She does care about her students and takes certain actions which actually make the students not be stressed. I did enjoy her classes.
I think she put in more effort than all my profs combined. She really knows her stuff and lectures in a clear way. What I found more inspirational than anything was the fact that she literally typed up an entire booklet (150 pages worth of notes) because she found the textbook terse.
Her lectures are boring, she pretty much reads straight from the notes. This is the easiest math course though, so just study the notes because she asks a few MC questions and make a good formula sheet for the rest. The hardest part was the group project, she didnt explain properly what was expected, and presentations were during the exam period.
She clearly presented the material in class with helpful handouts. Her tests were fair. Would take a course with her again.
Horrible prof! Chose some rubbish book then wrote some awful notes. Not gonna take again
Her teaching abilities are ok. Gave us a ton of videos of her explaining the notes, which meant taking notes for 4+ hrs week, on top of the discussion period and weekly quizzes. Requested the class to do presentations during the exam period, even though term work has to be submitted before the exam period by faculty policy.
Most confusing prof ever, disorganized. There were alot websites used for no reason. we had 2 tests and each one was on a different site, the grades were in another one. assignments were on different sites each. She hasno knowledge on what she teaches and won't answer any Qs unless its on the textbook and reads off it. tests were all over the place
One of the worst professors I've had yet - and I've had quite a few.
The worst person and prof. Gave us a test with 4 LONG questions and gave us 50 minuets. everybody complained but nothing changed and she is so petty that she said "I did the test in 40 minutes" like she isn't the prof and she has no knowledge on what she is talking about. disorganized and answered EVERY question with "idk what your question is" :
Yanhua Amanda Tian is like the worst instructor I've had at York. She like barely gets the material and sometimes randomly gets rude and arrogant. Boring lectures two, makes the material feel dull.
Terrible. The last prof you should think about. She is rude and won't answer ANY questions and when she does she gives you a HUGE sigh before doing so. Has no idea what she is talking about and no knowledge on any of the material. she pre recorded her lectures and in the you can hear her turning pages frantically when she doesn't know the topic.
Seriously one of the most obnoxious people I've ever met - terrible personality and attitude. Completely useless as a professor, I wouldn't be surprised if she lied about her degree just to get the job. Avoid her classes and thank me later.
Disorganized and doesn't know anything. She just copies off of pages. Doubt there's any benefit in actually listening to her teaching and by "teaching" I mean just reading and copying the textbook.
She terrible at conveying material
Extremely difficult to understand. Useless as an instructor, I got by by using notes from past classes. Taking a class with her was the biggest mistake I made at York. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
They are not available for questions, just awful recordings. Don't be surprised if you find yourself seeking external resources. They are impatient and often confused when ya'll finally are able to ask them questions. Bad teacher. Thumbs down.
She's unbelievably difficult to understand. Even more harder if you are like me who is not a native English speaker. I would avoid this prof, if some reason you have too take something with her than just read the books. Otherwise do yourself a favor and avoid!
I wasn't expecting university profs to be like this. It looks like she has no flying clue what she's talking about. Had a very hard time understanding her. If you ask her anything and somehow understand her, remember that her answers usually don't even address the question. I heard same stuff from classmates. I'll be avoiding any of her classes.
Had few interactions, and was rude and not willing to hear students out. Expected a better learning experience since York is charing us so much tuition, overall disappointed.
The mode of lecture used is very inefficient. Pre-recorded videos are played over zoom and not posted on online platforms for students to later review. The recorded lectures itself are confusing as most of the time shes rushing through them and its hard to comprehend whats going on. Self-study is carrying me in this class right now.
Won't answer questions, horrible teaching, just plays prerecorded videos on zoom and barely explains concepts.
She seems like she has no clue of what's going on in the material. She can't seem to answer ANY questions. How did she even become a professor? She's literally just reading off of pages! York, what the heck is going on?
Super unreasonable. Inadequate teaching skills. No textbook for this class, so you're stuck using her prerecorded lectures and sample code scripts. The resources she provides will not prepare you for her tests! Poor English comprehension will leave you clueless trying to understand her test questions. She does not understand anything you say to her
Horrible instructor. Not very accessible outside of lecture hours. If you end up in her class, remember that the only true friend you have there is the textbook. She's extremely difficult to understand. Also, it often looks as though she is trying to make the lecture hard to understand. Either that or she doesn't know how to teach. Unreasonable.
