He's kinda mean sometimes, but he loves his subject.
good teacher, very enthusiastic, course notes available in library, generally makes class a fun place to be... just don't be late.
this guy is a totally fun professor. he's hard to take notes off of but fortunately you can buy them at the bookstore. very knowledgable and passionate about the subject.
Good professor. Don't EVER show up late for his class. Make sure you buy his lecture notes before the second class. Grades completely off of exams, so study well! I would definitely take another class from him.
If you buy the study guide, and memorise it you could probably ace every test. The guy is wierd but if you buy the notes that will work in your favor.
funny professor who knows his stuff and wants to make sure that you do too by the time the term ends.
I think William is a good instructor because he knows how to turn something dull into something interesting. To keep the class's interest, he would tell an anecdote or joke. I applaude him for honing his skill for teaching. It takes guts to do that. I respect him, for he is well-rounded and interested in foreign cultures. Plus, he's cute.
Buy the lecture notes from the library and don't bother buying the book...especially if it's too expensive for you! i got an A in the class WITHOUT EVER READING ANY OF THE BOOK. great teacher, very funny, very amusing. awesome subjects brought to life with a crazy crazy instructor.
a charismatic professor. very passionate about anthropology. traditional, yet full of allegorical interjections about various things. i learned a great deal about with dr. wihr, and because of him have decided to take more classes on the subject.
Awesome teacher! Every class was fun and interesting, never a dull moment. I only wish I had known to mostly study the lecture notes and only the books once in awhile. This is because there is far too much information in the books, and he only asks a few questions on tests about the book material. Grasp the big picture above all else!
liked him very much. made learning interesting

Awesome! He knows his stuff!

He know's his stuff, but I feel that he's a jerk. I wouldn't recommend him.
this guy is a damn ****, especially when his beard is full grown. he's never been married (what a damn PIIIIIIIIIIIIIMP) and likes to ski alot and break bones. he basically hints at the fact that god doesnt exist the whole class by using the word "divine intervention" in a sarcastic way. whether you like him or not, hes a damn good teacher. just dont be late to his class, he gets mad if you're over 1 second late
WOW, what a character. He is one of the most intriguing characters I have ever come across in my short lifetime. Hard to take notes off of and sometimes trails off with side notes, but thats good. He mixes the subject with his own experiences and often pop culture. Class can feel draining but he is always enthused which im sure everyone likes. I love when he said "I am an anthropologist who teaches, not an anthropology teacher!" Dude you rock!
I took this class spring 05 and let me just say that I was totally suprised. He was very interesting and intrigued me greatly with his stories. I came out of the class more interested than going into it. His lecture notes helped a lot too, its actually what he uses to lecture from so go get it a the bookstore, its a great investment!
Interesting teacher. Jumps around at a frenetic pace. To much for an early morning class. Difficult to keep up with the pace. Cracks the same jokes repeatedly. Sometimes funny ones. The teacher all the students want to have beers with.
Great prof. Never a dull moment. Likes to crack jokes and tell stories. You better know your pop culture, because he's chock full o'references. The Lecture Notes are VITAL! I bought the book, but didn't really read much. Just what interested me and parts that helped claify information. Pretty easy-going. Only asks that people are on time.
loved the joke cracking, even if they werent funny. wasnt open to nonevolution discussion. its not a "theory" to him.
Great lecturer with high but not unreasonable expectations for tests. Great story.
Wihr is the sort of guy who is not only educated and a dapper dresser but is also entertaining. Though prone to repeat himself often and sometimes to segue into no real specific point,he really is a jewel fo a professor. A true academic which is rare these days it would seem, especially at PCC.
Mr. William Saxe Wirh is an interesting teacher. He never says anything that's boring. He takes anthropology and presents it in a interesting fashion. He makes popular culture references and jokes as well. His tests are really easy. All you need to do is buy his notes from the bookstore, study them and attend his lectures.
