not hard if you pay attention
Very kind with a good sense of humour. Good teacher.
Very hard to understand and uncaring individual.

After several classes, I still think that she is a good instrucor.
why does the history and sociology departments at Edinboro keep hiring people no one can understand? We aren't learning anything!
horribleeeee....that about sums it up! (Can't understand her either.)
Poor class room management. But otherwise very easy. What is up with the seating chart?
some students are simply nasty. this professor is good
not bad if you can understand what she is saying

an ok class
Easy 'A' class!
very boring and hard to understand. the class is a real pain to go to cause it is soo boring, but it is an easy class if you do the work, and chen does mean well.
Never ever ever will I take a class with her. I can't understand anything that she says. Not trying to be rude. Very easy A though, just cant understand her too clearly.
I have never laughed so much at a teacher. Her English is hilarious but she is really nice as a person unless you walk in late, therefore she gives you the most evil glare I have ever seen. Very funny though and easy class.
Her English is a little hard to understand but the class is easy as long as you do the work. She lets you know exactly what is expected from you. Get through the first quiz and you be fine; just don't walk in to class late.
The only difficult thing about this class is understanding her and going to class.
She is very cute and nice. It's not like you cannnot understand her, but she cannot understand you. Just realize that, and you can be better. She is hot!!
Dr Chen is so easy. Take her. EASY A
you cant understand a thing she says, and she def doesnt understand her students, but she is an easy "a" or "b" as long as you show up to class. you dont even need to study.
gahhh i hate this woman.
if you dont like understanding what a teacher is saying.. and like to fall asleep a lot. Take a class with Chen.
She was very fair and if you do your homework it will be an easy A.
...why...why dr.chen?
Very easy class even you don't understand what's she talking about, neither does she. I got an A for that class but for the whole semester sit there, I didn't learn anything.
She is extremly hard to understand. I try to listen but i just fall asleep. I have never studies and got a A. She is so easy.
Class is very easy, but it is extreamly boring. You can not understand her to well and she can definatly not understand you. I will never take a class with her again if i can help it.

do not come to class late or she will stare at you the whole walk to your seat then say.. im dr. chen, why were you late... other than that its an easy A
ONE THING TO SAY ABOUT HER, EASIEST TEACHER AT THE SCHOOL. EASY A. NO TESTS CMON HOW CAN YOU BASH HER
Simple teacher to take, but very hard to understand. She gives a good stare down when u r late, but I always gave her 1 back. oh, and when she is giving a lecture, she says "k" and "ok" every sentence...we counted 200 in 30 minutes of lecture, and laughed everytime, she didnt appreciate it, OH WELL
she's ok I like how she prepares for test
She is as crazy as Main Moon Lady.
This class is pure junk.
Come on, Dr. Chen is the easiest teacher in the school. So what if you cannot understand her, take your A and run. If you really want to learn, dont take her, but if your QPA needs a boots, Dr. Chen is your professor.
Dr. Chen is an awesome teacher. She is difficult to understand but you can tell she knows her stuff if you really listen.
I really think Dr. Chen came up with an AWESOME idea about her grading system. In this course you kinda make your own grade. Don't work get a F, do little work pass with D, do what's asked of you and get nothing less than a B. Sometimes hard to understand but sit in the front and you'll be fine.
Any 6th grade student could easily get an A in this class. Yeah, if you're late you'll get the stare-down. But you have to remember she was raised in a different culture, one where respect is key. Being late is taken by her as a show of disrespect. Anyhoo, I liked the class and Dr. Chen, and I liked watching those time-life videos every friday!
A little hard to understand but a good prof. Good grading scale. She brought in some cool Chinese movies for our night class and gave a bonus for attendence
hmmm.. Well he is a cute little guy and nice, and really loves american government, but he is boring, and hard to understand. His test are ridiculous and you'll only do good if you already know things about the government. But if you go everyday you get extra 10 points. And the presentation is cake.

she is smart, it just doesn't seem that way in class. BTW no matter what she says, macarthur did not decide to invade south vietnam.
It's not that she's a bad person, but her english could be improved. I can only understand what she means 25% of the time. But I laugh whenever she says "reading exercise".