AVOID THIS PROF AT ALL COSTS. By far the worst professor I've ever had. During COVID she would play pre-recorded videos as her lectures. Her first midterm was easy but the content was very easy. Her second midterm didn't match what she taught us and was the hardest midterm. She also decided to add R (coding-like software), thanks tian...
Yanhua Tian is by far one of the worst instructors I've ever had at York. Her course website is extremely unorganized and messy, her feedback is lackluster (if she even responds to you questions/ emails). Her instinctual response to any questions criticism is to deflect the topic to something else. Her lectures are all prerecorded and dull. Awful.
Very unorganized, does not care about students, plays pre-recorded lectures during her "live" lectures with very bad audio. Has a really bad attitude and barely answers questions and does not give feedback. Does not know how to do reviews, her voice is irritating mainly because she sounds as if she does not want to even be here/teach.
Horrible Horrible prof, worst prof ive ever had. The course site is not organized at all and isnt updated. Her way of recording the lectures is just stupid, plays her own recording and makes us watch that LIVE and posts the whole live lecture where she didnt talk at all instead of posting the pre recorded lectures. Ifuhave her just switch / drop.
What can I say? She's unreasonable, obnoxious, horrible, difficult to understand, clueless, the list goes on and on. The most valuable lesson I learned was that your choice of professors greatly effects your learning.
Do you want a professor who like to take your higher education funds such that you end up being lied, cheated, discriminated, and also dishonoring the educational system, then this is your go to professor right here. A person who claims to have creditenals as a statistic professor has 0 tolerance in helping students to get through their goals.
Professor Tian is the best professor. I took her course MATH1131 during this first semester. Her lectures were understandable, and helped me deeply to understand statistics and do well on my midterms, assignments, and on my final. I highly recommend her, to take the course.
Hard to understand and unreasonable.
Disorganized, difficult to understand, doesn't like students asking questions
Good professor. Give good mark. Definitely will take again.
She recorded her lectures, they were concise and easy to understand. The tests and exam were straight forward, definitely not difficult. There wasn't hard material or anything. The assignments were easy, and there was one every week. Be sure to get 90%+ on all of them to balance out your tests/exam marks. You'll have a good chance of getting an A.
Her tests and assignments are okay but I really didn't like her teaching style or her not too helpful answers to my questions. She seems okay as a person but I feel as if she doesn't put too much effort into helping students outside of lecture hours. I'm doing well so far but I'm really not looking forward to the upcoming exam.
This Professor does not prepare you at all for the tests.
NO PRACTICE
Bad preparation for evaluations, doesn't care about students, better to read the book and guess what is being evaluated.
Very disorganized. The class is hard to keep track of. Despite the expectations seeming fair, I'm still going to take it with someone else
Honestly, I do not understand the poor ratings. She answers everyone's questions & comes up with an example off the top of her head. She gives a review of the previous material learned the day before, literally every single class. The only thing I don't like is the accent. It makes certain things she says confusing but if you ask, she answers.
A great lecturer that thoroughly explains things and repeats them as many times as needed. She's super nice and her tests directly correlate to the notes she gives us. The notes are easy to understand and have a variety of real-life applications. A good marker as well. Would recommend.
Difficult to understand and bad exam prep
Really couldn't enjoy one of my favourite subjects, you have to take notes during lectures to review later since the notes she releases are criminally incomplete. Hope she prepares and RELEASES the material for the next students.
An above average professor. Her tests + exam had a combined weight of 90%, but they were all practically ripped from the lecture notes. She always said to prioritize lecture notes over textbook examples, and she was true to this. She can be difficult at times, getting impatient at some students, but tbh, these students were clueless. A solid choice
Her English is difficult to understand
She delivered lectures well.
Worst instructor I've had so far. Lectures were hard to understand and her responses were always confusing.
Easy pass course. Take her, you won't regret it. She gives good feedback every time, you can always ask her questions on zoom when you have confusion. Nice lady!
She has been a really nice professor to all of us in the class. Her tests and final exam are entirely based on her lecture notes. Everything is fair game in this class. Attend the tutorials for the lab quizzes worth 5%, and do the group project worth 10%.
