Assigns a lot of homework, gives reviews right before the test which are EXACTLY like the tests, sometimes the same questions. Other students are very rude and disrespectful because she has an accent, but if you actually TRY to listen, she's understandabl

First of all, her accent isn't that bad, but it can be pretty funny sometimes. It seems like sometimes the class is telling her how to solve a problem because she is always confused when she writes an example. Do the homework, study, you'll be fine.

Assigns fair amount of Homework. Slight accent, but you can get used to it in few days. She puts a few trick problems in test, so you either know it or you don't. Very willing to answer questions you may have. Even if your not savvy with math, she notices your effort and considers it in grading.
can't speak english, like the majority of the math department. failed her class, went through self taught and got an A. does this mean I could teach math at palomar? quite possible with the quality of their dept. stay away from this one, people!
Yan is a nice lady, but a difficult instructer. The HW is okay but the test are HARD! She moves very fast in her lectures and when you ask for extra examples she simply says "WE DON'T HAVE TIME...SEE ME DURING OFFICE HOURS". I don't recommend her...unless you have PLENTY of time to study and review.
She' a great teacher. Takes about a week to get used to the accent but after that she's quite clear in her teachings. She assign alot of homework and has quite difficult projects but it helps you out greatly in your next levelmath classes. Grades test very hard but if you pay attention to signs its okay. Go to class and do homwwork, and youll pass.
She has no patience and can be very rude at times. I took her class and passed with a C even though I studied like crazy. Find a teacher who can help you not put you down for not understanding. We all learn at different rates but she doesn't understand that concept. I'd never take her again.

An exacto knife with legs. When you must explain a concept, like on a T/F question, you had best be sure to write down her every word and be able to repeat it verbatim, or else. Forget what the book has to say, and for Gods sake, NEVER MISS CLASS!!
Her class is hard. She is hard to understand....but, her test are from the reviews that she does. Some are exact. Homework needs to be done. She is willing to help and loves to see students trying hard!
I think she's a nice person in general, but she's a really tough teacher. It takes a couple of weeks until you can understand her accent. She encourages questions but either doesn't understand what you're asking or seems appaled you don't grasp the concept, then usually gives a round-about answer that makes you more confused. Tough class.
Im not a mean or rude person at all but this was the worst teacher I've ever had. She rushed through her lessons, got angry when we had questions, and if you missed one problem on hw, she wouldn't give you credit for the whole thing. Many times, it didnt even seem like she knew the information she was teaching to us. I don't recommend her at all!
Professor Tian is a nice lady but a very hard teacher, you have to really work hard and the class is hard to pass. GOOD LUCK...and I agree with the other remarks.
She is honestly, a really horrible teacher. She doesn't seem to care about her students and does not answer questions because only stupid people ask questions. She expects everyone to understand trigonometry already and treats everyone who wants to learn the subject like they are completely inadequate. She is incredibly rude and very mean.
This teacher is the worst. She is mean, impatient, and makes mistakes herself while she lectures. Avoid her if you can. I wish that I had, and I even got an A in the class.
teaching me math is no easy task, but she didnt make it any easier. while i didnt fund her as rude or mean as some people, she can be very hard to understand(accent) and doesnt always seem interested in answering questions. other pointed out her making mistakes in her lectures, and i found that to happen often as well.
Writes to fast on whiteboard, then goes back erases homework information and all formulas and concepts and starts writing again. If you missed writing down the homework, she blames you after she erased everything. Doesn't give enough time on tests, doesn't allow make-up tests. "I'm sorry, you're too slow, I have no more time!"
She is very rude and does not help at all. She does not answer questions and looks down upon you if you do.
she is an awesome teacher! I hate math and she really helped me. She makes problems easier by getting rid of fractions and stuff. She also really cares about her students she brought us cookies, and even offered a few re-tests, she comes off kind of harsh but give her a chance.
holly hell do all that you can to not take her. almost one test per week. she blows through sections like nobodies business and its hard to follow so much info. repeats book examples for lecture, thats it.
I took Math106 over the summer and this class moved super fast. There was a test every week. You have to have prior knowledge of geometry to do well in her class. I'm usually very good at math and she made this class pretty difficult for me. She gives LOTS of hw and every day the in class assignment were really hard to complete. I got a B still
Very rude and impatient with students, especially when we ask questions. Doesn't understand that the reason we need a teacher is to get clarification on the subjects, otherwise, all we need is the book.

