Good luck if you have her. I genuinely find myself learning more about the class when I do not attend and I just read the textbook. In class, she moves too fast and instead of explaining difficult concepts, she says to read the textbook. When asking questions in class to clarify some concepts, her answer always makes me more confused than I was.
Would not recommend. She is not understanding in anyway. Not clear and makes everything so much more confusing than necessary. Cannot answer questions clearly. Does not seem to care.
Horrible professor. Does not care about students, moves too fast in class, you don't even really have time to take notes in her class. This is an introduction class and she doesn't teach it like one, she's rude when you ask for help and doesn't even actually teach you anything. If you take her class, be ready to teach yourself everything.
Horrible professor! She is teaching an introduction to chemistry class and acts like we are chemistry geniuses. She is supposed to teach basic chemistry and does not teach at all. She puts questions on the board without teaching you how or even what the question means and expects you to know it. Do not recommend taking any class of hers!
Be prepared to teach yourself, she does not seem like she knows what she is doing ever. She does not help, sends back rude and passive emails. Her tests are opposite of what she says to study. Better off getting an education through khan academy to maybe pass this class.
The averages for her first two exams were 48 and 52. She is a very smart lady, just doesn't know how to teach or speak English well. You're better off skipping her class and only going to SI sessions.
Hundreds of students started this class. We are down to about 40 that actually attend. She simply doesn't care if we pass. Doesn't seem to care if we go talk to her after class or not. Isn't helpful. My outside tutor taught me more in one afternoon than I learned from her the whole semester. Worst professor I've ever had. Maybe 10 will pass.
She does not teach the concepts very well and moves very fast. She also won't stay behind to get questioned answered. Basically, a cliff notes version of the book so not worth it.
She has very tough exams. They are mostly free-response questions, with just a couple multiple choice questions. You have to be very confident with the concepts to pass the exams. There are 4 exams and homework, and the homework is weighted about equal to 1 exam. Reading the textbook and doing countless practice problems is essential.
This class is pretty tough she doesnt really explain the lectures so you can pretty much just read off the power point and youll be fine. If you do have a question though she will help you if you ask. All the test are multiple Choice, but there is no extra credit. Overall youre going to have to teach youre self, and theres a lot of homework.
Terrible professor who shouldnt even be considered a professor. She does not teach; the lectures are word for word from the textbook, and she goes through the topics with no depth. Her class is a waste of time, energy, and money.
Lecture barely get into detail. She goes way too fast not really making time for questions. Was dismissive when I asked for help. Tests, homework, and lectures are wildly inconsistent. You will teach yourself from the book and online with this professor. Worst professor I have taken.
Doesn't care about her students what so ever
Be prepared to fail. This professor doesn't teach and has left class because her students weren't getting it. I have an A+ in my lab for this class and am failing her lecture.
She's rude when you ask her questions and talks down to you. Didn't give us any study material and told us to do the practice problems in the textbook but there are no answers so I don't know if I'm ever doing them right. Don't take her class, it'll ruin your GPA
She does not care about her students whatsoever. She's extremely rude when you try to ask questions. Lectures, homework, and tests are very inconsistent. Does not teach and straight up left lecture one day because we did not understand lecture.
I have never taken a worse course. She does not give extra credit, barely has any grades, does not curve grades, and does not help when you ask for it but instead gets annoyed and gives you a passive aggressive comment. I go to EVERY SI I can go to because they teach me more than what I "learn" from lectures. She does not teach!!!!
She teaches off of the textbook and literally reads off every line. You can tell she is a very smart lady, but her "teaching" does not help you at all. She does not curve or give extra points whatsoever. If you forgot to put the electrons on an element, the whole thing is wrong. She will ruin your 4.0 GPA. She is also a very rude professor.
If you have to take OCHEM at Texas Tech, do NOT take Dr. Xu. She lectures straight from the textbook and goes super fast. She's difficult to understand and you cannot read her notes. OCHEM is already a difficult class and Dr. Xu makes it 10x harder. The only thing I learned was when I went to SI sessions.
