Difficult to understand
not a bad teacher, gives a good review for the final
Didn't understand a word he said all semester
No Comments
couldn't understand him once
Does not speak English. Gets mad if you ask for an explanation. Worthless Prof.

horrible and difficult, after mid term I had to drop out.
horrible, should be sent home.
just...awful is the only word to describe it. somehow i miraculously pulled off a C.
he is the worst teacher ever, can't understand him, tests are not on anything you cover in class, doesn't understand you, and explains what an equal sign is
i think he's a pretty good professor.. though unclear at times, his teaching style makes it easy to learn...
Very good attitude, always smiling, hard at explaining things in which the student understands... difficult to ask questions...
i used to love calculus... until i took that class. i can't wait for it to be over.

what on earth is this guy talking about. I think I am more dumber for taking his coarse
very hard to understand, too smart to teach the course
Awesome teacher!!! Always smiles and has a great attitude. If you appreciate his brilliance then you will love this class.
Your missing what life has to give if you dont meet this man... hahaha.. oh god... Got a B but i had to work for it.
He understands the material so well, he cannot explain it to those who don't.
Very hard. Thinks that people learned how to do derivatives in middle school, cuz apparently that's when he did. DO NOT TAKE HIM. Horrible teacher can't explain material
I had calc 1 in high school, and took it again in college with xinfu. I found him to be extremely educated in the material. I enjoyed his teaching.
Horrible teacher. Can't explain the materials.
can't speak english clearly, not helpful, doesn't teach, and thinks that calc one is supposed tobe taught at a grad student level. avoid at all costs
Goes too fast. Doesn't speak english. Just overall sucks.
DO NOT TAKE XINFU! He doesn't speak English! Otherwise, I think he would be a good teacher. I managed a C+ because of my past calculus knowledge, although his class was kinda weird....Anyway....take a different calc prof
RUN AWAY AS FAST AS U CAN!!!!
Calculus is hard enough as it is - Xinfu Chen was just not a good teacher, I believe he knows what hes talking about but just can't convey information
It would help if he could speak english...I stopped going to class out of frustration of not being able to understand what he was saying. Nothing helps unless you have a good TA
THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER! Xinfu Chen absolutely sucks! If you get him for calc, make sure you transfer to a different class! He can BARELY speak English, making it very hard for us to try to ask him questions. In order to pass the class, you need previous knowledge of calc.
Chen absolutely sucks! I had to withdraw from calc b/c I was unsure if I would even be able to pass. I also decided to change my major b/c of calc. He isn't clear on the material at all and he expects you to know a lot of calc and physics already. Just don't take him for calc and you'll be OK.
Chen was a terrible professor. I lived at the Math Assistance Center most of the semester because he did not explain anything in class. He had examples but they were for the easiest problems in the book- uneffective for tests or homework. He didn't at all when you asked questions. Run away!!!
Xinfu means well but clearly cannot teach effectively... hard to understand and can't answer questions. Take another professor if you can. The calc I lab is such a waste but that's not Xinfu's doing.
I learned more in 1 class with a substitue teacher than with an entire semester with him, not even lying. - I agree with the other comment... RUN AWAY!!!!
GET OUT if you can. If not, dont panic. Get his review sheets and get help from the TA's on those problems. They are similar to the ones on the test. If you plan to take calc 2 and/or havent had calc before, Id drop him and take someone else next semester because you probably wont learn anything in his calc 1. Check out Athanas.
difficult prof. bc you can't understand much of what he says. you can't understand him and he can't understand you. not a good mix. thank god for the tutoring program!!!
Sure the guy doesn't say the smartest things but thats what makes this class bearable. Do you really want someone that just drones on? You will end up going to class at the very least to hear what random thing he might yell out. He is very helpful, although at times he can overexplain a concept. All in all, he's my favorite professor to this day.
