Hard to understand!
You can't understand a word he says & he makes you write alot of notes
Very, very hard to understand (accent).
His english is fine...can you speak chinese?
He's probably a nice guy, but you can't understand a word he says.
Good prof, may be hard to understand, but the notes you get are great!!
Wow this guy does so many things at once and it is hard to keep up. You have to try and make out what he is trying to say, write notes off one overhead and look at the other overhead at examples and diagrams. Hard class.
he sucks at teaching but atleast he is something to look at prrrr
No Comments
He is a bit hard to understand, but he makes up for it by putting all of his notes on the overhead and using lots of examples. He seemed like a very nice man, was very supportive to the class. He would be easier to understand in a smaller class setting.
Yes, his accent makes things a little difficult, but gives great notes, is very helpful and approachable. Only complaints are having to write too many notes too fast, and the plant development section(personally). Can also find his notes online.
What an accent. A ggod guy who knew his stuff, unfortunately no one could understand him...
Just remember...Deenay = DNA...yes he has a thick accent BUT he knows what he's talking about. Very friendly.
Okay guys, he's not that hard to understand. Maybe if you didn't talk in class you would know what he was saying. The best way to learn from him is to summarize his detailed overhead notes in your own words and then listen to what he is saying.
he's the nicest guy you'll ever meet, but very hard to understand when teaching. However, he's the most helpful prof if you just ask.
Yeah, he really is that hard to understand. Read from the text and avoid having to go to class because it's probably more helpful.
Very nice guy, helpful and wise... unfortunatly speaks neither of Canada's official languages. Oh well, read his notes and the text and you'll find he marks fairly.
This was a great class but too much crop science stuff.
cant understand him....stay home and sleep!
I liked most of the course material but you had to definetely pay attention to understand what he was talking about. Easy to get lost, and have no idea whats going on. Labs were fun. Easy prof to talk to.
This is the NICEST prof ever. The lab is pretty tough b/c there is alot of material, but the whole course is extremely interesting. He is very approachable and sincerely cares about his students and how he can help them. The poor reviews are from 1st year students. You have to be in university for awhile to truely appreciate how great he is.
He is a really nice prof and he really cares, he tries so hard to get his point across, even though he doesn't speak very good English at all. Just read his notes and you will understand.
Really, really, really hard time trying to understand this guy.
sweetest man on earth. he really cares about his students and wants them to learn the material. he is aware of the language barrier regarding his accent, and is a little insecure about it which is why he will usually post extra notes. really passionate but a bit scatterbrained :P overall, really good guy, the accent makes you listen harder!
Great Prof! He is a bit hard to understand but easy to catch on to. He genuinely cares so much about his students, and even brings donuts to class sometimes. Labs were fun, and class was easy if you study you will do awesome.
His notes are very good. His examples that he uses are usually all on the exam. Very straightforward and clear notes but has an accent.
Dr. Wei is an excellent professor! I will be completing my degree this year and he is one of the best professors I have had. I have no problem understanding him at all.
absolutely not able to understand this guy. Skipped every class of his for a month, along with 50+ other kids who thought the same thing. He knows his stuff, and gives notes online, but I cannot understand him
Professor Wei was, in my opinion, a very good teacher. He knew what he was talking about, and made it extremely clear what he expected from his students. He understood the slight language barrier, and compensated for it with his posting of notes and good pace. Only negative was that I felt he dwelt too much on unnecessary topics. Great otherwise.
Made the mistake of telling my friends I had heard he was a terrible prof-- right in front of him! I take it all back. His material was well put together, very easy exams, and over all a great professor. He had some great topics and I would take more classes with him if I were into plants!
Wei was fairly good professor. He is hard to understand sometimes because of his accent - but he is aware of it and tries really hard to make sure you know what he is saying. His slides are easily understood and almost everything on slides are on the exam. Attend the class and he will sometimes highlight or give hints for the final.
Wei was a good prof. Had a thick accent but was aware of it, he repeated important terms and had them on the board so it wasnt a problem. Was humourous and explained concepts well. He prepared us for the test well.
Dr. Wei is a great guy. He cares about Bio and does his best to teach everything within class. His slides are very good. His only downfall is the language barrier, as he does not speak English clearly. He is aware of this and apologizes frequently which shows he's caring.