She is nice, when I can understand her. And whoever wrote that about "reading exercise" I totaly agree!! I love it! She is super easy though. OH and "no final"
Her classes are ridiculous. She takes exact phrases from the book and puts them on her tests and your grade consists of 10 ten point quizzes. Is she joking?
i feel like iam ordering chinese food for 2 and a half hours but i got an A and iam not the brightest person
At least she quizzes on what she has told you, which is more than I can say for most profs at EU.
Cannot understand her AT ALL. but she is a very easy grader and I got a decent grade...

Don't take her class! She had in her syllabus that she gives credit for attendance and class participation and she doesn't. The reading assignments can't be read by anyone, & her test questions are horribly written. Only 1/10 of the class got above a D.
Terrible teacher, easy class. She speaks broken english, and treats you like your in third grade. She makes you do a group project very easy. Her quizzes are easy you can miss two without having it deducted from your grade. Says attendence matters and she'll deduct points from your grade, it doesn't. I missed like 10 classes got a B. EASY QUIZZES!
I dont know what any of these people are saying, EASIEST PROFESSOR IN THE HISTORY OF PROFESSORS! TAKE HER FOR EVEY CLASS YOU CAN!!!
This class is REALLY EASY if you can get past her accent. She's really hard to understand. The class consists of quizzes and open book test too. You have a group project and you have 5 hw assignments. People tend to get mislead by the point value of the assignments, but I wouldn't recommend not doing them because of that.
If you want to find out about how students feel about her, check the back row.
Had to decifer her tests, which doesn't help with grades.
Chen is kidna of hard to understand during her lectures. If you have a question she tries to the best of her ability to answer it. Her class was very easy along with her test and assignments. I would take this class if you are looking for an easy way out.
The class is really easy. All you do is read these chapters and give quizzes on them. Then you have one big group project and several reading assignments that you have to write on. The class is really simple but the hardest part is understanding her when she talks.
Dr. Chen is the most caring professor I know. She is passionate about Chinese culture, of course, which is great to me. She makes things very easy for us, and explains repeatedly what is expected of us in regards to assignments. Just understand that she comes from China, where respect is supremely important: pay attention and don't be late.
Easy A. Really hard to understand, though. I am taking her again because of how easy her classes are. Tests are all 10 question T/F, and there is a small project, but it's only worth 10 pts. Recommended if you don't plan on learning a whole lot.
If you can understand what she is saying you learn quite a bit about the culture of certian people, but not so much straight up history facts. Wierd information about what they use for toliet paper test are easy you can fail two of them I didn't even go to take the final got an A. If you can get over the accent + seating chart it's worth the easy A
First of all, this lady needs to learn how to speak english. She says "United Steaks" instead of "United States"...and personally, it bothers the crap outta me that she can't even say the name of the country that she lives in. Tests are kinda easy, seating chart is a pain, but overall, her accent is what makes it all unbearable.
She doesn't give easy A's.
She doesnt speak very well English at all so the class is really boring and after a while you want to poke your eyes out. Easy projects and easy group work. Tests are true false from the reading
Someone should give her a better translation guide for "american english."
Had her for two classes...pretty easy...tests 10 questions true/false...she's not as stupid as people tend to think she is...
She's not as dumb as people think she is. If you enjoy history, you'll enjoy her class. Tests are 10 questions true or false. Easy class
I try to give most professors the benefit of a doubt, but she be teaching a World Civilizations class. The only reason EUP has her teaching it, is because she specializes in Asia. Admittedly, she is very smart, but largely inaccessible until after class. Lectures are horrible since there is a language barrier: She has a heavy Chinese accent.
So easy. She is very hard to understand with her very strong accent. She obviously doesn't care to improve her English. She's lived in this country longer than most of her students. She is very ill-informed (said King Tut was found in a pyramid) and consistently user incorrect grammar on her *tests*. I'm sick of interpreting her broken English. Very nice lady though.
She is a smart lady. VERY STRONG ACCENT. Sometimes she wont understand what your asking her if you ask question in class.Final and midterm was 25 T/F questions with 2 essay questions which you have to answer both. She gives a study guide with 6 essay questions to study which she only chooses 2 of them. Class was a pain and the book didnt help much.
WARNING! This is NO LONGER an easy course! Midterm and final have been switched over to essay questions only, in which if you forget 1 piece of info out of the 20 that she wants, you get a heavy point deduction (half off in a lot of cases). And she keeps saying that you can discuss your tests w/her, but how can you when she can't understand English
Dr. Chen offers what should come as an easy A class. Hard to understand at times, but overall, is a very nice person and professor. Pretty easy as long as you go to class and pay attention. Midterm and Final only - gives you the questions before the tests. If you can't get an A or B in her class, then you don't belong in college.
