he will kill your gpa
Complete waste of time. Like honestly pointless to go to class. Talks about random things that do not correlate with the materials he tells us to buy, high school english was actually better then this course, Very disappointing, take the course and you guys will see how horrible it is
Horrible! If you CAN"T speak or write english you will get a good grade because he will mark you very easy. Doesn't teach at all and if you ask him a question about formating or something else he should be teaching he will just laugh in your face. All he does is tell random stories. You will learn nothing!! Run away and run FAST!!!!!!!
The best English Prof. ever.
Wisdom is the best!!
Super nice guys with a heart of gold, the kindest person i have ever met. The course it self was not the most exciting although it is the material and not the person that i think people seem to find a problem with.
horrible prof. It was useless to go to his class.
the worst professor i ever seen!
trust me,you will learn nothing in the class!
Class avg 2.3 (C+, no curve). Classes are absolutely useless and you lose points for skipping even with good excuses (medical). Tells you what to do for essays after getting them back. Very lazy prof and marks your essays during class while watching films at the same time.
A totally useless teacher, whose lectures only involved pointing out the obvious and borderline offensive comments. Run the other way, I beg of you.
Nice guy, bad professor. I never go to the class, and before that, I've never been one to skip. I used to like english, now its my most hated subject. I used to be confident in my essay writing skills, not anymore. He does not go over the works studied in class, not even a little bit. First semester of university, this class ruined it.
Terrible professor, worst educator I've ever had. Makes subjective comments, is rude and arrogant. Knows nothing about what he's talking about. Do anything you can to NOT be in his class.
Gets off topic every class. Pop quizzes every other class. Foreigners that barely speak English receive better marks because he cannot speak English himself. All he cares about is GHANA when the course is on literature at a GLOBAL perspective. RUN AWAY NOW!!
Very rude and arrogant, not helpful at all. Will tell you what he is looking for after things are handed in. His marking is extremely tough. Even attending every class does not help with your grade.
Absolutely atrocious. His essay comments are useless and you can never give him what he wants. The reading material is some of the worst I have ever read. The final is ridiculously impossible and there are pop quizzes ALL THE TIME. Get out now, even if it means not taking English this semester. Your GPA will thank you.
I got a full letter grade bellow ALL of my other classes even the most difficult and demanding! Nothing new to learn in this class. I've had MUCH better highschool classes. A killer of brain cells and gpa. If you want to take this class take it with another prof!
This guy is somewhat nice but is a horrible prof! He provided no feedback on our writing, and we did not discuss how to write an essay until the very last day of class! Kids who could barely speak english got better marks than kids who have been good at english their whole life. I got 95% on my English 30 diploma and a D+ in ENGL 111 with Wisdom!
If Wisdom likes you, you'll get tons of positive feedback and make you feel like gold in front of the class. If he doesn't, he will make fun of you, also in front of the class. He is completely unhelpful, useless at teaching, and loves to hear himself talk. That said, this class is still a lot of fun. He doesn't completely ruin it.
I found him very confusing and contradictive. He was our TA for the writing portion of the lecture yet he never consulted with the Prof on what we were studying. Overall I felt attending his class a waste of time.
Going to his class was the best part of my day. It is a very interactive class. I found it was my best english class since high school. He is not clear on some things but if you try and ask questions you'll get a good mark.
This class is supossed to be Literature in Global persepctive but its more like an African literature class. He's a nice guy but a pretty crappy prof.
Honestly the nicest prof I've ever met, and very knowledgeable and interested in his subject. Being in his class and not getting to know him is honestly a wasted opportunity. Students who think he marks too hard are honestly still in a highschool pampered state of mind and need to realize that they are in University, and the bar is much higher now
I am sure he is a charming man, but this is rate-my-prof not rate-a-man. As professor he comes up short. Most consequentially when it came to essay writing. I got the same grade on every paper I wrote regardless of what I changed. Asking him for help was fruitless as he seemed wholly uninterested. His class is fun but your grade may suffer.
Listen, he comes across as a pompus ass, but he knows his stuff. He's got a doctorate in film studies, and knows a ton about aboriginal people. Take his Aboriginal writing class if you want a good laugh and to have fun in the class. His jokes are inappropriate but if you keep in mind he's foreign and trying to be funny, he's actually all right.
I LOVED HIM! The people on this site who do not like him either didn't listen to his instructions or they like the Old Testament profs who have a giant stick up their butt and don't care about their students. This guy is funny, approachable and he cares about his students. Don't pass him up. He is the best prof I have had yet :)
Doesnt't follow his own outline. Makes inappropriate jokes and comments. Get out of his class.
Great class. Assignment was interesting and fun. Essay was easy to complete with his process. Mandatory attendance and participation. Great variety of media used. Fun stories.