Liked listening to him, but gathered nothing useable from the lectures. Tried taking notes but failed miserably. I like his clothes and his jokes, but he seems kinda jerky and the information he was trying to get across wouldn't stay in my head for more than 5 seconds.
Repeats the information almost as much as his jokes. He goes on 15min tangents about where he has gone, and things he has done. Other than that he's ok.
interesting character. snazzy threads. repeats jokes. the material was difficult for me at times and his lectures could get boring. overall i think he's smart at what he does. tests: essay questions, multiple choice, and t/f. i did horrible in the beginning but he noticed my tough improvement.
brilliant man! seriously, one can tell the guy loves what he teaches. he has some good jokes too. ha.
Dr Wihr is one of the most entertaining professors I've had. He is always willing to answer questions (on topic) and though his lectures are quite difficult to follow, one can usually glean general info. Repeats occasionally but once he remembers which class knows what it kind of dies down.
He is very helpful. Dr.Wihr wll answer questions and encourages class discussion. His test are very fair and pretty simple, if you have read the material and studyied. His lectures are energetic. He does asked that you are ON TIME not to much to ask

So this is what happens when a hippy becomes a marine and both facets dominate a personality. Follow his notes, try to pull lecture out of digression and don't be late. He is a fun prof, if oddly despotic at times, he is funny more than anything else and knows his stuff, well worth taking his class.
What a great teacher! I first I wasnt sure about him but he grew on me. He knows his stuff and is happy to clarify and answer questions. He is funny in his own way. He creates copies of his lecture notes for sale in the bookstore. I highly recomend these as it is exactly what he lectures from and helps when studying for tests, you also need to read
I was too shy to talk to him much, but I would have liked him to know I loved his wonderful class. His lessons and anecdotes stuck with me, I laughed and learned. And, he's kind of a cute. I will definitely take another of his classes.
Somehow manages simultaneous irreverence and stodginess. Great guy, great instructor. Refreshingly ill-mannered, at times, and willing to ignore rules, & curriculum in order to open straight-forward, honest communication with class. Got a high grade, but still think his curve is rough.
Great professor! My first class with him I received a C because I didn't expect his exams to be so hard. The next class I received an A because I knew what to expect. Read, study, and buy the lecture notes. He is helpful if you are proactive and ask questions & visit during office hours. He is amusing and knows his stuff. Don't be late to class!
This will be my third time taking Dr. Wihr's classes- he's awesome! Not an easy class, but not too hard either. I will probably take at least another one or two before I graduate. Highly Recommended!!!

If you are not great with tests his classes are not for you. He can be a nice guy if he picks you out of the crowd. And not so nice if you don't talk to him about why you were absent. Just get on his good side.
I thought he was a very good teacher. Just follow the study guides and the lecture notes he gives for the tests and you will be fine. He is a little hard to follow in class but he is pretty funny! I recommend him!!!
Dr. Wihr is handsome, charming and intelligent. If you look at the way he teaches and compare it to the other instructors, you'll see he is organized and considerate. He doesn't grade harshly if you show up to class, take notes and ask questions. Nor does he rely on the book. For the exams: buy the notes and study them and refer to the textbook.
dr. wihr: passionate and knowledgeable. the class: useful and fairly comprehensive. my grade: a. i won't take a class from him again. teaching style doesn't suit me; he opens his mouth and pours out a lecture, you open your mind and let it all in. patriarchal power dynamic in class. comfortable with his stereotypes, comfortable with sharing them.
Mr. Wihr is one of the greatest instructors at PCC because he has a PhD. He knows how to teach well and helps anyone understand his lessons. People who put him down are clearly not ready to transfer to a university. Over there, the instructors are more challenging so people should be thankful Mr. Wihr is understanding towards his students.
Great teacher and incredibly knowledgeable. It's not a hard A, but you need to be serious about the class. This is the closest I've gotten to a real college course at PCC and I have never learned so much. All you need for an A is to show up, pay attention and study his notes.
