Hes ok. His lectures are a little boring but he can be pretty funny sometimes. His midterm was a joke and he gave us the essay questions to the final and a review sheet for the short answers. You do two papers neither is hard. He laughs at himself a lot.
i survived his class but learned nothing. he is a 19th century japanese ecconomics systems major who doesnt really know about history except for china and japan.he just gives out outlines as notes and his tests are dumb.study hard or cheat ur butt off
If you go and talk to him, and let him think that you are interested he will grade you easy. ACT INTERESTED YOU WILL GET AN A
i was confuse out my ass. i had to drop the class. he goes of the topic and dosen't know what to teach or talk about. i had to withdraw from the class. open book exam but good luck finding it i won't take him
He is a very helpful professor. He knows his material but trying to present it to his students could be quite confusing. I also had him for HST 391. In that class it was also somewhat confusing. It took a while for him to settle.
He was funny the first week but then when I realized I wasn't learning anything, it wasn't so funny anymore. He's a nice guy who means well but he isn't clear when he teaches.
The funniest man who has ever lived! Tests are easy, gives the final questions out before hand. Loves Batman, once we started talking about who was better Batman or Superman and people were arguing, wasted class time for like 30 minutes.
i soooooooooooo freakin confusedddd omg never take him
Bad teacher, tests are long, bad grading. Do not take him
Ok, I thought that bc he was young, he would be a cool 106 teacher.. WRONG! He shows up late everyday, very unclear notes, the tests are long & opinion based w/ no chance of getting a good grade. He will tell you you're opinion is wrong even if You can back it up w/ facts! DO NOT TAKE
by far the worst teacher anyone can ever have! he is so unclear, uninteresting, and extremely unhelpful! if you want to sit in a class for an hour and tally how many times your prof. can say,"am i making sense" instead of teaching this is the class for you! overall he sucks ass!!!
WORST TEACHER EVER, NEVER TAUGHT A THING, NO ONE HAD A DAMN CLUE WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT. YOU NEVER HAVE TO GO TO CLASS. HIS TEST NEVER ASK QUESTION THAT CNA BE ANSWERED FACTUALLY RATHER THEY ALL HAVE TO BE ANSWERED IN HIS OPINIONS. WORST EACHER EVER
He was terrible... Horrible
I learned nothing from this class. He confused me so much.
this guy is the worst teacher i have ever had...dont take him
WORST EVER!!!!! AHAHAHA I DREADED THAT CALSS EVERY DAY!! IT WAS THE WORST...he thought he was funny but he wasnt and he confused me like whoa

Nice guy, but not very clear sometimes. He'll help you out if you have trouble. Loves to talk about nerdy tv shows.
Good teacher if you are interested in the subject. Just do the reading and you'll pass.

I absolutally loved this class. He made it fun and it was very interesting. The stories were grade and were an asset to the lessons. I highly reccomend this teacher to anyone. 4 tests a year plus a final, drops lowest test grade. one 7-10 pg paper, one map quiz
The most disorganized man in the world! Doesn't seem to have a handle on the subject matter either! Starts class late, ends class late, and gives an awful lecture inbetween! I was told not to take him, but I'm really interested in the subject, totally not worth it! Take another Professor!
He is a really good teacher..ull pass his test if u do all of his practice tests before each exame.Im really smart so maybe thats it aswell
he not that bad of a teacher he just talks extremely fast and tells you information you wouldn't need to know. all essay tests but old exams posted on blackboard. pretty hard grader expects you to know everything including dates. laughs at his own jokes. is a nice guy just not the greatest teacher.
Seriously, do yourself a favor and avoid him at all costs
No Comments
Totally unfair! The final was to go to Benny Hana's! What the heck? I spent $25!
He is a good teacher with command of the subject matter he teaches. Take notes, ask questions and engage in class discussion and you will be fine. It's college stop crying this is a very smart gifted professor use it to your advantage.
OK HE IS SOO EASYYYY..i mean come on he gives u the ques. for the essayes a week before the test..and the answers are streight from your notes....BUT YOU have to take notes in his class..yes he talks alot, and gives you one 10 pg. paper which is really easy..its like a book report
His tests are hard and totally left up to his discretion, and his class was painfully boring, hes also a bit of a dork you can tell.
hes not helpfull at ALL. all class consists of is taking notes for 52 minutes straight. never reviews for tests..doesnt even say what will be on them. He says we should study his past tests but he doesnt even put similar qus..
