Does not speak English properly !!! You spend more time trying to understand what shes saying opposed to actually trying to understand the physics, which is so poorly explained its not even worth trying to understand. Basically just reads off the slides and she zooms through them and doesnt post most of the slides.
She is horrible at explaining concepts. She seems very confused all the time. She has really poor English which doesn't help. She mumbles and occasionally gets quieter when she talks. Would never recommend to anyone. The difficulty is a 4 because you have to learn everything on your own.
Can not understand a word she says. Not really sure how she got the job of teaching this course because she doesnt know what shes doing. Half the time shell start explaining what she did and then it turns into a mumble because shes not confident in her work. Just a bad experience all around.
She's difficult to understand at times, but after a while, you get a bit better at being able to know what she's saying. She takes the time to go through each example fully, so if you pay attention to what she's doing you'll be able to figure everything out. She's the most caring professor you'll have however, she truly cares about her students.
She seems like a nice person but that doesn't make up for her bad teaching. She mumbles and rushes through important examples. She doesn't provide additional information on the material to help you understand. And she moves so fast you have to take pictures of the lecture slides to write everything down because it won't get posted later.
Not clear, hard to understand.
She is a very kind and funny prof who does care about her students doing well. Can be a bit difficult to understand at times but if you follow the lecture slides and use the textbook to learn concepts that are unclear + yt videos, you'll be fine. Also had clicker questions.
She's a nice lady with thick accent. However, she's very poor in English, and can't explain anything. All you'll get in class is notes with few examples. This course is recommended if you can read profs' mind. Otherwise, NOT recommended! You might get low a grade because you'll fail to understand questions in exams.
Absolutely terrible. Can not speak English properly. When writing down examples or explaining something, you have to figure out what she's trying to say, then translating it to English which you can understand, then finally writing it in your notebook before even starting to understand the physics. She is the worst prof that I have EVER.
She mumbles and has a hard time expressing her thoughts. If you are unclear about a topic I would suggest going to the textbook or online. Midterms were really straightforward!
Opted to do purely asynchronous lectures rather than actually lecturing and engaging with students. Seems to be using online schooling as an opportunity to work less. Her English language skills are underdeveloped for a person in her role as a communicator of complex ideas. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES IF YOU CAN AVOID IT.
I do not like to judge lecturers, usually I may be more lenient or nice towards the feedback, but her? It's hard to explain. Opted for recordings even when majority of the class asked for live lectures, and she read off the slides too. I ended up reading the slides or videos she post and never need to listen to her. Exam's WAY TOO HARD too!
I usually never have bad things to say about my profs, but she is the worst teacher I ever had. Do not take her class... She copies the text book and her lectures are boring. You will be spending hours reading through text book and trying to understand materials.
Doesn't teach anything, bad English. All clickers questions can be found online. (Ur welcome :) )
She is a decent teacher, opposed to some of the other reviews her english is absolutely fine. Nothing too special teachers the material. Assignments are often way easier than the tests so the tests are pretty difficult.
Her lectures are quite dull and she can be quite argumentative at times. Her English is passable but not ideal for a university professor. Additionally, she seems to put no effort into developing her iClicker questions she uses in lectures, and the answers to those questions can be found on Google easily. Would not recommend
With a degree already, and about 6 years of university experience, she is the worst prof I have had. She has terrible communication. She is rude to students. She makes important announcements in video recordings only that are easily missed. Skips lectures and uploads recordings without notice. She does not explain anything well. Find another prof.
I understand the students who don't like her, she is a tough grader and Her exams seem to be SO HARD but after having the solution, I always get mad at myself. Overall I enjoy her classes. Sorry Guys!
Shes a very tough prof. Her lectures really dont explain a whole lot, but the material isn't incredibly hard. Her biggest flaw besides her lectures are the tests. You have little to no clue what to expect which makes the stress 10x worse. From unfairly long tests to very open ended questions she expects a lot. She gives little chance to succeed.
