Most of the work done in class is based off of readings that we are assigned as homework which she will go over very well. Once you reach the second half of the semester she will make you keep a journal full of 2 page papers that you have to write every week based off the readings. It can be a little overwhelming at times but what law class isn't?
She is a good professor. TOOO MUCH WORK THOOOOO for a 200 level at john jay.
Get ready to work. If you're looking for an easy A don't take this class. Although you will learn a lot, she doesn't have any Powerpoints so if you miss one thing she says you basically miss everything. She's a very smart woman but having her as a Professor isn't the most fun experience.
Feels like a level 400, I wouldn't recommend her. She is an extremely harsh grader. Make sure you participate. She gives way to much reading that is hard to digest most of the time. The midterm is hard AF so if you don't study you won't pass. After the midterm she makes you write a 2-page journal every week which gets overwhelming.
You rate teachers on their knowledge, effectiveness in imparting information and ability to engage students, not whether they give you easy As. Even though I won't get A in this class, I still think she's a good teacher. For college level class, the amount of readings and homework is about right. If u find them excessive, it's your problem not hers
It is a law class, so be expected to read a lot. The readings can be difficult to understand but she goes over it in class. One group presentation on one of the weeks readings. Weekly homework assignments. Journals replace the final for her class. Try to understand her lecture rather than just trying to copy down every word she saids.
Prof. Machtinger is absolutely prepared for what she teaches. There are lots of readings, but every piece of the syllabus she prepares is valuable for students understanding and critical thinking development. Midterm, after midterm weekly journals (2pg), presentation of a topic. Eye opening class.
professor machtinger is really awesome and really engaging and she really knows the subject well and I'm so glad I took her
She's a good professor, but her work is really hard and time-consuming. She's a harsh grader so go to her with any questions.
She's the best professor I've had at John Jay, she cares about her students and you learn a lot in her class. I took her for two consecutive semesters and would take her again if I could. LWS200-LWS225
She is the best prof I have ever had in my life. She cares a lot about her students and makes you work for your grades. Make sure to go to her if you have questions. She also gives a lot of reading but if you want to go to law school when you graduate then you had better be ready for lots of reading there too. She just wants her students to learn.
Best professor Ive had at John. If you have any questions, go to her she is always glad to help. I took her for both LWS 200& 225. I do not regret it one bit. The readings are hard, and she goes over them to help you understand. If you want to go to law school and think her class is hard. I advise you to consider another Profession.
As its a law class there is a lot of reading. She goes over each reading in class after you read it. She makes you work for your grade, she is a very caring professor and tried to make the class enjoyable and understanding. Graded by journals, presentation, large percent of grade is participation! Midterm and final are challenging.
Because of the virus I was not able to take her class in person for the full year but even with online learning it was my favorite class and just made my passion for law grow. Her class is an easy grade if you are willing to put in the time and actually take your education seriously.
Great professor and works with you. You need to work for your grade, it won't just be handed to you. Grade is based on a group presentation based on the readings for class, (RRR) which is a review sheet based on the readings you do weekly. She collects randomly. We have a midterm and a final and lastly a poetry slam competition.
Took her for LWS200/225 she really is an amazing professor who really wants you to learn and succeed. 1 group presentation (15%) Research Portfolio (65%) to submit at the end which includes mini assignments (5% each), two papers (20% each). Participation/RRR (20%) It seems like a lot but she helps you with every step. No midterm/final.
Professor Machtinger is straight forward. I had her for LWS 200 wish I took for her LWS 225 You earn your grade based on what you put in and that's what I love about her. She goes over every reading, so no worries if you don't understand everything. Make sure you take very good notes it helps for the midterm and final exam. Reading are interesting.
She great! If you do the assigned readings you should do well in the class. If you miss class more than 2/3 times you may fall behind. Lots of readings but lectures are very interesting and she makes the class fun. You may have a poetry slam I was not a huge fan of that part at first, but turned out pretty fun also :)
Incredibly dry academic reading, & lots of it. Even the interesting readings get the joy sucked out of them by RRRs that dont fit the context of the material. & that bad fit increases during the semester until it turns into annoying busy work. You must take LWS 200 before because she will refer to it constantly leaving you lost in the here & now
It would be a huge mistake on your part not to choose her class if you are a law major. Great professor and person. Ive never learned so much from one professor, and actually enjoyed it. Taking her again next year. Theres lots of reading but if you cant handle that change your major.