The math department eats chode at Pitt. Maple Lab is big waste of time. Had him twice and ended up dropping both times. My man should have an endorsment deal with Marlboro because he POUNDS the cigarettes like no other. Don't go in his office, there were at least 5-6 coffee cans full of butts and an empty pack for each butt! Why can't we smoke?
Random, sporatic, unclear, and he doesn't give substantial examples. "Why is this problem so hard? The book is crazy to ask such a problem." quotation from Professor Chen in reference to an example (which was also a homework problem) he was going to attempt but decided not to follow through with because it was "difficult". Don't take him.
he might be a good teacher in chinese but you cant understand a word that comes out of his mouth so get out of the class as soon as possible.
He is sometimes hard to understand. But he is hilarious! Take his class. I laughed out loud many times. He isn't a great teacher, but let's be honest; how many good math teachers are there? Especcially with calc, a good teacher is really non-existent. Take him, he's decent.

Hilarious, excited, lively. This guy is not boring, he will keep you entertained for the hour. Also a VERY smart guy. Don't expect a fluf class from this one. He has a thick accent, but you get over it pretty quickly.
RUN. His class is horrible and I had to learn through the book. Worst teacher I have ever had.
I don't understand why people give Xinfu low marks. I personally love him. He is always enthusiastic and stops class frequently to see if anyone has questions. I love his outfits. As we say, "fear the Fu" but in the best possible way. He is my favorite prof this semester.
if you can follow the examples he does in class, you'll do well on the tests. definitely go to the reviews, and the tests won't be bad at all. the homework and lab are a pain, but other than that he's entertaining in class and he really makes sure you learn the material to do well on the tests.
I must confess that I tried to add/drop this class before the semester started because of the reviews that I had read. Fortunately, this wasn't possible. He teaches well, he is more than understandable, and checks that everyone is with him CONSTANTLY. He makes calc fun (if that's possible) and explains "why" not just "how."-not typical for math
This man made my life a living hell last year! Avoid taking his class at all costs!! The only bright side is he says some hillarious things, only because he can't speak English.
He came almost an hour late for an extremely difficult two hour exam. He does not prepare you well enough for the department final (which is worth almost everything)! His regular exams are pretty easy, and his homework is worthless.
I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. He's not that hard to understand and if you can get past his accent, he's really a brilliant teacher. He presents the concepts in many different ways and if you go to class, the tests are a piece of cake...That being said, good luck if you have a question; chances are he'll misunderstand you.
Look people...Im the type of guy who never blames anyone else. If I don't get the results I want then I must not be working hard enough. But Xinfu is terrible at teaching. I couldn't understand a word he said. I don't think he understood what students asked. I'm positive he is a great mathematician. Not a good teacher! Assumes you know it already
Never take Calc 1 w/ Xinfu if you haven't had prior calc knowledge! He goes insanely fast and is awful at explaining things. He assigns 40+ problems a week. Even with help from my friends I had to withdraw b/c I thought I might fail.
I thought he was a great teacher. He made great use of examples, answered questions very precisely, and was pretty hilarious if I must say so myself. It was sorta difficult to understand him at first, but you eventually surpass the language issue as you become more and more comfortable with it. I'd recommend him to anyone.
He is a very smart mathmetician, but seems to struggle when it comes to actually teaching. He provides good examples to use on homework problems.
very hard to understand, both midterms very easy, DOES NOT prepare you for the final in any way. class is almost useless to attend.
xinfu is the best professor you could have for calc. he tells jokes and makes class fun. his english is hard to understand at first but after some time it's no problem. he never has a problem reexplaining something. his review sheets are exactly like his test and he doesnt give much homework.
chen is awesome. he's super helpful during office hours. he's funny and keeps the class kind of interesting. people just complain a lot. and if they say he's moving too fast, its NOT HIS FAULT. the department sets a specific schedule and they HAVE to follow it. and ofc its hard. its CALC. if its too hard, start with business calc. chens the man
Always late for class. Midterm practice sheets are both identical to the format and type of questions on the midterms. All the homework was graded for accuracy each week and ended up never being counted towards the final grade. Calc lab wasn't added into the final grade either. Neither were worth going to. He was 55 minutes late to the 2 hour final
Hes a funny character. The textbook is pretty difficult to understand, and Chen's lectures were only marginally more comprehensible. I think hes smart enough to know that the only way to really learn the material is to do problems. He gives good review sheets & gives very reasonable exams. I felt prepared for the departmental final. Rock on.
