He is a very good professor, and he is very helpful when you need it.
Must study to pass, if one does not study one will get a D at best. Trust me I know. But overall the class is not hard
People if you want to take him i would say run like hell.. this guy is not helful and if you go to his office hours he will say " i am buzy what do you want?" just lik that... He make you feel like stupied if you aks Q.S. you have to write
He seems very well versed and very impartial politically......good traits for a professor to have
Easiest class ive ever taken, and i'm not joking at all.
Class is hard, i tried my best but teacher was not suppotiver. No tutors even help for his class. Its his way or no way
mucho bueno
he is nice but im not sure about his class yet. i just took my first test and it was some what confusing
Very good, understands what he is teaching and is impartial to your opinions, he will not judge your thoughts and his tests are easy if you study
He has this super high super ego and thinks that we the students are not as smart. He squirms and that's a demeaning way of showing his disapproval.
He;s always late to class and gets mad at the students who are late. He doesn't care about the students and he is very hard.
Some say instructors who teach at AVC can't get a job down below or anywhere else. He validates that saying. First, he's very rude. Secondly, he's just basically a terrible instructor. Doesn't make himself clear at all and actually muddies up the readings. He doesn't grade fairly either. I think he got hired for reasons other than having a degree.
Very difficult course made as "easy" as it could possibly be by a great teaching style.
Yo this Lao Shi is one of the best instructors on campus and I give him madd props, yo stay up Dr. Zhu, aight lates Zai Jian I'm out ONE.

He is a good teacher, but you can not drift off during class or you will get lost. He uses good analogies and explanations. He is very punctual. He accepts all questions and answers them. He is patient. He does not contradict the textbook. It is a good class.
She is pretty good, but her english is sometimes hard to understand. She speaks so slow it is easy to comprehend and you dont fall behind in the class. You could diffinently pass the class.
Hard class and the professor has a sarcastic attitude if you don't understand. He makes you feel retarded. Take someone else.
he's hard t understand sometimes. and he does pick on some students in the class and make them feel retarded. but he explains things very well
eh it was ok...really boring...
an university instructor and perfect for philosophy. Go grass hopper!!!
He's ok when he doesn't get into that sarcastic mode.
He passed me. I give him mad props. No, seriously, he's cool; just remember to do your homework. He's hard to understand sometimes, but it's not bad at all. It is not an easy subject so study and TAKE NOTES in the class.
He thinks that most of us are stupid students and doesn't try to help us understand.
He doesn't care about the students. When you ask a question he doesn't understand what you asked him and he says irrelevant things. He acts as if he is mentally somewhere else. I don't know what's bothering him, but he is moody and abrupt and not helpful to the students. And very rude.
I remember this class fondly. I thought Dr. Zhu clearly communicated philosophy in an engaging way. Having said that, the class is not easy; reading a philosophical text is akin to reading a math textbook due to its detailed and technical nature. In sum, Dr. Zhu is fair, rigorous, and fun. Go grasshoppa'!
Grasping the language of philosophy is a slippery slope, BUT Dr. Zhu makes it easy to understand the concepts. If you are lazy and want an easy class don't take this class because It will force you to THINK...I know this is difficult for many people. Dr. Zhu is a fine teacher.
his apparent sarcastic and demeaning attitude in his philosophy classes did not carry over to his chinese class. he was helpful and taught us some interesting things about the culture and the language. the class, however, was mediocre and repetitive. be prepared to ace every test and complete ALL homework in order to get an A. he's a hard grader.
This class is not for anyone. Only if you are serious about the class and not a procastinator.
The worst teacher & class that i've had in my entire college life! I can usually deal with a class and teacher even if i'm not into the subject, & i started interested but soon found that he is terrible at teaching, he gives very little hw so it made it almost imposible to improve my grade. His lectures are very confusing & really boring. He makes
Xinmin was definitely the best teacher I have ever had. Most feel he is too sarcastic, and maybe even rude... but I really thought his sense of humor was great and his style of teaching was fun.Learning Chinese with him was simple if you did the homework, and payed attention to his lectures. He's a smart guy~ :)
do not take this proffessor!! he is not helpful at all and makes philosophy very hard to understand. this was by far the worst proffessor and class i have ever taken!!!
I really enjoyed this class! It was challenging and informative, and although I did find him a little hard to understand sometimes I would highly recommend him. I would advise you to ask your questions during class though because he is a little unapproachable before and after.
I had to drop this class because i was hospitalized' I look forward to retaking his class in the fall od 09. he has a great sense of humor and i actually remembered what he taught, even with short term memory problems. he's great, does'nt just use the students as a means. if you understand anything about this class you know what i mean :) laura
I did not enjoy this subject at all, it was boring and pretty much a waste of time. Zhu was sometimes hard to understand but not too bad. He likes the subject and enjoys teaching it, he even cracks a few jokes. If you pay attention in class and study for the tests you will be fine, overall it is pretty easy as long as you stay attentive.
zhu has not got any better. he is very hard to understand and does not care about his students. his study guides are vague and generally only cover about half of the test information. all in all dont take him unless you want a long lasting headache..