Professor Machtinger is one of the nicest professors I have ever taken. When you read her syllabus, you may think that she is going to be a strict professor, but she's actually really cool. You learn a lot in her class, and she makes the class interesting. I remember almost every single thing she has taught us. Make sure you participate.
It is a law class, so be expected to read a lot. This course is held to the same standard as an ivy league course. Professor Machtinger is very caring and wants the best for all her students. If you're going to take this course, she will keep you on your toes.
I love her and the class. Professor Machtinger is such a wonderful professor, I cannot stress this enough. I took this class during the summer and it was amazing, even though she did assign us a lot of readings. However, she does go through the readings with you and makes sure you understood the lesson. Grade is made up of RRR, midterm, and final.
Although I took this class in the 3 week summer session and it was not easy at all, professor Machtinger is amazing! There were a lot of readings that were difficult to understand but she lectured so well and found ways to make it easier. She is super sweet and caring and will help you with as much as she can. If you need this class take her!
She does not spare people. Pandemic? Problems at home? No, she does not care. People have circustances and this pandemic has made life extremely difficult for which she does not care. You can know the material extremely well, but she will still nitpick what you did wrong. Thanks to her my 3.6 gpa is now ruined.
She cares about her students, unlike many of the profs @ JJC and actually learned how to teach online for her students during the pandemic unlike so many others. You actually have to work (read, study and participate)- no coasting or excuses and then you'll great. Very easy and lots of support! Had her 2x, and I wish she'd teach the capstone!!
If you're looking forward to law school, this class will definitely prepare you for it. Get ready to read, as the materials are necessary for the essay-based midterm and final. There is one group presentation to present your assigned reading for that week. Last day of class, we had a poetry slam; everyone had fun. This class was taken in Fall 2020.
She cares so much for students. Really there for us. No prof more available, no prof clearer w/ expectations, no prof interested more in ur success. Her goal is to prep you for LWS & beyond. Taught me so much as a prof but also as a human. What all profs should be-kind, brilliant, tough, fair. Ppl who complain didn't show up & work. Best prof @JJ!
Professor Machtinger is truly a one of a kind professor. She is so sweet and helpful and truly just wants you to succeed. This does not mean that you dont have to work for your grade cause you absolutely do but she is there for you whenever you need her. Anyone that thinks she is difficult hasn't done what is necessary to be successful in her class
Professor Machtinger is great. If you have the opportunity to take her for LWS 200 I would do it. You are graded on participation, a presentation, a midterm, a course reflection final essay, and a small poem to share for the last class. It can be challenging, but if you put forth genuine effort you'll do great.
She gives a lot of information but the readings are often boring and confusing. There are a lot of assignments and she grades them really harshly with feedback that isn't that helpful. It's also kind of hard to talk to her because she's kinda rude.
Best professor @ John J. If you have any questions, go to her she is always glad to help. Tough, but fair and kind to students. Readings are hard but she clarifies everything. Had her for LWS 200& 225, learned a TON. If you want to go to law school hers are the only classes that will prep you. If you don't like her or her class, you won't hack it.
I do not know the professor people below had but this was not my experience with Professor Machtinger. She gives out an amount of work that is unnecessary in such a basic course. The RRR's are formulaic and boring to fill out. She can be vague with the assignment instructions, and if you missed something in class good luck.
Prof Machtinger is HORRIBLE !!!! I AM WARNING YOU NOW DO NOT DO IT. I don't ever leave reviews but I just had to this time. The workload isn't hard it's just annoying. VERYYYY TOUGHHHHHH GRADERRRRR , I can't stress this enough. Very condensing towards students , she always has to be right about everything. JUST DONT DO IT
Prof Machtinger is the BEST! She is SO understanding & cares for her students. She provides readings so no need to spend $$ on books. She replies to emails fast & grades fair using clear rubrics. Overall, do the work, & you'll get an easy A. She is a real gem. You will not regret taking her class. Only the slackers/ppl who wanna coast dislike her!