I would not consider her a professor. Her lectures come straight from the textbook, and she does not bother to explain the material.
Professor Xu is not a good professor. She is a very tough grader & doesn't give extra credit which is very annoying for a class of this difficulty. Her lectures come straight from the textbook and don't go in depth. Doesnt care about her students, people ask for help she is dismissive. Once she walked out of class because students didnt understand
WARNING!! This class is supposed to be hard, but she has taught me very little all semester. My tutor, who i have once a week, has taught me more in depth, but I still am not passing her course. She does not answer questions w/o an "are you dumb?" sigh or comment. She does not give extra credit. She does not answer emails with a concrete answer.
There is only one hour per week that she goes over things. This is online, mandatory, and incredibly glitchy. You effectively have to teach yourself the material. If you get stuck doing this class, do the Learning set with the reading, then the quiz and mastery. It will take you 5-8 hours every week to do the hw/teach yourself.
She is a decent professor. Her tests are harder than other professors because of her free-response sections. There is no extra credit. There are homework assignments for each chapter. I relied heavily on the textbook. She moves very fast during lectures and it can be overwhelming at times. Moving slowly through the textbook is the way to go.
Despite what everyone has said, I think prof Xu is a perfectly adequate professor. If you go to class and work out her lecture problems the tests are very similar. She goes hand in hand with the textbook and is willing to give you extra help during office hours if needed. Organic chemistry is a hard class so it is not easy to get an A with any prof
Every other O Chem professor at Tech has empathy for their students except Xu. Her lectures are x3 speed, she does not give out reviews like every other professor. Lacking in her email responses and praises only students who attend office hours, which are at a time that conflict with most peoples' schedules. No redeeming qualities, dont take.
Everybody complaining is just proving why OChem is a weed-out class. Xu gave exams which modeled the homeworks and her own example problems from lectures almost exactly so it was always easy to know what to study. Only issue I had is that she taught super fast. If you want an A, you MUST apply yourself and study.. people weren't ready for that.
Xu is not a good professor for organic chemistry, she is hard to understand and does not understand why you dont comprehend the material. She says in class after test if you thought the test was hard try harder. She does not give extra credit unless its in the test, but the extra credit shes given was stuff we havent learned.
This class felt unnecessarily difficult. She is difficult to understand. Her homework is worth more than the exams, homeworks are due on test days with a lot of chemdraw questions. Exams are 100 pts, including final, extra credit is 6 points on the exam if you answer all parts. No partial credit either. Take Dr. Mayer if you have to take OCHEM.
Do not take notes, but understand what is being said during lecture. Recall the information after class. Apply to HW until at least 70 percent of information is understood. Then do many practice questions from the book according to the chapters covered. Dr. Xu did a great job to prepare for the rigors of medical school.
Professor Xu goes way too fast during lecture. I found it much easier to read the textbook myself and take my own notes instead of going to class and taking notes based off her lectures. I taught myself everything in this course. Your grade is mostly based off of exams, so make sure you get good grades on the tests. No extra credit is avaliable.
I did not attend her class for half of the semester because I couldn't follow while she was teaching. I did, however, learn the material myself and was able to pass. If you can learn how to do the homework from the book, you're golden.
Dr. Xu was a fine professor. She was a little hard to understand due to her accent but it wasn't anything simply paying attention could fix. An A is defiantly possible through study and by showing up the the class. She curves tests if the average is low and offers extra credit. The low rating are just from people who stopped going to class. Show up
Not helpful in any form. Acts rudely when asking for help. Avoid this professor
This is introductory chemistry, and the material itself is very easy for chemistry, but needs you to apply yourself. Xu is not a very good lecturer and she never explains how or why you should do this, but you still should come to class and do the SI sessions and you will thrive. Just apply yourself and show up.
Professor Xu is not as bad as they say here. Her lectures are fast and she goes through a lot of content every time. Her tests are free response but very similar to the examples worked in class. Just review her notes and rework her examples and you will do good!