Wisdom is awesome. He loves to laugh, he is all about global perspective. His feedback is a bit vague sometimes. He LOVES a heated class discussion, show some passion and he will be impressed!
This prof insulted the students constantly. He yells "shut up" when students have their hand up to ask a question. He bullies his students, he threatens to "stab their feet". In general, he is disrespectful. I took this music & dance class as an option & I will do fine in the class but if it were not past the add/drop date, I would walk out.
If you thought he was rude, you obviously don't have a sense of humor. Class was very entertaining, discussions were always interesting, assignments were EXTREMELY easy. He loves people who get involved and have an opinion. So if you say something twice a class and actually attend you will get a good mark based on that alone.
The novels which he assigned were fairly easy to read, which helped save time for learning how to write our first university level essays. He was very understanding. He knew when our class was feeing stressed and pushed the deadlines for us. Would highly recommend his class for students who do not need much out of class help.
Excellent! And yes, I agree with the other reviews below. If you were insulted, you have NO sense of humour. Not a hard class.
Wisdom, is he is really nice guy. I loved going to his class. And in top of all that, he was a easy marker and try his best to learn something useful from his class. If you were unclear of anything, he would be glad to help you out. If you had a good excuses for passing the deadline, he was understandable Highly recommend him in either Gmac or UofA
He is a very entertaining prof. His dressing sense is very... interesting. He knows how to match. LOL
WISDOM IS AWESOME! How many other English classes are you able to do creative projects instead of an essay. He taught it very well, and the materials were generally pretty interesting. If you get offended by his jokes you are way too sensitive! He has the best outfits too
I like this prof, he's a lot less vague about what he wants than other English profs. My only complaint is that on essays he's seems to want you to interpret texts the way he does. His humour can be mistaken for rudeness but sometimes it actually is.. you can tell when he is in a bad mood.
Wisdom is an awesome prof! He is super funny, I always spent the whole class laughing. He likes to make class fun and interesting. His class was the only class I would look forward to as it was a nice change of pace from boring, monotone lectures. Highly recommend him!
Wisdom is very interesting. He's a very funny, sarcastic and dramatic man. He has ALOT of readings, but most are decent so not too bad. He marks a little tough, but I still ended with a B so as long as you do what he says, you should do fairly well. One of my favorite classes (and I hate English). He loves outgoing people - especially his macho men
I thoroughly disliked this prof finding him inappropriate, rude and insensitive as he prefers to make jokes and laugh rather than act professional. I could never read him, the vibe was always that he's 'the boss' and not into helping students. I got decent marks back but asking for clarification was useless as the comments werent helpful
Here is the thing.. on this page his reviews are good which are false. Go to page 2 to really get an idea of how he is. VERY GOOD PERSON BUT VERY VERY HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. Avoid at all cost. Readings are useless so are his talks btw there are no actual talks. He just come to class and talks about irrelevant stuff as if he sow how has to pass time :(
Wisdom was an awesome prof. He's entertaining and will actually teach you something about life if you go to class, attendance is the participation mark anyways. The assignments were high school level and extremely easy to do. He's not very good with feedback or super clear on what he wants but he marks fairly and will talk to you about your grade.
By far easier than what my Advanced Placement High School English teachers had me expecting. It's more about analysing sociology than writing style. Just be prepared for class discussion and don't be scared to state your ideas. He's really open to new ideas and will respect you even more if you have them. Just keep up with the readings!
I WISH I HAD DROPPED HIS CLASS. Literally comes to class and talks like he is in a farmer's market. Like other people said. GOOD PERSON BUT HORRIBLE HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. Run fast run long. THE GOOD REVIEWS ARE PROBABLY WRITTEN BY HIM. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU WANT A DECENT GPA.
Wisdom is a good person, not a good prof, although his class was much easier than expected. His final was very tough, and he made all the essay topics about a book we never discussed in class, which really screwed up my GPA. He is condescending and not helpful in the slightest when you ask questions. Avoid him.
i'm honestly curious. does this man actually read our papers because nearly everyone i know has received the same mark for every paper. even the final. and he released marks within 2 days of writing it. he's not a good teacher. he seems like he likes the subject but honestly what we learned we learned to do in gr 10. TELL US HOW TO IMPROVE.
I really liked how excited he was teaching. He was super funny, but when it came down to writing essays or actually learning, I don't think i absorbed much since we honestly didn't learn how to improve our skills. He is quick in returning your marks. He marks pretty easy, so you'll do well.
He is the wrost professor I have ever met. His class and comments for the essays are never helpful. I don't know why he always laughs, because his jokes are never funny. Besides, he will never give you a good grade no matter how hard you work. Don't take his class! You will regret.
6 WORDS- DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! NEVER!!!!!
Doesn't offer a lot of mark feedback unless you visit his office hours. But good prof with genuine enthusiasm for the topic. Just be ready for class discussions everyday.