Worst prof I've ever had. When asked questions in class she either gets confused and gives a bad explanation or answers back very rudely. It seems like she barely even knows what she is teaching and she doesn't want her students to succeed. On top of that you never have any idea of what is going to be on the tests. Avoid her
She was just plain awful when she invited me for dinner but she was grading my performance in the bedroom, please don't rat us out were together now.
Yas will never answer any student questions & only solves questions using r as she doesn't seem to know how to actually do it. She reads lecture slides WordForWord making me think she doesn't understand the course as she won't answer questions inside or outside of class. She is aggressive and mean to students & is a terrible person let alone prof.
Yas is personable and friendly but is not a good professor by any means. Yas reads off of prepared slides and is unable to answer student questions. Her tests are difficult and focused on obscure things that are mentioned once and never practiced. Yas completes her job at minimum expectations, don't expect any help, don't expect to learn anything.
Do not take a class with Yas Yamin as it'll be the worse class you'll ever have at UBCO!!!! She is rude, doesn't answer questions, the assignments and labs don't match anything on tests, she give no practice questions and will not tell students what topics to study for a midterm. She gives no part marks for anything. I would give a 0/5 if possible.
Avoid her class. Yas consistently makes errors in her notes and in her speaking. She rambles on and students ask so many questions that she walks up to you and spends so much of the lecture individually answering your questions face to face. The test material relates to nothing in the lectures, labs, or textbook. Run away people. Trust me.
She is a liar and her exams don't cover concepts focused on in class. She makes promises to do midterm/final reviews or to upload a practice final but NEVER did. She didn't upload midterm review session answers (done by TA) outside of class until after the midterms and then told me privately the answers were wrong yet has not taken them off canvas.
TERRIBLE prof! STAT230 is NOT a hard course & easy to get the hang of with the right resources and practice. Unfortunately, Yas doesn't test anything she teaches & instead gives tests with completely unexpected material. I'm unable to understand how a person like Yas is able to keep a job at UBCO as she is lazy incompetent & doesn't answer emails.
Please avoid this professor. She does not teach in class and instead expects the students in the class to answer the questions of others. Additionally. Tells students to "stop wasting her time" and laughs at them when they ask a question or do not understand a concept. Lastly, she does not check her email or respond to any questions.
Yas Yamin does not deserve a job at any educational facility on the planet. Refuses to answer any students questions and instead laughs at them. Does not do midterm or finals reviews. Does not explain what will be on midterms and final. Promises certain things will be on the midterms/finals when they aren't. Do not trust this "professor".
STAT 230 is difficult, there's a lot of material. Work on labs, lecture examples, assignments. Review sessions are helpful too. Yas is OKEY, she uploads the slides but not her notes which really sucks.
Save your time and money.
She is a WH0*e
She does so many useless stats proofs and throws formulas that in no way help me understand stats more but you better write all 1000 down on your cheat sheet otherwise you're hooped for the midterms and final. I didn't mind her all that much though, she's better than some profs I had here. She has a rather entertaining personality.
has final out of 40 with final being worth 40%, so 1 % lost for each mark
While the content of the class isn't particularly tough (if you study just for 2 days before an exam you will get an A), the prof decides to make it harder to screw students up.She makes students feel horrible if they ask questions in class and her grading is really vague. She is rude and she doesn't teach well. Pls have a good cheatsheet for exams.
Yas is a great prof! She genuinely cares about students asking questions during class, and her responds are always polite. She is also approachable during office hours. On the flip side, there is a huge difference between her practice questions and the actual exam, her exams are much harder. Make sure to do more practice questions on your own.
STAT 230, in material, is not a difficult course by any means. Yas is skilled at making easy concepts seem tricky. I never benefitted from attending her lectures since they'd only serve to confuse me on topics I understood through her poor explanation. Avoid if you can, and if you cant, go through the material on your own time.
Stay away if possible- not as good of a professor and could change teaching ways and even the exam styles. Hated stat going in and still have the same views.