Easily the worst teacher I've ever had, she's always singling students out and making them feel bad. She goes through her lectures way too fast and gives tests way too often. There is a hearing impaired student in my class and she always singles her out by saying things like, "if our deaf student can do this problem then why can't you?". SHE SUCKS
Ha, I was in the same class where she singled out the deaf girl. She singled out others and made them feel like crap, too. Not only is she a bad teacher, I just don't like her as a person... at all.
Prof. Tian plays favorites and only those people do well in the class/will she help. The other students (even after asking for help) are chastized and treated like they are stupid. She is a hard teacher to learn from (besides her rudeness) because she goes through the material very fast and gives a lot of hw without going overi the answers.
Proff. Tian is a strict teacher and leaves tons of HW. If you are a slacker this is not the class for you. If you want to learn and do not mind doing the tons of HW than this is your type of teacher. She is not a mean lady, she does not have patience for slackers who think they can cruise through her class.
Hardiest prof. I've every had by far. I would advise not to take her unless your math skill level is up.
Failed in every category. A very strict and difficult professor to work with. Gives extra credit to students who doesn't need them, don't make the same mistake I did, you won't make it in this class.
Do not take this class if you are looking for an easy ride. If you want to move on then take this class. YOu will have all the skills to move on. Be ready to do your homework. If you work hard and are respectful she will work with you A LOT. Sometimes has a little bit of a hard time explaining, but I am the worst at Math and got a B.

very bad professor. shes the hardest teacher you can take. she speaks way too fast. might as well learn everything from the book. but she has miniquizzes at the beginning of classes and she has inclass assignments every day at the end of class. i thought i was really good with math but her grading is extemely strict.
Ugh, this woman is horrible. She's SUPER strict about anything- she takes points off for not writing the math problems out the way SHE wants it to be written, even if you still get the right answer. She always asks "Are you with me?" but rarely clarifies anything in her lectures. TONS of homework.
ok, so after reading all of these comments about Professor Tian, I was really having second thoughts about taking math 100 with her, but as it has turned out she isnt as bad as everyone has said. She knows her material well, the only flaw is her accent, but it is really easy to get used to. I am not the best at math, but ended up gettin a B.
at first I thought everything was good. Until she started getting into the more complicated stuff. She goes through 2 sections a class, expecting you to completely remember everything she taught. she doesn't go over about 1/5th of the material, so you're on your own. i am in the math lab excessivly because of her, asking dumb questions.
sometimes she teaches everything she SHOULD. other times she doesnt teach anything relevant, but there's still hw to do on it. i'm constantly confused in her class, because everything is her way. doesn't matter if it's right, if it isn't her way, you're wrong. This techer gives quizes almost every time u attend. So u I reccommend to study ur homework everynight..its many points...also be there every class take notes.do not talk in class! she believes disrespectful. also hard test short time. but good teacher.just that her accent can be a bit hart to understand.!
HORRIBLE!!!I dont know why she is a teacher, she expects you to already know the material and if you dont understand she treats you like a moron!!AVOID IF POSSIBLE,I wish I would have.I Worked my butt off and still managed to get an F (I think she just didnt like me) but I saved my tests and I will be appealing the grade.
If you are not willing to work your butt off, this class is not for you. She is nice so it is hard to hate her but she assigns about 3 hours of homework a night. So this class does not work with a busy schedule. The fact is she expects a lot. I like the class but on tests 20 percent gets taken off it is not the way she would do it... VERTICAl. =]
Prof. Tian is a phenomenal and hardworking instructor. She presents a very rigorous and challenging course. If you are not prepared to put effort into it, you will find it increasingly difficult to understand. However, if you are willing to commit your time, you will walk away with much more than a basic knowlege on the subject.
I just completed the summer Trig course. My deal is that I need a B or better to take Calc at Cal Poly. I really appreciated Ms. Tian, she is so smart w/ math & shows u all the short cuts. If u r not willing 2 study & pay attention, you will not do good. Yes she has an acsent but shes very easy to understand. I'd take her again for any Math class!
She is a terrible teacher. She follows the book way to close. If you dont do it her way its wrong in her eyes. She has these stupid quizes that she does every day. Wouldn't recomend for anyone
What really made me mad was her grading style. If you get the answer right she deducts points if its not up to her standards. Thats not right at all nor is it fair in any sense of the word
Tian is amazing. She does examples of every type of problem you will have & is crystal clear about what will be on tests. She comes off mean at first, but that is only to scare away the ppl who don't care enough to stay. Listen in class, follow her format(*useful & Important), & do homework(which is good % of grade)& it will be worth while.
Anyone who says Mrs. Tian isn't awesome is an idiot. She may seem scary at first, but she is actually extremely nice. The class is difficult. If you don't study and pay attention, then you won't do well. She is willing to help you outside of class. I suggest taking trig over summer with her if you want a good foundation for calculus. She's the best
Tian is a great teacher! Make sure you study and do your work DILIGENTLY! She will help you if you dont understand an example. Make sure you are willing to put forth a few hours in the math lab over the course of the class and you will be fine. Know the unit circle!

