This is the hardest professor in my entire life as an Africa-america studies major and world government minor. Beware. Beware. Beware. And if you do not, at least please do beware.
Boring. She's a very smart lady, but my God the lectures are excruciating. I hardly ever went to class because of it.
Prof. Qin is a solid professor and has very interesting and productive lectures and is good at answering questions. The iClicker questions are very helpful, although there should be more of the for practice. Also, there are not enough question on the e-exams. They are difficult and getting just a few wrong does hurt your grade.
She's new to UMass and a really good teacher who cares about her students. She takes our input seriously and wants to see you succeed. That being said, class is challenging and definitely not an easy A.
Her lectures are incredibly boring. I went for the first month and failed the first test. The rest of the semester I didn't attend class and instead of zoning in lecture, I studied the book and did much better on tests. That being said, lots of the info in the tests is only from lecture, not the book, and she doesn't put full powerpoints on moodle.
She's new to UMass, but she's not a terrible professor. Her lectures are dull but she knows the material well. SIs really help. OWLs are shorter than chem111. She gives extra credit on exams, including the final. Unfortunately, labs trade OWLs for lab reports. Clicker questions every lecture.
Sharon is a great teacher. People often blame her for the difficulty in the content, but this is out of her control. Obviously, Chem 112 is very different from Chem 111. You must UNDERSTAND the concepts rather than just memorize. If you want to do well in this class, go to SI sessions and PRACTICE! She gives extra credit in exams and the final
Sharon is a great professor! She really cares about her students' success and even though the course is hard she gives extra credit and other opportunities to boost your grade. Overall, a great choice.
Honestly she is not that bad. People make her out to be worse than she is. She gives loads of extra credit and is specific on her grading criteria. She is way better than Mentzen!
Sharon is a pretty good professor. She wants a lot of people to do well and she cares about the class. She gives tons of extra credit. She drops i clickers and homework. If you do all of the homework and she drops some homework then that is more extra credit!!!
Overall, she cares a lot about her students and gives extra credit, but not a very large amount compared to other Chem 112 professors. Her lectures are quite dry, and she uses iClicker occasionally. Do OWLs and clickers because she drops a lot which can boost your grade. Focus on every test as well because they're worth 60% of your total grade.
Sharon has no tolerance for side conversations, even if they are chemistry related. If she hears someone speak she will stare at that person until they notice, then ask "do you have a question?" and then talks for 5 minutes about how rude we are. Lots of clicker questions.
Qin mainly just read off of her slides which were pretty wordy. She couldn't stand people talking so would stop the class every 10 minutes or so to stare at people to stop. There is a ridiculous amount of homework that is due before each test so try to break that up. Other chem professors at Umass are better at explaining tough concepts.
Sharon's lectures are fairly boring, especially if you know basic chem concepts. She pre-posts the PowerPoints on Moodle, so you don't need to take notes in class and focus on the many clicker questions instead. She tends to go very slow and stop if she hears side conversations, but her tests are super easy.
Shes probably a really nice lady, but shes wicked tough to understand and if someone makes a noise in class shell stop and stare at them. And then continue by complaining that students dont pay attention to her. The exams are super easy, but she assigns a ton of homework for each exam. Definitely space it out!
I hated this class. She goes too quickly through slides and expects everyone to have understood the material in a matter of 3.2 seconds. Pays more attention to side conservations (about chem) than people raising their hands. Be prepared to put 150% in this class.
Sharon is by far the worst professor I have ever had. Her exams are spaced poorly and stacked at the end of the semester right before the final. The questions include problems that were not taught in class or in the OWL assignments or pyramid exams. Even iclicker participation correctness would range from about 14% to 40% for the entire class.
Sharon is a really nice woman and cares a lot about helping her students succeed. Her accent can sometimes be difficult to understand, but if you pay attention you will be fine. The tests are mostly based on the OWL assignments with conceptual stuff from the lectures. She gives a couple extra credit opportunities. You just have to put in the work.
Just do all your homework and never skip a class. Get atleast 65+ on all your exams and take your upper pyramid exams. You will be guaranteed to pass! I got 60, 60, 74.4 and 64 and still managed to get a B- in the class with the help of h/w and attendance which counts for clicker questions so dont take that lightly since she still takes off 10%.
I am so lucky to have taken Sharon for chem 111. she knows her stuff and makes class fun and interesting. GO TO CLASS and don't rely on extra credit (that she gave a lot of towards the end) to boost your grade. always do the OWL homework, take good notes, and do the clicker questions in class. I so wish I could get her for chem112!!
The professor seems to be the person to get blamed, but the fact is that chem112 is harder than chem111. I had Sharon for both and she's not the best, but her explanations can help if you pre-take the notes (she posts them on Moodle). Not too many clicker questions, so you don't really need to pay attention in class.