If you want to see your GPA drop, then by all means take him. He is like a robot, never takes time to explain. And if you ask him about something twice he gets angry that you disrupted him. His tests are ridiculously hard. Plus he loughs at his own jokes, what can i sau more, well i recommend that if you have him next semester, get out now while yo
thee worstt.. i took him because i thought i would be able to handle it... dont do it to ureself
DONT TAKE! I HAD A 4.0 BEFORE TAKING HIM & I DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT I HAVE NOW! GET OUT NOW!
Was absolutly useless. Tried to make the tests as hard as possible, so he wouldn't have as many term papers to grade and openly admitted it. Would encourage people to drop his class. Horrible! Do not take!

He's ok. He does lecture the whole time so take notes. Gives blackboard quizzes and u can use open notes obv. In my opinion he starts and ends on time, always asks if we have any "procedural questions," clear most of the time. I'd say he's pretty fair but God forbid you leave the class for any reason he just about locks you in the room overall good
get out while you can!! trust me, do not even go near this class....complete waste of life, and money. will def bring your GPA down!
Isnt too bad, just a hard grader. As long as you go to class and take notes U'll be fine... Read 2 books of your choosing for book reviews and write a 8-10 pg paper at the end of the term. Bad jokes but makes the notes interesting..... Cool guy just expects too much from students when its mostly a freshmen class
He gives a lot of notes and tons of information, but he's really smart and passionate about the course. Just take notes and you'll be fine. We had weekly quizzes and they were all open book. Overall, he made the course interesting ,
There are a few words I'd like to use to describe this teacher, but it'll get my post deleted. Please avoid him. Very hard grader and way too much work for a core class. 2 book reports, weekly quizzes, 3 tests, a 7 page paper...this isn't a 300+ level class. Why in the world does he grade so hard and assign so much work?
one of the best teachers at iona. his classes may be hard but they are definitley worth taking. if you put in some effort you will do fine.
WORST TEACHER EVER!!! DONT TAKE HIM! extremely hard grader and makes it impossible to pass!! doesnt care if you show up to class and encourages kids not to come
Pretty bad teacher, very biased in his beliefs and will make you adopt them for tests if you want to do well. He is very helpful though if you're not an idiot about things. Come to him with your issues when they happen and not weeks later and he'll help you with anything. Good guy to just have a talk with too but just overall not a good teacher.
very biased, however informative, kind of a pain in the rear, does not let you leave class w/o raising your hand, never absent, 2 book reports, 1 paper, 3 test drops lowest grade and 1 final, about 10-15 online 5 question quizes that are easy if there are better options, chose them, however hes not the worst
Makimura is a boss, plain and simple. Be warned though, if you don't enjoy history, don't take him. As long as you pay attention, take good notes, and keep up with the work you'll do fine. He usually gives weekly quizzes on blackboard that you can practically google the answers to, 7-10 pg paper, 2 book reviews and 3 tests..it's like a HS AP course
Not easy but a good professor
Hes not a bad teacher. He gives you alot of chances to bring up your grade, but theres alot of work involved in this course. As long as you take notes from his lectures, you'll do fine on the tests.
You will not get an A unless you adhere to his view of world history (which is incorrect). He portrays capitalism as the cause for World War II, and praises communism as the best socio-economic system. I received an A by conveying the inherent injustice of western society (contrary to my actual belief) on his tests and papers.
Makimura is a BOSS point blank. Quiz due before every class all you have to do is read. 2 book reviews 1 10 page paper. He goes over the test questions and answers before the test. He is very knowledgable and a great professor. It's a lot of work but hey its college get over it
Despite the rating below, Professor Makimura is actually a very good teacher. I had no issues in his class. I got A's on all my papers and B's on all of the test. It just takes work...as a real college class should. He has his own views but, for the most part, does not let that sway his grading. Take this Professor! He's also hilarious!
I'm surprised to see such a low rating for professor Makimura. He knows his stuff and is extremely resourceful. I took his non western civilization course as well as Japanese History and thoroughly enjoyed them both. If you are genuinely interested in learning and not just looking to get by then this is the professor for you.
He definately knows his material and he is very smart, but he is very boring. He puts all of his notes online and just reads off the notes in class. I like history and I still think it's very boring. If you're into lectures and being bored, this class is for you.
The class itself isn't that bad but the work with it is a lot. 10 page paper and quizzes due almost every class. Not necessary and he is boring. I wouldn't recommend buying the textbooks or taking him.
