Not helpful, should only teach graduate level science!
good lectures, cares about student learning
He is very passionate about his subject, making lectures very enjoyable. Of course, the class is challenging, but if you do the assigned reading from the beginning of the semester, not getting behind, you should do well on the tests. He curves very generously, especially at the end of the semester. I learned a ton in this class.
He's an excellent teacher, but the class is designed to be difficult. He curves tests, so if you study ahead of time, you'll be fine. Read the book with your notes. Understand the concepts.
He taught this class in the Cox Auditorium so it wasn't easy to ask questions. I struggled with the course as many of my classmates have. He does often curve the tests though so that's always a good thing.
Amazing! Tries his hardest to engage students and help them learn, not memorize. Incorporates useful demonstrations to drive the point home and is willing to help the students with anything they may need. The class is harder, but he tries to be lenient. Is very passionate about biology, thus making it interesting.

Very nice guy, great personality, willing to help when he can. Even though the class was huge (200+) he still answered questions when people raised their hands. If you study moderately, complete all the quizzes, and go to class, you will certainly get a C or higher.
By far the greatest Biology teacher I have ever had. Make sure to take good notes and fill out the outlines using the book. The course is designed to be hard, but he is extremely helpful! I definitely recommend taking his Biol 1201 course.
Great professor. I came into this class with virtually no Biology knowledge, and I have learned a ton. The tests are tough- make SURE to take the pretests he offers. Theyre extremely helpful in prep for exam. Go to class for clicker question credit,go to exam review sessions, use book to study with notes. He loves Biology so the class is interesting
Advisor told me to take this class, but it was horrible. It was the first F i made in college. Hated the computer testing. I hear Marrone is the one to take
Extremely good teacher! Very enthusiastic and animated while teaching and drives rather difficult concepts home real fast and good. Does not force you to use a text or mastering biology. Tests are kinda hard and computer-based. Make good use of the pretests! One major plus point is that he posts all his lectures online. Highly recommended!
Awesome teacher! He really loves biology, which is evident in his lectures. He's very enthusiastic and very helpful if you have questions. If you take good notes and keep up with the material you should do well. I highly recommend going to the before-test review sessions! They helped a lot! I learned so much in his class and finished with an A!
great teacher! you will never get bored in his class. as long as you pay attention in the class very time, and look over the notes he posted. you can understand at least 80% of your textbook without reading it!
Wischusen is a very good teacher. He is enthusiastic about his class, even though it's a class of ~800. He is very helpful and has two review sessions per test. One conducted himself and the other by his TA. Textbook use is limited mostly to mastering biology supplements. Take good notes, pay attention, take the pretests. You'll be fine. A-B.
Best teacher for Biology 1201. Absolutely love his class and he is extremely helpful in his after class meetings and "run along" meetings. Great teacher, Great class, studying is involved in order to pass however.
Dr. Wischusen is a fantastic teacher. He is very enthusiastic about biology and is very good at explaining it. You need to study the lecture notes and the textbook in order to do well. But I would definitely recommend taking Wischusen. He knows how to make class interesting.
He's both interesting and brilliant at what he does. Highly recommended.
Very interesting class. From what I've heard from others, he seems like the most difficult of the biology teachers. Tests are hard but not impossible. Very in-depth in information and always gives real world examples of biological processes. Recommend that only those serious about Biology take him, otherwise you won't be happy
Excellent teacher - has great office hours and will go out of his way to help you understand. His tests are pretty hard but he offers pre-tests which are VERY good representations of what the actual exam will be like.
he is a very good teacher and loves what he teaches, but this class in general is hard. if you HAVE to take this class, take Wischusen bc he cares about his students. if you don't go to class, you will fall so far behind--the textbook will not help. very time consuming bc the info is given so fast and is not easy. but bill is nice and cares.

A great teacher in my opinion. I got an A in the class but I did have to study several days for each test. Tests are all pretty hard and in-depth. Attendance and lots of studying are both required in order to do well
Wischusen is worth taking. He is amazing professor and it is very important to have your basic biology knowledge straight from the beginning (specially if you are a science major) he makes it all clear. I recommend everyone to take him. I got an A, but you do wanna show up to class... and take notes ...
Great teacher.Make sure you keep up with the readings he assigns to help you when you are taking notes in class. He gives pre-test which are very similar for this class. He is always willing to help, so go talk if you need to.
This teacher is unbelievably well-spoken and clear. He really knows his stuff! However, the class is not easy. You have to really study...and not just memorize, LEARN! Lovely teacher :)
Dr. Wischusen is the best teacher I had this semester. He knows his stuff, and really wants you to learn. He's tough, but he's always willing to help anyone that goes to his office hours. Take Wischusen.
He's very hard but knows his stuff! Its alot of work but you'll be better off for 1202 if you take him! go to class!!! there are clicker questions everyday.
Dr. Wischusen is one of the best professors I've had. His class is not easy, but it is not impossible to make a good grade. To pass his class, go to class! Do the readings he gives you in class before you come to class. This helps your understanding like you wouldn't believe! Go to office hours with any question & he'll explain it so you understand
Dr. Wischusen was my favorite professor my first semeter at LSU. He is very interesting and uses different techniques every lecture. You should go to class because hearing him explain concepts is better than any book can describe. Tough test but if you study, you're in good shape! You should definately take him! he's amazing!
Dr. Wischusen was a great teacher. The class was tough and I got an A but only after studying well in advance for all the tests. Study and go to class and pay attention and you'll be fine. Especially watch out for the 2nd test to, it was a toughie
I loved and looked forward to Wischusen's class. He is a good teacher, and if you learn like I do (by listening), you won't have an overwhelming amount to study (I don't usually use my textbooks too often, and his class was no exception.) As long as you do the MasteringBiology assignments (which can be somewhat time consuming), you will be okay!
Great guy, great teacher, really knows his stuff. However, if you are a slacker at all like me, you won't do well. I made a D and had to re-take it. His tests are pretty hard. I highly recommend Siebenaller if you can get him. Tests and quizzes are way easier. Wischusen is a great teacher though.
Dr. Bill was a great Biology teacher! Watching the pre-lecture videos and going to class are a must, though. The clicker questions and questions from Mastering Bio show up on his tests. He made Biology interesting and even threw in some jokes along the way.
Dr. Wischusen is a GREAT teacher. In a class of 800, he made it seem like it was a class of 20. If you do bad on a test, go to him during office hours or whenever you can. Do everything he tells you to do and you will be fine. The test are hard, and you have to commit a lot of time to this class, but I recommend him to anyone and everyone.
Dr. Bill is a great teacher! He posts pre-lecture videos which help a lot. He does clicker questions, but he drops the lowest four grades, so going to every class isn't mandatory, but it does hurt you. You really don't need the textbook. Just go to class, watch the pre-lecture videos, and take the Mastering Biology quizzes and Practice Tests!
Great teacher, listen closely to lectures and use the practice test to your advantage. Test are a pain though be ready to study a lot for them. Overall awesome teacher and guy
Dr. Bill is a good teacher, but very challenging. You have to study hard for every exam. He does not curve, does not drop the lowest grade, and never cancels class. There are weekly quizzes and practice test which helped my grade a lot. Practice test questions help to study for the exam as well.
