Extremely surreal hard exams!!!
had him a few years ago - one of the best!
sadistic tests
Interesting lectures. I'm not a computer science major and did not understand a lot, but still I listened. Test was OK.
Made me leave from Computer Scince at Brooklyn College. Sadist, who doesn't know and that is why doesn't explain anything. Horrible teacher, wonder how is allowed to teach?????!!!!! Will remember and curse every time I hear his name!
not clear, boring, hard
The man knows what he is talking about ... hes one of the few great cis professors i have had while at BC
Probably one of the smartest CIS Professors in existance! No exaggeration!
demanding teacher but an excellant professor
The best prof. in the world.
One of the best professors I had in college because I actually learned something useful and interesting in his classes.
Very informative but no help with applications.
Very cool and funny professor. Makes the class very interesting. Teaches fast, but if you willing to follow and learn you’ll know computers.
This guy has only one problem: he knows too much about Computers, but he really does not know how to bring his knowledge across to the student (nor does he care do so). But, I guess this is a common problem of most (over 99%) BC Faculty.
Professor Langsam is very well educated in computers and knows a lot. He is always willing to help you understand the material in or out of class. If you have to take CIS 1.5 i would strongly recommend him.
I highly recommend this professor, he makes the class very interesting, and is very helpful to his students. Attend his classes and make sure you do your assignments and turn them in on time. Doing all this coupled with you applying yourself and dedicate time to studying you will get an A
He is very knowledgeable and experienced in his feild but is fast paced and and fail to hold interest of students sometimes. however,he is a fair marker, tests are multiple choice and easy. just do the practice tests on the website from book. he is helpful with projects tests and assighnmnents EASY
I would def reccommend this prof. He is very nice and extremely helpful. HE teaches very well and is very easy. He gives you projects to do but they are relatively easy and you learn a lot by doing them. Tests are extremely easy. TAKE HIM HE IS THE BEST!!!
I loved his class. He is funny and understandable and yuo will learn a LOT
Great professor, very knowledgeable, does cover a lot of material. I did progressively worse in his class as time went on but not by his doing. He was always willing to help, accessible and encouraging. Class is geared to CIS, math and science majors, so it's probably a bit more challenging than the other 1.5 classes.
Easy Class. Took it online and all you need to do is do all the project and submit them on time. Take both finals and it's a easy A.
He is probably one of the greatest professors in Brooklyn College! He knows a lot, makes his classes very interesting. He gives a challenging programs to write in a different fields: chemistry, biology, medicine, etc. His exams are so easy, and based on the exersises from his work book- so definately buy it.
He one of the best professors in Brooklyn College. his classes are never boring and if you put in the time its pretty simple A.
Professor Langsam is one of the best professors I have had in Brooklyn College. Hes really knowelegable in many diffrent fields- I'm not sure its a easy A but youll do really intresting projects youll learn alot about computer programming, science and plenty of other things.
Langsam is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He teaches very clearly and the class is very interesting. If you keep up with all the work you will do very well on his straight-forward exams. Take him for C++. You will not regret it.
for those taking the science section, it is not easy. Though the tests are straight foward, his assignments are very challenging. You will spend days working on some, and unless u got the programming mind, you will have to seek help! But hey, this guy noes a lot and gives very intereting lectures with information pertaining to the real world.
Although he does know his stuff, i would not recommend taking him, he teaches at a really fast pace and his tests are very hard
Great Professor! Programs are tough to work through but really bring the course together. Test are easy if you can complete the programs with minimal help. He always finds time to help his students even though he is the CISC chair. He really enjoys teaching programming and you see that through his lectures. Makes intro to programming relevant.
great teacher... makes you program a lot but you can get an A if you work hard...but you will have to put in a lot of work
Incomprehensible, assignments weren't clear. Didn't offer any useful help.
