SUCH a good teacher and what a hottie!
One of the best instructors ever.
I took Bio 162, 160, 161 from him, he is a wonderful teacher. I really enjoyed all of the classes. He's helpful and tries to make sure everyone understands, he doesn't want to leave anyone behind. Good teacher.
In all my years of school, Dr. Cushwa is my most favorite teacher EVER. I've never had a teacher so clear and so helpful towards students. I HIGHLY recommend this instructor to anyone who wants to learn. Only one problem: I wish he taught all my classes!
He is my favorite professor at the college. He is uber helpful, and nice to look at. He creates a fun environment for all of the classes that I have taken from him. He is a wonderful teacher, he should teach more classes then just sciences!
Willy Cushwa is an awsome professor, I had him for 2 bio classes, and each one was great. he takes time to learn all the names of his students, and explains everything clearly. He says "guys" a lot
One of the best teachers that I have ever had. His class if hard but he gives you more than enough info to be successful, you just have to do the work. Also the hotness factor makes it easy to go to class.
great great GREAT biol teacher. very interested in what he does, exceptional clarity in lectures, and interested in students' competency. tests are ok. if you have to take bio, take it from cushwa. stay away from jim campbell.

All around EXCELLENT! Look no further. You want this instructor. Everyth'g you need to succeed in class is on his website. Anything you don't understand, he'll explain - again! OUTSTANDING!!! Very encouraging. Doesn't get any better than this!!!
He is superb and knowledgeable instructor.Good sense of humor. Highly recommended.
Excellent teacher! Very Helpful. Explains things well.
Great Instructor. Gives you everything you need to do well in his class. The website he has for the class is excellent.
Make sure you attend class a lot of test materil is on lecture and study guides. He is very easy to get ahold of and always is willing to help.
great teacher, very helpful. goes out of his way to make sure you learn. always positive and very easy going. reading study guides very helpful. overall, 5 out of 5.
Great professor to learn from. The class is fast speed and loaded with information. The study guides are helpful and I recommend that everyone does them. Also, I recommend doing the extra credit he offers.
Very involved professor! Works as hard as he hopes his students will. Do your study guides & prepare before class and you'll do well- though the material can be demanding, he lays it all out there, no surprises. He not only loves the subject, he clearly enjoys teaching. Great course, great teacher!
Excellent teacher! Makes learning very fun, provides you with all the resources to do well in a hard class. If you fail or do poorly in this class you have only yourself to blame. He is one teacher I wish could teach all subjects. I will take Cushwa whenever possible.
Great teacher, very clear and thorough in explaining topic, confident in subject and works to help students understand, very affirming teaching style. Don't pass Dr. Cushwa up if you are going to take any of the Biology classes he teaches.
Hey is an awesome teacher with a true passion to help everyone succeed! Information is covered rather quickly so attendance is necessary! But he is one teacher willing to go the extra mile!
Dr. Cushwa was wonderful and a really good teacher. Even though the assignments are not for credit, DO THEM! He calls on EVERYONE in class to answer questions from the assignments--really embarrassing if you don't know the answer! I would completely recommend any classes taught by Dr. Cushwa. Great guy.
He was a great instructor. He really likes to teach and he cares. You need to study though. Any question I had was always answered clearly, and he made sure I understood what he was saying.
This teacher is amazing. He is so helpful and so full of knowledge!
I took his lab and wish I had him for lecture too. He was always nice and approachable & willing to help. The class is difficult, but many are! I recommend this class.
he's freeking awesome. i hate science and i understand this!
Excellent instructor, one of the best at Clark. If you have to take this class, take it from Cushwa. When you listen to other instructors after taking Will, they seem to not know the subject in comparison. Very organized, fair, on-time, and brilliant!
He is a fantastic teacher! Really engrossing, and totally expects his students to succeed, not only in his class, but futher studies as well. Totally recommend!
Willy takes the time for all his students. I recommend him for all classes he teaches. I had him for lab and lecture and he is very knowledgeable. He makes you work and reminds you if you are slackin, but in the end you know the material and are ready for Anatomy and Physiology.
Mr. Cushwa cared about his students and wanted them to learn and interact with his discussion. He tried not to move on until everyone understood the material.
dr cushwa is fabulous, he explains things clearly with non-science examples that students can really understand. he takes time, had help sessions every day before class, completely answers questions, and is incredibly approachable. the homework helped me learn, it wasn't pointless. tests were hard, but not impossible. this is a wonderful teache
Dr. Cushwa has made biology really intresting! He cares about the students, he's not just putting his time in. He makes a big effort to make sure we're learning it! Definently an A+ teacher!!!!!
Cushwa is a great professor. His teaching abilities are amazing and really knows his stuff. He is fair, the tests are hard, and he will call on you every day in class, if you like it or not. its really for your own good tho. The first part of the class is the hardest but don't give up! You have all the tools you need to do well-- USE THEM!
His dedication to his craft is remarkable! He will do everything in his power to help you undrestand. I've never seen a professor make so much time in his busy schedulal to help his students.
I love this man. He is so interested in helping his students. I wish he was my professor for all of my classes!! He is patient, very smart, funny and caring. This class is a must before going into A & P.
Awesome instructor. Tests are hard so you got to study well. I learned a lot in his class. Thanks Dr. Cushwa.

Mr. Cushwa makes class interesting and picks students at random daily to answer questions from studied materials. No textbook, Blackboard course management system, tests, LSGs and RSGs are fair not ridiculously difficult, and he offers some opportunity for extra credit. Use the online resources he provides!
amazing teacher! i would definetly take another class with him. He is really nice and he is always willing to help. He is also an expert in biology and he is willing to explain. Class is challenging but it worth it.

Excellent! Cushwa is a high maintenance prof. and you will work for your grade, but be guaranteed that you will be given every tool you need to succeed. If you are willing to work you will love Cushwa and may even find that you love science after a quarter with him! Tip: Do all your reading, don't miss a class and always ask questions!
He is an EXCELLENT teacher! He is available to help, give study tips, and resources. He wants his students to suceed! I had to work hard for my grade but I learned alot and have a new appreciation for Biology! I would HIGHLY recommend his class! He is passionate about Biology and his students!
As others have stated, Professor Cushwa's classes can be arduous. If you are not interested in learning and are only interested in your grade, you may want to take someone else. If you actually want to know the material, then this is your professor.
Cushwa is brutal! A few people warned me about taking his class, but I had to take it anyway. I barely passed because a lot of the questions on the tests are stuff that isn't covered in the study material. However, he is easy to get ahold of for help.
I took Willy's Genetics Lab and loved it. He's really enthusiastic, fun, and a great person to joke around with with. He's extremely helpful if you're at all confused, and explains things really well 90% of the time. I would take him again if given the chance.
Fantastic teacher! Took his online class. Take it to heart when he says that you need to be able to set aside time to study the material. You WILL work & are expected to absorb the material beyond surface understanding. Put the time in & it is very rewarding. Pay attention to deadlines & don't wait until the last minute to study. Worth the effort!
The BEST teacher I have ever had, by far. His teaching style is very effective, he makes sure you KNOW the stuff; inside-out, backwards, upside-down, and even diagonally. His class is a lot of work but sooo enjoyable and educational. His remarkable knowledge makes him so attractive, and he is just such a likable guy.
Alright, he's handsome. He also teaches way too much/fast. At week four, only one person was raising their hand to participate. The rest of use were left in the dust. For all those folks, this one's for you! Each test was like a FINAL. Very HARD.
I have taken several online classes with Prof Cushwa. Excellent teacher! The BEST! Lots of resources to help you understand the material. Hard classes, but you can achieve an A, even if you aren't going into a science profession. I did, and learned so much! Do the RSGs& don't move past a question until you understand it well and you will do fine.
He is a nice person but CAUTION- his tests are extremely difficult. Also, be prepared for oral "pop quizzes" at the beginning of every class. Only take the hybrid class if you expect to teach yourself the majority of the material and be ready to study A LOT for the exams and just get a so so grade.