Wischusen is a fantastic teacher. There are 4 tests and daily/weekly quizzes. If you watch his pre lectures/powerpoints before and during class you should be fine. I finished with a 98 (A+) in the class. As long as you keep up with the work and study his pre tests and quizzes online, you should get an A. Many ppl had trouble though. Do the work!
No need to take notes in class, just answer the clicker questions. Posts videos online that are more or less the lectures themselves. Tests aren't hard. Just get your clicker points, do your homework, and study a day or two before the test and you should get an A.
MasteringBiology and in-class clicker questions are your savior. Dr. Bill makes his tests ridiculously hard, and doesn't help when you go in his office - at least he didn't help me when I went. I made a 69.9 and got a D. Don't expect any help on the final.
If you study hard, you will pass. Take notes on his clicker questions because they are very similar to his test questions. He's not generous to curving or giving out points. Passed with a B.
GREAT! Learned a lot and his teaching style is effective. Material wasn't very interesting but he made class fun.
Biology 1201 is just a challenging course. Go to class, do the clicker questions. Listen to the pre-lectures, do your mastering biology and study your notes. His lectures are interesting and the notes are VERY clear. You have to know how to apply concepts for exams. Great man, though. Always willing to help and tries to keep it interesting.
This class is difficult and you have to study A LOT. I didn't study for the first test and screwed myself out of an A barely. His tests are a little tricky but if you study they are not too bad. Got an A on the last 2 tests after learning how to study. Use the textbook and go to class! You will learn a lot! Find the test bank for the final.
you MUST study and actually look over your book and notes in this class! class is mandatory, you have to get a clicker and he gives you about 3-5 points of participation every day. He was very energetic and knew what he was talking about. Test were tricky, computer based.
Awesome class! 900 people in mine. Watch his online videos and take notes on them! The exam is basically from there. Don't need to go to class if you watch the videos and understand them! Plays music and puts a scientific quote up every morning. Exams are straightforward. Nothing tricky. Copy down clicker questions for exam. Great teacher!
Not easy material but he really cares about you understanding and learning it. Go to class, go to S.I, and go to his office hours with questions. form study groups!
Easily one of the best teachers on campus. Take him.
He can be very ambiguous with some of his lectures, and especially with some of his test questions. 55% of the total grade in the semester is based off tests, Mastering Biology is worth some 20% max. I have no problem with the material covered, but a number of his test questions have screwed me over a number of times.
Dr.Bill is a great instructor. Just go to class, pay attention to clicker questions and WATCH THE PRELECTURE VIDEOS! I swear they help so much, he puts them on moodle for a reason, so use them to your advantage.
This class is very interesting, and he keeps the class engaged even with 900 people! His tests can be tricky so make sure to review over all of his exam objectives. He's very helpful and willing to explain any concept! Watch the pre-lecture videos!
Very good at keeping you interested during lectures and definitely knows what he is talking about. Review sessions helped the most, just be sure to keep up with the information because it is a lot. Helpful during office hours
He's not a bad teacher, but his tests are pretty tricky. Also, make sure you watch the pre-lecture videos before class or you'll be lost.
He's a great teacher, and you can tell he generally wants to help his students. You should go to every class for the clicker questions and stuff, but his pre-lecture videos are just like the actual lectures he gives, so be sure to watch all of those. His tests are tricky, but if you study well and know your stuff, you'll do fine.
Dr. Bill knows what he teaches. His pre-lecture videos are extremely helpful study tools for exams. Questions from the test are mainly based on the videos & clicker questions in class. Taking pictures of clicker questions is very helpful. But his tests are very tricky!! This class requires A LOT of studying. Try to do well on online quizzes/tests!
Pretty straightforward class, if you go to class and study the pre lecture videos and practice exams, you get an A. If you don't you won't. He's a pretty good teacher and the SI can help you if you're having trouble
Dr. Wischusen is an INCREDIBLE teacher. If you pay attention in class, make note of clicker questions, and know the online homework backwards and forwards you will make an A on the test. His wording on some test questions is tricky, but the basic questions are easy if you understand concepts. Also very helpful to see him during office hours.
Gives pre-lecture videos before hand. These are basically what he talks about in class but he doesnt say everything in the videos so you still need to go to class. He tries to trick you on tests but the book isn't helpful. Watch the videos and take good notes. Also has clicker questions most days for points.
He tries really hard to give you all of the information you need to do well on his tests, but the way he words his tests can tend to be confusing. He is very helpful in his office hours. The reason this class is difficult for many is because it is typically a very large class, so it is not very easy to communicate in the class.
Looking back, this guy was the best professor I ever had at LSU. If you don't take him you're missing out. Clicker questions and pre lecture videos will really help you out, and he explains things very well while keeping it interesting. Must take if you are a bio major.
This class is taught by a TA, not Wischucen. Super easy class. Labs generally get out early.
I thought this was an easy class up until the 3rd exam, so watch out for that.If you wanna go hardcore, watch the pre-lecture videos in class, and pay attention. Make sure you get all the clicker question credit by missing no more than 4 classes, it may save you. It's the class of about 800 people, but learning in that environment was no problem.
This is for Wesley Frey. He was probably the most laid back TA I'll ever have. The class was pretty easy. Definitely go to him during office hours before a lab report is due because he'll correct most of your mistakes. Great guy!
I had Scott Kosiba. I thought he was kinda mean at first, but he grows on you. Quizzes are super easy, but make sure you do well on the lab reports. He grades harshly on those. Don't make careless errors on the written assignments bc they're really easy. The final wasn't too bad, but then again, it depends om which TA you have.
Great professor. I showed up to class, studied a small bit, and got an A. Dr. Wishusen knows what he's talking about and is very much available for office hours when you need help.
You have to put a lot of time and effort into this class. I found reading the textbook to be extremely helpful because he doesn't go into a lot of depth during his lectures. His tests are not based on memorization but on understanding and really applying the material. He's a good teacher, though. The online quizzes help a lot for the test!
Tough teacher and LOTS of critical thinking on tests. Definitely have to apply the information you get in lectures more than memorizing. HOWEVER, I am now in Micro2051 and I kept the notes I took from Wischusen's class and they are EXTREMELY helpful. He makes you truly understand the material which is very beneficial in the future w bad teachers.
I do not know how the average is a "A-" everyone I talk to is failing. He said "this class was made to fail people." This class is hard! Alot of critical thinking.
Wischusen is an awesome teacher! The course itself is just hard. Be prepared to read the textbook but most questions on the test are from it. If you understand the underlying concepts rather than just memorizing the power points you will do great. He is super helpful in office hours and one of my favorite professors!
Not a bad teacher, just a hard class. Tests are killer. Unless you've had previous knowledge with the material and feel like you really grasp it, I suggest studying the recommended hour to an hour and a half a day if you really need an A. If you're not going to do that, then you won't make an A. But not so hard if you want a B or C.
If you didn't take AP bio in high school, good luck. His tests are extremely hard, have no curve, and involve a lot of critical thinking. The class is meant to weed out the biolife science majors, so it's difficult. He uses a lot of in class clicker questions. All the quizzes and most of the practice tests are on quizlet.
