Very difficult class... Must know REL before taking him!
Entertaining to listen to, and a nice guy, BUT he takes no prisoners with grades
Very hard, but very good! I learned TONS!!!
Good teacher, but VERY hard. (Are there any easy Rel. profs here?)
Great class. He is easy to understand and well organized
No Comments
Definitely a hard prof, but very funny and engaging. I learned a lot from the class.
Has some complex that makes him feel a need to disagree with almost anything that anyone has ever written, and bases an entire class on his WRONG opinions.
Fantastic professor. He is brilliant and lectures are lively! He is very clear and easy to follow, you know what he expects from you.
Great prof. He makes the class very interesting and ingaging. Not a boring class at all, time flies. Tests are hard, but he gives you a review sheet before with everything you need to know (including essays). Nice guy and very funny!
wonderfully insigthful
Lee is engaging and brilliant but by far these qualities are outweighed by his poor teaching skills. He talks too fast in class, does not give clear instructions for assignments and he does not take it well when someone disagrees with him and. Also unorgan
his intelligence can be a little intimidating, but he's got a great sense of humor (although his lectures can be boring). he is very willing to help and you know exactly what he expects from you. always talk to him about the papers.

Won Lee does have a strong opinion, but he makes class interesting. He tells jokes, adds in impersonations, and is funny. His lectures are straight forward and easy to copy down in your notes. Tests are straight from his review sheets.
Funny prof! Problem is that he is very hard to understand and his class is DEATH to your GPA. Take the class and your gpa WILL go down. Nice guys though.
genious, funny, class is very interesting but very very hard, miss more than 3 classes and you WILL fail. has new, intriging ideas and works hard to do a good job
amazing, i recommend this prof to anyone
This prof. is VERY smart and funny. Sometimes its hard to follow and know what the heck he's talking about. He wants you to do well but he is still a pretty hard prof.
Teaches an intro to religion class like it's seminary. English is hard to understand sometimes, which hinders his clarity. On exam essays he wants word for word things he says in his lectures, anything less will drop your grade. The hardest grader I've come across in my life.
hard. unwilling to help students. easily frustrated, and takes everything personally.
great prof - he's fast & sometimes difficult to follow, but very logical, and very intellectual -if you can stick with the progression of his lecture you will do fine... he enjoys his classes and has a fun sense of humour and lecture style...and oh yah... Prof Lee.. he's so hot right now... Prof Lee
Very hard to understand and not clear on any assignments. Offers no help for those who ask and assumes you know everything about the bible before taking the class. Worst professor I've ever had.
Fast talking and essay tests. A brilliant man, passionate about what he teaches. Class attendence and detailed notes a must to do well, but he is interesting to listen to.
Amazing professor, has a huge knowledge base, which means he brings a LOT to the lecture. He also expects a lot from his students on papers and tests, but is always available for help if you want it. Bring a thick notebook and some extra pencils, prepare to work hard, and enjoy! Blessings!
great prof that stresses stundents prove what they believe in systematic logic. u do that on test and papers, he won't grade down. however in order to the info to make a valid point on a test, u better have took complete notes
Over 3/4 of the class is failing. I went from being an A/B student to failing this class. He expects a word for word account of his lectures on the exams or else you fail- unreasonable when it comes to grading. Every possible thing that he can find he will mark down significantly.DONT TAKE HIM!!!
While his accent can sometimes interfer with your understanding, he really knows his stuff and his enthusiasm is addictive. He is VERY willing to help you succeed. Taking his class in the summer was a definit plus, the work load was perfect.
this man knows his stuff - and is worth the time if you care about the topic. opinionated, BUT presents the material and wants/expects you to make applications. great prof - makes you think and makes you work. -- oh, and you can understand him... and he grades well - you can disagree with him, but back it up.