He really knows what he's doing, but has a hard time explaining it. I had to use the book frequently to understand concepts. Homework was assigned weekly but not overly time consuming. You'll need to study a lot to do well in his class.
Math king
Professor Chen is the man! Very very fair exam with very similar sample exam! Do everything on the review sheet, you get A in the real exam. Professor Chen is for students who take math seriously. He is the math genius. The best thing is that he is super helpful in the office hour!
hard test but fair..I screwed first one, but did well on final, which weights more. But Chen's style needs time to get used to.
Chen may seem nice and kind of funny during class, but if you go see him in his hours, the man is cold as stone and will just insult you for 30 minutes. He didn't give us any of the practice exams for the final that the other classes got. I have never disliked a professor so much, at least Wheeler was clear! The standard deviation on exam was <25
Like very much. Deep math knowledge appreciated. Would like to take again in future. Thanks for wonderful classes.
You must be patient with Chen and prepared to answer his questions. Go to his office hours for help but be prepared for his harsh comments. He can be funny once you get past it. He will pass ALL his students.
Chen is really something. Don't sit too close (wore the same ratty shirt sneakers and corduroys for the first 5 classes) EASY tests. Pretty funny to listen to (integral = "indigo"). That being said most learning is due to clear handwriting and textbook problems (find the solutions PDF online somewhere). Take him for laughs and easy tests
Xinfu is one of the most top mathematician. His lecture is the best class I have ever took.
Professor Chen is a good calculus teacher who is from China but his accent takes all of five minutes to get use to. Like any calc class much of the work and learning must be done on your own though practice and not through lecture. He does not require any homework or give any quizzes which is unlike any other calc professor at the university.
he is funny guy, but he is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. He does not prepare you for the final and his class is boring and it not even worth it to attend.
Okay so basically, most people in Chen's class didn't realize how easy he was compared to other professors. 2 exams, exactly like the review sheets, sometimes even the same problems. no quizzes and homework barely counts. yeah, the final was difficult but he curves a lot. he's also super funny and very smart. i would recommend him.
I was amused in class, but not when it came time for the test. Xinfu is clearly smart but also clearly doesn't care about his students. He makes a lot of errors during class and has to go back and fix them, and while it's funny to watch, I didn't feel like I learned anything or was prepared for the test.
Professor Chen is a very nice and funny guy. He's obviously extremely smart but is an awful teacher. If you have never had prior experience to calc don't take him. Goes very fast and expects you to know a lot. Only two tests and they are pretty hard. He curves a lot. The final is extremely difficult.
If you expect an organized professor who states what section of the book you're working on, Chen is not for you. He constantly makes mistakes during lecture and does not teach to the prerequisites for the class. He talks about analysis when the only requirement is the engineering linear algebra. I would never recommend him.
Worst Teacher I Have ever had at pitt. Screamed at us for an entire class. No organization, makes tons of mistakes, and if you ask a question be prepared to be told "how can you not understand this". Not recommended at all
Homework assignments are from the book but if you use the book's technique will not get a good grade on the homework which are 8-9 pages long. 2 midterms that are take home are very difficult. thought he was teaching a graduate level class. don't bother asking for help. you will get "why do you not understand?"
Chen is the worst Math teacher at Pitt. He makes mistakes way to often when problems are already in final stages of solving. No answer keys for review exams. The class is fairly easy but his bad teaching makes it harder.