I had Xu for ochem and I loved her. She is super clear on what you need to know for tests. She goes super fast in lecture but posts the notes so Id recommend 50/50 of listening and taking notes and then finishing the notes when theyre posted. If you go to lectures and SI sessions youll get an A. All of her homeworks are unlimited attempts
She was not a good professor! I had to take her class again because I failed with a 69 tanked my GPA significantly. Her lectures are awful, she just reads off a powerpoint from a textbook. Your grade is based off you exams, does not provide extra credit nor does she curve test for you unless it's the final. Goodluck...
This professor give little to no help in the class. She only lectures off the slideshow. This class a weed out class because if you get behind you will not do well. The only grades in the class is the homework and the test, and there is no extra credit given. Also if you fail the final you can fail the class.
Dr.Xu is a great instructor for this course. She is patient, knowledgeable and explains everything clearly.
This is my second time taking Dr.Xu for 1301 and she was SIGNIFICANTLY better this second time. If you show up to class, stay engaged, do homework on time, and go to SI sessions for tests you will be perfectly fine. Her accent can be a little difficult to understand at times but you get used to it with time.
She was absolutely awful and not clear with any of the material.
If you are not great at chem and need more help than others. EVEN if you're good at chem. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I repeat DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. she will not work with you or explain anything. she reads the pp and lets you out of class without learning ANYTHING.
She is very difficult to understand and does not teach very well. You have to do a lot of work on your own outside of class to understand. Please to not take this class with her if you can avoid it. Very heavy on tests and Final. Does not offer much help outside of class. PLEASE TAKE IT WITH SOMEONE ELSE.
Kind of difficult to understand and follow along with. Lectures are completely necessary, most of the homework's allow unlimited attempts and will help you solve the problems.
She is a sweet person but as a professor she comes off harder to understand and the test reviews are far from the tests. mid to say the least
The homework has 10 attempts for each question but usually takes a while to complete. I had to reteach myself a lot of the material because she goes really fast during lectures.
Dr. Xu class is very easy. Her lecture attendance isn't mandatory, but if you attend class you will be set for exam as well as if you do homework. If you ever need help she responds to emails quickly and she is easy to understand. Her test are easy as well as the final, she lets you keep test which helps for final!
Dr. Xu is not a mean person, however, it's Chemistry and it's difficult to most. As long as you STUDY, and put in the effort, you can do great in this class. She does come off as mean & unapproachable so I didn't like that. Instead, I used other resources such as SI/tutoring which was helpful. I did like that this class preps you for Chem 1307.
Dr. Xu made everything clear about what needed to be know for exams, so make sure to study because the exams weigh heavily . Homeworks were easy and almost unlimited chances. Put in the effort and you will make a good grade
Pay attention and take tons of notes. You will fail if you do not study.
Dr.xu is very knowledgeable. She is clear and concise in her lectures and will tell you exactly what will be on your test. she gives practice exams that are VERY similar to how the exam will be like. moderate flow of hw Honestly, if u complete every homework assignment, study, and take the practice exams, you should definitely make ATLEAST a b+.
Don't get me wrong, Xu cares a lot about the success of her students, and is very kind, but for SOME reason it really doesn't click for anyone. Hw and lecture heavy. Practice exams this semester were only 33% related to the exams. Will be taking again for grade replacement. Take Mayer instead. Trust.
DO NOT TAKE. SHE IS TERRIBLE.
Anyone that's saying that she is bad is probably a C student and couldn't care less about the class. What got me an A without overexerting myself with this class was going to a large majority of lectures, going to 1 or 2 SI sessions before the test, and studying the practice test (which is essentially the real test). It is not a hard class.
DO NOT TAKE!!! I passed this class and I still would recommend another professor. NO extra credit, NO curve, and all open response exams. Take another professor, many give extra credit, curve, and use multiple choice.
