He does what he can in a group class. Just make sure you show up to class and take notes. Homework is very important too.
This guy is very difficult. I did great at first, but went downhill, and ended up with an F. He says he tries to fail his students to keep them motivated. Better off paying the extra $650 and take it with Frank Andrews as a continuing studies course.

Stop complaining....got a 78, 49, 48, 49 on tests....he dropped the lowest....gave 20 pts extra credit, just do all the hw!!! Ended up with a B...are you serious....3 40something grades...and still a B....class is fine
good material.. learned a lot. pretty difficult and intimidating as a prof
Considering the fact that he teaches to the masses, he is MORE than fair. If you ask for help he or his TA and the tutor are ALL excellent. He definitely knows his stuff. If you study, do the HW-you CAN do well in his class!!
yes very difficult and hard subject in a huge class but if you go and do hmwk it is fine and you learn alot. he is willing to help if you contact him and he is very clear and thourough
Took 2-credit MBA class - great prof. This guy knows his stuff and has practical experience - a rarity with most academics nowadays. Didn't just teach the material - he told us WHY it was important. Attend all lectures and do hw = A!
he's a hard grader and a hard professor.
Watch out for his exam questions, because the answers will be close in range.
Very difficult to pass his class. I attended every single one of his classes and got extra help but his tests are extremely difficult. Also very hard to understand his explenations of how to do problems. Study hard!!!!!!!!!!!!!I failed.
Took forever to grade, boring lectures, boring casework. Still, lets you have a crib card during tests.
very unclear
Easy Class. his exams are strait from the problems he asigns. HE TELLS YOU WHAT'S ON HIS EXAMS.. I hardly studied or did the HW and I still get 90's on his tests.
YUCK! Terrible teacher. You can't understand a thing he says.
I liked him. I think he is a nice guy!
needs to use more examples and not just read off sides
Very unclear and does not make an effort to help you understand or even pass the class.
Don't think he taught at all! There were very simple concepts that he somehow made confusing and impossible to understand. Seems lika a nice guy and I think he tried to help, but didn't really answer any questions. Just said do the problems. Would not take any classes with him again.
He is a great professor. Everything was straight forward. Just take good notes and study your butt off and you will pass. This isn't an easy A but it is very feasible. Its also helpful to have some one else in class to study with so you can work out problems together!
Lectures are very unclear thanks to a confusing teaching method, a thick accent, and a lack of understanding of how to use the microphone correctly. Any questions can be directed to his TA who will gladly ignore you. Centers for Learning are your only salvation, don't expect any help from this guy.

If you can get over the accent, it's really not that bad. Do the HW & practice exams. Cheat sheet is KEY! He tells you what will be on the exam, just make sure you understand how to do it. TI83 basically does at least one exam for you. He gives an EC assignment in the end, which is worthwhile.
Not clear at all. Took online class and will never take another class with him. I hope UMass Lowell brings in another teacher and put him in research etc where he does not have to teach.
This guy was so unhelpful for the online class. No matter what he says about studying the book, don't bother. Do HW then walk away from the book. Learn his way of doing things because thats what will be on the tests.(Class notes, Lectures,Etc.)Once you figure out that his tests are on class material class is Soooo Easy!!!
The only class I've EVER dropped!!!
Hard to understand and his lectures are horrible.....UMass needs a new Finance Instructor.
Really bad, he trys to make traps on the exams. Doesnt realize most students have upto 6 300 and 400 level classes and cant waste all semester worrying how he will screw you over on the tests. The TA is helpful GOTO HIM. BUY THE FINANCE CALC.
he way too hard.sets up traps for the exam..GOTO the TA (sandeep)he is the guy who can get u through this class. sandeep is an extrmely helpful guy.he should be the guy who should teach the class and NOT Puri.
goes tooo fast. financial calculator is a must. go over his notes that is if are able to copy it on time. His TA Sandeep is the best bet. Just soooo nice and helpful. Its because of him i am passing this class. i think i have acrush on him ....
Sandeep is God... most helpful TA ever
this is college, and classes shouldn't be cake. this class isnt that hard and he is very reasonable and doesnt trap you on exams, these other people are just idiots
well traps on the exams are common. although if atend all clases and study the notes u can make it with a B. Oh yeah Sandeep is really helpful. the guy has soo much patience.one time he went over the cost of capital question with me 3 times. hard to find such people. his right dimple is sweet.
hey guys,i heard sandeep is graduating next semester.last chance for ppl to get lucky with Puri.Take his course in spring.trust me its worth it when sandeep is around.