He has a pretty strong accent, but I wasn't really bothered by it. His power point slides were really good and the information he gave was always necessary.
Dr Wei knows that students can not understand him (gives full notes on blackboard) I ended up no going to class because I could not understand him and my marks reciprocated that. weather that is my fault, his, or no ones. makes sure you keep up and learn photosynthesis
Makes it very clear what you need to know, I found lectures helpful to keep on track and hear him explain things. Language barrier seems horrible at first but easy to understand when you pay attention and get used to it.
Very confusing lecturer
Wei was a breath of fresh air after Chedrese. He understands that Bio 120 comprises a lot of information and has a very clear structure to his lectures and slides. He explains well and is clear as to what will be on the exam. Some people found his accent difficult, but he over annunciates well and is open to explaining again - he's fab!!
He is a very nice and caring professor, however he is almost impossible to understand. He has very well put together slides and materials but due to a language barrier it's very difficult to learn. He understand that though and really tries his best. But I would recommend choosing a different prof if you have the choice.
Sweetest prof and you can tell he genuinely cares about his students! If you are ever confused approach him after class, he is more than willing to help. Tells the class what will be on the exam and wants you to do well. His accent can be hard to understand from time to time but honestly his powerpoint make up for it; seriously, they're beautiful.
Yangdou is very nice guy! He often sympathizes with the class about how hard we have it as students. He is very knowledgeable about the class and offers full notes online. My rating wouldnt be correct if I did not mention the tough accent he has. But if you listen carefully you can make sense of it.
Too many people said he was a terrible prof because of his accent, but he really wasnt that bad. he knew that some people couldnt understand him and was happy to meet students outside of class to reexplain things. His half pf the class has more difficult material, and he did a great job. The textbook covers anything you dont get from his lectures.
He's a very kind professor who genuinely cares about his students. However, he did quite a lot of rambling and wasn't clear on what sections of his lectures would be on the test.
Dr. Wei's accent is not hard to understand. If you day dream and aren't good with the terminology you will struggle. I did not have any issues understanding him. Very nice man, and interesting lectures.
Dr. Wei's accent is not that hard to understand. His power points are AWESOME; they're direct and organized. Plus, he's kind and he's willing to help out if you need it. Language barrier may be a bit difficult to get across but he definitely knows his stuff
I don't want to take away from all of the positives - he's very nice, and the slides he put together were easy to follow, but he's completely unreachable. Expect to wait at least 2 weeks for a response if you hear back at all.
His lectures are organized and easy to follow and take notes from. His quiz was more challenging than other profs but not a fault of his. Overall, he's very helpful and quick to respond to any questions I had.
It's not that professor Wei is a bad prof, it is just I have a hard time with understanding people with accents and I really struggled watching his lectures so I just read them myself to teach myself. He is a very nice guy and his slides are pretty detailed. If you have a hard time understanding accents like me then I would try another prof.
Good professor, he just has a strong accent. Explained the biochem parts of 120 very thoroughly.
Very hard to understand
Dr. Wei is a great professor who is clearly very passionate about what he does. I did not find his accent hard to understand, but if I ever got confused his detailed slides helped me figure it out. He made his lectures more interesting by adding stories or other information he knows which I enjoyed.
The sweetest prof - always starts class by thanking students for coming and telling us we are doing fine. :) Dr. Wei's slides are detailed and are fully accessible on Canvas so if you forget/miss something, you can always refer back. You still need to invest time out of class to do well and he is transparent about that!
Sweetest man ever, he suggests using a textbook but said everything on an exam will be in his lecture slides. He appreciates when people go to his classes in person, but provides all notes just in case people dont come. His accent isnt even that bad at all tbh. Goes into detail in lectures and cares about his students a lot!
Very nice man and tries his hardest but sadly his accent is almost impossible to understand and makes comprehension very difficult.
Pros: helpful. passionate. great ROI time x grades. truly knowledgeable. best pathology prof in the prairies. Cons: likes morning classes LOL, sometimes goes off topic (I like that bc it's normally a cool topic, but it does make it harder to take notes sometimes) classes= not mandatory, but he really appreciates if you do come. pls go support
Wei is one of the best profs at Usask, especially in the biology department. He is always prepared for class and is very knowledgeable. He will accommodate student requests if they are reasonable and is a very caring professor. Occasionally goes off topic in lecture but is always quick to stay on task. You get what you put in to the course.