He seemed nice at the beginning of class, but he expected so much out of everyone and no matter how hard I tried my grade never increased even when I went to him for help.
Really interesting topics and discussions had, great man. His final exam and essays were fair and interesting. He marks pretty hard though and doesn't give much feedback on essays.
I really enjoyed Professor Agorde's class. Great class discussions on thought provoking subjects! I never thought I would see the day I enjoyed an English class especially at 8 am! But I truly did! I definitely recommend taking one of his classes if you can! :)
Wisdom is an interesting prof! He keeps class entertaining and keeps the atmosphere light. He loves class discussions so be prepared to talk in class! He marks relatively easy. However, he rarely gives feedback on the paper. If you want feedback you need to go to his office hours.
Wisdom is one of the best professors I've had, and I'm on my second degree. He is great at leading class discussions and provoking ideas. I loved this course, by the end I was a little sad it was over. A LOT of time and effort is required. If you want your grade to improve, go to his office to discuss your essay and you will see it improve.
Hard marker but a good person. Most English profs are like him.
I liked him a lot! Really cares about teaching and wants to see people do well- he'll say right out where people fail and what you need to do to succeed. In Analysis and Argument, the course I took, there is a lot of technical work that needs to be mastered. My impression is that if he can see you care, he'll do his best to help you. Funny too!
Really difficult maker, does not give proper feedback, overall made the class way harder than it should have been.
Great guy and good class. Easy marker and is clear on what he expects. Lots of class discussion and he clearly likes people who are vocal. The textsmovies studied ranged from boring to interesting but overall the course material was solid. Overall a super nice, helpful guy.
As for lecture content, what he teaches is on trend with social media critics on objectification and gender stereotyping. I really enjoyed delving into controversial topics with an open mind. By the time you've finished this course, you will be a much better critical thinker than you were before you started the course. Trust me.
Take someone else for ENGL 199. Just do it. Go into beartracks asap and get on a waiting list for someone else. Pop quizzes do not relate to anything taught and make no sense. Everyone did so bad on the midterm he had to give marks. Lectures involve no actual teaching, which is no help.
This professor is really bad. I would never take him ever again. You ask him a question in class, he makes fun of you. He always calls you out in class. I hate him. WORSE PROF
He has a couple "peer-review workshops", but they end up being helpful and boost your grade if you participate. He always stresses formatting, so beware of it. If you go to class, he will tell you what you should do for your papers, so people have no reason to complain. Participation marks are a portion of your grade; do the Eclass forums.
The class content was good and interesting, studying men and masculinities. However, his lectures suck, he talks on and on and he'll say be concise and not even finish his lecture.
Standard English professor, doesn't really care about getting to know you but not too tough with marks. Isn't sadistic like the rest of the department and is happy when you collectively improve. I'll never have trouble with citations of critical analyses again that's for sure
Wisdom is an interesting professor. I'm sure he means well, but his teaching style certainly does not work for everyone, and he is not exactly an easy marker. Would not recommend this course to anyone, mostly due to the lack of clear feedback, and the difficulty of his marking.
I hate english but Wisdom made it a lot less painful. His teaching style is very inclusive and is more fun than the average english class. The essays he assigns are not long and his marking isn't hard. I didn't get much feedback on most of my work and sometimes his answers to questions just leave you with more questions. Good overall!
Fantastic prof! Hilarious and keeps things interesting. He appreciates people who come to him for feedback and help. He helped me love English class for the first time.
I honestly don't know why people are rating him so badly. He is one of the best profs i have ever had. So awesome that I took him again for a new class the next semester. he's extremely funny as well.
I don't know why everyone had a bad experience with Wisdom. Honestly his evaluation and his expectations are clear. He's helpful when you ask him questions and classes are discussions rather than lectures. As long as you have a good sense of humor you'll enjoy his class. He turned English into my favorite class (and i hate English).
I hated english courses in high school, but Wizdom made english my favourite class in my semester. He's a very easy marker I wrote essays the night before and got them edited at the writing centre before class and still did great. He made class enjoyable and fun. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS CLASS AND THIS PROFESSOR, I WISH ALL MY CLASSES WERE THIS GREAT
Wisdom is a bit tough to swallow at first but he's an amazing person if you have a good class that can get into discussions. He is a pretty easy grader compared to most English profs and he's funny. He's also very lenient with participation marks if you have to miss some classes due to emergency situations.
He's a homie. reasonable amount of assignments and marks fairly. He understands the stress of our first year and spends lots of time talking to us about university expectations.
Wisdom is a great English prof, especially if you're a first year student. Classes are discussions rather than lectures, so he encourages participation. He explains exactly what is expected and prepares students for further academic writing. Assignments are manageable and he marks fairly. He's also hilarious!