He is a great teacher but his class is hard. Lots of material covered in a short amount time. You will do fine if you go to BIOS and his review sessions. Take notes and watch his pre-lecture videos and ALWAYS show up for class because if not you are screwed.
If not properly prepared, the test are going to be your worst nightmare. Got a C on the first one, and for the rest of the semester I was playing catch up. I am an A student and I will more than likely get a B in this class. Its tough, definitely, but an A is not impossible. He is a great teacher; the subject itself is just tough. Good luck.
This man is an amazing teacher. He knows his subject like the back of his hand and is willing to help with flexible office hours. Do not underestimate his first test. You will just be playing catch up if you do. You must study pre lec videos and the online portal. Test 3 is the hardest. You CANNOT cram in this class. Start studying a few days prior
The lecture is huge. Ours had 870 people in it. But he's such a great teacher! His tests are kind of hard, and you should definitely read the book to do well. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you should definitely go to class! He's hilarious too!
Bill was my favorite teacher and he knows the material very well. Participation in class (clicker questions) and masteringbiology will help (or hurt) your grade so go to class and take good notes, especially on what he's saying and not just powerpoints. Tests require a lot of critical thinking and application, so you need to study a good bit.
For the test, you have to fully understand the material. You can't just think you are going to pass because you memorized the information. Participation points bring up your grade if you do everything you are told (go to class, get 100s on masteringbiology). It is possible to get an A. I would recommend if you really want to learn.
Idk, I liked him. Most people in my class didn't. It's a hard class! But if you study rigorously, go to the exam reviews and REALLY try to understand the material you'll be fine. Try to find a study strategy that works for you. Not everything works for everyone. I passed with a C. It was a close B though!
Wischusen is a very good teacher and gives everything you need to pass. Study his pre-lecture videos, mastering biology quizzes, and notes and you'll get an easy A. It is a clicker course so attendance is mandatory, but he gives test questions in class so I recommend going. He is very passionate about this course and I enjoyed his class.
Tough teacher, but I loved him. He gives clicker questions every single day, so I recommend going to class. Also, the Mastering Biology online quizzes and practice tests will save your grade. As for tests, he isn't a "definitions" type of guy. You have to truly understand the material which can be difficult. The second test is the hardest one!
Literally the hardest class ever, Take anyone else. Not kidding. He will either get you your first W or you wont have a social life.
Wischusen is a great teacher. There's a lot of material to cover in a short amount of time. If you're confused, he has a lot of office hours and is extremely helpful. I went back and listened to the pre-lecture videos multiple times to get a good understanding.
He seemed passionate about what he lectured about. I thought I'd understand it in class because I got the clicker questions but then the test wouldn't be even remotely similar. He says he doesn't ask trick questions but it seems like all the questions on his tests are trick questions. Homework, online quizzes and clicker questions saved my grade.
I loved Wischusen's class. He doesn't give the easiest tests but they aren't the hardest either. Just go to class and take good notes. He posts lecture videos on Moodle too. Those are really helpful. His tests are all about application. Don't try to just memorize the material and expect an A. You gotta really try to understand everything he teaches
I loved learning in this class, but the material did require a lot of studying. You HAVE to go to every class and participate. He takes participation credit every day. Also, you can always ask questions!! ASK ASK ASK!! The class is HUGE and DIFFICULT because it's a 'weed-out' class. 'Weed-out' meaning that the class will start off with about 700.
Dr. Wischusen was a really great professor. He makes the material really interesting and his really funny in his own way. He is very helpful in his office hours. Definitely go to class, the clicker questions are similar to those on the exams. Overall he is my favorite professor that I've taken so far at LSU.
He is very knowledgeable in the subject matter so he can answer any questions you have. He is not very polite or nice in his office hours but he will help you despite the rudeness. He gives clicker questions every class that count for a good portion of the grade so attendance is pretty necessary. Tests are hard!
This class is TA taught so you won't ever meet Wischusen. This review is for Shraddha Shrestha. I loved her! She is so nice and an easy grader. If you get to pick your TA take her. The class was easy if you get a good group. I am very bad at biology but I got a B without trying. Make sure you go to class for the quizzes because they add up.
Good teacher, but test are extremely tricky. Do mastering BIO stuff.
Dr. Bill is an amazing professor. Highly recommend him for bio majors. Tests are tough, but clicker bonus helps a little at the end. Overall great guy, and is very helpful in office hours.
I wasn't a big fan of the class size. It's so big that you don't really get to know Wischusen or your classmates. Also, office hours are treacherous because there are so many people attending. Also, I hate mastering biology with all of my heart.
Lovelovelove his class! He is really passionate about what he does and it shows. Tests aren't the easiest because he wants you to be able to apply what you've learned, but I believe that he gives you what you need in order to succeed. He's also pretty funny as well.
The test are extremely hard. To be successful in this class you must go above and beyond. If biology isn't your strength, take anyone else! His class is not easy! As a professor, he is amazing. However, the class size makes it impossible to concentrate and his office hours are not realistic when you need help because of all the other students.
Dr. Bill is a pretty cool dude. His lectures are interesting, but they don't necessarily cover all of the information that will be on the exams. His exams are pretty tricky and it can be difficult to get even a B on them, but he is nice and willing to help in his office hours.
The first test is easy, which makes people think they can blow off the rest of the tests, but they get harder! Dr. Bill tends to skip around A LOT. If you're not in class or not paying attention, things can get confusing pretty quickly. Easy to pass if you watch the pre-lec videos, but can be boring if you're not into Biology. Overall not too bad.
Wischusen is a great professor who really understands what he's talking about. You have to go to class because he does clicker questions every day, and it's an easy way to accumulate points. Tests are very tough, you have to really understand the material and be able to apply it. Make sure to do all mastering biology assignments and study hard!
Dr. Wischusen's lectures are informational, but what will really saves your grade is watching his pre-lecture videos on Moodle. When it comes time for the test, study lecture notes, pre-lecture video notes, and mastering biology quizzes/pre-tests and you will do fine. At least 4 clicker questions daily for attendance points, so go to class.
If you like Biology, Wischusen is your guy. If you put in effort and do all the homework, clicker questions, and show up to class you will get a good grade. It seems like a lot of work (which it is), but all the mastering biology homework and practice tests are on quizlet. The second test is the hardest, the rest are ok if you put in effort.
Dr. Bill is a very tough grader. Do NOT take his class and expect it to be an easy A. By mid-October, roughly 250 of the original +800 students in my class dropped. If you take his class, be prepared to work hard for a passing grade. Resources will be made available to you, and those who fail are the one's unwilling to work.
Took Dr. Bill expecting to do well in Biology, but that didn't turn out well. He explains things well in class but you HAVE TO STUDY. If you don't then you won't pass. Tests are taken in the testing center and they mostly come from mastering biology, but also take a look at the questions at the back of the chapter the test is on. Those help!
Super good teacher but he is like the satan of test givers. Expect to cry yourself to sleep after studying for his class at 3 am. Also dont be afraid to pick up a habit like smoking, vaping, or other drugs.
went to every class and paid attention never watched a prelecture video never went to a review or SI session studied mastering biology, the textbook, and notes for the tests made an A
Went to every class and sat in front. Go to class. You'll benefit from clicker questions. Those will be super helpful to write down and study before test. Tests are kinda hard. Read the textbook. Don't expect to study just off lectures. He's a little all over. Watch pre-lec videos. Overall, good teacher. Very funny and enthusiastic.