Stats with Prof. Tian was one of the worst experiences I've ever had at York. Her instruction is barely comprehensible, she fails to adequately explain concepts, and she does not assign ANY practice problems. To make matters worse, she doesn't even post her lecture notes online for students to review! I learned nothing from this class.
She wasn't a great professor and came across as disorganized, impatient and arrogant. She wasn't interested in being too helpful outside of class. I will never take her again. Stay away!
Avoid having her as much as possible, this was the worst experience ever. Her lectures are truly known as the most boring ones. She is the type of instructor who makes you hate math to a point where you start thinking of giving up upon your studies.
Lectures were almost useless, asking questions wasn't a pleasant experience. Bad instructor.
My second course with this instructor. Very organized lectures. She provides a very helpful 100-page handout summarizing the content of the course, and gives handwritten notes within these typed notes during lectures. Made challenging material understandable. Would take another course with her without hesitation.
It was really hard to engage with the Professor and the level of difficulty of the course was harder than it should be. There was not a lot of communication with her when it comes to her lectures. Definitely would not take again a class with her
If you take a course with her, be ready to like self-teach the content using the textbook and internet. She is not a nice person outside of class & she does a very poor job at explaining things & her tests are very hard. Our class average for our first test was like a C+. I would avoid like taking any course with her.
rude and difficult to reach out to
Difficult professor
Very bad email etiquette.
Not the best at explaining things. Not the nicest person either.
I don't know why there are so many bad comments, Tian is a very nice prof. She has well-organized notes for every section, and tests are based on that. She provides detailed solutions to examples. Everything is clear in her class. I took my 1131 and 3330 with her and got both A+.
This prof is not great at all. Her accent makes it difficult to understand her which wouldn't have been a huge problem if she could teach, but she can't. Doesn't record lectures and only posts incomplete notes. Not accessible outside class and her exam was difficult because she included stuff she didn't teach. Steer clear from her if you can.
Very organized lecture note handouts to help follow along in lecture. Tests and exams are exactly what was taught in class. Also very nice and reasonable prof. English is not the greatest but shes aware and is willing to repeat or explain if asked.
I'm surprised by her ratings,it might depend on what course you take with her. She wouldn't just teach the concept but would do practice questions right after which were really similar to midterm questions. She does have an accent but she's still relatively clear. Anything else (50% final exam) can't really be blamed, its the same for all sections.
I had Yanhua Tian for 2131, her midterms and exams were extremely difficult compared to the textbook practice questions that were recommended to do. Everything I learned in this class was because I taught myself, she is very confusing. The only good thing about this class is that you can find the textbook online for free.
I did not like this professor. She was very difficult to deal with and was very bad at explaining stuff. Don't take her! If you took her, I send you prayer and positive vibe!
Horrible
This profs great. Goes at a good pace and explains everything really well. I actually understood the material really well because of her.
I don't know about her other classes but her MATH 1131 was great. Gave fill-in-the-blank handouts, and even though she's strict and doesn't post the completed note, she slows down in lectures if you ask her to and is still pretty nice. Problems from exams and assignments were directly related to the notes. Do the homework and you should be good.
Try to show up to every lecture since it is easy to fall behind in her class.
All the bad reviews had me rly stressed for this course, and I quickly realized this is a very easy class. Ignore the negative reviews, she has her own notes, and whatever she covers in her lecture notes will be all you need for hw, and everything you do in the hw will help you with tests. Very basic 'plug into formula' course.
I had Dr. Tian for both 3330 and 2131. I got an A in both. Her notes summarize the content very well, to the point that I only used her resources for both courses with only occasionally touching the textbooks. The only thing that I wasn't too fond of was the pop quizzes in 3330.
Didn't post full notes online, left blanks to make students come to class. Her explanations were not worth the time.
Uploaded unfilled in notes with lots of grammar errors and the lectures were not helpful at all.
Shes ok, ive been to 1 class for the test and she seems nice. Cannot understand her that well but the material isnt really difficult. Free marks for the webassignments, crowdmark assignments are time consuming but not hard either. Either hit or miss tbh but if you do the minimum homework you should be fine. But 50% exam is crazy.
