Ask him for help and he'll tell you to change your major! His tests are impossible.
He's articulate, but not a good professor. He speaks fast, often shows off his chem knowledge. However, this professor makes chemistry harder than it really is. Take another teacher

The worst teacher I have ever had, he should be fired for intentionally making tests so unrealistically hard. His test are too long for the amount of time given. His final is a novel. Personally I think he should find another job.

Great teacher! he tells you want you need to study and even gives sample exams..you just have to study them really well!

I think he's a very good teacher. I enjoyed taking his class and learned alot. I only recommend him if you want to understand chemistry not just memorize the material. He explains things very clear and once you have study your notes( !!write down everything!! ) and the practice exams and know those
This guy spends the entire time showing off his chem and then expects you to have the same level of knowledge he does when he gives a test. WAKE UP WOODY!. But I truly think he is terrible at teaching and his tests are not fair. AVOID HIM
He was probably the easiest teacher ive ever had the people rating these teachers really need to go back to high school! Just pay attention and actually try to study, its really not that hard wait 'till u get to a university
Elias is probably the Hardest teacher i've ever had. I actually ended up dropping the class, however, the stuff he taught stuck when I retook the course. Regardless, tests are extremly hard, and Lab quizes are just too much. He takes off points for the most trival things. I wouldn't take him unless you are prepared to spend HOURS a day studying.
ELIAS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE TEACHERS! HE'S FUNNY, WAY SMART, AND REALLY NICE IF YOU GET ON HIS GOOD SIDE. SURE HE DOESN'T LIKE EVERYONE, BUT DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF LIKE EVERYONE?? IF YOU THINK YOU ARE A GOOD STUDENT...TAKE HIM IF ITS THE LAST THING YOU DO!! HE CHANGED MY LIFE!

Gee whoever thinks hes hard needs to change majors, b/c you'll never make it in a UC. Elias is organized, easy and very clear, however he is not approachable at all. Throw away your book and study all the past exams and you'll get an A
he is the best teacher there is. Sure he is not easy but if you are willing to work hard you will be rewarded onv tests and the MCAt
Awesome Professor, extremely into the subject and makes notes for us to understand better. Study hard and his class will help you on the professional exams too.
He is the first step for any students to act professionaly in any fields--all the others are just for fun. Take his class once and he'll change your attitude; take him again and you'll have a new outlook in life. It doesn't matter whether you get an A or not. What matters is the growth and maturity you experience in every lesson that comes to you.
Someone here said: "whoever thinks Elias is hard will never make it in a UC". Obviously that person never took O Chem at a UC!!! By experience, the UC's O.Chem exams are way easier than Elias', and with a curve that 40% is a passing grade, you gotta be a major "tard" if you think UC O chem is hard.

he is the BEST professor at LAVC. His tests were similar to the sample exams and if you study from those as a guide and NOT memorize, you are guaranteed to get at least a B in the class.
verry hard
He is an amazing instuctor, extremely organized. you dont really need the book, just write down what he writes on the board and refer to them. He gives practice exams which if u just study from that youre practically set. All those "students" who think he's hard, i know an easy sociology teacher for u. LOL ! !
He is truly an exceptional instructor. His notes are incredible. You don't need the book. He can be intimidating because he doesn't tolerate any b.s., but if you're respectful, work hard, and show interest, he will show you the same regard that you show his class. He notices everything and truly wants you to learn. Plus, he's hot!! ;D

easy A, just study all day and u'll be fine. easy teacher, good notes/lecture, understandable and clear. Tests are as easy as 123...take him if u want to score high in the mcat

He is an OUTSTANDING teacher. He is very organized and very clear. Extremely knowledgable about the subject and helpful as well. He is also really layed back person outside lecture, which makes for a relxed enviroment for the hardest class at the college.

really hard I won't take his class again. He makes chemistry more deficult.
Very good professor. Students who whine about him being difficult obviously will not make it in a UC science class. O. Chem is a difficult subject, so be ready to study. Very approachable and wants to help, but doesn't like students who want hand outs.
Not recommended. He's very ****in hard and makes the subject of organic chemistry very confusing such as making the class bring a bluebook and write short answer questions. Also in lab there's a hands on quiz in which he makes you set up the equipment and grades you horribily.
do not take him ever ever even if you have to
very tough and hard instructor. i prefer to take organic at lacc with dr. mitchell because he's very easy and you"ll get a decent grade compared to that **** elias. so just a fair warning.
He changed soo much, its like the couple of weeks in between semesters he changed his philosophy of teaching, unbelievably hard, mixes 211, and 212 stuff together on 212 exams. the lab grading in unbelievable. He was good last semester but not now, he is a different person. Defenitly take Mitchell at LACC, MUCH MUCH BETTER + DO ABLE

