go to class major incentives, nice guy
What did he say?????!!!
Good attendence helps your grade. He gives a lot of time for practice and review and provides practice exams as well, I feel I learned as much as I could in this particular math class. He is a very nice guy and smart mathematician.
This dude CAN'T speak english, assigns 3 hours a week on a computer program, gives crazy ammounts of homework, quizzes every class, and all of this for my one hour a week class. Avoid at all costs
tough to understand and ambigious on test which don't follow along with h.w. would not take another a class
Incredibly hard subject made even harder by a bad teaching style.
lots of homework, bad teaching style, hard to learn from him, textbook doesn't help with learning, is annoying.
he was very difficult to understand
I was nervous about his class, because of what I had heard, but it turned out to be fine. The homework is on-line and can be done as many times as you want until you like your grade. The tests aren't too bad. He's not hard to understand, people who say that are just making an excuse for their poor grade. He was nice and has a sense of humor.
I love him. He is nice and helpful and if you go to class, you will reap the benefits at the end of the year. I got an A.
Very sweet guy. As long as you do your work and come to class, he'll help you out, like extend homework due dates. His teaching style might be kind of tough to understand, but he'll help people after class. Just go to class, consult the book, and don't rely heavily on him to explain everything to you. (I only had him once a week)
You can't understand him, but its still possible to make an A. You only need to come to class for attendance, not to learn, trust me. All homework is online, and can be understood straight from the book. The 3 tests are online and open book as well.
He is unintelligible, he resents students in lower level courses, he laughs at students who do not understand. He also makes an effort to call out students, and then when they know the answer, he acts surprised that they would. He is condescending, he will not compromise anything, regardless of your situation.
This is a hard class for some of us who don't speak math and he makes it much easier. go to his office for extra help if you don't understand. class is once a week...that is tough when things get confusing....but he is caring and really wants to see his students do well. i really like him!
I've always gotten As in math until this class. He made fun of & laughed at me when I asked questions, & he got mad when anyone asked him to repeat himself because his accent is hard to understand. Speaks fast, writes fast while standing in front of the board, & erases too soon. I cried every day until I gave up & took an F to save my sanity.Avoid!
Math in general, is boring, his class is even more boring. You can't Understand some of the stuff he says, and some of the things he says is just funny, like for "Cubic Root" he says "Cubie woot". I would suggest taking another teacher. You don't need the book, you use blackboard for everything.
Yes he is Asian and has a thick accent. After about a week you'll understand him. Dr. Chang is extremely intelligent and is very thorough in his teaching. He will do EVERYTHING in his power to make sure you understand the material given that you go see him. His tests aren't hard at all either. Go to class, take notes, go to him for help.. "A"
Dr. Chang was a very intelligent teacher, had him for CALC 151 and I've never done well in math before and recieved a B in his class. HW grades are practically handed to you, and you are rewarded GREATLY for attending class. dont disregard b/c of accent! He is a great math professor. though i would not recommend at 8 am...
A great guy, for the people who he said laughed at him dont understand that he is happy that you are asking questions. His accent may be frusterateing at first but if you focus on what hes writing the bad english becomes more clear. I came after class and he worked with me past hours so I could better understand the material. All around good teacher
kind of hard to understand at first, but you get used to it. never used the textbook at all. he recommends no taking notes in class so you can pay attention to what hes doing. he also puts the class notes online. hes really good at helping people who dont understand something. hard class, but good professor.
Good teacher, very helpful, posts all notes online, attendence is required but you can show up at the end of class and just sign yourself in.
Very smart teacher who knows what he is talking about. he post all notes online. If you miss 2 or fewer classes he replaces lowest test grade. Dont buy the book, you will be wasting your money.
He is a very smart man who expains things well but his accent makes it tough to understand him. He puts all his notes online. Homework is done online and tests are half online half in class. Attendance is taken by a sign in sheet. Don't miss more than 2 classes to get a low test dropped. I don't recoend his 8am class... Too early to comprehend that accent.
This professor is terrible. He called me out in class because I asked if I could solve a problem on the math test the next period a different way. He yelled at me for about 3 minutes and then for the rest of the period made it a point to single me out. The classes after that incident when I would raise my hand he refuses to call me.
