SHE IS JUST LIKE A HIGHSCHOOL TEACHER.
she sucks. and gives all kind of busy work
Ms. Burns is probably the worst teacher at TCC. Never take her!!! She will fail you. Her tests are over 9 chapters at a time and she doesn't teach the class! Shes terrible! She doesn't give you full credit on any of your work. Your better off reading the whole book yourself to pass!
lets start by saying she graduated from FAMU, and is the worst teacher I have ever had, she doesnt know how to teach, and lectures all class, half the time the info isnt correct, and gives the hardest tests i have had in college.

Enjoyable class! She reminds me of a challening highschool teacher. After the first test I made a low B and expected higher, but she gave us a chance to redeem ourselves with a take home test and an extra credit assignment. If you study, like with any other teacher, a B or A will be easy. She makes class interesting and she'll give you A+ notes.
This teacher is very understanding, yet challenging. Classes are not repetitive and are fun and she makes the information easier to grasp. She gives assignments to help you understand the material, so your grade is not soley dependent on test scores.Take her course and you'll never look at history the same way again. Remember: history is a clock!
She is a great teacher. Her style is not conventional but she gets things done. Very interesting class lectures and lots of different ideas to ponder on. highly recommended if you don't mind work and a little challenge. You will learn a lot from this class with Ms. Burns. Thank you Ms. Burns
By far the worst professor, i would not advise anyone to take her. Her teaching skills are poor and shes terrible!

She is decent. The class is an easy B, but it was very challenging to get an A. She keeps class interesting by switching it up from class to class. Her notes are great, and her tests are rather easy if you study. It's a challenging class, but I think she will become a better teach as time goes by. Give her a few semester and she'll be awesome.
This teacher has to be by far the worst teacher I have had. She makes as if the whole country is a big conspiracy against minorities. She has no idea what she is talking about in most cases, and she always gets her stuff mixed up. I don't find her to be helpful at all.
HORRIBLE.. yes the class is easy but all she talks about is racism. when she lectures it is so hard because she is uncapeable of using a computer and cant print out lecture notes so the whole time you are writing and not able to listen. A very pointless class because I already know about racism and have my own opinions on it.

Ms. Burns is a really good professor. She is very helpful; she wants her students to pass. She speaks her mind daily, so BEAWARE of some of the things that might come out of her mouth. If you pay attention and do your work passing her class will be a breeze!
She gives a good lecture, but her test is extemely hard. No one pass her test, she also gives you these dificult article assigments to do. Also she require you to write a paper, and the first draft has to be six pages.
If you are a student that doesn't like to read don't take her. She's a very good teacher, funny, outgoing. If you are sensative towards race don't take her. She tells you the things that noone else has. I've learned a lot frpm her and would take her any time.

THIS LADY IS DAMN GOOD AT WHAT SHE DO. THERE IS NO WAY YOU CAN FAIL THIS COURSE. IF YOU ARE LAZY AND DONT LIKE COMING TO CLASS, ITS IMPOSSIBLE. SHE GIVES YOU A LOT OF CHANCES FOR EXTRA CREDIT. SHE IS A VERY SWEET LADY AND SHE DONT PLAY. SHE MAKES THE CLASS REALLY FUN. LECTURES ARE EXTREMELY INTERESTING. YOU WILL BE LOOKIN FOR HER THE NEXT SEMESTER!
Miss Burns is the worst professor I've had at TCC. She publicly humiliates students by trying to make them teach the class. She also enjoys putting down other peoples beliefs telling them that they are wrong. When she doesn't feel like teaching, she makes everyone do book work.
She starts the semester telling you the book lies, then proceeds to teach directly from it. She also requires a term paper but gives no guidance until 2 weeks before the 1st draft is due. Very unapproachable and her "teaching" style is nonexistant.
Ms. Burns is the best! She is straightfoward, tells you from day one what is required, all you have to do is read your syllabus. She makes history fun and learnable, she def gives a different perspective of history, read, follow your syllabus, and turn in your work you'll do great. Oh and be open to be discriminated against equally,
O.K. lets be real, most who don't like her are overprotected cry babies who are afraid to think outside of "his" story. Ms. Burns tells it like it is and makes no apologies. Her syllabus tells you everything you need to know. Yea she will embarass you, but its all good natured, stop crying all you sheltered pansies!