Lectures are extremely interesting and go by really fast. Won is an incredibly intelligent and funny guy. When it comes to assignments however, he does expect a lot out of you. He not only expects you to read and write your butt off but wants you to remember what he said, what you raid, and THEN form your own conclusions. Not unreasonable yet ha
His test are killers, he basicly expects you to memorize the bible. the classes are really easy though, never any homework.
good class, hes pretty funny if you are listening. make sure to take great notes, writing down absoltutely everything he says. if you memorize those for the tests, you will do well.
Lee is very opinionated, he thinks that his ideas are golden, and grades hard - pretty much the only way to get good grades on his papers and exams is to figure out what he wants you to say, and say it. His tests are pretty hardcore, too. He makes you think, but usually shoots down questions or twists them so he can continue saying what he wants.
Prof. Lee is extremely intelligent. He knows his stuff but in return expects you to learn what he is teaching also. He is very funny and does a great job of keeping class interesting. also very good with analogies. Write down everything he says or puts on the board and memorize it for the test and you will do fine.
He made me laugh just about everyday, and he made religion interesting. He knows his stuff, but sometimes there is A LOT of information to know. But he's cool and he makes it interesting.
He is pretty good at keeping the class interesting, despite the subject.
What a great prof! He's very knowledgeble with the Bible. He does have opinions, but doesn't preach them like others say. The only hard part aboutthe class is that you have to think about what you are writing, you can not just copy from sources, because they are somewhat opinion papers.
Prof Lee is amazing. He knows his stuff & is passionate about what he teaches. Take notes & listen in class. Hard work, but worth it. Tests you should study 8-12ish hrs. Make sure someone asks for a study guide, he puts everything you need to study on this, but if no one asks for it he won't give it. Work hard & you'll be rewarded.
Won Lee is great; really hard but worth taking.
Won is hilarious; i wrote down every funny thing that he mentioned; it's a long list. Overall, the class is really hard, but interesting. He has an accent, so if you aren't a good listener you may have a little more trouble.
Great Prof, Won in a million. Really knows his theology, and pretty funny if you catch his jokes. He allows you to struggle through the tough issues. He makes you question your beliefs, but in the end your faith will be stronger and you will have the knowledge to back it up. If you think you know the Bible well now, wait till after his class.
You were really good at what you taught. You really knew what you were talking about. You knew the Bible really well. The only thing is that I think that you dont know that we are just trying to get core out of the way. You test are like some of the hardest test I've ever had to take yet. You did well. Just keep in mind that it is just a core clas
As a person, I love him, he's so funny. As a prof, extremely difficult. He has near impossible expectations. Unless you have an affinity for religion, take someone else.
This class seriously changed how I read the Bible. It was amazing, and Prof. Lee makes it really interesting and thought-provoking. Yeah, his exams are tough, but he's fair, and if you study you'll be fine...he'll give a review sheet if you ask for it.
This class is somewhat interesting, but Lee assumes everyone is a religion major. For those of us who are not, the readings and lectures are at times long and challenging. He is a smart man, but needs to bring his lectures down for non-religion majors.
He really desires for everyone to enjoy the class. He enjoys what he is teaching and for the most part does a good job at it. His tests are hard but if you can find someone who took his class before that can tell you the format of his tests it helps a lot. I'd take him again.
Professor Lee is awesome. He is incredibly smart and knowledgeable about this subject. Lee is a great teacher, i have learned a lot from him.
Prof. Lee hosts a great class, but he grades Hard. That is probably from him teaching harder classes or just being too smart and having high expectations.
Professor Lee is full of too many random ideas that he tries to show as truth. He claims Biblical trueths, but some of his teachings like Jesus never needed to be physically here, it could have just been a great idea and thats fine. When confronted about them he turns and becomes your enimy. His grading is not fair, and plays things off with hum
Best course I've had at Calvin. Lee is difficult, but this is college, right? Presents the Bible for what it actually says, and makes students question what they believe. Helps students to understand the Bible, from which students can further develop in their spiritual lives. College is about seeing new perspectives; this course is fantastic.
one of the best REL profs I've had at Calvin- pretty easy going and lenient as long as you talk to him
Excellent Professor. Has hard and challenging tests, but if you study and show up to class you should do fine. He's funny and a nice guy too.
