If you ask for help you may get yelled at for not paying attention. He has a heavy accent and is insecure about it. If you say you don't understand he takes it as a personal attack on his ability to teach. I had a 62%avg. and the highest grade in class.
he has a FUNNY accent. he is very hard to understand and most important, he expect alot from studant. NEVER EVER TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HIM.

The students who get yelled at have attitutes. They feel they are entitled to an education and aren't used to being held accountable. He can be difficult to understand. He expects you to learn from the book. If you need excessive hand holding, take this class from a different teacher. Whiners!
Terrible teacher, i had a general knowledge of statistics before i went into his class, now i feel like i lost all that. he yells at you for challenging some things he says... and he is wrong quite often, ive caught him.. hehe. if you want to learn from someone better try ronald mcdonald.
Dr YE, is a very hard instructor... instead of helping students, he wants to talk about his life.. how much he gets pay, about his smart daughter and eventually how he became commmunist. it is very hard to follow his lecture..althoug i got a B.
It is impossible to understand what he says " you undahstand?". He blabs on about his life growing up and his daughter and son being smart. If you want to be insulted daily, told to drop out, and would like to figure out what he is saying, this class is for you. Seems to have some psych probblems.
This is the worst teacher I have ever had. I couldn't understand him at all. He wasted most of the class time talking about his family and how smart they all are. He cant even teach! He doesn't explain anything at all. This teacher should be fired.

Dude I feel bad if u have to take him i'm currently in his 173 class and he thinks we're all geniouses because we got to that level but come on I had cripe for 172 way better he helped u understand by making u do plms in class Ye just says "U AGREE" and then moves on without even hearing us say yes.

I have got A in this class, and I love this class. Yeah, he speak Chinese English, but even my friend is chinese, she still doesn't understand him.... Chinese 101 won't help u, go get a PHD in Chinese. But if u are really smart, u can still get an A in this class, or just buy an expensive calculator. It can do all the work for u.
I really don't understand why all the negative reviews. He trully isn't that bad. If all u need is a basic math course...then don't take him b/c it's not an easy "A" Buuuuuut if u are continuing your math & science education then he's just what u need! He really is a sweet person deeeep down--i mean,he bought us pizza for our final day of class :)
Easiest A i've gotten in Math. I took his class during the summer and bumped the whole time and i got an A> Really good explaining and good actitude in his office hours.

You just have to listen to him. Dr. Ye is very difficult when it comes to teaching, but if you work hard in his class you will succeed.
He is probably one of the best teachers I'veeve had. I didn't do to well, but that was my bad. If Istill lived in Modesto, I would condsider taking anothe calss from him. He really inspired how I work today. I may not had done well in the class, but I feel like I'm womewhat a better person.

Hard to understand, uses weird sayings. Took a 1.5 hour class of his, an hour was spent on him talking about himself or some other story from who knows where, then the left half hour was so incredibly fast it was almost impossible to keep up, out of 30 I know that 19 dropped his class
Has a very thick accent. Talks about his children and himself who are geniuses by his standard. Suggestions take him for the summer session. You will spend the first 30 min. getting used to his accent, Thank God he's talking about himself or his family. The rest of class don't let him intimidate you or he'll eat you alive. GET A STUDY GROUP!!!
He is extremely hard. He is hard to understand because of his accent. Very egocentric, likes to talk about himself. Gets mad if you ask questions, gets mad if you don't. You just can't win with him. Worst teacher ever. Don't take him. He makes you feel horrible and stupid. I work my butt of and it hasn't helped. Very critical!
Very smart instructor, I've had him twice. Would take him again if I had the chance. Strong accent, expects you to do homework ahead of assignment, then ask questions. Will answer ALL questions in class. First test hard, designed to weed out non-serious students. If you can't THINK ON YOUR OWN, don't take him! I had highest grade in both classes.