Wisdom is a really good English prof. He makes English very interesting, and a really funny guy as well. He is the only prof that extends some assignments especially early in the semester. He is very easy to ask questions to, and a professor that is easy to get along with.
Wisdom is an amazing proffesor. He is is very chill will never get angry, very funny as a well. Class is very easy. No studying is needed for his classes. His exams are too easy.
Great guy! English has always been difficult for me but Wisdom is very helpful and I improved during his class. He is very kind and supportive and he makes his lectures funny and interesting (although sometimes his little anecdotes get a little off track, they were nice and didn't get in the way).
Clear deadlines, fair marker, and students always have room for improvement. Make sure you always show up for class, as attendance is important. Also, have to answer some simple questions on E-Class for participation marks. An overall amazing person, and an amazing professor.
I find that Wisdom has very unrealistic expectations of his students. He marks his writing assignment not according to his rubric so it is impossible to know what he expects. I would never recommend this prof.
Lots of assignments and unclear grading criteria. Class is more discussion based than lecture based; go to class as he takes attendance. Essays are tough as the texts we had to write about were very dry. Class demands too much time and effort. Do not recommend.
His classes are very discussion based. Involvement in class discussion is important. I found the class discussions to be helpful and interesting. He is a hard marker, but he is willing to give feedback in his office hours. Meetings with him helped me get better throughout the course. Overall, he is a good prof and I would be willing to take again.
Good Prof, Very Funny, Fair Grader and gives constructive feedback. Must check Eclass often as he posts questions and does not tell you about when they are posted and when they close. Come to class as the material read is discussed in detail. This will help with your papers.
Overall an okay prof. He had a good sense of humour, but his grading was very inconsistent. There was little to no feedback given on the essays/assignments we got back. Go to class as he takes attendance, and participation is important. Class discussions were helpful for understanding the text but he was a bit of a hard marker regardless
Took his class in spring and he made the 3 hours pass quickly. He tells little anecdotes and is very good at giving feedback. He prepares his students well for their midterm and final.
He make you enjoy inside the class, so his classes are not boring. However, he is disrespectful outside the class time. He is tough grader.. Just three questions and you have to choose one of them and write from 750-1000 words. He give same feedback again without teach you your mistakes just "revise your work". Spend time talking to girls.
3 essays, 1 creative assignment and 1 group presentation. Easy marker but doesn't give thorough feedback. Final was considerably easy - one essay portion and another portion dedicated to quotation analysis from texts studied throughout the course.
Really hard grader. I seemed to get B- on every assignment I did, no matter what I tried. His lectures aren't the greatest, and he tended to laugh a lot in class. Not the worst guy though. His interview a professional engineer assignment was interesting. That said, in my opinion, it's best to take English 199 with a different professor.
Wisdom was a great prof and just a great guy. Class discussions are done more so by the students, so participation matters a lot. He left brief comments on essays, but when he has to go through a whole class of essays, it's understandable. If you visit him in his office hours, he lets you know exactly how you can improve. He's also very funny.
Do yourself a favour. Go to beartracks and switch profs. The essays are returned fast, so fast they probably werent actually read, given the comments he will write. Funny/friendly, but its clear he's the boss that gets the final word in. Condescending to questions. He is a prof that believes "nobody is perfect", your grade will reflect that.
When I first read the reviews before the semester started, I was really worried. But now, I honestly felt like he was opposite from what people said he was bad for. I got a lot of feedback on my essays, he was nice outside of class, and I genuinely feel like he was helpful. I'm bad at English but I felt like I improved. I wouldn't drop this class.
Don't believe everything you read about him. I saw myself as someone who lacked writing skills going into his class and finished with an A-. A lot of the class was discussion about assigned readings. As long as you show up to class and put in the effort, you'll do fine.
Excellent professor for ENGL 199, made the lectures interesting and kept it relaxed. He loves making jokes and having fun with his classes. He marks fairly, not too much feedback but accessible outside class. Pop quizzes every once and a while, but were generally simple if you pay attention in class. Would recommend for a relaxed, low stress class.
Wisdom is a fun professor but I dont think I learned anything throughout the course in the realm of English. I was never sure what my handed back assignments were going to look like, seemed like a coin toss most times. Wisdom is a decent professor if you want to have fun but dont take him if you want to learn or have any grading consistency.
Marking is unpredictable and appears to not follow the rubric. Attendance is completely mandatory while classes (VAST majority discussion based) are entirely useless albeit occasionally fun. Dr. Agorde seems to care less about teaching and more about fun stories and discussions.
Do not take this professor if you want any semblance of grading consistency. I consider myself pretty decent at English in general (constant A's throughout HS and ENGL102) but it seemed impossible to get a decent grade here. I wish I would have heeded the warnings I saw on here before I took him. Being a fun professor only gets you so far.