In the future, PLEASE do not move papers up without notice. You moved it up FIVE DAYS so we lost Fri-Tues and told us TWO DAYS before the new due date. I never start papers that late-the quality of my work will reflect it and I'm very disappointed and frustrated. Conscientious students will want to start earlier than you've made it possible to do.
This man is impossible. He's pretty funny though. In class he makes an outline but never follows it. He never stays on topic and I can't follow anything he says. Please do yourself a favor and take someone else.
Totally agree with poster below. The content of the class is NOT that challenging, but his teaching style makes it almost impossible to do well, even having taken good notes (as good as can be on the lectures), read, and studied. Seriously, take a different religion professor ... it's very difficult to ascertain his expectations, which = low grade!
Professor Lee is a cool guy. He definitely knows his stuff. If you listen in class and take notes, you'll do just fine. He gives very clear expectations for his tests ahead of time, and is open to questions if you're confused. If you have a good attitude going into this class and actively participate, you'll enjoy it and do well.
Disagree with poster below. Unclear test expectations, very difficult class even with interest and engagement. Students who wrote 10-page papers and prepared 7-8 minute presentations ended up talking to a group of five students about their paper, then sitting up front while Lee talked the whole time. Also, FAR too many political comments. Stop it!
This guy is awesomely crazy, his integration of celebrities and pop culture into the biblical topics are hilarious! I've learned a ton and a half by taking his class. I really don't understand how people think he's hard, his outlines are fine, just leave enough space for two pages worth of writing under each subtopic.
I'm studying for an exam right now and I have no idea what to do. Expectations are way too high for an intro level core class and I feel like I have no hope for success. the study guide has nothing to do with the text book or the lectures so I feel like I'm learning something completely new just for an exam. It's a struggle to stay afloat.
Prof Lee is very manageable if you put in the work. I didn't do ANY assigned reading, so there's little homework in between test week. Tests are very challenging and you have to basically repeat the lecture to get full credit but studying pays off. If you study hard, you can get good grades. He is funny and very smart so class is interesting.
won lee is amazing!!!!! he is the best teacher i've ever had.
Whoever posted below is obviously lying. They rated everything poorly yet claim he's wonderful. He is NOT wonderful. Do NOT take him. He is literally the worst professor I have ever had, especially at Calvin. Avoid at all costs.
I am currently working on the final term paper about an article that is just is ambiguous as his teaching, if that's what you'd like to call it. I have not learned one thing in the class and I don't recommend him.
When he informed us we had to fill out evaluations for the class, he flaunted the fact that no matter what we said he wouldn't get fired because he has tenure. It was definitely *flaunting,* too. So inappropriate. Furthermore, he makes personal comments about loneliness, family matters, politics, and his career. The classroom is not the place, Lee.
so often the mark of a good professor is the displeasure from students looking to get by with minimal effort. grow up a little, kids. welcome to college. you might just learn something. prof lee is honest, honorable, passionate, knowledgeable, and not to forget: hilarious. i'll be sad to see the class come to an end in a few days.
Commenter below, I assure you that as a college junior at 19 to graduate at 20, honors student, every semester on the Dean's List, National Merit Scholar, I do not try to get by with minimal effort. The issue is his teaching, not his students. Professor Lee is a decent man, but a terrible professor,so get over yourself. Condescending.
Prof. Lee is an interesting and funny prof, he is really hard but his class is still worth taking! one of my favourite classes of the year!!
This class was insanely hard. Lee breezes of some of the topics at a breakneck pace and then expects in depth analysis on exams. He is a nice person Just not a good professor. I do not recommend taking this class unless you want to unnecessarily stress yourself out.
SOOOOOOO hard! One of the hardest classes at Calvin! But it was interesting. Talks quite fast and sometimes is hard to understand becasue of his accent. If you are looking for easy DO NOT TAKE. If you are looking to learn-you can try it but you still might not learn! I don't remember much at all from the whole semester!