Great teacher! She lets you know exactly what she expects. The tests do cover a lot of material, so use the study guide and take good notes in class. The journal assignments are easy if you follow the outline that she gives. She will help you to help yourself, but if you do not come to class and participate she will not waste her time on you.
this teacher is NUTS..but in a good way... funniest teacher/person ive ever heard she cant make me stop laughing.. lets you know what is on the tests...BUT if your close-minded or a turbo christian dont take this class.. the truth is out there...
Holy smokes.. you guys should have been in class on Friday! She was going off on how to make a slave.. man her class keeps getting better and better each day. Hey Yakita.. How about demoralizing the democrats, just because you think Bush is nuts doesn't mean you cant stick up for the republicans!

Ms. Burns taught me things that I will never forget. She is the best history professor, not afraid to speak her mind or go outside the boring textbook. If you want a great challange, take her, you'll love it!
She's keeps you on your toes. Do all the extra credit, it will save your life, it'll allow you one or two slip ups in the class.She's a really really good teacher. Just do the work. You'll learn more than you ever thought you would.
She's a great person. But her class is far too difficult. I learned a lot, but her test are impossible. She knows you're going to fail before you even start.
class was way too difficult for a history class. she gave more writing assignments than required by the gordan rule. She does'nt show interest in helping people. You go to her to help and she start to complain. Its not good for a teacher to show her own bias with subjects.

This is the most powerful teacher at TCC! She lectures very well, has a bomb collection of pictures, and knows her stuff! Stop judging her personality and pay attention to the things that matter!
mrs burns is a great teacher who has a great sense of humor. i still dont know how i passed but i ended up with a C. test are hard but almost 25 % of the grade is made up of extra credit. great teacher ;)
this lady is so cool! i didn't like her at first because i thought she was rude, but she just tells you like it is. and shes not afraid to tell you her opinon, but at the same time she always respects everyone elses. she also was so funny!!! she was the center of lots of conversations with my friends because her stories were so good! take her!!!!

DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER! She has the mantality that Hisotry should come naturally to everyone and that it is the easiest subject. For me, it isn't. A typical class would be 4-6 pages of notes, handwritten, front and back. She talks the entire time and has slides jumbled with information that takes longer than she allows to write them. Bad Teac
I can tell by what that student just said about Mrs. Burns he failed this course. I think she is a commited instructor, cause i was in this class! So if you didn't think the course was easy, you put forth no effort or you are just DUMB
I was also in that class and I have to agree with the other student. It took a lot of study time to get a passing grade from this teacher. If you are looking for someone easy, do not take Burns.
She does not teach. She gives you a "study guide" and you take a test. She expects you to read everything on your own, which defeats the purpose of taking a class.

Not impressed at all. So much info on Africa, that by the 2nd week, I thought I was in the wrong class room. Not sure that I will take another class that she is teaching. Lots of rhetoric, not much substance.

Yakita Burns is a pretty good teacher.. she uses the textbook for a journal each chapter which is easy and boost your grade. She is **** although and thinks the white race will be extinct soon... but other than that she means well. shes black
She is not a very good teacher at all! She gives you work and acts like she is the only person you have to do work for. She gave us 8 essays to do over SPRING BREAK! SO NOT CALLED FOR! She is real and funny, but that's not what I pay tuition for. Sorry! Don't take her unless she is your only professor.

Burns is alright she is not easy but what is the point if you don't wanna be challenged? We had 2 writing essays and plenty of extra credit and we was given everything on tests so if you flunked or hatein on Burns blame yourself!
Not an easy teacher. Make sure you do the readings and participate in class or else she won't give a study guide. Knows her stuff, but flies through the lectures. A few chapters a test she doesn't cover, your on your own. Responds to e-mails quickly. 3 tests, 1 essay and final make up your grade

