she is very bad teacher. she has a bad pronuntiation, bad english in short is worst teacher in UVSC. don't take her!!!!!!!
she is the worst teacher in the world
she is really bad as a teacher. her classes are very hard and she does not care about the students grades or if they are learning. I guess she should choose another kind of job but in china. maybe the army.
Calculus is hard, but she explained things pretty well. If the class is small she has your practice many problems in class, which is very helpful. I probably wouln't seek her out as a teacher, but wouldn't drop just because she is the teacher.
I thought she did an excellent job teaching the material. she followed along with the book making it easy to study at home. she always did at least one example from each section of the homework. she is a great teacher
She is from China, which does make it difficult to understand at first, however I have found her to be very straight forward on the tests, no surprises. She is pretty leaniant on grading the tests, I know I should have maybe a C but because she is leanient I have a B+
Ya Li has a very heavy chinese accent, but you can get used to it very quickly. She follows the book and shows good examples. Her tests are very straight-forward. She knows how to teach math very well and answers pretty much any question you ask her through easy to follow equations.
I agree with the other comments she doesn't care if the students are learning and doesn't really go out of her way! She always has small classes for a reason she needs a new profession!
She talks really fast but she will answer any questions and is pretty helpful.
She does pretty well in teaching a difficult class. Her tests are hard and she has a thick accent. You will get very used to the words WHAT? and RIGHT?
She does have a heavy accent and uses the word right a lot but she is very helpful. She will answer any questions from the homework. She goes fast sometimes but if the section is especially difficult she will take her time.
i took her in summer. one of the worst teachers ever took. She might be god for students for students from china.
I can understand the negative comments. The problem is Algebra sucks and the teachers HAVE to cover a certain amount of material and only have so much time in class. Like the other comments said, she does take time to explain if you ask, most of the time people just don't. She is actually really cool, you can joke around with her.
This is probably the worst math teacher I have ever had. Her test are very hard and are not curved at all. She answers homework questions but doesn't like to review what she already taught and kinda makes you feel dumb for asking questions. The only good thing is that you don't have homework due everyday.
I've definately had better math teachers. She teaches very fast, her English is tough to understand, but she does know her math.
very tough class. she moves quickly and is difficult to understand. the tests were hard. I got a D in the class and I am a 3.8 gpa student. yes I get to retake, and no, it will not be from her. if you ask for help, she asks; were you not here yesterday, if you were, she asks, did you not do the homework? if you are lucky, you may get an answer
May God have Mercy on your Soul!!!!!!!
Her biggest problem is that her accent is so thick. If she spoke perfect English she would actually be a good teacher. She's smart and cares about the students. Her teaching method isn't bad but math is hard enough without trying to interpret most of the lecture through her thick accent.
hard to understand. Goes to fast........I would NOT recommend her!
ajkdhfjdahljfhadljhflja, right? ahjhkajhdljhlaha, right? ahaljhtljhrljhljer, right? aljdnjlfnljanj right? (meantime she is scribbling something on the board) djljfnljdnlfn, right? That pretty much sums up my semester in her class.
I worried about taking this class, however, I was very impressed with Ya Li and felt like she did a great job! Yes, she spoke fast and with an accent, however she had overhead transparencies to help with the language. I would recommend her.
She is one of the best teachers I have ever had. She uses excellent examples and prepares you well for the test. You will have to work hard in her class because the subject is math so deal with it. She is always willing to help you with any questions inside or outside of class.
I had a very hard time in this class. I am not a math wiz. I didn't understand the lectures very well, and ended up mostly using the book to try and teach myself. Dr. Li is a very nice lady, but I would not suggest taking her class unless you understand math really well.
I didn't dislike her, but the class was hard and she wasn't very clear. I wouldn't get her again!
She is extremely hard to understand. She does not explain things well and her tests are very hard.
she works at a very fast pace. tests are pretty hard. i worked my butt off and got a C. a lot of material covered is not on the tests. she's friendly but can be hard to understand sometimes
show up, take detailed notes, ask questions on homework/ tests. Gives out study guides, helps when asked. overall i thought she was one of the best math teachers i have ever recieved.
I would definitely not recommend this teacher for anyone interested in doing well in college. She only teaches out of the book and if you have questions she looks at you like you are an idiot and refers you to a page in the book. I liked math before I took her class, so if you are not a math genius stay away from her class lie the plague.
easy teacher! teaches right from the book. lets you ask questions on the homework. all homework is worth a test, go to the math lab and you will get a 100%. if you do the hw the tests come right from it. test questions are easier than the hw. can be a little intimidating but overall very nice and super easy
Best Math class I have taken. It takes a few classes to get used to her accent but once you do she is fantastic. Just go to class and pay attention. she knows the material extremely well and explains everything in great detail.