She tries to go through slides quickly, so try to do OWL homework beforehand if you son't want to get lost. Beware of iClicker questions. If you speak during class, she'll catch you out, and she's really picky about the noise level of the class. She does occasionally do cool demos and gives out candy for halloween, though.
Easy A class. Maam puts lots of information on the slides and they are easy to follow. iClicker class attendance is annoying but necessary to prevent slackers. Just study the lectures and do the OWL Homework and you can score 100%.
Each thing led to the next subject must master to understand following chapters
If you took high school chem this class should be easy, just do all the OWL's because they're helpful and count for a grade. She also gives good extra credit, but her lectures can get boring so be prepared for that.
Sharon is a great lady. I never really paid attention to class because CHEM111 is essentially all of HS chem, and her lectures were kind of boring but as long as you study properly from her lectures and do the practice exams, you will pass easily. She gives extra credit on homework, iclickers, and practice exams, which is a nice grade booster!
Sharon is nice and does her best. She does care about her students, but it's hard to teach a huge lecture. Chem is hard for me, but I've found that as long as I read the textbook on OWL before doing the OWLs, it's easy to work through and understand. I only went to class to make sure I got the iClickers. She's fine for Chem 112 too.
I have to say this prof is soooo great, and thanks for her explanation so clearly, I got a good grade.
A good amount of HW, but if you do them, then tests are ridiculously easy. Does have an asian accent, but it ain't the worst. Does have online videos of lectures. Attend for iclicker points If you had high school chemistry then this class will be more of a review. If you hate chemistry, just pay attention and use HW to reinforce the material.
Sharon tries, but isn't always the best at explaining things. However, her PPTs are all very clear and posted online. Theres a lot of online OWL HW buts its very helpful (often more than lectures). Tests are just like OWL assignments and only cover material from class. You have to put in some effort, but the class isn't conceptually difficult.
I basically relied on SI sessions and learning from homework to do well in this class. It gets pretty distracting and annoying when Sharon stops at least one time every class to address one student who is talking with a friend at a low volume that no one else in the class notices. She seems like a nice person.
Sharon is the best Chemistry professor hands down. She explains concepts extremely well and prepares you for the test so long as you put the work in. If you have taken AP Chemistry before, take this class again and you will get an easy A.
One of the heaviest lectures I've attended at UMass. Chemistry is obviously a lot of information however it is extremely hard to understand and follow in class. Doing your Owls is one of the best resources for learning and the TAs study sessions also teach you more than you'll learn in lecture. The one upside is her tests are all multiple choice.
The class is just iClicker, 4 tests, online HW, and lab. The lab portion of the grade is easy to get a 100% on and will help balance out the grade. She has a policy to replace a low test score if your final grade is higher than the average of all your tests. Overall, her lectures can be a bit boring and sometimes hard to stay focused on. Nice lady!
Your homework will be incredibly difficult and near impossible to complete. Your entire worth as a human being will be based on being able to solve purposely overly difficult chemistry question created on broken software. the OWL assignments are an insane amount of work, and often the software malfunctions, earning you a 0 when you've put in work.
Xueying was a pretty good professor. I would recommend going to lectures because she does give participation credit through iclicker questions. Her lectures are a little boring but are very important to attend to understand the material. The only downside to this class was the amount of homework. She gives a lot of hard and tedious homework.
The material in Chem 111 is easy for me, but I learned most of the materials through OWLs not the professor. She has an accent that can be hard to understand sometimes; however, she is a very nice person and is willing to help you if you need anything.
Attending class is very important because that is how you will learn all the information and the homework assigned help master the content you learned in lecture. I think lectures are well organized and very helpful to my learning.
Very easy A if you've taken AP Chem. The topics aren't hard to grasp and Sharon does a good job explaining things. Good amount of OWL homework, you won't pass if you don't do it but there's unlimited attempts. Lectures are absolutely mandatory online.
Professor Qin is a brilliant explainer of topics. She really knows the material and wants to teach you, but remote learning ruined my experience. All her lectures are prerecorded from what seems like another semester. And we don't have any real synchronous classes. I barely know her or my classmates. But she's great through emails and office hours
Prof Sharon's lectures were long and packed with info, but she never threw any curveballs on exams. She was extremely accessible outside of class and made sure you had several ways to ask questions whether to her, the TAs or in SI sessions. I highly recommend her for Chem111 or literally any other chem class she teaches, she's awesome.
If you've taken AP chemistry in high school, chem 111 will be no problem. Lectures are pretty straightforward, and you learn most of the material through the OWL problems. Overall a solid professor, there aren't any curveballs on the exams and she discusses the more challenging problems prior to the exam.