Prof. Lee is one of the most knowledgeable professors I have ever had.He goes over the material quickly, but is very willing to help and clarify if you ask questions in class or come in during office hours. He's funny, and has a good sense of humor about his accent, which really isn't that bad at all.Hard class, but I recommend if you want to learn!
Just so everyone knows, Lee frequenly posts things about himself here. He told us so in class. I think the only positive ratings here are ones posted by Lee. DO NOT TAKE AT ANY COSTS! He called my friend a heretic in front of class because she didn't believe in predestination. Really.
Possibly the worst teacher i have ever had. Extremely rude and unhelpful as a person. As a teacher, his notes are virtually impossible to understand, and his lectures do not correspond to exam questions. Avoid at all costs. PS: don't believe everything on this page, Won Lee frequently uses this site and rates himself highly. He fully admits thi
Honestly the worst professor I have ever had. Nothing good to say about him as a person or teacher.
This guy is soooo tough. His accent makes some words impossible to understand, but he does try hard. His outline is all over the place. I would love to throw a few beers back with this guy and have some deep discussions, but his class is one of the hardest I've taken at Calvin. He's hilarious at times, but his class is way too difficult.
Knows the material, learn alot in the class but extremely hard to know what to expect on the tests even though he gives you review material, asks for extremely specific things, very nice though
Lee is a nightmare. The only way you can pass his tests is if you repeat his lectures word for word. Your own opinion is always wrong. The only time I got a good grade was when I simply repeated his words. My own opinions were always marked poorly. His class was a disappointment especially at a school like Calvin.
Everyone says how hard Prof. Lee class is. I took REL 121 and yes it was a challenge but it forces you to work hard and you do learn a lot. If you are willing to do work (which you should considering we are in college) then this is a great class. Prof. Lee really cares about what he teaches and his students and this is evident in how he teaches.
Awful professor. Difficult to understand, lectures are unorganized and sporadic. His tests are difficult but not in the sense of comprehension, rather he just uses poor logic when choosing questions that correlate with the provided review material.
Any positive comments you see on here are definitely posted by Lee himself. Whoever is in charge of his department seriously needs to look into his teaching. He flaunts his tenure and gets pissed when you don't understand him. People who drop classes should be allowed to send in reviews; his boss needs to know how terrible his teaching is.
Don't be afraid to go to his office if you're struggling with the material or essays. Yes, its a hard class and sometimes he presents his personal opinions as the truth but this is college, learn and discern my friends. Plus, he's funny!
He is enthusiastic about religion, and knows his stuff. However, he seemed to think we were in a 300-level class - it was incredibly difficult! The class was almost enjoyable, as he is quite funny with his accent. But the difficulty was way too high. If you are a religion major, I recommend him. Otherwise, I would avoid him to keep up the GPA.
I think Lee is fantastic. He is extremely interesting. His lectures make sense. You have to be prepared to work well in class and take notes, but outside of class you really don't have to do much work. Follow his outlines on the board and write everything down and you'll be set. Very nice and interesting professor
Professor Lee was extremely difficult to understand and his lectures had no variety or excitement. His tests were close to impossible and he didn't seem to care much about the success of his students.
Professor Lee was so great! This class was interesting and a lot of fun. I had no idea what the course was going to be about, but he made the content interesting, engaging and relevant to my life. I would highly recommend him. He requires a fair amount of work, but it is a religion class, so that's expected. Willing to work with you for grades.
Well, what to say: This guy is so horrible when it comes to clarity. His test are so ridicules with the amount of information he wants you to put. Besides failing his tests, the only good part about his class was the extra-credit, which is the only reason I passed. STAY AWAY!
This professor gives lots of notes every day in class and requires a ridiculous amount on the tests, but it is an interesting class in which you learn a lot
Hilarious teacher with engaging lectures. However, his tests are very challenging as is his class. Oh, and start studying for that final right now!