Excellent professor. Very clear. Explains very well. Programs require some work. Highly recommended if you are looking to learn something. Fair tests. but you gotta put in some work.
his exam are tough, takes so many points off assignment for silly mistakes , he wants perfection. talks too much about silly stories that i hated so much, takes about an hour to tell a stupid old story from the 70's bring your pillows as soon as he say's " time for another famous story of mind" take nap :)
Terrible, bad grader, takes enormous amount of points of trivial mistakes. Won't help you, and he's is very condescending when asking him for help. Don't take him.
VERY mean. VERY by the textbook. unreasonable and cannot speak to him. Unwilling to help. I was shocked by the way he spoke to some people. Don't know how he is the chair but BC big mistake!
Overall good if you're a very responsible student. You'll need to put many hours into each homework. Tip: if you study from copies of old tests you'll do great on tests & tests are thorough but easier than the HW. He is anal with grading but in the end if you've followed his instructions you will do very well.
You will not do well if you don't put in the effort, but he really cares that his students do well. Also, if you have questions, even if they are beyond the scope of the class, he will be more than happy to talk to you.
i took this class with cogan before, and comparatively he is amazing! You don't need the textbook he will actually TEACH you the material and relate concepts to real life situations. You do have to put in the work. Took him for summer, it was fast paced. 6 assignments 2 midterms and final. I did horrible on the final but still managed to pass.
Langsam is an amazing professor. It's impossible not to understand programming after completing this class, and he will make it interesting and fun too. The homework assignments take A TON of work and time, but it is the only way you will learn to code. He is a great Teacher, but don't expect an easy A!!
This professor did not care about the people who just first having touch with programming. His class is so fast that he could jump form chapter 1 to chapter 7 within 3 classes. This isn't the real pain of his class. The real pain is that he isn't helpful at all. And he does not CURVE GRADES. I have "would take again" tag on him is because I failed.
Only take this class if you're a CISC major. Even if Sahni says to take him, DONT!! Unless you have a heart and major interest in programming, don't take his class, its harder than all other cisc 1110. Esp as engineering major ur stacked w work, and he doesn't curve, and you spend hours doing his programs. NOT WORTH IT if ur taking coding just once
Great teacher
He is not worth it. Took him and did horrible despite putting the most effort into his class. By the second exam, 2/3 of the class had dropped, and the 1/2 of the people left did worse than they expected to. he won't ever curve, or do anything in your favor. If you wanna ruin ur gpa then go ahead. Spent 6+ hours on his programs and still got a C+.
He is a great lecturer, explains everything to you in class and answers any question that you might have. Gives you 2 week to complete your hw, but he is a tough grader. Outside of class he's tough. If you want to pass, go to lecture, practice at home and USE THE WORKBOOK, because most of his questions come from there. Class is time consuming.
no help at all, he explains things a lot then tells you he is not sure if he is right. we learn code in class but never how to trace it but yet the midterm and final is on tracing. barely uses the computer in programing class. just use less
His lectures are benefit and knowledgeable. If you can focus and trace while he is discussing how a program works, then you really "learning something". If you can finish all of his assignments (make sure you understand the assignments), then you have understand C++. Before his exam, finishing his work book can help you get at least 80 above.
This guy is legit. He does not make things easy, but you will not be bored. His anecdotes and humor keep things lively and relevant. If you survive, you will look back fondly.
he is a pretty good lecturer but is a tough grader when it comes to the assignments. The main thing I did not like is that he is highly pessimistic. If you did your assignments and failed the 1st test he would write on your test paper suggesting you to drop the course. No motivation, no referring to tutors, just drop the whole course. more2say...
Professor Langsam is the best professor in the compsi dept. He is definitely not an easy A, but if you work hard you walk out of his class a smarter person, which is the ultimate goal. If you don't take him you are missing out on an educational opportunity!
Looking for the worst professor at bc? you have found him!he is the most unreasonable, unhelpful professor whatsoever. There is no review sheets,no help or any information on what you need to know, you wont have any idea how lost you are until you take his exams and fail, I retook it with a better professor and got an A,you been warned.
VERY VERY Harsh grader. One small mistake on assignment makes me worry I will get a whopping -10. Or if he feels like it he will give you 0. Very strict too. I learned 8/10 of the material but unfortunately I did not pass. if I rem correctly, assignment 33%,2midterms33%, and final 33%.