Arrogant and Self-centered. It's his way or the Highway
He is condescending. While he encourages group discussion, he shuts down your ideas and makes you feel bad at yourself. He gives little feedback about papers and is not helpful during his office hours. Would not recommend.
Wisdom is the perfect professor for ENGL 199. He kept the content restricted to only formats which will be useful in a technical career, and made sure to emphasize the importance of communication. His marking was more than generous, and overall class was a light easygoing feeling that was very positive, even though it was 8AM. Highly recommended.
Class attendance is mandatory, but he explains exactly what he wants on every assignment. I was a person who was never strong at English in high school, but I did very well in his class. Wisdom does have the odd grammar quiz but it is very easy. He gives you alot of time to complete assignments and is always able to answer questions about your work
I strongly advise against taking a class with Wisdom. His marking is inconsistent at best and confusing at worst. Class time is spent poorly; anything important to the course is skimmed over in favor of personal anecdotes. Material provided in the course was ideologically driven to the point where Wisdom was corrected by students on facts/info.
By far the worst prof I have had in my entire English career. SWITCH CLASSES WHILE YOU STILL CAN!
Terrible at providing feedback for creative writing. No rubric at all, and he cannot explain clearly why he gives you a certain mark. His comments on stories make it clear that he did not actually read your story properly. Terrible at using technology, made two assignments and presentation all due on the same day. Class was very frustrating!
Professor Agorde is a good professor. His classes are very lively and entertaining, and, although sometimes a little off-topic, are generally very informative and enjoyable. Be wary of doing the readings, as there are many quizzes on them, and they count for a large part of the mark. Feedback can be patchy in a few areas, but, overall, pretty good.
I highly recommend taking a class with Wisdom. Although my class was at 8am, it was never dull. He is a funny guy and always has class discussion to keep students involved and uses comedy while lecturing which made it easier to remember or pay attention to what he was teaching. Class participation is mandatory as he does attendance everyday.
A lot of people will complain about him, but I think that's because they're not ready for University-level work. Dude it chill, you just have to work hard; like you should be doing anyway.
Dr. Agordes classes have a lot of debate and theyre usually on topic but not English related and he marks hard and doesnt exactly give valuable feedback for it.
Wisdom is the best professor I have had. He is funny, enthusiastic, and he always makes himself available to students. His class is a lot of work, but it is worth doing to not only better yourself as a student, but also as a human. I am not very good at English, and I got an A in this class just by trying and asking for help when I needed it.
If you're willing to put in the work, do yourself a favour and take a class with Wisdom. There were never dull moments in this class. The discussions were interesting and nothing was off limits. Be warned though, he will make you work for a decent grade, but his class is definitely worth the effort.
Awful at providing feedback; did not lecture so much as have us discuss things amongst ourselves. Hes funny, but pretty disorganized and unclear about his expectations, and I found that his class was more stressful than it was worth.
You will never know what he wants to do during class, randomly appeared quiz and very blurred essay requirement. He clarified the requirement TWO days before the deadline of a 1200+ word essay. Being extremely disrespectful towards students. If you want to see what a real sucker is, take his class!
He's really funny! I think he's a good professor. If you are a first year who isn't good at English you might get a bit of a whiplash from his class and the level of quality he expects. However by all means he gives good feedback and I genuinely found his advice and teaching helping me so much years later.
Wisdom's class is easy if you pay attention and work ahead on the essays and projects. Overall, the class work is not too difficult and you do not receive too much homework. The grading criteria is very fair and he will mark you down/up on concrete examples and criteria. He is amazing at engaging the class and you will learn if you participate!
Wisdom was very engaging despite the fact his lecture time was three hours in a row. He often let us go early, though. He is enthused about the subject, very willing to work on your stories outside of class, and highly values participation. If you're willing to put in the effort for the course, high quality writing isn't necessary for a good mark.
creative writing class- all info taught in class is easily found online for free. videos or recordings from outside sources were used a lot or he would give us the highlights of texts we had read. no grading criteria given so I dont know where I lost marks. Gave little feedback on written assignments despite that being the main draw of the class
Wisdom did not lecture. Most of the time we talked about where we can take inspiration in our daily lives (AKA just chatting about life) for an hour and a half. The few lectures we had he put on a video and that was our "lecture". There are no rubrics so I actually never know where I lost marks
As other's have said - doesn't lecture, just plays podcasts/old 90s documentaries, which makes you feel pretty said about dropping the tuition money for that level of instruction. Don't do much that's "creative" or "writey" during class time; you'll write on your own time at home, but you can do that without spending hundreds already.
Professor Agorde is very passionate about his writing and connected his teachings to his experiences. I would've liked to be taught more technique or for him to elaborate on the audio or videos that he played for us. He strongly agrees with not having a set criteria for grading, which is interesting. I would've liked more feedback on my writing.