These reviews are too harsh. His clarity is the only thing I struggled with; he talks fast and has a pretty heavy accent. Readings arent necessary, but skim them before class. Definitely start studying for the exams ASAP! He's super smart and you will learn a lot if you really want to. Use the Take Your Prof to Lunch program before the paper/final!
You need to be prepare to take good notes during lectures. He does not grade too harsh on the papers but his exams are very hard. However, if you prepare for your exams like two to three weeks you'll do fine and may be great. People who say he is harsh grader are people who don't study. I've enjoyed taking his class and he knows what he is teaching
Very smart and knows what he is talking about but also expects way too much out of students. His exams are very difficult. I learned a lot in the class but I don't know if I would recommend him if you are concerned with your GPA
The course is hard. Period. There is so much material to go through in such a short period of time, but it's not a lack of effort by the professor. He is very helpful. All you have to do is ask for exam reviews or help and he will provide it.
This class was one of my favorite classes taken at calvin. The professor was great! He was very enthusiastic and absolutely hilarious! It was fun to come to class. There is a lot of information that you have to take notes on, but if you ask for a review guide for the exams, he will give it to you! You will get a good grade if you study.
Work hard and ask for a study guide before exams. Study harder for that. Also, he talks fast. You must have a good note-taking skill during his class. However, he is a fair grader. So, do not just give up if the course challenges you.
Apparently he's supposed to be very tough, but that was not my experience. I still regularly meet with this professor, even though we haven't had a class together for almost two years. He cares about his job, he cares about the students, and he knows the material better than most professors I have met.
Kind of crude, others thought he was hilarious, but he definitely was not. I wanted to skip everyday, but he takes attendance. Boring lectures on interesting topics.
Very funny and engaging prof. Extremely helpful if you go to his office and ask for it. He gave us very accurate review sheets for each test, and a 15 point extra credit project. You get almost no homework other than three papers and exams. However, he is a hard grader and does not give very vague outlines for papers.
Confusing and hard to follow at times. Daily reading are important to understand class discussion. Tests are tough with a lot of memorization. Ask for a review guide and he will provide it. Tough but doable.
Professor Lee does a great job keeping students attention. However, I feel like some of the information gets lost in his attempts to be "hip" and funny. Expect everything he says, and I mean EVERYTHING, to be on a test. Hope you can take good notes!
Class goes long every day. The tests are the longest thing you will ever take but he is a good professor in his lectures.
Prof. Lee gives great lectures. However, sometimes he talks to fast and he's accent makes it hard to understand what he is saying . He is a super hard grader and seems more than willing to take away points for simple things. I recommend NOT taking him.
He is very hard and not really willing to make any changes. I would not recommend taking his class unless you are upperclassmen. We only do lectures and they are very detailed. He is funny but it doesn't make up for how hard the class is.
His tests are super hard. Be ready to write and memorize like crazy
Won Lee is an energetic professor who cares about his students, but his tests are nearly impossible and his lectures can be quite confusing. He is quite a funny guy, but be prepared to study a lot and do a lot of writing.
Won Lee is an amazing man. He is funny, and his lectures are amazing. HOWEVER, HIS TESTS ARE SO HARD. IT'S MY FRESHMAN YEAR AND I THOUGHT HE WAS GONNA GO EASY ON US. BUT NO, HE IS A TOUGH GRADER AND EXPECTS WAYYY TOO MUCH FROM US. I MEAN LIKE it's impossible to easily complete his test in less than an hour. My grades are ruined because of him...
Won Lee is a great lecturer and definitely knows his stuff. He is hilarious and made an 8am fun to be in, but his tests are extremely difficult. He does provide a study guide with all of the terms you need to know and options for the essays, but you really need to study to do okay. He does recognize when the whole class does poorly and offers EC.
This professor is hard grader. You've been warned!
Won Lee is extremely knowledgeable in his field. His lectures are well-organized, and he's got a real sense of humor. If you don't want a hard Religion course, don't take him. But if you're up for the challenge, you will learn so much. REL 211 is one of the best classes I've taken at Calvin; I wish more profs were like Lee.