Avoid this prof at all costs. Worst prof I've ever experienced
A lot of people seem to hate this professor, but I found that by attending lectures and asking questions she can be very clear and helpful.
Amazing lectures & charismatic during class
poor marking
Don't know how she got hired by UBCO , even a tuition center wouldn't hire her
Quite atrocious!
Really uncaring and cold individual
Really has no know idea of what she is doing which results in her mumbling her way through every lecture
Abysmal to say the least
This "prof" will give you nightmares
awful .....
worst experience ever
shows how anyone is hired by UBCO
horrible experience :(
Really has no idea what she's doing
absolutely miserable
mumbles and fumbles her way through
the worstttttt!!!
worst "teacher" ever , don't know how ubco considered her to teach
Cares about her students & does lots of examples in lectures to help everyone understand the material. As long as you have a decent background in calc 2 you'll do fine in the course since most of the questions just involve interpreting the area under a probability distribution.
Her "teaching" gave me unregulated cell growth in the brain. She is tied for the most unlikeable person after 2001. The fact she is a professor gives me hope for my dream of being an astronaut.
She rambles in class and makes you live through your highschool trauma. Had two classes with her and class average for both is around 60 percent. If you want a good grade, don't learn from her
Calls students out in the middle of class and makes fun of them. Rambles. Doesn't share class notes. Test heavy. Half the class doesn't show up. Don't take this teacher for the life of you.
Knows how to teach: nu uh Knows how to answer questions: nu uh Exam questions are clear: nu uh Provide class notes: nu uh Makes fun of student not understanding stuff: Yuh
RUN! She is by far the worst and most infuriating "teacher" at UBCO. Her midterms are confusing and she barely gives you partial marks. She is incomprehensible and will call you out and make fun of you for not knowing the answers. I also have her for DATA 101 and she is just as bad. My advice is to drop her class and switch into another section.
This prof is awful. She's condescending, forgetful during lectures, lacks structure, and overcomplicates even the simple things. Exams cover untaught material, with her claiming it's easy, so there should be no problem. ANYTHING CAN BE HARD IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. Heard she was fired from a previous job for being an unpleasant person.
the absolute worst "professor" one can imagine
I have never seen a professor in my life who would take away your calculator for someone else to use in a STATISTIC FINAL EXAM. That is WILD.
I had Data 101 but theres no option. I thought her teaching style was clear and concise, she always arrived on time to class and was always available for questions during office hours and by email. Genuinely a good prof, she just teaches a harder to understand class so she gets a bad rap but she honestly wants her students to understand and do well
genuinely cold and uncaring
So here's the thing about DATA101 with Prof.Yas, taking this course is a RISK. The course content is easy but her teaching and course structure makes it hard. Secondly, even if you study by yourself (slides+labs+assigns), the final(open book+HARD) will get the best of you. If forced to take, treat this course as a main one and attend all lectures.
SKIP THIS COURSE
When you see Yaas, you shouldn't say Yaa, you should say NOOOOOO
I had to take this class as a requirement. Honestly, I am glad that I somehow managed to pass the course due to the failure rate (tbh was also expecting to fail but clutched so hard for the final). Content is not easy but her lectures make it more worse and confusing. Did not bother to attend lectures and studied by myself. Avoid her if possible !!
Yas is an amazing teacher, especially for upper-level Physics. She takes care to write clear notes and welcomes questions from other students. Despite what others might say, my time in Yas's class has been really great. She's patient and makes learning enjoyable. I highly recommend taking her classes!
has no teaching skills!
Great Prof!
Took in summer. 30% Assignment (Only 4 assignments graded so be very careful for every question) 30% midterm (4/5 difficulty) 40% final (3.5/5 difficulty) Attendence was recorded Read the slides is enough to pass; but if you want to learn something, study from the textbook.
Despite a lot of these comments, Yas does care about her students! She happens to teach some tricky courses, and not too many profs are gonna be able to explain the content better. Yas also has great energy!