I actually think she is a very good math teacher. Yeah at times its hard to understand what she is saying but she really trys hard to do the best she can. Her grading is way easier then other math professors. & like people below said "she treats you like a child" but that only goes for the people who act like children and are disrespectful to her.

I don't understand why people rate her so harshly, she's just strict because she wants us to actually work for our grade. She seems tough at first, but the more you attend class the more you realize that she really cares about her students. I'm in the 7-750AM class, and if you're there on time, she always says thank you for working so hard.
I just had her as a tutor in the math lab and oh my god she is mean. If you don't get it, the first time she gets mad and yells at you. I can only imagine what she's like as a full fledged lecture teacher.

pretty much her class was her sitting up there showing us how she can do math really well and not explain anything and she skips tons of steps. so youll write down something...look up and not know what is going on and how she got there! no credit for homework unless 100%complete. no partial credit. its her way and no other way.
Definitely the worst teacher I've ever had. I had her my first semester at Palomar and it made me never want to go back. She gets mad and yells at you if you don't understand the math, and she is the worst at explaining it so you won't understand it.
I really don't understand the ratings she has received, not mean, no yelling, & wants her students to understand and pass the class. She has a specific way to complete problems but it is because that it is the correct way and is necessary as you get into higher math. She is helpful and the tests are right from the homework and examples. Very fair!
Professor Tian was incredibly helpful, kind, and professional. I had the best experience and learned a lot from her in 56. She wants students to excel and is really caring. If you want to do well in her class, you definitely can- all you have to do is try. She's easily accessible and wants to help. I would take her class again in a heartbeat!
Honestly she is not easy to please but if she sees that you pay attention, make an effort, and show up to class she gives you a break. Her ways of teaching are different and I think that's what trips people out.
Math teachers/professors need to be helpful and explain math in a way that makes sense for the student. She does not, simply just a stubborn hard-ass. Marks you down for ridiculous reasons on tests. All I got from the class was a review of what I already knew. I feel bad for anyone trying to learn it for the first time.
At first she seems really tough, but If you stick it out and prove to her that you want to pass, she will definitely help you out. Pay attention and ask questions. If you don't understand it, ask her to tutor you in the math lab. She's an awesome teacher with a lot tough love.

In summary, she thinks lower score in tests means the class is hard and the students are learning, but she does not realize that she gives question that students neither see in Homework nor lecture.Moreover, her direction in test are vague that is why so many people fail. Our math math245 was full of math tutors and I am pretty sure no one got A.

The Accent is hard to listen and understand and she is very finnicy about charter and homeschool students. But everyone is entitles to their own opinon.

The deffinition of a poor teacher. She flew through the material and if any1 stopped her lightspeed teaching flow she would become upset and would put down that student that raised their hand. If you do not do things EXACTUALLY her way she won't even look at the problem. By far the worst all around teacher I've ever had through out my schooling.
I was worried about taking a class with her after seeing all the bad reviews, but I ended up taking it anyways. I sat there in class and was sooooo surprised that she was a good teacher. She goes step by step through the problems & all req homework for the semester is posted on her website so you can get ahead.
If you are thinking about taking this class. SHUT THAT DOWN. Don't waste your time. She seems very angry with life and you can tell she is miserable at her job and thinks every college student is stupid and far below her. There is no pleasing her. I think only 10 people didn't drop out of the 32.
Prof. Tian is very knowledgeable and fair with her work demands. However, you can't slack off. Be persistent and be sure to visit her when you need help. It's surprising how many people are struggling in her class but not seeking help from her. She may come off as gruff sometimes, but she wants everyone to pass. Don't be afraid to talk to her.

Prof. Yan Tian! I will probably never forget her. I love math, but she is a challenge. I learned quite a bit from her on how things you write reflect your thinking. She flies through the material, but she offers a lot of help. This has been a fun challenging class. more than half the class dropped, she is not easy. Take her if you think math iseasy

Feel like you're in middle school all over again. Assigned seating chart and he claims that if you miss 1 class and don't email him he can drop you if he wants. Be ready to sit down and have to do upwards of 70 questions for homework. Doesn't really teach the subject, just writes questions up on the board and expects you to know how to do it.
Teacher: she gives u 5 sections of homework to do if you miss 1 problem you won't get full credit, she will call you out if ur not paying attention. if your lazy don't expect an A. she is very caring every time i drop by her office she gives you goodies! :D I love this teacher and wish she did Math130. she defiantly wants her students to do good STUDYGUIDE or review are exactly like test!! So if you want to pass PAY ATTENTION to the review. Homework is pretty simple if u pay attention. Go to the Math center if ur in trouble.
this class definitely made me grow up as a student, I became more mature and consistent about how i study. I love her for making me work hard for my grade