The first day of class, I took a front seat and a mustached man in a snazzy pinstripe suit approached the chalkboard. He seems intimidating, but he's very nice, cracks many jokes, and reminds me of an adventure book protagonist, with crazy experience in his field. His class wasn't easy, but studying hard got me B's on tests and I learned SO much.<3
Dr. Wihr is fantastic. One of the best professors I've ever had! I went from being mildly interested in the subject to thinking it's absolutely fascinating. Make sure you come to class, but if you mess up he will be willing to work with you (within reason). I recommend him 100%!
Prof. Wihr is a good lecturer who show his passion for anthropology.
Good lecturer & charismatic. Hard to sift through his personal anecdotes and lecture material. If you're a visual learner, make sure you print out his notes, although they are unavailable until the end of the week's classes; the class will be much easier for you then.
I really enjoy attending class. He brings anthropology to life through his personal stories.
Quite a character. I still can't make up my mind if I like him. He repeats himself, gives hard to follow lectures and unfair pop quizzes, yet he is smart, eccentric, passionate about anthro, and wears snazzy suits. Take his class just because it's an experience like no other...
Crazy man but very entertaining. I only took the class for a science credit but he made me love the subject. He makes the class interesting and is an awesome teacher. He posts he's lecture notes online which really help. READ THEM. tests aren't too hard. He gives pop quizzes but if you read you are set. He acts like he's a hard teacher but he isnt.
One of the best instructors I have ever had. Great class, very informative. He knows his stuff, use your notes and since he talks so fast get the notes he posts. They come in very handy for the tests. Which will be the only thing you are graded on.
I had him for 2 classes...1 on campus and 1 online...I do not recommend the online class but taking one from him on campus is awesome! He loves what he teaches and wants you to love it too. He expects you to be on time---all of the time. And if you are late and he lets you into class, to sit in the back of class and be quiet!
pretty good teacher. He really likes what he does and made me more interested in it too. A lot of reading but it's necessary to understand the lectures. He is a pretty easy going teacher just don't be late. And go to the zoo field trip if you want to be on his good side.
Very interesting guy, a bit hard to follow. Just show up every day, do your reading and try to keep up with wherever his mind takes him. Lots of jokes and anecdotes and references. Kind of reminds me of Michael Scott from the Office if he had a PHD in Anthropology.
The first day of the class I totally abhorred him. But I warmed up to him and actually look forward to going to his lectures. He is the coolest Argentine Equine I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. Sure he gets off topic sometimes, but it's always about something interesting. I would take classes taught by him again, He knows his stuff.
It doesn't make any sense that he chose his main method of teaching as lecture AND/WHILE talking too fast! SLOW DOWN! Listening to him is very interesting, but he's all over the place and as I'm trying to take note, he's both said and spelled the place/person/time period too fast and as I try to write it he's already on the next topic. Frustrating!
regarding those who comment that he talks too fast in lectures, he DOES, but it doesn't matter because he posts all of his lecture notes on line. sit back, enjoy the show (and it IS a show) and write down what you can. What you miss will be online if it is of any importance to the class. His class is fascinating, fun, and his grading is realistic.
One of the best professors I've ever had. Refreshingly professional, and respects his students enough to expect professionalism back. I highly recommend Whir for any one who actually wants to learn something for their money.
I initially had my doubts, but he is a wonderful teacher! His spontaneity, although challenging at times, makes the class enjoyable and fun. Dr. Wihr has a good sense of humor. And even though his tests can be very difficult, he is realistic with his grading curve. Thank you for a wonderful class Dr. Wihr!
Ok, I saw many positive comments so I took this teacher. Yes he is professional and knowledgeable about the subject. But I must warn you, if you are at all late, even 4 minutes (I was) he will not let you in class, or kick you out, and attendance is important as you take quizzes. Goes on many tangents, and tells lots of long unrelated stories.
Do your readings! You never know, there might be a pop quiz. But hey, isn't this what school is about? Come on now. He is a great professor and always wears his snazzy suits and tells great stories which by the way link into the lecture so its easy to remember concepts. Loads of experience and he's just a funny guy. Don't miss out!