Awful. It's obvious he doesn't read your work very closely and his feedback is really bad. Take the class for the peer reviews, those are helpful. But it honestly feels like its a class without a teacher. His lectures are old videos. He also coughs without covering his mouth towards the whole class. It was disgusting.
Wisdom did a great job teaching the course online and his lectures were always interesting and informative. Although he doesn't give out many "A's" on assignments, his feedback is always very specific and helpful. Wisdom is a great guy and I would highly recommend him.
I actually enjoyed Wisdom Agorde on a personal level. Wisdom is funny, has great taste in novels and actually gives good feedback (for the most part). However, he is easily the hardest professor I have ever had for an English class. Be prepared to proof read EVERYTHING. Also, he does NOT include due dates on the syllabus, which is the worst!
Wisdom as a person is amazing. He is funny, caring, respectful, and overall a nice guy. When it comes to his grading, however, be aware. His grading rubric is very bare and you dont know what he wants. He doesnt give good feedback either, he just underlines things on papers and doesnt do much else. It was hard to know what to change.
Wisdom, Wisdom... He is honestly the nicest prof! Cons are he did not have a clear grading criteria and his marking was kind of vague and not enough feedback. But overall this was my FAVOURITE course by far in all my five years of Uni. Wisdom really made the course engaging. Vodka was a long running joke in this course
Wisdom was probably the best professor I've had in my first term of online school. Then again that isn't saying much as most the profs I had were quite bad. Either way Wisdom's class was interesting and straight to the point. The assignments weren't too difficult and as long as you handed something in you would get an easy B-.
Ultimately I found my experience in Wisdom's class to be quite enjoyable. He's an excellent prof, and does give great constructive criticism on papers, presentations, etc. However, attendance is very important, and participating in forum posts or in-class discussion is crucial. He is quite funny, and you can tell he is passionate about writing.
He is a really awesome teacher. He really tries to get to know his students. You probably wouldn't want to skip class as he always takes attendance. Funny guy
Wisdom is a nice guy, however, he is ridiculous with his marking. Compared to other ENGL 199 sections, Wisdom hands out much lower marks, and in addition, offers little feedback for improvement. He emphasizes far too many marks on little things such as formatting, and he is incredibly vague with his instructions as well. Good luck if you have him.
Wisdom's lectures are entertaining and pretty valuable. He discusses topics that are relevant for engineering students and he's funny. However, his assignments are super vague and it's difficult to know what he wants. His feedback isn't useful, he just says what you did wrong, never tells you how to fix it.
Great prof
Wisdom was a nice and funny prof, yet was not someone who graded well. He had no rubric/criteria for grading, and didn't understand almost anything in your short story, therefore taking marks off for ridiculous things. If you miss more than 2 classes you get a D for participation... I felt like I was writing stories for him and not myself.
As long as you keep up with the timeline and do things when there are supposed to be done, this is a very easy course. Our topic was men and masculinity so we already knew everything, it was as simple as translating it onto paper. He is a humorous teacher and enjoys class participation. Try and be active in the class to be in good standings.
At first I did find him a little hard to listen to, he heavily focuses on partcipation and his grading is tough and unclear. However try to talk in class and he will seem a lot better. My advice is go to his office hours a lot and get feedback beacuse he will be clear and less condescending one on one. Eclass was horrible and stay ahead of outline.
Although I didn't mind Prof Agorde, I took another english class at the same time and got a whole letter grade higher in that class than in his. He's a super tough marker and he would always circle certain words on my essay's and just put a question mark by them which is pretty unclear. LOTS of assignments so stay up to date with the schedule
Wisdom is really funny, and he finds a way to connect to his students that I've never seen from a prof before. His marking is a little wonky sometimes, but I don't even mind because of how kind and constructive he is. His feedback is genuinely helpful, even if it doesn't reflect your intentions on the assignment. Would recommend!
He will assign you essays that are worth most of your marks (15% and 30%) but will not explain how to write one effectively. This gave unclear expectations and would take points away very little mistakes. Participation is weighed very heavily. As for him as a person, he was generally rude and quite abrupt. Made it intimidating to participate.
Participation is the most important thing. He worked hard to build up a positive social community in the class. Assignment instructions were vague and he didn't give much in the way of rubrics or marking criteria. Had an ongoing issue of him not really "getting" student's stories, which was frustrating. Wonderful energy though, very enthusiastic.
Wisdom does not care for his students. Repeatedly showed that. Absolute lack of respect for students. Gave us two days for a presentation, expected us to be the same quality as the group that got 2 weeks. Humiliated us in front of the class. Gave people in class zero for not using a pencil on a scantron. I would never take his class again.