Pretty easy, straightforward class. Take notes, study notes, take test, etc. Just show up, do whatever homework he may or may not assign, and study the lectures and it's an easy A. First two study guides don't really matter (STUDY YOUR NOTES. THAT'S ALL). The last is crucial. Essay final, and he uses 2 questions out of the 5 on the guide.
A good class and a really good teacher. He's pretty easy going and understanding. The class itself is very interesting.
Great teacher who really knows ethics. Really great sense of humor! His accent is not bad and only adds to his personality. Not a super easy class, but if you take notes and study them for your tests, you'll do fine.
He was so hard to understand, and you take a lot of notes!!! which you have to study off of in order to do the study guides. 2 tests, one final, a short paper, and videos, make sure you pay attention to the videos since they relate to the final. Good luck. Idk how i pulled off a C.
This seems to be a class where you either get it or you don't. There were many students struggling, but I really don't understand why. I recommend him simply because he tries to make it as easy as possible. Just go to lecture so you can get homework credit and practice the homework problems to study for the tests.
Could only understand every other sentence, more than half the class dropped his course. It was not cool at all. This class looks like math more than anything. LAME!!!!!!!!!!!....!!!!
Last 2 weeks of school now. He's a smart guy, he's good at being unbiased so that you can argue the concept back and forth. He hates getting shown that he's wrong. He actually had an out burst where he threw my backpack into the air which was very unprofessional. It's an easy class so I would recommend it, but be careful, discussion is unwelcome.
I am an A student and I'm on the Dean's list but this class I struggled to get a B in! He tell you to pick an philosopher that none are wrong, but then you get your grade back and he tells you that if you didn't choose a certain one you got docked. He doesn't answer questions AT ALL. He can't speak/ understand English. I don't recommend him!
He is a very smart guy. He knows the subject very well & explains everything so clear. All the tests and assignments are pretty easy but final exam is no joke. Just review the notes before you take the tests and you will be find :)
He's a good teacher in general. Very helpful and made sure everyone understands the lecture.
stay Away!!!! very hard class. did all the test d passed with a solid c on all of them and did 8 of 9 homeworks and he gave me D!!! grades very harshly!!! dont take this class unless ur willing to put lots and lots o work into it. fun class but hard.
He's fun, and loves it when the students participate! Good teacher and uses fun stories to illustrate his lectures!
Thoroughly enjoyed his class. Although his accent took some time to warm up to, he is very knowledgeable in philosophy and uses wonderful examples for the material. Philosophy is hard, but Zhu makes it understandable. Don't take if you don't plan on attending class, because his tests are based off most of his lectures. I learned a lot!
He is easy. all you have to do is write all the notes he has on the board. he makes up stories which makes the material easy to remember. i studied the night before all exams including the final and got a's. just go to class and it will be easy.
Besides the fact he has a really thick accent, He is awesome! You have to pay attention in class and be there in order to receive extra credit. Definantly NOT hard. Just a reminder this is college so be prepared to do some things on your own, everything isnt a walk in the park. I plan on taking him for transfer philosphy classes.
Honestly he's not that bad. You just have to pay attention and you'll be fine. The only thing I felt was a little obnoxious was that if u chewed gum in class he'd make u get up and spit it out in the middle of his lecture.
Definitely need to pay attention in this class. Thought provoking - class goes by much faster when you participate in the discussion - it's required! Topics: Death Penalty/Abortion, etc. It's easy if you take the time to think about and thoroughly explain the issues discussed on tests and quizzes. Not much homework. Lots of writing on tests/quizzes.
AVOID HIM!!!!
AVOID HIM!!! HES A BAD TEACHER!
He is very nice and humorous, and his lectures were clear and interesting (to me). Some students seemed to have a hard time in class, though I breezed through it. His class involves a lot of analyzing and critical thinking, but overall a very enjoyable class.
His class was super easy. He is really anal about time because he starts class as soon as it supposed to start. If your 5 mins late and miss the roll sheet to sign in consider yourself absent. I enjoyed his class though.
Dr. Zhu has a heavy accent that requires you to seriously pay attention to understand, but as long as you do pay attention, take notes, study, and participate a bit, you will do well. I got an A and I worked really hard for it!
Professor Zhu was funny and did a good job of teaching the material. I suggest sitting close, because he has a thick accent that makes some things hard to understand. He loves when students ask questions or answer his. He does not show any bias in his teachings. I appreciated his class even though I have NO interest in philosophy!
Seriously worst teacher I have ever taken, sitting through his class was torture every week. He expects you to have good writing skills and grades hard on essay questions. Has a very thick accent and is very monotone, couldn't pick a better person to make me lose interest in the subject. I am a straight A student and struggled.
Professor Zhu is one of the worst I've taken at AVC. Couldnt understand anything he was saying, AVOID him!
I just don't get all the negative comments. This class is so easy, simply go and listen. His lecture is so obvious you almost don't need to read. And seriously, the once/wk readings are like 2 pgs. Homework is rarely more than a few sentences. The class is as fun as you make it. The accent? Hello, you want to be a nurse, get used to foreign accent!