Dr. Wihr is very knowledgeable about what he teaches and is a good teacher in this sense. He posts his notes online which is also helpful. However, I found his obvious name-dropping and bragging about his works to be rather tedious and ostentatious. He does go off into stories about whatever random adventure he?s gone on which is distracting.
"that is neither this, that, or the other thing" & "gag me with a ginsu" I should keep a tally of how much he says these two phrases. He can be incredibly silly, and is terribly nerdy but an overall good teacher.
His classes are not easy because there is a lot of reading and the lectures are full of information, as they should be. Be on time, listen, ask questions and appreciate his sense of humor. It weird and funny and he does a great performance both academically and in the way of keeping you awake and listening. Funny stories keep you listening
I was unsure of taking his class, but now I'm glad that I did. His lectures can be hard to follow but he does repeat himself to what is important. He is funny and corny sometimes, but he does expect you to be punctual. He post his lecture notes online - study that - most of the exam questions will cover that and just a few from the book.
The class was online. Instructor is a quirky, likable character; however, I regret taking class. Entire grade based on 2 exams. There is no room for error. And although, instructor is active in discussion board, the way class has been structured doesn't allow the clearest instruction. It was very difficult to learn anything, which made exams hard.
Funny guy. Great teacher. Interesting subject. Only complaint is the lack of points you can earn. There were only 2 midterms and the final. He did give 3 pop quizzes but they really didn't count toward your grade. For such a complicated subject, I would have expected some homework.
Very interestIng class. Lots of reading from books easily obtainable from public library. Reading can be a bit dry but Dr. Wihr provides great notes to clarify online. Funny Guy with lots good stories. Don't be late. Grade based on 3 tests, multiple&t/f, easy if you have done your reading and studied his notes. Will take another of his classes.
I looked forward to Dr. Wihr's class and was extremely interested in the subject. I was initially charmed by his wit, extensive vocabulary, and vast knowledge bank. However, I quickly became unimpressed when I felt I had no idea what to study for tests and classes seemed to drag on as they are strictly lecture style. I became bored and disappointed
His three piece suits are charming, and he is highly entertaining in a rogue professor sort of way, but be advised!!! You NEED to find his online notes and STUDY THAT. The main thing to pay attention to in class is HIS OPINION, take notes on that as it is often a wild card question on the test that is not in his notes but counts. Good luck!
One of the best online courses I have taken! Discussions are mandatory but not graded but well worth writing on because his comments are great. There is an online midterm and an at campus final. Both are multiple choice/T&F. As long as you read the text and study the keywords easy A!
My favorite instructor! He is a DR. in the field and knows his stuff. Really funny! If you do your best and study hard, give him and his class respect(Do not be late, eat, drink ect.)You will be fine.He really wants his students to do well and to learn.Pay attention to the slides and make sure you study the online notes. This guys mind is incredible.
He is a brilliant teacher and absolutely hilarious. Although sometimes he DOES repeat his stories a few times... they're worth listening to as he has ABSOLUTELY lived his life. Honestly, he is just so ridiculously full of SO MUCH knowledge (except mathematics such as calc/precalc he admites not that he needs it), but i found him SO sexy.
HE'S NOT A JERK. HE DEMANDS RESPECT,BUT IN A SORT OF FUNNY WAY. THERE'RE PEOPLE THAT TAKE IT THE WRONG WAY AND THEIR FEATHERS GET RUFFLED. IE: IF YOU'RE LATE & HE SASSES YOU, HAVE A WITTY RESPONSE, HE'LL LAUGH. HE'S SO NOT A JERK, THERE ARE JUST A LOT OF INCONSIDERATE SELFISH KIDS OUT THERE. HE'S WORKED HARD, GROW UP AND BE RESPECTFUL.
