A more difficult professor, knows her stuff, and leads enjoyable classes.
A little confusing at times, but she's a very good prof, and friend.
Talks lots about diversity; great prof & person, knows a lot (can be confusing)
Very interesting prof. Brings traditional China beliefs to class
Friendly and fun to listen to. She keeps the class challenging yet fun!
Great class and prof, you will learn a lot and be more diverse
she kept comparing everything to japan :(
she's a great prof but her tests are difficult
Fun class, very interesting, but not easy. She expects a lot from you.
kept the class interested and laughing constantly. a must have prof! learn alot!
She is a great lady that loves her job, and I suggest taking this course!
I'm doing research with her, and she's smart, inspiring, and a great person!
sweet prof, very helpful as long as you help yourself, fun class
She's really nice, but the class was really boring!
She is the nicest lady ever! Very helpful and not a bad class!
A little disorganized, but class is overall pretty easy, just get the articles!!
i took her for both, and i loved her! get help if you need it- very approachable
Nice prof. pretty easy class. take advantage of online overheads, etc.
Very Knowlegeable and helpful, great exams
One of GVSU's best profs. Very helpful and extremely nice. Go to class.
easy tests, good use of blackboard, lets you resubmit papers
fun prof, laughs a lot, test are easy, posts notes on blackboard, VERY HELPFUL
funny, very clear on what she wants, must read
shes a great teacher, if you talk she'll reward you for it
She is a great prof. very funny and nice, I loved the class
She's good. hard to understand.
Easy class if you pay attention and do the readings. She really wants you to pass and is willing to help with all questions. She's very funny and passionate about her work too.
very entertaining, fun class. nice professor, very interesting class.
Good teacher. Intersting class.
Great like has an accent but jokes about it and dosen't mind being corrected. Very nice and helpful.
She's so cute! Very funny, very helpful. Wants you to pass, and very understanding. Definatly take her!
Yen is one of the most passionnate and professional profs in the sociology department. She will do anything she can to help a student. You have to get used to the accent but she really makes it easy to think of her as an equal and not a superior.
She make the class very fun. Even though the class I had was at night I still enjoyed going to her class.
If you like talking in class then you'll enjoy this prof. She's very sweet and funny. No problem understanding her english. Very helpful and she tries hard to help in any way possible. I love this prof!
Very funny, although the class is a little hard, if you go over her study guide, you won't do bad. She is so cute and funny it is hard not to go to class.
Kinda boring at times, likes students who talk in class, easy enough class, need more extra credit, DO REVIEW for final and see her about your tests and papers- she'll reflect it in your grade. Loves students who talk, funny stories, cute/funny lady.
Professor Yu is so sweet! her class is interesting, and she will tell you exactly what to revise on your papers. her tests are not too difficult if you study.
You have to talk in class. She gets boring to listen to but sit in the back and read a book or something. Tests are okay. One big paper. Not too bad.
yan is the best; but she is VERY HARD! DO NOT take this as a gen ed class. She is very funny and light hearted, but she is a hard prof with hard tests. final is not cumulative, which is nice, but nothing else about her tests are nice!
Just about the sweeted person ever. The classes get a little boring but seriously, she is so nice, you'll feel guilty about thinking so.
This covers 2 of the Gen Ed catagories which is nice, but the class itself is kinda hard. I learned SO MUCH though. Her movies are so interesting. Tests are HARD. Not a cumulative final. No homework. 1 term paper-not hard. She is so funny and sweet! GREAT
Great teacher, really nice and funny. Interesting personal experiences to add to lecture. If you go to class and do the readings, exams are not difficult. Requires effort, but worth it. She is always willing to help and her office is always open.
Professor Yu is a very pleasant, funny professor. Watch out for the multiple choice and t/f parts of her tests, but if you study you'll be ok. Little homework, one paper, and a presentation, plus exams--final not cumulative. Definitely recommended.
I really enjoyed taking Yan. Interesting perspective on topics, open-minded with opinions (as long as you give them). Loves participation, 5 EASY hwks: 1 page each and credit is given if you do it. Tests are hard- use study guides, and ask questions. she really does want students to succeed.
If you have half a brain Yan will love you. All you have to do is let her know youre actually working on a paper and you can turn it in like 2 weeks late for full credit. Shes not just a great Prof. but a great person.