He knows what he is talking about and gives you notes to print out which helps. But his tests are horrible plus he just rambles on the whole time about all the material and sometimes i dont know if i need to know that or not
online quizes (google helps) the quizes are on the lectures he will do the next class. Don't need a book because he will read the power points and those questions will be on the midterm and final. Easy teacher oh 1 research paper on a book. hes funny
THE EASIEST TEACHER YOU'LL EVER GET! He literally tells you everything you should expect. Who ever fails this class has to be plain dumb. Gives you all the questions for your test before you even take them. GIves you the easiest online test two times a week (you can take it as many times as you want) And he will always work with you. TOO EASY!
Makimura is a great teacher who keeps the class interesting. He has 5 tests, and you can drop the lowest grade. If he sees you're working hard, he appreciates the effort. Do all the work and you'll be fine.
gives you all the test questions ahead of time, then reviews them the class before the test. online quizzes throughout the semester that you can redo until youre happy with your grade, but make sure you do them. rough test grader but makes up for it by letting you resubmit book reports throughout the semester for a chance to bring up your grade
Too much work if you just want an easy A. Very unclear with basically everything he teaches. Only good thing is he lets you retake the online quizzes as much as you want.
I took him for a night class and it was pretty easy work wise. He didn't care if you stayed the entire time as long as you handed in everything. WE had a map quiz and just a midterm and final that he gave essays for and we completed it outside of class. He does tend to ramble but hes sweet.
Such a corny guy, makes the class awkward funny. I had a lecture night class where most of the people left half way through and they didn't do well. He gives 2 10min breaks and lets you do nearly all of the work 'take-home' style which is amazing. His tests which are short answer are straight forward and easy if you review the notes.
Lectures are long and occasionally boring, Gives a map quiz (lets you redo if you don't do well, 6 page paper (hard, but lets you redo), take home midterm and final, online quiz (can do until you get 100). If you do the work and pay attention you will do great. Would take again.
one map quiz that he will let you redo if you dont do well. 10 online quizzes that have to be done by the end of the semester & can retake them as many times as you want until happy with your grade. One midterm and one final, both exams will be essay questions, they are hard and specefic so must listen to his lectures
He's a very cool and chill guy. Doesn't care if you skip class as long as you do your work and makes that clear on the first day. However, he is an EXTREMELY tough grader on the very few assignments that he assigns. Only few out of my large class got anything higher than a C+ on any of the assignments. Lectures are long and quite boring.
Hit or a Miss with him. He does not care if you are on your computer and if you pay attention or not. His midterm and final are take home, and lets you redo the paper. The thing is he is a very tough grader. He expects a lot from you. there are 10 online quizzes which you can do as many times as you want. Got a B+ with minimal effort
He is a very easy Professor IF you do the work. He is very nonchalant. He has three tests (this includes the final), a paper, and online quizzes (all are take-home). His humor is very above-average and challenging to follow. If you go to his Office Hours prior to every exam, you will definitely do well in his class!
He's a really cool dude. Online quizzes which you can re-take as many times as you want. Gives you multiple test essay questions you can review before the exam, then picks a few of the questions randomly the day of the test. Pay attention and you should be good.
Amazing teacher! My roommate and I both had him this past semester an loved him. Take home tests (essays) that were generally easy as long as you tried and added a lot of detail. Only one quiz given in class (map quiz) but you were able to retake it. Final was take home as well. Doesn't really care about attendance, it helps to take your own note
he's a really tough grader, he lectures in all of his classes , gives 5 exams and they are all take home , does not care for attendance as long as you turn in all his exams in time , no homework, one map quiz that you can makeup , he takes off the lowest exam grade.
no point to go to class. only grades are 4 essays that he grades extremely harsh, you can't evens notes from class because he doesn't give any. awful don't take this class
NOT A GOOD TEACHER. JUST TALKS THE ENTIRE TIME. DO NOT LEARN ANYTHING. EXPECTS YOU TO WRITE EVERYTHING HE SAYS BUT SPEAKS SO FAST. DO NOT TAKE HIM. DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOU.
He would babble a lot during lectures, so it was impossible to take good notes. Gives 3 take home tests (very long essays); got As on everything, and I was one, if not the only one, who would actually participate in class but ended up with a B+, which isnt bad but it just wasnt fair considering how hard I worked. doesnt give As, would not recommend
He's the toughest professor I've ever had. I've been in college for 3 years and I never got a D on any assignment up until his class. He does not lecture instead he pulls up pictures on google and talks over them so fast there's no chance you can actually take notes. Him grading consists in him looking at the paper for 5 seconds and that's it
I recently took Makimura over the winter break for an online course and I highly recommend taking this class. Two As in your pockets if you take this class first then afterwards you go back and take HST 101. Makimuras online assignments (4) and bonus are very easy just copy down exactly what he says in the video lecture and you will do fine.