Don't be thrown off by all the tough grading on here, Prof Lee is a great prof. He is hard, especially on the essays, but the test is worth the majority of the grade and he CLEARLY lays out exactly what will be on it. Ask for a review sheet, and he will upload one that the questions come directly off of. Class is mandatory to do well.
He's a very tough grader on the papers. Going to class is MANDATORY. Must be able to take good notes because it's lecture intensive. The tests are quite difficult, however, he hands you a study guide if you ASK for one, and you must know everything thoroughly. GOOD LUCK LOL
He is very respectable. He is so smart and obviously knows his stuff. Since he works so hard, he expects you to work just as hard. You need to do top notch work and hours of studying to pass. He does show grace if you accidentally read a prompt wrong on your test. He is pretty funny. He is a great guy and a great teacher. Exams are blue book.
He's a prof that people either love or hate. His accent makes it a little hard to understand what he's saying sometimes, but his great sense of humor makes up for it. His papers were easier than his tests, but he gives clear study guide before every test. He has a clear outline of the class on the board, so it's easy to take notes. Highly reccomend
No detailed notes or powerpoint provided, just talked for an hour and expected us to be able to write everything down fast enough. Tests and papers are your whole grade, and he grades them as if you should be a master in the subject. Not very sympathetic
Professor Lee is a very knowledgeable professor and it's clear that he cares deeply about what he's teaching. You need to attend class or you will miss out on valuable lecture material which will almost certainly come up on the test. Midterm and final are both really hard but he gives a study guide which helps a ton. Extra credit was offered.
His lectures were 70% course material, 20% political commentary, and 10% one long metaphor about the Holy Sem Pond. We had a midterm and a final, two small papers (2-3 pages), and one large research paper (10 pages). There were two opportunities for extra credit. Hes super engaging and funny. His lectures and the textbook are both really important
Too much on politics and not enough course content
Definitely the hardest class and prof I've ever had. Although his lectures were incredibly inciting and usually with a lot of detail to take notes on. Pretty much write down his entire lecture. Definitely would not take again, but I am grateful for all I learned from him, even if it was 8 in the morning.
Amazing guy, engaging during lecture. I would take notes the whole time during his class and would spend hours studying. He failed on the first 2 tests. He expects you to remember 110% what he says. Stay away from him unless you really can put the time commitment in this class. No resources online. Honestly, I don't know how I passed his class.
Although his lectures are engaging and you can learn alot from them, Won Lee is a pretty difficult grader. His tests all have two essay questions that take a fair amount of time to complete. His tests are nearly all writing except one matching. The Final had FOUR essay questions and your hand will feel like its falling off at the end. Good guy tho.
Prof. Lee is HILARIOUS. Super nice and laid back, lectures got somewhat redundant but I think that was just the course, not him. Awesome prof overall. Expects a lot but offers make up opportunities if you don't do well on midterm. Easily accessible outside of class. Almost switched to a religion major bc of him!
Professor Lee thinks everyone is an expert. The reading in the class is insane. Test are harsh. You need to take good notes to pass. Pretty much write as much as you can down. Use EC opportunity!
Won Lee has great, very entertaining lectures. He is also very funny, and makes the topic fun. His tests are almost impossibly hard, you must remember everything from the lectures, and be able to recite it on your essay exams--in 50 minutes. Overall, there is not enough time to complete his exams sufficiently, in the way he expects them to be done.
The lectures are enjoyable and fun. There's a lot of readings for the class, the test often has some stuff not mentioned in class but from the textbook so gotta read. The tests are pretty writing intense, have a watch on hand too. Always ask for a study guide prior to tests: ask and it will be given, if you don't ask, you won't get it.
Really funny and caring, but also went very quickly through a lot of material, and was not always transparent about what was important and what was not, especially for the midterm.