I'm not someone who expects anything to be easy but I find that even though I do the required reading and feel like I understand the concepts but come test time...yikes. Plus it seems like the RSG checks are now coming more quickly with much more material on each one. I'm invested in this class but man. :)
I took an online class from Willy. He always graded things fairly quickly, so students could know their grades in the class at all times. He was helpful and provided many different resources to help students master the material. If you're not prepared to work hard though, don't take his classes.
Willy went WAY above and beyond to help me with my fear of taking tests. I learned a lot from this class. I recommend Willy to everyone I know who needs to take this class.
I felt he expected too much out of his students for an online Biology class. Biology is not an easy subject and usually the reason why students take it online is because they do not have time to sit in class, but with this class when he says 10 hrs+ a week he really means it and students really need to put that in otherwise you will have a hard tim
Dr. Cushwa went above and beyond the call to help me understand the material and reduce my test-taking anxiety.
Teacher is very nice, helpful and interested in teaching. He is very engaged and you can really tell he has a passion for the subject of biology. Though the class is interesting, it is extremely hard!!! Be prepared to study constantly and test 2-3 times a week. But if you work hard you will get a decent grade, and he does reward hard work.
Would not take again if I had the chance. Didn't learn a lot, got a decent grade, but wayyy rushed class. I feel sorry for anyone taking him on a semester schedule!!
I took Human Genetics because people said Willy was a great teacher, and a 3 credit online class surely won't be a TON of work, right? Completely wrong. You are expected to memorize insignificant passages of the text and worthless statistics. Please take his classes with caution; this is not a typical 3 credit course!
Genetics & Willy - a home run! 167 is a demanding class - no question, slackers beware. In the end, I was thrilled with the amount of knowledge that I gained :) outstanding! Taking the lab 168 w/ 167 yields big benefits. The 168 is a breeze and a extremely interesting.
I had him for an online class, and by the 8th week, the average grade in his class was a "D". Materials in the reading study guides were not specific to upcoming tests. This is a difficult class, and I would not recommend this instructor to anyone who struggles with the subject.
The last person was right, the average score for the class is around a C to D. If you have prior knowledge in BIOLOGY then this class might be alright. For someone thinking this is going to be a entry college level BIOLOGY class, BEWARE!!! IT IS SO HARD. It has consumed my life! You study and study and still you can not be prepared for his tests!
Such a hard class! Average for class is a D. NOT and entry level class. I have studied and studied..met with him and still I am barley passing his class. BEWARE I do NOTHING but study for his class. Reading Study Guides are not helpful!!
This class was challenging but worth it. I went to speak with him after the first test (got a C), he suggested I change my focus from just the book to the video clips as he uses those to lecture like he normally would in class.Once I did that my study time dropped dramatically and I was able to complete the class with an A. Overall excellent class.
Don't take online classes with him, almost impossible to pass without previous BIOL classes. Very stuck up about his "fair treatment" of students if you get sick, or anything. Has tons of mistakes on the HW and tests, which is why you won't do good. Always check the questions, and bring things up, he usually admits he's wrong.
Clearly the majority of the people who left comments below me do not study, because the questions on the test come directly from the RSGs. In addition, the average shown on BB is a D because the people who drop are still in the system and must have grades entered. Dr. Cushwa is a wonderful professor and he could not be more clear or helpful!
Willy wants his students to succeed, and offers more than enough chances to do so. This is college and students need to study accordingly. If you're looking for an easy A, this isn't the class for you. I learned a tremendous amount from this class and I think Willy is one of most passionate instructors at this college.
I wish Dr. Cushwa taught every subject! He is a great teacher that really wants you to learn and not just pass the class. He uses many resources and different technologies to teach which takes a lot of his spare time and I think it is great. I found my love of science from him and now I am a bio major!
Pros: Very helpful, extremely knowledgeable about subject matter. Cons: For a 3 credit class intended for "non-science majors" this class took up 90% of my time and and energy. He'll warn you about the difficulty of the class, but you may not be fully prepared for how truly hard his classes are
Hands down one of the most delightful people I've ever met. He consistently goes out of his way to help his students. Although I am pathetically driven by pride (and embarrassment) to ask for help when needed, so I struggled a bit. Nonetheless, he is a fun, patient and likable guy so taking his class is worthwhile, even if you fail. Cute too! :D
Hardest class ever. Did I learn the subject and have a good time? Oh yeah, definitely. My opinion is that this class needs to be moved up to 5 credits. Take it if you want to learn genetics, avoid if you like your GPA.
First, Willy is one of the best teachers I have ever had, willing to do what ever it takes to help you succeed! However, THE HARDEST class I have taken, if you are going to get good grade in this class, you need to take a LOT of time to study and take his advice, study guides, videos, read and notes. Ended up with a decent grade, studied 16hrs+a wk
Willy is one of the best teachers ever. He makes himself very available to his students and gets back to u almost immediately. This class takes a lot of time and STUDYING! The tests are pretty hard but he is willing to go over anything with you. He makes these things called study mates and RSG..VERY USEFUL. Such a helpful and caring teacher.
Going to withdrawal from class tomorrow. Incredibly difficult class. I was taking his online Biology 164/165 class. Insane amount of studying, and memorization. His tests require "synthesis level" thinking - so you'll have to know processes more than answers. I feel like he makes the class more harder than it has to be. Nice guy or not, he's hard.
MY FAVORITE TEACHER EVER!!! Lots of resources to help you understand the material including him...He even got back to me on a holiday! I suggest attending the eluminate session, do RSGs, and print the glossary from StudyMate. I highly recommend him and wish more teachers were as involved and caring about their students success as he is.
Definitely should be a 5 credit class for the amount of work required. While I appreciate his consideration in choosing an affordable book, I find the information in the book lacking and the author too informal for a college level book. I have to spend a ton of time researching other sites, which he provides, to learn all the information needed.

Fantastic professor with a genuine passion for science and teaching. Folks going forward in healthcare should be required to take his classes as you will not pass if you do not know the material. You'll be hard pressed to find a teacher who's more passionate. Brace yourself for a challenging course.
In general Biology is an intense class and requires a lot of time researching and reading to fully understand the process but is very rewarding. He does well by providing a number of different resources to learn and study from and is firm about the process but is an awesome instructor!
I had Willy for both Biology 164 and 165. Due to some health issues, I had to retake both classes. He was extremely helpful and understanding. I felt like there was a ton of homework but it prepared me for future classes.
I am sure some people will find that willy is a great teacher, I would very much re think about taking him for ANY online class. Yes he is very smart, but sadly this does a diservice to his teaching, as he words his tests, and quizes Extreme. More than 1/2 were failing.. what does that say.. Good yes with details but not teaching.
Dr. Cushwa is a very personable, funny and intelligent man. However, if you struggle with science subjects/ have a heavy load, be forewarned that taking any online class with him is a HUGE undertaking. I had a very busy term and it was difficult to stay on top of things and get it done. And it was not an easy topic for me either.
AWESOME teacher! he is SO involved with his students and wants them to succeed. The workload is heavy, but its worth it. you actually LEARN and not memorize information. I wish every teacher had the patients, passion and dedication that Willy has!
Willy is a great teacher, and has a huge passion for science. He'll tell you all the degrees that he holds and it proves to you how knowledgable he is on the subjects. His online course is rigerous; however, as long as you follow his study guides, you will do great in the class. He's an approachable person and willing to help whenever needed.
I would never have This Teacher again!!!!, Willy, did NOT followed was his own syllabus. He would took points out the final for no reason, i was a B with 84 points total and the guy gave me a B-? Way to go!! yay.. I do NOT recommend this teacher!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! IF YOU HAVEN'T TAKEN CHEMISTRY YET DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS! This class should have a Chemistry prerequisite. Willy teaches more chemistry than biology. He is NOT helpful when you don't understand chemical processes. He quizzes on the biology and tests on the chemistry. In short I HATE THIS TEACHER!
Do NOT take this class!! It's absolutely horrible. He's unclear and vague on questions and the WHOLE class is based off of weekly quizzes and 4 huge tests. Long story short, it's NOT a good online class and it's almost certain you fail.