Professor Makimura is extremely knowledgeable about History in general. He is a tough-grader though and has high expectations. He gives everyone an outline of notes of what he will be talking about in class. One Map Quiz, Online Quizzes, One Midterm, A Short Essay, and Final Exam (He literally is giving you the A to the final exam. Copy everything)
Being in his class is actually very pleasing. He is a tough grader, when given a paper he wants info. of what he lectures not what is online (unless he asks for online research) He is genuinely a funny person and will crack jokes along the way. He does prefer for his students to arrive a bit early to class but wont call you out if you come in late.
Awful professor. Do not take him. Jumps around on different units from class to class. Hardest grader I've ever had.
Professor Makimura is an excellent instructor and interesting to listen every so often. There are weekly assignments that are due every week, online quizzes, one map quiz, a 15 page research paper, and the final exam. I would say that the weekly assignments are pretty helpful in preparing you to take the final exam if you do well on them.
You either can buy the book for the class or find it online. You have to do two essays based off the chapter section that you are assigned to or the whole of one particular chapter (Chapter 1 or 10) and discuss the chapter in class on the day that you are assigned. PARTICIPATION is a must if your attentions are to get an A in the class.
Professor Makimura is totally different from how you are use to taking him for this particular class. Everyone is gathered in a circle so that it's based off of class discussion of the reading. The class is predominantly based off the readings so it's very important to read and know what you're talking about before class.
Professor Makimura was teaching the History of Violence class this year alone because Thiery was busy doing other things. He gives an extra credit assignment as well to boost your overall grade by five points. Professor Makimura will likely teach this class again in the future if he wants too.
Special Topics in History - History of the Samurai: Professor Makimura assigns to everyone in the class weekly assignments to do based on the class lectures. Its best to take notes in class. A twenty page research paper along with a presentation on your topic. Technically speaking, if you put enough effort into his class you will receive an A.
Take this class with a different prof.
Special Topics in History - Continuing Problems in Global Civilization. I'll put it like this. 1) Start Once the Class opens up 2) Use Your Time Wisely 3) The Internet is at your disposal 4) E-mail if you aren't sure and he'll get back to you. With that said, it's not to difficult to pass the class, but you will have to put in the effort.
Despite how hard you work in this class you will not get an A.
Professor Makimura is very knowledgeable but he is though. When you take tests or do essays he practically wants his lectures word for word. He gave me a C on an essay because the correct information was reworded. It was taken straight out of his notes but reworded, so basically you just have to regurgitate his lectures back to him to pass.
Posts lectures online so going to class is essentially pointless unless you have a question. Goes off on a LOT of tangents about unrelated topics and claims that all the history you learned before his class is propaganda. The only reason I am posting this here is because he says he does not even read his own reviews because he's secured by tenure.
He is a tough grader. You can answer his questions with the right answer and with many details and he will still give you a bad grade. Also, his lectures are pre-recorded and they are up to 2 hours long.
Not a bad guy, very knowledgeable. He does have pre recorded lectures that are hours long which makes attending class very pointless. He likes to talk about random things throughout class completely unrelated to the topic. Speeds through units which makes it very hard to pass.
Overall the class is very laid back and he just lectures every class while no one pays attention at all. He is a tough grader and assigns about 7 essays for the entire semester that are 3-5 each, must be well written. He is EXTREMELY boring teacher and it was not enjoyable at all.
He was a very funny teacher but he talks the whole entire class period. All he does is go over a new lesson each class and barely any work is assigned. He assigned about 4 essays but for two of them it was a question based on videos he would post on blackboard. He literally Wants u to copy every word he said. Doesnt like when you use outside info
Professor Makimura is a very good. He knows what he is talking about, and provides great historical context to back his points up. He is most certainly a tough grader on his test essays, as he is looking for students to have a higher understanding on the topics. If you are interested in history, you will look forward to each lecture.
Very hard class, tough grader. Really long papers that count for basically most of your grade. Wouldn't take this class unless you're really interested in the topic. He's a cool guy just not the ideal professor
Did not have a good experience with this professor. From the grades he gave me, and the work effort I put in for this professor, it seems like he wanted to fail me. He said that the tests were based off of the power points he provided on blackboard, would put on tests. Grade I got back did not reflect this. Will never be taking his class again.
One of the worst history classes I've ever taken, due to all his lectures being long videos that are probably 12 hrs of video watching per week maybe more. For me this is just not it.