This guy is the man! His notes are online, so if you listen in class you don't take notes (lets you listen over his accent). Grading is fair. A lot of studnets do not like him, not sure why. BUY A FINANCE CALULATOR and the class becomes a breeze! You can miss a class here and there, and doing hw's is good idea.
A lot of you make valid points. However, most of the points are about the class, or about Sandeep. Business finance isn't that bad in itself. Sandeep is really helpful. Those points are settled. With this being ratemyPROFESSOR.com, I have to say that Puri sucks. He won't help you at all. His teaching style is terrible, and students don't learn.
He's not as bad as everyone says. Make sure you can do all example problems online and you will easily ace the class. Lectures aren't that helpful, but the material is simple if you practice.
I was scared to death of this class, but I ended up with an A. Puri is a really nice guy and if you wanna ace every exam go see the TA. He gives out practice questions that are almost identical to the actual exam
Not very easy, but I hope you do your HW. That will help you a lot on the exams. Also, he's put some previews and samples questions on his web. Please spend some time on them cus your exams will be almost the same exams that other students have taken over and over again. Financial calculator will help, but TI 83 also has some functions to get PV, F
He is one of those Prof's, that you have to engage in order to get something out of the class. He has a sense of humor if you get to know him. If you go to class prepared, and are able to pay attention, you will learn a lot. Print the notes to follow along, try to participate in class, BUY a FINANCIAL CALC, and see the TA for help.
If you are serious about a job in financial analysis, take his classes, do the work to get an A and you will be fully prepared. I had Dr. Puri in 1999 and have been working in Finance for several years. What I learned from his class was directly related to the work I performed on the job.
After failing my first couple of tests I learned that the test review is the most important thing in the class. Put everything from the review on the note card you get for the test and you'll be all set. After I did that I got 105's on the rest of my exams!!
I'm not one of those to constantly complain about professors, but I think this school needs at least one more Bus. Fin. professor. If you get any help from Puri, it'll be from his website. The only way to really understand and learn in this class is to go over the notes yourself at home. Going to class is practically useless. Just read the notes.
This is possibly the worst teacher i have ever had. The class is painful to sit through. The class is definitely not easy and it's more work than it should be. The homework is easy but when it comes to the tests its like everything is completely different. He doesn't do a very good job explaining anything.
A lot of little bonuses that he puts in to his grading. Drops the lowest grade, if you do very well on the first four tests, you don't have to take final, first question of the test is always what is the color of the exam, grades tests out of 105, etc. Just use his cheat sheet to the best of your advantage in do practice tests and you'll have a B++
How to explain Mr. Puri....boring, ridiculous ****....online homework is a pile of crap.....I've been in his class all of 4 classes and despise the man. Do not take unless absolutely necessary. His free online book is a pile of dung...
This is a required class for the COM.. you're better off taking it at another school because the exams are next to impossible and have NOTHING to do with what is gone over in class.
This class was very difficult, however it is not difficult to get a good grade if you go to class, take good notes and take advantage of office hours. EVERYONE that complains about this class obviously didnt put in enough effort.
This is college people. Classes are your responsibility. If you go to class, listen, take good notes, GO OVER YOUR NOTES REPEATEDLY, ask questions and do the work, this class is easy. Puri's very straight forward and knows his stuff. He's fair. If you don't work at it, don't complain that he's hard.
Hard class. This is probably one of the few management classes that a real effort is actually needed. If you are willing to put a good effort into learning the stuff, you'll do fine. The lectures are really brief and won't suffice for a passing grade. He will help you outside of class, so do that and you'll do fine.
He's a great teacher. If you do your homwork and go over your notes you'll do great. I loved his teaching method. I would highly recommend him.
this man wants to fail you. u feel like u know everything in class until you take the tests. OUCH. take this class over the summer where you can devote ALL your time only to this one class and no others.
Run for your life and stay away
Puri....stands for pure evil I would say. He is such a bad professor, his lectures are extremely unclear and unhelpful to the exams. Exams are online, notes are posted online. Don't bother going to class, waste of time. Read material on the site and you'll do fine.
