really good teacher
Very hard to understand. He can't pronouce the "th" sound.
Needs to learn how to speak English.Knows his subject matter well, but its hard to understand new concepts when you can't understand what he's saying. He seems like a decent guy; just needs to take some English classes I guess.
Its hard to understand what he says because he is Chinese
I took an online class, so I didn't have the comprehension problems that others talked about. The class was fairly easy. I didn't dislike him or his assignments at all.
BEST TEACHER I HAD AT CLC! Yes he is Chinese but he is a amazing teacher. He knows what he is talking about and you definitely learn something. After Earth Science I took his Field Geo class in the South West it was great. We went camping for a week, learned a lot and got to roam freely in Vegas. It is because of him I am now majoring in Geology.
Didn't help you if you asked.. Couldn't teach!
I took his online class, he seemed to be helpful. He would write back very quickly and help out. His test were hard, but everything else was fairly easy.
While he is trying very hard, the subject material he teaches just isn't interesting, and unfortunately he is unable to impart his interest in this field to his students. Still, I feel bad for the guy, he's trying his best. I hope he keeps at it.

Zhai tries hard to be a nice teacher, but his tests are impossible to try and study for, and although the labs somewhat help, his methods of grading are so anal rentative that its just not a fun class to take at all.
Class sylabus caused much confusion about which chapters would be on tests. Expect to ace one test and bomb the rest. He's veru defensive and anal about his grading techniques. For his online classes, his lecture notes are ineffective study material.
he is a very nice guy and personality wise there is nothing wrong w/him except at times he is kind of hard to understand. But what i really disliked about this class is that we spent way too much time learning about frickin rocks!!! this guy is way to interesting in the different types of rocks and how they are formed and blah blah blah! so if you love rocks then this is definitely the class for you! and if not, well i suggest you take this class with a different proffesor.
Hands Down the WORST Professor I have ever had. 1 he thinks all the students are going to be geologists and therefore thinks that we should be as dedicated as he is. WRONG he teachers this 120 LvL class as if it were a 3 or 4 hundred LvL course. Not very helpful in class or out of class for that matter. Worst teacher ever.
Read chapters 1-3 for test 1 and read chapter 4-5 for lab quiz 1. Lab 1 and test 1 are on the same day but chapters 4-5 will be on test 2. If this confuses you, then you will spend the entire semester confused.
HE NEEDS TO GO!!!!!! That class was the hardest class I've taken and I didn't even pass the damn thing. His tests are completely ridiculous and hard. He doesn't give enough credit. AVOID HIM! Listen to what people are saying about him...why is he still here?!!!
Difficult class? Yes! "Worst professor ever"? Not by any stretch of the imagination. You will have to work hard, and at times Dr. Zhai is hard to understand. However, looking at some of the spelling of errors of those who are hypercritical of this teacher, maybe they would have benefited from a few more teachers demanding a slightly higher standard
Dr.Zhai is a very approachable person, who cares about his students success. He assist students before and after class, plus he offers various office hours for students who struggle with the concepts being taught. In addition, a student can email him and he always replies back quickly. Dr. Zhai had extensive knowledge on this subject matter.
This was a field course experience that was very phyiscally challenging, yet very fun and educational. Dr. Zhia is very knowledgable in regards to rocks, faults, and all that pertain to this subject matter. He is also very helpful and cares about his students academic success. I have taken 2 courses from him and would take more.
Hard Class, YES. However you will not find a more caring and willing to help professor. Class is much harder for those taking it online, but he does allow online students to attend as many of his regular classes as you like and that really helps. If a dunce like me can get a "B", anybody can, but you have to be willing to work.
This class is not easy, but it is NOT impossible. You must have time to dedicate to the class, and be willing to participate. In fact, participation was one aspect of the online course I really enjoyed. Much of my learning came from that part. Additionally, Dr. Z. was quick in his replies, which showed his own dedication to the class.
Dr. Zhai is a very good and helpful teacher. I have taken two of his courses (soon to be three). Whenever I needed help he was a teacher you could count on to be there. His classes are challenging, but at the college level it is good to be challenged. He gives 110% as a teacher and is always there to help you succeed.
Great Class- Field study Black Hills
One of the many great qualities of Dr. Zhai is his sincere care of his students and never-ending patience. You would always feel challenged and encouraged in the same time. Isn't this a college experience all about?
Very helpful. Tests are very hard though and is hard to understand at times.
Do not take this class. One of the worst forms of teaching I have ever seen. Plan on studying 12 hrs a week if you want to get a decent grade!