His feedback is minimal and there was no rubric for any assignments at all, making his entire grading process subjective and very difficult to get a high mark. As others have said, he has an issue with "getting" certain stories. However, he has a great personality and created an amazing classroom environment where it was easy to share ideas.
To make it simple, he graded male counterparts in the class easily, and graded females with different standards... He has tenure and is untouchable. Take his class if you want to make your first year that much more miserable.
While funny and kind, his grading is very difficult, as he doesn't seem to understand what you have written. He asks questions in feedback that our peers had no issue with, and seems to want us to "tell" instead of show in our stories because he does not pick up on even simple parts of the story. Take this class for good peer reviews, nothing else.
Love him, our class focuses on masculinity which was interesting. Essays require lots of effort lol, as long as you put in the effort and go to his office hour frequently, you will survive. I am an international student and English is hard for me, believe me, as long as you put in the effort required, you will do well! No final/mid-term
I had Wisdom for my first and last English class in university, and he made it a great experience. He was funny and light hearted, and brought a great energy to the class. He passed around an attendance sheet for each class, but I didn't feel pressed to attend class. I attended because it was fun. Overall, Wisdom was a great professor.
Funny prof but does not care about giving extensions for compassionate or medical reasons. The syllabus seemed clear at first but he has added readings, quizzes, reflections, draft submissions, etc. If you are a planner do not even bother trying with this class. Unfair group project layout, some groups get two weeks to work others get six.
Very engaging and fantastic person he is, I learned a lot. The class itself - if you dislike writing and it really stresses you, avoid this class there are first draft submissions, 3 major assignments and weekly (often times more than one) video/article discussion forums due all over the place, it got really tedious and overwhelming
He takes weeks to return grades that he claims to have finished in a few days citing that he just didn't want to ruin our weekends. his feedback is also contradictory to the text book we have been instructed to use. he also has a habit of telling us how to do assignments the day after they are due.
Not a good idea if you are just trying to get the grades
Although this class was def a challenge, I learned ALOT and gained some really valuable insights-- I highly recommend, but be prepared to work. Wisdom's humour made the class really enjoyable, but what I really appreciated about him was his ability to connect with the class, and really just talk to us. Overall, it was a very engaging class
Nice enough in class, but lacked organization and empathy when it came to assignments. The syllabus and class schedule were confusing, and he would make students feel bad about asking for clarification. Lots of homework and readings, to the point it felt unfair compared to other English classes. The group presentation format felt unfair as well.
Professor Agorde is not as bad as people make him out to be. As long as you show up to class, listen to the discussion, and keep up with the assignments, you'll do fine in his class. Personally I really enjoyed his lectures and thought he was a decent professor.
He wants his students to succeed. He is there to help you. If you are willing to work, he's willing to work for you. He is very responsive when It comes to trying to reach him off or on campus.
I have never hated anything more than the 3 HOUR LECTURES of this class. For more than half of the class, he would just talk about the most random things. His grading criteria are very unclear, and he tends to contradict himself. RUN.
If you're coming to class with enthusiasm, he'll match it right back. He loves to laugh and crack jokes. Just don't go to his class with only your grade in mind. His average grade turnaround was about a week which isn't bad for an English class. Just be there for attendance and pay attention and your mark will be fine.
As stated by others, he has an issue "getting" students stories. There are no rubrics, and marks are given based on his subjective opinion of your story and not evaluated for writing technique, making it difficult to do well. He's a very nice guy, but lectures are long and dry. Peer review workshops are super helpful, but otherwise I would avoid.
Attendance and in-class engagement is mandatory if you want a good grade. Marks very hard, docks marks for very small things such as not capitalizing your name. To do well, make sure to use office hours and develop a good relationship with him. Has pop quizzes so stay caught up.He's a funny guy who means well and has a great classroom environment.
Wisdom was a funny guy, however it was nearly impossible to get anything above a B+ on any assignment. relied heavily on textbook and we had to do stupid responses every day. Would not recommend taking for ENGL 199 as his marks were significantly lower than the other sections, while requiring more work.
Wisdom as a person is kind and caring. He wants the best for his students. On top of that, this is the first English class I've enjoyed writing essays. He gave so much time, first drafts, and peer reviews which made it hard to get a poor grade (As long as you're putting in the work also). I learnt A LOT from this class and grateful I took it.
Wisdom's class is overall pretty fair game. If you come to class, keep up with the reading (like 30minutes once to twice a week) you'll be fine. He can be a hard marker for the essays but if you work with him, his feedback are really useful. Best part about Wisdom is that he's hilarious and you will rarely have boring a class.
Dr. Agorde is a lovely person and teaches in a very engaging way. His class is structured well and is geared towards discussion, but this means that there is a lot of prep work required for each class. There are also 4 large assignments that are brutal.
