She teaches like she is at the University level, not a JC.
I though she was very good. The class is hard, but I thought she did a great job
Extremely demanding, does not listen to students whose views differ from her own. NOT recommended
Dr. Jackson was extremely demmanding, and at times very open with her opinions, but the class was fulfilling. She is an extrememly harsh grader, and you will hate yourself for taking the class. But it will be worth it in the end. Very tough professor!!
Dr. Jackson is a brilliant professor. A ridgid grader who expects a lot from her students but covers concepts very well. A great class
i loved this class, yeah it's hard if you don't do the reading or attend, so read and attend! got a lot of information from the class and loved the teaching style.
this is a HARD class! but it's also well taught by Dr. Jackson and the best class I've taken at Sierra! she does an awesome job and really knows the subject. we're lucky to even have a professor like Dr. Jackson teaching at a JC.
She thought she was the best, she's a black woman and lets you know it, she doesn't call on people who disagree with her only those who fan her own ideas. I hated every minute of this class, she was hard on everything, take Lucca she's good.
Dr Jackson is really hard tough teacher, she expects a lot out of you...
her class will be great for you-if you happen to agree with all of her very leftist, occasionally well-informed views. If you do not, then showing up every day and working hard will not get you an A. She will ignore you and insult your work.
Professor Jackson is a very tough teacher and does not like to listen to people whose views differ from her own. She wrote a letter to one girl in my class on her test telling her to no longer speak out in class, because her views were different!
More of a conversational teacher rather than a lecturer. I find it hard to take concise and informative notes. She is biased (left) no doubt. Class includes quizzes (hard if you don't read), 4 tests (scantron AND short answer), article and a separate book analysis(all left leaning choices).
didnt just lecture class, instead allowed open discussion on controversial issues. made her opinion obvious (with good information to back it up) but was also very open to all view points and gave everyone time to speak. if you are interested in this subject: take this class!!! you will love it!!!
Unless you don't mind being on the verge of a total meltdown, unlike me, stay as far away from this class as you can. The assignments are VERY difficult and you WILL hate it! That's how difficult the class really is.
This professor had commanding knowledge of the subject; she did tend to allow the lecture to degenerate into a current events discussions, and her political biases were obvious. Still, all her class was wonderful.
horrible, opinionated, agenda seeking, trust me, take anyone else.
Interesting but tough. She's a hard grader, but it is possible to get an A in the course if you work hard and tolerate the bias.
Great teacher! She is tough and demanding, but is very passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. I learned alot about politics and the way things work.
Very opinionated, always thinks she is right - just keep your mouth shut and write a good lengthy paper and you'll pass
Intimidating at first, but is a great teacher. She is biased toward the left, but if you can deal with that, you will learn a lot. Her assignments require some work, but are fairly straightforward. Very passionate about what she teaches, and is very nice in person. Just don't pi$$ her off.
Not a class to take if you want an easy A. Prof. Jackson is a demanding teacher that really wants the student to learn and comprehend the subject. Loved the small class discussions and how she MADE everyone speak and listened to their opinions whether they were knowlegable or not. Be prepared to work hard and talk a lot.
she is a very hard teacher, but is passionate about the subject. don't take her if u want an easy A.
It was statistically impossible for me to get a B in the class. But I happened to share a last name with a Democrat senator, & in my papers, had her convinced that I was a radical Liberal (I'm actually very conservative). And sure enough, I got a B in the class. I recommend this class to liberals who are borderline Socialist. AND NO ONE ELSE.
"statistically impossible to get a 'B'...I'm conservative." Gee, I'm conservative, too, and I got an A. Sure, she makes you work for your grade, LIKE ALL PROFESSORS SHOULD! And biased? B.S.! Grow up already!
She will get your blood moving even if you disagree with her. She can be a little nasty but she's definitly keeps you awake and interested. TAKE HER CLASS!!!!
I'm a liberal...but she's one of those people who pushes their agenda in class. Total cliched radical "liberal teacher" who has an agenda and her curriculm reflects it. I'm talking overwhelming bias. Repeat what she wants you to say or get a bad grade.
Very controversial instructor! Thows the facts at you, and lets you deal with it. Ive seen people walk out mid lecture do to the sensitive topics she hits on. I dont think shes biased, shes just blunt, and expects her students to use thier brains and think outside their societal programming. If youre willing to "think outside the box," take her.
sickening liberal bias. I mean it's REDICULOUS how biased this woman is. I had to sit through class gritting my teeth and clenching my fists thinking about my family in the military and friends in Iraq and what they would think of this excrement. Avoid this teacher if you are anything other than a communist.
I think that this woman loves to hear herself think, all she does is talk about her opinions. It is a little annoying. I am taking this class to know more about the government. Not about her opinions of it!
she is a ****, she does not help you when you need help talks so fast and then says do you all understand that, i guess if you want a teacher to push you and to make you work hard and read ever little part of the book then this your person, she also goes on and on and nothin and hopes you know what she is talking about
Very "in your face". Passionate yet very oppinionated. Read every chapter and prepare for every test.