Truly awful. Seems more concerned with field trips abroard than teaching introductory geology. Can't believe CLC awards lab credit for this course--you don't do any "lab" work! You would be better advised to take Environmental Science with someone like Paul Sweet than Earth Science with Dr. Zhai. A decent enough individual, but a horrible teacher!
Looking over Dr. Zhai's reviews I notice students who took field trips with him are fairly fond of him, while those who suffered through GEO 120 with him are less than complimentary. He's hard to understand, often contradicts the text which he relies heavily on, and his tests are more confusing than difficult. I won't take another class with him.
Language barrier a big problem. Poor instructions. Unresponsive to student complaints.
Exciting field courses. Very helpful if you seek it out. Tough but fair.
All you need to do is participate and understand the concepts. I GAURANTEE that if you do things the way he says to that you can get an A. Anybody that is willing to work can get an A. Life isn't always going to be easy, and neither will college. Xiaoming has been a great professor and friend to me. I am signed up for a field trip this summer.
He is one of the nicest guys and is truly there for you if you need him,but really is not that great of a teacher.Mind you, this is a 100 level course, and he tests you with questions similar to 300-level tests I've taken. We're in an introductory class--he seems to forget that when he writes his tests which are way more difficult than they should be.
Not a good teacher. Not helpful and doesn't care if you have the materials for the tests.
I really enjoying having Xiaoming as a teacher on the Black Hills trip. He explains the material thoroughly and uses lots of visual aids which are very helpful during his lectures. The classes he teaches are a bit of a challenge but you will learn a lot from them! Great teacher!
Way too hard! This is supposed to be an intro course, people who have no interest in science but need it as a req should be able to do reasonably well. He is very hard to understand, not good at explaining things and is down right unfair. This is CLC not Duke University COME ON DOWN! Avoid him like the plague, its too late for me, save yourselves.
I got an A in this class but I DID have to work my ass off. He's definitely not an easy teacher, but he is a great one. He's not for everyone, but if you work hard he recognizes it and gives you credit. I learned more in his class during one semester than any other classes I've taken. But like I said...it wasn't easy, but it was way worth it.
Very good teacher, Very hard class, Lots of oppurtunity!
Dr Zhai is a caring instructor who is open to suggestions when students come to him directly and he is willing to spend whatever time the student is willing to put in toward the subject. He is not an easy professor, but this is not high school this is college, it is supposed to be a step to the next maturity level. Put in the effort and he notices.
I hate this class. He is rude and harrasses his students into participating. He does not follow his syllabus. He doesnt teach the material on the day it is supposed to be taught. His accent is so thick it is impossible to understand what he is saying. In short, this class was horrible and the teacher was worse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you ask a question make sure you didn't already talk about it in class because he will treat you as if you are incompetant. He rarely answers a question and by the end of class you will still wonder what the answer is. Don't sign the participation sheet! He will still harrass you about participating even if you didn't sign it.
This class was not at all what I expected. Tests are HARD! No simple multiple choice either. The multiple choice are difficult at times and many short answer questions as well. This guy knows his stuff and wants you to know it ALL too! This seemed more like a course for someone majoring in Geology, not taking it for a lab requirement. Tons of work!
Please Please dont take this class...unless you want to devote many hours of studying to fail. Honestly this is the hardest class ive taken. He is really nice and helpful but his 8 TESTS are an overload.
His tests are so hard and it makes it really hard to get a good grade when no homework is assigned and your grade is solely tests and 1 research paper. This is the worst class that I have taken =(
He likes to talk about his son a lot. The homework had nothing to do with what he taught or the book. He is one of the hardest prof I ever had. If you ask though, he really does care. When he says he wants you to study 12 hours outside of class each week, he is not kidding. VERY HARD - Supposed to be for non-science majors - YEAH RIGHT
I took this class on-line & wished I'd taken it with a lecture. I LOVED this class & it's not my major. I did get an A, but I worked for it. All the questions I had were answered & I was not made to feel "idiotic". This is COLLEGE, not high school, the responsibility for understanding the material is yours. Will look for other classes he teaches!!
Xiaoming is a wonderful professor. Yes, his class is difficult, but we learn by being challenged, and that's what he does. Getting an A wasn't easy, A LOT of reading and studying were involved, but I learned so much and now really love Earth Science. His accent is not a problem, he's helpful, and best of all, very passionate about what he does.
It took me until about the last month of the semester to realize that when he was saying sandists he was actually saying scientists. VERY hard to understand and a difficult teacher.