im just glad i see there are others who feel my pain, this guy is horrible. i really have no idea why he is still teaching, the worst thing is i think he is only 1 of 2 teachers who teaches statistics. its true what they say he talks about his daugther a lot and its hard to understand. the classes seem sooooooooooo long because its extremely boring

he seems to be hard becuase of his thick accent, but when u pay attention and just do ur work when he tell you! you will pass his class for sure. And when it comes to the test, he put only easy one on the test . Remember just do what he tell you and ur get an A for sure!
Horrible teaching, but key is to survive. I took him in summer for 6 weeks class and I hated it but stayed in the class and did my HW. I passed the class with "B".
Best math teacher I've known in my life -- however not for most others. 172 with Jarret was a nightmare, so I dropped -- dreading it will be the same with Ye over a condensed Summer schedule.. turned out to be the best option. Definitely recommend people to take their hard courses over Summer - its only 6 weeks and u concentrate only on 1 subject
Quite Possibly the hardest class I've taken. 6 week summer course at breakneck speed. I ended up with a B so curve must be liberal. He talks about his family alot and claims to be able to do 10 x 10 matricies in his head. Tests include problems in future chapters (Taylor series on parametric test!!!). If you don't mind feeling subordinate...Good luck!
claims he went from highschool straight to graduate school. summer 122 class rocked, so i took him again. lots of work to do as is with all math classes. fall 171 in progress, he's like a math rockstar. his best story is when his grandfather went into the mountains of china to form a theorem for an unsolvable problem. and he never returned.
Horrible teaching skills.He has a thick accent so you cannot really understand what he is sayin. He jiberjabbers alot so if you want to get to learning you just have to wait till hes done talking about his life. The semester isn't even over and hes already called three students stupid. over and over again.
This class is like an independent study, pass the 4 tests and final you will get an A but you will get no help from the teacher along the way. Not only can you not understand his words, he does not teach the material with any clarity, just talks about his family and his intellegence instead. Take this class if you can handle an independant study.

He wasn't the easiest teacher, but If you STUDY you should have no problem getting an A! He also gives you an A if you get an A on the final. I recommend him if your good with the calculator!
All the people who are whining about Dr. Ye being a horrible teacher must be lazy. Not only is he an awesome teacher who teaches you exactly what you need to know and is willing to take extra time to help you one-on-one if you approach him, but he also tells you before an exam what he'll be testing you on so you know what to study. He's great!

He is very hard to understand. He teaches very little and talks about his life alot. Don't ask a question unless you want to be made to feel stupid.
Honestly, this class is hard. Dr. Ye is a nice guy though, he is ALWAYS willing to help, even during his office hours. He tells you what's gonna be on the exam. Work HARD, read the book, and study!! if you get 80% or above on the final, you get an A, no matter how you did on your previous exams. Dr Ye is a TOUGH teacher, but definitely a NICE guy!
Dr. Ye is by far my favorite professor of all time!! The trick it to go to class, go to office hours, do homework and ask lots of questions. If he knows that you are really working hard he will see it and be very willing to help. He almost turned me into a math major, I loved his class so much.
Bottom line: if Ye likes you, you will pass his class. Ye can be hard to understand, and he has been known to belittle students in front of the whole class. But if you do what he wants, like come to class and do your homework, you will do fine in his class.

All of the people who are defending him obviously were lucky enough to be in a class with kiss ups because thats what this teacher wants. He is the worst teacher on Earth. No respect for Americans or our country. We had to find the problem the way he taught us or it was WRONG! Math problems result in one answer no matter how you get there.Hate him
I used to love math, but this class killed my passion because he did not explain things very well. He just assumed that we knew exactly how to do something because he always wrote everything on the overhead. He was slightly helpful when going to him in person, but didn't care much. I've been an A student for years and had to settle for a low B!

I respect this prof a lot.And if-while he's in the middle of a story-you have a question that can't wait, kindly remind him about math, he was (at least in my class) more than willing to help. But pay attention, if he has to answer the same question more than once, he can get testy. That's understandably his biggest pet peeve.(NO, I'm not Chinese.)
He is not as bad s people make him sound. If you are really bad at math I wouldnt recommend him though. He does spend a lot of time telling stories and talking about himself but thats what made me enjoy the class. Just make sure you do your work and study and you'll be fine.
You guys are idiots for not choosing this guy as a teacher. No one in our class got below a B! We don't have to memorize formulas or anything, he lets us use the calculator the entire semester, even finals! If you get a B on the final, you get an A in the class! This was the easiest A i have ever received. TAKE HIM TRUST ME.