Only two exams, midterm and final (not cumulative). Also a research paper, five really easy article reports, and then random quizzes (you get full credit if you're there to take it). Very sweet and funny professor, makes class discussions interesting and loves participation. I'd take her for another class if I could.
Fun class discussions. Loves people who participate. Midterm and cumulative final are a little tough but 5 easy reports can boost grade. You don't need to read the chapters each week but do read the reports, they're on the tests and quizzes. Start your research paper ASAP and she will help you and check your work w/ each step so you get an A.
She's really a sweetie and a fun person. Helps everybody understand everything. overall good professor.
Yan is so sweet and halarious as well. I had a difficult time paying attention to the endless powerpoints (all on BB). She is willing to help. I turned several assignments in late (via email or to her office) which was fine with her.
Yan is so sweet! I loved her as a teacher. I had a little trouble with the 2 exams, but other than that I learned a lot in the class and I think I am getting an A-. Be sure to help her out and participate in class when needed! :) I always felt bad when no one did...(I never wanted to either!) Take her for this class, she's great!
Good teacher, nice women... You can get a B or a C with little effort, but if you but a fair amount of effort (study for tests, spend a little more time on your paper) you will get a high B or an A.
I loved her class. It was very very interesting and she brought her personal experience into the class which made it even better. She is very clear and teaches the hard subject very well. I would love to have her again!
She is a very kind and caring teacher, who has a very open mind to her students. She takes joy in connecting with them, and doesn't push them too hard. She also tends to be very lenient on the grading side.
Good teacher. Sometimes hard to understand because her English is a little rough, but so is very sweet and always willing to learn something new. I loved her class and I suggest that if you need it for a gen ed that you try and get her.
This teacher is a sweetheart. She is always looking for class participation and getting to know students opinions about things. You have to do about 6 article reviews but they arent bad. Be prepared for really long study guides! Overall I would suggest this professor to anyone wanting to take this course.
Yan is very sweet. She is really concerned about her students, and is very lenient/forgiving. She really enjoys class participation. She is very straightforward about tests- study guides are extremely long because of this. Yan can get off topic easily, but she is very sweet and charismatic.
Very kind professor. I learned a lot in this class, but it was disappointing we spent most of the class talking about issues in China. There were many third world countries we could have talked more about but didn't. She cares very much for student progress and is willing to do what she can to help. Has a fun sense of humor.
Yan is very fun; she is still not entirely sure of some English language phrases and slang but that's what makes her fun. However, the material is quite tough, at least from my opinion. Long readings. Term paper wasn't too bad. Grades seemingly lenient. Overall boring class.
She is so helpful! She requires a lot of reading but its not too bad. You can email her your article reports ahead of time to see if you got the point across. If I had time, I would take another soc class again.
To be fair, I had zero interest in this class, so I thought it was boring. She's really nice and tries to make the material interesting, but sometimes time just stood still. There are a lot of in class activities so make sure you go to class! Tests are straight forward and a lot of the questions come right from the powerpoints.
She is such a sweet lady and really passionate about soc. Her tests are right from the material. As long as you read and somewhat pay attention in class you are golden. She does have at least one in-class exercise/week, so you kind of have to go to class. Article reports are easy. Good class. I'd take her as a prof again.
I HATED this class.. it was soooo uninteresting.. i didnt even show up the last month and a half! lol the sad part is i still got an B+. She has in class exercises worth 1 point that do not effect your grade at all. 7 article reports that are pointless and your whole grade is based on the midterm and final which is straight off the study guide
Great teacher!! Learned a lot in this class!! term paper not too bad..i got a 100...and article reports are easi as long as u TRY...easi class to be 300 level..take her!!! shes soo sweet!!
SO EASY! Everything is straight off the study guides for tests. It's kind of boring but she is pretty funny, probably because of her accent. I'd take her again.
she's alright. not a ton of writing for an SWS class. grade is based on 9 or so two-page article reviews, a term paper, and a 5 minute group presentation. DO THE ARTICLES! they aren't graded harshly but if you skip them they are a grade killer because there aren't that many points for the course. says "umm." ever other word, literally. drove me nut
she's a nice lady, easy class. just do the readings for the article reports, and she'll have summaries of the other readings on bb.