Very difficult to understand her. Homework is all or nothing. Tests are only 10 questions. Very little points are given, easy to fail. Do not recommend. She tends to get frustrated at you when you ask questions.
She did really well covering everything. I barely spent anytime trying to clarify something in the textbook because she went over it in class. She is also a fair grader. She was actually a good teacher so idk why she has a bad score. It should be higher
Personally, miss Tian is one of the sweetest and kindest people you will ever meet. Professionally, she is a very fair and traditional teacher who does her job with excellence. If you're looking for an easy A, you won't find it here. But if you want to learn college algebra, look no further. She truly has a passion for teaching. Respectlove.
We didn't get to any of the more interesting topics within the text, which was kind of disappointing. She offers good insight into how to approach proofs and certain types of problems which can help A LOT! Lots of fun mini-projects. This class requires a lot of time and it helps to write down the definitions and theorems so you don't have to hunt--
This isn't an "easy" class because she really wants her students to fully understand the material and be prepared for upcoming math classes. Wonderful instructor! I
Great instructor, really CARES about her students' success in the course, makes herself available for questions and feedback about how the material is presented it's a lot of hard work but rewarding in the end highly recommend taking this instructor
The book she uses is one that is really easy to do the work yourself- which is exactly what you will be doing. She has a heavy accent, does not answer questions and instead repeats exactly what you didn't understand in the first place (because she doesn't explain things clearly or slow down to answer questions), she is a VERY strict grader!
DO NOT take this teacher! She has a very heavy accent and doesn't "teach".. she just assumes you know the material. She is strict!! This was my last class that I had to take to transfer and I had to drop! I would rather take it next semester with another professor then with HER.
I was a K-12 student who took the class over summer. You obviously have to be willing to work for your grade. She is understanding and if you need help, its there. Professor Tian may come across as strict, but come after class for questions or concerns and she will definitely help you. Don't be afraid! Everything she does is for your own good.
Tien seems to confuse passion of teaching with being frustrated with students. She is rude when she teaches, corrects tests, etc. Expects students to absorb material immediately. Impatient when asked for clarification. Everyone did poorly on her tests. Entire chapter section is a zero if you miss one question. Don't recommend.
I took her for pre calculus before and passed with a C even tho I retaught myself when I sat down to do the homework but I don't pick math up quickly For 140 she was biased about me to having me before I really think I worked for my grade but ended up dropping bc she frustrated me to no end Hard enough class to take, didnt need to feel discouraged.
Professor Tian is like no other. She feels as though she is teaching Math major students. The homework and group projects to prepare you for the curveballs she throws during her test. She gets frustrated why students don't get the work. She is very unorganized. Her lectures are unplanned and impromptu. STAY AWAY, SAVE YOUR GPA. Shame on you TIAN.
Extremely knowledgeable professor in her field who sincerely desires help and better students. However, a very confusing personality that could frustration even while providing clarification to questions. Awesome asset when providing written examples; but is a disadvantage when explaining giving verbal explanations.
I have taken this instructor before for 110, and there is a reason why i took her again. She is easy to understand and very helpful. What you put in is what you get out. She makes herself available for ANY student who needs help in math at whatever level. I definitely feel prepared for the next level of calc having taken this instructor.
She is a kind instructor if u get to know her. I can tell she feels disrespected when students don't work hard since she does have office hrs(corrects ur projects), gives study guide (w key), and spends time in math lab(brings candy). She is tough but she is the reason why i love math.

If you can take another professor for Calculus, DO IT! You are assigned a number instead of a name. If you fail to complete a problem on the homework you get the a 0 for the whole thing. If you do this too many times, you will be unable to take the test or dropped from the class. Homework requires cover sheets. She is the Asian Hitler.
Test are much harder than the homework assigned. She gets frustrated when the whole class does bad on the exam when nothing she is teaching remotely prepares you for the test. The lectures are unprepared and her handwriting is sloppy. She is sloppy in general. If you have to wait a semester to take a better professor by all means do!
A lot of people posting negative reviews are the type of people that never show up to class or do any practice problems. Professor Tian is a GREAT teacher! She's humerous, clear, and she really wants you to do your best. She's one of the few professors that genuinely care about her students. If you do poorly it's because you don't practice.
All around good teacher. She gives study guides and they are almost exact with the test. The study guides are not graded, but do the study guides and you will get an A or a B. Homework is always graded and can help out with getting your grade up if you are bad at the tests. She is always there to help you, so take advantage.