Really isn't as bad as people say. Very strict when grading, but test review sheets give everything you need to be prepared for the questions. It's very helpful to have a prior understanding of the Bible. Assignments are loosely graded, only used the textbook to study for exams. You'll be fine if you study well and do extra credit
Professor Lee is very passionate about what he teaches. His whole class is lecturing so attendance is crucial. For Rel. 121 there were a few papers and tests. The tests are difficult with A LOT of material. With every test, he offered extra credit and provided a study guide. If you put in a fair amount of studying you'll be fine.
I loved Professor Lee and his class. You can tell that he's super passionate about his subject, and he spoke in such an energetic, funny, and engaging way that I was always entertained while learning a lot of good stuff. I typed everything he said, and so the tests were a breeze. He's accommodates for you and edits the tests with your feedback.
Like he says, he's really Won in a million. Unfortunately, that's not a good thing. His lectures are not clear and are unrelated to the tests. He gives a lot of reading materials, and that's what the majority of quizzes are on, but doesn't discuss it clearly in class. I'd recommend staying away if you want to avoid a stressful class.
The summer class was a lot easier, with online forums to ask questions and discuss topics in the same vein as the week's topic. It was a three-week intensive course, which was very fast-paced but he was lenient. Attend all of the live meetings (around 5 total) and do the daily work to get a good grade.
He is very fun to talk to, and the course material is extremely accessible and informative.
Lee is really funny and interesting to listen to. Classes were 100% lecture; prepare to write everything fast because you need it all for test prep. Intense class- the study guides were HARD. Took a lot of work, and some tears, but it was good. Yes its hard, but doable if you stay on top of it. Also you dont need to read- just refer for studying.
I've seen some weird reviews here, so let's get this straight: if the reading is mandatory, then you should read. Why are you surprised if your grade drops because you just skimmed? Also, powerpoints are optional and not mandatory for professors. As long as you listen carefully, take notes, read, study, and ask questions, you should be fine.
Prof. Lee made learning online from home bearable and he was fantastic in making sure we weren't lacking in anyway compared to the in-person classes. He cares a lot about his students and it shows during class. Do the readings, watch the lectures, ask questions in class. Even if you do the bare minimum of all three, you can still keep up easily.
There is a lot of reading but he also will go over things in class. He does reading article assignments to ensure people are doing the readings but they can also be a great grade booster. He expects a lot for essays and tests so being thoughtful and detailed during readings and lectures will help a lot later on in the semester.
Professor Lee is a great guy, he's funny, nice, and easy to talk to. BUT, his class was extremely difficult. You need to be prepared to take the most detailed, fastest, hardest notes of your life. The tests were way too long to complete in one hour and his lectures were long and complicated. His class was something I have nightmares about.
BIG MISTAKE. Could barely stay awake during lecture, but when I could, it was a FAT STRUGGLE to keep up and take notes. The tests are nearly IMPOSSIBLE because they're all essays and super specific to what was in class. He is very passive aggressive when it comes to mental health and following any accommodation requirements and made rude comments.
I know Prof. Lee reads this so here goes nothing. I liked the class, I liked how Prof. Lee taught it, the dialogue presented was very insightful. Only gripe is that the class was very essay-heavy and not very homework heavy, so it was hard to gauge how you were performing really until midterm.
I really enjoyed Won Lee! I had an 8am with him and he definitely woke me up. He LOVES what he does and it shows. He also LOVESSS detail in your papers. The more detail you have the better grade you'll get. For tests, he gives you a study guide which is exactly like the test. Honestly just work and you'll do great.
The exams are impossible if you don't have excellent memory. You'll be given 15-25 words that you need 3 sentence definitions for, 15 bible verses to memorize and/or memorize the content of, and 5-7 potential essay questions. So you need to spend an unreasonably long time studying and muddy your memory with irrelevant material. My memory just cant
Professor Lee is hit or miss. Hes a really great guy, but not the best teacher. This course as a whole is pretty difficult to teach and isnt a great course. No weekly homework assignments on readings but papers are graded REALLY harshly. Never felt like I really understood the readings, and class discussions didnt help at all
he had terrible slides that had no flow. described concepts very poorly, and assigned an outrageous amount of homework. I took a 300 level engineering class during the same time period and this was way more work. lots of papers, graded by very few things. tests were impossible, less than 1/4 of the students finished on time for each test.