I dont know what everyone is complaining about. I went to class on the first day and did not attend another one the whole semester and i got an A. all you have to do is go online, do the homework, and take the practice exams which show you how to find the right answers then use all of that as resources wehn taking the test ! its not that hard.
Why is he rated poor? I took the online class and I found the material hard, BUT he gave students opportunities to improve grades by allowing extra credit and re-do homework. He also responded to questions trying to help students understand the material. Do the work and its a good class, if not you are just lazy. Use Excel to your advantage.
I thought I was going to fail but I did the extra credit and redid the homework and got a B-!!!!! I can't recommend him however doing well made me extremely happy!
It's definietly not a class for slackers.. the material is very tedious but definitely manageable.. he offers a lot of help and extra credit, so if you have to take the class just use all the online study materials and you'll do fine
Puri does a good job teaching one of the more rigorous core courses in the BSBA program. He is always willing to help after class or during office hours. He also gave me several opportunities to improve my course grade.
Due dates changed often - including reducing time to complete work with almost no notice, really poor organization of materials, free online book is horrible, tests and assignments corrected weeks after completion - to late to revisit for exam, only help from puri was "try harder and practice" - not useful when you don't understand a calculation.
Dr. Puri is extremely helpful. He provides lecture notes and audio online for students to review. So, you dont even have to go to class if you are willing to review the lectures on your own. He provides practice exams and self-assesments which are very helpful for the exams. He is very clear and willing to answer question. what else can u ask 4
I enjoyed the class and felt that Yash Puri had a huge amount to offer his students. The course is very time consuming, and hard but at the same time inspiring. I recommend this course.(61.501 MBA)
I took Business Finance online so the accent didn't factor in BUT the professor was useless in answering questions. Another student and I basically had to teach ourselves everything. The tests were impossible and often not on materials taught.
This class is rough. If you are not good in math forget it. He absolutely does not help if you are stuck. Took it online and never answered any of the questions I would ask. I honestly can't believe I passed
I found this class to be interesting. He has many resources available to students, lectures, audio, practice exams, and everything online. He is very very helpful! I encourage u to set up excel spread sheets for the exams and u'll get all A's.
Puri is very arrogant and demeaning. He is not a good teacher. He only teaches to the exceptional students, but not to those who struggle in a subject matter.
I had to withdraw from this class to avoid failing it. I graduated with a 3.8 GPA, in the honors program, so I am by no means a slacker, but this class (Bus. Fin.) was impossible. I would have 10 pages of notes for ONE problem. His tests were comprised of about 15 of the same types of problems. Take this with another professor if you can!
DO NOT RECOMMEND! Professor has strong Indian accent, which I found difficult to understand. He is completley useless when it comes to giving extra help. He gives practice exams, but nothing from the practice exams or the class materials ended up on the actual exams! I had to drop this class and re-take it with another professor and got an A.
I don't see why people dislike him so much. It's not an easy class but it's not impossible either. If you can do the HWs you can do well on the tests. No attendance required and no book needed.
If you have half a brain, you can get an A in this class. You take numbers, plug them into formulas, and get answers. If you can't do that, something is wrong. Real easy class. You will never use the book. Use the free online one. Drops lowest exam, or if you're getting an A, you don't have to take the final. Oh, and his accent isn't a problem.
Avoid this professor. The pace of the course is too fast. If you want to do well you must teach yourself and dedicate a lot of time. Gave our class barley two days notice for a mandatory retake of the third exam because someone had cheated. Most students did not find out until the night before the exam.
Don't bother going to class. The homework isn't difficult. The exams are challenging, familiarize yourself with excel, it will make the exams so much easier. Make a good study sheet, and learn to use your Finance application on the TI-83. Homework: 20%. 4 exams :20% (lowest dropped). Final exam 20% (not dropped). Sometimes he does retakes on exams.
Avoid this professor at all costs. One of the worst at UML. Anybody who gives this guy a good rating is in a very small minority.
If you have a good knowledge of Excel and have a TI-83 then this class will be cake. If not, this class will be difficult. That's all there is to it. Oh, and if you don't understand a calculation, contact him. He's a very nice guy that's always willing to help you out.