He does a good job of giving useful examples in class so you can remember the concept. Homework was assigned for every class but it was nothing too hard. His tests were pretty tough and not because the material was hard but more so because of how he words the questions. Overall, I would take him again for sure!
He's a very good professor who knows what he is talking about. He makes time for his students and has office hours to accommodate everyone. If you know how to study, it's an easy A. His tests are tough because of how he words them. His homework and clicker questions will save your grade. He assigns lots of reading, but I never read. It's not needed
Wischusen is a great teacher and knows what he is talking about, BUT the course content is difficult. Studying is a must unless you have a really good biology background or just a super genius I guess. Pre-Lecture videos are very helpful, especially when you watch them before the lecture. Tests are difficult but not impossible. Also, Go to Class!
Have to go to class or you'll miss important notes. Don't miss clicker questions! Hard tests.
Bill's a great teacher. He is very clear in the lectures, but you will have a homework assignment due before every class. The tests aren't terrible, but you will have to study. They are also weighted pretty high so, again, study. The test on cellular respiration is the hardest so don't get scared after. Overall, I would definitely recommend.
Wischusen is a great professor that I would recommend to anyone! However, you will definitely have to work for your grade. Do not expect to come in here, study for one night, and ace all of your tests. You cannot memorize the material and expect to get an A. You MUST know and understand everything in this class.
His classes sucked. Give you clicker to someone, and get the clicker questions from someone. Watch the videos and you will at least get a B. Best thing to do with the homework is do it on Sundays so its all out the way, and the answers are online. The first couple test are hard, but it gets easier really.
For all the ones saying how interesting the class was and how easy the test were are the ones who sat in the first three rows and went to every single office hour available. If you are not prepared to study every single night, you will not pass if you are a normal student.
He's great!
He was a tough tester. However, the class is actually very interesting. I genuinely liked this class, even though I had to work for the grade. Be prepared for lots of Mastering Biology homework due every class day (though it's really not difficult at all). I learned a lot and would definitely take him again . (PS. clicker questions every day.)
Dr. Bill obviously cares about his students and will do anything to help you succeed. Those who don't succeed are the ones that didn't understand and then never approached him for help. If you don't cheat on the homework, you will do a lot better on the tests. Dr. Bill is a fantastic teacher and is the best to take for BIOL 1201. Take him!
Take notes along with the pre-lecture videos and then add in details during lecture. Write out the learning materials and make sure you know the material well enough to explain it to someone else. Do the questions in "dynamic learning modules" which can be found in mastering bio. The tests are not bad if you truly know the material. Good luck!
Dr. Bill was my favorite teacher this semester! He explains things clearly and takes his time with important concepts. Super helpful during office hours, and all around great guy. Watch out for mastering biology! It brought my grade down by 3 points. No curves, but the final isn't bad. Go to class+Study+homeworkSUCCESS :)
VERY awesome professor, and his lectures are really good! Expect clicker questions EVERY class so attendance is mandatory! However, he is NOT easy, his test are very tricky, but he is testing if you understand the material so that you may apply it. You cannot expect to memorize notes and pass. WATCH ONLINE VIDEOS AND DO HOMEWORK! Very helpful
The tests are definitely tricky, study everyday!!! Final wasn't that bad. Homework/Mastering Biology is due before every class period which is kind of annoying but you can find all the answers online. Attendance isn't mandatory but he does clicker questions every class periods which counts as points.
This is a massive class (nearly 1000 students) so his lectures are long and boring. Material is clear but you really have to pay attention. Test are hard but a few days of studying and you'll do just fine.
Take Dr. Bill's class seriously. Go to class for the clicker points and be diligent about Mastering Biology. Subject material was interesting, his online videos are great, and he's an interesting guy! Tests are challenging, study in advance and go to review sessions. Second exam was the hardest. Sit in the front of class to stay focused!
Dr. Wischusen is amazing. It's a very large class ( 1000), so sit towards the front! He's a great lecturer. You have to go to class because he does clicker questions for participation. Expect daily homework. His tests are very tricky, but as long as you know the pre-lecture videos and Mastering Biology backwards and forwards, you'll be golden!
His class is at 8:30am but as far as Biology Professors go he's your best choice for this class. His lectures are helpful and attendance counts so you have to go to class. His tests are pretty easy if you study the material and read through the textbook. Bill's the best!!!
-He wants you to learn the material, not just recite definitions. Prepare to become very familiar with the subject. -Make sure you show up for class or else you'll miss the daily clicker questions. -Final exam is about the same difficulty as the exams, but includes a cumulative portion which isn't too difficult. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
Wonderful professor, by far one of my favorites at LSU! Although I was happy as ever to be done with 1201 I would most definitely take him again but would put in 110% MORE EFFORT. Hard tests but very doable. All around amazing!!!
Great lectures and very easy to understand. DO YOUR HOMEWORK! His tests are tricky but get easier as you figure out how to study. The book really helped with my understanding but don't pay full price (got mine from chegg for $30). Overall a great class that I would recommend for any science major.
Uses class time efficiently, go and you'll know what to study, plus you need your clicker daily. Great teacher (really makes you think deep) and very clear, but if you don't know your stuff you won't do well on the tests. You get out PRECISELY what you put in, & no extra credit. My grade took a BIG hit bc I would forget Mastering Biology quizzes.
Dr. Bill is a great teacher. Go to class and do the clickers, they help your grade. Also, do the homework it's easy points. His tests require you to really understand the material. he will not ask basic questions, he asks questions that you will get only if you fully understand the material backwards and forwards. Study.
Do the MB quizzes! They help your grade a LOT. Sadly, tests require critical thinking not just memorization. The final was easier than the other exams.
He's a great instructor and will answer any questions you may have. Makes great light of things that scare people away like cellular respiration and cell signaling, HOWEVER, if you expect to not attend class and are in college for fun and not for a purpose, you'll be one of the 400 that are going to drop the class after the first test.
He's amazing and has a passion for biology, unlike some teachers who just show up and do the bare minimum. If you want to pass watch his pre-lecture videos before class and do your homework (the videos help with the topic that will be covered and gives insight on what you don't understand). He will help students if they need it. I'd take him again.
His pre-lecture videos were basically the same as the lecture in class. His test were hard and confusing even with all the hours of studying. Siebenaller explains the biology course more in depth.
I took Wischusen for 1201 and am a biology major. The tests are insanely hard, and if you don't know what to study for, you will be completely lost. He words questions in a very confusing way and his lectures are long. Lots of clicker questions that can boost your grade, but if you don't go to class, your grade will be affected.
Bill knows his stuff and he expects you to know it too. His tests are very challenging, but he will answer any questions you have. Do your homework and go to class, and you'll do fine. Just don't expect him to round your grade from an 89.7 to a 90 (I'm still bitter).
He loves Biology and really knows what he's talking about. He's very passionate about the subject. His tests aren't the easiest you really have to understand the material inside and out. I learned a lot in this class, but you have to put in effort to do well.