I loved this class!! He is super easy if you go to class on time everyday. If you rated him bad it's probably because you put no effort. His homework assignments are easy and tests are common sense and are right out of the study guide he gives you. Totally recommend this class.
My goodness. This professor has to be one of the worst professors I have ever taken in AVC. Whenever I have a question, I am ridiculed in front of the whole class. It seems as if the professor has some sort of grudge against me for no reason whatsoever. I highly recommend not taking this professor. My experience in this class was horrid.
He is very hard to understand. If you plan on showing up as much as a few minutes late don't take this class. Don't ever answer with your own opinion because it is wrong. He has a specific answer he is looking for. Don't even bother asking him questions because if they are not what he is talking about then he doesn't know. Forget asking questions during class he will just tell you to come to his office hours.
Good class. He encourages class discussion & notices who participates. Not much homework. He does reading comprehension/critical thinking exercises. Explains concepts well. TAKE GOOD NOTES. Tests can be detailed & final was easy. He has an accent but I understood him fine. He is helpful if you show effort & initiative. Grades fairly.
Good class. He explains concepts well; encourages class discussion & notices who participates. Not much homework but he does reading comprehension/critical thinking exercises. TAKE GOOD NOTES. Tests aren't too hard & final is easy. Grades fairly. He has an accent but is understandable anyway.
Prof. Z, is a great teacher. His accent is thick, and he seems harsh. Just do the homework, don't fall asleep, study and be respectful and you will succeed. He gives you funny stories/examples to relate to concepts being taught and literally gives you the answers to EVERYTHING.I studied for tests 20 minutes before class and received an A.
WHAT A BRAIN...HE IS EXTREMELY KNOWLEDGEABLE AND TRULY A GREAT PROFESSOR. HE DOES HAVE A HEAVY ACCENT BUT I SAT IN FRONT OF HIM TO BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND HIM MORE CLEARLY. I LOVE THAT HE GIVES YOU MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO GAIN POINTS VIA HIS "CREDIT CARD SYSTEM". HIS GRADING SCALE IS FAIR AND BASED ON THE HIGHEST GRADE IN THE CLASS AS THE BASELINE.
Best Professor of Philosophy. His lectures make the topics easy to understand, and his stories give good clarity to the subject
3 tests that are split in half, so it's more like 6 small ones. All open book. Hw assignments, usually quick and easy. Checks them the following class meeting. He teaches the subject very well. However the material is just something you either get or don't. I wouldn't suggest skipping class, especially in the last half of the semester. Use the book
Professor Zhu can be funny. He likes to make up stories for the lessons which can be helpful. He has a thick accent but it was easy to get used to. If you have any questions about grades, even after class he will often interrupt you and tell you to come to office hours. He also seems condescending when you try to dispute grades or ask for clarity.
I really enjoyed Prof. Zhu. His lectures are long but he always has a funny story that he applies to the lecture for better understanding of the material. He makes a lot of references to the textbook but you can probably get by without it. The only homework he assigns is a question at the end of each class
I learned more on my own than lecture but passed his class it was not easy.
Finally a philosophy class where I learned something. All you need to do is show up and take notes. Easy grade and you will actually understand philosophy.
Professor Zhu was a brilliant instructor. Engages the classroom, funny, and perhaps my favorite part about him was the way he explained concepts, ideas, and principles. If at first some ideas seemed difficult to grasp his explanation(s) would make them easy to understand. By far my best professor at AVC.
I took Zhu Fall 2015 semester. His lectures are long and boring. He tries to make lectures interactive by telling stories to help you understand the material better. The class is pretty easy, 1 term paper, 2 tests, and a final, Which are all very easy. Easy class, just drags on. It's not a terrible class, but it's not very good either. Your call.
Under rated professor I took the class just to transfer and by the end of it ended up learning stuff that still stuck with me a year later. He puts in a lot of stories and may come off mean but he's really not he just doesn't let students walk over him. The accent is only hard at first by the end you won't even notice it.
Professor Zhu is awesome. So far I have taken two classes from him. He makes philosophy really interesting by incorporating funny stories with the topic. To some people he comes off as mean. If you act like an idiot, be prepared to be treated like one. All of his tests are based off his lectures so make sure to take good notes!
his accent is very heavy which makes it difficult to understand but besides that he was a good professor, tried to make lectures interesting and tests were easy and straight forward. Only needed to write one paper and hardly any homework. All you need to know is on his lecture slides.
Best philosophy professor ever!!!!! Finally someone who knows how to teach philosophy.
This professor is very knowledgeable in philosophy and can sometimes be funny. However, he is hard to understand and I did not retain much from taking this class. Would not take again.
Hard to understand.
First professor I've actually disliked. He has a heavy accent and even got mad at me for getting confused once, he literally said: "That's a stupid question!" Intro to Logic is hard, but it's even harder when you can feel your teacher's negative vibes. He always seems to be angry and ready to explode. He gives off a condescending vibe.