Lectures are boring and hard to follow. He's a funny and nice guy but I barely learned anything in lecture and had to teach myself most of the material in the textbook. However if you do the homework and follow along in the textbook you should be fine.
Chen is one of the worst professors I have taken at Pitt. He is completely unaccessible and unorganized, do not bother emailing him with any questions. Your grade is based solely on exams so come prepared. I do not recommend.
Class is a borderline joke. Do the homework and go to class and you'll be fine. Just watch because he isn't the best at preparation for the final but his tests are easy
Xinfu never seemed like he had any idea what he was doing. Instead of explaining the concepts, he would just yell at you. He also assumed we knew a lot more math than we did and stuff he said just went over our heads. He also assigned massive amounts of homework. Fortunately, his exams were easy, so if you are able to teach yourself you'll do okay.
Xinfu was interesting, to say the least. My man showed up to class every day looking fresh, but his teaching left a lot to be desired. He shouts half of the lecture and whispers the other half, assigns an excessive amount of homework for the material, and generally doesn't prepare his students. I want to like him but he just makes it so hard.
Worst professor I've ever had at Pitt. Very tough grader. I've had grad students say I should have gotten more credit on problems he graded. He yelled at one girl in class because she got the right answer, but he marked the whole problem wrong for not labeling it correctly. 30-50 written problms/week. Grades policy makes no sense. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
I don't recommend him over other teachers such as Inna Sysoeva, although he still is able to be understood enough to make his lectures fairly productive. His teaching style is also very consistent. I did not like the way he yelled out what he was saying most of the time. It is hard at times to not notice how irritating his yelling is.
Save yourself the trouble, don't take this guy.
Chen is a good teacher. Although he assigns much more homework than other teachers, the homework is really helpful. He covered everything clearly in his class. As long as you do the practice before the test, you can get an A. Even if you got D in your midterm, you still have chance to get an A as long as you do well in the final.
Listen, just do the homework and show up to class and you'll get an B at least. I averaged a C on every test we took, but handed in all of the homework, and ended with an A-. He does assign a lot of homework, and he yells for the whole class which is unfortunate, but you learn to deal with it. Oh, and all of the answers for the homework are online.
I think Xinfu was one of the best math professors I had at Pitt. His screaming does get annoying, but it definitely makes it harder to drift off during lecture. Hes also very thorough when explaining the problems. As long as you do the homework and the study guides he gives you, youll get an A on the midterms. I would take him again if I could.
He is an extremley smart man, but not a good teacher. I never know what is going on and I go to every single class. He is not very good at explaining and he skips a lot of steps in his examples or gets to the end and gives up. He is very nice and tries to be helpful, but I would not advise taking his class if math is tough for you.
He is very hard to understand when lecturing, and he is not a fair grader. He does not like to be wrong. He is also not very accessible out of class, as he told us directly he never checks his email. Unless you are an absolute calculus genius, I would not recommend taking him for Calc 1.
Awful. Does not answer any emails and rarely attends his own office hours. Does not like to be wrong and grades very harshly. Lectures are boring and have nothing to do with the material tested. Was not prepared AT ALL for department final. Had a B until the final. I ended up having to retake the class.
He's a nice man but I swear you will not understand a single lecture. Every problem, every example is ten times more complicated then it needs to be. The only reason I am semi passing is because I wrote my own notes from (the equally bad textbook) and the TA hard carrying everyone.
If it's your first time taking calculus 1 DO NOT take this class. After maybe 2 lectures I realized that it would be more effective to teach myself. I had taken calc in highschool so I managed with youtube refreshers. If you want to teach yourself, go for it; he doesn't require attendance. If you need guidance/haven't taken b/4, don't take Xinfu.
Avoid him if you cannot teach yourself from the book or through online sources. With online class, I was more inclined to surf the internet than be attentive in class as Xinfu did not create an environment that made me want to participate. I don't recollect what I have learned in this class, and when asked what this class is about, I say "Math."