He assigned an unbelievable amount of homework and offered little effective feedback, and gave long, unecessary lectures. He could lecture for 1-3 hours and provide nothing but obvious annecdotes. Certain parts of the homework were unclear and often caused me to fall behind. This professor is the reason I smoke
Wisdom is a caring professor who makes the writing-heavy class engaging. While it requires consistent effort, tools like Unstuckstudy and the free textbook can help manage the workload. Overall, a rewarding experience.
He's funny but turns an hour lecture into three hours by talking about anything. He's super nit-picky, so whatever you do, something will still be wrong. He assigns so much homework, and you will fall behind quite quickly. Big ego too.
Wisdom is a great professor and he is hilarious. He is helpful when you ask him questions. However, in the essays we write, he marks them pretty hard, so try your best to survive in his class. There are a lot of forms to do and 4 essays.
Wisdom is very personable, but by god is he a tough marker. I don't know anyone who got above a B+ on the short stories. His feedback suggests he doesn't understand them. It's a shame because I genuinely love talking to him, and I find him very entertaining. But from a GPA standpoint... it's just not worth it.
He was a really good prof, but marks really hard, however if you ask for help he is ready to help you. He was a nice person to talk to, and assignments were not that hard.
Wisdom obviously enjoys class, has more energy than anyone else for an early morning, he's quite a big joker. It's nice to have fun during a lecture but he has a tendency to direct his laughter and jokes onto the students, this makes it really difficult to participate in his lectures if you aren't especially confident in yout ability to answer.
He is nice but I would not take another course with him. He is extremely unorganized and biased when it comes to assignments and grading. The whole course I had no idea what he was looking for in terms of assignments. He also lacks empathy for students and will not help if you reach out to him.
Professor Wisdom was knowledgeable and approachable but marked very harshly. Despite extensive revisions and frequent office hours, my grades stagnated or declined. Class discussions often felt like students repeating his views, which made them somewhat frustrating. That said, I'd still consider taking another class with him, due to his knowledge.
He did not answer a single one of my emails the whole term , even tho follow-ups. The emails were not related to syllabus but rather issues regarding personal matters. He grades extremely tough and ignored me after class when I tried to discuss my email. He also purposely deducted me 5% on a project for a mistake he did which I tried to inform him.
This prof gave me and my peers feedback that made absolutely no sense so we put our stories into ChatGPT. For reference, my story was vile and at the worst part he commented, "What am I supposed to be feeling?". ChatGPT gave the exact same feedback as Wisdom. Paying 700$ for a class to be graded by AI is definetly not worth it. Wisdom was not wise.
I LOVE WISDOM SO MUCH!! However his grading was quite harsh and even when you took into account his marking for the next paper you still got the same grade, almost a B- no matter what. His class discussion was AMAZING and i learnt so much from this class!! I love him as a professor but he is a harsh marker so be aware!
He is the absolute worst prof in the english department. There is no class structure, no clear grading rubric, and doesn't respond to email or believes in extensions. He will never grade you based on your work, rather he grades you based on preconceived notions. By that I mean, if you look like a B student, you will never get higher than B-.
Wisdom's lectures are fun to sit through for an 8am lecture, he makes jokes and encourages discussion. He is an overly harsh marker, and provides feedback but even after taking the feedback my mark was unchanged. He is very biased towards marking the class in regards to the "average student" ie. the B range, and rarely gives a mark outside of that
Only way to do "Good" in class is to go to office hours before submission to get extra feedback on each essay. Regardless, youre probably going to end up with a B+ maximum. Insanely harsh marker but cares for his students. Do not take if you want to maintain a high GPA
this class was okay, i really liked wisdom he was very carying in ensuring ur doing okay within school and what not. there was 4 papers and the final paper was worth quite a bit, some of his grading critera was not super clear, esp for the group project so make sure to ask questions to clarify any questions u have. overall good prof
Run the other way, even if there is no other class take it next semester. As funny as he is he LACKS teaching skills. Waiting for an email response was like waiting for a pigeon to bring a letter. Ask him a question he makes you feel dumb, grading/expectations are not clear at all. God must have been on my side because I don't know how I passes.
Love this guy, he grades a little hard but he clearly really cares about his students.
You are basically stuck at a B- unless you fight tooth and nail for something better. The hours I devoted to this class were a waste. I consider myself quite a good writer and have historically had excellent English marks, so if you wish to have a good grade switch classes. His friendliness makes me want to like him, but this class was my undoing.
The only reason I can't give a 1.0 rating is because he really cares for his students' wellbeing. However, HE was my greatest source of stress this semester. When he says the class average will be around a B-, he means that he doesn't give out grades higher than B. It was pretty disheartening to see the other classes have signifcantly higher marks.
He is a great guy who cares for his students wellbeing and makes an effort. He also is very accommodating when issues arise. He is a hard marker though. Even after going to office hours and having him proof read before submission the highest mark I ever got was a B.