Yan is a great teacher! She is very clear on what she wants from you, do the article reviews, write your paper(send it to her she will read it) and study for the midterm and final(she gives u all possible questions on the study guide). She is funny and class goes by quickly. Also you do a presentation that is really easy. I recommend her!
Decent prof, easy to understand what is expected of you. Do the work, you'll get an A.
She is funny and knowledgeable. The class is really easy as long as you do the assignments, read, and put some effort in. Definitely wasn't challenging.
Prof. Yu provides a very interesting take on Sociology as she grew up in China. Don't be afraid of a language barrier as her English is nearly perfect. She is very open and kind when discussing various subjects and allows students to add their input. I had to take her class as a requirement and I have to say it was the prof that mad it fun.
Loved Prof Yu! She is genuinely concerned about her students grasping the information and wants to help as much as possible. Her english is very easy to understand even though she grew up in China. There are a lot of in-class exercises. Only complaint is that her notes changed structure often. Hard to follow with a new style of notes everytime.
She was very helpful and made class lectures pretty engaging. Didn't grade too harshly and was very eager to answer questions. Take her!
Papers are somewhat challenging and we had homework every week; not interesting to listen to but if you work very hard you may still get an A.
Her class is not impossible, but definitely be prepared to but in a lot of time and effort. She will give you assignments every week and 3 exams worth 3/4 of your grade so you need to do well on ALL of them. Not too bad, but I really had to work for my B+.
LOVED this prof! She is funny, intelligent, interesting and organized. She always keeps to the schedule and makes her expectations clear from the beginning. Always available over email and gives a lot of helpful feedback. She relies heavily on the articles so there is a LOT of reading. Challenging class, but I learned a lot.
Negative aspects:reading from 1-3 (15 page) research articles are due every class (towards the end of the year no one really read), 12 two page papers were due over the course of the year. Overall I have no idea what I learned in this class. Everyone in class thought it would be an easy A when started, but we quickly found that was not the case.
Wasn't one of my favorite professors, wouldn't recommend her at all...take someone else if possible. Assigns very difficult journal articles to read. Exams aren't the easiest.
The class is an SWS so you do a lot of reading articles and then writing a review about them once a week. She's a very easy grader and gives you the exam questions in advance, you just have to fill out the study guide, I would def. take her again as a soc professor.
Great professor! She's very helpful and funny. This class requires quite a bit of reading, but skimming the articles normally gets the job done. There are random in-class assignments rather than attendance. TAKE HER.
Professor Yu is very funny. Her expectations are clear and the assignments are easy to complete. If you do the assignments and attend class it's an easy A
Great Prof!! She was very clear about what she expected from you and would give feedback on rough drafts if you asked. Most points in the class are from article reviews and small essays, she grades them very easily. Would definitely recommend!
Class is pointless, but she has participation points, I ended up skipping several classes and only got a few points off. Tests are somewhat difficult, and she wants you to explain the deeper concept in your short essays, which was challenging to know what she wanted. Overall, a good class.
Yan Yu is a very pleasant lady. Her class lectures were always nice, make sure to attend class because she gives in class assignments most of the time, and she does keep track if you come. Her article reports are fairly easy, and so are her exams. Very silly lady, I enjoyed her class!
Yan is funny, but unfortunately not skilled at leading good discussion. Her tests were very easy as she gives comprehensive study guides. While she is very smart, the class was pretty boring and seemed to be a little more in depth than 205. She is very nice, but not very engaging. If you do what you're supposed to though, you will be fine.
Yu is very funny and helpful! There is a lot of reading for this course, but it's not too bad. The midterm and the final are not bad if you study. She gives an extremely helpful study guide. There is also a research paper, but she gives great feedback on the rough draft and if you follow her suggestions you will get an A
Prof Yu is very good and knowledgeable however sometimes hard to understand. You have 7 article reviews (not hard), 1 group project, 1 research paper, and 2 exams (short/ long answer- but gives very detailed study guide). I would suggest taking her!
What seem like the little things in her class end up being huge portions of your total grade, so don't be lazy, do the work. You NEED to participate in class if you want to pass. I didn't do well in her class but that's because I was lazy. She really is a great teacher & willing to help you. Be prepared to work & participate and you will do fine.