His tests are hard and you are not given enough time. He caught someone cheating and threw out the grades of the entire class and made everyone retake it. he is hard to understand and is useless when explaining stuff. i dropped him but he is the only person teaching it the next two semesters so i am just taking it online with him. STAY AWAY!
Do yourselfs a favor and take Business Finance over the summer with Ravi Jain. Trust me it will save you from the headaches of taking Finance with Yash.
Took this class online...it was one of the most confusing online class I've ever taken. Only 3 tests that are timed; they are the hardest ques mainly from his online notes and require more time than given. Passed 1 test and failed the other 2 but did all hmwk and extra credit. Even tho I kept at it, he still failed me and many others 2. DONT TAKE
This class was not that bad at all. You do not have to go to class. He posts lectures online, and all the material you need is on blackboard. Exams are open notes, but you really need to understand the material. First exam, did not study, and failed. Second exam, studied, and passed with a 93. Put the effort necessary and you'll be fine.
I took this class as part of the online MBA program. He is a horrible teacher. He puts absolutely no effort into teaching the online class. The homework and exams were not based on anything in the text, (which was the worst text I?ve ever seen), or the notes he put out. The only way to learn the material is to listen to a recording of classes h
Honestly, if you're good with a TI-83 and writing formulas in Excel to make a cheat sheet (you can use any materials on the exam), you'll do really good. The 1st exam is BS, but the rest are easy. His HW's and Prac Exams reflect the actual exams. You're also better off reading his online notes rather than going to the lecture.
Teaches how to get certain answers, then when it comes time for exams the material seems like jibberish...does drop lowest exam, re-releases homeworks at end of semester, dont need the book, just follow along and go to ALL classes...let's you use ANYTHING for exams except communication with anyone else..
Overall, class was okay, everything is online. He gives you opportunities to boost your grade (extra credit, 3 attempts to homework, make-up exams if possible). Has supplemental material with whatever topic he's teaching. If you know how to operate a TI-83 and Excel, the class is cake
He is NOT THE BAD! The first exam consists of a LOT of thinking, be prepared! it is NOT EASY! think outside the box, if you don't you'll fail the first exam! everything else is smooth sailing from there! 93 and up on first 4 exams, u don't have to take the final!! DONT GO TO CLASS- just watch slides online!
Do not buy the book, you will never use it. Use his class notes and don't bother going to class. Create excel sheets for everything, every practice problem, homework, etc. Learn how to use ti83 finance functions. Class average will still be in the 40s consistently. Tricky on exams, know the practice exams solid, expect a C on the exams, trickster
1. Watch lecture online. Going to class is waste of time. 2. Do all problems on excel. 3. Bring said excel sheet to exam. 4. Profit.$$$ P.S. First exam is hardest. Cake-walk the rest of the way w/ an excel sheet.
Using a spreadsheet for each exam is a most. Not much of a teacher.
Don't take this professors class(Business Financial Analysis). Textbook is useless. He asks questions that he has not taught. Extremely rigid.
I just started this course and I honestly can not understand why there are any positive comments, I think he posted them. This guy will obviously be lousy. I have no choice but to take this course. May need to drop. Online notes are ALL OVER THE PLACE. Worst format I've ever seen. He assumes you already work in Accounting. Hoping to survive.
Very nice professor. Do not bother buying the book or going to class. Use blackboard for everything. Everything in the course is on blackboard. Make excel sheets before exams and use them on HW's and exams. Gives multiple attempts on HW at end of semester. Overall not super easy, but manageable.
Easy A if your good in math, you could have some problems if your not. Read his class notes they are helpful, and the textbook is somewhat useless. Knowing how to use MS Excel helps.
Doesn't teach well. Going to class is useless. Everything is online. Gives extra attempts on homework but tests are hard and different than what he teaches. Already dropped his class twice. Take this class with someone else if you can!
Took his online business finance class and it was extremely challenging. Like many others I also think his exam questions are much harder than any of his class examples or the hw. I was a near 4.0 student and this prof. severely dented my GPA. Avoid him at all costs and try to take this course with another professor at UML.
Do not take his online class. It's unorganized, confusing and his notes are a mess. The homework was easy but if you ask him for some help he can be short and unhelpful. His online lectures are filled with extremely easy examples and then he hits you with much more complicated problems for the exam, which he didn't properly prepare you for.
