Professor Chooi is a wonderful teacher! Hard class, but great prof!!
She is so unclear and lectures are torture!
She's NUTS!
Nuts isn't descriptive enough. How this person functions in society is beyond my comprehension...
i like her. she's funny
She is an awesome professor and I thought that her class was a lot of fun. She made biology fun and interesting, which encouraged me to take more courses in biology. She was also extremely helpful, answering emails during evenings, etc.
Overall she's a pretty good teacher.
Lectures were interesting and funny. She gave us extra credit practice exams right before the real ones. This was a big help in this otherwise difficult course.
I think she's the only Immunology teacher. To pass her tests memmorize EVERYTHING that has to do with the diseases. The tests are all recall, very difficult. Also she is not very responsive to your emails, but her outlines are helpful.
extra credit, funny lectures, good teacher, easy bio grade for ppl who suck at bio
Dr. Chooi is a really good professor- very nice, funny and makes the class somewhat interesting. Attendance counts toward EC for your final, so go to class!! If you're not going to attend, though, find someone that you can get the class notes from, because they help on the tests.
I usually fall a sleep in class.
Awesome for L112 but really difficult for L321. BUT if you are a good memorizer then memorize her packets she has you print and you will do GREAT in her class.
She is funny and makes the class interesting, but you HAVE to attend class as part of your grade... Exams are multiple choice but difficult - study, study, study!! And if you need help, don't go to her... she's not very responsive; but the AIs and UTIs are
OK, she is a good teacher, interesting and funny, but you have to attend an extra class as a part of your grade, along with other lectures, so in all, you have to attend 4 hours a week but only get 3 credits for it! It's unfair and it sucks (especially if you already have 18 hours without the extra one added on)!
Good teacher and good class setup. Extra credit exams make the class easier and are good review for the real exams.
She makes the class a little more interesting and she is a funny prof. But her tests are hard and she can be unclear in her lectures, but her outlines are very helpful along with the extra credit exams.
I like the class. The tests require serious studying. She funny and helpful.
Appears to be very difficult at first. You MUST not only study the extra credit exams before the test, but MEMORIZE these extra credit exams...especially for the final. ATTEND CLASS EVERY DAY! I CAN'T EVEN EXPRESS HOW IMPORTANT ATTENDING CLASS IS FOR YOUR GRADE. I didn't understand anything she said all semester, but I got a B+ in the class.
Hands down the worst class I have ever taken. She is confusing and rude to people who don't understand. She shows countless overhead slides that are unrealted and that don't help during the test. Her lectures on are unstructured and her online notes are more confusing than helpful. She gives a lot of extra credit but nonthless an awful teacher
If you take L104, buy the book and the workbook!! She does not do a good job of teaching so you will definitely need the book. She tries to make jokes, but they're pretty lame. For tests, just memorize the extra credit test answers beforehand. Beware of her final though!! I had a B+ going into the final, but that dropped to a C+. Extra credit=good!
She was absurd! She said bizzarre things that had nothing to do with the class. Half the questions on the tests she didn't go over. Her slides are useless. But the study guide for the final exam is the exam so that at least helped a little.
She gives a lot of extra credit which is really helpful for the exams, but her lectures are useless because she only spends a short time talking about the material..and the rest cracking RUDE and unfunny jokes. The only reason for lecture are EC quizes.. it also sucks because she makes u add a mandatory discussion component that isnt listed when yo
Going to class and, for the most part, reading the book are wastes of time. Just memorize the extra-credit exams' questions and answers. What a joke of class.
Buy the book and workbook. The tests are unecessarily difficult, but have 1/2 the answers of the EC exams. Memorize them and STUDY. You will not get through this class if you don't study. Many of her test questions are over material that you didn't have in the book, lectures, or skeletons.
Most questions come from extra credit tests and skeletons, study those. Lot of extra credit given, it all helps b/c the tests have questions over content that was not mentioned anywhere.
This class is maddening. The tests are HARD to study for. Study EVERYTHING. 1/4 of the questions on the exams aren't covered in the notes, book, or in lecture. She forgets what she covered with the exams. Study your practice exams! They will help you on the exams.
Very funny! I hate bio but love her! Her tests were easy! Gives out study guides with questions that are on the test! Made class fun!