I took AP Chem in high school, so I don't know how much my experience will reflect others', but Prof Sharon was a really good teacher! Her lectures were very informative (even though they were asynchronous), and the exams matched the practice exams closely. She really wants you to succeed; do the OWLS and study for the exams and you will do great!
Qin recorded her lectures asynchronously, so it was very impersonal but lecture watching was mandated for points. She did make intro chemistry very easy to learn, so I would recommend her.
The class was asynchronous, so as long as you can follow the OWL assignments, youll be fine
the exams are very similar to her practice exams and the owl homework was pretty easy as well.
She is excellent at explaining things during lecture. She has a fairly thick accent, but I had no trouble understanding her. The homework can be a bit tough though. As for the exams, they should be easy as long as you attend/watch lectures and do the practice exams.
I absolutely adore Professor Qin. Her lectures are easy to follow and she emphasizes what is important and what you will need to know for the exams, which are exactly like the OWLs. Theres a decent amount of OWLs to do per chapter but if you do it as the lectures go its easy to manage. Make sure to do the Lab + OWLs
Her lectures are clear, but her lecturing style really frustrates me. She will also stop lecturing over the tiniest thing until whatever it is stops bugging her. If you have any prior chem knowledge, you'll be just fine with her lectures, but the OWL's are more useful for learning. Shame you have to come to class for clicker points.
Sharon is very nice and has pretty straight-forward lectures, but she moves very fast and if this is your first time taking chemistry you'll have to work pretty hard. The exams are all online evening exams and are taken on OWL (25 Qs multiple choice)
Prof. Qin is overall a solid professor, although I will say her lectures are pretty fast paced but thankfully she uploads the ppts/lecture replay video on moodle. This class has a very heavy workload imo, lots of homework but the exams are just like the homework questions/practice exam. if you put in the work (which will be a lot) you can get an a
Qin was fine. The class overall was fine. The tests were 25 multiple choice each and there are labs every other week. You should try to do the homework early rather than save all of it to the end, they can often be quite tedious. She really values participation and will often ask you to participate in the lectures.
Sharon is really great. She really cares about teaching and wants you to do well. iClicker is important so just dont skip lectures and if you do the OWL assignments it will be an easy A. She is fun, flexible, and her exams are 25 questions multiple choice. Such a caring person and a great prof, wayy better than the other chem111 profs.
I'm so happy that the stars aligned and I signed up for Dr. Qin's course! Her lectures are clear; she does an amazing job at breaking down confusing topics. Her exams are straight-forward (no curveballs), so if you do well on the practice test, you'll do well on the real one. She's so caring, and it's obvious that she wants her students to succeed!
Sharon was a good professor. Sometimes she went a little fast in lectures and it was hard to keep up. I didn't take AP Chem in hs so this was my first time learning chem since soph year of hs, but she did a good job teaching all. She was really nice and understanding. There is a *lot* of homework to keep up with, but do it, it helps a lot.
She was ok. She flies through the slideshow so it's kind of hard to take notes but they're posted online so you can go back to them. She is very insistent you don't talk during class and will stop class if she hears people talking. The tests were basically just the homework assignments with different values, so if you're good at chem, you'll pass
OWLS and Lectures are consistent with other chem classes/professors. Was easy to reach out too. Class was pretty straightforward. Practice Exams mirrored eExams. Has a final exam (exams are like 65% of grade)
This is the worst class I have ever taken at this school. Lectures are unclear and she races through them and the owls teach me more than her. The owls are so tedious and take so long to get a 100, so manage your time. Exams are hard. If you have a lot of background info on chem you will be fine.
Goes through too much content in a single lecture in a droning monotone. Doesn't answer student's questions. OWLs are miserable because I learn the content as I do the HW instead of in class (this takes me forever to do). I highly recommend taking this class with another professor. Do not take this class if you don't have to.
This isn't an intro to chem class at all. She will zoom by class and tell you to memorize the material with no help. Additionally she'll go 100 mph in class and it'll be hard to understand what she's even going over. The OWL assignments are tedious and super answer specific, but doing it will teach you better than she can.
Professor Qin is very organized and reasonable, the only thing that I would say that's negative is that she goes really fast, however Chem 111 has a lot of material to go through in a short period of time. She is helpful in office hours, and make sure you really focus on the practice exams for the actual exams, they are usually similar.
I am a good student+put in lots of effort. Exams are 60% of your grade. Lectures from this professor will NOT help you, you must rely on OWL to teach you and for you to do well on exams. The only way you will succeed is if ur High School teacher taught you before she did or you put in maximal effort. Sad that $100 OWL can teach better than her :/
Worst teacher I've ever had. Be prepared to learn absolutely nothing from lectures as she races through topics and leaves you behind. Owls teach you way more than her but will also take you hours and a lot of raging to complete. Tests are extremely hard. The SI Sophia is a 100x better teacher. If you get stuck with her... THAT'S TOUGH!!!