Dr. Wischusen's class is not easy, he makes you work for it, but you reap the benefits later! Go to every class because there are clicker question that can save your grade. Tests are tough but if you study and go to the SI sessions you should be in good shape. Don't be afraid to ask for help!
He's very knowledgeable and is very passionate about Biology. I looked forward to going to each class! Tests are a bit tricky-- they require you to apply the information, but I'm sure it will pay off in the long run. The main thing I disliked about the class was the size, which made him almost inaccessible-- especially after tests.
Wishchusen is a really cool professor, he makes you want to learn the material. He's like your fun grandpa that makes you study.
Very cute and knowledgeable professor. Take his class if you're a bio major who's prepared to work your ass off for an A and reap the benefits of a good BIOL background. This guy is the reason I changed my major to English. Very tough tests.
He's a great teacher. He posts pre-lectures to help you understand the lecture, but you can understand it without it. His clicker questions help understand the info. He's always willing to answer your questions. He's very energetic about the info and knows what he's talking about. The textbook was unnecessary, MasteringBiology is all you need.
If you are a biology major, and it's YOUR passion, then he's the man for you. He's very tricky with his questions.
Dr. Wischusen is one of the tougher Biology teachers but he definitely knows what he's talking about. His test are normally short (30-40 questions) but very tricky and specific. I recommend going to class even though he post the lectures on moodle because he gives daily clicker points and does helpful presentations sometimes. Be prepared to study!!
This is the class that was the deciding factor in me changing my major. Information is not necessarily boring or even that difficult, but his test are near impossible. I could recite my notes and textbook and still failed every test. Had to drop the course and take a W. Affected all my other classes because so much time had to be dedicated to this.
After copying note slides for 3 hours in biol 1001, Dr. Bill's 1002 class was a great change of pace. Less memorization, more explanation. The best feature to his class was the flexible exam policy: Myself and others were able to convince him that our answers were just as good as his ambiguously worded one, gaining 10% credit in the process.
I have had Dr. Bill for two classes, and in both his lectures were clear and interesting. He takes attendance by clicker questions, and often the clicker questions are also on the test. He seems to genuinely care about his students' success and is very approachable. There is online homework. Overall a good professor.
Good ol' Bill
Tests are hard. The way he words questions is very confusing. He cares about his students though.
He really knows his information. Tests can be a little tricky but a lot of the questions come from mastering biology and clicker questions. He records his lectures but i wouldn't recommend skipping his class.
Although 1201 is a hard class, he really does make an effort to help you learn. He also emails you individually after every test congratulating you for doing well or motivating you to do better. Overall a very nice guy. Must go to class and do mastering biology. Videos are also life savers.
There's a reason Dr. Wischusen's class always has 700+ people enrolled. He makes learning biology very fun and interesting! His tests may be a little tricky, but he's VERY good about making sure you understand the material. Make sure you do MasteringBiology (which is NOT just for completion, as I found out), and study a few days ahead for exams.
Although his tests can be difficult, he truly cares about his students. He wants you to do well. Takes a lot of studying though.
Dr. Bill is one of the best professors at LSU. He's a fantastic teacher and knows what he's talking about. His tests are difficult, but if you put in the time to learn the information, you will do well, but it's definitely NOT a memorization class. He honestly the reason I like biology now.
It's a weed out class for wannabe Bio majors.
I loved Dr. Wischusen's class. He is a dynamic lecturer and explains biological concepts very well. Attendance is mandatory because of clicker questions. Many of the test questions are similar to the clicker questions as well. If you watch the pre-lecture videos, do the homework, stay up on the material, and study, you will succeed in this class.
Wischusen is a good guy, he wants you to do well, but his tests are honestly overkill. He tends to test on very specific and tiny pieces of information that you usually wouldnt put effort in to study. The tests cover so much material it is hard to be able to prepare. But, he does give good prelectures, and 3 non-test categories for grading.
I am required to take this class for my major, and I honestly thought it would be my least favorite class of the semester. I ended up loving this course! Dr. Bill is such a funny, caring professor. He does give online quizzes every day and a practice test once a week. His exams can be difficult. I would definitely recommend taking Dr. Bill!
Personally, I HATE biology. I think it is super hard and boring and I just really hate it. I was so fortunate to have Dr. Bill as my professor though because he broke everything down and made it a more enjoyable experience. The tests are very hard if you don't know what's going on so you have to go to class AND WATCH PRE LECTURE VIDS.
He has clicker questions every class and posts pre lecture videos. Information is not difficult but tests are, I studied hard but still got Ds on almost all of them.
This was a great class and I learned a lot! There is so much information thrown at you, so I recommend trying to pace your studying slightly ahead of the lectures so you won't get behind. If you do all your assigned readings, watch the pre-lecture videos, take notes in class, and study a few hours a week outside of lecture you should get an A
This class is such a struggle- studied notes from the textbook, in class notes, Mastering Biology notes, and clicker questions, and notes from previous years. Tests were still hard. Went to test review sessions constantly, still struggled. Very tricky questions. You REALLY have to understand this stuff. Dropped the class because it was so brutal
There are clicker questions almost every class which he uses to take attendance but he drops the lowest 4. He posts prelecture videos on moodle which are life savers (I never paid attention in class and this covers most of the important material). MAKE SURE YOU TAKE YOUR ONLINE QUIZES AND PRACTICE EXAMS! They can really help or hurt your grade
He was the first professor I met my freshman year and he is a blessing. The class is a bit challenging and you have to study a good bit for the exams but he honestly wants you to pass. He makes class entertaining and has a lot of clicker questions. Dr. Bill is very set on the grading scale and will not boost your grade up. He won't curve all exams.
He is enthusiastic about what he's teaching. It's a lot of mastering bio homework assignments but that helps your grade a lot. As long as you rework those assignments before the exams you'll done fine.
I loved him! As long as you watch the pre-lecture videos assigned for the class that day, do your online quizzes (that are easy), and pay attention in class, you will make an A. His tests are mainly all application, you can't just memorize information, you have to KNOW it. I would definitely recommend him and would take him again!
he's a nice guy but this was definitely a weed out class.
Gives tons of Mastering Biology homework, but his lectures are extremely clear and helpful. Attendance is recorded every class with clicker questions. He offers many resources such as his pre lecture videos so if you don't pass it's your fault. A lot of the test questions resemble homework and clicker questions.
awesome professor and really made the transition from high school to college easy. His passion for biology shows through his lectures & really helps students grasp material. He posts his lectures on videos online, but goes way more in depth in class. You really have to work for your grade, but he is willing to help you with any problems you have.
Dr. Bill is so cool. Nice dude & knows his stuff. He takes clicker attendance, but you can miss 4 classes for the semester without penalty. Mastering biology stuff is required but helps your grade. Test are hard but not impossible if you study & go to the review sessions. He leads them himself & tells you everything on the test. Take him!
Wischusen was nice and his lectures were alright. But his tests were impossible. Classmates I spoke to who went to the SI sessions said they were no help. It felt like the harder I studied the worse I did. He actually admitted to making his test questions tricky on purpose.
I love Dr. Wischusen (Bill). He's a cool guy. Make sure you pay attention in class and actually understand what he's saying instead of trying to memorize all the information. You won't get a good grade in his class trying to memorize. If you can't understand, ask a friend who's doing well in his class. I didn't find SI all that helpful either.