If you want easy, take someone else. Very detail oriented & hard tests. Lots of work: article & book analyses, almost-weekly quizzes. Class is dynamic & interesting & you'll learn a lot. Yes, she's a liberal, but so what? Everyone is something. She's respectful of student opinions, but expects you to think it through.
She doesn't care about her students personally. When I arrived three minutes late to class with a completed take-home test that was due that day, I tried to hurriedly fill out the scantron form before turning it in. She refused to take it. Told me I got an F for being "unprepared." All because I had forgotton to fill out the form before coming in.
HORRIBLE!!! DO NOT TAKE! She is EXTREMLY loud, and annoying. She doesnt care about hurting your feelings and leaving you to fail. Avoid at all cost!!!
Jackson is great. Do not take her class if you are a freshmen. If you did not like her class it is most likely because you were not mature enough to be prepared for class. She will shoot your @$$ down if you do not have your facts in order. This is not High School. Only informed opinions count. This straight ticket republican and earned a 96%.
Dont take. She shouldnt be allowed to teach at all! She is mean and will fail you at any cost!
This was my hardest class so far. Full of writing and reading assignments. Jackson is very clear about what she wants and strict about deadlines. Take her if you want a challenge, and have enough spare time. She lectures a lot, but she gives you study guides for your exams. She is very passionate about what she teaches.
She is an amazing professor! I've never had a professor so passionate about what they teach. Her passion for politics is wonderful; she has a wealth of knowledge and shares every bit of it. She is not a "hard" teacher because she is an excellent. I highly recommend professor Jackson.
she is communist, and if you prove her wrong with factual evedence or shoot holes in her arguments she avoids your questions. the class teaches you very little about politics of the developing world, it is more about the social problems facilitated by capitalist society upon the global south, should not be polisci take Deaver!
She is the worst teacher I have ever encountered. I took this class during the summer with Deaver and received a D so I had to retake it. I learned a lot from Deaver but everything you learn from Jackson comes from her own point of view! I am a liberal and hate people that give my side a bad rap. She is one of those people. She took 15 points o
I thought I could handle her class. Im a poli sci major, but I had to drop her class because I would have had a C and I cant have that for the schools Im transferring to. Shes so biased it makes me sick, very liberal. I consider myself liberal and even I was uncomfortable in her class. Only gives good grades to those who agree 110% with her.
NOT FUN! most of her lectures are her own opinions. she has lots of quizzes and they're all from the readings. you have 2 books for homework reading, and then you have a 500-page book which you have to write an analysis on, plus a documentary analysis! the tests were hard. my classmate who is a woman in her 40's had trouble with it! don't take!!!!!
WORST TEACHER............ DON"T TAKE HER CLASS<<<<<<
Extremely Liberal. Nothing but her rederick and teaches her opinion rahter than actual facts. Also very worked up. Can be offensive at times. I don't reccomend this calss unless your a complete tree-hugger!!
Tough but good
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS! By far the worst teacher I have EVER had. You cant miss 1 day of class even if you are sick throwing up, she wont even let you make up the quiz for the day. You cant question her about anything or she will get defensive and yell at you. Too much HW and hard quizzes. She should be fired. Dont take this class you will regret it
the absolute WORST TEACHER! i have ever ever ever had in my entire life. i usually get along with all teachers but this wicked witch will ruin your life
Not only the worst teacher I have ever had, the worst person I have ever met. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The devil walking on earth
Man this teacher is so tough. you have to be into government if youre going to survive this teacher. you have to be talkative and reading is a must. Beware of the big essays she assigns!!
i have to agree with others worst teacher ever!do no take her!!!!!there is alot of quizzes and alot of reading!
She gives A LOT of quizzes and they were all hard. I once spent 6 hours studying for one of them and got a 50%. SHE WAS TOUGH, BUT AT THE SAME TIME IT FORCES YOU TO LEARN MORE THAN YOU WOULD HAVE OTHERWISE. I would rather work hard than not learn anything at all. I was able to get a B... but with A LOT of hard work!
She is incredibly left-wing, which I suppose is to be expected from a college professor, but what I found insane was that she is completely unaware of her own biases, as if her opinion is the universal truth. Also visibly hostile toward anyone who doesn't agree with her perception of things. I've never met such an agenda-pusher in my life. UGH!
Horrible teacher! Just horrible! She is such a hypocrite! She tells us that we are not going to talk about political sides it's all about the government and how it works when she tells us all about what she thinks is best. If she doesn't want to here my crap, I don't want to hear hers.
I wish I had never taken this class. It will destroy your GPA. You can study all you want and you will will not make it.