His lectures were disorganized and made no sense partly because he was YELLING almost the whole time. His homeworks were unnecessarily long and I don't think he even looked at what the problems were before assigning them because many weeks we'd have the same homework numbers but in a different section. I just skipped lectures and read textbook
Chen seems like a nice guy but DONT take his class. he doesnt check his emails at all and the lectures barely help with understanding. I only went 50% of the time. the textbook is better than lecture but it sucks too, so good luck reading that. lots of homework as well, graders are slow and inaccurate. take someone else for diff eqs.
I somehow got a good grade in this class. I taught myself everything I knew from the book. Never take Xinfu, there is no chance you will understand because his lectures are all over the place and impossible to follow. The only way you'll learn is if you do practice problems and teach yourself.
He does not talk, he only yells, he has a bit of a language barrier that sometimes impedes his speaking or spelling. It's hilarious. He is smart, but it's sometimes hard to understand where numbers came from. The homework often did not match what the lectures were about, though google was to the rescue to help teach. He will not check his email.
Xinfu Chen is essentially a homeless man that Pitt hired off the street.
Although I do echo most of the grievances that my peers have, he is hilarious. His unconventional teaching style paired with his goofy mannerisms is very entertaining. Moreover, his exams were very fair. Often, he would highlight certain concepts during the review, and they would show up on the exam.
Awful lecturer, always late to office hours. Language barrier, impossible to reach outside of class (does not answer emails, work phone or canvas messages). Be prepared to completely self teach yourself the course using the textbook and its solutions. While midterms are easy, he does not prepare you for the final at all.
神人教授邮件不回canvas啥也没有布置作业也不讲逆天指数突破人类极限
Avoid avoid avoid. Chen does not respond to emails, provide a syllabus, or even update anything on Canvas at all. His lectures are okay if you don't mind some yelling and smell of tobacco, but you would be better off just reading the textbook. The class is easy since his midterms are almost identical to the practice problems he worked through.
Never take this if you want to learn the content. He has taken three full months to grade both our midterms. Doesnt check his emails anymore. Significant language barrier which causes misinterpretation from his side. Very disorganized. Exams are almost identical to problems he reviews near every midterm. Please look for someone else to teach you.
Dr. Chen taught me that there really is more to life than just grades. I learned to value my intelligence as a person over being an academic weapon any day of the week. His class taught me resilience and the power of believing in myself. Can't wait to retake this in the summer!!
CURSE OF RA 𓀀 𓀁 𓀂 𓀃 𓀄 𓀅 𓀆 𓀇 𓀈 𓀉 𓀊 𓀋 𓀌 𓀍 𓀎 𓀏 𓀐 𓀑 𓀒 𓀓 𓀔 𓀕 𓀖 𓀗 𓀘 𓀙 𓀚 𓀛 𓀜 𓀝 𓀞 𓀟 𓀠 𓀡 𓀢 𓀣 𓀤 𓀥 𓀦 𓀧 𓀨 𓀩 𓀪 𓀫 𓀬 𓀭 𓀮 𓀯 𓀰 𓀱 𓀲 𓀳 𓀴 𓀵 𓀶 𓀷 𓀸 𓀹 𓀺 𓀻 𓀼 𓀽 𓀾 𓀿 𓁀 𓁁 𓁂 𓁃 𓁄 𓁅 𓁆 𓁇 𓁈 𓁉 𓁊 𓁋 𓁌 𓁍 𓁎 𓁏 𓁐 𓁑 𓀄 𓀅 𓀆 𓀇 𓀈 𓀉 𓀊
Idk wtf this class was. Don't take if you want to learn from the prof and not by reading the textbook. Reading the book is the only reason I was fine. Man took months to grade our midterms (totaling 40% of our grade) and the final is still not graded (40% of our grade) let alone our final grades put in PeopleSoft despite them being due two days ago
good: lectures were honestly fine, I did learn linear algebra. bad: everything else was a disaster. took until thanksgiving break to grade the first exam, and it's now days past the due date for final grades and we have NOTHING in peoplesoft. no syllabus provided and on the first day he told us not to email him because he doesn't even check it...