The tests are hard, extra credit tests are nothing like the tests themselves, and I guess she used to give a practice exam for the final that was the exact same as the final..NOT ANY MORE. SUCKS! I never knew what to study before a test...
Pretty tough class. Skeletons and lecture were useless. Doesn't really lecture in any logical way. Just showed pictures and diagrams. Tests were hard. Extra credit tests rarely prepared for the actual tests. Overall, she was nice and funny but tests were hard. Anything/everything could be on the tests. Know it all.
Class was difficult. Skeleton was useless. Doesn't "lecture" like you would think. Subject covered was interesting but requires A LOT of independent studying. Attending class is pretty much useless except for attendance and pop quizzes grades. DO NOT buy the bundle pack. waste of money. only buy textbook!
She can be a little...strange ...but if you pay attention, you'll do fine. When studying for tests, compare your notes from class, from the book, and from the handouts. (You NEED to take notes in the book). The book my class used had an interactive website, and if you use the study tools, you're pretty much going to get an A.
Not only is she completely useless when it comes to teaching, she makes rude, jokes for 90% of the class. The other time in class is her mumbling about things in an illogical order and showing charts that have to relevance to the class. The lectures, skeletons, class notes, book, mini-quizzes, and extra credit exams don't help for the actual exams
Some exam questions are out of nowhere. Lecture is interesting and you will learn a lot of random things about biology. She's a nice lady, but she's way too smart to be teaching an intro class. I think she uses the same exams every year and forgets that there are certain topics we never covered yet they still show up on the exam.
Interesting professor, sometimes ditzy and forgets what has been covered. Gives out MAJOR extra credit if you have perfect attendance, up to 10% of your grade. Make sure you take advantage of the book and the cd that comes with it, some questions are directly from the bio website she gives out on the first day.
She is kind of ditsy when it comes to daily lectures. But overall, easy if you come to class take advantage of ALL the extra credit she gives, read the book and take notes. I learned a lot in her class!
She makes many rude remarks during class but nothing too horrible. If you fail multiple test she will automatically fail you no matter what actual standing. She is a hard teacher to follow during lectures due to her rambling. I feel like her class was a waste of time and I will never take a class with her again.
She offers ridiculously large amounts of extra credit. However you MUST attend every lecture or she will take it all away. She is extremely knowledgeable in basic biology, in fact much of what you learn in 112, she personally discovered when she did research at Harvard. She's entertaining and a little crazy, but really nice and loves to teach.
She is incredibly intelligent and knows everything about what she teaches. Unfortunately, she is a little unorganized so it REALLY helps to read the textbook and look over her online notes (her "skeletons" as she calls them). She offers SO MUCH extra credit too but you may only have 1 unexcused absence all semester. It is totally worth it though.
Although she is very intelligent, she is simply NOT a good professor. She spends most of the class talking about herself or going off on tangents. 2. Lectures via powerpoint which she doesn't know how to use OR she'll write in the tiniest letters possible on the board 3. Exams do not cover relevant material. If you want to learn, take a diff prof.
Arguably the worst teacher I've ever had. I attempted to take notes for the first couple weeks but just gave up because of how hard it was to make any notes in a logical order from her rants. She provides useless slides on a projector and quickly removes them before you can write anything down. Tests are hard and includes questions not in the book.
Prof. Chooi is the best teacher ever! I don't really know what the person below is talking about. I thought all the material was very clear. She is kind, helpful and on top of that, HILARIOUS. Makes biology incredibly entertaining. At the end of the semester, you will really feel like you got a great education. The best at IU by far...
There is so much extra credit available in this class. Chooi is hilarious, but her lectures alone won't help you very much with the test. Just do the assigned extra credit work and skim the chapters before the test and you should be fine.
This class is pretty informative. She gives you extra credit if you go to lecture, which definitely helps. However, 90% of the class is based off exams. STUDY. The material isn't incredibly difficult, but you will probably need to know everything about the processes or material you previously learned about.
Chooi is interesting and funny, but her lectures don't cover everything she expects you to know. My class was very disorganized (I don't know if that was a result of her or the AI's) grades took forever, important stuff wouldn't get posted, tests would be moved around. Lots of extra credit available, but I got pretty frustrated with the class
She is very smart and kind but her class is SO unorganized. I was never sure of her expectations. Provides powerpoints that are useless. Must read to understand, but the chapters are 50 pages long. Gives extra credit, BUT you cannot miss a single class. And the amount of extra credit depends on pop quiz scores. DO NOT TAKE DO NOT TAKE DO NOT TAKE.