Professor Qin's class was very rigorous and fast paced. Owl homework are tedious and take up most of your time. Owl textbook and problem explanations are more helpful than her teaching. She is very contradicting when teaching and very condescending if you do not know a topic. If you do not have a prior knowledge of chemistry, good luck. F dat B
do not even think about taking her for chem 111 unless you're an absolute genius. she expects you to know absolutely everything on the first day of teaching the lesson. owls take like 80% of the day to complete. she's so awful at teaching and understanding the students. she might look nice but she's praying on your downfall. disgusting.
If you're amazing at chemistry, I would say take her if you want. If not, stay away from her classes. I learned nothing in her lectures at all. I took a PLTL class on the side for extra credit and I learned everything from my teacher. she goes way too fast and doesn't stop for anyone. I swear she doesn't want you to pass her class. stay away
If you're cracked at chem you'll be fine, otherwise, do not take her. Her lectures are fast paced and she always says "you should know this by now" and "this is very simple." She doesn't understand that not everyone learns at the pace she goes at. She stops class if she sees someone whispering; very disruptive on her part. Did not like her at all.
Frequently stops due to 1 or 2 people talking (wouldn't notice if she didn't). Laughed at us for not knowing the answers to brand new topics multiple times, saying things like "this is a really easy question". Overall negative energy about the lecture. Exams don't allow you to show your understanding of topics, no partial credit. No practice final
Im a bit shocked at some of the reviews. She was a bit fast paced, and she did get annoying at times. But if you are pretty good with science you should be pretty ok in her class. Lectures were recorded, full updated lecture notes were available. What was even better was all her tests were multiple choice! Attendance is mandatory.
The classes go so fast and the tests are unnecessarily hard. She continues teaching no matter whether the class is understanding or not. Attendance is very important - and there is a lot of homework that comes with it.
Hates when distracted in class, she's not helpful in a group setting but is ok when in one on ones. She is a nice lady, just a very overwhelming amount of work.
She goes very fast in lectures and there's a good amount of homework. The tests are hard to do good on if you're not naturally amazing at chemistry, but most exams are exactly like the practice exam.
This class is so hard and it doesn't help that her lectures are confusing. Everything that you learn comes from doing the owl homeworks but attendance is mandatory so you have to go to lecture anyways.
If you are not 100 percent confident with chem, never take this class. I learned so much better from Youtube, or just by reading textbooks. I rather not attend the lecture, however, participation grade counts. Concepts are pretty simple but her explanation makes them very confusing. It has been a stressful semester just because of one class.
Lectures are very fast paced and you have to be naturally good with chemistry to do well on exams. The exams are way more difficult than the homework and many times the questions on the exams have never been seen before in a single homework assignment. She definitely treats intro chem like a weed-out class. Might be intentional but it's awful.
Some might find Chemistry difficult, but Xueying explains the material extremely well. You just have to pay attention in class. She is kind and funny, but she wants the class to be quiet, so everyone can hear her speak. I think she genuinely wants her students to do well, as there are many extra credit options. I would recommend taking her.
You learn more from the insane amount of homework than her. Also, the homework is nothing like the exams. Prepare to study the homework for hours and then receive a barely passing grade on the exams despite getting 80-100% correct on the practice tests. Go to every class because a 100% in the attendance section will boost your grade.
Sharon always requires attendance which is annoying. She will stop the lecture if 2 people are whispering in the back of the class. The grading though was fair with short exams. There is a lot of homework but you have unlimited attempts.
Lots of OWL homework but you have unlimited attempts. You won't pass if you skip lecture. 3 exams and a final that contribute heavily to the overall course. Qin takes time explaining examples in lectures and provides clear and detailed lectures along with lecture recordings. TAs were not helpful.
Exams weigh for most of your grade. She doesn't care about the students who don't have a well versed background in chemistry. Has very low patience when you ask for help or express concerns. She seems annoyed most of the time will always refer you to the TA if you need help.
It's hard to get a good rep as a chemistry professor, simply because the subject is tough. However, Professor Qin does an excellent job. She is organized, efficient, and funny, but she does move quick! Generally, if a student were to complete the assignments, shut up and attend lectures, and complete the practice exams, they should pass.
The professor only cares about rushing through the syllabus and discourages questions as a result. The course is awful and the OWL assignments take ages to complete.