She is the most terrible teacher I have ever had! I graduated High School with a 3.86 GPA and got a D- in this class. She will fail you at any cost!! She won't help you if you ask for it and she told me to pick between Wrestling and class and then come back and talk to her.
She is a terrible teacher!!!!! You get like a quiz a week and the questions are subjective or just plain stupid!!! She once asked if the Holocaust was heavily studied in America. What kind of question is that!!!! The answer is HER OPINION!!!! Also if you disagree with her she will not recognize that you are there. I once had my hand up for 20 min!!
Wow, this class was crazy. I felt like she tried to cover way too much and assigned alot more reading than I had time for. I really like her as a person and teacher but she sets the bar pretty high and I think that catches most folks off guard... welcome to college. If you can put in the time and do the reading, you should do fine though.
Worst class ever. Teacher is cruel, mean, and cold. Does not care about your success at all and will try to fail you. Avoid at all costs.
she was a good person hard teacher. she gave a lot of work but if u pay attention and do what she says you cant fail. she is very hard but good for students who want to learn a lot.
Dr. Jacksons class is not one I would recommend to a brand new College student. Especially online. She is not willing to help much what so ever, wont let you make things up if you're having computer trouble. Reading is absolutely everything for her classes, so make sure you have the books. She is very harsh.
Mrs.Jackson is a very nice lady, but, as a teacher she can be very strict. Her class is very demanding of your time so don't miss her classes and don't miss any reading. You also have to listen very clearly what she says or she will not accept your work, she is very specific about what she wants. Don't take if you don't your you politics!!
Extremly tough grader, I don't recomend if you have more than two classes. Requires a lot of attention via db posts, reading and videos. Almost no sympathy for computer issues even if it is truly valid. Her class is top priority and your not free to respond as you have interpreted the material, she wants to hear only the answers she has gleaned.
WOW!!! Never had such a harder time trying to learn a subject. Very difficult course due to immense course load, all spread out not very clear. Obvious that she thinks very highly of herself. Needs to be in politics rather than teach it.
if you are a Poli Sci major and want to learn about politics take her. she teaches the class to make you think and force you to learn not an easy A, but if u can pass her class get an a in her class you will do well anywhere
I loved Prof. Jackson's Women in PolSci world view class!! She is very organized, clearly communicates her expectations, and is an amazing teacher. She requires students to think and work for their grade. I learned so much!! I definitely recommend taking her classes!
Prof. Jackson is an excellent teacher. She is very clear in her lectures and assignments. As long as the student is willing to learn and keep up with the assignments, they will earn an A in the class. Students need to have good organization skills. Most students who complained were just disorganized and looking for someone to blame.
Everyday the class would sit and listen to her liberal bs. got really old. only pushed her views on us. not evenly showing both sides. its a shame because the class seemed very interesting. now it just proves my right stance on where i stand. she told us she went on here and read these things and liked the bad things people would write. there ya go
One of the worst teachers I've had at Sierra College. Very biased. If she doesn't agree with your opinion you will have a hard time passing. Also you will have a ton of reading and have to incorporate lots of quotes into your papers, or you will get a bod grade.
To pass her class you need to read the books and ignore what she talks about in class because she talks about current events and pushes only her views on students as if there is no other way. She constantly talks about her Jamaican heritage and the countries she has traveled.. My high school AP Gov. teacher was 1000 times better than her.
Pols 1 with her was somewhat difficult but its a doable A, Lots of Extra credit. Pols 2 Supper easy just read and study her study guide. people who fail her classes just don't belong at any learning institution
She is a great teacher, but she is rather difficult. The class has a LOT of reading, but if you stay focused it's fine. Also, she gives two huge essays which are very time intensive and difficult. If you want an easy A, dont take her. But if you want to learn, she's great.
Prof. Jackson expects a lot out of her students. This class changed the way I process world news. VERY useful. I would recommend taking this class during a semester with a lighter course load though.
Dr. Jackson is crazy passionate about Poli Sci. She's very outspoken about her political opinions and loves debate and conversation in class. If that bugs you, try to look past it because she has a lot of great insight to share. Her class gave me new perspective on government and US history.
She is the closest thing to a REAL UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR that most of these students will ever see. The students that whine about her being hard are just used to being coddled by past teachers. You can use this class as a measure of how you will fair in a 4 year university.
She has a burning passion for all things politics and her class is definitely a majors class. Not easy at all. It's a heavy textbook class and her style of lecture is rather haphazard so doing well is dependent on your willingness to go above and beyond. She grades fairly to those who show effort but won't hesitate to flunk you. No easy A here.
Amazing. This class is alive, inspiring and lot's of necessary work inorder to fully learn. This class is why some people move on to do big things in their lives. Complaints are from lazy students, period. Hard class for students who don't know how to do their work with integrity. This prof. is encredibly intelligent.