It is calculus so it is hard. But he does a good job of teaching. HW is online and tests are half in class half online. No attendance policy but if you miss 2 or less your lowest test is replaced with your highest. I say take it. Just not at 8 am
His calculus class was tough, but it is calculus. Hes a pretty good teacher, hard to understand sometimes because of his accent. I dont reccomend taking his class unless you have already taken class before, he teaches in a more advanced way and another professor might have been more helpful.
It's calculus so it's going to be difficult. He's very smart, but sometimes it's hard to understand what he's trying to explain. He has help sessions and i would recommend attending if you don't understand something. Miss 2 or less classes and he'll replace your lowest test with your highest.
I would not recommend taking his class unless you have previously taken calculus. He made it harder than it needed to be. It was difficult to understand his teaching, and he tends to go through the material pretty quickly. He also would confuse us by writing the wrong things on the board and then randomly changing the answer 20 minutes later.
Great teacher, high expectation.
He walks through all the types of problems that you have to do on the test, basically the test is just different numbers. His english is funny sometimes but its not impossible to understand. Go to class, he tells you everything you need to know. also, NO REASON TO BUY TEXTBOOK. never looked at it, got an A in the class.
I heard a lot of bad things about Dr. Chang going into his class and was a bit worried, but once class started I realized that everyone was pretty much incorrect about him. He is quite clear, funny, and speaks excellent English. I would recommend him.
I have to say that although he can speak english, it is not always clear, and he sometimes has difficulty understanding english. Also, he had to be corrected multiple times on problems. When asked for help, he does help with the class.
Very organized class. All class notes are provided online. If you struggle at all with math, I'd suggest going to the math lab.
Dr. Chang is pretty hilarious but intense. He wants you to succeed, but he wants you to work for it (slacking off is an easy way to make him mad). Be prepared, ask questions, do the homework as soon as possible, and there won't be problems.
Most of class is spent watching him go over examples that nobody has time to copy down. He is difficult to understand. Make sure to go to the Math Lab as often as you need because you're screwed if you fall behind. On the plus side, he is nice and half of each test are online.
Professor Chang is a very nice guy. His axiomatic systems class can get to be difficult to wrap your head around. Many people in my class struggled to understand him, but he still did a very good job teaching what we needed to learn.
Once you fall behind, you're doomed for the whole semester. Very hard to understand, will do a problem on the board and at the end will say "This is what not to do" after everyone just wrote it down. The only reason I got a B is because I befriended a math major for the online portions of the test.
Excellent professor. Has a well designed class plan with online accessible lecture notes which are helpful if you forgot something. Homework is almost always daily but well structured in a way that really helps you memorize concepts. He's also very helpful out of class if you need it. Only complaint is that his handwriting can be messy at times.
Very organized. Mandatory attendance. Usually has a quiz for each section of notes, 5 chances to take each quiz and the highest grade is kept. He explains things very clearly and is funny sometimes. You will have to study, if you want a good grade, but the class isn't really that hard. Don't fall behind and you will be fine.
He is a very confusing teacher. He would give examples and not allow enough time to write them down. When I tried to go over his examples later, I was unable to read his handwriting. I would not recommend.
NOT RECOMMENDED! Very difficult to learn from.
Professor Chang is an excellent teacher of mathematics. He is organized, offers a well-designed class, is always available for help when needed, and has high expectations for his students. He also emphasizes listening to his lecture, understand what's being taught, rather than wasting time copying his examples; he posts all lecture notes online.
He has just the right amount of homework, enough to help learn the topic but not a lot. Powerpoints are clear if you pay attention. He has a small accent but it isn't too hard to follow. You need to study for the class but it isn't a hard class at all.
Love Changy. He's such a sweet man. Very hard to understand sometimes though because his English isn't perfect. But he gives you 5 chances to get a 100 on every homework assignment. There are 4 tests including the final and half of the tests are online and open book and open note. Easy to get good grades on the tests. Highly recommend him!
Dr. Chang is an amazing professor. The class is basically all proofs so be prepared. He teaches through a powerpoint and writing notes in it. There is graded homework assigned every class, but it is generally only 2 or 3 problems and not very difficult. Tests are based off homework so its helpful. Only complaint is he grades hw though. Take him!
Great teacher. Grades homework tough but not that bad on tests. Very willing to help. People who say he makes you feel stupid just need to understand he is from a different country and sometimes comes across a certain way. Extremely nice and easy to understand. The class is straight forward but the class is proofs.