I took chem111 over the winter semester and loved it. The OWL homework are lovely in comparison to mastering physics. She allowed us to complete any missing homework for credit which was a absolute god send in getting an A. The online labs were very difficult, but that was not in her control. Exams are nothing like practice exams, study everything!
I personally learned more from reading the book and answering the owls than from listening to her lectures. She is super caring though. She made our Quiz 3 relatively easy, which I think is because a lot of people got low in the 2nd one, and she gave 4 extra credits if we watched 2 online videos. Answer the owls and attend class for participation.
I dont like chem very much but this class was fine. Exams were entirely multiple-choice. Owl hw was annoying but mid way thru the semester she got so many complaints about the hw that she significantly cut down the amount we had to do which was very nice of her. Definitely do the practice test before the actual exam.
She starts with the basics. Lots of material. Not tolerant of talking during her lectures. Exams and multiple choice. Pretty good at explaining the material. OWLs are pretty helpful. Has SI reviews and PLTL - recommend both. Exams are NOT cumulative. Final will replace the lowest exam if the final is higher than the average of the first 3 exams.
Sharon is a good professor, she is very engaging and tries her best to explain the material. There are many resources for this class if you are struggling, and Sharon also has office hours. I wouls say she is the best professor to have Chem 111.
Ngl this class is a complete and utter disaster class and the only one to blame is professor qin herself. Lectures are mandatory and you have to drop 60 bucks on an iclicker. I would rather tie stones to myself and jump in the pond than attend another one of these horrific and painstaking lectures. DO NOT TAKE QINS CLASS
Prof. Qin dosnt give out individual extra credit because everything needs to be even for each student, but she did give out a couple extra points thoughout the semester. Chem isnt fun and it can be challenging but she does her best to explain the concept and material. Theres 3 exams and a final, and owl homeworks are a big part of your grade.
Sharon is a great professor who clearly wants her students to succeed. Her explanations are easy to understand and she lectures at a comfortable pace to take notes. I enjoyed her class and would definitely recommend her for 111!
Very fast paced, runs over concepts rather quickly and the slides are a bit disorganized at best. Grading is alright, she provides plenty of opportunities to keep your grades up even with low exam scores. I just wish I learned more in this course. OWLs teach you everything you need to know -- typically better than the lectures.
Lectures are not super engaging always but I do like how she goes through practice problems with the class. She often stops lecture if she hears people whispering, claiming they are a disruption to the class when in reality it is a lot more distracting when she spends 10+ minutes every lecture pausing for people no one notices anyways. Otherwise ok
This class definitely had a lot of homework but I felt that this class was very fair. The practice exams were very very similar to the real exams so the exams always felt fair. She also gave helpful extra credit opportunities and clearly wanted you to succeed. However, lectures were not the most engaging and I learned best by reading on OWL.
Exams are worth 60% of your grade. You have to complete and understand the owls completely to do well on the exams. Practice exams were almost identical to the actual exams. Make sure to go to all the lectures and SI sessions, those really helped.
Sharon was a very sweet professor. It is sometimes hard to understand her because of the thick accent, but you soon get used to it. She does take her job seriously and seems like she wants students to succeed. She does mention "class policy" multiple times, so reading the syllabus is VERY important to know what is due when.
Passive aggressive
I dont know why people are giving her such bad ratings. By far one of the best professors ive had. I think the other reviews just dont understand what it is like to take a real college class. The OWLs are annoying, but really do help for the exams. The practice exams were almost exactly the same as the real exam. Made chem 111 really easy for me.
I enjoyed Sharon's class. She explains things very clearly and concisely and it is obvious she cares about her students, indirectly. iClicker 2 is required for attendance though. Expectations are clear. Not that difficult but it obviously depends on your affinity for science, especially chemistry.
Worst class i have ever taken, worst teacher I have ever had. Lectures are mind numbingly boring and sharon assigns a crippling amount of OWL homework. She also has a fairly strong accent so lectures are even harder to understand. Generally does not seem to care about student success.
She's nice. I really liked her class. If you're attending the lectures and doing homework on your own, you're good.
Sharon's a great professor, chem is just a really difficult course. She does assign a lot of OWL homework, but there's a ton of extra help outside of class that can help with it.
Sharon is not the most helpful professor I have ever had, mostly because when a student asks questions in class she answers them with a passive aggressive response. 60% of the grade is exam based, an iclicker 2 is required for attendance.
Couldn't stand this class. You had to buy an iClicker for attendance and OWL for HW. OWL taught better than her. Lectures are incredibly boring with her reading slides word for word. Passive aggressive and stops class for the slightest noise. If you've done AP or IB chem you'll be fine. If not, you're screwed if you don't go to TAs or SI sessions
The content was difficult, and lectures could be hard to follow at times. She tended to skim through some of the more difficult concepts. OWL homeworks were tedious and took up a lot of time, but once completed, did help with hammering in the understanding of concepts. Chance to get lowest exam grade replaced with the final exam.