She explained the concepts very well. Homework covered the same topics discussed in class. Tests were fair and she prepared us well for them. She made sure we would do well.
Dr. Li is a great professor. She is very well educated in mathematics and can answer virtually any question. She is kind and understanding. If you do the homework and come to class prepared to ask questions, you will do well. Her tests are not hard and she prepares you well for each test.
She prepared us well for our tests and test questions were very similar to questions given to us during the reviews. When it comes to grading, you don't get to drop any tests, but homework counts as one tests (which you can get help with at the tutor center). She was very understanding and starts each day by going over homework questions.
She is a very good teacher. Fair in her grading. Gives good examples.
She was very nice and explained things clearly. I must say that she has an accent but once you get used to it, it's not bad. She is well educated, gives wonderful examples and prepares her students well for tests.
Ya Li was a very good professor, and would help you with any question you had. Sometimes she was hard to understand, and sometimes she had a hard time understanding a specific question you would ask.
Since Analysis is a hard class I was hoping Dr. Li would shed a little light on the subject. She didn't. Her teaching was out of the book (which is hard to understand) rather than explaining it. The in class tests were easy, while her in class tests were nearly impossible to pass. Wouldn't recommend her for upper division courses.
I took a technology enhanced class from her. The only reasons I showed up for the weekly classes was to get the quiz points. On the few weeks that there was no in-class quiz, I skipped it because I couldnt understand her anyway. I thought she had a helpful attitude, but if it wasnt for the fact that I had online (pre-recorded) lectures from an
Math 1050. She is very nice and knows her stuff. She can be difficult to understand though. I took the tech enhanced class and was frustrated that she taught how to do things differently than the online videos. I only showed up each week so that I could get the points for taking the quizzes.
Don't get me wrong, she is VERY smart! But... this class was HARD! She teaches straight from the book, so you're better off learning in the math lab. Her tests are pretty hard. HW is only mandatory if you wish to drop a test to replace w/ HW. A little hard to understand, people who have taken this class know what i mean... "RIGHT!?!?"
I completely agree with the person below me!!! that is EXACTLY how it is!! if you take her, i hope you enjoy spending hours and hours in the math lab!!!!!!
Ya Li's class is not terribly hard. She listens to student input on tests and is willing to adjust her tests if something (ie - time required, information given) is unfair. The downfall to Ya Li is she hard to understand and moves super quickly through the material making it hard to keep up.
She is the best teacher at UVU. her pace is perfect. the difficulty is perfect. very respectful to students. i have no complaints. she really prepares you for your tests. her accent isnt difficult to understand so dont worry about that. she does go quickly, but its not even close to how fast professor fearnly goes. i think the is just the best.
She is very difficult to understand. Her accent is very thick and she sometimes misspells words. You are not allowed to use calculators on the tests. She will tell you that she will give easy enough questions and some turn out to be VERY difficult without a calculator.
Horrible! She is very smart so she makes the test harder than usual. I would study with people taking the same course but from different teachers and they couldn't even do the my problems from the study guide she gave us. Marks test questions wrong for the simplest things where you'd be usually docked a point or two. She is hard to understand.
Not my favorite teacher. She doesn't explain things well and often just reads through the book. I don't know if linear algebra is just hard to grasp or if it was just poorly taught. Probably a little of both.
I took the hybrid math course with Professor Li. You take in class quizzes every day but she doesn't mind if you turn them in late. She knows her math. She is very easy to work with. She wants you to succeed. I like her, but I HATE the class.
I had a hybrid class with her, which means you come to class and do quizzes and you do your homework online. She is always trying to help you succeed, but can be a little hard to understand (one of the reasons being her strong accent). She is brilliant, but the class can be really hard.
Difficult to understand and communicate with due to her strong accent. Hybrid way of learning is definitely not my way of learning! She often made the class feel inadequate, because we didn't understand how she does. I did like how you could turn in quizzes at any time though.
Once you get used to her accent the class is pretty easy. Tests are straight forward, if you can do the review you can do the test. She goes over difficult homework problems in class.
I dont' know why everyone thinks she has a thick accent. Her English is clear and understandable, so that isn't a problem at all. If you are going to take the hybrid class, make sure you set aside time to LEARN THE MATERIAL, because you'll have no idea what you're doing when you come to class to take the daily quiz. She helps us on the quizzes too.
She is adorable, makes me smile every class. Explains material well, answers questions thoroughly. My favorite thing about her was that her tests cover the most basic concepts with no tricky business. Although you can't use a calculator on the test she doesn't expect you to refine the answer to it's simplest form. Her accent is not a problem.
I took the hybrid class and found it pretty difficult. The homework assignments weren't bad at all, but I felt her tests did not go with the homework problems which made the tests very hard for me. Daily quiz everyday. No curves on tests and does not drop any tests. I would probably go with another professor.