I was in the first honors bio 2 class he taught, it was pretty easy. His tests are mostly short answer/ fill in the blank, but they are on -exactly- what he lectures about. Not a harsh grade tester, gives generous partial credit. 2 HW a week but v short, No note template/ powerpoints are given online, but arent hard to type during his lecture.
Excellent Professor. Tests questions can be unnecessarily tricky at times. Put some time in and you'll do well
if you want a prof that is easy to understand without pre lecture videos and reading ahead this is not the one for you
Great professor. I loved him so much in 1201 that I took him again for honors 1503. He has a great lecture that gets the point across, which is hard to do in a 1000 person class. Will answer questions if you have them. You do have to put in the effort and actually apply yourself rather than simply memorizing the materials
very cool guy, good teacher, but hardest class I took freshman year. sometimes feels as if test are difficult for the sake of being difficult
amazing professor! tests are doable if you put in the work; a lot of tricky questions on them. watch the pre lecture videos!!
He is a professor that you can tell cares about his students and his responsibility as a teacher. He is well known and well respected. As long as you attend class, do the homework, and watch his pre-lectures, it won't be bad at all.
Multiple pre-lecture videos per week, assigned textbook readings, and mastering biology quizzes/practice tests. Lectures were basically just going over clicker questions which I didn't find very helpful. Very hard tests, but not impossible if you study.
Dr. Bill is a really cool guy and great professor. Tests are definitely a little difficult but manageable. I skipped class a bunch and crammed the night before tests and usually managed to do okay. Pre lecture videos are a life saver and online quiz answers are all over quizlet so those are easy A's that boost your grade. not an easy A but not hard
I just recently took him and if there is one thing to know is that his tests are made to trick you. The first test is easy, the rest are hard. He makes the questions so that you second guess yourself so the tests are super tricky and its hard to predict what he will ask on them because of that. HOMEWORKS and quizzes are a must A.
Do yourself a favor and take Dr. Wischusen! His lectures are exceptional. If you work hard, you can get an A in this class! Don't be intimidated by his run along office hours: they are an extremely helpful way to get extra help and stay in shape! My advice would be to attend class, watch the pre-lecture videos, and skim the chapters before class.
Wischusen wasn't a bad teacher but definitely makes you work and study for your grade. If you take him take the time to read through all the homework and be somewhat familiar with the information before the lecture for each class, that will do you wonders!
That man Bill. Participation is very important in this class and he does give participation points through Learning Catalytic. Overall, he gives you everything you need to be successful in the class. The tests are pretty difficult but if you watch the Pre-Lecture videos and review the L.C., you'll be golden.
Explains the material well and does learning catalytic so lectures are mandatory. Lot of homework. quiz due the night b4 each class and a practice test each week, but it does not take long and u can find answers on quizlet. Test are not bad but you actually have to study and know the info. Way easier than most professors. will not round grade up.
Okay, Bill is a great professor. He makes biology interesting and he's good at explaining. Student have to put effort outside class. However, getting the material is not enough for this class. You have to be prepared for all the tricky question he asks you during tests. He does not have a very forgiving grading system. No bonus points.
You should really pay attention in lectures. Take plenty of notes as well every class. The tests cover a lot of information, and you should start studying about 2 weeks in advance. Very difficult and mostly known as a weed out class, but overall good teacher.
Dr. Bill is the best! Makes tough concepts very simple & explanations are always very clear. I sat in the front, so I found him to be very engaging, which is no easy task in a 700 person lecture. Great prof for your first semester!! Very nice guy, very accessible. 10/10 would recommend taking his class if you can!!!!!
Dr. Bill is a great professor. Be really cares about his students. Outlines everything important and tells you what will be on his tests. Tests are tricky but if you pay attention in class and take good notes then you should be able to walk out of this class with an A.
Dr. Bill is a good professor if he is more accessible due to the massive class size. Know that this class is very lecture oriented and takes effort outside of class in order to do well. I find the exam to be tricky due to the intricate detail and it can be agitating if you don't listen well enough in pre lecture video or lecture.
Exams are extremely difficult. Tried to see him during office hours; he didn't give much help on how to do better. Mastering Biology homeworks help your grade, but the practice tests and quizzes aren't practice for the much more difficult exams. Final is 70% new material and 30% cumulative so it was hard to know what to study, but easier than exams
I enjoyed the class, but it definitely is not an easy A. The tests are pretty difficult and the questions are often worded to confuse you. However, he is ready and willing to help you in and outside of class. The test questions are usually similar to the learning catalytics questions, so review those before the test.
He gives many opportunities for grades. He has a lot of online quizzes in addition to the tests he gives
Watch the pre lectures, take notes, do your mastering biology assignments and you'll be golden. The exams are a little difficult, but the other assignments should make up for it. Go to his run-along office hours! He's an amazing professor that actually cares about his students and he's always willing to help you. Would definetly recommend!!
BEST PROFESSOR EVER
Make sure to look at pre-lec videos at some point, and get homework done. Take advantage of all the ways to get points (hw, Learning catalytics). His tests are detailed and have indirect questions. Make sure to also look at hw & learning cat. before tests, as he uses some of that on there. Final was easier than most tests but I studied a ton.
Literal best professor of life. He expects a lot of you, but he makes all information available to you with the majority of each lecture posted online and has the entire semester laid out for you before classes start. The setup of his class makes it super easy to follow, despite the material being a bit challenging. I love Bill Wishcusen so much
Dr. Bill was an amazing teacher to have my first semester. He was a tough teacher but was respected and he cared for his students. I could never make the TA sessions but I recommend going to every exam review he holds before tests. Take notes on the pre-lecture videos because it is basically his lecture material and then go to class and add notes.
As a freshman not knowing how to study in college, his tests were extremely different. You really need to be prepared to put a lot of time into studying to do well, but he does prepare you for tests well if you put in the amount of time studying. He is a very nice, chill guy and really cares for his students.
For this class make sure you watch his pre-lecture videos because in class he doesn't go into detail or explain many concepts. Class mostly consists of learning catalytics questions that test you to see if you read and watched the videos. Test questions are pretty tricky, you need to know the concepts forwards and backwards.
I took Biol 1201 with Wischusen, and loved him so much I took him for Honors Biol 1503. Would recommend this class to biology majors, very good teacher. Gives prelecture videos to watch before every lecture so you learn the material before you even go to class. Wish I could take him again. Highly recommend for both courses
Might I start by saying, William Wischusen stole my heart. I love him for his witty humor and interesting lectures. Although his tests were challenging, the person that he is made me love the class <<<<<333333 make sure to watch prelecs
Dr. Wischusen is an awesome professor. His lectures are really interesting and he breaks down how all the material is related which helped me for tests. His tests are difficult but if you go to class and watch prelecture videos and study youll be fine. I took him for bio 1201 and 1503 and really recommend him for both.
I enjoyed 1201 with Dr. Bill so much I took bio 2 as honors! an easy honors course (if you found 1201 to be easy). Bio 2 is a boring subject tbh, but Dr. Bill really makes an effort to relate these boring concepts to things that science majors find more interesting. If you liked him for 1201 & are on the fence ab 1503, take it! be ready to work tho
Definitely a hard class for incoming freshmen. Dr. Bill gives so much information it can be hard to keep track of. Doing all the homework, quizzes, pre/post lecture videos , and going to the study sessions is time consuming but does help. You can get a good grade but its an incredible amount of work, though it does prepare you for Biology II.