She catches your attention and has great lectures. I would take again.
She is wonderful, but be prepared to write and study. This class was taken only for a world perspective and it is one of my hardest classes by far. good luck!
She outlines exactly what you need to study for exams and often takes questions from previous quizzes. Class is boring but enjoyable compared to most. She seems to really care about her students and is more understanding if you miss an assignment or quiz. She has a slight accent but is very easy to understand.
I took this class for SOC 350 over the summer, she is very helpful. Theres lots of articles to read with 1 page papers to submit weekly. The test are multiple choice and short answer
Professor Yu is a very sweet lady. She is very passionate about her teaching and makes it fun and relevant to the students' lives. She is also hilarious. there are quizzes over each chapter that are somewhat challenging, but she does post a list of study questions to answer on Blackboard. I took this class for a Gen Ed credit and am glad I did
Quizzes every week, but there is a study guide that almost exactly mirrors the quizzes. She assigns a couple short papers throughout the year, offers extra credit. Very nice and caring. Always willing to help
Makes the class harder than it needs to be. Graded almost fully on pre quizzes I wouldn't take this unless you need to.
Professor Yu is a gentle and kind professor. She has her funny moments because she is Chinese, so when we're talking about American traditions or practices (ones she hasn't heard of) it can make for a good laugh in class. Do your reading, they aren't hard, and they're quite eye-opening as well! Great class!
I think if you put in the effort, you can easily get an A. Class is mainly taught from a bunch of articles. It's an SWS class, so it is writing heavy but she is pretty easy about her grading. She talks a lot and drags out discussion but its fine. There are in class participation points so don't skip too many classes. She is a very sweet prof!
Easy Grader
I think that Yan Yu is an amazing lady but I felt that her course was harder then the previous reviews had me expecting you have a quiz every week that is directly from the book. So if you dont like reading I wouldnt recommend but I absolutely love Yan as a person
Quizzes every week but she gives you reading questions that are basically the quiz. If you email those to her she will fix them and add more to what your answers are. That helped me greatly in studying for the quizzes. 6 Reading Responses that aren't too difficult. Lots of in class exercises so don't skip a lot! Fairly easy class overall!
Professor Yu is really nice. She sometimes rambles and gets off topic, but usually its still mostly relevant, and gives real world context to the lessons. She is also learning a lot about gender and sexuality topics. I heard some stories about her tact with regards to gender and sexuality topics but shes definitely a lot better now! I liked her.
Professor Yu is such a sweet lady! There are 8 quizzes based off of the readings, 2 exams, and 6 reading responses. If you read the chapters, this class is very easy. The content is very interesting too. She makes the class really enjoyable. She does have an accent, but it is not hard to understand her. Also, participation is strongly encouraged!
She is a good professor but gives way too many reading responses/ take home assignments/ exams. There is usually an exam every week and either a reading response or a take home assignment which results in lots of work if you're also reading the textbook chapter that goes along with the class. (Which I suggest you do).
She was very clear about what she wanted. The quizzes were almost too easy and she always hints about whats going to be on there. The take home exercises and reading take 20 minutes if you know what youre doing. I word of advice: go over the quizzes for the exam because almost all the questions are from them. Very easy, I loved having her
Took class in Fall 2020. She has long lectures but cares about what she is teaching. She gives a decent amount of work but always gives you time to complete each assignment with spread out due dates. One quiz and little writing assignment due each week, but easy if you listen to her lecture. she also makes material very easy to understand.
I liked Yan! This class was pretty easy, but she wasnt super clear on what we needed to know for quizzes and exams. Stick to the lecture videos, read the chapters, and do the assignments and youll do fine!
This professor is my favorite professor I have had. She is so sweet and funny and even though she gets off topic, it does always loop back to the material we are discussing in class. Her assignments are really straight forward and as long as you do your work and read the book, you will be fine. Highly recommend.
Professor Yu is a goofy professor. The material was straightforward and easy to learn. She tends to ramble in lectures and wasted class time. She was very understanding and always offered her help!
shes such a sweetheart and youll love her if you have a soul. but she gets off topic a lot, which we love her for.