Good professor, easy class. Hard to understand at times, but not that bad. Lots of points, so an A or B isn't hard to come by. She's easy to talk to if there is a problem too...I went to her about a grade I got on the midterm and she regraded my test and I got 17 points higher on it. I'm looking forward to taking her in the spring again for HIST102
This class, for me, was easy and interesting. You need to put an effort in, or you will realize you are not doing so well. Also kids find her accent "funny" or something childish and ignorant. If you can understand her, which you can, and ignore the kids who are rude, then you'll do fine if you if do all the work and come to class.
Not a good professor at all. Take Mughal if you need World Civ 1 or 2. Chen should not be allowed to teach.
This makes me so mad. Dr. Chen has a clear format for the class. You always come into class knowing exactly what you're doing that day. You know when tests and quizzes are. The quizzes are open book and there are a ton of them. How can it get any easier? She isn't the most engaging professor but at least she's competant, unlike some.
She says she has extra credit for attendance, and does not give it. The quizzes are open book, but not in the book...you can't understand a word she is saying. Not as easy, as some people say it is.
I absolutely love Dr. Chen! I have had her the past 2 semesters for 2 classes and I have learned so much. The classes have been extremely easy and I have not had to put much effort into the courses. However, the people that were in my class this semester needed to grow up and act a bit more mature. We are in college and need to act like it!
And, she NEVER says that you get extra credit for attendance - you pay to come to college, so why should a professor offer extra credit for attending there class? Also, ALL the answers for the open book tests are found in the book - but you actually have to do work in college and look for the answers. I got all A's on my open book tests.
This class is truly easy, but trying to understand her is a battle.I'm not trying to be mean but her English isn't really that good, but her test are straight from the book so its not challenging at all.
Trying to understand Dr. Chen is pretty much like trying to find a needle in a haystack. She is easy...perhaps too easy, but incomprehensible. If you want your education to advance dont take her. Better yet, if you want to understand something, dont take her.
easy a or b, but don't expect to learn a thing- and expect to put up with the most annoying students you will ever see in Edinboro. As said by a previous poster..
she cant speak english, she treats everyone like we are in 2nd grade with assigned seating for example. her test are relatively easy but you have to read beacuase you cant understand her lectures.
Japan, Past and Present. Class feels like a slide show of her summer vacation half the time, which at 7 at night is a pretty good bedtime story. Half the class is taught in extraordinarily boring group projects. One project was half about France and the class is on Japan, I don't actually think she read that book. Extremely anal on essay questions.
You can not understand her at all! And her powerpoints are just the titles---no info so you have to get all the info from her talking and you cant understand her. Tests are pretty hard, midterm REALLY hard...use caution with this class
Very tough grader. Tests are mostly short answer and T&F. You'll never know what she'll throw at you. She is also very hard to understand. I ended up with a 51%.
very hard to understand and a harsh grader. I missed two questions on a quiz which were worth 30 points each (mind you there were only 10 questions) so I got a 40%, and I'm usually a straight A student. Read the textbook and quiz questions CAREFULLY, because sometimes little things that seem like typos are actually tricks.
All quizes are open book and there are only two. You only take two exams which are entirely true and false and your final is one essay question which could be from any chapter. Easy A or C with min effort.
Awful teacher. If you want a GenEd class that you're really going to have to work to pass, and try desperately to understand the professor, I would definitely not take Chen. She gave me a D in her class, but I got an A in all 4 of my other classes. Word to the wise. Stay away.
She is generally a nice teacher but not a very good one. She does not speak good english, is hard to understand and doesn't make complete sentences. If you are not aready very familier with world civilizations, dont take her. She has change here quizes and test in the last year and made them a lot harder.
Her quizes are unreal. 2 open book and 2 close book quizes consisting of 8 true & false questions worth 40% and 2 short essay questions worth 30% each. She does drop 1 closed book quiz but dont be fooled her open book tests are not that easy. Midterm and final consists of 45 true or false questions worth 50% and 1 essay question worth 50%.
I pray every Edinboro student gets the privilege to listen to her talk about the octopus.