Dr. Chen is the most disorganized and unprofessional professor I have ever had in college. He does not have a syllabus or check his emails, did not grade our first two midterms until the end of the semester, and us that over 200 "XtraProblems" were mandatory the whole time on the second to last class. Still no grade posted. Worst professor at Pitt.
As of December 26th, no final grades are posted on PeopleSoft or Canvas. He took multiple months to grade both midterms (we also received Midterm 2 before we ever got Midterm 1 back). The lectures were quite challenging due to a language barrier and consistent mistakes. Just take linear algebra with a different professor.
By far the worst professor I've ever had. He hardly speaks English and isn't able to understand basic questions. He doesn't answer emails and told us at the beginning of the semester to not even try to contact him. He added about 100 problems of homework in the last week. He also submitted our final grades two weeks after the deadline. Just awful.
Hilarious because he has no idea what he's doing. Doesn't speak English. Nobody learned anything. Got our midterms back right before finals. Second to last class assigned 200 mandatory problems. Final grades submitted a week late. Everyone completely failed the final. Can't tell you anything I learned from the class. Class was a total fever dream
Dr. Chen is the worst professor I had while at Pitt. He was impossible to reach outside of class. His lectures were all over the place, and he posted absolutely nothing to Canvas. Midterms were easy, as they were very similar to his review problems, but everyone failed the departmental final exam. Please take literally anyone else.
Xinfu Chen has an unconventional yet entertaining teaching style. Although he tends to yell, his exams are fair and highlight key concepts covered in class. unstuck study was a great study tool alongside the textbook.
Dr. Chen is a funny and iconic man, but his lectures aren't amazing. He isn't bad, but he can be confusing. Beyond that, I wasn't confident that I'd be prepared for the exam, since it is departmental, and he was slow to get exam grades back. That being said, he's pretty lax about the homework, and not a harsh grader himself.
Chen is the worst professor I will ever take. Wore the same clothes to every lecture, cannot speak english well, and only screams. Have questions after class? Ur cooked. If you manage to catch him outside of class, don't expect it again. Never in office hours, told us he wouldn't respond to email, and gave us his personal number. Hilarious tho
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! By far the worst professor I've had at Pitt. Didn't receive a single grade until near the end of the semester. Class doesn't prepare you for the final whatsoever. Midterms weren't too hard but expect to learn everything through the textbook. Lectures were a joke. Wore the same pair of pants all semester, yells during lectures.
He could be 17 or 70, SCREAMS all class, spent the first class scribbling and drawing the alphabet in a fancy font... Doesn't have a syllabus and good luck reaching him youd be better off sending a message via carrier pidgeon cuz he has "15K UNREAD EMAIL." The only person more confused than me was the xinfu.. Hilarious and does crazy research tho
DOES NOT USE ONLINE RESOURCES. Didn't grade anything until last two weeks, including exams. Took second exam day we got back from Thanksgiving break, then told everyone that some had been using the wrong textbook. Refuses to review Lin Alg since it's a pre-req (nope). Gives homework based on textbook, not class. FELL ASLEEP HALF HOUR INTO FINAL.
DO NOT TAKE DO NOT TAKE DO NOT TAKE DO NOT TAKE I DON'T CARE IF HE IS YOUR ONLY OPTION DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF. he's the worst prof I'll ever have by such a wide margain. He assigned a midterm the DAY AFTER thanksgiving break, and two LARGE problem sets TWO DAYS LATER you will learn nothing in class, and he provides nothing. DO NOT TAKE. DO NOT TAKE