Very hard class that is made harder by how much work she expects. Pre-chapter quiz (20 questions), pre section quiz (20), pre homework quiz (15), section homework (40+), post section quiz (20), "maintaining quiz" (20), and the chapter test (20). Besides the chapter test, expect to do 60+ questions a DAY between all the quizzes. What a joke.
Reviews are all over the place. If you struggle with math DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! You are warned, hybrid learning is awful, she is hard to understand and the tests literally have nothing to do with the 60-80 hw problems you do every night. Online math sucks! Youve been warned.
Took hybrid class. The videos(& google) were more helpful than lectures. You can ask questions, but doesn't really answer them. Tests? Kinda hard, but she gives partial credit. Daily Quizes are hard and weigh more than HW. Quizes are online, but in-class she changes which ?s to answer. Not too Techy, kinda frustrating.
The only thing I can say is, absolutely horrible, for a student who has gotten above 100% in previous math classes, I finished with a C+78.7%, impossible to understand, and you don't get the formulas on her tests which are 60% of your total grade. That is all.
Ya Li is a great teacher and she does teach class very well. She helped me out with homework and quizzes but doesn't give you the answer. Math 1050 is self explanatory and she will go over homework assignment in class if had trouble with it.
Save yourself some frustration and find a different teacher. She screws up simple math in her problems all the time (like a negative times a negative) and she just moves on. Even if she fits your schedule, find someone else.
DO NOT TAKE MATH WITH PROFESSOR LI!! She is very hard to understand when she speaks. She does not give clear examples in class. She was walking around class one day and i raised my hand to ask her a question, she came over and i asked my question and she just walked off without answering it.
She would be a great teacher for higher levels of math because she expects you to know all terminology and equations. When you ask for help, she doesn't give clear instructions for you to solve the equations. Most people do receive a B- or lower on her tests. Also, expect the tests to be hard, because they aren't always like her quizzes.
Seriously, just don't take a class from her. Even if it fits your class schedule you are better off finding another math class in a later semester. The class is a major headache. My biggest problem with her was when she was stumped or couldn't answer a question she would just move on and hope no one noticed or would blame it on the system.
She is not good explaining exercises in class, she only repeat on the blackboard the same exercises of book. It is not easy understand especially because when she writes is not so order. Give you a lot homework, quizzes or tests every day. It is too much stress with her. I got a good score, but it was not for her help. Moreover, she is kind.
Unwilling to help when I asked for it. In fact, she thought if I needed help, I shouldn't be in her class. Super thick accent and talks fast, unwilling to repeat herself. Is easily frustrated, treats you like a child. I wouldn't recommend her to anyone.
I took Ya Li for Math 2280 and Math 3310 and I really liked her for both. This was one of her first times teaching 3310 which was nice because she would learn with us and understood how hard the material was. She was great for 2280 because if you didn't remember something from a previous math class she covered it again. Got tests back very fast.
For upper division math classes she is great. One of the easiest graders and is really understanding of difficult circumstances. After being in the class for a day you get used to her accent. I was hesitant to take her because of the reviews I had seen, but she has been a great teacher this semester.
Hard to follow what she is doing on the board. She does problems students ask for help on by doing them in a way I think as if she was doing them for herself but with quick and minimal narration of the steps.
Ya Li is a great teacher. She teaches simply and slowly. If you just give an attempt on a problem, you will receive credit for it. The final was take home, not sure if that's normal. No extra credit or curve. Very limited homework problems.
Professor Li does have an accent, however, the math does not have any sort of accent, so that can't be an excuse to do poorly. She has homework due online which is really easy with the online homework assistance if needed. You can take home the daily quizzes no reason not to get 5/5. Tests are EXACTLY like the reviews, do well on those, get an A.
I took this class online. Professor Li only inputs six grades this whole semester. four of which are exams, one being the final, and the last, an overall homework grade. She doesn't actually teach anything, just gives you the link to the homework and you have to read the texbook and figure it out. The tests are extremely hard!
Ya Li is an amazing teacher and I loved her when I took Calc 3 from her. She's caring and wants to know if you are passing or not. Her accent takes a little while to get used to but, it's easy to understand her if you stick with the class. She goes over little details while your learning and is super nice.
She uses MyMathLab. Easy homework but you must study it. She posts reviews for practice before the test. Four exams and a comprehensive final. She will meet with you during office hours. Her grading is tough. On exams, you must show your work. She's flexible with test dates and will work with you.
Huge work load, don't take this professor unless you either already know the material or you have no other classes. First few tests are scheduled fine, and then you get an avalanche of math homework to do in the last 3 weeks of the semester.
The course I took was an online course. I will say that I worked very hard for this grade, but learned a great deal, and found in the end that she was a fair, but hard grader. This is not a class you can coast through. She is approachable, and will respond to emails.