She is a difficult teacher but she's super passionate about what she's teaching and wants people to learn. All you have to do is speak with her after class, read everything assigned and do the extra credit and you'll be fine. People who say she's difficult just aren't willing to put in any effort. I loved her class.
The best class I've taken at Sierra. She is a real university level prof and is passionate about her work. Reading is a MUST in getting an A in her class. If you don't care about politics, this class is NOT for you. Quizzes are easy. Exams are medium dificulty. Attendence is important. She will keep class interesting, shows The Daily Show, etc. =)
Probably the toughest professor I have had. She always gets off topic and talks about current. Its best not to listen to lectures and just read the textbook because thats all the quizzes are on. She hates if you ask her questions if you missed class, like where notes are located. I dreaded going to her class. I would recommend a diff professor.
Dr. Jackson is extremely nice and so passionate about what she does. That being said, I would not recommend her as a teacher. She loves what she does and is EXTREMELY intelligent but expects that everyone knows everything she does. Super nice and upbeat but I'm an A student with a C because I can't keep up with her jumping all over the place
She is a really knowledgeable teacher and knows her subject like the back of her hand, but she is liberally biased and forces her opinion on you. The essays she has you write are not easy to do and she expects nothing but the best. She really isn't suited for teaching and would be better off as a political activist because she is so passionate.
She's very passionate and loves to hear from the class. Personally I couldn't grasp her teaching style because it's all over the place. She's very nice just not for me.
This class is for student who want to learn about history and politics. Effort is required and lazy students will fail. If u can't handle this class, u should not be in school, period. I don't always agree w/her, but she never faults me for it at all.
ONLINE- A fair Professor, helpful. A lot of reading, respond to emails! But, this is the hardes class I've ever taken! Im not a dummy, it is hard! The tests are hard and they are big, your grade will be effected by them, so do well!
I got a low B in this class, but I dont think that I would be able to do that again. If you take this course with Dr. Jackson, you will need to not have a political opinion, unless your views line up on the left, FAR left. Very smart lady, however her opinions tend to get in the way during the course.
Excellent professor. She is clear, expects students to do their work well, and she does not push her political views at all. I never saw that happen once (this is my second class w/her). Not a class for lazy students.
I could not approach her with any questions because she would just get mad and tell me all the answers are in the readings or syllabus. Not very helpful. However, the quizzes are not very hard, and the tests are to too crazy either. If you want to take her, be ready to listen to her political views for a solid hour each class.
unless you love socialism don't take this class she is insane and will yell at you for having another view. you are always wrong and she is always right. theres lots of better teachers at this school, DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!
The material in this class is VERY interesting, but on a personal level, Dr. Jackson is difficult. If you do the assigned readings, there is no reason you should fail. However, she is not helpful and is rude when you ask questions. Also, a lot of her lectures/tests are not clear, with incomplete sentences, thoughts, etc and misspelled words.
Love, love, loved her class and I highly recommend Dr.J because she is good professor. Class material: eye-opening. Exams r easy if u study. Be prepared to back up your argument in class, and participate or she will call on you to give an opinion. Loved this class!!
If you want a professor that is passionate about what she does then Dr. Jackson is your kind of teacher. I personally loved her class but then again I'm a travel enthusiast and a democratic so I didn't mind her tangents (which are fairly often) about her world travels or her political views. Her class is really interesting but prepared to work.
Jackson's class is difficult and attendance is mandatory as she gives regular "pop" quizzes. She is passionate, but polarizing. Her travels are interesting, but she deviates from the topic which can be frustrating when it comes to tests. Be prepared to study and pay close attention during class.
Amazing. By far the best class I have ever taken. Dr. Jackson is really helpful and as long as you read the books there is no reason you should do bad on the tests. She keeps things interesting and relates things from the books to actual current events. Definitely take her class it's the best!
1st: she's an extremely intelligent woman. Probably the smartest professor I've taken. However, I feel as if she tries to keep grades within a D to B range so she doesn't look too hard or easy. I feel like I did A work all semester (both essays were A's), but quizzes and test multiple choice questions were intended to trick you to keep scores down.
Read your favorite left-wing blog and you will learn more than in here. While not a difficult class, be prepared to listen to her pontificate and rant about her political views instead of teach the class. If you are conservative, don't express it. 30 percent of your grade depends on the rapport you have with her. She is nice, and will help you.
Wow. Good luck learning any objective information. Be prepared for lots of ranting and embarrassment if you do not know an answer. There are 10 quizzes which are mostly straight from the books. 3 Exams, and an essay. Overall, I was not pleased with her teaching style and would have much rather been in a class where my opinions/thoughts were valued.
Dr. Jackson is passionate about politics for sure. Makes her own political views very apparent and I could see how a person with opposing views would have a hard time in her class, but backs her arguments. Quizzes straight from the review questions at the end of chapters. Unless you have a problem remembering what you read, it's easy.