One of the best math professors at Palomar College if you really want to learn math! If you want an easy A then I would recommend you steer clear. There are study guides before tests that are very helpful and she is always available outside class if you need help!

This teacher is hard, not recommend this class to anyone without a good work ethic. I dislike how she does homework, if you get one question wrong (answers are in the back of the book, she looks at the work) that whole section becomes a zero. You have to do at least half of the homework to take the test. Test are much harder than homework.
You have to work for your grade. If you do all of your homework you should pass. I'm terrible at math. Did all the homework didn't do so great on tests and passed the class. Offers a lot of help outside class. Will go over something until you get it. You just need to put in effort. If I can pass this class, anyone can.
Strict on grading, but ensures that you know exactly how to work problems out correctly. Lots of homework, but prepares you entirely for tests and future courses. Great at teaching, defines things in a manner that makes them simple to understand and formulas easy to remember. You get what you put into the class. Definitely would recommend.
Never take this professor. A student in my class got into a car accident and didn't get to finish his test when he arrived late. Also, a student was absent due to surgery and couldn't take the test . She is hard to understand and homework heavy. I got my wisdom teeth out and she counted my absence as unexcused. Hello? I had surgery! Beware!
I see her trying but most of the time students will be confused and will now help them. You have to do at lease half and they have to be PERFECT of the assignment to be count and your test to be counted as a grade. Her accent does not help either

I put every ounce of effort I had, stayed extra hours in the math lab and still got a D. Retook the next summer with a different professor and guess what? A. She grades way too strict and has all these insane hmwk/test requirements. She never admitted to mistakes. Since she constantly told the class to not read this site on her, it says something.

Professor Tian was the worst math professor ive ever had and i honestly mean it. This is your warning, do not take her. She will dock points if lines arent strait, if your work isnt parallel to eachother etc. Just dont take her.
Ms. Tian is an awesome professor, but you have to work for your grade. Pay attention and do the homework and you'll do well. The homework seems like a lot, but it's really not. She's very kind and understanding. She gives you every chance to succeed in her class. Expect to be held to a higher standard and be organized with your work.
Mrs. Tian is an excellent teacher and really likes what she does. Her teaching style is simple but extremely helpful since she takes you through all the possible questions that might be on the test. She gives study guides for all the tests as well as answer keys. She is a fair teacher with no surprises.

Awful teacher, through the semester witnessed multiple students ask for clarification on questions, and she would barely explain it, and then just move on without making sure the student for-sure understood. Overall she was a ok professor. She is tough but is kind of a good thing. You will have to work for your grade. It will sure not be given. But over all is easy. Do not take this professor. I took her last summer and it was so stressful and difficult. If you get one thing wrong on the homework she will mark the entire thing wrong. She does not give any opportunities to ask questions or clairify on the material. She is the absolute worst professor Ive ever had.
Prof. Tian is one of what I would consider tough but fair professors. If you want to get a good grade, you really have to put in the work and pay attention to instructions. Beyond that, she gives a good amount of help (even allowed us a cheat sheet of formulas on our final) and plenty of opportunities for credit with in-class and group projects.

50% of your grade is based on tests, 20% on the final, and 10% on the homework. During her lectures, she read off the textbook and somehow managed to confuse many people. When I asked for help, she told me that we had just spent and hour on the lecture and that I should do it myself. I would not recommend her.
She is upfront about what she expects from her students. She's a tough grader but fair. The only way to be successful in this class is to give it your all, so if you're looking for an easy A this is not the class for you. Her teaching style really worked for me, she shows lots of examples and makes sure you can do the problems before you leave.
Professor Tians class is not a hard concept to grasp. Study hard, do your homework, and go to class. Expectations for the students are set on day 1. After an 8 week course I can tell you that the students who are criticizing this professor are the ones who did not put forth enough effort. Take it seriously and the proffesor will reciprocate.
This professor made me a better student. She became my mentor. Thanks to her my dream of becoming an electrical engineer is no longer a dream, it's an attainable reality. Professor Tiam is one of the rudest teachers I have encountered. She started off the semester by letting everyone know that teaching this class does nothing for her. Every time Anyone would ask her for help with their work she would get frustrated and make us feel stupid. I would not recommend taking this class.
An extremely rude woman with no consideration for students. She doesnt explain anything and when students ask questions she turns them away to figure it out themselves and then she will graded on the scale that if one of your homework problems is wrong they are all wrong and you will recieve no credit for homework and test.
Ive always been good at math and never had any problems with learning or understanding new concepts. When I got this professor I couldnt understand anything she taught and when I tried to ask for help she would disregard me in a way that made me feel stupid. She does not care about the students if you are passing or failing. I dont recommend.
Attendance is required and she gives you a really hard time for being even one minute late. Some concepts are well explained in lectures but most people have to ask each other for help and go to the math learning center for everything else. Every test has a study guide almost identical which is helpful.
I took her summer class, and it was intense (as most summer classes are), but she gives a lot of extra credit and really works hard to help her students get an A. She's strict, but she loves teaching and loves her students. It takes a bit to get used to her accent, but she is really good at explaining difficult concepts.
Professor Tian is clearly knows her stuff but really fast at teaching the lectures. She cares more about showing work then getting correct answer. When I say show work I mean do it her way or its wrong. She gives reviews for test that are accurate. Anxious to continue with the next lesson before we take the test for lessons the test covers.