If you earned an A you got one. You all know that she gave us many chances to pass. Just think of all of the extra credit most of us (including myself) did not do, or your paper. She offered plenty of help and study sessions, but most of us did not show up (including me. So in my opinion she gave you exactly what you earned! Suck it up!
FIrst and foremost, DR.Burns has been one of the most reasonable and outstanding professors i've ever had. She gave my class everything we needed to pass her class. She had a great method of teaching the information and I really enjoyed her "realness"!
I am really bad at history and if it weren't because of her writing assignments i wouldn't have passed. Her realness is respectable but i wouldn't take her again. She requires you to stay in class til the end and she doesnt cover chapters she finds boring. Which to me is not helpful at all.
She requires a lot from her students. Her passion for the subject can be overwhelming because she never pulls you in but expects you to love history. Things that matter to her, be expected to hear about in abundance. Plus, be prepared to take tests that cover multiple chapters at a time. She isn't horrible, but I wouldn't recommend taking her.
I would NOT reccommend her as a teacher. She loves what she does but there are only a couple grades so if you mess something up then there isnt much to bring your grade back up. She skips a lot of chapters that you WILL be tested on and said she "WILL NOT" repeat herself. She is VERY biased so be prepared. Run while you can, and if not good luck!

She is a good teacher and her study guides are basically all the questions on the test. The issue I had was the large amount of content per test. I'd recommend her if you have no problems doing a lot of studying. Cramming wont do in this class.
Horrible Horrible. Very unfair, biased, towards students. Does not try to help th students pass. Only teaches what the book offers. Horrible Review notes, does not repeat anything, hard to understand her accent which makes things more difficult. 2 thumbs down below.
If you don't want to learn and u want an easy class, TAKE SOMEONE ELSE! I personally loved this class. You HAVE to study if you want to pass. But she's very fair. I failed the first test (got a 40) and still got an A in the class. Very passionate about what she teaches. Very sarcastic sense of humor. By far the best class I've ever taken.
She's great! I have her now and she is very helpful and clear in what she wants. You MUST study for this class, but other than the difficulty level she is my favorite teacher so far :)
If you really want to learn history w/o all the extra opinions DO NOT TAKE HER. She gives about 4 current event articles, 3 in class essays, and every exam you will have about 5 paragraph response questions. If this was a ENC class I would not mind. She is very unclear on what will be on the test and doesnt grade work in a timely fashion.
She disses her students and is not encouraging at all. She goes through her lectures really fast, so I suggest you being a laptop to type notes. If you want to pass the test, complete the study guide. Takes forever to grade.

She is not very easy BUT she's an excellent teacher who is passionate about what she teaches. You must pay attention in her class to pass. Also STUDY the study guides its almost verbatim of what she gives so be sure to TAKE NOTES preferably on a laptop because she goes fast. DO NOT show up to her class late either.
She always expects the least out of students..and she makes that clear. As long as you do all of her assignments and do well on your tests, you'll pass. She's somewhat of a harsh grader, though. She never uses Blackboard. Stay organized, go to class (or make a friend in the class so they can give you notes if you miss a day). She an OKAY teacher.
Doesn't teach. She reads from her P.Point then bombards you with a test covering 3 chapters. Only grades tests, chapter summaries and 2 current event articles. If you get 1 bad grade on an article or get a few bad grades on the summaries,your screwed. Don't take this class. You Must read the book and basically teach yourself.

Worst teacher. Do not take her our final covered 1870-present. That's over 100 years of information to try and retain with NO STUDY GUIDE. Tests are hard she will cover 3 out of 10 chapters that are on the test and tells you to teach yourself the rest. The only subject she goes in depth on is black history. Very rude and doesn't care about students
I do not recommend her. we hear a lot of her opinions and not what the text book says. Im 2 days from taking my final and i have no idea what my grade is. does give quite a bit of extra credit. Takes weeks to grade everything. on a good note, she knows her stuff. 4 exams, 1 is take home. Study guides are very helpful.
Really mean professor. She does not believe in her students. Never met a person like her, I thought that teachers enjoyed teaching but it seems like she hates her job. I feel sorry for anybody that has to take her class. Stay away from her.
She does a good job at helping students pass her class, but sometimes it is tough if you don't read the book. She will help out by giving some quizzes online and the IRQ's aren't very hard. If you put some effort in, you'll pass.

