Terrible teaching style, no connection to students, horribly boring. Please do yourself the favor and avoid at all costs.
Terrible.....Terrible...

He is horrible. He throws calc four stuff into his class while you only need to be in clac 2. Avoid at all costs. Class average less than 50%
Worst teacher I've ever had. Likes to show off how smart he is. Says "physics should be painful" that's a quote, no joke, do yourself a favor and DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!! Doesn't teach you material on the test, instead shows fancy proofs which the math is far too advanced for everyone.
Worst prof ever! Had only 7 people show to a lecture of 150. worthless. only thing worth going for is the pictures of him on his screen saver. They are hilarious. Loves coax cables. Tests are awful. Avoid at all costs.
Worst Prof ever!
Prof. Halley is by far the worst professor I have ever had. Test questions are rediculous and nothing at all like the "examples" we do in class. Lectures consist of derivation after derivation, with no real applications being taught, as well as being unstructured and completely useless.
This guy is the worst teacher that I have ever had the misfortune of ever knowing. I don't know why he thought he could ever succeed at being a professor. He belongs in a lab where he can't talk to anyone and just does PROOFS all day. His demonstrations dont ever work, and he gets chalk everywhere
Incredible, at least i am getting my worst professor out of the way my freshman year thank god.
If he were on fire I would not put him out.
If you have the misfortune of ending up in his class, DROP IT AND RUN SCREAMING IN THE OTHER DIRECTION.
Holy****... Can't believe that anybody is this horrible. And a complete ass. Spare yourself from this professor, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FROM HIM, YOU WILL NOT GET ABOVE A C. Plus, you'll definately hate physics after his class if you didn't already.
Very, very hard to do well.
This guy is pathetic. The lectures were absolutelty useless. Spare yourself the pain and NEVER take any of his classes. He is very knowledgable, but this was an introductory course and he made it way more than that. Enough said.
Y'all are a bunch of pussies. This guy knows his schtick like no other. And it's easy to get a good grade in his class as long as you put some effort into it, because those who don't drop the class don't care and lower the curve a lot. Besides what could be more funny than his hair?
He sucks!
I'm not even in this guy's class but he had major influence on the Physics Final. I have recieved at least a B on all my exams. His questions on the final gave me a 28/100. TOP GRADE was 65.8! Brought me from an A to a C+. ...BAH
If you're really interested in Physics, you'll take this guys class. He's extremely smart and extremely engaged, and if you apply yourself, you will learn alot. Assignments and tests are hit and miss, and sometimes very difficult, but I recomend him to any physics major.
Professor Woods is a brilliant man who gives teaches more material than what is expected, which might not seem like it, but it is a GOOD THING! If you want to learn physics, he's an amazing professor to get to know. Struggling through his class just makes you better then the other classes by miles! Get more for your tuition with JWH.
Nice professor if you stay after class to talk to him, but otherwise is cold in class.Tests/quizzes r extremely difficult. Don't expect to get help from TAs b/c some of the material is beyond them. Uses very old fashioned style of teaching that leaves students confused & frustrated. Pop quizzes are setup as a trap to lose points. Bad intro teacher.
He doesn't teach very well, assumes the students are at a much higher level than they are in an intro course and he's tests are super difficult. Class average on all midterms was around 40%. You can get a good grade if you work A LOT, if you get him - hope you get a good TA too.
seriously, it will be a sheer act of god if I pass this class. He rambles, mumbles, and generally makes no sense. I come out of that class significantly stupider than when I went in.
I dropped his class like it was hot. I suggest you do the same. Trying to pass is pretty futile.
Horrible teacher!
It was a tough class. I walked out of the final sure that I had failed the class, but I got a B-. The exams, though very difficult, are curved a lot, so it's easier to do well. Lots of cool demos. Harder, though, than other physics sections. Others in the same class in different sections got to use crib sheets on exams - we didn't.
This man was the inspiration for a game I like to play called "Professor or Bum?" His yellow teeth, glazed over eyes, and horrible, horrible body odor make him unpleasant in any circumstance. Not only do I think that Woods is an awful instructor, but an awful human being. He should never be allowed to teach, let alone a freshman class.