She is overall a pretty solid choice, has a bit of an accent, but I found her lectures very clear. She can be a bit picky about notation but that's not entirely abnormal for math teachers. Homework is pretty light compared to other math professors I have had and she provides plenty of opportunities for you to repair your grade late in the semester.
This is the second class I've taken with Prof Tian, she is a great teacher and gives lots of examples! Many of the people on here complaining about her Im guessing didn't put in the necessary effort to pass the class and are taking out their frustrations on here which is unfair to Prof Tian. This is a professor who is very clear about what you have to do to get an A. Do all of your homework, it is a significant amount of your grade. There are 9 chapters and 9 tests not including the final. Once you meet her you might get intimidated because of her demeanor but don't be discouraged because she might surprise you with her generosity.

Checks only one homework problem and if you got it wrong then you lose credit for the entire homework section you spent hours working on. Takes points off for little things on tests like not using an equal sign or using an ellipse instead of comma which easily starts putting you under on your grades. Tough grader, more than half class dropped.
M245 has a lot of logic and wordy problems, so her accent and mumbling, when asked questions, got very confusing. Her exams were very similar to the homework, but she is a tough grader. She is happy to make the highest score on an exam an 81 even with students from UCSB, UCSD, UCLA and UCB. She was mean, harsh, and over half the class dropped.
Such a caring person and a great human being overall. Her teaching style is traditional lecture heavy and strict, but she is always willing to help you through understanding concepts. Her tone may be scary sometimes but she actually means well. If you respect her, she will respect you back. Look past miscommunications and focus on the information.

She disregarded students plead to try to understand the situations that some of us were going through. Do not take her class. Any positive reviews about her are false, at least for our class.

Calculus is hard, but Tian makes it harder now that class is via zoom. Daily quizzes, not enough time to take tests, & harder test questions than notes & hw (now that we have open note & book). I honestly dont even know how Im doing in her class. For the past 4 tests I have taken, I feel that I have done well and that I studied the material. But when test scores arrive, I see I did the complete opposite. And its because she nit-picks SO MUCH!! So much so to the point where you dont even know if youre doing ANYTHING right.

In all honesty, this prof was the only option I had. Surprisingly I passed her class, but I cant stress how much work you have to put in. If you dont know how to do something early on, you will have a hard time grasping the material later. If math isnt your strong suite, please consider getting a tutor because this class is NOT easy at all.
Ive only finished week 1 and if I didnt need a entry level algebra for my fall course I would drop this course now. Shes horrible. The feedback while specific is very critical and often doesnt pertain to the direct material. She told me I had to stop using graph paper, because its hard for her to read. Professor Tian, was very helpful in and outside of class. In the beginning it was a bit difficult. But you will get the hang of it. She is also understanding and gives extra credit when needed. I would definitely take her course again, and may in fact want to take her other classes in the future.

I just couldn't get my head around it. With her guidance and and teaching I have increased my algebraic skills and have finally passed algebra!!!

She's unfair and doesnt teach well. If you're having computer trouble and can't submit an assignment she won't let you turn it in because "it's past the due date". Even if you already have the assignment done she won't help you. You can tell she's not so great with technology either so she doesn't really know any easier way of doing things online.

By far the worst professor teacher I have ever had. I could listen through a whole lecture and not understand a single thing that she has taught. She gives quizzes every class session and for my class we have had a failing average for every single quiz.
Her tests and quizzes count for 70% of your total grade, my class has a failing average on quizzes yet she does not help. There is little to no leniency when it came to technical issues or WiFi problems. It is halfway thru our semester and she has not posted our grades. This is the first class I have ever been failing, I also put in hours of work.
Worst teaching experience Ive ever had the displeasure of spending money on. Professor Tian will not work with you to find any form of middle ground for teaching methods. She will consistently argue with the class when confronted about her incompetency. Quizzes and tests account for 70% of your grade. Reviews do not reflect the tests whatsoever.