The absolute worst professor at UML. His exams are inscrutable death traps designed to make students fail. Don't bother asking for help, he'll just ignore you. Avoid Yash at all costs.
Terrible teacher he gives 1000 formulas and thinks just because his test are open notes they should be simple. Instead he makes them impossible by giving you examples in class that are easy making you think you know the material. His website is also not any help. Worst teacher at UML period.
Yash is a great teacher. His class is confusing but the thing that makes it worth it is that you take the exams with the notes and studyguides. If you do the work and organize studyguides its a B/A class.
Very good professor. Replied with details for every question that I asked. Class materials and problems are very well structured. You need to listen to his online video lectures and practice the problems, assignments, Home works, then you can do better in Exams.
Not as bad as everyone says. You definitely have to put in a lot of time outside of class. His exams are tricky but definitely not unreasonable. He's also a really nice guy and helpful if you ever need to go to him after class.
So Puri's class was hard, and you cannot get through it without help from someone who has taken it before. There is no book and class isn't required, but if you don't go you'll fail. All tests are online and MC answer, but it's impossible to guess. Really hard but I had to do a lot of extra work/studying because he wont help you
Graduate level course that requires high level of work. Take advantage of all tools provided; lecture notes, online recorded class lectures, self assessments, Q&A weekly chat hour, etc. TI83 or TI84 required, otherwise manual calculations will prevent completion of exams in time-frame allotted. Responds to emails timely.
The class isn't as bad as most people say. You have to put in the work and learn the materials, but it's definitely doable. Class isn't mandatory and honestly not necessary. I only attended on the days of the exam and managed to get an A
I took this as an online class. Professor Puri was very helpful if you attended the chats. Everything on the exams was given to us ahead of time. You need to do the assigned practice problems, self assessments and practice exams. It is an easy class if you put the effort in.
can't argue with what people are saying. Yash is terrible. He does not teach the material - he's only there pushing hot air. When it comes time to the test he does not care when half of the people fail, he then just scales. So could you get a decent grade yes - but what will you learn for the real world nothing take someone else
Yash just didn't seem to care whether or not you understood the material. He just drones on and on during class lectures and you basically have to teach yourself the course. If you can take this class with someone else I highly recommend doing so.
Attendance isn't mandatory, all tests are open notes but still can be difficult, strictly math based course
If you take notes and literally take the problems he does in class with you before the tests you'll be fine. The class is less complex towards the ending weeks. Don't buy the book.
His class is not hard. You just need to practice a lot. The first exam was the most difficult one but he will have the made up. It gets easier throughout the class. He gave extra credit at the end of the semester so try his class.
This class is not difficult if you can really into the sides. Attendance is not mandatory. Lectures are posted online. Open book exams... if you put effort in understanding the slides then you'll be fine.
Very helpful professor replies within 24 hrs with accurate examples.
The online class is pretty much do-it-yourself. Lecture notes and slides are all you need, don't bother buying the book. Invest some time in setting up really good Excel formulas and you'll be fine on tests. He does a lot of trickgotchas on the tests but he gives TONS of practice assignments which are a big help. You have to put in the effort
Don't bother with the book, he drives the class from handouts & slide decks. Tests are 25% trick questions that are so obscure that no amount of preparation is enough. You will need to teach yourself the material (DIY) & dedicate at least 20+ hours / week in studying to even hope in passing.
Finance with him is not easy but his expectations are very clear. Also, he drops the lowest test grade and students that did really well on the tests were exempt from final. Other than just doing the homework, you have to study. The book is super expensive and was literally not used at all. Do not buy it for FINA 3010.
Don't buy the book! You only need his notes, practice work for this class. LOTS of practice problems, but doing them makes you super prepared for the exams, guaranteed. Cares about his students as he gave multiple attempts to ace HW,makeup midterm, XC points to boost grade. Gave great problem guidance via email when you asked! Great prof, imo.
Don't buy the book, didn't even crack it open once. Yeah, the tests are tough, but he does a review session before each exam, and the exams are open note. Good Professor, good class. Would absolutely take again.