They say only the good die young. Woods is already 118.
Most incomprehensible communicator, especially when it comes to written questions.
Woods is sick.
Extremely dull and hard to understand. Class only provides a shallow understanding of too many things, so you won't learn anything. Very difficult to do well on graded things, but if you attend all the lectures and answer clicker questions you're grade will double with extra credit points.
The most disrespectful professor I have ever met. Never admits to his faults and doesn't care to understand how or why people do not think as he does. This makes coming into contact with him very frustrating and unpleasant.
Vague. Doesn't motivate or derive most of the material so it is impossible to see the connection. Just does not understand students and always claims "we'll come back to this," but never does.
Halley Halley Halley. I really like him, but he is a HORRIBLE teacher. Do NOT take a class from him if you aren't a genius. He's one of those people that is too smart to communicate with people. Take a class, you'll understand what I mean.
I think he's a really smart man with very poor communication skills. Very dry lecturer. Fairly hard to follow, and gives vague and sometimes unfinished explanations. Occasionally forgets his laser pointer is on and shines it in people's eyes. Do not take a class from him if you can avoid it.
Halley does not know how to teach. His tests are not based on anything he lectures on. You'd learn more about physics talking to people who don't believe gravity exists. Terrible, terrible teacher. Please don't take him if you have a choice.
Idiot.
Worst Professor Ever!! Boring, Stupid, Confusing. I am more confused about physics now than i was before i took the class. Dont Take him. the one good thing is he gives 2 extra credit points per question during class and there are usually about 4 questions per class. Dont take him if you dont have too!
I had him for a freshman seminar called What is Time, thinking it would be interesting. It should be, but he manages to kill all interest. Not to mention, he is an unreasonably hard grader. Lots of work, muttering, and non-sequitur lectures. Also, he lacks any sense of clarity. Nice guy, bad teacher.
Terrible. Terrible. Terrible. Definitely the worst Professor/Teacher I have ever had. He is an incredibly dry lecturer, hard grader with a class that did not matter (Freshman Seminar), and lacked all social skills.
This is by far the worst class I've taken at the U with the worst professor I've had at the U. The lectures are impossible to follow. The TAs are all just minions of Halleys that grade just as hard. I mean come on... this is supposed to be the easiest physics course and I have yet to learn anything. My only suggestion is to use your clicker.
One of the hardest classes ever taken as an introductory course. Workload is ridiculous. Labs are alright. Exams are 10 multiple choice and an essay question, but do study. All of the questions are calculations. Scores were quite low, but ATTEND LECTURE FOR CLICKER POINTS!!!
He made this introductory course extremely work heavy. Our TA even told us that he thought it was ridiculous. He's not absolutely horrible at teaching but he's not good by any stretch.
In brief. It is a disaster
Worst professor I've had in my 5+ years of schooling. Hands down. Don't ever take his class, no matter what. I did not learn a thing. He is absolutely terrible.
The homework is well in advance of the lecture material; for this reason we had to ask for extensions multiple times so that we can cover the material that is actually necessary to do it. Plus the textbook is not well-adapted, is very dense and we had an overly long final; thank God we had an easy grader for the homework!
Worst professor I've had. Zero communication skills, difficult exams, and impressive condescension skills. Doesn't explain anything more than once; if you mess up, expect him to smirk at you and comment on how "simple" the concept is. Avoid at all costs.
Unless you are already a physics whiz, do not take a class taught by this professor. It's nearly impossible to follow his lectures. They are completely unstructured and do not explain the material in any understandable way. It feels like he is constantly on autopilot. There is zero indication he has put any effort into lesson planning.
I'm sure j Woods is a nice and interesting guy outside of the class, but do not take this class unless you already have a great understanding of physics. I took this course to fulfill my science req., and it looked interesting. Absolutely not. So difficult. The lectures don't even cover what is on the exam, which is just straight formula work.