Dr Wihr is an excellent, exciting professor. He is a stickler for rules and attendance, but a real sweatheart otherwise. If you come to class, read the chapters, and esp. review his lecture notes-then you will do very well in this class. He only lectures(no activities/wrksheets)but encourages discussions. This class is a dream, I highly recommend it.
Dr. Wihr is witty and clever, and often his remarks in the discussion (I took his online class) offend students as he lacks internet etiquette (not that it counts for anything). His comments often come off as snarky and condescending due too his love of all caps and abrupt punctuation. I would definitly not take any of his classes again.
Dr. William Saxe Wihr is a crazy and eccentric teacher. His class was very inspirational. Reading the text book and attending class is important. I didn't ask as many questions as I would have liked to, which I now regret. TALK TO HIM. True, he might ruffle your feathers a bit, but he's actually an amazing person. Learn to spell his full name.
When I first met Dr. Wihr, I seen a little bit of my self. He has inspired me to "dig" deeper into hominid ancestry and evolution. Thank You Dr. Wihr.
Mr. Wihr is not a bad instructor, he just really wants his student to do well. Heâ??s old school, so he does not believe in wearing hats in class, no eating, drinking, pay attention and do ask question. There is no home because he does not believe that college students should be deal with busy work. Overall show up and read.
Dr. Wihr is a hard grader but he only wants to help his students succeed. Good Bloke to take for any anthropology class.
ATH102 online and I wouldn't recommend it. There is far too much content crammed into a 100 level class and the exams are ridiculously specific. The discussion topics are lengthy and in depth. Lots of reading and not much else. Nothing else actually. Wirh seems sarcastic online. I don't know how he is in person.
I took his online course, his personality doesn't translate into text that well.He came across as condescending and egotistical the whole term, correcting everyone's discussions instead of encouraging. Course content advanced, lots of memorizing specific years, people and places for tests.
I will never forget my weekly arguments with Dr. Wihr. Fantastic class if you're interested in where we come from. Ask him to go for a beer after class and get to know him. Very interesting guy...
Great teacher, great stories. Old school, so show up and pay attention. No HW, doesn't believe in busywork. I've never had a teacher so interested in seeing his students succeed. He'll even help on tests, giving everything but the answer itself. If you show up and listen, you'll learn a lot from someone who's been around the block more than once!
Very informative and extremely knowledgeable in numerous subjects. I learned a great deal from Dr. Wihr
One of the most engaging professors at PCC. Many students thought his stories were old/boring but if you listen to them remembering answers to test questions is remarkably easy. Study your notes and just LISTEN to the man and you'll pass the test and be incredibly amused. Only homework is reading, so if you fail it's your own laziness at work.
I really love my textbook, love the subject... but the lectures are nothing but classroom conversation and anecdotes. Might want to take this as an online course if you have the option.
Super engaging, friendly and funny guy. I happen to like his anecdotes and stories- hopefully that person dropped, because those stories help me relate with facts. I'll definitely be taking more of his classes!
So boring. Any interest I had in the subject were drained. No, no, no!
Condescending! I think he thinks he's witty and clever, but he's mostly overcritical, instead of supportive. I recommend any other teacher. Wish I'd never signed up!SERIOUSLY!!!
This class is 100% lecture based. If you depend on interaction, projects, homework or assignments to help with comprehension of class material, this class is not for you! Professor Wihr moves too fast and tries to teach a lot of information in a short period of time. If you don't have a background to the criteria, you may struggle with this class.
What charactor!! Loved watching tell of his travels, passionate about his teachings. Take notes, DONT be late, he's a jokester but old school...
He is a strange guy, likes to talk about past girlfriends and all of the animals in his backyard. His lectures are fine even if they are a bit dull, take good notes you'll use them on the tests. He is an old school guy, no hats in class and don't be late. The only real complaint I'd have is that he needs to update, using a slide projector in 2014?
After 5 years of higher ed, I still remember a great deal of what WW taught me. His courses will prepare you for university and life. Yes, he expects you to show up on time. If your offended or surprised by this you're going to have trouble in the real world. Confused? Go to office hours, he is a kind and funny man who is willing to help.