Nice, but not a very good professor for such a difficult topic. No extra credit, almost all free response questions on exams, goes through materials quick in class, and does not provide help outside of class- unless you schedule an appointment. Had to take a bunch of SI sessions and watch videos to understand. Don't take if you struggle with chem.
This is my second time taking Dr. Xu, she is as worse as I remembered. Having her for 3305 is no joke. I haven't met a single person who has something positive about her teaching style and course structure. I have attended lectures, SI session, office hours, and yet will be having to retake this class. Please avoid taking her if possible!!
DO NOT TAKE!!! Insead take Mayer. 70% of every exam is free response when multiple choice is adequare and difficult enough. Very homework heavy as well, almost impossible to complete UNLESS you're a Biology major. If you're Biochem, Chem, or ChemE, take the major's only section with Mayer.
Dr. Xu is very clear in what types of problems will be on the test. Just do practice problems & work on memorizing rxns & you can get an A it is not unattainable. One or two SI session before exams will help clear up confusion. Her lectures are straight forward & teach exactly what you need to solve her exam problems. Definitely would take again
She spent a whole lecture getting mad at us for not answering one of her questions about a topic we hadn't gone over yet. DO NOT TAKE HER. I get where the nice ratings are coming from, but all of her lectures are just going over examples that can be found in the textbook. She explains NOTHING and the free-response has no partial credit.
Very easy class, she laid out everything for us to make it very clear how to pass and how to solve the material. One assignment every two weeks. If you skipped every lecture you could still check slides and understand quickly. Practice tests were very useful. They even provided scantrons for every test. Great experience.
Ochem is a hard class... do all the practice problems in the textbook (I know its a lot...), take hw serious, and her practice exams ... God bless those practice exams ... you can make an A in her class! You got this, I would take her again! She is straight forward (sassy lol), but she is also cool.
Dr. Xu is genuinely the best professor I have had. She explains everything so thoroughly in her lectures and makes concepts digestible. Do not get me wrong, ochem is a very difficult course. However, if you put in the effort and WANT to understand she is more than willing to help. She is so kind in office hours and loves to help students!
I truly enjoyed Dr. Xu as my professor. She explains everything thoroughly and provides you with practice exams that are VERY similar to her exams. Is her class difficult? Yes of course it is organic chemistry. The comments saying she is impossible are most likely C students that are used to being able to coast by. This is not a coasting course.
The class was hard but the professor taught great. It was very clear what was expected from us and what would be on the test. She also rounded our grade at the end. I would definitely take her again.
I loved Dr. Xu. She was a great professor and explained everything in great detail. I feel like the people who did not like her didn't go to lecture. She gives many hints as to what will be on the exam during lectures, and her reviews are very similar to the exams. Ochem is difficult, and I had to study a lot, but it is possible to get a good grade
If you go to her lectures and work out the problems with her you will pass the class! Complete homework to better get a feel for the exams. Exams are hard because only a few questions are multiple-choice, and the rest you must write out.
Dr. Xu is very clear and concise in what is expected in order to receive an A in the course. If you skip class, you will have no idea what is going on. Attend lectures, study her practice exams, and attend office hours if needed. She is very kind and willing to help students who reach out. She is great and receiving an A in this course is doable.
Put in the work for this course and your grades will reflect. Dr. Xu is very straightforward and gives practice exams that are almost identical to the real thing. I loved her and did not find receiving an A in this course very challenging. Utilize your resources.
Prof. Xu is great if you are the type of person who just wants to gain the information and not try to build a bond with the prof. She is very clear on what is on the tests and how they will be graded (3 midterms and 1 final). If you take notes you will be okay, I did minimal studying outside of class and did great because I followed what she said.
If you don't do good on the exams, you're screwed.