Very difficult for a non-science major class. He won't directly answer any questions and offers no assistance in the on-line class beyond telling you to read the book and labs. Some actual teaching would be helpful! He does not tell you about lab errors until you have spent hours trying to figure out the issue on your own and point them out.
I took this class as a hybrid. It was extremely difficult. The tests covered too much info at 1 time & when My classmates or I tried to inform him about our frustrations he would say that we need to spend 15 hrs a wk reading. The Labs arent in the book and that is the hardest part. This class not recommended to anyone not major in E. Science
Xiaoming is a tough professor but if you do what he says, study hard and engage in the classroom, you can get an A!
Terrible teacher. Beginning of semester, he stated that he does not want anyone to take nots. At midterm, he denied that comment even though we all reiterated to him that he said that, and which is why we can never write the powerpoint notes. Gets off topic WAY too much. Class never truly starts until 30 mins in. AWFUL CLASS.
Terrible terrible experience. Taking earth science online was a disaster. Open note lab test with things that were NOT covered in the lab notes that we were given to teach ourselves with.
Xiaoming assigns a fair amount of reading, but does no teaching to accompany it. He spends over half of class time talking about the responsibility of students opposed to instructing (his responsibility.) He refuses to help when people have questions. I've never encountered such an unhelpful "educator". Avoid him at all costs.
It's a waste of time and effort if you're not a major. Save yourself some hassle and pick a different class
Prof is inarticulate and unable to convey the material. There are handouts and videos galore, repeating the same garbled "explanations" that bear little relation to the homework or tests. I managed to get a good grade but was extremely frustrated with how hard I worked to learn absolutely nothing about earth science. Take a different class!
Dr. Zhai really is passionate about his work. He knows a lot about the subject and he is quite a nice if you try in class. But, he grades VERY tough, and expects you to understand some incredibly hard concepts on your own. This class is so much harder if you can't make time to go to the school to meet with him. I don't recommend for that reason.
Super hard class and hard teacher. I didnt think taking earth science would be so difficult, take another class or with another teacher if you have the option.
I worked harder in this class than I expected. That turns out to be a good thing because I learned something new. Regarding other evaluations of this instructor, since when is education about looking for classes that contain no rigor? Grow-up, be willing to work and learn something!
He openly admits that most students don't do well in his class, and a good number don't pass. Only one or two students walk out with an A, and it has less to do with your effort and more to do with knowing the material before you even sign up. He always says he's willing to help, but what he says/the book says/the test says are all different things
This class was harder maybe because it was online and it's a lot of content. I was constantly worrying about my grade because the labs were difficult by myself. I'd say he's an easy grader as long as you follow directions. He assigns a lot of work so make sure you're ready for that. Pretty boring too.
I took this class online because I have a disability so I thought it would be better to take online. I wish I had taken it in school with another teacher. Zhai doesn't work with us, makes us grade our own work after turning it in, but doesn't give much room for error. I tried working with him, but it didn't change how things went.
Tried taking this class online and it was a huge mistake. If you're looking for a teacher that is willing to help and actually teach, look elsewhere. Expect to teach yourself and grade all of your own work. I have never took an online course where the teacher didn't do any teaching and just expected you to learn on your own.
There are a few positives to this professor and a few negatives. The positives: drops one lab test and one exam, self grade so you can get a higher score, and responds to emails quickly. The negatives: does not teach any of the content rather you must teach yourself, very time consuming class and I mean many hours, must take final in person.
In the beginning of class, this professor openly admits that he has students drop left and right. His class is super work loaded, and you have to be ready to teach yourself. He doesn't even grade your work, you must do his job and grade yourself. This class is going to be driven, taught, and graded all on your own with little to no help.
I would run far from this professor while you have a chance.
Horrible, horrible experience. The absolute worst teacher I've ever had. I was a student that was on his way back into class for the first time in a long time, school was scary. He not only went out of his way to make it miserable, he brags about being a bad teacher. Having that many withdrawals at a certain point is reflective of you, Xiaoming.
This teacher assigns a QUIZ every week that is 100 questions. He also assigns weekly lab reports that are several pages long. This is absolutely a self taught class. He is extremely condescending to students and says if you fail, it is because you clearly didn't try hard enough. If you have a chance to take this with a different teacher, DO IT.
He was one of the very few teachers who I did not like here. He was very rude when I went to meet with him during office hours and even yelled at me. His lectures and class in general was not organized at all. He wasnt helpful, the class was very stressful and he was rude to students who actually tried to learn.