Some may say he is hard to understand, but he acknowledges that and speaks very clearly. He rly knows his stuff. He is very approachable and you can tell he wants his students to succeed. Unfortunately this course was team taught with another prof that was not nearly as good. The exams were department ran, very difficult to get a good grade.
Absolute beauty of a prof. The English language is not Yangdou's strong suit, however he is a very passionate prof and is super knowledgeable in his subject. No textbook was required, and he had every bit of information you needed in the slides. Overall really great prof just hard to understand.
He was difficult to understand at times, and during lectures I would be focusing so hard on actually trying to understand what he was saying which then resulted in me not listening to everything else. He doesn't explain topics in depth and just glances over topics and reads off the powerpoint slides. But, despite that his final exam was kinda easy.
Going to his lectures was pointless because you could not understand what he is yapping on about. I had to teach myself all of the class material from his PowerPoint. I would recommend having a different professor for Bio 120. He appreciated people coming to his classes, but there was no point in being at his lectures.
Professor Wei is very passionate about biology. But his accent is very thick and hard to understand. His lectures are not recorded which makes it hard. I ended up getting a tutor once a week to go over everything he covered in class each week because I had a hard time understanding him.
While yes, his accent may be hard to understand, he acknowledges that and tries his best. He is passionate and has more detailed slides than most profs. He teaches in a way that does not require the textbook. He even laid out quite closely what would be on the exam. Overall a great prof. And such a cute personality, just lovable all around.
dr Wei is a great professor when it comes to being clear of what is going to be on exams and including a lot of information in the lecture slides. he clearly loves what he teaches and cares about his students. however he does have quite a thick accent that can be difficult to understand at times.
At first it was hard to understand his accent but you really get used to it before halfway throughout the course! Really passionate, knowledgable and caring prof. Always thanks students for coming to the lecture and understands that we have lives outside the door. I'd take his classes again.
Dr. Wei is probably the most caring prof I have had, he is very kind and understanding.
Very caring. Wants you to succeed
He cares so much about his class. His lectures are pretty accurate to what you will see on a test. Would go off topic sometimes but that always led to an interesting story.
he was very sweet and had lots of interesting stories to tell. His accent made him hard to understand at times.
Professor Wei is a really nice guy who is very knowledgeable in his subject. However, he is virtually impossible to understand. I have only just began this course and honestly think it would be better reviewing the material on your own & reading the textbook in the library rather than wasting your time attending the lectures.
He is a very very nice guy and I do love him as a person. However he is not a good prof. He is hard to understand which he acknowledges, and he doesn't prepare students as much as other profs in bio like Ambrose did. Biology 120 wasn't a hard class, and his slides were very detailed.
Professor Wei was a good teacher, but due to his heavy accent it was very difficult many lectures. As well as while comparing to peers who had other professors for this class, they were better prepared.
Wei is the sweetest prof and does care how his students do, however his accent can be a factor that controls your grade. He does try his best but sometimes it can be difficult to understand him during lectures. His slides are very detailed and provide all info needed for the class. I appreciated his humour and ability to find joy in each day!
Accent is a little hard to understand initially but you get used to it after a few lectures. One of the nicest profs ever, genuinely wants you to do well. Could have prepared us a little better but his presentations have everything he goes over minus tangents. Skipping lecture and going over the textbook would work as well. Decent prof overall.
I'd recommend if you struggle with accents then you should pick another prof but after I began to understand him more, it felt like a more engaging class. He is very honest with his students, he gave us the question distribution by unit for the final which was helpful. His slides were very good so you could easily self study.
Professor Wei was a really nice guy, however, due to his heavy accent, he was very difficult to understand. In addition, his lectures are relatively large (mine had 500 people), which made me less likely go. I felt it wasn't worth my time to go since I wouldn't understand what he saying most of the time. 50% of the grade does come from the lab.
Professor Wei is one of the nicest and most approachable professors I've had. He's honest, down-to-earth, and genuinely cares about his students. His lecture slides are well-organized, easy to follow, and go into enough detail to make studying straightforward. Most exam questions come directly from the slides, making preparation more manageable.
Really passionate professor when it comes to and was always very nice. Made sure there was loads of material and prep before hand.