Do not take. Lecture has nothing to do with test or quiz material. Her "lectures" are just rants. When she pulls up a 30 page slide, she will cover 1 or 2 slides in a class period because she gets distracted. Very repetitive, loud, and unpleasant. She is obviously a very intelligent woman, however it does not make the class any more tolerable.
Pro Jackson is a very tough teacher. She is an incredibly passionate one though about political science. It was a very course with a great deal of bookwork. She is an extremely nice woman and very intelligent but if you want an easy a, I'd suggest looking elsewhere.
Very passionate but is not a great teacher. She has strong political views and gets off topic very easy during lectures. Do not take her class if you are looking for an easy grade.
Confusing at times & unpredictable. Syllabus doesn't always correspond with her teaching. Her lectures can seem a bit repetitive & sometimes focus more on culture or her opinion, rather than structures of government. The tests and quizzes require remembering random facts instead of subjective knowledge.
If you must take this course, make sure to read the entire text prior to the start of the course. There are quizzes every week, 3 exams, and one heavy paper. The exams are extremely hard. The quizzes are ok if you read the chapter you will do fine.
I loved Dr. Jackson! She is very knowledgeable and passionate about politics. Particularly loved her lessons on Rwanda and South Korea. Make sure to read the book and follow the syllabus, especially when it comes to the final research paper! Don't be afraid to ask questions or ask for clarifications on anything.
Not enough room to say everything- she's confusingunfocusedhard to hear, very liberal and won't give ground for "good discourse", asks for input but doesn't let you talk, self-importance galore (quotes herself!), 14pt deductions on quizzes, degrading towards class and treats students like children. By far one of the worst profs I've ever had!
She is very passionate about political science. To be successful you must: read and memorize every single word and concept out of the text book, any handouts , postings on canvas, and any current political issues internationally. very unclear in lectures, grading and expectations. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU ARE A POLITICAL SCIENCE MAJOR!!!!
Dr. Jackson expects you to do what she asks. Read her lectures, textbooks + articles, and watch videos. DB posts: answer questions with proper English sentence structure and refrain from informal texting style. DB reply's: say something informative and intelligent, not 'good job'. Exam study guides match exam well; type answers ahead and no prob.
If you're an A student, expect a B, and expect to work your hardest for that B. Weekly pop quizzes are random, and a lot of the time do not relate to what has been lectured on. Her lectures differ from what the book says, and her tests differ from both. Tests will require you to remember very minor details, that have nothing to do with government.
Dr. Jackson is very smart. There is reading that is accompanied by quizzes, but her class is as close you get to a university setting. She will help if you ask for it. Extra credit opportunities available if you write a basic reflection paper on a political event you attend. Not an easy A, but you shouldn't get a D or a C in here either.
Her grading is not fair, I received a 53%, but she was nice and gave me a D at the end. She has a great personality, if you are not taking it for credit then I would recommend this class. You will learn a lot about politics. It was definitely not a boring class, it was interesting. She is in a lot of clubs, very involved with students, nice woman.
Dr. Jackson is a very intelligent and engaging person. My critique is more with her course material. I was looking forward to a global perspective on women in politics, her course focuses almost solely on West Africa. In addition, her lecture material is very outdated and the reading and discussion is quite repetitive.
Dr. J is a great teacher, you can tell that she is really passionate about political science. She is very serious about her class and she expects every student to do their part and show up to class everyday. This is not an easy A or even an easy B for that matter. If you study a lot and take the class seriously you should do just fine.
Jackson was probably the worst teacher I took at sierra. EXTREMELY REPETITIVE & DISORGANIZED. It was supposed to be a US gov class, but she repeated the same points on civil rights, values, socialization process... for the ENTIRE SEMESTER. Dramatic & loud, worst lectures, v unclear. Easy to pass by reading, but her style is incredibly ineffective
Wouldn't bother going to class often, it's the same unorganized lecture and she rarely takes roll. She means well but is really off topic on the entire course, powerpoints are worthless, she's very repetitive, assignment criteria and grading is unclear and scattered (like her). Would recommend avoiding at all costs if you want to learn about US gov
She is a teacher that truly demonstrates her opinion throughout the class which can get in the way of your enjoyment of the subject matter. The class is not extremely difficult, more time consuming than anything. The book is necessary and you must follow the reading schedule even if she does not. Definitely make sure you always review notes.
Been coming here two years, currently in this class right now. lectures are long and she swears she wants us to ask questions but looks straight at me and moves on. However this one black kid has a tiny irrelevant statement and she has stopped everything and is literally having private one on one time in front of all of us right now.
I had high hopes for this class hearing that she had her PhD in Political Science. Unfortunately, she spends the semester obsessing over African American civil rights. "Access to education" and "socialization" will be drilled into your head every single class meeting, it gets ridiculous. Skip her and go with a professor who will teach the course
Nice professor, she really cares about her students. All I can say is though that if you are Free Thinker and find Politics to be a hostile subject, tread carefully, although avoid if you can help it.