Don't be scared off by those who said the class and teacher are hard. its only hard if you don't have the time to put into the class. there is A LOT of work, but it is all valuable. He is a great teacher that wants his students to succeed and finds every outlet to do so. Take a class from him ONLY if you have the time and dedication to put into it
Cushwa is a great teacher that is passionate about genetics and teaching. He is eager to help students and responds to students questions in a very timely manner. However, this class is HARD! Don't be fooled by it only being 3 credits, you're going to have to put in a ton of time and effort if you want to succeed in this class.
Willy is a great teacher who is there to help you as a student. Reading all of the comments about how "bad" he was are untrue. If you WORK for your grade, you will receive what you put in. Remember, this is COLLEGE, not high school. Put in the work, and you will succeed. Willy always responds insightfully and will help you succeed if you let him.
Fantastic teacher! I highly recommend him to anyone taking ANY of his courses. His methods of teaching are simple to follow if you put in the work! Use all of the resources carefully prepared by Willy!
Willy, provides every recourse you need to be successful in this class. He is friendly and timely in communication with his students. Just make sure you have the TIME to dedicate to the course if you want an "A" grade.
I took his online biology course and regret it. I test extremely well, I understand and retain things after very little work. I took tons of notes, read and re read the material and even studied with other students I met up with. I have never put more effort into tests and I got a 65 twice. Why you ask? I don't know. You can't review the test.
The class is really hard because it's a hard class, he doesn't expect anything more from his students than what is entirely possible. Great communicator!
Willy is the best teacher I have had @ Clark. He puts alot effort into the class to help you succeed, and breaks down chapters to help info sink in. It's a lot of work but well worth it.Advice: DUE THE WORK and don't slack off. I would def take another class from him. If you want a teacher who cares about your success then take a class from Willy.
Great teacher, hard class. I had a hard time understanding some of the material and it was time consuming, but Willy was extremely helpful with any and all questions I had.
This was an impossible course to take online in the summer. I dropped the class to maintain my 4.GPA, and retook it with a different professor in the fall and got an A. Yes the material is difficult and you must study A LOT! My advice...don't take this course in the summer. Choose a different professor, and study, study, study!!
Teacher created his "own study guide and weekly quiz" (worded differently then text book) doesn't go over the answers to anything BUT expects you to ask questions and participate. How are we suppose to ask questions when we DON'T know whether our answers are right or wrong? 28 PEOPLE FAILED THE FIRST TEST, need I say more! Find a different teacher
Horrible! Do not take online. Class was very difficult to take online. Comprehension he wants you to have is ridiculous. If you're a biology major, you might enjoy his class. I am retaking with a different teacher and doing just fine. Quizzes are tricky.
This is not a class for people who don't want to study/reach out to professors. Willy is not easy, and he is a very intelligent man. However, he is excited to answer questions especially in collaberate sessions, and as a student I really appreciate teachers with passion for their subject. If you are going into the medical field take this class!
I took the online genetics class. I am 4.0 student with a full class load and I ended up withrawing from this class. It was more time consuming than my other two 5 credit classes combined. He makes it clear in the beginning that he expects you to put in many hours, but to take up more time than my other 10 credits for a 3 credit class, forget it!
I do not understand why so many people are writing that this class is hard and time consuming. It is an on-line course and requires you read a couple very short chapters per week and take a quiz for each little section. You can re-take the quiz as many times as you want. There are three multiple choice exams. Willy provides ample instructions.
Willy is awesome! It is rare to find a teacher such as he who willingly provides so many different study aids and promptly answers questions. He is so nice and down to earth. Yes, this a college course and therefore not easy. I took BIO100 previously, and I am SO GLAD I did! I would highly recommend it as lots of the material was review from BIO100
HUGE WORK LOAD!!! This class should be at least 5 credits! 17 Modules with 2 to 4 chapters per Module/apx 200 new vocabulary words/ memorizing multiple diagrams and tables/videos and live lectures. I was really excited to take this class on Human Genetics, but did not learn much at all as it was simply TOO MUCH. Awesome, caring teacher, however.
A lot of work required in this class. But Willy is an awesome instructor and gives so many opportunities to ask questions, including a video chat for each module. He also gives study guides with each so you don't have to wonder what you should focus on. He's so, so helpful and clarifies anything you have questions on. BUT, prepare to do your work!
2nd class I've taken w/ Willy. Love his teaching style- organized and clear w/ expectations. A lot of work, but doable if you just simply do the assignments- don't get behind! It is college, after all, not high school. He's also very helpful if you have questions. But you have to be willing to ask!
I took BIOL164, BIOL165 and BIOL167 all in one quarter from this teacher. Let me tell you if you stay on top of your work and do the study guides you will do just fine. These are not easy classes and he expects a lot out of students. He is though very helpful and always willing to answer a question.
Quizzes had no less than 1 question with wrong answer. Students called him on it, failed to credit the correct answer. 7 live tests required with this and lab. He's VERY picky, will deduct points at will, doing extra work, not enough room to cite all examples. He's high stress teacher. Extremely unorganized. I'm a good student. Don't take from him!
These aren't easy A's. You MUST complete all the study guides. I am taking the classes from Ohio and he was helpful in ensuring I could take all the exams locally. As a student who works 46hrs a week too, I enjoyed his clarity on what he wants us to study and the information that will be on the tests. Highly recomended to SMART, DRIVEN students.
His teaching method is "Here read this and fill out the homework." He doesn't tell you if you the correct answers. I got marked down on two questions on the last test. One for not having enough information, the other for having too much. He times his tests so that you don't even have time to think. No help offered at any time for working people.
Took this class online, was very discouraged by the whole experience. I studied really hard, but still failed. The test questions were complicated and twisted to an unreasonable extent. Retook this class with another instructor, studied just as hard and got an A.
Cushwa explains everything super well at the beginning of the quarter. He outlines EXACTLY what you will need to do to be successful in his class. I have no idea why so many people are complaining about him, I have an A in his class and I have literally never opened the textbook. Put in the effort and you will do fine.
Class was alot of work but he was really helpful. Great teacher.
Extremely unreasonable. This class should be worth 6 credits with the amount of work he expects you to do and the amount of detail you have to pay attention to, not just the basics. He says 1 thing then does another, all the questions are from the study guide, but here's a random question for you, you have one minute left on the quiz so think fast!
He excepts way too much from his students for a 3 credit class. I had so many problems with him, this was the first class I've ever dropped. This class is very stressful, I wish I dropped it sooner. I had to put more effort into this class than my other 3 classes combined that equal to 10 credit. He literally expects you to study 1.5 hours a day.
Willy really wants his students to succeed but YOU HAVE TO DO THE WORK. I took the class online, worked through the study guides, used the tools, watch the videos, and online Q&A's. I've done fine.I usually suck at science;this is the 1st bio class I've ever NOT dropped. Unless I really screw up the last test, I'll be finishing the class with an A.
Willy is a wonderful professor! He gives you clear expectations which are more than reasonable and does not demand anymore than that. If you do the study guides they will prepare you well for the exams. This is one of the most organized and well taught online courses I have ever taken. I learned so much and I thoroughly enjoyed the class.
His biology class was more intensive than the other classes I was taking at the time, but if you put in the work, you will pass the class. He's very informal and approachable which makes it easy to approach him with questions on the homework he assigns. Don't be afraid to ask him for help: he's very smart and has a lot of patience.
Professor Cushwa is connected, compassionate, knowledgeable, unassuming and above all else genuinely interested in teaching. I have never had a science teacher who, i have felt, has been so absolutely invested in providing students with every resource necessary for success in a course. Use the reading study guide & do all of the assigned problems.
Willy is a GREAT professor. Anyone saying otherwise did not realize how much time and effort is needed to succeed. He will provide students with all of the information and help they need IF they take the time to participate in discussions. The discussions and reading reviews will make the difference in your grade.
Willy is a great professor. There is nothing wrong with him, but I struggled because science is not my best topic. I recommend that you do absolutely EVERYTHING that he gives. And know your reading study guide by heart. If you understand your quiz questions inside and out you will pass the tests with flying colors. I wish I would have known this .