Bill's class was definitely manageable. A lot of homework, and you have to go to class. If you can put in the work, it is definitely possible to make an A.
He's a nice guy but does not review in class in preparation for tests. I read my textbook before every single test and have never gotten above a B. Many of the test questions are from homework quizzes. The class is a lot of studying and work but it is doable.
I really enjoyed his class and I thought he was a great professor. The pre-lecture videos are extremely helpful! Would absolutely take this class again
He is a good teacher with good lectures but tests are very hard with many application problems. If you have to miss class you will fall behind very quickly. Will not take him again.
Wischusen is the best prof for Biology 1 for Sci majors. His lectures are amazing and his tests are 30-40 multiple choice questions. He really makes bio 1 easy if you come to class. His pre-lecture videos are a gem when studying for exams. Mastering biology weekly quizzes and practice tests are all on quizlet also so easy A there.
Dr. Bill is honestly a good professor, just a little dry. His pre-lecture videos are extremely helpful, I recommend taking notes while you watch them so you can retain information for the next class. Study the notes from the pre-lecture videos, the learning catalytics, and mastering biology to get good grades. Textbook is there for reference.
At 1st, Bill seemed fun. After all, he was spunky and long like a noodle. But really this class made me hate biology. The long lectures & unorganized powerpoints w/ occasional grammatical mistakes (its vs. it's, effect vs. affect) made even topics that personally interested me boring. The homework was kinda irrelevant & the tests were lowkey RIDIC!
If you're majoring in something like bio you have to have a good basic foundation for the rest of college. I feel like he could make his tests a little easier. If you do not want to work and study almost every night for your grade then this class is a fat no for you. I missed around 2-3 classes and that set me back.
Wischusen is an awesome professor, especially if you will be taking more upper level biology courses. It is very possible to get an A in his class if you're willing to put in work. You can't go to class and expect to walk out completely understanding biology. It takes time and practice.
Dr. Wischusen is an amazing choice for an intro-level bio professor. He's very knowledgeable about the material he teaches and he has an "oomph" and enthusiasm in lectures that easily draws your attention. The exams aren't hard so as long as you have a fair understanding of the test material you're set for an A.
Dr. Bill is an amazing proffesor. I truly enjoyed his class, and I like the way he organizes the material. He is very clear and very thorough. There are assigned prelects that are extremely helpful. There are participation quizzes in class that I literally got a 114% on. Hes a solid choice and I would absolutely recommend him. Wish he taught 1202!
Dr. Wischusen is an amazing professor to take for beginning biology. He is passionate and knowledgeable about biology which makes his lectures interesting. He gives 4 exams about 30-40 questions each and a final. The online quizzes and pre-lectures are really helpful for the exams. I took him for bio 1201 and would recommend taking him.
Dr. Bill is a great professor. He is super organized and provides lots of resources for you to learn the material. A majority of the learning has to be done on your own. It helps to learn material before going to class so that his lectures make sense. He gives online quizzes and practice tests every week as well as in-class participation credit.
He is an amazing teacher and offers test review sessions before every test but the tests are extremely hard. Be prepared to not only know the information but also apply it in every way.
This class is an easy A. The grade you get depends on the work you put in. Watch the pre-lectures videos, go to class, do the Learning Catalytics, and do all online homework/quizzes. I did not use the book once nor go to a SI session, and I still managed to get an A+. Also, the tests are taken in Himes on computers.
The pre-lecture videos are a life saver and really help you grasp the material better. Before the test I would suggest redoing all of the mastering biology quizzes and looking over learning catalytic questions since they are closest to the questions on the test.
Dr. Bill is the best! I've taken him for 1201 and 1503. His tests are manageable, he doesn't assign too much homework, and his lectures are very engaging. I can't imagine taking bio with any other professor for my first two semesters. We occasionally use the textbook, but the class isn't dependent on it. He grades fairly and is very nice.
This was my first class coming into college and sitting with 700+ students around you is quite overwhelming. This is your typical weed out course so the test are meant to trick you and he will even let you know that. You will either love him or hate him but he is not a bad guy. I wish I would have taken Crousillac's class instead though.
His tests are super hard!!!!!! The pre lecture videos really help but actually watch them before class. Its hard to pay attention in class because of how big the class is but it really helps if you do pay attention.
He is a great teacher and gives great lectures. He explains the material well
I took this class and it was the class that I was most scared of coming into college! It turned out to be my favorite. Dr. Bill gives you every opportunity to succeed AS LONG AS YOU UTILIZE THEM! You will not get an A if you dont study, but you will do great if you watch pre-lecture videos and put forth the effort before tests.
I took Dr. Wishcusen for both BIOL 1201 and BIOL 1503 and he was fantastic! He works really hard to give you multiple platforms for understanding. His lectures were very important for 1503, less important for 1201. His prelecture videos are very useful, and so is the online program he uses for quizzes.
I took him for BIOL 1201 and found his tests EXTREMELY HARD! I watched every pre-lecture video, took good notes, and read the textbook & would study for a week but still found him very hard. His teaching style just didn't mesh w/ my learning style. I thought he was impossible, recommend taking someone different! There was no extra credit either.
Great professor but the tests are HARD. If you plan on succeeding you need to start studying way ahead of time and definitely watch all prefecture videos and read the book. With that being said, he is very accessible and is more than willing to answer any questions you may have, even if you just stop him while walking around campus.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! the exams are near impossible and usually on random chapters. i studied practice tests, pre-lecture videos, took notes, studied, all that; and not a single one of the tests have made sense.
He is a great professor. He gives you pre-lecture videos to watch which are extremely helpful for going back and understanding things. He explains things really well and gives diagrams to help visualize what is happening. His tests (he curves almost all of them) are very straight forward and he doesn't test you on things you have never seen before.
Very talented teacher. Lots of work outside of class and assignments are due at 8:00 a.m. for some reason.
Online Quizes before every due before every class. Practice tests due every Monday before class. Packback questions due before every Monday class. Learning Catalytics every class. If you do all of these and do well on tests, you will get a good grade in his class. It may sound like a lot, but it is manageable.
He really is a good teacher. First 3/4 of the year i didn't go to class and it really makes test very hard. They are very specific and if you don't use all your resources like the pre lecture videos and going to class, you'll struggle especially if you have only taken one year of bio before. Go to class even though you can do clicker from home
Good teacher, but tests are very specific and HARD. Need to know the information backwards and forwards and how to apply it. Homework due before every class. Definitely go to class, all tutoring sessions, and watch the pre-lecture videos.
Dr Wischusen definitely knows what he is talking about, but his class is HARD. His tests always have tricky questions so you have to really know the material and the concepts!! watching the pre-lecture videos and skimming the assigned chapters before class (which is suggested but not mandatory) helps a lot!!
Dr. Wischusen is a really good professor and guy. Every day he greets all 400 or so of his students at the entrance which is really welcoming. However, this class can be really difficult if you don't pay attention or do the homework/quiz assignments. Tests are pretty difficult but there are a lot of easy homework points to balance it out.