States she's preparing us for law school but this class did not help me whatsoever. She also claims lateness affects our grades but she comes to class late herself.
The class is excessively hard for absolutely no reason. The first half of the semester she gave lectures and actually explained the topics, after the midterm you're completely on your own. You need to attend every single class to understand anything. The grade is based on a mandatory presenting, midterm, final, some participation, and a poem.
Toughest graders youll ever encounter. Dont take this teacher even if you need it for credit. Choose another teacher or course
Professor Machtinger is not a bad teacher. I learned a lot from her lectures but she's a really tough grader. There are only 4 grades plus participation for this class. She can be rude and condescending. I would not recommend taking this class, it was unnecessarily hard and I did not have enough assignments to pull up my grade.
Dr. Machtinger is a good professor, but a tough grader. However, if you plan to major in LWS I recommend you taking her course. She gives out lengthy readings and requires weekly journals, but it's super useful for finals. If you plan on attending law school after, it's best to develop the skillsets and habits and she does a good job of doing that.
Just don't do it. Dr. Machtinger assigns an unnecessary amount of work for an introductory course. She gives you a midterm literally three weeks into the semester. She is a tough grader and gives little feedback. She gives weekly writing assignments, one presentation, 5% assignments, and a final paper. She also marks every time you participate.
Multiple articles each week, one RRR every week. I don't know how I pulled through and got a B-, but somehow I did. She was rude to most students, and was not really willing to help. She probably won't answer your questions, she expects you to have a masters in Law basically. I cannot learn the way that she lectures, and shes a very tough grader.
I would not recommend taking her unless there is no other options, she has a terrible attitude and would always show up late to class. She is not motivating at all, I do not think she should be teaching low level courses. She gave weekly assignments plus midterm, final, a project and then a poetry reading. I dreaded coming to her class.
If I could give this professor a worse rating than a 1, it would be at least a -10,00000. She is absolutely terrible. She was my first class in the morning and never in my life have I ever wanted to not wake up due to how dreadful her lectures were.
I never had a prof who CARES SO MUCH about their students! You actually have to work (read, study and participate which I guess some of these ppl didnt do (ha!), but if you don't slack like some of these ppl, you'll dogreat. Very easy if you take it seriously and LOTS OF SUPPORT from Prof! Had her 2x. Shes amazing.
She is the best professor I have ever taken in John Jay. I took her for an online course but had a feeling of personally knowing her. There are weekly online lectures that are very interesting and assignments that are relatively easy and she's always there to clarify. She is a very helpful and caring person, take her you wont regret it.
Honestly, I don't understand why others had such good things to say about this professor. The only good thing is that she will provide you with readings for free. She was pretty rude and hard to reach outside of class (she doesn't use her jjay email). She's a tough grader and doesn't do any extra credit. Please don't waste your time with her.
If you want to go to law school her class definitely prepares you with critical thinking skills and the amount of reading to prepare for. People give her a bad rating saying she's a strict grader but in reality she doesn't give out A's just for trying, you'll get an A based on quality of your work. PAY ATTENTION TO LECTURES TO PASS! Super caring!!!
The Professor is very nice and caring. As long as you complete your work on time and read whatever was assigned for the week, you will be fine. There is one RRR which is basically a summary of what you read for that week once every week. There is a group project which is pretty basic. Overall, I recommend this professor as long as you plan to work.
Way too much work for an intro class and too much of the grade depends on participation. Be ready to share a poem, a presentation, weekly journals, and exams. It's not a fun class, mostly annoying.
Professor Machtinger made the expectations clear on day one---show up, do the readings, participate. The work built into the course is essential to understanding the material and passing the midterm and final. If you don't like being asked to read or think critically, this course is not for you. Surprise, you actually have to earn the A.
This is the most confusing professor you will ever get; If you want to see your GPA drop, take her. But beware with the lack of guidelines and the most confusing grading criteria ever. This will be the most frustrating class ever. It's not even the difficulty of it. It's just the most disorganized grading criteria that you will get.