495 is a tough class. Dr. Chang doesn't really teach you the LATEX coding, but he will help you learn it if you get stuck, so don't worry about the coding part. He has very high expectations and he will make you feel dumb, but it isn't intentional, he just wants you to put in a lot of work and thinking. Don't fall behind on your paper.
Hard to understand. Lots of homework (its easy though). Lectures are heavy and boring. Tests are hard and half online. Thought this class would be an easy math choice for a non-math major, I was wrong. Do not take
Really cares about how his students do & wants everyone to understand the material- he'll go over it as many times as needed. TONS of online homework (like 3-10 questions per unit, 2-3 times/week) and 3-4 tests inc. final. Homework was super easy and had multiple chances; tests were in class & online and were hard for most of us but everyone passed
Worst teacher I have ever had at UNCW. Dr. Chang does not post any solutions to homework or tests and will not explain what you did wrong leaving you no way of learning the correct way to complete problems. He gets upset if no one comes to office hours but once you go he will treat you as an inconvenience. Would not recommend to my worst enemy.
Dr. Chang is a great professor. He is accessible & helpful during office hours, and he teaches the concepts clearly in his lectures. A lot of homework assignments, but they are very useful to understand the concepts & prepare for his tests. Also, he DOES post solutions! I found these to be extremely helpful, especially when reviewing for tests.
This professor is the worst I've encountered BY FAR. Not only does he go through the notes FAST and VERY confusing but when you ask a question he does not teach things in a different way than he already did so if you didn't understand what he is saying, it sucks. Also he cuts you off when you ask a question. He makes this very hard DONT TAKE!
Prof. Chang is very passionate about teaching and he wants everyone to perform well. I don't understand some of the bad reviews! I want to set the record straight.. He's very available outside of class, and he's reasonable about grading when the grading counts. Tough homework grader because homework is a great study guide for exams. Great guy.
Dr. Chang isnt a bad professor, he just doesnt understand that some people learn things differently. Definitely go to his office hours because he will explain things until you get it, even if he has to do it 4 times. Also look over future homework before its due and itll help along with looking as future sections in the book! Good luck!
Professor Chang was a great professor. He really breaks down the topic and answers your questions if needed. He is also available for office hours if you need it. He might go through the lectures pretty fast because it is a lecture heavy class. He also gives out pop quizzes occasionally. Attendance is mandatory.
Definitely a tough grader, but helps you not make the same mistake more than once. Very responsive to questions & easy to get contact. Solid choice.
Hes a great guy and is probably excellent at teaching higher level classes. However, for calc one its rough. He makes algebraic mistakes in lectures and it confuses everyone. He takes some getting used to but he will definitely TRY to help you understand, but good luck unless you have a slight understanding already. Not the best, not the worst.
Teaches hard material but is helpful in any way possible.
Dont take this class if you are not already in the know of algebra and pre-calculus. The way he teaches is by writing the questions down and does 2 steps of how to find the answer then he just gives you the answer. He doesnt show a for real step-by-step explanation. Hes definitely has a bit of an ego too.
I absolutely hate him. He is the most awful teacher you can have. He posts his lectures online and he literally said that in the lecture that he won’t go into detail about how he got the answer because apparently we can figure it out ourself. Do not take him!!!
Dr. Chang was very repetitive in his lectures, and would only teach off pre-made slides with little explanation, and made you feel bad if you got a question wrong. I felt intimidated by him throughout the semester, and ended up teaching myself many topics because of this. He also gave so much homework.
Dr. Chang is very intelligent but struggles making big concepts simple for students. He calls students out on the spot in class, and teaches off little pre made slides. I had to teach myself most everything this course. Also english is not his first language which makes learning such a technical course like calc very difficult!!!
Mr. Chang did not utilize class time well. Most of my learning came from online lectures that never made me feel confident. He would do 2-3 questions in class that were repetitive & usually covered in an already done online lecture. He was intimidating & had no connections with any students. Calc is naturally hard and his class only worsened this.
Dr. Chang's a really cool guy and cares about students but the class is hard. Although I haven't heard about other professors, I was required to put in extra effort for this class. It's all slideshows about the textbook and homework is given for every section. If you must take 161, he isn't a terrible choice, but I didn't really like the class.