I took him for 211 and 212 and he has changed a lot, he has made things harder, the TA sees the exams then provides"private tutoring" (more like private cheating) for money. If u don't get help from him you will be screwed on exams, just studying is not enough, and if u are between grades forget about it, ur getting the lower grade no matter what!

WORST TEACHER EVER. hardest class ever. doesnt explain anything. his TAs teach the class. uncomprehensible material, and he is never present in class. He has no humanly characteristics. he does not care who passes or not, and doesn't care if you are having a hard time. overall, dont take him, even if ur life depends on it. u will regret it.
very bad attitudes professor.very ****.

He is a speaking machine during lecture section. He does not really care what his students perceive. He often play chest with the tutors during lab section and does not willing to answer questions.
Currently taking Ochem at UCSD. I can safely say that Elias' class was MUCH harder than my current class. My comparison: Not only did Elias go into an absurd amount of detail, but the lack of a grading curve is unforgivable. This is OCHEM, one of the hardest lower-div classes out there...so get with the program Elias! Quit preaching your own agenda
I don't understand all the fuss about Elias being hardest teacher. Ochem is hard, period! His lecture are organzied and easy to follow. If you study his notes and do the problems from practice exams over and over again and understand the concepts, you will do just fine. I highly recommend him.

very tough course but u will learn something! he will prepare u for a real university
very hard. each person will have to bring a bluebook for exams and also he makes you do a practical lab exam in which you have to go to your locker and when he asks you to bring a lab equipment you must find it and bring it to him to check if it is the right lab equipment and checking your laboratory notebook and signing your lab book everyday.
His leactures are clear. Must attend the class to understand the material and do well in class.
I highly recommend those people to drop this class. He's a very hard professor and will give you hands on lab quizes where you have to name all the equipment you use in chem 101, 102, 211, 212. He also gives you an easy exam and he selects from topics such as "ballchinian" and have you write five pages on how the "ballchinian" relates to ochem.
I am currently taking this class and I am in day lab and getting a C and my name is "OVERACHIEVERKOV".I think I am are a true "A" student, but I am over achieving of what my status is, because I am NOT an "A" student, are full of dillusions and I am overestimating myself because I realized that I am obviously not an "A" student.
He is a really tough grader and exams are extremely difficult in. If you burly past chem 211 with a "C", you are going to take a beating in chem 212. Go to learning skills center for help or hire a private tutor or something. Those who tend to memorize stuff will not be able to survive the class, and in my class there is only like 8 people left.
Okay, this professor is awesome!! He is helpful, clear, and concise. goes over labs and tells you exactly what you should know. dont study last minute. take notes and practice the practice exams. This guy does not play games!! have FUN!!!
Make sure to find a private tutor throughout this class and you will be in great shape. I got an "A" because I hired a private tutor and was able to survive with a good grade. This class is extremely difficult, so hiring a tutor for $50 per hour is still worth it. I did 2 days for 4hrs per day with an excellent private tutor who knows the material.
Those who are complaining, are immature and need to grow up. Prof. Elias is aewsome, clear, concise, and tells you exactly what you should know, what he expects, and answers all questions that are germane to lecture. He is only seems tough if your procrastinate, dont come to class, and study last minute, your going to get what you deserve. so grow!
Prof. Elias is a tough instructor and expects students to be serious. If you don't wear closed toe shoes in lab you will be thrown out of lab and be required to take a zero. This is serious and prof. Elias will throw you out of lab. Make sure to be serious and also volunteer when prof. Elias asks you. Exams are terrible so read the book.
Extremely difficult exams and has the tendency to make your head go spinning upside down. This professor ehhh-leee-as is so knowledgable, he can make you combust by reating alkanes and O2 in an eye blink which yields CO2 + H2O. He is gunnery sgt elias and expects you to do pushups and whenever you mess up he will punish you and make you do chores.
The best chem professor ever! he is very clear, lectures are great and his notes are very clear! do practice exam because the actual tests are very similar.Subject is hard by itself but Elias makes it easier to understand it.Don't miss lectures. No curve.