Amazing instructor! He lays everyting out for you in advance if you read his syllabus and intro letters you know you work for your grade. Not an easy class by any means, but i learned A TON!!! I took this with a full load (13 credits) in summer and would not reccommend that. Those who have graded him poorly don't want to work for the grade.
Willy's classes are setting you up for success. If you desire to be a student who learns and earns their grade, this is the class. Well worth my money and my time spent into these credits. Taking him again for sure! He provides reading study guides that are so helpful for tests as well as an opportunity to connect with him once a week and ask q's!
Willy truly wants to see his students succeed and provides everything needed to do so. If you use all the resources he offers you, you will pass with flying colors. Everything on the tests are covered in his reading study guides, so utilize them! I have gained and learned so much from this course. I recommend 100%, you will not regret it.
Willy is an amazing instructor! He is one that actually cares about his students! His tests are difficult, as are the weekly quiz's. However, if you do a good and thorough job on the study guides, you will ace every quiz, period. If I wouldn't have been working 60+ hours a week, I would have aced this class easily. I definitely recommend Willy!!
If you do your homework, of which there is a lot, you will do great. The exact questions you need to know are given to you before each quiz. Some of the questions are pretty complex, but the Q&A sessions offer complete clarity if you just ask. If you do the leg work, you can get an A without a doubt.
I haven't taken a Science class in 20yrs and I got an A! He makes you actually LEARN the material, you have to respect that. Questions on quiztest require you to understand the whole of the material, but if you study (read book, watch videos, join bb sessions, post to q&a, use study mate) it's actually not that hard. GREAT TEACHER! you EARN it.
If you can't do a lot of studying on your own, don't take an online class! Willy is a terrific instructor who is willing to help out those who seek out help! Attend as many of the collaborate sessions as you can, or watch them later if you can't. And utilize ALL the resources he gives you. Attention to detail is a must. Do all self-assessments too!
Dr. Cushwa is an excellent teacher. He is very good at explaining the information presented in the class. He is also very prompt in his replies to students posts and questions. I would definitely recommend this class.
All the information you need to do well is provided. Which is extremely helpful. His tips for how to do well are correct, ASK questions, study, and use the resources provided. The exams are harder than one may expect for an entry level class so studying is required.
Information overload. Read, study, do the activities and don't ask for leniency unless you are confident that you've gone above and beyond in every aspect. He admits that he looks and can see the time you spend online studying and will answer your complaints accordingly. Environment is too controlled for my taste.
This class makes A and P look easy! Follow the study guides, read everything three times, do all of the assignments, and pray for a B. You'll learn to "understand" like he directs but you'll get questions that require no understanding but instead pure memorization. And don't pull up the page then go offline to read or he'll claim no participation.
Spent more time studying on this 3 credit course than my other two 5 credit courses combined. Always makes mistakes on quizzes then regrades. Most people don't do well on quizzestests, so he brings the averages up by giving extra points. Skips around the text book which makes you confused on sequence of info. Extra credit option not worth it.
This was my 2nd class taken from Dr. Cushwa and I was glad I did. The classes are NOT easy, but if you put in the effort you can EARN an A for sure. WIlly, as he prefers to be called, is am amazing teacher. If you want to actually learn, then take this class. If you are hoping for an easy class, then stay away. GREAT TEACHER!
This was a really enjoyable class for me. Willy does a good job of covering the material well and the grading is clear. You must apply yourself and do the work to pass, but getting an A in this class was not difficult if you do the reading. **Also look into your local library for the books they have them.
This class is great, but the lab portion of it requires heavy proctored testing. If you have bad test anxiety, I wouldn't recommend, but if you can handle the stress you'll probably do well in the class. Cushwa is very responsive, but you have to ask him for help. His syllabus really outlines EXACTLY what he expects from you, so read it!
Willy is amazing! Don't let the reviews of how tough he is scare you. He cares for his students and wants them to succeed. If you are lazy or too afraid to ask questions, you will have problems. This has been my favorite class so far! Sad to see it end. Read the material, watch the videos, listen to lectures, and you will be fine and learn a lot!!
I took his class online and it is time consuming, but if you do the work you will pass! Do the study guides AND the self-assessment!!! I can't say this enough! The exact questions from both of those will be on the topic quizzes so it's pretty easy if you do them BOTH! Study for the test (flashcards help) and attend video session for extra credit!
Took my 3rd class from Dr. Cushwa this past quarter. Bio lab was tough but Willy gives you all the tools you need to be successful in class. Be ready to actually LEARN the material. I did NOT take this along with 164, I took that 2 quarters ago. Lab alone is less interactive than human bio or human genetics. GREAT TEACHER!
This is the most difficult 3 credit class I have ever taken! Way too much work especially online. Willy is great though.
Use the materials provided. You have to work for your grade! No easy A here.
I really enjoyed the way it was set up. It is fairly easy if you watch the video's and complete the RSG's. If you have any questions, go to his Collaborative Sessions, which count for extra credit. Complete all the attempts on the Practice Quizzes. I am a Marketing major, and learned more from this class than most classes related to my major.
I took this online and it was a nightmare trying to figure out. Every few weeks you go to WSU to take a test on the modules. Make sure to use every studying method he gives you, because it will be on the test.
Willy is a great professor. While the tests are tough, Willy gives out tons of extra credit to make up for poor test grades. You need to work hard to get a passing grade in the class, but I learned a lot from the class.
This class was not an easy A. You definitely have to understand the concepts and work on the class almost every day. Willy is a great professor and very helpful. Any questions you have he is more than happy to help.
It is a hard class, but Willy helps out when you need it and gives plenty of resources to use so there are no surprises on the tests. He even created an online version of the book so that you don't have to pay.
Excellent teacher. Very helpful and nice!! I would definitely take another class with him!!
Cushwa is an awesome teacher. He provides much more than enough resources and is clearly determined to have his students succeed in his class. Extra credit is available as well. Just don't procrastinate on your reading assignments and take good notes that relate to the RSG's and you'll be fine. Interesting stuff here.
Cushwa provides everything you need to be successful in his class. I took his online Bio Lab, so I wasn't always in direct contact with him, but when I was, I got plenty of feedback when it was necessary. Each lab had every bit of information you needed to get a good grade, so if you did badly, it's probably because you didn't do it.
Willy provides little support. The class was online, and very independent. If you had a question, he wouldn't answer it, he would just give you the place to look for the answer. There were like 10 quizzes, that you took at home, with notes, and 3 tests, which he gave you a notecards worth of notes. Overall, it was an easy class if you're not needy.
This class is very difficult and requires lots of studying. Although Cushwa has hard tests and a lot of work, he's extremely helpful and puts in a lot of work to help you understand the material. I wouldn't recommend this class if you're just trying to get a science credit
The tests are tough. However, the extra credit he gives helped me out tremendously. Attended the Online Help Sessions which are help the day of quizes and the day before tests at 12:30 and post on the discussion boards.
Resources included affordable and digestible books, video clips, practice tests, reading study guides. Syllabus included effective study strategies. Before each quiz there was a live Q&A. Forums to ask questions about each chapter. He encouraged students to help each other to test their understanding, but always provided explanations of concepts.
I would not recommend taking this class online if you're not very self-motivated. The online video lectures are bland and boring just like the book. I found it very hard to be motivated for this class. There are weekly quizzes and 4 big 100 point tests throughout the quarter.
Unless you have nothing better to do with your life then to sit down and spend all day reading and studying for his tests and quizzes, then don't take this class. His tests and quizzes set you up for failure, unless of course you've memorized the book word for word.
I Just wanted to take a moment & share my experience. I failed the first two exams. I reached out to Willy & he gave me some suggestions on how to study better. I have to admit that he was right! I passed this last exam & I really think I'm going to do WELL on the final exam. You do have to study & work hard but it's college & should be challenging
This was not an "easy" class and it's dull. However, Willy offers so many resources and suggestions for how to better know the information. He is very focused on "synthesis level thinking" and wants you to understand the information rather than memorize a lot of information. I did great in the class because I put in the work and it was rewarding.