I've heard she's a tough grader but I don't see it I've gotten an A on every assignment so far and I'm not even a LWS major. She's clear from the jump about what she expects from her students. Weekly reading assignments like 80 pages a week. I don't get why people complain... it's a law class lol. Gotta attend and participate. She's really sweet!
She's a good teacher, definitely cares if show that you are engaged and trying. But be warned, she's a stickler for attendance and for participation. Make sure to participate during class and this is definitely not a class you can slack in. Not a hard class, if you do the work and read the readings she assigned, you'll be fine.
This professor is a very tough grader. She does not care if you tried or not, if it's not what she wants to see she will disregard it. She is very strict when it comes to participation and attendance. Lots of boring readings doesn't use slides and midterm, final and a poem/ rap in the end. If you care ab your GPA save yourself and dont take her!!
I might understand the low rating...but she's actually not a bad professor nor are her clases difficult. If you are the type to be dedicated then you don't have to worry! Just read weekly and do the RRR's. Her tests are a bit heavy but if you have been paying attention then you don't have to worry! In overall, I liked her and her class!
Kinda rude and pretentious lowkey, but easy class. If you participate a lil bit and submit all your assignments on time, you'll be fine. RRRs weekly (just summaries of the readings), one group presentation, timed essay midterm and final, and a poetry slam. Idk what everyone else is saying, the workload was reasonable, its a law class. Just boring.
Took this class as an elective. Weekly reading assignments, a midterm, and a 10 page research proposal as a final. She is nice but she's a tough grader. I really liked her and really tried my BEST in her class but still got a B. Understand you'll probably get a B, only like 1-2 kids in the class will get an A.
The negative comments about this teacher are from those that don't read honestly. She an amazing and knowledgeable proffessor that wants what's best for her students. Do the readings, do ur rrr and pass quiz you won't fail she doesn't make it hard. Plus ur online. I got a b-
she was okay but sometimes had troubles with the readings that she had put on the syllabus but she was organized with the syllabus but she is a tough grader but the feedback she gives you it will help you out and also do the project the midterm and the final they are all based on what you learned through the semester and she is kind and funny
Im a fulltime student, worker and its my last semester. She was acting like her course is a 400 course. She told the class doesn't care about much work and reading you have for her class she is not here to make their life easier. Totally unrealistic of the reality of NEW YORK life.
do not take this class if you cant read 20+pg and hate writing reports.her readings can be interesting but a tad confusing and she wont give you a straight forward answer if ur confused.she got mad at the class for having a gc once idk why bc all my prof encourage it.she does want students to success but she can be very tough.youll learn alot tho
There is an RRR due every week, one midterm, one presentation, one final, and a poetry slam ( at the end of the semester). She is an extremely tough grader so be careful! You need to take notes of the concepts or else you will not pass.
it's a lot of work. but she's easily accessible. Very clear about what she expects. her LWS 225 Really prepares you for capstone, which is the whole point of the class. only wouldn't take again bc of work load.
Prof Machtiger was not my favorite but I learned a lot from her! just do the weekly RRRs + participate here + there, you will be fine. Take notes, write every single word if you can. it will be very helpful for midterm/final exams. poetry slam is final assignment! have to complete a presentation/video too. she is not hard, it is just a lot of work.
Loved the content of the class but it was tough + there is a lot of reading + writing involved. but overall not a bad class if you just put your all into it. weekly RRR'S, 5/6 5% assignments, a presentation, and final paper. should participate sporadically, if not every week because that is its own grade. she is great + v accessible for questions!
An RRR every week. One presentation for the semester. A couple of homework assignments. The midterm and the final and poetry slam that's mandatory. Weird and a harsh grader. The RRRs don't count towards your grade, but you have to do them reading the readings isn't enough. However, she is excellent at answering questions and explaining well.
Dr. M is amazing-great prof and person. Was going through tough stuff & she was so understanding & helped me achieve my best. Lots of reading but I grew so much as a student & person because of her classes. Wish she taught more.