Gives an obscene amount of extra credit and genuinely wants everyone to do well. Lectures cover the basics, but time outside of class needs to be taken to get an A (as with most classes). Class was slightly unorganized, but the class was always updated on changes. She made the class interesting and is very funny.
Prof Chooi is funny and helpful. Her class was a great intro class and got me really excited about my major. She offers a ton of extra credit and even gives extra credit exams. Attendance is absolutely mandatory if you want the extra credit. Loved this class!
Chooi was an amazing professor. She gives out extra credit A LOT - attendance (but on a sign in sheet), EC exams, and quizzes. All the extra credit bumped me up from a C+ to an A. Lot of material, but she understands that, so she does well in explaining everything. You can tell that she is passionate about her field of study. 1010 would reccomend
Your grade is determined by three tests so if you are not a good test taker do not take! Extra credit is given but you must attend every class to receive it. Lectures do not cover all that is on tests.
Prof. Chooi is hilarious. Class doesn't follow the book at all but if you study her lecture notes the tests are not too difficult. Very large extra credit opportunity however, you must go to every single lecture if you want the extra credit.
I don't know how prof Chooi could receive bad reviews. She was great for human biology and super easy to understand and hilarious. Plus, she gives extra credit opportunities for everything as long as you have perfect attendance! All assigned hw is ec and you get ec exams in addition to full credit. I thought I would fail but she spoiled us.
Very knowledgeable and friendly. Exams are fair. Lectures are peppered with extended personal anecdotes and long tangents that distract from material and result in a disorganized lecture structure. She offers possibly too much extra credit. Though I like Dr. Chooi, I wish she had used her lectures to teach us more.
She had her AIs do all the work yet she was still the most disorganized professor I've ever had. Sometimes she would talk about the material, other times she would talk about her personal life. She treated us like middle schoolers during tests. We couldn't leave until an hour had passed so you just sat around. We couldn't use the bathroom either.
Chooi is probably the most entertaining Biology professor I will ever have. Her tests are poorly written but they're relatively easy, and given the amount of extra credit that she gives (I went from a 90 to a 98 after EC), I will not complain. Hardly takes any effort to get an A in this class. You won't regret taking it. Don't need textbook.
She is a very intelligent woman, but as an instructor she is subpar. She usually flies through slides and spends a lot of time on things that don't seem all that important. It's easy to do well considering her tests and the obscene amount of extra credit given; however, I'm not confident that I learned what I should have from this class.
she is very funny during her lectures, but also extremely disorganized and for the most part the actual lecture content is presented in a boring way. talks about her personal life and then rushes through the remaining material. she offers an obscene amount of extra credit, so it wasn't actually difficult at all.
You can tell that she is only a professor so she can get her research paid for. She gets all of her lecture slides straight off of the internet. She has no plan when she starts class, and it's very unorganized. She gives extra credit to make up for her inability to teach.
Prof. Chooi does a good job of explaining tough concepts but can be off-putting when she inserts her stance on things such as parenting, abortion, weight, etc.
If u are struggling w a concept, she will flat out tell u she won't help. She doesn't cover everything in lecture that u need for tests. AIs get frustrated too. Very bad teacher. I don't see how anyone passes her class. The info in her lectures doesn't match the info in the book, someone is wrong. She will do the topics earlier than stated.
Professor Chooi must be one of my favorite biology teachers yet. Her class is set up in a manner where you are not having to worry about the delicate balance of your grade and therefore get to focus on the material actually being taught and expand from it. This is not to say that she hands you an A.
I failed biology my first semester, so I retook it with prof Chooi. Her tests were MUCH easier and she gives so much extra credit. You have 3 tests and a final. She drops the lowest test score (besides the final). You can earn up to 10% extra credit just by showing up to class every day. Professor Chooi is hilarious. I would take her again.
Class is super disorganized. Show up to class and rack up as many extra credit points on the quizzes as possible. The material on the tests and quizzes is not clear. But since there is also extra credit on the exams it is not a big deal. The final exam was ridiculous. It was way too specific since the exam was cumulative.