Dr. Xu is not someone I would recommend especially if you are not strong in the chemistry subject, her lectures are pointless to go to because 1. she's hard to understand and 2. she goes so fast and doesn't show how she got the answer. Beware of her grading
Go to lectures! Attendance is not mandatory, but going to class every time is what helped me pass. She is very clear about her expectations, but it is a tough course regardless. Her practice exams are very similar to the actual midterms, so study off of those. They are same structure and very similar questions.
really bad, if you don't do well on the exams, you are screwed. she doesn't give ANY extra credit except for once or twice if you get a correct answer in class. also no test makeups, even if you missed one for medical reasons. she also reads off of slides so if you don't learn well that way, don't take her. if you do take her, GOOD LUCK.
IF YOU ARE PRE MED, LISTEN UP! I am pre med and i took Dr. Xu for ochem 1, she is great. Obviously, it's a difficult course, but I feel she does a great job at explaining everything. My biggest tip of advice is these three things: 1- attend EVERY lecture 2-begin the homework right after class while it's still fresh on your mind 3- go to SI sessions
she is a good professor but the tests are open ended and very hard to get a 100% on, if you think you are going to get an A, think again!
This is a very difficult professor to have, if you are not too strong in chem then you should wait for another to be available. Extremely fast speaker, must attend all lecture, and I recommend buying the ochem text book and going to all SI sessions to have a better understanding of what she went over. Good luck and May god have mercy on your soul!
Xu is a difficult professor, but organic chemistry is difficult. It's hard to understand her, so a lot of effort is necessary in this class. Go to SI, read the textbook, study the homework, and do the practice tests. Studying extensively (hours a week) to get an A or B IS necessary for this course. You MUST know the information deeply. Good luck!
The teaching style of Dr. Xu is a mix of lecture and tactile learning. It is hard to write down what she says though because she moves through lectures quite quickly. Additionally, this class was so difficult because every time she said something important, it would click. Then, she would give examples that completely contradict what she just said.
Becoming a navy seal is easier than passing this professor class!!! Prepare to read your textbook on your own time and try recording her lecture she goes extremely fast. Test are written with little room for error, write too little or too much information points get deducted. If your pre med, no you are not after her course. GOOD LUCK!!!
Occasionally on the way to her class, I would cross the street without looking just hoping someone would hit me before i got there... even then I'd still be expected to make up what I missed from being in the hospital, but it seemed worth it.
Professor Xu is not a bad instructor as these reviews make her out to be! Ochem is a very difficult subject so obviously her lectures and the topics at hand are hard to grasp but it isnt her fault. She explains the topics well and gives detailed instructions. Just do your hw, practice exams, read textbook, and show up to class and you'll be ok!!
If I could give this professor zero stars, I'd do it twice. She belittles students, explains nothing, and somehow makes you feel at fault for her lack of teaching. Whether you pass, fail, or spontaneously combust from stress seems completely irrelevant to her. If you value sanity, pick literally any other professor with a pulse.
Take Dr.Mayer or Dr.Sari if you want a better grade. You will learn more in this class tho. Do the homework BEFORE class! The exam review: study it like your grade depends on it. Record the lectures, she goes fast. Try to get the XTC even if you sound dumb. Exam is 70% free response so good luck. The A is possible but not easy.
This course wouldn't be so bad if the professor was better. Even with all of my effort: going to class, doing the homework, going to SI sessions AND the learning center... it was not enough for this woman's class. I'd sooner step into a gladiator arena unarmed or jump through a ring of fire over shark infested waters than take this class again.
Do Not Listen to the ratings that state that the professor gives you everything that is on the test, because that is literally their job. It is the same as stating that I should have passed this class if only I had downloaded a new brain called brain 2.0 for better note memory. Be aware, when taking course to video record lecture and buy textbook.
If you have the option to choose another professor, I strongly suggest you do so, but if Professor Xu is your only option, as it was for me, then my advice is to study a lot on your own time. The best ways that helped me were reading through the textbook, redoing homework, and studying the practice exams. Passing is possible if you study hard.
Go to every lecture and take notes. When studying, look at both the textbook and your lecture notes and take extra notes comparing the two to each other. Study the practice exam, most exam questions are the same just a different version of the question on the practice exam.