Completely indescribable class experience. Yas will call you out by name in a class of 100 and ask you an unintelligible question, then gaslight you and make fun of you in front of everyone. Easy content made infinitely more difficult by her "teaching". Typos in all the slides. At least I met my girlfriend in this class, so it wasn't a total loss.
I genuinely dispise yas yamin. She single handedly made my life a living hell this semester, she is widely known as a professor who does not care about her students or her course, her course is terribly structured, she can barely speak english or understand you. God forbid you have to take her class DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES!!!
never taught what's in the exam
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
If you do not ABSOLUTELY NEED this course do NOT take it. This class was incredibly painful, the teacher will call on everyone and ask questions even she doesn't know the answer to. The tests were extremely difficult especially the final there were questions that were many questions not taught in the course at all. This class made me go insane.
If you take this class you will be driven to insanity.
Idk why everyone is saying she calls on students. I took it this year and she did not do that. She only referred to people she knew, probably students that often go to office hours which dont mind being called out. She is a tough teacher, it's also a tough course. I went to office hour and she is a human being. She understood and adjusted my grades
COME TO CLASS. The people complaining about this are people who are scared from previous surveys, but she seemed to have changed. She has no tolerance for people that skip a class that is mandatory because obviously how would you know what content she will test? If you came to the classes, you knew the content of the exams.
Dr. Yamin gives clear lectures and her lecture slides are concise and easy to understand, so even if I missed something in class, her notes would guide me. The only challenge I faced was getting used to her style of questions in the tests, but she was also very kind to change the weight distribution and make the final easier than the midterms.
She CAN be nice, although very hard to understand. If you have a course with her that you don't know much about, DO NOT take her class. A lot of material was learned outside of class during my own time. Tests were hard, although the final was open book. There are many cons with her however she can prove to be caring and understanding at times.
Yas genuinely seems like a nice person, and I do like her as that - a person. As a professor however, stay far far away. Coming from a COMPSCI background, the way she explains computers is insane. Textbook is way better. The final exam is open book and VERY hard. Do not assume that notes + textbook will help you on the exam. Study like a madman
nicedcddcddc
She seems like a caring person, but avoid her as a professor at all costs
At the beginning of the semester, Prof Yamin was tough and difficult to understand in lecture, but as I got to know her through office hours and email, I actually found her to be deeply caring and accommodating. She surprised me by allowing me grace and support, and I think while she may not love lecturing, if you connect with her you can succeed.
Horrible prof. Teaches nothing in lectures, attendance is mandatory if you want credit for in class assignments. Would never take this class again unless you're comfortable with R studio and want to deal with tons of work.
Attendance is mandatory for 15% credit, lectures are unintelligible, slides are riddled with mistakes, and she speaks English at a 4th grade level. She likes to pick on students, and singled out a few that she knew wouldn't have answers and called on them consistently. My biggest regret in life is not dropping this god awful class.
I would not recommend this class. The tests were really hard even though it is all open book. She also doesn't teach well, she is just a voice in the background yapping about nothing. She will call out students randomly and make fun of you if you don't have an answer.
She is very distracted during lectures, your only hope is being proficient with R through self learning and to read and understand all the slides on your own because she just reads off them.
Just don't take her course, period.
The course is disorganized and lectures are hard to follow. The prof isn't great at explaining, there are no practice tests, and exams are tough. She's friendly and helpful in office hours. Attendance is 15% and helps your grade. Material is doable but not easy. Read the textbook, work hard—she wants to give good grades if you earn them.
hard to understand and went really fast
This is the worst prof I've ever seen. Took her for required math and it was the worst decision ever. She can barely speak English, it's hard to understand her. She makes a lot of mistakes and does fast lectures, she makes easy math look hard and long and somehow makes so many mistakes. She's not helpful at all.I don't get how a prof can be thisBAD
Have to take this course this year, avoid it at all costs.
She teaches nothing in class, but attendance is required, a total waste of time, wasting my money and my life.
Do not recommend. She has failed to teach a single thing. She overcomplicates simple concepts and breezes over things that require explanation. Every lecture I have been to has been vastly unhelpful in the completion of in-class assignments.