Immunology is quite detailed and technical. Professor Chooi enthusiastically presents the material and tells great stories to keep the class engaged. She emphasizes important points and offers abundant extra credit, which is extremely generous for an upper-level course. Studying in advance is key to achieving high marks, especially on the final.
Dr. Chooi gives crazy extra credit. However, you have to meet very specific things to get the extra credit. She puts the EC in the last possible day. I suppose this way students cannot question mistakes on EC eligibility that she made. She is very lecture heavy but is extremely boring. Test are difficult and very long. Final was over 100 questions.
She is really nice and caring but I would definitely go to her weekly and exam reviews because they really help!
She really offers a lot in the fact that all the quizzes are extra credit and she has an extra credit exam before every real exam and she will drop your lowest exam grade and it could be the final if you wanted it to be!
She posts lectures on Canvas and these are helpful to look through before class! Also, she gives a lot of extra credit! She is funny and really does care about the students and has help available every week!
Very funny and invested in her classes
Funny, good teacher, very knowledgeable. Gives lots of extra credit, just pay attention in class.
If you go to lecture all year she gives a ton of extra credit at the end of the semester, can bump your grade up at a lot. If you go to class the tests aren't too difficult
This class is pretty difficult. She gives lots of extra credit that can boost your grade but the tests are still difficult and there are pop quizzes. The lectures are really boring, I fall asleep sometimes. She is very sweet and super knowledgable but that doesn't make the class any easier. Unless you're a good test taker, wouldn't recommend.
Very knowledgeable on the topic and likes what she teaches. Her class is very lecture heavy without much class engagement. She can be funny but it is usually because of her bluntness. The tests are very manageable. The content is explicitly from class. Reading the textbook really helps. She gives massive extra credit but you need perfect attendance
Professor Chooi is a very intelligent and interesting professor. She does have a strict attendance policy but its not hard to abide by and is a large part of your grade. Theres no homework, but there are tests and quizzes, which arent too bad if you attend lectures and study your notes.
I found her lectures to be extremely boring, since all she does is read off of the lecture slides, which are shared with you. The quizzes are really easy, the AI's give you the answers before you take the quiz. There is no homework, but there is a bunch of extra credit, such as extra credit tests, quizzes, and for attendance.
Very easy class overall. Simply go to class and you will get a ton of extra credit at the end. If you pay attention to lectures, take decent notes, and do the review guides/tests it is an easy A. Plus, Chooi is absolutely hilarious during lectures.
Lectures are very boring but try and pay attention and write notes. Discussion quizzes are easy but the exams are hard. Chooi herself is a very interesting and respected professor. You can tell she is very intelligent and knows a lot about biology.
As a professor, I wasn't a fan of Chooi. She put me to sleep almost every day and all of the info for the exams was already on the powerpoint, so no need to take notes. That being said, it's very easy to get an A. She gives crazy extra credit (primarily based on attendance) and gives practice exams that are almost exactly the same as the real ones.
kind of funny sometimes but so monotoned and absolutely no help. I showed up to her office hours twice and she failed to show both times. After this, I went up to her after class and she just told me to email her. Her tests are impossible and lectures are insanely boring. Avoid.
Chooi is generally really boring in lecture, but randomly has really funny moments sometimes. Whole class is graded on tests, which are basically just straight from the notes. Gives TONS of extra credit.
Dr. Chooi is very knowledgeable about her subject, extremely detailed and slightly boring lectures but I feel like I've learned a lot. Lots of extra credit available if you have perfect attendance, no homework, and overall a very interesting lady. Always gives an extra credit exam the class before the actual exam that was great for studying!
Very unorganized and will randomly skip slides and switch topics mid sentence. The TAs and UTAs were extremely helpful because Choois lectures are random and difficult to follow
I loved her! Shes funny yet knowledgeable, lectures are informative, study guides prepare you for tests, and extra credit is given based on attendance. One of the first classes I took in college and shes still one of my favorites.
Took during COVID. We had to watch video lectures & take a quiz every week. Read the textbook. Her quizzes and exams can be randomly specific so you need to take notes over literally everything. She gives extra credit to boost your final grade by up to 10%. Lectures were boring but informative. Not an easy A, but if u put in the work you'll do fine
There is a lot of extra credit and the tests were a mix of straight from the textbook answers while there was a handful of real life application questions. The discussion quizzes were really easy. I would recommend getting as much extra credit as possible with attendance and the extra credit tests and studying the extra credit exams to pass.