Professor Wei is such a kind man. He is very down to earth and really wants students to succeed in his class. His accent is something I have gotten used to and I find that I am able to understand him better now! He is so passionate about Biology and has been great so far!
Hard to understand, but nice
He is such a sweet and caring prof. He's very kind and passionate about biology. He genuinely wants his students to succeed and is super encouraging to everyone. He creates a very positive learning environment and is always happy to answer questions. People rate him way too harshly in my opinion, his accent is easy for me to understand :)
Super kind prof
Very nice, I found him easy to understand
Genuinely one of the kindest and most caring professors I have met. He's extremely passionate about biology and truly wants all of his students to understand the material in order to succeed in his class. Initially, I struggled to understand his accent. However, after attending a week of his lectures, this issue was resolved as I adjusted to it.
Professor Yangdou Wei is a great professor. With so much experience, he is able to condense his knowledge of Biology in a concise matter. I also enjoy his lectures because he himself enjoys what he does. His accent can be a little challenging to understand, but once you get used to it, you will enjoy his lectures.
Professor Wei is very skilled as a lecturer, he tries his best to make sure every student is showing understanding and has offered extra one-on-one help several times. Also, he openly answers questions after each lecture in great depth if you missed something or need further understanding. Best professor I have had so far!
I love this prof! he genuinely cares for his students and wants them all to do well. All material on exams is from lecture slides and makes everything very easy. He has a heavy accent but since material is drawn from slides, it doesnt really matter. 100% would take this again!
Dr. Wei cares about his students and is a very passionate prof. Although most of the complaints about him is his accent, I found it was fairly easy to understand him if you are actually paying attention in his lectures. Would take any class of his in the future.
I loved Dr. Wei. There were a lot of complaints about his accent, but i found that if you just paid attention it really wasnt that difficult to understand. teaches the material very well, and genuinly cares about the students he is teaching. he is always trying to make the class laugh as well. great guy and highly recommend
Dr. Wei is a great professor. His accent is a little thick but majority of the time you'll know what he's saying. He explains things very clearly and always informs you on what things are going to be on the final exam (take notes when he says something is gonna be on the exam because he's almost 100% correct. Very friendly, approachable, caring!
He is a wonderful professor! I enjoyed being in his class and he explains the concept so well. He really cares for his students and wants us to do well on the exams, his lecture notes are easy to follow and he tells us what is most likely going to be on the exam.
He's very kind and can be funny. His lectures go into more detail than what's needed for the exams, but they're still clear and easy to follow. The only downside is that his accent can be a bit hard to understand at times, especially in the large lecture hall.
Amazing Professor. I highly recommend taking his classes. He is very passionate about Biology and it helps to inspire others. He is very helpful and always willing to meet with students to help or review tests. He is knowledgeable and explains above and beyond which is helpful if you want to learn lots. Tests are reasonable and not too difficult.
Great guy, accent can make it hard to understand but he truly is passionate in helping students. Issue is, sometimes the material he focuses on in lecture is somewhat irrelevant to testable material. Beware as well, his class is less in depth than other bio120s, causing our final exam to have quite a few questions classmates had to guess on.
Kindest prof ever, he has an accent but you get used to it after a few lectures. He literally says "There is likely going to be a question about this on the midterm/final" and he's usually right. He likes to cover extra material but lets you know its not tested and just want to share his knowledge out of passion. Holds review lectures which help.
Dr. Wei is an awesome prof and a super kind guy! If you attend lectures regularly, you will adjust to his accent quickly!! Very engaging and often cracked jokes, made hard concepts simple to understand. So sweet and genuinely cares so much how his students do in the class. Highly recommend!
He truly cared about his students and wanted to see the class succeed. His accent was a bit tough to understand at times but he really tired to make sure we understood what he was teaching. He would give good review lectures before the midterm and final and was always open to a discussion/help outside of lectures. He was witty and funny also!
Accent is tough to understand at times, but he is a very kind and intelligent prof. He knows what he is talking about and highlights things that might be on the test.
Thick accent, but not indecipherable. The lectures covered high-yield concepts, but many of the more niche pieces of information needed to excel (not just pass) would have to be learnt on your own time (gave comprehensive learning objectives for this). Very kind, funny, and evidently passionate about his subject.
