epic story and his lectures are actually really intriguing. He's pretty clear as he's lecturing, but if you're ever confused about something he'll help you out. There are very few tests, but if you had a pulse in class and did some light studying, then you'll be fine.
If you want a class where all you do is take good notes and listen then definitely take him. He teaches "American History" so he's gonna have his facts skewed a bit, but it's an easy class to get through for credit! Don't buy the book, just attend class--and you can still get by with every now and then.
Whitworth is your sweater-vest wearing grandpa teaching you history. He's somewhat monotone, but lectures in a story telling way. Everything you need for your written exams (write paragraphs on 10 topics) are straight from his lectures. Don't buy the textbook! Just come to class, take notes, and you're good. Easy A! The Bad: Morning class.
Whitworth is a great professor and it's clear that he's passionate about what he teaches. Classes consists of him lecturing. There are 3 tests. The final is just the third test. The textbook isn't needed because the tests are based off his lectures only. He's a really easy grader. Write as much as you know. I'm taking him for 104 next semester.
Willing to work with you. Whitworth is an amazing guy and truly wants to see everyone succeed. He literally saved my semester. The test are written so attending class is a must.
I took him for 103 and it was pretty good. This time around for 104.... Not so sure. He has gotten really bad about forgetting information, jumping around from topic to topic in lectures and just can't really stay on topic. Don't need a book just come to class bold everything he writes down and be able to write on each of those bolded terms.
I am not the biggest fan of history, but i do not mind it. He was awesome, he is an old guy, and he obviously does this because he loves history, his lectures are not the most exciting but he gets alot of information across. I took really good notes, and just studied them the week before the test and got 100 on all test. Highly recommend
THE BEST TEACHER EVER!!! You do not need to buy the book. He really loves and know his history which is great to see. I have gotten 100's on all of the tests. As long as you go to class and study your notes, you should have no problem passing. He mentions things in class for a reason, so remember them. He is also the cutest old man teacher ever.
It's not an easy class. There are no online lectures. DB participation in mandatory. Prof Whitworth gives you study guides, which include people and historic events that the student has to research and fill in by themselves. Exams are based on this research and you will have to write down by memory a few paragraphs about the subjects mentioned.
If you don't enjoy writing and/or tests aren't your strong suit, don't take him. The entire grade is based on three short answer tests. No extra credit. His lectures can be helpful, but he's extremely unclear on what the test will entail, and his grading methods seem pretty arbitrary. Unnecessarily difficult for a survey course, IMO.
Whole course is made of 3 tests so its nearly impossible to get an A. He is old and boring but you have no choice but to listen because God only knows what will pop up if you don't. Very nice guy and relaxed class setting, but you get what you give. If you don't show up or pay attention, you'll be lost when it comes time for the written tests
Whitworth is great. The class is pretty lecture heavy but he talks slowly enough it's not difficult to get everything down, he also talks about history as if he was describing the plot of his favorite book, like he still can't believe it. It's super entertaining. As long as you show up, take notes, and study before the test you'll be perfectly fine
He's an awesome professor and really cares about his students. His class was literally just him talking, so you have to show up to class and take notes to pass. The only assignments were the tests (no final!) but all you had to do to get an A was memorize your notes. He answered questions clearly and in detail, and he was just easygoing all around.
Professor Whitworth just might be the best professor at VCU! His lectures are extremely interesting. His grading criteria is as clear as day, 3 tests so average them and that is your final grade. There is no cumulative final exam. Overall he's a great and respected person. He's an outstanding professor and I highly recommend him!!
He makes you work for everything you earn and you MUST take notes. Almost all the information that comes on tests is directly from your notes and you MUST be attentive in class. Don't be afraid to ask questions and pay attention. He's tough but when you listen, he speaks like he has been there before so you get the true meaning of history.
He is extremely kind and hes just so great to listen to, he makes the tests very easy. He has to be one of my favorite history teachers ever because he knows his stuff. You do 3 tests, 14 questions, you pick 10 of them and write in detail what you know about the topics. If you study well its an easy 100. His southern accent is also cool too!
He's great at explaining events in details. You have to write down as much of what he says, because you're only graded on 3 tests, no multiple choice. If you take good notes, you'll be fine. I've taken him for two semesters and I would keep taking his class if I could. Attendance doesn't count, but show up. He bases the tests off lectures, not book
He's a solid professor but sometimes doesn't lecture chronologically and uses a lot of fillers to take up time. Just show up to class and take as many notes as you can because there are 3 short answer tests. I was able to get 3 perfect scores throughout 2 semesters with him by going over my notes two-three times. DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK.
He's very respectful of students and answers all questions students have. Tests are not that hard, but you must go to class to get the notes. The test comes directly from the notes and nothing is posted on blackboard. Before this class I was not that interested in history, and although his lectures can be long they are quite interesting!