Worst prof. I have ever had..impossible to understand, never answers students questions and it seems like she has no idea what she's talking about. I think she makes most of up. Grades completely unfairly as well...
I think this professor needs to get some better english, and realize she is teaching a freshman level course not a senior level.
Horrible English. Can't understand much of what is said. The lectures are pointless and nothing was gained by attending class. Talks about irrelevant facts (ex: pepper, the north star, and the big dipper, compass and dying in the desert). Quizzes are ridiculous and impossible to study for. Not recommended professor.
Horriable teacher, you can't understand a thing she says. And i don't think she can understand you half the time either. Don't take her.
For whoever has this professor, may the good lord have mercy on your soul.
It is hard to understand her but if you do the readings and study you'll pass with flying colors. I enjoyed this class simply because I love history. Even if you hate it, if you study (which is expected in ALL college courses) you won't have any problems in this class.
Dr. Chen does have an accent, but you get used to it. Her tests are easy. Read the books!! That's it! She takes her test right out of them. She even pretty much gives you the final as a review! Her class is not hard. You have to not be a slacker and study!
Impossible to understand. She barely understands the English language so any question that you ask will not be answered. Extremely strict and can't be reasoned with. Avoid at all costs!
This class is tough, but worth it. Be prepared to read and ask questions. Dr. Chen is available for office hours, go see her-will benefit your grade. Tests are T/F - hate that, and she can be difficult to understand. For a 100 level class, this is rough. But if you like history and will commit to doing the reading, it is a good class.
Her class was impossible. The only reason I got a good grade was because I had the syllabus and taught myself the material.
Avoid at all cost! This is the worst professor I've ever taken, hands down. Tests were incomprehensible, and even when she admitted she screwed up she wouldn't change anything. Expects you to memorize parts of the book and plagiarize for tests (doesn't say which parts though)! I'm a 3.9 gpa student, and barely passed this because of her.
Avoid this professor at all cost!! She is so hard to understand. She only teaches about the Japans view side on the 20th century. I am lucky if I get a D in her class. One question in her exams are worth 30 points. No one has ever gotten an A on her text.
This professor has recieve a lot of bad rap about being tough, but she really wants her students to learn from their experiences in and outside of class. She has a very headstrong teaching ethic. She also fairly knowlegeable on the subjects she teaches. Despite her quirks, I wouldn't have it any other way. OSD students, be careful in her classes.
She was incredibly hard to understand and I would never wish this teacher upon anyone.
Academic probation because of this class might be something I am well on my way to. Usually a 3.0 student and this class alone will drop me bad. She is inconcsistent and very strict. The tests are very oddly graded, you can miss 2 questions and fail a test if you miss the essay questions at the end. Be very careful with this class.
She is very hard to understand, and doesn't seem to have any direction with her teaching. She doesn't stick to the syllabus, and goes off on tangents about other subjects almost every class. My 4.0 isn't going down because she can't teach. I dropped the class, and it's a good thing because half the class failed her midterm.
I don't like to speak poorly of professors, and I'm sure Dr. Chen is a nice person... but she is a horrible teacher. I took her class freshman year and I was terrified. Now, as a senior, I'm sure it would be equally as bad. Her class was impossible and I could barely understand anything she said. Avoid at all costs.
The only nice thing: Will make the time to meet with you and discuss problems you may be having. But her accent makes her difficult to understand. Most of the class is taken up by "group" presentations so she only lectures 1 out of the 2 classes she taught during the week. She spends a good deal of time pointing at maps, less on chapter content
I really enjoyed Chen's classes. She really knew the subject and she tried her best to help us understand what she was talking about. It is sometimes hard to understand what she is saying, but a lot of the information she talks about is on her Powerpoints (which she sends to you through email) and in the book. Tests and essays are really easy!
I really like her as an individual but she is hard to understand but she tries her best to teach her students. Her tests can be hard but if you do well on your presentation it will boost your grade.
Attendance is mandatory but the lectures are not informative. The book has all the test information.
She is a great professor who cares about her students. I've heard that she is a little hard to understand, but I had no trouble understanding her. In order to pass, just do the study guides she gives you and write down key points that you find.