Dr. Jackson is a very passionate professor! The main focus in political science 1 is learning about African-American history. I was disappointed that I did not learn about political science which is what I thought I signed up for, maybe not. She is not as bad as everyone says though. Twelve reading quizzes, two of which are dropped, three exams, an
This is the worst teacher I have ever had, I would recommend her to no one. Doesn't teach a dang thing about politics and constantly rambles on about nothing pertaining the test or text book. It is impossible to take a test and get a good grade because she literally teaches you nothing. Dont bother going to class, because it does no good.
Teaches nothing. Rambles on about personal ideologies and nothingness the entire duration of the class. Never actually starts her lectures. Never Makes it past announcements. Rabbit Trailing is an understatement. Going to class is not helpful. Better off teaching yourself.
If you have a chance to take a class with Dr. Jackson you owe it to yourself. She will likely challenge your views of the world in the best way, with logic. She is icredibly intelligent and you will leave her class with a solid foundation for beginning to understand the complexities of politics. Online quizzes + 4 tests + book analysis. Great prof!
Dr. J is an awesome teacher! You will learn a ton! She expects you to do your reading prior to class and come prepared to class ready to participate. Her lectures may or may not relate directly to the material you are on at that point, but it all ties in and connects in the end. Engage, ditch your expectations, and you will be a happy student!
2nd to last semester here and I have to get this lady, she doesn't lecture about anything, literally nothing, but the tests are the hardest tests ive taken at this school so far. Im completely serious when i mean she lectures about nothing, ive never felt like my time has been wasted more than by this lady.
Not my favorite teacher. She tends to go off on a tangent and I never feel like we cover enough. She's a great person, but as far as teachers go, she's not the best. Her tests are based off of stuff she "lectures" about. But really she never covers everything in nearly enough detail for what is required on exams.
If you don't agree with her views, don't even bother taking this class you will be at a major disadvantage. If you challenge her, she will come back at you with her own facts and embarrass you in front of the class. I don't care to hear about her own political opinions, I just want to learn, which is hard with this teacher.
This instructor is by far the most awful I have had in my whole education career. She does not teach and rambles on about her political beliefs. Do not take this class if you are conservative. It is honestly difficult to sit through a whole class. What is on the tests and quizzes is hardly ever discussed in class, you have to teach yourself.
I have had Dr.J 3 times b/c she is the only professor who teaches specific classes needed for my major. I would not take her if given a CHOICE. If your major isn't polisci, or if it is; try your best to find another professor. She gives a lot of busy work, yet manages not to teach much at all because her lectures hardly go anywhere.
She is very scattered, most lectures deviate into personal stories and opinions so therefore, students are forced to self-teach. Makes you do a lot for very little in return, and talks down to you if you do not meet her standards. She would grade my online class assignments, based off of my attendance in a separate class. I would not recommend.
By far the worst teacher ever. She would basically rant about whatever she felt like in class to such she calls " third dimensional thought" I was never prepared for any test, she would start out the day with a plan but basically rant about personal beilifs. she also grades based on how much she likes you rather than the product you give her
First off I'm liberal, but that doesn't mean I take a class so I can hear ones biased beliefs. After seeing she had a PHD in the subject I was excited , but that quickly faltered. classes have zero structure and no effort is put into her "lectures" she basically rants in class and then gives amazing difficult tests full of things she never covered
Do not take a class with her! Her grading criteria is completely capricious, her test questions are incredibly unclear and delusive, her lectures are so riddled with errors it's laughable. A thoroughly callow, unprofessional and unintelligent professor, her continued employment is baffling.
I thought an online class would be easy enough to handle. I was wrong. it was my hardest class that semester and I was constantly studying for the weekly discussion boards. For an online class, it was very heavy material with an avg 2 articles 3 chptrs + 1video to review each week, and then discuss. If you aren't dedicated, dont take this course
Had Professor Jackson for Pols1 my first semester and Pols2 this past semester. I wouldn't take her again if I could help it, but as a poly sci major I keep getting stuck with her. She's nice but I am not a fan of her teaching style. She starts class talking about current events and gets really side tracked so some days we don't get to the lecture.
Well. Can we just take a minute to express how opinionated she is...? I don't think I've had a single class this semester where we have spoken about ANYTHING in the text books she makes you buy. She just gives you a syllabus that tells you what to read & when your quizzes are but the entirety of class is spent listening to irrelevant information.
Took it as a requirement for polisci major. Her lectures always somehow ended up on the topic of the infringement of African American rights. The only problem with that is that it has little to no relevance to the course. She has a PHD, yet she's teaching at a community college, oh how ironic.