I took MATH 1131 and 2131 with her as well. Excellent instructor - at the beginning of the term, she gives a 100+ page printed set of her notes, but you need to attend lectures to get the parts that she writes into the notes (important insights about the material, as well as worked problems). A pity there are no courses left I can take with her.
Take her at your own risk. Take her if you really want to self-study the whole course. Take her if you want to waste your money. Take her if you don't wanna understand anything from the lectures. Take her if you wanna have a prof who doesn't care at all about her students. Take her if you wanna be told to fk off from her office hrs.
Try your very very best to avoid her, she makes stats seem so much difficult but in reality it's not! You're going to have a miserable time if you decide to enroll in her classes, cuz simply she doesn't care about students at all.
I got scared when I saw her rate my prof. I enrolled late, so she was my only option. Every class she will go teach a bit of material and go through an exercise. She'll do this many times a class. She'll come around and give you good individual feedback. I barely had to study and did well. Her teaching style is very engaging.
Gives out unfilled notes, so basically attendance matters to write down your own notes unless you can get them from another classmates as she doesn't post the filled notes online. Tests are easy if you go to her lectures and write down notes/solutions and learn them as the questions are similar. Allows cheat sheet for both midterm and finals.
If you go to the lectures and do the practice question in the lecture, then you will be fine. The midterm and finals were easy, similar to assignments. She doesnt specify when the pop quizzes are so you kinda have to go to all classes. It is lecture heavy, but the content is pretty simple and straight forward if you follow her.
The professor is better than most professors who teach this course. Although she has an accent, if you follow along to her lectures, you will easily be able to pass the midterm and final exams which are similar to the assignments she will give you. I would recommend this professor.
Just horrible. She never replies to emails when it's important or when its course regarding. She gives so much work without even thinking. For example, when we came back from the strike she expected us to finish 3 assignments, 1 midterm, and a final (worth 50%) within 3 weeks. While only completing 30% of the course.
Does not respond to emails, I had to inquire about an extension repeatedly, and she only replied once I asked to talk to someone who cared more. Does not give accurate preparation for tests, last test had 4 questions and most people stayed the whole hour. The strike seemed to make her give up entirely. avoid at all cost
Took her sats course in the summer, attended every lecture for bonus in participation, her tests and final was exactly like how she did in class. She has an accent which is sometimes hard to understand but she is always willing to clarify if you ask. Just go to class and review the examples done and you'll ace the course.
Anything > this prof. Not available outside of class, not flexible. Reads off slides. Only there for research. Impossible to read her note during class (which she wont post). You go to class, you cant understand what she's saying, you cant read her handwriting, and on top of this she 100% doesn't care at all about you or your learning.
Very much test heavy, no leniency with assignment deadlines. Will not give any bonus under any circumstances. Had to teach myself most of the course content.
She's just OK. Bonus assignments were helpful and WebAssign was fine. However, she does speak unclearly and can be hard to understand. Does not reply to eClass questions, doesn't post notes either. If you rely a lot on the prof and lectures, then don't take her classes. She didn't give enough time for midterms, and isn't flexible with deadlines.
Had to rely on textbook. Posted notes and lectures were not good enough. Professor was not accessible outside of class.
She is very organized. The fillable lecture note is helpful to track everything. She gives many examples in class. I found the way she explains is easy to follow, and I honestly learned a lot from her class. If you show up and keep up with the teaching, you will get a good score.
Professor Tian has a specific teaching style, but if you engage with it, the class works well. The lectures are worth attending, and using resources like unstuckstudy alongside the textbook can really help with study prep.
Very disorganized. Had to rely on textbook readings.
She is nice, and good in teaching. Very clear explanation. She did summaries for each chapter, which I found very helpful. Great experience, nothing to complain
The first midterm was a bit tough, but the second one and the final felt pretty fair. The pre-posted notes really helped. The lectures were informative. Make sure to do the practice questions. It was a great experience.
Very clear explanations. Easy to understand and follow. I like her class.
Content isn't too hard, if you rely on textbook. However, it is a nightmare dealing with anything outside of class. If you need to email for whatever reason, she's quite unresponsive and doesn't seem to answer questions directly. Unless you never need to email a professor or contact them outside lecture, stay clear.