This teacher is just awful. She doesn't go over the material in the book and expects you to teach yourself half of the book! Thank god we have quizes and not tests otherwise I would of already withdrawn. I have no idea what my grade is. She doesnt post anything on blackboard. Her opinion about slavery is about the only thing you will learn.
If you want to sit in class all semester long with a race(ist), rude and opinionated person, sure take her class. If you're late to class, she won't let you in the door. She makes snobby comments to students, extremely childish. Very tough grading wise. Also, never state your opinion on anything, she will hold it against you and your grade. AVOID!
They honestly should rename this class 'Black History Month' because that's the only thing she cares about. Puts her opinion too much into lectures and frequently picks on or 'calls out' students. Won't let you into class if you're late and won't tell you your grade all semester. Very difficult material with no help from her. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!

If you picked this professor then withdraw immediately!! The class was 2 hours and 50 mins long and she lectured the WHOLE time. So boring and she was kinda rude. Don't take this professor.
Yakita Burns has been one of the worst teachers I've ever had to endure. About half of the class dropped, I wish I did too but sadly I didn't. Her lectures have absolutely nothing to do with the tests and you do half of the book yourself (literally). She doesn't put in grades until after the semester is over and her grading criteria is very vague.

You could work for six hours on a homework assignment for this class and get a 30% on it.
You are going to want to drop the course at first.... DO NOT. I promise if you can make it through the first month she makes the class more easy and doable. If you work with her she will work with you. She truly is kind but makes you work for the grade. Started with a D and now have an A in the class. It's going to seem impossible but its not.

Do not come to class even 5 minutes late or she WILL tell you to leave and come back later that week on time. She's very disorganized and is very concerned with pushing her agenda on race.

Worst teacher ever, assigns 50 plus pages to read each week and quizzes you on them two days after they are assigned. She assigns multiple papers a week on top of the readings and quizzes. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. SHE IS A TERRIBLE TEACHER AND YOU WILL FAIL.
Even if you have to take an 8am to avoid having her as a professor, do it. The workload is insane and the questions on her tests and quizzes do not align with the book or with her lectures. She said that we could use the 11th edition textbook but it ended up screwing me over multiple times. Avoid her class at any cost.
If you take this professor be prepare to write between 5 and 7 essays with 2 days notice. Sometimes multiple times a week. We wrote nearly 50 essays (not an exaggeration). The tests are mostly in groups though, which does make them easier, but for the love of God that was too many essays with not nearly enough time. Very vague on grading as well.
Professor Burns was amazing from start to finish. She does NOT want you to fail! As long as you show up and do the work, you will pass. She is going to treat you like an adult. There are a lot of essays, but she gives clear feedback on what she is looking for. They do get easier. DO NOT DROP THE CLASS. Talk to her if you need to, she doesn't bite.
I'm a few years late on this, but I recognized the name. Cool person, awful teacher. The class itself isn't hard, but the workload shoveled on to you is bonkers. Multiple essays in the same week, sometimes due in two days of being assigned. She's not very considerate of students and their other courses and can be aggressive.

She does grade hard, but once you know exactly what she's looking for, it's easy to get a good grade. Offers extra credit. Favorite professor at TSC so far!
I would not recommend taking this teacher's class. She doesn't teach and often talks about inappropriate matters and is way too political. She comes off as a mean person and can be intimidating. Wish I would've read reviews before hand because they all seem to line up
Her lectures often times went off topic and got very political. Attendance started off as mandatory but kinda stopped. A lot of essays assigned within short notice, which are graded harshly but once you know what she is looking for, your grade will improve as I started aceing them. She allowed for quizzes to be done with a group, which was nice.
Professor Burns is tough but fair. Lots of essays and reading, but she provides helpful feedback. Stick with it and use tools like unstuck ai for study prep - it really helped me manage the workload. Not an easy class, but worth it if you put in the effort.
very strict teacher and a tough grader. She will say she will teach your certain lectures but will leave you with them and tell you she never has said she'd teach it. She never puts in grades and puts them in wrong sometimes. don't take this class if you're skipping a lot or need to be taught. she expresses her beliefs and has a great stance.
Be prepared to fight for civil rights as you enter Yakita's BLM protest held 3x a week. All content is framed in some way of race or sex, it is almost unbearable. Don't even bother reading the textbook, she chooses her own content to put on tests, and you will most likely start the class with a class avg. of a 30%. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!!

Professor Burns is really cool. Her lectures are understandable, but sometimes I feel like the quizzes have nothing to do with the lectures. The only way that I've gotten through this class is because of prayer and teamwork. This is the class that you need to build a bond with your class!