This is one of the worst history classes I've ever been in. He posts lecture videos on youtube that are more than 1 hour long and it's very hard to pay attention because he goes so fast. Please try to avoid taking this professor at all costs. I have A's in all of my other classes except this one because of how hard it is to keep up.
Please don't take him! Don't. He talks all class and expects you to memorize and understand everything that's on his two-hour lectures on youtube. He is always laughing awkwardly and is a harsh grader.
Horrible professor he doesn't teach makes you watch videos before the actual lecture, has 20 online quizzes, a huge writing assessment and every test has 2 essays. Avoid him if you can
if u care about ur sanity don't take his class. he is awful, mean to students, and a horrible grader. if you get an answer wrong he will make fun of you during class. he assigns videos to watch & the whole class is having to ask questions- you don't ask questions you fail. honestly if I could go back and save myself from this class I would.
He is awful- I guarantee he is already praying on your downfall. He is an evil little man. Please listen to these heanice reviews and understand why this man should be abolished from the university. he automatically has a grudge against you and degrades and makes fun of you when a question you get his wrong. please save yourself I wish I did.
He told us that World War 2 started in Asia and would insist on it. IT DID NOT START IN ASIA.
Not a terrible teacher, but is very knit picky. If you don't like having every sentence you write graded then don't take classes with him
I believe Professor Makimura is a great person and teacher. The only thing about this class is the work load is heavy, however he provides plenty of content and assistance on how to do the assignments, and also what they are graded based on. He grades generously as well. Participation points, and he drops the worst test out of 4. (:
I have never been more disrespected as a student in my life. He expected us to participate from videos of himself that he made us watch PRIOR to the lecture that was 1-2 hrs. He lectured on the questions students had from the video and participation was 20% If your question was stupid or your answer was wrong he would not give participation at ALL
The WORST professor EVER. Not only is he terrible at teaching, but he is extremely rude. He is extremely disrespectful to his students. On top of going to his in person lectures, you are required to watch almost 3 hours worth of lectures before you even go to class every week. I have learned absolutely nothing in this class.
Trust me and DO NOT take his class. If you need to take the course and his class is the only one open, wait until the following semester for a different professor. All your tests are take home essays and no matter what you do you will never get an A. If you listen to one review please listen to this one to save yourself and your gpa.
If you take him for HIS345 he's not bad at all, you just need to present with a partner two times for the semester and the whole course is about one book. He is a tough grader, so be prepared to put in good effort. Make sure to participate!!
Terrible, he would re-use all his lecture videos he used from quarantine & barely teaches. He asks questions based on his 2-hour videos that u are REQUIRED to watch before each class for ur graded participation pts. He makes really mean remarks if u have questions and said some really racist, rude things. He said he grades based on how he feels.
I would strongly recommend not taking this professors class. I can see that he is not a bad person but he is not a nice teacher. He is very educated in his subject but expects everyone else to be as educated as him and will laugh at you if you say something wrong. He grades extremely harsh.
You are required to watch a 3hr lecture of him discussing the topic before class. And you need to participate or your grade would suffer. Honestly I never watch his lectures just make sure to participate to get 20/20. Second there isn't any homework in his class but your grades are all hand written exams which are take home. He is a tougher grader
Avoid this professor if you can - his long, fast-paced video lectures make it tough to keep up. But with tools like unstuck AI and a solid study routine, you can still manage to get a decent grade.
Don't take this professor. I have tried my best in his classes and do all 3 tests (you have to do 2 essays for each test). You have to participate a lot for full credit, has quizzes throughout the semester but does not consider it as full credit into your grade, and no matter how hard you try, he does not care!!! Avoid this professor!!!
He's a decent dude but as a professor is very lecture heavy, expects you to watch lecture videos longer than scheduled course time. Test and essays are extremely important, and he is a tough grader. Made an elective intro class more difficult than needed to be for sure.
this professor made me feel awful. he would laugh in your face if you got a question wrong (he would complain when no one participated). In my class only one person received a grade above a C+ and that was only 1 time. He would tell you exactly what he wanted you to write on the exam but would mark those answers wrong every time even when right
He's a very tough grader and participation matters in the sense that it has to be a meaningful comment. If it's not, you won't get points. The essays he makes us do are all by hand which is fine but he is such a hard grader it's actually insane. Do yourself a favor and run.
Do not take this class! He is very disrespectful towards students. He grades papers based on opinion, not on whether it is historical correct. Participation is a large chunk of your grade, however he rarely if ever awards people these points. His "lectures" often turn into random tangents about unrelated topics and he'll laugh at your questions.
Don't know why so many people hating this guy was awesome very easy if you come to class and do what you're supposed to do.