My perspective is from a math major. Highly structured class. Makes all lectures and notes readily available. Gives personal feedback on every assignment. Lectures themselves are engaging. Homework every class, but it's often short and just checks your understanding. Tests can be difficult but fair. Genuinely cares about your performance.
On top of the class being difficult as is, he breezes by lessons and assumes that you have understood everything unless you ask questions. Oh and I don't recommend doing that either because he will literally laugh at your face and give you the most pretentious answer possible. He's difficult to understand, and his handwriting isn't good either.
Dr. Chang is a smart professor, in each lecture he makes sure he gives the correct information along with answers. If he asks a question to the class and if you are a brave soul and try and answer and get it wrong, instead of saying nice try, he will aggressively point out where you are wrong. HW isn't bad, exams aren't all that bad.
He is nice and answers questions. I struggled with understanding his accent and handwriting when learning new concepts which is frustrating. He teaches off pre-made slides and doesn't give us review work for tests. All homework is on ALEKS and isn't really touched on in class. I wouldn't take him again because it was difficult to understand.
This professor was hard to understand because of accent and handwriting. He doesn't do a very good job at explaining things, he often over explained and tended to make concepts harder than they really are. Homework was done on ALEKS and sometimes did not follow what we did in class.
Dr. Chang is great because of many things. He is a great teacher and throughly enjoys what he does. His class isn't hard if you do the homework's for the class that day. Just study 30-45 minutes and you'll do great. My favorite professor, and his tests allow for extra credit so making a mistake or getting one wrong can still get you a 100!!
Calc is gonna be hard no matter what, but he made test very easy by offering 50% of it online. So that's practically a free 50, minimum every time. I'm pretty bad at math and still got a B. Take this with a friend and class wont be too terrible no matter what calc won't be fun.
Homework is due 2 and sometimes even 3 days a week. Dr Chang is very smart but his lectures are overcomplicated. He goes so fast as if we all already understand the concepts even though its our first time learning them. He rushes through questions but he rushes through the answers and sometimes laughs at you when you get a problem wrong.
Im a math moron, so its gonna be hard if you're in the same boat but he does 50% online test so essentially this class is a guaranteed pass. Take him with a friend and you are chilling.
Yaw Chang is a solid calc professor. He teaches quick and expects a lot but if you actually follow along and take notes its genuinely not that hard of a class. He takes attendance but its not required. However, if u don't miss any class he replaces your lowest test with ur highest test. Half of the test is online, so 50% is guaranteed on all tests.
I love yaw chang
The GOAT HIM SELF literally the Michael Jordan of calculus. Ask bro about his perduct rule he don't play bout it. He's genuinely a really good professor, I heavily recommend him to others.
Dr. Chang definitely knows what he's doing and expects the class to know already as well. If you sit down and teach yourself the topics, then the tests will not be that hard you just need to take the time to do it. He does laugh when you get a question wrong. The day that Dr. Chang laughed at me is the day I got in a car accident and totaled my car
Hes just a chill guy man
Dr. Chang is a great calculus professor; his lectures are interesting. Homework is not too bad, exams are half online half in person, if you get perfect attendance, he replaces your lowest exam score. Overall, a chill guy, just give him respect and he will help you out. He made calculus easy for me to understand.
Dr.Chang is a great calc professor. Really cares about the students and wants them to link what they're learning beyond the classroom. He's the GOAT, but be prepared to work, it's not going to come naturally.
While I am not a math wizard, I believe Dr. Chang purposely complicates his lectures. He will laugh at students when they ask questions and yell at students if they get something wrong. He discourages students from using the tutoring center and is quite mean. His tests are half online and half in person, the in person look nothing like lectures.
Yaw Chang is one of the worst professors i've had. While its not extremely hard to get a decent grade in the class, his lectures are nearly impossible to understand. He is very hard to understand, and often rushes through his examples like he expects you to already know it.
He's a good person, but he talked fast in his lectures and it was kinda hard for me to keep up. Half of his exams are online with open notes so that was helpful and his homework wasn't anything to hard, there was just a lot of it. Overall as a professor I wouldn't say he was good, but he wasn't bad either.
logsomatic function PRO! very good professor, half of tests are online, extra credit for all tests adds to 106% total potential score. funny during lectures, "laughs at students" in the same way he laughs when he himself makes a mistake, finds learning fun/funny. get ready to say good afternoon/morning.
I ended this class with a 79.8 and he didn't round it up to a B. I attended every class, and participated.