Worst professor I have EVER had. She does not care about any technological issue you may have. Can't turn in your quiz within the span of 5 minutes because your internet is slow? "Too bad." I have never faced a professor that lacked this much empathy for people. She makes you feel stupid for asking a question even though she constantly messes up.

I took Professor Tian for Math 130 and she was absolutely awful! She is the worst Professor I have ever had. She is extremely particular about things that don't matter and she isn't even a little understanding. Not sure if she is a better teacher in person, but online I wouldn't tell anyone to take her class even if it was their last option.
Prof. Tian would probably be a better teacher for in-person classes. She has zero empathy for tech issues and does not take accountability for her own tech problems. It was a frustrating class. Pay attention to the lecture, do the HW and STUDY. She respects students for working hard and doing the work. She's a nice person but comes of as harsh.
Professor Tain is a good teacher. Many students have technical problems and are a bit behind on math skills but that doesn't mean she is to blame. My favorite part about her class is that you can get partial credit for some of your answers on Pearson and even your quizzes, f you show all of your work. She basically gives credit for effort.

Whether she is your only option or not, do not take her class for any reason. Half her class drops her within the first few weeks and another quarter almost halfway through. She fails to teach properly, requires camera to be on at all times and to have a second device for testing. The tests by the way are credit/no credit per question. Don't Take!!
I have always been an A student, especially in math. The thing is the class is not impossible. The concepts are not that difficult to understand.... But this professor it to be quite blunt, she's ruthless. If you ask questions she will say " this is easy, you should already know this." Shes also difficult to understand because of a thick accent