Poor communication skills. Lectures are not well structured and are difficult to follow. Labs are more clear cut, buyback they generally don't correspond to the lecture material, and neither does the book. Homework oftentimes doesn't have the correct information to solve the problems, which Halley may or may not post 3 hours before hw is due.
Worst professor I've ever had. We're only into our 4th week and I already think I need to drop the class. Lectures our unclear, problems are impossibly difficult with the lack of instruction/guidance. Gives one simple equation and then proceeds to ask us very difficult questions. I think the average on our first test will be below 40%. A disaster
The problem with this guy is that there is no clear problem-solving strategy. Sometimes when he works out problems in class I think--Oh, I would have never thought of solving it that way. So it would all be interesting if I wasn't required to attain his level of creative-genius problem-solving. Ridiculous. Got 102% in 1101, failing 1102.
Run. He is very smart but is the worst professor I have ever had. You will not learn how to do the homework or tests by attending class or reading the book. No one understands what to do. Tests aren't curved either.
Halley's the kind of bad professor you have to see to believe. Incoherent lectures leave us all downright perplexed and questioning how he makes calculations, which are often wrong. Answering extra-credit clicker questions correctly and having an easy TA are your lifeline here. Seriously, he and his class are so terrible it's almost hilarious.
Woof. The guy is smart, there is no denying that-but, there is much to be desired. He lectures quietly, doesn't update student access to powerpoints unless "demanded", explanations are not clear, homework and tests often have mistakes in them, he just can't teach. Our test averages are near 30%. I'm a great student and this class has me sweating.
His tests are outstandingly hard and poorly written. Professor Halley doesn't seem to care about the stress he causes his students.
Professor Halley is awful. He is unprofessional and rude and is unable to convey the material. His powerpoint's are useless and difficult to understand. The book is useless as his exam questions are not related to the book. Halley offers many clicker questions which account for extra credit, therefore lecture is necessary. Exams are impossible.
The only reason I'm doing well in this class is because I already know Physics. You won't learn anything from this professor in class. My first language is English, and I could barely comprehend his test questions because they were written so poorly. Come to class and do the iClicker problems for extra credit points.
He puts things on the test he has never taught. My first exam I got a 12 out of 50, and it wasn't just me. I know a friend who got a 17, and one who got 7. I asked him him how to study for the exam, and he told me to make my own questions up. The only good thing about this class is the ta does the lab. You will need to do the clicker questions!
Get ready to be confused. Hopelessly confused. The lectures are completely necessary as you get extra-credit from them, but do not expect to be entertained. Monotone lecturer who is constantly going down rabbit-holes. Unless you already know physics you will fail the first test. If you're looking for a physical science requirement, look elsewhere.
This guy mumbles through his lectures and expects everyone to understand what he says. He expects everyone to be as versed in physics as he is.
Overall, I would not recommend taking this course. Professor Woods is generally condescending about the material (homework have nothing to do with the course) and the course load is not worth it. We had 20 people initially in the class and at the end of the semester, we had 6. That should say enough about the class
The lectures are essential to pass the course due to extra-credit clicker questions. He never engages with students, writes terribly small, makes mistakes often, and expects students to understand every concept that he mumbles. Doesn't curve tests, homework questions are written poorly/don't make sense, and he blames students for not understanding
The professor is incredible condescending towards questions in class. Every test given this semester has had an issue on it with numbering. Several questions with the same number leading to confusion and a "10 question" test that turned out to be 12 questions. He doesn't seem to know what's going on in the lab's until another professor helps him.
I had no idea what was ever happening in this class. He doesn't even lecture/test on the content in the textbook, so good luck trying to supplement the lectures with the text. Don't take this class if you don't have to. I failed the first test even when I thought I understood the content. Run.