Prof. Chooi is a very good lecturer, funny and interesting. But her assignments and quizzes are far too easy. All quizzes are open note-open internet-multiple choice. We are learning about the complex workings of the cell and I didn't have to study all semester to pull an easy A.
Prof. Chooi, is amazing. Lectures are mandatory especially if you want to receive extra credit towards the end of the semester. This class is test heavy but exams are open note/book. She makes sure all of students succeed!
hated the lectures, no additional materials given to help, TAs were not understanding at all, don't take this class with her
I have never been a fan of biology but Professor Chooi made this class enjoyable. She gives lots of opportunities for you to succeed in this class and is available through email to answer questions and concerns. If you attend class and take advantage of the extra credit there is no reason not to get an A in this class!
I am not someone who is a natural when it comes to science. I found the quizzes and exams despite being open note, internet, and book, were still very difficult. Many of the questions contained multiple correct answers and asked for the "most correct" one. However, she does give a lot of opportunity to get help and gain extra credit with is awesome
Prof Chooi is super nice and really cares about her students. She also gives up to 10% extra credit at the end of the semester. However, her tests can be a little difficult at times, but they are multiple choice. Overall, I would take her again!
All her quizzes and exams were open note, open internet, and open book and all were take-home. Even though it's open to anything, just know you still have to know some of the material taught because some things are not found online! She gives notes and her lectures are about going over them so she gives you hints on what will be on the test.
Take the class with Chooi. She is the best Biology teacher at IU Bloomington. She's literally god-tier. She offers plenty of extra credit and exams are open-note, open computer, and on canvas. The only thing to watch out for about the class is that all attendance is mandatory; for both lecture and discussion.
Gave lot's of extra credit. All exams were taken online at home, open note and open internet search. All quizzes and exam were straight forward and right out of lecture. Discussion is mandatory and you take quizzes that are NOT open note, but they review right before and overall they're easy
She is possibly one of the best Bio teachers here. She was very responsive to student feedback. Her class is lecture heavy, but with all the information she has to get across, it has to be. She would bring in things she found interesting outside of curriculum. The extra credit exams were amazing too. Very easy to get an A in this class.
She skipped around in her lectures a lot which wasn't really conducive to learning. However, if you take bio 112 with her, you will most likely get an A. She's a good person. I don't really think teaching is where her heart is at. She knows a bunch of famous people and will tell you the tea on almost every biologist ever mentioned in her class lol
Chooi was incredibly knowledge about her lectures. While the material is dense and not incredibly interesting I always felt that I understood the material after her lectures. She has many extra credit opportunities and drops the lowest exam and quiz.
She gives a lot of extra credit. The only way to fail this class is to not attend class and miss you major tests. Attendance is not mandatory, it is just extra credit. As long as you take the Extra credit exam, most of the test questions on the test is the same as EC exam that you can just search the internet for the answer
Pretty good professor. She has a doctorate and is so sophisticated and knows a lot on all her subjects. Very lecture heavy. Like the whole class is just sit and stare at the screen while they go over slides, but ig that's every class nowadays. But she is a great professor and offers lots of extra credit and help.
Chooi does not deserve any slander she is such a sweet women who wants all of her students to succeed and always asks for our opinions and ways she can improve. Every class is a powerpoint lecture but she explains everything in depth and goes at a good pace. It is very easy to get an A, most quizzes are open-note and there's a ton of extra credit.
Prof. Chooi is kind and passionate about biology, but I found the lectures to be very fast paced and mundane. I guess this is how an entry level bio course works, though! Lots of extra credit opportunities and small quizzes that help boost your grade, which makes up for the tough exams. Don't fall behind on lectures.
Prof. Chooi was amazing. The course was difficult but definitely nothing I couldn't handle. I had a b+ before all the extra credit was put in at the end of the semester and ended with an a+. Overall amazing professor that will make sure you understand the content and is available outside class.
From the time I spent in class, Professor Choi seemed like a very nice person. However, I ended up having to drop the class. The lectures were incredibly hard to keep up with, even if I read the textbook beforehand. If you are not passionate about bio/not bio major, I don't recommend taking this class.