I had a good grade until she failed me and a bunch of other students for "cheating" in an online format. If a math class is taken online one would assume that a student would utilize their resources... whatever, wouldn't recement this teacher to anyone, is rude and doesn't have time for anything or anyone.
Math135 (Pre-Calc) as an online/live web class. All assignments were done on Pearson MyLab, which cost about $80. Tips to succeed in this class: Do the homework. Use "View an example" if you're having trouble on hw. You'll use this feature often. Chapter's Practice Test - they are /very/ similar to the real tests Get acquainted with your technology
This is the only math class that I have ever done poorly in. The class dropped from 30+ students day one to 8 after the first test because everyone failed. We had a test every 2 weeks, and after each one she told us she was disappointed in us. No matter how well you did on the homework or classwork, you would fail the tests. No partial credit given
I could have easily learned everything that I needed just by attending the class and doing my homeworks Grading is fair and square all decided by the test scores and homeworks. The professor wants you to do well and encourages questions, not shame you. She grades fair and gives back points on tests. I'd gladly have her again.
She is available at tutoring every week, she allows formula cards during tests, she does review before tests, etc. The only 'problem' that she has, is that she is very direct, which for some people comes of as rude or mean, which isn't her intention. She is very kind and helpful as long as you keep yourself on track and work hard to understand.
Worst experience ever!! How is she still employed? Might as well teach yourself. She made everything hard by providing very little details and with a heavy accent. Don't expect to retain anything from her.
Allows 6x5 card for tests and pretty much shows you the exam on her mathlab review tests so definitely do those! Gives a lot of hw but honestly helps to understand the concepts. Overall very fair professor as long as you get your mathlab stuff done you should be able to pass the class with ease!
She literally teaches out of the textbook when she teaches. She also assigns a ton of homework that will keep you from doing anything else in your life including studying for other classes. She's awful, the 8 students that stick with her to end the year probably keep her rating higher then it needs to be. It shouldnt be above 2.0
This class starts and ends at a super fast pace, so you have to really keep up with all the homework. One recommendation for people who will take this class is that you must ask for the Test Review on each test coming. Most of the reviews, she gives are good review notes for the test.
The teaching style is mentally draining and very repetitive in every class which makes it difficult to pay attention. Even with lots of tutoring and doing well on all the practice tests the tests were extremely difficult as she makes the questions way harder on the real test. The role of a teacher should be to pass kids not fail them.(12/20 failed)
The class is so boring it's like watching paint dry on a wall. This class and teaching style is built for people to fail. Like a sports team, they need a good coach to help them succeed. With a terrible coach, there will be terrible results. That explains the class pretty well as more than half of the kids dropped/failed.
Professor Tian is amazing!! She really appreciates students with drive. She is accessible outside of class, and helps you for as long as you need. She also really takes the time to get to know her students, and is a pleasure to converse with. She has some bad reviews, but these people are just lazy and want someone to blame for their failure.
Business Calculus is no joke, there are complex topics, just finished a summer class and it's fast paced which is made clear. Her style is not for all, but lots of ways to get help in person or online. Set boundaries and take time to build study habits. Shes interested in the success of her students. It will feel hardcore; find ways to engage.
I took this class over summer so it was a lot more fast paced. If you are good at math this class won't be difficult at all but if you are a student that struggles to understand math it may not be the best course, at least during summer, as time is very limited. Put in the work and the class goes by very easily.
I took her Business Calculus class over the summer, so we going over material at twice the speed. This speed and difficulty was well indicated at the beginning. Her expectations were very clear from the beginning. Her lectures were exceptional, and engaging which was the heart of her class. The key to this class is to PARTICIPATE IN THE LECTURES.
First of all, do not take this class if you have a Chromebook. She requires a lockdown browser for exams and Chrome does not support it. I had to buy a whole new laptop in order to take this class. Secondly, her teaching style is basically just solving the problem in front of you and not explaining much. YouTube is your best friend for this class.
I thought Prof. Tian did a good job teaching. She's not easy but is always willing to help you when you get stuck. She cares about her students.
Most math professors are bad but this one is beyond bad. lots of hw, which is only worth like 5% of grade. Have to get a 75 or higher on the hw to be ELIGIBLE to take the test.. Criticizes students in front of class and her exams are not even close to what her lectures are on. Make it make sense. If you're reading this, just retire already.
Run as fast away as you can from this prof. There are lots of bad math teachers out there, but this one is also incredibly mean. She was always annoyed when students asked questions, and she clearly does not enjoy teaching.
Prof. Tian is an amazing teacher. Yes her class is lecture heavy, the tests are pretty challenging, and you need to do the homework. You're here to learn. Her tests are very fair and she gives a lot of points back for doing the problem correctly. PARTICIPATE IN THE LECTURES, go to the learning center, and you will do well. She made me love math.
Professor Tian is a great professor. The tests are tough, but there are no surprises. Do your homework and test reviews and you're good to go. Go to the math lab and ask questions. She's always willing to help and wants her students to do well. She prepares you well for future math classes. I'd absolutely take another one of her courses.
Take an in-person class with someone that clearly conveys the concepts of the math. This class is extremely unclear in every aspect.
Worst class I have ever taken. Professor is rude and not understanding. Makes test work 60% of grade 20% hw assignment . Has so much requirements for test taking. Takes about 1hr of the class just calling out people regarding your camera. She should instead invest that time into actually teaching. Teaches badly . All the ratings are true .
Professor Tian can be demanding, but if you engage with her teaching style and use study aids like unstuckstudy ai, you can succeed in this class. She cares about student learning and is willing to help when you get stuck.
Great teacher. Her homework is hard, but they prepare you well for her tests. She is very understanding, friendly, and helpful if you reach out to her.
Honestly, I wanted to drop her class initially after signing up and seeing how attendance-heavy the class was. However, after staying in the class, I grew to like the class's structure. Her homework helps SO much if you are lost and explains how to work through problems. Keep up with homework and attendance, and you will be fine!
If you're not good at math, take Prof Tian, she dumbs it down so much to the point that it is really easy. Sure you have to show up to class, but just by doing that you're passing with an A!!!
Believe the other bad ratings you see, she even knows about her rating but makes excuses for it. She blames students for why class is behind, is often passive-aggressive, and expects you to love math the way she does and will be upset you aren't. The worst part is that both her accent and handwriting is sometimes very difficult to understand.
DO NOT CONSIDER THIS PROFESSOR. she failed every single person my semester. Some failed because her policy was you get a 0 on an exam if you didn't get good grades on homework. Others failed because she has a heavy accent and doesn't explain things well. She did not submit grades because she would've been fired otherwise. meanest professor ever.
If you struggle with anxiety or illness, please be careful. I was publicly called out after emailing about being sick, and an old issue was brought up in front of the class. It left me shaken and crying. I filed an EW because the stress was too much. I just want others to be aware.
If you're taking Calc 2, take this professor! She explain everything clearly, making even tough concepts feel manageable. The class is well-structured, exams are fair, and assignments reinforce what's taught in lectures. Plus, she genuinely care about students and are always willing to help.
Great professor, while the course was extremely difficult the professor was accessible outside of class and made the concepts really easy to understand. I would 1000% take again, she is just that good. Passed with flying colors and would recommend the class to anyone who is trying to transfer out with a 4.0 like myself. Enough said, G.O.A.T