Overall, she's an ok professor. Lots of OWL homework and lectures are very boring but class is easy, especially if you took AP chem. Does not tolerate any talking during class and will stop class if anyone is talking. Exams are short, all multiple choice, and fairly easy. Worth taking for an easy A but be prepared to fall asleep during lectures.
Stay on task, don't fall behind and you will be fine in Sharons class. The exams are almost identical to the practice exams, so if you do well in those you'll be fine. Sharon gives alot of chances for extra credit so always take those and you'll get a guaranteed A.
Sharon is great I would recommend her if you need to take Chem 111 for any reason. She is very understanding when it comes to personal issues and gives occasional opportunities for extra credit. Exams are tightly timed and there is a substantial amount of homework, both of which are consistent with any other Chem 111 course.
Lecture slides are self-explanatory and extremely helpful in understanding the content; she does a good job of explaining each point, even if she does move at a faster pace. The owl homework reinforces the material and over-prepares you for the exam. GO TO TA EXAM REVIEWS! This is how I got an A. The exam reviews are basically the same as the exam.
Unnecessarily difficult. Assigns a ton of work that is not helpful and is insanely test heavy
She wasn't the most engaging professor, but she made her points clear. Her exams were exactly like the practice exams. Chem111 was overall a super easy class if you did the homework, and took notes in class. She did get upset when she heard people talking, and would pause the lecture, but overall it was a breeze.
Farty teacher
she was good, just not my learning style
As long as you keep up in the class, put in the work, complete and use OWLs to study, you'll recieve an A. Plenty of extra credit, attend PLTL and go to review sessions, they really help.
Take her repeated advice about how to pass her class! Time consuming but because of the quantity of info, not the way she teaches it. She can tend to go fast. She was very kind in interactions. She will stare down groups of people talking while she's lecturing.
Took her once and had to retake. She makes the course and its material a lot more difficult to comprehend and practice. It felt like the exams and OWLs were not representative of what she was lecturing, and if it was, she would hardly lecture enough on the important material.
As long as you do all the OWLs, attend review sessions, and actually try and study you will do well. I ended with an A doing these things and you can too.
Just no. She is so cold and it's clear she doesn't care about her students in the slightest. That made it so hard to seek help and suceed. Im a STEM major and an A average student, but this class was something else. Trust me, avoid her if you can
There are homeworks on owl. There are three mid term exams and one final exam. All around 23-26 questions. You can join a PLTL for 1.5% extra credit on final grade. Iclickers are important for attendance and she only wants physical iclickers. IF YOU MISS ONE EXAM YOU AUTOMATICALLY FAIL!!!! It doesn't matter how well you do in the class.
CLASS: CHEMISTRY 111 | SEMESTER: SPRING 2024 -- Professor Qin is informative and caring. Her lectures are helpful, and she answers all questions but will stop the class for the slightest sound. Attendance is "mandatory" if you want the iClicker points. The OWL homework is exceptionally long. Also, there are four exams, and they are pretty fair.
Lots of homework. Attendance is graded enforced by iClicker. Expects you to learn information before class on your own, but no one does. 4 exams, exactly like the study guide. Don't sit near the front because if you make a whisper she will pause the entire class to ask if you have a question.
The class isn't bad, it's just the fact that tests are worth a lot of your grade. I have never been good at chemistry or a good test taker. When I asked her for help or tips on how to do better, in short words she just said to do better on the tests.
This course is easy for those who like chemistry, but for those who don't I would advise against it with Qin. The slideshows really aren't bad but there is a ton of information and she expects it to be reviewed outside of class. However, the practice exams are exactly like the real exams, which made it very easy for me.
Great professor, just listen in lectures you will be fine!
Sharon thoroughly explains every morsel of information. Her lectures can be dense, but she often uses other tools like in-class experiments or videos to demonstrate a concept. Missing lectures can be difficult especially when it comes to math-heavy chapters because she doesn't post completed notes so you won't have worked out solutions.
Not too bad of a class but it's a ton of work especially for a gen-ed. She grades attendance so you have to go but if you just do the owl while she lectures and pay attention to when she gives an iclicker question you will be fine. Also spam the practice tests because they're almost identical to the real thing.
She's not awful but she definitely expects you to have lots of prior knowledge which can get annoying. She rarely goes over questions with the same difficulty as those on the exams, and even though the homework is harder than what she teaches it's slightly easier than the exam. You are going to end up teaching yourself most of the content.