Helpful, but the lectures can be quick, and it takes a lot of effort to do well in this class.
She genuinely put me to sleep. I thought it was just me at first but I look over at many of my classmates with eyes shut as well. I used to love biology but she made an introductory level so hard for no reason. Her lectures don't help with what you'll be tested on. She offers lots of extra credit though.
dont recommend
Chooi applied a curve for the final that either lowers or raises your exam grade. She does that because she gives out a limited number of As. So if you are on the lower end of As, like a 93.1, the curve she applies will drop you to an A-. Happened to me and my friends. So be careful. Lectures are boring and sleepy. There is extra credit though.
She is fine. Her lectures are probably the most boring lectures youll sit through in your entire college career. At times you'll ask yourself if she even knows what shes talking about. Her lecture attendance is mandatory but she will probably be the worst lecturer you will have in terms of actually teaching. All the work in the class is easy.
Most boring lectures I have ever sat through, put me to sleep every single time. Skips around slides randomly and a bad lecturer in general.
Coming from someone whose last bio class was in my freshman year of high school, this class was a bit challenging but nothing too bad. Professor Chooi has a soft voice so I'd suggest sitting in front for lectures. She gives a lot of extra credit; if you attend lectures and do the quizzes/exams, you can get a B or higher in the class.
The lectures were boring; she talked very quietly, and her slides had too much information. Her exams were mainly based on memorization rather than concept understanding. The exams were really difficult and had very specific questions on small details in her lecture. Please save yourself and do not take her class.
Lectures are very boring mostly reading off of dense slideshows. Exams where not open not and questions were ultra specific points from the slideshows. There was lots of extra credit through extra credit exams and attendance. The class is defiantly doable if you put in the work yourself to learn and memorize information outside of class.
Professor Chooi is very funny and informative in her lectures. Lectures sometimes drag or Chooi may start to ramble a bit, but the lectures are typically great and help with understanding of the material. Very few assignments outside of tests. Very generous extra credit (up to 10%). Prepares students well for tests, and cares about her students.
Only take L112 with Yean Chooi if you already have a PhD in Biology. Her class is incredibly difficult to follow – there is no pattern to her teaching style, it is always completely unclear what you will be tested on, and her presentation skills are terrible for such an important class. Good luck if its too late to switch
Lectures can be a bit dry, but Chooi knows her stuff. Lots of extra credit and exam flexibility to balance it out. unstuck study was a lifesaver for practice questions - definitely recommend using it alongside the textbook.
Lecture heavy but does not always cover material that appears as questions on the test. Many opportunities to gain extra credit in the class, and the quizzes are a great way to practice for the exam. Discussions were very helpful, and the TAs were very accessible for additional help.
Dr. Chooi is a great professor. Although her lectures can be a bit boring, you can tell she cares about the material and knows it well. She clearly cares about her students as well. Overall, this class is pretty easy as long as you study and go to class and discussion. There is also opportunity for a ton of extra credit which is great.
At the start of the year she said, "either you love me or you hate me." Sadly, I disliked her due to the mass amounts of material and poor lecture style it was hard to stay motivated and engaged in the class to succeed well. If you have loads of free time, then take this class, but it's very test heavy with little to no guide on what will be tested
Chooi is a great prof and she's really smart and knows what she's talking about. Attendance is mandatory and if you miss more than 2 classes you cannot receive any extra credit. She's really nice and has great humor. The class itself is a LOT of memorization but other than that it's not bad at all. She also ends class like 40 mins early.
Dr. Chooi is great! The lectures can be a little difficult to keep up with at first, but you get used to it. She always cracks jokes and cares about what she teaches. Just be prepared to study some complex topics and a quick pace. Extra credit exams and attendance are very generous and worth the extra effort. She cares about your success.
Professor Chooi is caring, smart, and funny. She offers multiple opportunities for extra credit up to 10% but you can't have more than 2 absences. It's not impossible to do well in her class, you just have to keep up with her pacing and do a lot of work outside of class.
Bless Prof. Chooi's heart but her lectures are boring and hard to follow. I highly recommend going to class for the attendance grade, but focus on taking notes from the provided slides on canvas at you own pace because she will spend an enormous amount of time on figures that aren't relevant to the quizzes or tests. However, she is kind and caring!