Wischusen is the best! you have prelecture videos on moodle so going to class isnt necessary but you do have questions in class for participation(can easily do those in your bed at home). homework is quizzes on mastering bio(answers on kahoot), 4 tests and a final, just rewatch videos and youll do fine!! SI and review sessions were helpful.
Hes great! watch the videos, go to class, do the homework, review and youll do great! i never used the textbook, looked up answers to homework. review sessions very helpful and the quizzes/practice tests are very similar to test questions. questions from class are VERY similar to test. this class will teach you what studying ahead of time means.
Dr. Wischusen was honestly one of the best professors I have ever had. Wischusen showed that he cared about the course as well as the students he taught. If you want to succeed in this class use the resources he gives you, aka pre-lecture videos, learning catalytics, and learning objectives. If you do this you will pass!
Dr. Wischusen is SUCH a great professor. How you will do is based also on the work you put in. Make sure to watch and take notes on the prelecture videos, they help a lot! He is always available in his office hours for advice on how to succeed in the class and he answers any questions you have, in general. LOVED this class!
Dr. Wischusen's exams are very specific and require more than just memorizing vocab and concepts. You actually have to understand and be able to apply your knowledge to do well on his exams. Dr. Wischusen is also a great professor who really knows what he's doing so if you ever need help, ask!
Dr. Bill is a great professor and cares a lot about his students. Watching the pre-lecture videos is the key to passing his class, and if you know the information you will do well on the tests. Keep up with the MasteringBiology, Packback, and Learning Catalytics because all of these points really matter in the end. I would take his class again!
His lectures are not hard to follow. He does in class participation, so I would say that you should attend class. He posts pre-lecture videos that are so helpful. My best advice for the exams are to study the learning catalytics questions, practice tests on mastering biology, and go over lecture notes!
Took AP Bio which definitely helped a lot, but even without it it can be an easy / manageable class if you have good study habits. Really great professor / lecturer, I chose to take him again for honors BIOL 1503!
Dr. Bill was super lecture heavy and expected you to listen to a lot of videos outside of class. Overall, he wasn't a bad teacher, but didn't really do much to help his students out. It seemed like he was there just to teach, and as if he didn't really care if his students did well or not.
His tests are nothing like his lectures. He spends all class talking about random stuff which will never be seen again. Homework is graded on how many you get correct and isn't easy. to get attendance credit you have to answer questions throughout the class and if you don't get the answers right you don't get your points even being in class.
Best professor I've had at LSU. He makes lectures interesting and throws some jokes in to keep people attentive. If you need help go to his office and he will help you. Watch and take notes on his pre lecture videos. Study the learning catalytics questions and quizzes and you'll do fine on the exams. Don't be lazy and you'll finish with an A.
One of my most favorite teachers! I took this class for biology 1201 and loved his teaching so much I took him for biology 1503. He assigns weekly homework assignments and you must attend class to get lecture participation points. He grades fair and provides enough room for fixing your GPA. Easy to understand but likes to pace while teaching.
I took Dr. Wischusen for both 1201 and 1503, and he is by far the best professor at LSU for intro level biology! He cares for his students and is very straight forward with his tests. Tests are based off of lecture and similar to learning catalytics questions. However, for 1503 be warned about the cure lab. I worked harder for lab than any course.
Loved his class. Watching the prelectures helped out a lot. I would recommend watching the videos again to study for the exams too. He cares about his students and wants to see you succeed. All the information is there to do well if you study.
Dr. Wischusen still is my favorite teacher from freshman year. Make sure to do all the quizzes (answers are all online btw) and packback. I found going through the practice exams helpful. The lab, on the other hand, was a nightmare. Our quizzes were ridiculously specific.
Dr. Bill was an great professor. Took his class online with zoom calls. Always watch his pre lecture videos and take notes on them before class. Attend to and pay attention to his lectures. There were tests every Monday for us; only about 10 questions each. Get all easy points like packback and homework. Review sessions Sunday. no textbook needed.
He is a responsible professor and explains concepts clearly and in-depth. The review sessions are helpful and he makes attempts to help the students to do their best. The course is not easy if you're taking it the first time but I would recommend it for those who major in bio or premed.
Super lecture heavy. Attendance credit -- you have to answer questions throughout the class, and if you don't get the answers right, you don't get your points even being in class. He isn't a bad teacher but kept insisting I take a W for his class rather than trying to help me learn the material. Exams were very difficult.
He's awesome! He's very clear about exactly what you should study for on each test. He creates study guides with all the material you need to know, and that's all I use to study. The tests are very straightforward, no trick questions. Just watch prelecture videos and take good notes and you'll do amazing. I wish he taught 1202.
this class is HARD. nothing on the tests are straightforward. the notes are all unorganized. nothing makes sense. if this was not online this semester, I probably would have failed. the tests are more so conceptual, so you are completely screwed if you just know the basics.
Love this man! Gives pre-lecture videos before each class and follows that for the following class. Gives learning objectives for each test so you know exactly what to study and know for the tests. If you take notes and pay attention during class you should be fine. He really is a great professor and cares for his students. Also not alot of hw
Dr. Bill is a great teacher, posts pre-lecture videos every night before class that are lowkey more helpful than the lectures. He posts learning objectives before every exam that tell you specifically what to study.
Dr. Bill is a wonderful professor. You will work for your grade. He is clear about what he wants from his students. My grade is due to my poor study skills during my first semester of college. But looking back if you go to SI, take lecture notes, study the textbook, you are golden. He cares about his students. Attending lectures is essential.
Dr. Bill is a great professor and he's a very personable guy. He's very understanding when it comes to assignments, and his tests weren't too difficult. He does post lots of lectures, but I waited until the night before factual exams to watch them and always did good. He does have a good bit of homework, but it's just easy quizzes and packback.
Taking this class as an HSS major was a mistake. It was very demanding and rigorus. If you have to take 1201, choose a different professor. The texbook was almost useless, make sure to take notes on everything in class, watch the prelecture videos, and attend all review or Q&A sessions. If you didn't take hard bio in school, you're screwed.
This class was a great way for me to start off my college experience. Dr. Bill has great lectures and goes out of his way to give his students different ways to succeed (SI sessions, office hours, review sessions, prelectures, etc.) As long as you go to class and are willing to put some work in, you should have no problem doing well.
BIO1201 is extremely hard. This class is definitely a lot of work and will take so much time. IF you are not sure if you want to be a bio major (any doubts at all) do not take this your first semester. Tests are not straightforward AT ALL. I am now a junior and this is the hardest class I've taken to date (took as freshman)
I am awful at biology, however Dr. Bill made this class great just my poor studying made my grade bad. It was still hard, but Dr. Bill truly does want you to understand the topics given and is VERY accommodating with the pandemic, hurricanes and other inclement weather. Pay attention to the lectures and even the learning catalytics, it all helps.
Dr. Bill is an amazing professor. He really cares about you and your performance on tests and participation in class. The class is definitely challenging, but he helps you through it a lot.
Dr. Bill was the sweetest, most understanding, and kind professor I had all semester. I'm so sad he's retiring. We love you Dr. Bill!
Dr. Bill was the best. Was so sad when he announced he was retiring. We love you Dr. Bill!