Willy is a great teacher and one of the few who want his students to do well. You can have a good grade if you put in the time and effort and participate. If you have questions, ask, they will be answered above and beyond. I'm so glad I had a chance to attend this class.
The class was very challenging for a introductory class. If I took the class without prior knowledge to the material I would've failed. Class results from quizzes and test were final. His methods of teaching online weren't very proactive for people who are taking other classes at the same time. Nice guy but very strict on test and quizzes.
You need to really have a lot of self discipline. Requires daily reading and work to keep up, but, a great teacher who gives plenty of resources and answers your questions. There's an online Q&A session per chapter plus forums in where he helps answer any questions. Great teacher, need to know how to schedule your time to succeed.
Willy was great. The class was good with lots of resources. If you utilized everything offered you will do well.
Most thought out and helpful online class I have taken. My advice to anyone taking the class would be to utilize the discussion forum, understand the study guide, and watch the supplied videos. To succeed in this class you need to understand the material, not mesmerize it. Bonus; free online textbook!
Willy is an amazing prof! He goes way above and beyond in explaining things, does weekly collaborate sessions online, makes his own videos on the material, wrote his own textbook for us to use, and is always available and happy to help you if needed. Gives ex cred. every week if you want it. Test material pulled directly from course work. Great guy
Cushwa is awesome! I took it online, but tests were proctored at the school. First two tests were difficult because of content, but still got a B on both! He's always available for questions and goes above and beyond in explaining work. If you read a little bit of the chapter everyday, its very manageable. Gives you tons of resources to succeed.
Willy is pretty awesome! I took this class online and he has been one of the most organized professors I've had! He provides everything you need; videos, study activities such as flash cards, and really good study guides. The class itself is difficult but he is very helpful.
Willy is an awesome professor! I took this class online which was a little scary because of the heavy material- but Willy provides everything you could possibly need! He supplies you with videos, flash cards, study guides and practice worksheets for every topic! He truly wants his students to succeed and does an awesome job!
Not sure why theres so many tough grader tags. The tests and quizzes are all multiple choice, so either you know the material or you don't. The material can be dense somtimes, but he wrote the textbook so it is easier to follow than others. He is a great prof, and truly wants all students to succeed. Gives plenty of resources & always willing 2 hlp
Willy is an extremely good teacher and makes time to help his students. There is no final, but a solid amount of homework and he expects you to study for at least 2 hours a day. In order to get a good grade do everything he tells you to do. There are Study Guides, Practice Quizzes, and Videos to watch weekly.
Teacher offers a wide variety of resources for studying and is very helpful in answering questions (there's even a dedicated Q&A forum for every chapter read, as well as a weekly blackboard Q&A). The exams are all multiple choice, but studying is needed to do well. The teacher actively works to use resources that are cheap and is very nice.
The majority of the work gets the smallest percentage of the grade, the homework & labs that you spend the majority of time on are minimal toward your grade. Off site test are the majority. Example: you could have an 85% in the class & get 1 bad grade on 1 test & it drops you to 45%, making it difficult to pass. Not a great test taker, don't take.
Willy was a great teacher, but he makes you work for your grade. There is a lot of textbook reading (to be expected in a science class), but he also provides videos that you must watch as well. The videos are a great resource, but if you're looking for an online class that allows you to be flexible with your time, I wouldn't recommend him.
Willy is an excellent teacher he is always there to help this is a tough class but if you listen to him and do what he says you will get through. This class is more than memorization its about understanding the content
Hes a great teacher and is great with feedback as well as emails. He does a wonderful job with providing resources for you to get the most out of the course and studying. You must do the work to get the benefit. If you follow his instructions and use all his resources, you should do well. Keep in mind though, this is biology. It is a detail heavy.
By far one of my favorite professors! Provides many study tools and learning materials and opportunities for getting help. He is very friendly in the Blackboard Collab sessions and likes to give EC to students that show initiative in the class. If you utilize all study materials, especially the videos and practice quizzes, you will breeze through.
Most exasperating teacher EVER! I'm an A student, get 100 % in most online class assignments. This guy nitpicks!!!! He LOVES to talk & throw out minutia. Homework assignments make you HUNT for instructions like a wild goose chase. Course content NOT difficult. Excessive instructions show lack of clarity. Ex post facto grading.
This professor wants you to do well, and he gives you all the tools to get an A. I am currently in his class, and I will admit I was initially overwhelmed, but honestly, if you read the syllabus and do what he asks you to do, you will actually learn the material and be able to get an A. Extra credit is offered, which is awesome. Proctored tests.
I do not recommend taking Biology with this teacher. Tons of work that he doesn't even put in the grade book, so there's never a reminder of when it's due. Ridiculous amount of work, like it's the only class you have. I asked him about that and he said it would take him too long to enter grades. That's his job. Sends out too many notifications.
You are really going to work for your grade in this class. There is tons of study material available and you must use all of it to fully understand all the material. The textbook can be difficult to read at times. The proctored tests count heavily towards your grade and the questions are not always the same as in the study guides.
Willy is the best online teacher I have ever had. He is very quick to answer questions. He provides a lot of resources to help you learn including short videos of him further explaining concepts. You won't be able to breeze through the class, but if you actually use all the resources he provides for you and study, you will pass the class.
Best online teacher! I'm not fond of Science and was afraid I will fail but RSGs, activities and quizzes made it bearable and prepare you for the big tests. As for the lab, as long as you are following the instructions, you'll most likely succeed! I like that he cares for the student's success and it inspired me to do well. Don't be afraid to ask!!
Read the syllabus and use the tools provided by the teacher. He practically tells you exactly what you need to do to be successful in the class. Dont be intimidated by the long syllabus or proctored tests. You can do it and you will retain the information learned in this class. He knows what hes doing! If you want an easy A, this isnt the class!
Professor Cushwa is a great professor, but this is a hard class. I highly recommend using all of the materials given and do all of the readings at the start, it will make the class a lot easier. Split the sections of the chapters up by day doing the RSGs throughout the week. This will make the information a lot easier to understand. Good luck!
Amazing instructor. Having HW online lets you take it over and over, so you really remember what you learn, and makes for easy 100% on your HW/quizzes. Big tests are VERY important but you get a notecard. Make use of the Reading Study Guide and chapter assessments, they are your best study tools. He'll answer all your questions. Gives xtra credit.
Willy is a great instructor. Everything you need to pass is givin to you in modules. If you need help he will be more than willing to help you. There is alot of work but its to help you pass.I havent takin a science course since 2013, work full time, took 2 other classes, had my wedding during finals week, and still passed. Recommend this class.
THIS CLASS IS HARD! A lot of work for a 3 credit class, However, VERY interesting. Willy was great! lots of resources, organized and caring. BUT- if you take this class- do not fall behind- do all the extra credit- attend the online Q&A session-Complete all the reading guides, take notes during the videos. Tests based on both. Learned a lot overall
Great professor, even though the class I took from him was online, he was very active and helpful. He expects you to be knowledgeable on the subject. Class work includes weekly graded activities and a practice quiz, both of which you can retake as many times as you'd like. Those are followed by a weekly mandatory quiz and every few weeks a test.
I took BIOL 164 online and found it to be interesting and manageable. Watching the videos on Canvas really helped me ace the tests.
The thing i hate most in life is science. physics biology and chemistry . so i started this class very annoyed that i had to take it. There will be a lot of reading a lot. a lot of studying. a lot of torture. The best way to be prepared, is to follow the video he posts in the beginning of the quarter. Do all the work and study the RSG!!!
I took this class online which usually makes things hard, but Cushwa was great with communication and regularly checking his emails, he had weekly class video Q&A session which helped wonders, he provided plenty of resources to help his students pass his class. I would highly recommend taking a class with him.
He is good. He provides clear videos explaining textbook images, which helped me. You really need to read the book thoroughly, do all of the studymate activites, and look over the resources he gives you if you want to succeed in the class. Willy is really good with feedback and is helpful when you have questions or need help. Would recommend. :)
You have to do the reading and study hard for this class. If you do the things he tells you to do you will do great in this class. I am not a science person at all but I followed all of his instructions and did the work and was able to pass with a high B. Very good professor and I would love if he taught other science classes!