Awful class!! Made the whole course seem like it was nuclear engineering. Tests were unnecessarily hard. Gave too many papers. Was very rude most of the time. Could also be childish and petty at times. Would not recommend his class. Avoid him at all cost!!
As a Jewish person, I felt unsafe in his class after he went off about how the Holocaust was "God's will" at 8am on a Monday- tough way to start my week. He knew there was a jew in the class btw. Class content was interesting but teaching is unclear. Tests were difficult. Avoid him! Disappointed b/c I really like his class content but is unbearable
He is a very kind person outside of class but rarely helped students and talks way too fast. Every paper and exam needs an extreme amount of detail to get an A and he expects nothing but perfection. He does relate some Bible stories to real life so it helps and his teaching is good, but I wouldn't take him again.
Do not buy the books or Bibles he recommends. You can get through the semester without them. He is so difficult and I had to study so much. Everyday consists of reading off the power points and lecturing. Lots of papers and responses due along with group work.
Very nice and caring prof. He tries to get to know you as a person. Many think he was super hard and a harsh grader, but if you just put time and effort into your papers and studying, you'll do fine. Try and participate in class and write down everything he says and writes. Be ready to memorize a lot for tests.
Contrary to popular belief, Professor Lee was actually a good professor in REL121. He really cares about his students and really tried to get to know us this semester which I appreciated. However, If you are not willing to put the effort in, do not take him. Studying for his tests took multiple hours. Make sure to include a lot of detail in tests.
I have missed classes due to sports participation and he has told me that due to missing classes my grade will take a big hit. Is not clear when he gives instructions on papers. Has very strong opinions. Not very flexible at all. Overall 10/10 do NOT recommend
Professor Lee is a great professer. Classes are balanced with lectures and sometimes group discussions based on discussion papers. A lot to study for tests since there is only 1 test per quarter but he gives a lot of extra credit. Mainly he cares about his students and love engaging and having conversations with his students.
I think Won was an okay professor, he's a really tough grader but is very specific and detailed in his lectures. He expects A LOT of information when looking for answers on his exams and papers. He is very informative which is good but expects too much from a 100 level class. Helpful but would never take ANY of his classes ever again.
Great lectures with helpful written outlines! WL clearly cares about students & has a good sense of humor. I learned a lot. But, grading could often be unclear/arbitrary & feedback given could be confusing. Very difficult class overall. Lastly, the online course is listed as asynchronous but it actually requires lots of synchronous meetings/work.
Prof. Lee is very caring & knowledgable. His lectures were great. But IMO this class was far too difficult for an introductory-level core-required course. The tests required extreme specificity, and the grading criteria for them (esp. essay ?'s) were unclear. Essays & assignments could be graded unpredictably. Good prof overall outside of grading.
First off, Professor Lee is caring and funny just like most of these people have said. However, he expects WAY too much from a 100 level required class. Tests are extremely difficult and he is a harsh grader. Study as much as possible. Try to take a different prof if you can. Also you can easily get away without the textbook and Bible in his class.
Tough but engaging professor. Lectures are informative, but grading can be unclear. Lots of memorization required for exams. Unstuck ai proved helpful for exam prep alongside the textbook. Overall, be ready to put in significant effort to succeed in this class.
I went to this professor's office to talk to him about a test I failed. He became very angry, mocked me for crying, and wanted me out of his class. I went to the dean. He agreed to apologize to me, but continued to mock me in class. He is a department chair protected by tenure. This experience has had a lasting negative affect on my confidence.
Tests had SO much information. For one test we had to have 7 essay questions (1-1.5 pages required) prepared in addition to vocab, memorizing Bible verses, and short answer questions. There were only 3 essay questions on the test, but having to prepare for 7 was a lot of work. Lectures were good, but grading was very subjective.