Even God cannot help you, so if you do this course, do buy a lot of liquor.
Horrible exams, open book but no textbook or notes can save you thru a 30 minute long exam with 5 pages. Lectures teach nothing. Good luck taking this course
Every time I would go to this lecture, I would make sure to drive with my eyes closed so I would crash before making it to class.
Hilarious prof, but gives very little time for many questions in all quizzes and tests. DEFINITELY go to the DRC to get extended midterm times and other help. If you're not good at the subject, you will likely fail under this prof.
I cannot learn in her class. It is so bad.
Worst class I've ever taken. Will call on you during lecture to answer her questions. Does not speak good english. Does not teach anything.
Extremely disorganized, unprofessional and overexplained simple terms while forgetting to mention important things. I genuinely have never had a teacher this bad. Don't even get me started on the midterms... if you know, you know.
I severely dislike her - Why is she even teaching? Doesn't know how to lecture and struggles to speak in coherent sentences. What she teaches in lecture never actually relates to what's on the midterms. Haven't even used my textbook.
Would never recommend this prof to anyone, not even my worst enemy. She is a nice person (I think) but is a horrible prof. She would belittle us and yell profusely at us during class. During out first midterm, she talked the entire time, was so distracting, was yelling at us the entire time, AND printed out the wrong test for the group assignment.
Disorganized, can't believe she's still teaching.
She's awful but just do the in class work. If you have learnt python or java fundamentals it will be easy. Object of class seems weird. IDK what I learnt and the purpose for it but I know how to use and code in RStudio. Do all the assimgents (3) and make sure u do well in 2of3 of the midterms(open book) so on the final you dont need to do amazing.
The material is straightforward, but she makes it harder than it needs to be. Her explanations are unclear, and lectures often leave everyone confused. You end up teaching yourself most of the content even though it should've been easy. Not the best if you rely on in-class explanations.
Terrible prof in general, likes to overcomplicate everything when it's simple. Avoid this prof is you can.
AVOID. AT. ALL. COSTS. Even if you have to take a class next term. You will fail any class under Yas Yamin if you do not self-study or if you are lacking ability in a particular subject. She doesn't even show up to class prepared (10 minutes late to first test) and blames her students for her poor teaching when called out for her mistakes.
I would not recommend this prof to anyone. Comes to class disorganized and mixes up our stats lecture material with her data class so its hard to tell what we are actually expected to know. As well the material she does teach "properly" ends up being so over complicated that simple concepts make little to no sense.
Avoid her whenever possible. The material she teaches is not difficult, but her poor communication skills make it so. Course structure is messy, with lectures being incomplete and assignments often containing spelling errors. If you do not have a background in coding or RStudio, do not take this class to learn.
I came in with a CS background and a genuine interest to learn R. Yas makes me never want to pick R up again. Lectures are useless, she rambles, slides are disorganized, and does all her work in console instead of an IDE making it harder to follow. Final is rough. Textbook doesnt help much. Avoid Yas if possible, self teach if you have to take.
Attendance is mandatory because otherwise people would just use the slides posted. insufferable attitude, she seems proud of the bad rep. final is SIGNIFICANTLY harder than midterms. almost considered asking her to reimburse me for the gas money wasted going to these lectures. would rather drag my marbles across a mile of broken glass than show up
Nothing but THE FINAL IS EXTREMELY SUPER FREAKING HARD. Without the final exam she would get 3.0 but she deserves 1.0 after the final. This is the most bad exam I had ever take, they totally don't know how to design a final at all.The midterms are super easy but the average is still around 60% i cannot imagine how low the average would be for final
Do not choose the professor if you get a choice! The final exam is nothing like any of the preparation she gives. She makes mistakes every class, and the students have to correct her. She does not use a microphone when teaching in a LARGE LECTURE HALL. She gets upset when asked questions. She over complicates basic topics. YouTube taught me more.
Don't for your own mental health...