I liked Willy! He was really nice and seemed like a really good guy! His assignments were pretty straight forward but it is a lot. If you're looking for something easy with little effort don't take this class. Lots of quizzes. Lots of homework. And a lot of reading. I ended with a high B! Overall it was a pretty good experience!
One of my favorite classes I've taken at Clark so far. Definitely not an easy A so don't go into it thinking that. He provides study guides and edited the textbook that's used for the class. So if you follow directions everything is in order. You can tell he knows what he's doing and he's committed to helping students pass the class. highly rec.
For me, the class was a little difficult. You have to study every day to really understand the material fully. Professor Cushwa was very good about giving feedback and gave many opportunities to ask questions. He offered as much help and material as possible to help us understand what we were learning.
Took his human genetics class online. Didnt expect it to be as work heavy as it was, but as long as you actually do the work and make an effort to understand what youre reading, the weekly work really isnt that difficult. Definitely give yourself lots of time to do it though, procrastinating and doing it all hours before it was due was no bueno.
Willy's class is very educational, but you have to work for your grade. Completing the RSGs, watching all of the videos, and attending the zoom sessions can help you get a good grade. You really learn the material from this class. It is my third time I have had him and I love how much I have learned and the challenge I'm presented.
You have probably heard that BIO164 is one of the hardest science classes. As for a business major, it was a definite challenge however Willy does so much to allow students to become successful. DO NOT SKIP sections/ think that you will get away with it. Go to the Zoom Sessions, split the sections up into several days, and watch all the videos.
Now, I am the type of person to get everything done in one day. But, this class was the one class where I had to study everyday (2-3 hrs). You have to work for your grade. My biggest advice is to take advantage of the Zoom sessions, RSGs, the readings, & videos. Seriously, just do those things and stay focused, and you will have an A to B!
This class isn't particularly difficult concept wise as long as you put in the effort to ensure that you know the material you'll have no problem. In a case where you don't preform well Willy reaches out to those students and encourages them to contact him to get help. Make sure to read and do all the activities given to you, you'll do just fine!
You have to work for your grade but Willy gives you every opportunity possible to do well in his class. You have to stay focused and do all the work which you should anyways because the learning material itself is really interesting. If you take this class, don't say that you can get by and not do the readings, etc. You'll snowball into failing.
At first I was worried about taking this class due to the level of difficulty other students said it was. After taking it, I really didnt struggle like I thought I would. I got a B in the class and his grading is reasonable.
Willy has been a good teacher. Definitely does not hesitate to call an answer wrong, which is a good thing if you want to learn the material. You need to study, if not daily at least through some cram sessions before big proctored tests. Read all of the material, do study guides and watch all the videos if you want to get a good grade.
There are four major tests, but you are given plenty of resources to succeed and are allowed a notecard. Do the study guides and you will do well. This class was pretty easy but very informational. Teacher is helpful and caring. Allows 30 points of extra credit. Great class would defiantly recommend.
I am going as an environmental architect major and at first I was uncertain about taking this course because of how hard everyone said it was going to be. It was. However, he provided a lot of very useful sources to help contribute to the learning process that I really appreciated.
Professor Cushwa is amazing! It's a tough class, but he gives you all the resources you need to succeed. Make sure to dedicate the time he suggests, put in the work, and there isn't any reason why you shouldn't get an A. Join his video conference sessions too, it's a great way to ask questions and make sure that the material is clear before a test.
To say that Willy is a phenomenal professor would be an understatement. He provides you with all of the resources you need to succeed (and more), and is always available and willing to answer questions and help guide you through the material If you do not succeed in his classes, you really only have yourself to blame.
I took his online Human Genetics class at Clark College and he was great! The workload is extensive, however, you learn so much! If you are just looking for an easy A, this is not the class for you. You get what you give. He is quick to answer questions and the zoom sessions makes obtaining the knowledge more understandable.
Took the online course.
Willy is an amazing instructor! He gives you all the resources needed to excel in this class, plus more. However, I can't stress enough how important it is to study EVERY DAY. This class is easily the hardest I've taken. Missing one week will easily drop a letter grade. He is so helpful and his curriculum is immaculate, but this class is HARD.
Hardest class I've ever taken. Every 5 days a new chapter is due which includes: activities, a practice quiz, and a real quiz. You are expected to know every detail of the information provided. Luckily extra credit exists so be sure to do as much as possible. Be ready for multiple mental breakdowns! Otherwise, I learned a lot and it was rewarding.
Human genetics for non-biology majors. If you want an easy A do not take his class. Not much homework, the class is mainly graded on quizzes and tests. He gives "optional" worksheets for each reading, and if you want to pass you better do those worksheets. Willy goes out of his way to help students. Hard work, but I enjoyed the class.
Willy Cushwa over all is a good person. Respectable actually has some good humor. However his exams are really outrageous. Basically if half the class fails he wont curve or give EC. Understandably he wants us to know information. But then the exams are more complex than what he posts to study. Note cards are useful but please dont depent on them.
I usually do not enjoy science classes but actually found this one very interesting and enjoyable! This professor is very organized and very helpful! He provides many extra credit opportunities and provides many places for students to ask questions. My recommendation would be stay organized and dont fall behind. Also do vocab before study guides.
The best teacher at Clark. Amazing class, so informative and beneficial even if you arent a science major. He is the most fair and ideal teacher youd want. You have to work for your grade but he lays all of his rules of success out for you. Please follow them, at least 80%, its so worth it. Dont fall behind because there is a lot of information
His online class is very organized. If you watch the sessions, read the book and do the homework, you will have most of the information to get good grades on the exams. But, you have to follow the schedule because its a lot of information.
Willy gives you all the information you need to get through the class. Expect to put in lots of study time. He offers online Q&A forums, video chats for each chapter, you can arrange for EC. If you aren't motivated to study and do the work the class will be hard for you. He really wants his students to succeed and it's a great class!
This class was one of the hardest I have taken at Clark but the professor is, by far, the best. I wasn't expecting the amount of reading or study time that was needed to pass but once I figured it out, it was a breeze. Willy really wants his students to succeed and if you put in the effort, you will.
If you are willing to give up your social life and endure some mental break downs by all means take this class. This is an entry level biology course yet this instructor expects you to commit to it as if your majoring in bio. Unless biology interests you and you want to spend 4+ hours a day studying then maybe youll be fine.
Yes, you have to work in his class. READ all instructions and you wont have much questions, he writes out everything to a T. He's an awesome professor and knows his biology well and you should too, even though i'm an accounting major, I enjoyed his class. He does weekly video Q sessions, COME & ASK and you'll get extra credit.
Honestly, this was the worst class/teacher I took while at Clark College. The amount of work he expects from you is insane, and he was quite rude as well. I took this online course because I had to get surgery and would not be able to walk around, yet we were expected to come in for tests. Do not take unless you or an aspiring nurse.
The tests were extremely hard and you had to pay for the proctorU test taking program if you didnt want to drive to the campus and take the test. Barely any extra credit opportunities. Doesnt really give good feedback. Wouldnt take this class again
This class is made for people who want to become a scientist. If you are willing to study 6 hours a day its for you. The professor wasnt very helpful and hard to talk to for help. His grading is very difficult and each person gets different tests and quizzes. Not a very fair learning experience. The homework doesnt help for tests either.
His class is fine if you are not taking ANY other classes. You must devote almost 100% of your time to studying to pass to proctored tests which are 200 points each. This class definitely will be dropping my GPA a little bit. Study or you will not pass the class, stay on stop of the assignments and do not miss anything.
Taking online, by far the worst class I have taken yet, very hard, his tests which weigh heavy have nothing to do with the assignments. The assignments are so easy doesn't help with tests. He's very rude ab people who fail & he is not understanding at all. He expects you to go to campus for tests, and be in his video chats. Not worth the time or $$
This is the worst class I ever took. I put so many hours for tests, but it was in vain. Beware. Again worst class ever.