Take Yash if you can for FINA3010. All tests are open note/book, he does a review session for every exam, and posts plenty of practice material on blackboard. Not particularly an easy class, but a great professor to have. Saved my semester
Never felt so set up to succeed. You'll want at least a working knowledge of Excel. Homework and exams were all multiple choice; exams were open-book; and each assignment (including, amazingly, the midterm) each gave us multiple bites at the apple, using the highest grade submitted. He'll help you with homework problems if you're stumped.
I really enjoyed my class with Professor Puri and learned a lot. You do need to take the time to organize all the definitions and formulas, but once you do the exams and assignments are easy
Dr. Puri is wonderful. I learned a lot from his class. The material is tough, but he is readily available if you need help and really wants to see you succeed. He gives great notes and PowerPoint presentations to help you understand the material and gives you multiple chances throughout the semester to improve your grade.
I chose this class based on other recommendations on clear grading and plenty of chances to do well. While there is a lot of content which can be challenging, he gives you 3 chances to get a good grade on weekly homework, and plenty of time for the exams to complete your work. I had multiple questions on the content, and he replied very quickly.
Gives many opportunities to improve grades. Everything is multiple-choice. Stay organized with your definitions & formulas. Learn to do formulas in Excel; you don't need a TI-83/84 or a textbook! I recommend reading notes/slides in advance, THEN listening to the lecture afterward, he mentions extra tips via audio that help. Quick to provide help.
I can't understand what is wrong with people who have rated him negatively. Don't get me wrong, the class has a lot of work but the professor gives plenty of chances to improve your grade which takes the stress out. He is always available for answering your questions. He is courteous and kind. I wish every professor was like him.
Pros: Lots of chances to succeed, multiple homework attempts, midterm makeup, extra credit, great at answering questions. Cons: organization, handouts are either too verbose or too brief, too much in slide format. Textbook: Fundamentals of Financial Management, Concise Edition: don't bother, it's an awful textbook, completely unused, avoid Redshelf
Lots of material to cover in 8 week class. Don't buy the book, you don't need it. He provides lots and lots of notes and examples. Provides practice tests for midterm and finals. He has a quiz each week and gives you three chances to take them. Takes the highest grade out of the 3. He is very responsive to emails even on the weekend. Tough but fair
This is a tough one.! His exams and homework are challenging. The key is to spend a lot of hours doing his self-assessments and practice exams. Another thing to keep in mind is to save all your homework in a file where you can access during the exam for reference purposes. For a 2 credit course, he should definitely bring it down a notch.
He gives tons of homework but allows for retake to improve grades. He also provides tips on how to answer the homework which helps us better understand the concept and prepare us for the exams. For a 2 credit course, I would say this one is heavy since you will have to spend more than 8 hours a week to study. But I've learned a lot!
Online, asynchronous course. Clear, pre-recorded lectures cover same material as the notes he provides - so options for visual and audio learners. Lots of practice problems to help prep for both homework and exams. 80% of grade is midterm + final exam. Book is optional - I did not purchase. Very responsive to email. I did not attend chats.
I took 6 weeks online program with Professor Puri- in one words he is Amazing!! I hope every Professor at UMASS is like him. His lectures are very helpful. Gives lots of problems, review problems which is plenty to prepare for the MidTerm and the Exam. Very responsive to email. Chat attendance is not mandatory but very worthy. No need the textbook.
Professor has lectures about steps and are very clear but he speaks slowly, speed them up if you dont have the attentions spand and pause and rewind. Use the notes given each week they are set up like and excel sheet to help you lay out the function with TI calculator or EXCEL. I didnt do very was my own doing. Responsiveness its a 50/50 shot. GL
Enjoying this class.
The hardest of the introductory MBA courses. Probably would be easiest to take ACCT 5010 then this course, as it was incredibly difficult, but manageable. 1st week is by far the hardest, I felt like I had no clue what was going on. Do all class problems, SAs then Homework. SAs are much harder than tests. Build Excel calculators for everything.
I'm surprised by the positive reviews. I currently have what he is alleging is an A-, and of all of the homework and tests we've taken so far, I've gotten a total of 2 questions incorrect... throughout the entire class. That's an absurd expectation. To get an A, you'll need to get 100% on both exams.
Awful class! Inescapable obstacle course for a good grade, demanding ~20 hrs/week. 80% grade relies on 2*21-questions from Mid and Final exams, filled with confusing jargon and booby traps. Favors formulas and TI calculators over Excel. Lacks realistic practical application.