For your own sanity, don't take this class. The final exam is brutal, with a 25-page booklet and not nearly enough time, especially after the exam time was reduced by 30 minutes. Teaching is weak, so you end up self-learning. Even with open book and unlimited cheat sheets, the exams are insanely hard and extremely rushed. Very high fail rate.
Go to the lectures, sit in the back, and don't ask questions cuz half the time she doesn't know what shes talking about. Unorganized, unprofessional, and unfair. Midterms were alright, but the final touched me. Left that final feeling like a wounded soldier bro. It was open book too. Such a messy course. Sucks that most people need this course.
For your own safety, do NOT take this course.
It's abundantly clear that she's ESL, her lectures are rambles, and you have to listen to the lecture while completing an assignment. The final was pretty grim. The review was only 6 min long and a girl a few rows back from me started sobbing ~an hour into the final. There is essentially no possible way to effectively study/prepare for the final.
Don't let the low reviews scare you off. Yeah the final was long but fair. Just grind the quizzes and examples cuz that stuff straight up shows up on the final.
107 LOW reviews could explain A LOT. Not just a tiny little bit of high reviews could change her reputation. She and her final exam sucks.
Very caring about her students, a great person but terrible teacher. She acts very disgusted or disappointed when a student asks a basic question and she has very little patience. The slides were very clear, and if you review the material before the class it will make a lot more sense, but don't count on learning that much from the lectures.
People say shes a good person but a terrible teacher, however I know damn well that a good person wouldn't shame her students for asking basic questions, or just genuinly trying to understand the course. She doesn't teach and shames those struggling with the course because of her terrible teaching.
Hard to understand lectures, all while making fun of students for not understanding certain topics before she even introduces them in class. I am sad for the future students who have to take this course
you guys ever see the michael jordan gif where he goes like "no no no no"? that should be you if you ever see this professor in one of your classes
Fine. But you have to learn to recap and reflect the concept in your own. It's not barely memorizing and copying codes but it needs you to apply into scenarios. If you don't figure out those codes, it is possible to think the exams will have lots of uncovered topics.
She is a super nice person and will take care of you as long as you put effort In her course , she has a different teaching style and you will have to give a lot of attention to this course and you'll be fine.
She is very caring. If you put in your effort on this course, you will definitely get a good grade.
Amazing teacher, super caring! She has her own style and gives open book exams. As long as you put in the effort, you'll be totally fine in this class.
Best prof ever! I'd honestly take any class she teaches.
The final was tough, more about understanding the concepts than just coding, even though it was open book. But honestly, the class isn't that hard if you wanna pull an A.
mean, unhelpful and a very bad teacher. She does not teach, she just reads material doesn't explain and then calls out a student and clowns them in front of the whole class before moving onto the next thing and starting again, and she is hard to understand. INSANE final exam, left pages blank, so random. Tests on things she talks about one time.
Great professor, great course, would take again!
Very hard, and rude to her students. Final is impossible.
She is very caring. Make sure you have a neat cheat sheet for the final exam, it's open book, but you won't have time to search for all the answers in the slides
Don't take this class if you like your mental health. Missing a class puts you so behind, she just writes the textbook on the board and expects you to understand without providing ample practice problems or covering each topic with enough depth. Much harder questions on quizzes than what was every mentioned in class.
Super caring!
Taking a class with this prof made me doubt coming back to school was a good idea. This is my second Uni degree and third overall post-secondary experience, and I have never had a prof that has cared less or done so poorly at conveying even easy material. This is high school Math, and I needed to rely on outside tutoring and online to get anywhere.
If you see this in time, drop the course and re-register with someone else. It is really sad to go through an entire semester and spend money on a course where it doesn't matter to the educator if you learn or not. She does not answer questions respectfully, which makes it hard to clarify. If you're lost, it's hard to catch up.
It is possible you will pass this course, but it may be through 'strategic grading'. If the class was doing bad, we got extra marks to bring the class average up, but then we moved on to material without having a good foundation. You can pass the course, but it's very hard to learn from this prof. The classroom environment could get hostile.