She sets the bar high for us students which makes me feel respected by her bc she doesn't dumb things down like other profs. She expects us to do the work but really prepares us for what's coming next- 4th yr/grad school & I actually feel ready. No easy As but you will be a better student thanks to her. Shes also always available to help.
Dr. M is so much clearer then any prof I've ever had. She gives feedback on EVERYTHING. all rubrics are posted. She uses Blackboard so ppl who have trouble, saying there's no feedback, they just don't use BB properly. It's all right on there because prof is so organized. Wish she taught capstone. Don't know my grade yet but wanna take more w/ Dr. M
Professor Machtinger is very passionate about what she does, but there are points where she can come off as passive-aggressive. She is a critical grader and wants work that aligns with her standards to a T. Otherwise, your grade will suffer. While the workload isn't terribly heavy, you are forced to commit yourself to quite a lot in her class.
I'm so much more prepared. There's lots of reading, she has high standards but she helps us reach them instead of dumbing things down. Do the work and you'll feel smart and ready for anything. She just wants us to learn. is happy to help but won't back down on her standards bc she know what we need to know to succeed later. wish she taught more @JJ
Did better then I thought. Prof. M is so organized it really helped me keep track. She is very clear about expecations and is around to help you reach them. Not like those profs who ghost and don't answer questions or emails.
Semester just started but can already tell prof is cool. She just wants us to learn, not an easy A like other LWS classes but will actually prep us for law school. If you actually care about learning something, take prof M. She cool and stays to answer qs after class
Research methods is not an easy course, but Professor Machtinger made this course so doable because all the assignments culminated to a final paper, so even before the end of the course, the research proposal was done. She is truly caring and amazing. Hands down the best professor at John Jay.
This class enriched my knowledge of law and sociology tremendously. I have learned so much from the lectures and I enjoyed all the courses materials. In my opinion, one of the best professors I had in John Jay.
The class was engaging & accessible, despite the virtual setting. I appreciated her approach of avoiding sensitive political topics bc it created a safe, inclusive environment for everyone. The class affirmed my interest in law & society, and I'm grateful for a positive experience. It was fun and affirmed Law & Society is the right major for me!
this is my first year at John Jay and I am a transfer student. I can say my first semester went really well and LWS challenged me in many ways but it wasn't impossible! and now I view the world through a different lense. Overall, class was great.
This prof was so good and really helped me do my best. Sad she isn't teaching 225 research methods in the fall. She makes things easy to understand and is available to go over things if you don't get them. Wish more profs would be like her. Always answered emails too
Great prof. Too bad that she doesn't teach other courses. wanted to take her again. She is so clear in her guidelines and expectations
Am loving Dr. M! So far she is one of the best profs I'm taking at JJ, learning so much. This is not a bird course but I know Ill leave learning a toonnnn.
Really good prof. Learning more than other classes. Working hard but it's worth it. already take her for 225 next term.
Just at the start of semester but already know this is the most organized prof i ever had and she is super kind. excited for the semester and that i am taking her for both lws classes
Her class will challenge you but she is honestly a very good professor. She is familiar with the material and very organized. No papers but we had a presentation, poetry slam and two dense weekly readings alongs with a mandatory summary of the reading. My biggest issue is that she is very strict on participation. Very informative class.
This prof is so clear and organized about her expectations and treats us like real people, preparing us for actual grad school, not like other profs treat us like kids, not like real life with redos and no consequences. Its not an easy A, but you will learn so, so much. Dont know grade yet, but I know im growing.
Dr. M is so awesome. She sets high standards and students grow and learn so much. She is tough but fair and I just wish she taught more courses in LWS. Super organized, super patient and responsive. had most challenging and rewarding semester
Great prof. learned a toooonn. recommended!
She's extremely good natured and as long as you do the work, which isn't even that much, you will have a good grade. She's a wonderful intelligent and caring prof i would highly recommend her class. The negative reviews are only if you weren't trying!
Dr. M is a great professor with high standards. Pretty easy to do well, just follow the extremely clear guidelines/ syllabus/rubrics or ask her qs. Not an easy A, but not a hard one either.