He is not a bad professor, but his lectures can be hard to listen to and the slides are not organized at all so taking notes is a but challenging. He does offer extra credit "clicker points" if you pay attention in class. I would recommend reading the book for the homeworks and quizzes because like I said the lecture makes taking notes hard.
im in his freshman seminar How Likely is Extraterrestrial Life? & this is the absolute worst class ever. if you are currently enrolled in / considering taking this class, DONT. his lectures are dry and hard to follow, and NOTHING ever makes sense. the paper & 20 min presentation suck. he gives pop quizzes. do yourself a favor and DROP THIS CLASS
Honestly, good professor. His lectures can be heavy, but he talks about really interesting stuff that makes you truly think. Although the class was difficult, I gained a lot of knowledge from it. Its definitely worth taking some of his classes especially his freshman seminar. And the man is smart, super smart.
Horrible teacher. Explains nothing then gets mad at you when you don't understand. He got mad for not taking his advice on a paper but never gave any advice in the first place. His exercises are not explained by him and make no sense. Would never take another class by him.
Not trying to rub salt in the wound, and I am an optimistic person, but worst professor I have ever had. He gets sassy with his students, has terrible time management, skips extra credit questions that we need, finally releases a study guide the night before the exam, messes up his own questions and answers, and expects way too much from us.
Horrible professor. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I am almost done with this course and have learned next to nothing. Homework has nothing to do with readings or lectures. He gets mad at his students for not understanding concepts that he mumbles about. Save yourself the torture and don't take this class.
Absolutely terrible experience.
Regardless of how intelligent you are, it doesn't make you a good teacher, and this guy is clear evidence of that. Not only is he completely disorganized with his class structure, but the way he talks to his students is anything but constructive. When students come to him with questions, he is condescending and hardly tries to help them understand.
Roughly 90% of the class ended up dropping, even people who were very interested in the topic of the class. He is generally condescending when grading work and answering questions. In addition to that he expects you to know things that he has never taught and gets angry when you don't.
He grades you very harshly on the weekly assignments. Just trying does not matter, it has to be perfect. Tech illiterate so canvas is very messy and you can't find anything. Does not mention there is a PRESENTATION you have to provide a slideshow for a week before the paper you are presenting on is due.
Whatever you do DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! All of the material he present is super confusing and he expects you to know things that were not even talked about in lecture. He's really bad with technology and the canvas cite is super confusing. He also grades assignments super late which can very annoying when trying to figure out your grade..
This is a VERY theoretical physics course, it only gets harder as the semester goes on. The content is already confusing, and his lecture creates more questions than it answers. The final assignment is a 15 page paper and pres, unheard of for a freshman class. It's only 2 credits, it's not worth that. Also, he doesn't keep an updated grade book.
Worst professor I have every had, which is saying something. Just derived formulas in class and was completely useless. Technological skills were not there. Homeworks and tests were tough. I had less than a 50% as my final grade and got a B. The students in his class tried to petition the university to fire him. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!
Dr. Halley is difficult to understand but he enjoys teaching. Sometimes he forgets that freshman do not have a in-depth understanding of quantum physics but if he is reminded of this he will give a very good explanation of it. I enjoyed his visuals and metaphors, and the freedom and resources he gave us to work on our final paper
AVOID DISCUSSION SECTIONS AND LECTURES WITH HIM AT ALL COSTS. He seems confused throughout the entire class, he shows up late, and he even randomly had us switch to using a different room (without announcing it over email) because he was having a hard time remembering where our typical room was. His "teaching" is merely incomprehensible mumbling.
He was a discussion prof in this class, not main at least. He is kind and clearly loves physics, but he can't teach for the life of him. He is very confused in class, can't figure out what topic to teach, he writes tiny, talks as a whisper, never finishes the worksheet, never explains anything. We all were failing. Try Paul Haines for discussion.
He's the worst professor I've had at the U so far. His exams does not make sense, no matter how much you study you won't do good in them. Skip his class if you can.
Do not take a class with this professor he does not teach the material at all. I was in an intro physics class and I had to teach myself everything. He made quizzes extremely difficult with extremely low class averages.
Prof Woods is a nice person and clearly loves physics. He's smart and it shows but he was horrible at introducing physics to first time learners. It was so bad that on week 12 of the semester, our class got a new professor. I would only recommend him if you're already well versed in physics. My only saving grace was my TA who understood our agony.