You only get 3 tests to make your final grade, but his lectures are very clear and it's easy to take from them what to study. He's not a hard grader, as long as you can prove that you've been paying attention in class and know what you're talking about. The textbook is a useful supplement, but not necessary. A great professor!
I LOVE professor Whitworth! He is the sweetest and well respectful man. I actually enjoy going to class. The way he lectures he not bad at all because of the way he speaks about history. He actually makes me interested about the lecture. Yes, there are only 3 exams- they're all written exams. Definitely go to class and take notes!
Honestly he never knows what he is talking about. Students often correct him. Test are harder then you would think.
I don't understand why that person said what they said about him being awful or him not knowing what he is teaching about. That person probably didn't go to class often. Anyways, Prof. Whitworth is very intelligent and teaches with passion. Take him, you won't regret it.
Truly a great professor. Very kind and very passionate about what he does. You can see how much he really enjoys teaching history. I had him for both HIST 103 and 104 and received A's for both courses. Very easy and straightforward class. The 3 tests are written short answer and they're very easy A's if you show up. He's also a very funny guy!
very easy if you just show up and take notes. i am not a good student normally but got an A in this class. 3 tests make up your grade, DONT BUY TEXTBOOK YOU DONT NEED IT. tests are key terms defined in a bluebook.
He is the sweetest old man! His lectures can get funny because if his personality. You can tell he is passionate about what he is teaching. As for passing the class. Dont miss the lectures. EASY NOTE TAKING. Youll do fine on his 3 exams.
He is such a kind professor. He's interested in what he is teaching but is often not entirely correct on the subject. I have had him for 103 and 104. His class is an easy A if you go to class and take good notes. Don't buy the textbook, just take notes on his lectures and the exams will be easy. You pick 10/14 terms/definitions & write about them
It was 3 tests. I failed the first two so I could'nt get a passing grade. There's a textbook but I didn't buy it. Most of the test content came from the lecture. The test were writing only by choosing 10 topics and if it wasnt word from word you got a low score. He hand writes his notes and does not post online. No TA or SI.
William is an old school type professor. The entire class is him talking while writing notes down. The class is 2 exams and a final. For the exams he gives 14 terms and you free write about 10 of them. He is a sweet old man & funny. Also, his voice is very soothing. Attendance isn't mandatory but tests are from his notes and the textbook.
Prof. W is one of my favorite professors of all time. I had him for 103 & 104. He truly cares about his students, if you make time to go talk to him, he is always willing to help you with anything you may be struggling with! It is a lot of info, no notes are posted. Just go to class, take good notes + pay attention to what he says and you'll pass!
Class was "taught" asynchronous, which means read a chapter or two of your textbook every week and that is your class time for the week. All of the content on the tests is found in the weekly "module" which lists keywords and 2-3 short answer questions. Class was not difficult, but I did not see/hear from the professor once besides email updates.
Love Professor Whitworth! I took his class asynchronously and basically all you are graded on are discussion posts (every other week), tests, and one project. All of which are very easy; would definitely recommend!
I'm enrolled in his MWF classes, but the class is run in an asynchronous manner. The only time you are required to be 'in class' for a certain day is exam days where you are to take the exam in that class period. I wouldn't say that he's EASY. You have to be extremely detailed in your answers, giving him exactly what he wants. Be careful w/ wording
very organized online class, only problem is no late work
Extremely easy going! Answers emails and is very nice.
Professor Whitworth is definitely the easiest professor to have at VCU. I didn't do none of the readings, took zero notes, nothing. I did the discussion board posts and exams which were very easy. Completed the Smithsonian project at the end and that was it. I'm walking out of the class with almost a solid 100%. Take him to help your GPA!
I cannot attest to Prof. Whitworth's ability in a classroom, however, his ability to operate zoom is abhorrent. Most days class would not happen because he could not figure out how to start it. There is really no way to determine what information he will care about when grading exams, with him giving out seemingly random grades. Do not take this.
Worst professor I've ever had, The class is graded purely by three exams, and the grading is arbitrary and unclear. The exams are all written, no room for improvement. If you do poorly on any of the three of them, you're practically set for failure.
There are very few assignments for this course, 3 exams and 3 discussion boards, but they are very simple and straightforward. He does offer a textbook, but I did not use it I relied on his recorded lectures. Exams are all written, no multiple choice, but if you essentially spit out whatever you can remember on that topic you'll be in the clear
Basic 100-level history class, with likely an easy A for anyone. Tells exactly what to study for in the textbook each week, with good (although often untimely) lecture videos. Three exams in semester, all written short answer and clearly laid out. Two longer discussion posts with engaging topics and not hard to write. Good professor!