This was the absolute worst class and teacher I have ever taken. This teachers response time over email is more than a day. His grading system is completely messed up. Each week he gives 100 question quizzes along with online discussion problems, lab, and every two weeks he adds in a lab test. He provides no lectures and no review guides.
Extremely hard. Every week you take a two-hour quiz with 100 questions. You get lab reports every week to. I found those to be very hard. He really does not provide much help and constantly emails us on how if we dont do well its all our fault & that we clearly didn't try hard enough or make enough time for his class.
This is one of the worst teachers I've had at clc! If you have the choice do not take! He is incredibly dry and boring with tons of homework and participation. This is the hardest class I have taken since high school and grading is swayed to how much he likes you in class. I would NOT recomend if you want a easy science class.
Dude is terrible at responding to emails and he is very rude and doesnt care bout his students
Terrible teacher. Doesnt help at all and doesnt care for students
This prof was horrible. He does not care about his students. If you require any accommodations he will not only refuse but he will give his input. He is harsh, disrespectful, and has extremely high expectations. Do NOT take science with him unless you are an AP student and enjoy being yelled at with extreme amounts of criticism and pressure.
RUN AWAY. He makes his classes difficult for no reason at all.I took one of his classes in person and one online, both were unbearable. He makes you grade your own labs, then grades them himself and gives you a different grade anyway. You can expect up to 2 labs, 2 tests and 1 lab test in a single week. He made me dislike the earth sciences.
Dr. Zhai is by far the worst prof at CLC! He makes you feel like it is your own fault if you don't understand the material. When you ask for help, he says you should just drop the class because you aren't spending enough time with the material. If you have to take this class, do yourself a favor, don't take Dr. Zhai.
Do not waste your time taking this class w/ this professor. Absolutely ridiculous. If students are struggling, it's their fault, they aren't motivated, not self-disciplined, they've lost confidence, do not have time to complete the assignments, etc. He has said these things himself. This a reflection of your teaching style & lack of understanding.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Just because a student is struggling to complete long labs, lap reports, several discussion posts, 100 question quizzes, etc. EVERY WEEK, does not automatically make them a bad student Prof. Zhai. The reason for the countless drops are solely because of you. Reflect on yourself rather than bashing & blaming your students.
Do not waste your money or time. Take a course with a better professor or even a condensed course with a better professor. It's not worth it to take a course with a professor who thinks his class is the most important. I am a driven student & have spent 12+ hrs a week working on this course. Not worth the stress & emotional drainage.
I read these reviews before taking the class & was confident I could get through it. It's week 4 & I am done. One course should not feel like a full time job. We have other classes that are important too--not just the study of rocks. Students deserve professors who understand they are in other classes & have other obligations. This class is a JOKE.
You will hate rocks after his class. Assumed everyone was taking just his class and devoting 40 hours a week to the study of rocks. Made you read 30-40 pages, and watch an hour long video multiple times on top of a one hour class. Worst class I have ever taken, and I wish I dropped it.
This course was absolutely awful. Professor Zhai says he is always willing to help and answer questions, but as soon as you reach out to him he makes you feel dumb and irrelevant. He is absolutely no help and expects too much of his students. I wish I had checked rate my professors before I took his class.
Worst class and worst professor I've had. Every week we'd have to do 1 quiz, 1 lab report, and 1 lab test along with reading chapters. This is an intense course with a Professor who doesn't help at all by supporting. Just like the other reviews, he makes you feel dumb for reaching out to him. I wish I had looked here before
Total overkill! Earth Science can be more interesting if Dr Zhai was better at engaging the class. His curriculum consists of reading the chapter, taking an 100 question quiz and 15 page pdf lab activity+report every week! Which you will also have to grade yourself, and if he doesnt agree with the score he would give you what he thinks u deserve
This course was very difficult but the teacher and tutor are open and willing to help with assignments. I started to understand more as I got help from the tutor weekly. There are 5 major tests (not including final exam) and if you fail them, you fail the class. The labs and quizzes barely put a dent in your grade when compared to the tests.
I'm not good at science and I thought this course would be easier for my non-lab credit. I was wrong. Dr. Zhai is very strict, but all he really did in class was talk about his trips to different national parks. The rest of the material came from 80+ slides online, an overpriced textbook, and outside videos. You have to grade your assignments too.
WOULDNT recommend. Didnt follow accommodations for students. Tough labs. Not good with computers, gives canvas quizzes where you have to type in answer word for word but he spells correct answer wrong so if you dont know how to spell it incorrectly you will fail. A real jerk. Requires you to grade your own labs. Requires camera on during final.