I think I was the only person who got an A. If I hadn't already had a decent understanding of the subject, I don't think I would have done nearly as well. Aside from being difficult to understand, her lectures are bogged down by her persistently trying to engage students who just don't care, so we never finish the lecture. Memorize the text - srsly
I feel bad, as she is a really nice person. I know she means well. However, her lectures are uninformative yet attendance is mandatory. She won't let us use laptops, okay so I take out a notebook, then she says she'd prefer us to just listen to the lecture then go online and view the power-point if we want to take notes. I do not recommend her
Her accent is very difficult to understand. Her lectures are very long, loaded with info, and very confusing. The course only has 100pts in it so you have to pass every assignment. If you take the class i recommend printing out her powerpoint, its impossible to copy her notes.
Her heavy accent makes it hard to understand her. I've noticed that going to her class is a complete waste of time as everything is in the textbook, but attendance is mandatory. She takes weeks to grade each exam, doesn't let us see what we missed, and then when I go to her office she isn't even there.
Incredibly hard class history 104. You cannot understand him
For this class she will have you give answers that you can read directly off the powerpoint but she likes it in your own opinion. You have 2 exams that are 50% of your grade. I dropped her class after midterms. The test questions arent very clear compared to how clear reading off a powerpoint is. Take notes! If you dont do good your GPA will drop.
Very intelligent and knows her subject but she is very lecture heavy and hard to understand
Take this professor online if you can! The course goes through an online book and is much easier. Only major part of this course was doing an oral report to submit and a powerpoint on a chapter she assigns you. Lot of busy work, but Dr. Chen provides a weekly outline to follow. Stay on top of tasks and it should be an easy A
Alright
Heavy accent. Wants things worded HER WAY, spends WAY too much tome focusing on things that arent test material. Insulting to stindebts who are obviously giving the correct answer. Does not start lecture on time. Criteria is not clear at all. She cannot remember the chapters the weekly quizzes are on.
Very hard to understand what she wants even though online class. Does not explain anything and just gets frustrated and doesn't want to deal with e-mails from students. I had multiple problems with her. Don't do it to yourself.
Just don't! If you don't HAVE to take this class, then don't! Gives no direction or expectations. She just assumes that you should know what to do. Oral and written presentations were a nightmare, again, doesn't give proper explanation. Final was 40 questions worth 20 points on material from 10 chapters! No study guide. JUST DON'T!!!
Chen seems nice, but her sentence structure is horrible and I cant understand her 90% of the time. She expects you to read ahead and know the material. She takes role everyday and takes forever, as well as her lectures She doesnt allow laptops, so dont bring them. Her study guides are a list, it was hard for me to study. I barely passed her class
Just don't. If you don't have to, don't take her. She gives no clear instructions for her Powerpoint project, the tests are easy unless they are fill-ins, answers are open to interpretation, and her feedback (when she does get back to you) is not helpful. She is not good with technology and refers you to IT, even though it's on her end. Just don't
Do not sit in the back if you do not want to answer questions. She goes through the roster and randomly calls on people. She also is difficult to understand and a quiet speaker. She rarely understands you when you do answer a question and makes you sound like a complete idiot in front of the class.
I had absolutely no connection with them whatsoever except for the one time I had a question and I didn't even get a clear answer. I'm not the best at history but taking this online was a nightmare for me. If you can learn and remember things from just a textbook then you will do good in this class. I personally would not take it again.
She did not teach at all. Gave us crappy power point outlines that were of no help. The worst book I have ever had to read for a class. Very difficult to follow because the writer was all over the place with his timeline. Had a random presentation due at the end of semester that had nothing to do with the class and graded it extremely harsh
In lectures she asks students obvious questions. This constantly forced me to regurgitate the info so by the end I knew it way better than just listening to the lecture. syllabus is clear with no surprises in a semester. Reading quiz weekly. 2 exams. Her accent is a little hard to understand but she is awesome. Con: she doesn't challenge you much.
The weekly reading aren't that bad but the in class lectures are never on pace with the readings. You will always be a week or two behind in class. The lectures are painful to sit through because if you read the chapter it is all the same information. Just take a lot of good notes on the chapter and you should get a decent grade.
The worst professor I have ever had.
This class was very odd. The weekly quizzes are fairly easy, but the readings are extremely long and written poorly. The final project makes absolutely no sense. There are no directions at all and she grades it harshly. We received very little communication from her as well.
Gives very poor instructions. The final assignment made no sense. I feel like I learned nothing from this class.