Willy is a real genuine guy, cares a LOT about Human Biology. However, this class is hands down the hardest class you will take at Clark. I have been here for a year and have done full time credits. This class took a lot of studying, doing homework, and reading . All the reviews are spot on, i'm an A student. This class is TOUGH. BEWARE!!
theres a practice quiz, actual quiz, & 4+ activities due every week but theyre pretty quick & could easily be done in a day. theres usually multiple/unlimited attempts to get the score you want for those. theres extra credit opportunities too. as long as you use your resources and do the work, youll do great. i recommend if u need the credit
I love his teaching style. His class is organized and clear on expectations, he keeps his grades up to date and provides excellent, clear feedback. Through his class I have an excellent foundation of knowledge to build on. Attend his zoom sessions, he summarizes the content in a way that makes sense and ties everything together.
By far the worst professor I have ever taken. He has no consideration for student difficulties. He does not give any leeway with late assignments, but makes the due dates unclear and inconsistent. Gives himself a break Fri-Sun but assigns things to students due on Saturdays and Sundays. Why does he get a break but expects us to work 7 days a week??
Most UNHELPFUL teacher I have ever had. Seriously. No consideration for students. Does NOT care about any types of difficulties submitting assignments. Unclear due dates and assigns stuff due on the weekends (Saturday and Sunday nights) but makes him self completely unavailable each weekend. Provides no assistance with anything. At all. Ever.
You read the chapter, have a couple of activities that aid understanding, take a practice test than the actual test. Easy to do by yourself. You typically have one chapter a week, some of the smaller chapters might be paired with another chapter. Offers support and help. I would recommend him even if you are a person that needs more support.
Great class. There's a lot of reading and videos, but the materials are free. The lecture course's assignments were exclusively tests. The lab had quizzes and lab reports; read the lab instructions carefully. Do not put off doing the reading. Follow the schedule in the syllabus; you can't do a chapter in a day. He does offer EC and answer emails.
Good class and good professor. Due dates are all over the place for the class (not consistent every week), but the lab due dates are consistent and everything is due at 11:45 PM, not 11:59. Doesn't accept late work, but he does drop the lowest lab score. Pay attention to the syllabus, read the textbook, and you'll be fine.
By far my favorite class I have ever taken, and it's because of Prof. Cushwa. He gave me such a firm foundation of biology that was interesting and made it make sense. This has paved the way for my future classes, I'm sure I would be struggling right now in A&P if it weren't for him. Read the book and make sure you understand it, he will help you.
I learned sooo much in Willy's genetics class. The workload is definitely more 5 credit heavy instead of the 3 that it is. Despite that, the course is set up really well and Willy was always ready to help. I really retained a lot, and it has helped in so many other classes. Make sure to do the RSGs he makes.
Cushwa's great, if you like having a robot for a teacher. Doesn't seem to grasp the idea that not all students have the same online learning circumstances, makes no accommodations even when you reach out. Stringent rules and deadlines which in the era of Covid-learning comes off as very tone-deaf, and creates a negative learning environment.
Lays out all the work for you online but doesn't do anything himself. All the grading is automatic. The textbook was a horrible read, most of the information in it was directly copied definitions from online. It was written by him by the way. Don't take this professor.
This is a very good teacher. He does give a lot of homework, some of it is required, some not. But that homework really drives the learning in and helps you improve a lot better at the given topic. He's also really really cheerful and positive, but will be strict if there's any cheating or disrespect.
While I'm not certain about his in-person classes, Prof. Cushwa is clearly out of his depth when teaching online. Little is done to accommodate on how other students learn (in fact, he outright tells you that there is only one style of learning), and seems unable to make his class engaging and fun. Smug & dismissive while claiming approachability.
I loved taking Human Bio with Willy! His class was the hardest one I've taken, but I really enjoyed it and I learned way more than I thought I could in 10 weeks. It wasn't very discussion heavy meaning you just did your own work and went through the course on your own. He was very accessible, however, and when I had questions, he had answers.
Professor Cushwa is a teacher that I really enjoyed. His Human Genetics program is designed so that you cover 2-3 topics per week. Quizzes make up the bulk of your assignments. Put effort into your answers and give every question your best shot and you'll do well. He offers extra credit opportunities and lectures for every topic.
If I could rate a 0, I would. Professor Cushwa scatters work everywhere in the modules, he does not do "week 1, 2, 3.. etc. He posts submission links that tells you how to submit the assignment and rubric but does not even tell you the assignment directions on it. I literally had to do control F to search on my computer for the work.. IF THAT..
Professor Cushwa is VERY good at online teaching. The best asynchronous course design I've ever seen. He lets you take every quiz twice with no penalty. Every week there's a new Reading Study Guide associated with the assigned chapters, and if you really take the time to fill it out in detail, it's basically a cheat sheet. I learned SOOOO much.
There is a LOT of homework in this course. I was put off at first by his comment at the beginning of the term about not taking his class if you are working, going to school full time or have a family. I have all three so I have very worried. I did get an A but it was the hardest class i've ever taken. Wish it was orgaized better in Canvas.
This is a very difficult course, so don't take it if you're lazy. Getting help from Cushwa is very difficult as he's only available four days out of the week, yet he schedules his assignments due on days he's unavailable, thus leaving you to fend for yourself. His online Lab was underwhelming too, but I took his course during peak COVID.
Someone please tell this man that a 3 credit course should not be more workload heavy than any 5 credit course I've ever taken.
This was the hardest and WORST class I have ever taken during my time at Clark, and the irony is- this is 3 CREDIT INTRO CLASS. 2+ tests, 2+ assignments per week, hours and hours of material to read, an expectation of knowing what isn't provided in the course material for several graded questions, changed due dates around (earlier,) constantly!
He's feedback put you down instead of encouragement. Also, he's videos are not very clear on the main information, On the other hand, the 2 books that this professor used in class are the same info. Just reading the same terms, and same info in two different books confuses the idea instead of followup the subject. College accounting student.
Here is data from my class evaluations last quarter (42 students responded): 1. Provides clear explanations: 3.5/4 2. Promptly grades & returns assignments: 3.6/4 3. Responds with respect: 3.6/4 4. Organization & preparation: 3.5/4 5. Assessments focus on course concepts: 3.7/4 6. Provides useful guidelines for course work: 3.5/4 Thanks, W. Cushwa
Willy is super sweet, I struggled the first weeks of class but he offered help. Is fast at replying to emails, and makes time to help students. The work is HEAVY definitely more of a 5 unit class than 3. He gives you study questions/worksheets, which your exam will be based on. Its not necessarily difficult, just very time consuming. test heavy.
Willy makes passing a matter of effort. Every week has a study guide that should answer any test questions once completed. I wish the course load was a lighter because I feel like it's too much to retain. The course is a little bloated and you will probably forget most things the week after. The assignments are not hard but are time consuming
There is an unreasonable amount of work in this class. He starts cramming multiple weeks of work into one week and the due dates make no sense. I get that he is probably enthusiastic about us learning a lot but at this point I'm just rushing through everything and relying on my notes so I don't remember anything I learned.
I spend hours doing these study guide's only to find out that most of the information on the quizzes has nothing to do with the study guide... I am then left frantically scrambling through the textbook to find answers cause, unsurprisingly, I can't memorize 40 pages of biology information per week while doing 2 other classes and holding down a job.
He nitpicks when grading his assignments and his test questions are often obscure and meaningless
You'll start this class and think to yourself: "Okay, this isn't so bad. The work load is heavy but as long as I complete the study guide I can pass all the tests!" ... WRONG. The study guide questions make up about 20-30% of your quiz questions. He also scatters info between linked resources and the textbook so you spend hours scouring.
i took 10 credits of math and psychology, of which I put 10 to 20 hours a week, and i got an A and an A+. i spent about 40 to 50 hours in his 3 credit class, and i barely escaped with a C. He put my college in jeopardy. I neglected my children. I started working on my resume. This guy needs to be fired.