Probably one of the worst professors I have ever had. She would mainly go off topic during discussions and lectures, and cover things on her test that she never even talked about. She's very self-consumed and gloats a lot. She thinks she's obviously above teaching Community College so doesn't even try
Wish I was able to give a lower score. I did not learn a single thing in the class because all of her "lectures" are just rants. The tests/quizzes DO NOT represent anything that is lectured on, it is just random information that she thinks should be common knowledge. Very hard class, and the worst professor. WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU BACK OUT NOW.
Worst professor at Sierra College. Avoid her if possible. If you can't just show up and don't listen the words she says it's just rants and nothing relative to the class , tests, or quizzes. 2 big essays and tests are very difficult because no info was given during lectures. Be ready to learn all on your own.
The ratemyprofessor reviews TERRIFIED me of her. Yet taking her class wasn't awful. Sure, she ranted, is very opinionated, has this belief that she is bestowing this wonderful knowledge on you, but she wasn't the harshest grader. Her quizzes are easy but exams are HARD. Only take her if you have to, but you can still do fine if you self teach.
So so awful. Expects a lot, doesn't provide lectures for online classes, lecture "notes" (more like bulletpoints) are no help at all. Doesn't teach much about government, it's more like an African-American history class. If you don't hold the same views as her she will grade you poorly and will not provide factual reasoning for why you are wrong
One of the best professors I have had the honor of learning from. I took her Women and Global Politics class at Sierra in the Spring of 2017. She is the real deal when it comes to knowing her stuff and passing on her knowledge. I learned a lot from this class and it inspired me to switch majors from Political Science to Women's Studies. Love her!
Naturally in a professional learning environment you would expect an unbias, engaging and informative instructor, Winsome Jackson does not embody these qualities. What she is good at is saying 4 key phrases over and over and making sure that YOU feel bad for not being engaged in her unengaging lectures. 0/10, would not vote again.
If youre looking for a challenging course, youve found it! There is a weekly discussion board(pay attention to the due dates)! The course is lecture heavy & based upon the book, This Child Will Be Great by Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, DO NOT SLACK OFF, I started w/ a C-, ended w/ a B, take her course seriously, learned a lot about women in politics.
Dr. J is a good professor, she knows her stuff and is good at embedding knowledge into students through her very long lectures. She talks A LOT so don't feel like you have to remember every word she says because you will notice that she says the important things over and over again. Not that hard of a class and not too much homework is given.
Very knowledgeable, but doesn't stay focused AT ALL during lectures and has super specific quiz/exam questions which she barely glosses over in class, yet expects you to know. Read your textbook and study her lectures closely, and pay attention specific dates/facts. Doesn't stay on syllabus schedule. Only take her class if you have to!
If political science doesn't interest you at all, I agree, take another professor. The phrases she repeats have to do w/ government's relationship w/ values, she gets off topic because she applies her lectures to things happening in real time; I found her classes to be valuable and meaningful. She does expect some degree of effort and competence.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. If you are a Political Science Major and you HAVE TO take this, then yeah take the course. She does not really teach, she literally just says whats on the powerpoint. She does not elaborate much at all and leaves the students confused. When you ask her questions she seems flustered and expects you to know the information.
She is a really amazing person and I did like her class. Though for the tests I taught myself everything, the lectures were scattered, the quizzes were hard to do well on, and I felt rushed the whole year.
I absolutely loved Dr. J! She is not only a great educator but her passion for what she does is contagious. I am taking another one of her classes this summer and I can't wait to see what she has in store for the class. If you respect her, listen, and put in effort you should pass.
Dr. Jackson's PoliSci course was the first political science course I'd ever taken. I'd also never taken an online course. The weekly discussion board posts allow your mind to expand and make connections. The readings, though abundant, were informative. There will be a few surprise questions on her quizzes from time to time. Overall great teacher!
Currently taking her class. I love politics but she has made me hate it. She cannot answer "hard" questions correctly and gets flustered when she tries. Lectures have become incoherent rants, tbh. First week of class she bragged about how much students love her and how great she is. Would not recommend. Grading isn't too hard, though.
Currently taking her Poly Sci 2 class, here's a thought don't. The first day the syllabus given was messy, disorganized had a thousand reading materials and websites all clumped together. Her lecture technique is interesting, often side barred and weeks behind from the syllabus plan. The assignments she does give are vague. Would not recommend.
I think Dr. Jackson is a wonderful person and very knowledgeable. Shes passionate about what she does and its contagious. I really like her as a person, however I didnt like her class. I felt super lost the whole time and it seemed that you needed to have a ton of previous knowledge about politics to keep up. I wouldnt recommend unless u have to
Try to avoid this class if possible. Lectures are scattered and rely more on political opinion/rants than fact. Two papers with unclear directions, and grading is based on political alignment. Two tests that did not follow lecture material or the syllabus. I feel extremely unprepared to transfer to a UC school because the material was so scattered
Overall, the class wasn't that difficult but the discussion board posts every week do take time because of all of the reading and information required to answer the questions well enough for her to like. There's a midterm and final which follow the study guide so it's easy to prepare in advance! I learned a ton of information & I enjoyed the class!