Class is very tough for those who have not had elias for chem 211. It will be a nightmare, please get lost. I was a student from lacc and my name is ruckus. Exams are out of the world and makes me get headaches and my head spins upside down and around the hemisphere. He gives practical lab exams so be prepared to answer otherwise get thrown out.
Great professor!Very knowlegable and helps you a lot if you really want to learn.Do practice exams, attend every class, do labs and you will be fine.hard subject overall, but he makes it very interesting. If dont want to learn anything but get a good grade, take ochem at LATTC.Great lecture notes too.
Worst teacher I have ever had!!! He says he will do partial credit and that is crap. He is not helpful and extreamly rude. Half the class had a C or lower. I had A's in every chem class and failed his class. He is a complete and total jerk...do NOT take him. I have never hated a teacher until I took him.
Hard but I am fair....you know what, just drop the class people, you wont be able to live by the numbers....follow directions, I know who is posting these comments....would you keep posting bad comments please...alright class..uhhh uhhh uhh....my job is to stop those who are not ready to go to professional fields because you are lame...
Oh My God, what do we have here in this class, a commedian private ballchiniaran, private ballchiniyan, and private ballchinian, we are surrounded....my name is dr. jackmehoff
reminder, lab quizes will be extremely diffult for those who complain that they didnt recieved partial credit...from now on whenever private pile mess up i will not punish him, i will punish all of you...the way i see it is that you guys owe me for 1 jelly donut.
Don't expect to get a good grade, because I am hard and that I may not like you. From now on exams will be harder for CHEM 211 and much pleasant. Practical Lab quizes will be used to get rid of students from now on. Enjoy and drop this class right NOW people!!!!!
Eliminating people is how Elias works...one by one people with drop this class..i was so worried that i will not have enough time to drop the class, so after the first exam if you do bad, just drop the class otherwise it will be hard to drop the class like what i did. go to la pierce college and take ochem with Prof. Ono, much easier than Elias..
The more stuff people post here, this impacts on how difficult I make my exams...keep writing about it lame people...I'm excited to make those exams miserable for you...thank you very much...get out off my course...I may not like you,but I am fair...
Yes its not a secret that Prof Elias is hard, but OChem is a hard class in itself. I personally loved the way he taught the class: very clear & straight to the pnt. A BIG help are his practice exams; they're similar to the tests. If u can do the practice exams w/o ur notes/book w/in the given exam time.. u will do well! His notes r helping me in UC
STOP WHINING! if u're a premed, prepharm, pre-health, and u're complaining this class is hard, admit it that u dont have what it takes. this is a weeding out course, and the exams are hard becuz they prevent dumb people on becoming doctors, get it? Just study his notes, the exams are all in there. forget the text. study wisely!! and u'll do well
In addition, He takes no BS. if u follow the rules and policy, you will love going to this class, especially the labs which were fun to me. BUT..u have to maintain safety in the lab at all times, otherwise he kicks you right out the door =) Study ur Labs report thoroughly if u wanna do well on the lab quiz. overall, the class totally reflects on you
Do not argue with him otherwise he will grade you harder. Point jockers are subject to do worse in the class because they think they are entitled to the grade they want. I took this class and I was a point jocker and realized that I missed an A by one point and elias didn't give it to me. Over confident people will do bad on his exams. Be aware.
i would not recommend him to anyone. most averages on the exams were in the low 60s and he is a TOUGH grader. he is not approachable at all. whatever you do, do not take organic chemistry with him
his class is really hard and its just not worth it. and its not just the subject, he makes it harder than it should be. the assistant wasnt much help either and pretends to be on our side when in reality he always agrees with Elias. don't take him for any reason
dont take him even if your academic life depends on it. you will absolutely regret it. he is just too hard for most people and almost everyone was struggling just to pass. look at it like this, it might even be worth taking o chem at the place your going to transfer to rather than with him. thats seriously how tough and bad he is
highly recommend for those who aims to be success in life! Taking this course with him will teach u to study wisely and efficiently. Those people, who said all negative comments and mention he should try helping students, do not know him. His lecture notes are excellent, and if u show enthusiasm in learning, he'd be explaining until u understand it