You cover so much each class, we were all scrambling taking notes. Tests very detailed questions straight from lecture. But her study guides were very detailed. She let us take our exams at home thankfully or I would have done way worse on them. She's super funny, I would not take this class online because that would be boring- take in person.
Prof Yu is so sweet & likes to connect with her students. She likes for her students to participate & share their experiences relating to the class materials. The textbook homework is easy. A few reading responses & take home exercises. she is very clear ab what is on exams & both were taken online. such a kind woman who really loves her job
Had her a couple semesters ago, such a nice/sweet lady. Don't need the textbook but need to read articles for short weekly papers you write. Tells you what short answer questions could be on the exam, everything basically comes from lectures. If you put in effort you will do very well but you do have to write a lot which can get old
Yan is honestly one of the sweetest profs I've ever had. I'm a conservative business major male and I appreciated this class a lot. Yan is so knowledgable and funny and she grades super well and reasonable. You don't need a book, just prepare to read interesting scholarly articles. Final paper is a breeze after reading so many :). Thanks Yan!
Sometimes it gets hard to follow lectures because she reads from her paper notes instead of making slides so you have to write really fast. The assignments in this class are easy and quick. If you do the required readings, you will be fine.
A very sweet professor! I enjoyed her passion about what she was teaching, it made it easy to be engaged with everything. Definitely read all the readings and be ready to discuss them in class as participation is a chunk of your grade. Not too many assignments and everything is pretty clear and she's good at answering questions if something isn't.
Lots and lots of writing. The tests were based on the readings and video so you need to really read everything and pay attention. Lots of long articles and very confusing and the exams are long and very focused on her lectures and the specifics in the readings.
Yan is super nice and you can tell she cares about her students. Her grading is based on 10 quizes, 5 take-home assignments, and 2 exams. I would definitely recommend reading the articles she assigns you discus them in class and it makes the material easier to understand
Coursework consisted of in class assignments that were completion based, Inquizitives, 5 take home assignments, midterm, & final. There was also a lot of readings for this class. Definitely recommend taking this course to fulfill the US Diversity requirement. Such a kind and sweet professor.
Yu is amazing, she's so sweet, and very accommodating to students who need extensions or have schedule conflicts. She is so knowledgeable about her field, and passionate in helping students learn. Her group work is not hard, but it's a large part of your grade. It's an SWS so there is a lot of writing, but she grades easily. Highly recommend
Yan is sweet, and understanding, and overall the class was easy. Every week there are at least 2-3 online assignments but they are easy. Attendance is required but if you can't make it all you have to do is email her before class. Exams are a bit hard but if you do good on the other assignments you'll be fine.
Great professor, makes every lecture interesting and has interesting topics. Homework's weren't that great when it came to relevant information. If you think sitting in class will do your wrong, PAY ATTENTION. Everything she talks about is important for understanding the material and what information you need from the textbook.
She is the sweetest professor I have ever had. This is the second class I have taken with her. She is an easy grader and only wants her students to do well. They way she presents the lecture material is so well done and I wish I could take more classes with her. Definitely take her if you have the opportunity!
So sweet and so nice. Respects all students and jokes around a lot in class. Lectures are not confusing and assignments are very straightforward and take home assignments are super easy and she gives you a lot of time to do them. Love the class and the professor, highly recommend taking.
Prof Yan is super sweet and engaged. The lectures are engaging, but it helps to keep up with the readings. The assignments are manageable, and Unstuck ai was a great study tool alongside the textbook.
Class was very lecture heavy, but is all valuable information. Make sure to take in all information because anything she talks about is game for the exams.
Professor Yu was what I wish all professors could be. Super caring. Everything is organized on blackboard and the information you need to remember for quizzes and exams are word for word from the slides and weekly Inquisitive. That being said, if you miss out on the lectures as well as class you are missing A LOT of what is need to know for exams.
There is an online test every week, as well as many exams throughout the semester, however she is extremely funny and all and all her class is pretty easy and chill. some personal things are brought up in her class that is integrated throughout homework so if you're sensitive to topics about race or sex maybe skip this class.
She was super nice and funny. We had an online textbook and the chapters were really long. There are a lot of assignments to do so make sure to look at blackboard and see when they're due. The quizzes are easy but some in take home assignments and readings are just so long and boring. Most of those assignments are due at the beginning of class.