Study guides and video notes demanding but manageable. Clear instructions were crucial to avoid unnecessary work. Reading announcements proved essential. I recommend Willy Cushwa as a teacher, his teaching methods encourage active learning, and his approachability and responsiveness create a supportive learning environment.
The study guide worksheets he provided for each quiz were incredibly helpful. He goes above and beyond by offering weekly extra credit assignments. The fact that he's readily available to answer questions and provide guidance is a testament to his dedication as an educator. I took multiple classes taught by Willy due to the positive experiences.
Dr Cushwa is a great instructor and is very interested in biology. He makes biology fun to learn. I took 2 different classes with him and both were successful. He is very approachable and willing to find ways to help students be successful. There is a lot of work that is required for his class but he offers many ways to earn extra credit.
Willy was a pretty organized professor, but if you don't understand something, he will be very passive aggressive in responses to emails. Labs/lab quizzes most of the time don't align with the material presented. Nice guy but hard to get a good response out of.
Cushwa as a person seems like he could be a cool guy. But he is a horrible professor. His class is extremely homework heavy and strictly test based. I had to sacrifice a lot of my life for this class. I do not recommend taking this class if you like yourself. Oh btw he does this thing where in the middle of the term he will 2x the work load
If your thinking of taking Cushwa's class I really recommend looking at other options Its clear Cushwa is out of touch with reality when it comes to workload I spent more time in this course then my other 3 classes adding up to 12 credits Please for your mental health don't take his class. Cushwa is smart but too hardcore for this basic bio class.
If you're considering taking Willy's course, please please PLEASE look into a different professor. The workload is insane and his class is unorganized. Sometimes, assignments won't get graded because of a system error and there's nothing you can do to get your grade back for your hard work. He'll recommend extra credit, but it's super frustrating.
The most frustrating professor I've ever had. Course layout is incredibly unorganized. You will miss assignments because of how poorly it is laid out. You do things through an external app that often messes up your grade and he is literally unwilling to fix it. You just have to take the 0 even though you got an A on the assignment.
Hardest, most detailed, professor I've ever had in my life. He provides a lot of info, mini lectures, activities, quizzes, labs per each module. If you don't word Labs exactly as printed in the beginning of the modules, you will be marked down substantially. Grades are based on test only. Time-consuming perfectionist difficult is an understatement
He is not helpful or encouraging. Textbook is written by himself and is vague and unorganized. Does not provide clear information about topics. Lot of material from study guides and videos is not covered in quizzes. You will spend hours trying to complete everything. If you ask for help he will tell you you should have asked sooner.
There is sooooo much work that goes into Wills class. He made his own textbook and seems very knowledgeable of the material. He is willing to help his students and encourages participation for extra credit. Heads up, in the middle of the term the workload is unexpectantly doubled.
It is not hard, just time consuming. If you plan on taking Willy for Bio 175, just plan to spend at least 5-6 hours per week to complete assignments. Willy offer a lot of extra credits to boost up grade. Also, unlimited attempts for activities and quizzes. 2 attempts for Tests which help me review my mistake and retry for better grades.
Willy is a nice guy who wants the best for his students, he can be very picky with his grading and there is a lot of work but my biggest advice to you would be DO THE EXTRA CREDIT!! You can earn up to 30 points in extra credit, take advantage of this EARLY because it can save you. I learned a lot in this class but quite annoying work. You got this!
There is a lot of homework for this class that does not get graded but is still required to pass the quizzes. I felt like all my work was pointless cause it wasn't getting graded. That being said if you do the homework you will do great on the quizzes so it pays off there. Too much work for a 3 credit class but it's not hard at all. I recommend it
Willy's class is intense, but if you put in the work, it's manageable. The textbook he wrote is a bit vague, but the extra credit and unlimited quiz attempts help. I found unstuckstudy ai great for exam prep.
Lots of extra credit and him dropping the lowest grade of each type of assignment means that you can easily get an A. I saw people complaining about the study guide and the textbook, but it really isn't hard if you take the time to comprehend what is being said. Lots of compact work. Expect to study 15-20 hours a week if you want a high grade.
I am currently enrolled in this class. This class makes me want to CRASH OUT. If you accidentally miss an assignment, you must have proof of an emergency. The class is extremely intricate and too complicated to follow. So many tests. He uses his own textbook??? He requires you to use too many sources to get assignments done.
This professor was incredibly difficult to work with; he had little to no respect for his students, and he was horrid at being understanding towards certain situations. His study guides also rarely aligned with his actual tests.
Despite being a 3 credit course, this was one of the most work-heavy classes I've ever taken. Every week involved reading a chapter from one of the textbooks, 30 minutes of videos to watch, two study guides to complete, two assignments/quizzes and an assignment. TWICE. While it was definitely doable, it was a massive amount of work. Low taper fade.
Willy was a great teacher. As long as you do the study guides he gives you and watch the lectures you'll be just fine. The workload was a lot at first, but it gets easier to manage as the class goes on. I would recommend this class.
Hi, Professor Cushwa here. Below is the BIOL& 175 (Human Bio) grade distribution (A-F; 86 students total) from Winter Quarter 2025. Yes, it's a challenging course, but it is very possible to do well if you do the work and study: A: 43 (50%); B: 26 (30%); C: 7 (8%); D: 2 (2.5%) F: 8 (9.5%); 6 of the 8 stopped participating & didn't drop.
Hi, Professor Cushwa here. Below is the BIOL 167 (Human Genetics) grade distribution (A-F; 21 students total) from Winter Quarter 2025. Yes, it's a challenging course, but it is very possible to do well if you do the work and study: A: 8 (38%); B: 8 (38%); C: 3 (14%); D: 2 (10%); F: 0 (0%) I hope this information is helpful.
A lot for a 3 credit class. Some of his reading/video study guide questions would often be repeated or isn't necessary. He would give extra assignments every two weeks so prepare beforehand. Was very supportive and willing to help but his feedback wouldn't be clear or would ask even more questions.
My mother passed away the NIGHT before classes started. I emailed him stating I'd have trouble with the busy schedule but that I'd do my best to keep up in turning things on time. He emailed me back stating I needed to send proof, then compared it to when his parental died years ago before he taught a class. I am 18, not 30. How COULD I send proof?
Disorganized and confusing. Writes so many announcements that most of the time are irrelevant; making it hard to locate and know what is important.
If you are an average student I would suggest looking into a different course/professor. This course is very far from entry level. I'm stressed and my muscles are twitching from the amount of stress this biology course is giving me. SAVE YOURSELF.
Disorganized homework assignments. Feels like I'm reading a terms and conditions paper, and if I miss a small piece of information my whole grade goes down.
Hi, Professor Cushwa here. Below is the grade distribution (A-F) for BIOL 175 (Human Biology w/ Lab) from Spring Quarter 2025; n=90 students: A: 49 (54%); B: 26 (29%); C: 10 (11%); D: 2 (2.2%) F: 3 (3.3%); Students who follow instructions, effectively use provided resources, know & understand the specified info., and submit assessments do well.
Professor Cushwa cares about the learning process and student success. Heavy load, true to college level. If you ask questions you will get answers. If you demonstrate effort, he will respond. Professor Cushwa speaks truth and compassion and brings insight to the table that will better humanity. Take it and take him, he does not disappoint.
Your grade is based off your effort. I liked this class because he didn't have heavy graded midterms and finals like so many professors do, but instead lays out the class by making sure you are engaged in the material. As long as you stay on top of course work, and A is more than achievable.
I liked the class for the first few days but since I'm a running start student I didn't know how canvas worked and missed assignments and he didn't allow me to make them up. His canvas is SO disorganized and if you don't turn in an assignment on time there's no exceptions to turn it in late. Also LOTS of reading and LOTS of question answering.
Professor Cushwa's class is challenging, but he provides the necessary resources to understand the material. This includes video lectures, studymate activities, and study guides for students to fill out in order to fully grasp the content presented. He gives options for extra credit as well to make up for missed assignments. Challenging yet fun!
The layout of this class is a bit disorganized. Focuses primarily on quizzes with a few other assignments. Questions can be a little convoluted making it difficult to know what answer to put. Overall a fair educator but I expected more from this class.