Well I loved Professor Jackson as a person and she was very passionate and hard working. Her class however was very disorganized and she spent so much time lecturing on her own personal experience(and sometimes things that werent true) that we didnt get to a huge portion of the material. Papers and tests were pretty straight forward
Currently enrolled in an introductory government class with Professor Jackson or as she prefers "Dr.J". I've found it very difficult to follow this class as the lectures don't follow the structure that was laid out at the in her syllabus. Jackson seems far too politically biased and it shows during coverage of current events during lectures.
Well.... she's okay..... Her Lectures are a bit, scattered and she does have alot AND I MEAN ALOT of Opinions BUT.... The Tests and Quizzes are from the book, and she'll help you, if you ask for it....
Tough grader, discussion boards require a lot of participation and criteria but it was helpful cause it pushed me for better.
Winsome is an incredible person and teacher. She embodies the virtues of Evidentialism, Rationalism, Logic, Empiricism, and true epistemological ways of deriving information. If you had to pinpoint her bias I'd assume she leans left like many in academia, but this is because of her person and is therefore cultural, not political in bias. 11/10 :)
I started out this course extremely weary of Dr. Jackson. However, throughout the semester she started to grow on me and I really enjoyed this class. It was important to attend classes to avoid missing information about essays and exams. I truly learned a lot in this class and was able to broaden my horizon with new and different viewpoints.
I did enjoy the class and Dr. J is very knowledgeable, communicates well, and gives hints to what will be on the tests. BUT I don't think she is a teacher that believes in giving anyone an "A". She would mark me down points without feedback on the assignment. She expects you to go above and beyond her requirements and still won't give you an A.
Dr. Jackson's class was one of a few classes that I learned the most from. Her slide shows were easy to follow and but there is lots of reading. I took the 8-week course online and it was hard in the sense that a lot of time has to be put in. I studied for hours barely scraped by with an A. She grades some assignments without feedback.
Professor Jackson was a really fun professor to have, I had expected to have a lot of personal politics shoved down my throat but that wasn't really the case, she encouraged us to simply participate. Most of the course is reviewing the foundations of our political systems and how to be an active participant in these systems.
This class was not only inspiring due to the material we read but it was also inspiring by the way in which it was taught. Dr. J does an amazing job of leading you through the material. Her study guides are reflective of what is on the test. If you do the work and put in the time an A can easily be achieved. However, critical thinking is required.
She makes you work for it. Dr. J is very understanding person. She is a fine grader. 2 long paper and quizes based on the lecture videos. Discussion boards are easy. Quiz and exams are fairly medium difficult
No. Just no. Took this class online and it made me change my major from Political Science to a different one. Syllabus is confusing and the information she gives is not straight forward. Shes passionate about what she does though.
Amazing class! It was pretty difficult, but I learned a lot. The projects aren't too hard, they're just a lot of writing but super informative.
She clearly states what she wants you to do in her Discussion Boards. So far, the class is great and requires a lot of work. I have learned so much and it's only week 4.
Difficult
Dr. J's class is so informational and inspiring. This might be the most amount of work I've ever had to do in my life and I loved almost every second of it! Super challenging but worth it! So many chapters to read, as well as lectures, documentaries, videos, and links. Only thing I have to complain about is that you'll never see her comments...
The course set up is so confusing. She mixes expectations for assignments in with the syllabus and the submission page, and will NOT provide help when messaged. I took this class as a Psych major looking to branch out, and this course heavily pushed me away from Political Science. I had less work in biology and calculus than I have in this course.
Howard Zinns on her syllabus. If you critique any of the assigned material she grades you down. In my case I said a movie didn't have enough evidence to be persuasive. She also literally out of nowhere accused me of not accepting the results of the election. Also, she repeatedly insists that a hegemony is the ultimate evil. She seems nice though
Jackson is great, lectures each week through pages, make sure to take detailed notes. She offers a few extra credit opportunities. TAKE THEM! I wish I had :/ Take advantage of her office hours, she wants you to succeed.
If you want to have a good teacher dont take this class. The comparison to other teachers is night and day. I repeat dont take her class unless you have to.
I am going to note that I am an overachiever. The textbook and lectures materials will be right on the test. Be sure to really take good, specific notes for her exams. There's two documentary analysis papers you will write, and if she provides you a link to websites to use - USE THEM (she is expecting). Highly recommend using stuff from her lecture
I am currently a senior at UCLA but I had to come back and leave this review because her class was so awful. Without a doubt she is the worst teacher I have ever had. Dont let my A in her class fool you. I have never had to work so hard in my life. She is extremely biased but use that to your advantage when writing papers.