She teaches well and explains all concepts nicely. If u listen well in class and make notes u are definitely going to do good in exams. There are 4 exams total throughout the semester including the final exam. Exams are very similar to the practice exams with easy questions.
I am kind of bad at chemistry but she is a good teacher TAKE HER ADVICE & you will do very well. You need to dedicate some time to review the lectures & do the OWL the practice exams are kind of accurate, anyone mad just didnt do their work and never studied. She does take iclicker attendance and its only there to boost your grade. She is my queen.
She is super nice and caring. Her SI and TAs are amazing. Her lectures are ok but her slides are fantastics and clear and you will understand. I highly recommend her class especially if you've already taken chemistry. Even without I think you'll do great. The practice exam is identical to the test so just do that.
She expects you to have a lot of prior knowledge about chemistry, for me this was hard as I had forgotten everything from HS chem. She doesn't give extra credit. She isn't a very understanding person. If you choose her try to study up on chem before the class starts, that's the only thing that will save you.
Detailed lectures with a lot of material given for homework to master topics. If you do the OWLS and attend help sessions when you're struggling, you will have no issue passing this class. Professor Qin is very caring and wants her students to understand the material, she also does a great job keeping grades updated. Overall a great professor.
Professor Qin's CHEM111 class is challenging but manageable. Attend lectures, complete OWLs, and use unstuck AI - it's a great study tool! Expect a fair but rigorous course.
Sharon is a very caring person, and she genuinely wants her students to succeed in her class. The only thing really difficult about this class is that you have spend hours doing the OWL assignments outside of class, but the OWL assignments are really helpful for understanding content. Her tests are exactly like the practice tests too!.
Great professor that I can understand and follow the problem she does on the board. Although the only downside is sometimes during lectures she gets easily distracted. Otherwise would take again.
This professor was good, but lectures are boring if you have good chemistry knowledge. Owl homework does the majority of the teaching. She provided one extra credit for the whole semester. Emphasizes not giving more/additional extra credit. Exams have many repeat questions from practice exams. She was also very cute and did chemistry demonstrations
Lectures are decently well made, but sometimes brushes past complicated topics quickly Sharon's biggest pet peeve is not talking while she lectures, which you kinda just roll your eyes about HW (Owl assignments) are tedious and not very beneficial. SI + practice exams are all you need. TA reviews often have questions taken straight from the exam
The lectures can be boring if you took chemistry in high school, but overall she is a fairly interesting lecturer who cares about her students. She usually reads off her slides but explains concepts fairly well when needed. If you do all of the OWL homework (there is a lot of it) fully and on time, the class will be a breeze.
Take her out of the Chem 111 teachers. All her exams were 25 multiple choice (3 midterms and 1 final) and the questions were just like the OWL questions. Be prepared to do lots of OWL questions, don't cram it. Attend the TA Exam reviews- the exam questions are exactly like them, sometimes the exact same and was really helpful before the exam.
She expects students to put in work and be respectful and if you do this you'll do good in her class. She gets back to students in a good amount of time and encourages students to reach out if they need help. In class slides are hard to understand sometimes though and big ideas are sometimes brushed over.
You'll do well if you study. She explains everything fairly well, but going over your notes after class is important. Lectures are fast-paced, so be prepared. Once you get your concepts down, you'll be fine. She doesn't like any noise during her lectures, though. TA review sessions are really helpful.
It's chem so it's difficult but she is by far the best professor for chem. She gives mad extra credit and gives extensions and reminders for all deadlines. You need Iclicker but you do for most classes so.
not the most exciting, but she explains everything super well and efficiently, and if you go to class and work hard on the OWLs, you'll be fine. exams are exactly like practice exams so no surprises. lab is a bit annoying but often you can finish 1-1.5 hrs early if you're efficient, and it's not very hard
Sharon is honestly so nice and very smart. She gave so much extra credit. Lectures are fast paced but if you just do the owl homework you'll be fine. Her exams are all multiple choice and 70 mins for 25 questions and her practice tests are just like exams.
Her lectures are useful if you are very engaged, she will repeat this over the course of the semester. Make sure you do decently on the tests because only homework, attendance, and labs are the other grade categories.
Sharon is a nice person but not a good teacher. Her explanations in lecture are not very helpful and half the time the homework is not even something we did in class. Her lectures are also very fast paced so definitely pay attention or at least try your best to. I would take another teacher if you have the option.
Chem is objectively hard, the TAs she picks for the labs make it even worse. She talks very fast and it can be hard to follow the lectures. Good with accommodations, although the workload is pretty heavy. Tests are like practice quizzes and attendance is mandatory but not always enforced (through iClicker).