If you're looking for an easy A and taking it for your gen. ed. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Far too much reading and homework for a 101 class. Tests are EXTREMELY SPECIFIC. Wouldn't be surprised if he made the test questions by opening up to a random page and selecting a random sentence in the book.
I took this class online as a "blow off" class cause I needed extra credits to stay full time and it sounded interesting. I learned so much! All you have are weekly discussions, online midterm and in-person final (which I found annoying cause its an online class). Tests aren't hard, multiple choice usually with a "throw away" answer. Nice guy.
Dr. Wihr is great! Loves the topic, wants to share insights and help students learn, and is very conscientious grader. You will need to work hard to get an A in his class, but you will learn a bunch from him and your fellow classmates through online discussions. Really enjoyed his class and learned a bunch!
Whir uses outdated materials and spends more time on tangents and anecdotes than on teaching. His course centers on what he learned in college and discludes new information. This class was disappointing, and I wouldnt suggest it. While its an easy pass if you follow the notes, Whirs downfall is his monotony and failure to evolve with the times.
If Wihr's humor didn't kill me it was the rest of the lecture. His jokes are great at first, then stale once you hear the the 8th or 9th time. If you plan on taking the course, I suggest being prepared to read the dreary textbook and study often. You'll only have two tests all term, but they aren't easy.
Dr. William Saxe Wihr, is a bit dated and lecture heavy, but he is a great guy and very entertaining.
Professor William Wihr was an excellent instructor in my experience. The course I took was in an online format. He added interesting facts to our weekly discussions that helped me remember certain concepts that reflected in the final. While the course was heavy on reading. If you do the assigned reading and pay attention. You will be fine!
You don't need to do any of the readings or take any notes to do well. Just study HIS notes before an exam and you can easily get an A. He's a good guy and he's funny, but he pretty much just reads his notes all lecture. If you don't like sitting in class for 2 hours and only being graded on 3 exams, he probably isn't the professor for you.
This guy will bend over backwards for you if you reach out to him. He has no problems lecturing over the phone for HOURS if you let him. He will tell you how it is, so don't take it personal, but if you show him you are trying, he will help you. WATCH OUT though. 70% or more of your grade comes from 2 exams. he does not believe in quizzes.
SUPER Intense 12-16 hrs or reading/study. Wkly disc and responses. Must read ALL of other students posts or he marks you down. Must call him DOCTOR Wihr. He doesn't respond to Mr or Prof. Extremely smart and passionate about the subject matter. If you like to read and can get past his crusty comments, he is brilliant and you'll learn a LOT.
He is passionate about Anthropology and teaching BUT for an introduction class it felt very advanced. Only two tests which make up over half of your grade along with online discussions which dont count for a lot of points even though they require a lot of work. Be prepared to read and devote a lot of time to the chapters. Can't procrastinate
He is one of the smartest men you will ever meet The class is mostly lecture with with old school slide shows and films throughout the course. Get ready to do a lot of listening in Dr Wihr's classes but if you just embrace his absolute quirkiness it's totally fun. And no homework to turn in. Wihr is smart and so funny without even realizing it.
Dr. Wihr is awesome, his online format is great. Weekly discussions plus a midterm and a final. He responds to students forums and provided really good discussions. He will challenge your worldview and make you think critically about the topics. He wants students to do well and is willing to really work with students to get the grade they want.
I really like Dr. Wihr. Very knowledgeable. The only thing I wish was different is that the midterm and final make up about 80% of your grade. Fail one of those and fail the class. Scary!! Also not allowed to use notes on the 2 big exams. There's a lot of memorization. But he's a good professor and his lectures are very interesting.
So here's the deal: What Dr. Wihr wants is quite simple, but requires you to DO THE WORK. This is a very discussion-heavy course although it's online. My best advice to is you have to *truly* read ALL discussion posts before posting your own!! Log in every day, even if you're not posting and stay up on reading each post. Dr. Wihr can see thru bull*