Unfortunately she is not a very good professor. She is the worst one I have had during my 3 years at UVU. I would highly recommend that you take math from a different professor.
all you have to do is online homework monthly, 9-15 questions per section, total of 8 sections per month. No brain is needed since there is guideline to help, you have a month to do it! 4 exams and 1 final, all you need to do is study the exam review, no way you can't have decent grade. You complaint because you didnt put little effort, admit it.
Ya Li is a great professor and I hope I am able to take a class from her again! Her lectures are fast paced but she does a lot of examples which helped me learn a lot. Her tests are fair and the homework (though due for every section) isn't too much to handle. She helped me learn the subject very well and she can even be pretty funny!
Took this class online. There wasn't a lot of homework, however, it was really difficult because (unless mine were broken) the teacher did not have videos on how to do the problem/lessons in general. 90% of the time it was read the textbook and hope for the best. Of course, the program needed was expensive as well but it is Math.
Took her online course. Grade is all on the 4 tests she provides. No cushions (except she'll curve grade). No Extra Cred or Test Corrections. You can do well, but have to work hard.
Your grade is based on all 4 tests. HWs are easy. Exam Reviews somewhat prep you for the exams, and are similar to the tests, but make sure you know the content well. Test are only 13ish questions, and are open response (not multiple choice). Hard tests, and you can't afford to miss any because of how few questions. No extra cred or test correction
Don't ever take a class from this professor! Very unorganized and lazy. I took a math refresher course and followed all the requirements. The week after grades are due they reach out to see if I took the test. My score was lost and they are VERY UNORGANIZED AND CONFUSING. Never take a class with them!
Took her class as a live-stream, so maybe technology is just not her thing. I have never had a problem in a math class but I struggled. She never explains anything just does the problem and assumes you will catch on. Even when you ask questions she seems to glaze over concepts that need a deeper explanation. I had to teach myself everything....
I Had Ya Li online for Calc 1 and it was super hard. She doesn't explain anything and has the tests as most of your grade. The one thing that was good is that her test reviews were very similar to her tests.
Dr. Li doesn't really explain the concepts and most of your grade is dependent on the tests. When you have questions she doesn't explain anything and grazes over critical concepts. I spent the whole semester teaching myself.
Bad lectures. She just blows through the material quickly, with lots of derivations and proofs (which are irrelevant to learning the material and doing well on the tests). She writes very quickly and messily, and her notes are quite disorganized.
Dr Li clearly knows her stuff and is very knowledgeable, however she is easily one of the worst professors Ive had during my time at UVU. 90% of the grade is dependent on tests, of which are difficult and she is an extremely tough grader. Her notes are extremely disorganized and she is difficult to understand. I basically taught myself the class.
Class is very test heavy and all the notes on the test are hardly accessible. Then once you do get them they are so low resolution you can’t even read them. Also it’s so disorganized on the paper you can’t tell which notes go to which problems. All but 15% of your grade is on tests. Not worth it guys.
Professor Ya Li is very knowledgeable about math, however, talent isn't always translated to teaching. Her tests are difficult with a class average below a C. On top of this, her feedback and grading on tests are very difficult to understand. Half the time I didn't know what I was getting wrong and how I was able to improve.
Took this class online and only heard her voice for 20 minutes, and never understood a single word she said. Get ready to use examity and suffer from constant harassment from the proctors who I also couldn't understand. I thought I was learning math, not English. Honestly, the homework was meaningless and accounted for nearly 0% of the grade.
For an online class, everything was already posted by the textbook website, so it felt that there was no professor at all to teach me, it was hard to understand the subject and understand her, and seeing that the student was struggling and asking for help, extra credit was not even considered
Some people don't understand this online class was already created and she was asked to facilitate it the last minute. If you go to her office hours, she's amazing at breaking down complex subjects so a child can understand and she stays in her office outside of office hours to help students too. She's also helped me with Linear Algebra as well.
Extra credit if you attend class. You could learn from the book but it helped me to be in class. We got a 3x5 notecard on every test and she is clear about what material is going to be on the tests. I spent ~30-45 minutes on homework per class. Biggest criticism is that sometimes her answers to questions don't actually answer the question.
I have mixed feelings about Professor Li. She is very intelligent but not a great teacher... She moves very quickly during her lectures. If you feel confident about math previously she will probably be a fine professor for you. If you struggle already she probably isn't going to help you learn very well. Still a very nice person though.
She does tons of videos and textbook reading and then when you get to the homework there is a question not even gone over in anything she teaches. Im trying to do quadratic equations than she throws in velocity and m/s like she thinks we have done this when we haven't. So it makes homework harder as well as tests.
The class was pretty easy and I had enough resources. She is nearly impossible to get a hold of outside her occasional online tutor. Ive emailed her on multiple platforms multiple times and she did not get back to me. She only grades twice a semester after mid terms and after finals.