She was good I just hate chemistry. Still didn't understand it after finishing the class but I passed so yolo
She goes through the material very fast and doesn't answer questions in class. She gives some extra credit points, but to do well in this class, GO TO THE SI SESSIONS AND TA SESSIONS!!! You have to put a lot of effort into the class to do well. Good luck if you have her I'm praying for you.
Chem is just hard in general.60%of your grades are from exams so be sure to do decent on them if you want a good grade.I don't think she's a bad professor I just don't think her lecture style is for me. She has very neat notes and is very accommodating when sick during exams. Join pltl it helps with your grades and studying. Practice owls questions
Goated. Lectures are great, slides helpful in and out of lecture time. iClicker questions for attendance. Reasonable homework load, late submissions allowed. Exams are similar to practice, she's very explicit with what wants us to know. Never really talked to her outside of class but she seems nice.
She is a very meh professor. I relied on redoing OWL homework, doing the practice exam twice, and going to SI sessions to get A's on exams. Her office hours and TA office hours aren't super helpful, and her lectures were boring. Go to the lectures tho b/c if you go to more than you get extra credit points at the end of the semester.
With all due respect to her, she made learning chemistry a lot harder than it should be. Practice tests are not like the real tests (at all), she gives very misleading information about the said tests, the final exam was very uneven with course material, and owl homework's very rarely reflect the test. Hard to contact as well.
Her teaching style is very good and helpful!
Sharon is a great professor! Most of the info covered in Chem 111 is material I already knew from basic high school chem, so the course was not hard. Prof can be a bit strict about students whispering in class, but besides that she is a good lecturer
Lectures were clear and easy to follow. The class before exams was review and exactly like the test. If you took chemistry in high school you will easily do well. Use OWLs to study for exams. Lots of extra credit. Great class!
Class is difficult but because of the amount of material, not the teacher. If you did AP Chem you will be fine. If not, definitely check out TA meetings and extra help opportunities (what saved me). Your worst test grade gets dropped if you do well on the final. Be ready for lots of homework.
sharon is great and really loves the subject. she moves a bit fast for me but explains topics well and you can tell she cares. practice exams are similar to real ones and she will do some fun experiments in front of the class sometimes. chem is a hard class regardless of your teacher, take her over hanz for sure. go to sis, youll be fine
If you are a good test taker and have a good hold on chem, extremely easy class. outlines very clearly what is going to be on exams. homework is essential, really reinforces the content
Her tests are so much easier than the other professors and only have multiple choice whereas the other professors have fill in the blank. Attendance is mandatory for iClicker. Her lectures are boring but you don't have to pay attention because she records her lectures and posts the notes. She doesn't like when ppl talk during lecture.
Worst professor ever
Honestly one of the best professors at the entire school, she was kind and approachable and even at times a little funny. Her exams are directly related to the practice exams, her lectures are easy to follow and comprehensive. at times she may go fast but she posts all her notes so there is no issue finding out parts your may have missed.
She also goes by Sharon. I thought Sharon was a great teacher who was funny and caring. If you show up to class, pay attention, take notes, do the Owl homework assignments this class should be pretty chill for you.
Great teacher
Sharon was a great teacher for Chem 111. The homework helped me to learn what the material was, and the exams were multiple choice, with no surprises from what we learned in class. Homework and exams were basically the same thing. She was accessible during office hours, and there was a lot of support in SI sessions.
Professor Sharon is SO fantastic. If you need to take Chem 111, take it with her. Exams are super fair as long as you lock in a lot. Success is possible; in fact, you may even exceed your expectations.
She is a good teacher and explains concepts well. The hw is the same as the exams and there are 4 exams.
So sweet and actually wants her students to participate. Highly recommend doing the practice exams before each test and reviewing the OWL homework. If you put in the effort, you'll do well!
Exams worth 60% of your grade. Good luck if you're taking any other classes w this. Incredibly time consuming
Not a bad teacher, it's the content that's difficult. If you rewatch the lectures and do the OWL homeworks, this class is manageable. PLTL for extra credit, final replaces lowest scored test if it's higher than the averages of the other exams. Go to SI sessions if struggling, and practice exams are very similar to real exams, so really study those!
She's great professor and explains concepts in an easy-to-understand way. Lectures can sometimes be a bit boring, but I personally found that she over-explained certain concepts. She taught at a good pace overall, and exams are all fair multiple choice. Definitely do the practice exams, and you'll be fine as long as you keep up with the workload!
She is a great professor and I liked her teaching style a lot. 111 is an easy class but you have to go to lecture to fully understand everything.
Sharon is such a sweet professor. Chem 111 was difficult for me but if you put in the work you will do fine. Homework through OWL for every chapter which can be very time consuming and not that helpful for exams. 3 total exams plus a final. She gives practice exams for the first 3 and they are basically identical to the actual exam.