His negatives far outweigh the positives by a landslide. I took him only because his class fit my schedule, but I wound up regretting it big time. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
worst o-chem teacher out there!!
i wouldt recommend him. hes too bad for most people.
Great Professor who is very knowledgable in his topic. Those who put negative reviews are just used to getting easy A's. Elias would make you truly earn your grade.Highly recommend him for ochem! it is not an easy subjct but just stay focused, ask questions and he will explain it to you 20 times if needed.Do practice exams, they definetly help.
I had Elias for Chem 211 and 212. He is far and away one of the best teachers I have found at either LAVC or UC Berkeley. His classes prepared me for a BS and I still refer to his notes while getting my MS. He is demanding, keenly prepared, and knowledgable. I took the ACS exam in OChem after his class and did not have a problem. Loved both classes
i read the reviews but was like "blahh i'll take him anyway." but that was the biggest mistake in my academic life. DO NOT take him under any circumstances
I'm already afraid of a subject like organic chemistry so i do not need to be afraid of the professor on top of that. Yet his personality makes him hard to approach. That alone is enough for you to not want to take o chem with him on top of everything else that's wrong with him
Organic chemistry both 211 and 212 are the hardest subjects even at the university for Bsc students . passing this class with a good grade means your professor is an extraordinary teacher, and also means you put all of your efforts for this class.the method of his teaching and the notes are really organized and uniqe.i seriously recommend him .
Ochem 211 with Elias was my first C grade after ~ 100 units at CC. I took 212 with him and got an A. If you make the effort, go to the discussion sects and seek help, Elias is more then willing to help. He seems intimidating but grow some balls and you'll be fine. I learned more in this class than i've learned in all other classes combined.
The best teacher in all USA. Amazing knowledge of the subject. Crystal clear lectures. The course is hard but by attending his lectures and studying at least 10 hours a week you will get an A.
Practice exams are nowhere near the how the exams are. Not to helpful and really does not prepare the students properly
Do not. Worst ever. He is disconnected from class. Not interested to see if his students understand the subject or not.
People are really lame and dumb. Do you expect a teacher to give you the same questions as your practice on an exam? Chemistry is obviously not your thing, so get out of my class. You are not putting effort in this class, that is why you are getting a bad grade. It is my job to eliminate cheaters since I'm the chemistry gatekeeper of LAVC. Haha.
Best teacher ever! Don't be fooled, you need to work your hinney in this class. Studied 40hrs for an exam and got an 98/100!
the class itself is quite tough, and the Elias is not making it easy! Yet, he is definitely very helpful, and if he sees a student trying hard, he will do everything to help. E.g. I got a D on the first test, ended up with an A in the end. His notes/lectures are very clear and organized. gave me real good foundation for taking chem classes at UCLA.
He is the best Teacher I've ever had.
He is a really tough grader and nobody usually get A's anyways for some reason. I dropped the class and there is no way I can handle the pressure of this class. If your are a -yan or -ian you will get screwed in this class because I was one and had to drop the class and weeped until jesus came. He also doesn't give grades on need to have basis.
Wow he's great. Even if you don't make the grade you're supposed to on the final exam in order to get an A , he will still give it to you if you try really hard. Best teacher ever.
This class is tough. so if youre not prepared to study everyday then dont take it. Attend lecture, do your lab, take the practice exams multiple times and go to the saturday study session and you will be fine. Work your ass off and then some to get an A. He clarifies any questions you have. You cannot slide like you did in your biology classes.
Tough grader and very hard teacher. Stranglers will not pass this class. If you are failing after the first exam you will not pass. I decided to stay and I did not manage to pass.
Very tough teacher all around. You have to follow instructions otherwise you loose points. I dropped the class after the second exam because I was a twit and a witless jackbate. Avoid at all causes and take it at la pierce or la trade tech where they will pass you.
Tough subject, great instructor. Very organized class great learning environment. In lab you actually know whats going on and can get help if needed. Lectures are clear. He offers lecture notes (notesbook) and practice exams. But dont take his class if youre not willing to give 100% b/c youll probably end up w/ a W. His TA Steven is great.
I don't want to go into details but even after I transferred out he was still my worst professor. Just don't take him. Period.