this is the worst professor on the earth..ya you might get an A if you pass the final with an A..but thats practically impossible. i cannot understand one word that comes out of house mouth and he does not teach you how to do the work (thats his job right?) it really is an self study class you have to be willing to teach yourself
He is the only stats teacher that lets you use a graphing calculator. He doesn't teach the material, you have to teach yourself. doesnt collect homework but you must do it. He only shows you how to do shortcuts on the calculator then talked about himself the entire period. but if you get an 80% or better on the final then you get an A in the class.
Wonderful teacher, great communicator, explains everything clearly, never talks about his family or kids, enjoys teaching! (Just Kidding)

This was THE ABSOLUTE WORST class I have ever taken in my life.Dont take any of his classes I did all the homework and never missed a class and did extra credit but still got a D.Even if you try your best you still wont pass.He's the most conceded person ever too.
Not even sure if I passed yet, but I thought I would write a review first. So, he is a super nice guy, and quite interesting. He SAID he was retiring after this year but who knows. This professor is horrible. He would rather tell you stories about himself than teach you math. When you do have questions he makes you feel like an idiot by saying something like "I was doing this in junior high." I do not recommend this instructor whatsoever. I usually have and A or B average but he is not helpful at all.
I can't particularly agree with this teacher's style of teaching, but I do enjoy his humor. This class is hard, but he loves it when the students ask questions, and he really helps the student learn the material. If you go to his office he will help you. Follow the syllabus and study the material and you will do well.
Very smart but not a good teacher. Just talks about himself and teaches different methods of doing math that aren't in the book. Wants you to do it a specific way or you fail. I do not recommend him at all. It's time to retire!
This Professor would be fun to hang out with but really shouldn't be teaching. I like his storys and all, but him telling me how he jumped straight to graduate school dosen't help my math skills. Also, he'll teach you how to do somthing, and will put somthing totally different on the tests. To be honest I don't reccomend this class.
A very challenging class, but if you STUDY HARD and DO your HW (even when he doesn't collect it) you SHOULD be able to pass this class!! Plus, if you get an 80% or better on the final you automatically get an A in the class!! I recommend taking at least pre-calc before taking this class (if you only took Math 90 but got an A you might still do ok)
Very interesting man. Brilliant. But, from a student perspective...he talks far too much about himself instead of talking or discussing math. I found myself going to class to hear his stories instead of to learn about statistics. I learned everything I needed about stats from the book...except how to use the graphing calculator.
He is a very smart man and brilliant mathmatition, but a horrible teacher. He spends more time talking about his past accomplishments then teaching math.

This professor is absolutely horrible, he spends most his time talking about how great he is and how stupid we are. His teaching methods aren't the best, he would skip steps on how to do a problem.
He is a wonderful teacher. He cares about his students. I don't mind his stories because they're interesting and plus I don't like to sit in class and learn about math all day. IF i don't understand something, he is always willing to help me understand it. I'm glad i took his stat class.

HORRIBLE! He spends 90% of class time talking about things irrelevant to math. 10% attempting to teach. He'll show you things not relevant to the course and gives little instruction to the material at hand. Not to mention the language barrier. He can't say what he's thinking in his head effectively. He's far to smart to be teaching math 90.
If you are only decent at math and do not understand absolutely everything already, it will be impossible to learn anything from this teacher. Half the time he talks about ancient Japanese history and when he actually is "teaching" math he doesn't explain it. He also gets mad at you if you don't understand it.

He's a very good teacher, he knows his subject and teaches you easy ways to do the actual math problems. Yes he's kinda hard to understand the first days of class but you'll get used to it. I enjoyed taking this class because i actually learned a lot of new ways to do math. i recommend him.(:

From challenging the textbook author to asserting his authority over the class to exam problems that reflected his unusual and barely comprehensible accent to spending 3/4 class time telling stories completely unrelated to the material, Dr. Ye is the most controversial "prof." @ MJC. I got an A but have no idea how well prepared I am for adv course
Dr. Ye is an awesome teacher. Yes, he does have an accent but if you take the time to listen and ask questions he will help you. He does tell a lot of stories but listen closer, he is trying to encourage you. Dr. Ye always took the time to help me and I appreciate all the time he spent helping me. He is a great teacher, very wise.