If you do the work on time, study for the exams and come to class, youll do fine. The professor says anyone can learn Java, its just how much work they put in that counts.
need to explain things better.
He has a lot of assignments for you to do. Assignments have nothing related to the exams and we have no review sheet or review exam to prepare for the exams. We are all on our own. He is very unreasonable. Just don't take his classes otherwise you will find out you are wasting your money and time!
most unreasonable a professor can possibly be gives zero partial credit, literally looks for ways he could take off points. From what I understand is that he is only good if you have previous coding experience, otherwise stay away even if Sahni tells you to take him, you can still choose any other professor dont make the mistake i made you will fail
The class should have a lab, but he just lectures for 2 hours straight! That is not good at all when having immediate feedback is key to learning how to code. That said, you will code & trace by yourself outside of class most of the time which becomes too heavy as the topics become harder. Not worth it if this is your first coding class.
More than half of the class failed. I did everything he asked. But even if my program worked, he would still give me a 60 or 70 penalizing the littlest of things! We don't even do programming in class. He just talks for hours! It's like teaching students to draw w/o letting them draw & giving feedback.
He gives detailed lectures and answers any questions. People complain about him finding the smallest details in their codes, but one small incorrect comma can affect the whole code, so it's appropriate. He takes attendance every time, but his exams are based off of the workbook he tells you to get, so as long as you do it, you'll be fine.
I don't understand why he has such bad reviews here. He is literally willing to look over your assignments early, so he will catch your mistakes and let you know beforehand. It is your responsibility to check your work. He is an extremely clear teacher, who actually *teaches* the material in a very understandable way. His class is worth taking.
There's a reason most people fail his class. He's really smart, but a good teacher he's not. He lectures for two hours and teaches so little each class. The homework are almost impossible to do based on lectures alone, so you're going to have to go online and teach yourself. If you want to pass and actually learn, I do not suggest him.
Gives no partial credit whatsoever, "If your program is not period correct, then it is wrong," I took this class with another professor and got an A. He is not a good teacher, smart guy for sure though. If Sahni forces you to take him, DO NOT, he will make you fail just like I and many others here have. This professor is ridiculously unreasonable.
Java is a tough program, and his exams are difficult, but if you practice from his workbook, take notes during class, and actually try to do the homework you'll pass. He offers to check over homework before you submit it and also review what you got wrong after an exam. Also very considerate with extensions. Just communicate and you'll be ok.
Condescending isnt the half of it. It feels like youre trying to talk to a self indulgent deity whos vagueness fits a toddler. His so-called candidness exerts a disgusting attitude that exceeds harsh criticism and is more insulting. Tries to gaslight students and blames them for his lack of specificity. How is he the department chair?
Rude and arrogant. Might give you advice that you don't even ask for, and it's not necessarily a helpful one. Clearly has developed an ability to determine who is smart and who isn't.
He is great at teaching the material in a very down to earth and understandable way. He is super clear about expectations. Just follow what he is asking for, and you will do very well. And listen to his classes since they're very useful. He is also extremely helpful for anything you need related to getting your CS degree - he will work with you!
I think Langsam really believes he is helping students which is nice but he is one of the most condescending people I have ever met. He has good lectures but when it comes to teaching he offers little support. Strict when it comes to what he wants. He will not answer questions. Start here if you want to see why the CS program is mediocre at best.
He's out of touch, unpleasant, and one of the reasons why I regret coming to bkc for cs. I'm so glad I'm transferring out, most of the profs in the program just do not care.
You will learn a lot in this class and although Proffessor Langsam may be a bit nit-picky about assignments, this is something good to get used to in an intro class. Exams are based on his workbook- study it, do examples and you'll do well overall.
This professor could be very rude and disrespectful. He told us that the masks were preventing oxygen from getting to our brains. Rude... right?! Anyways, I did well in his class because I took on a lot of additional time doing the workbook and homework. If you need to take him, take great notes and put the work in. It is not impossible to get a C
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE!!!!!! LET ME EXPLAIN HE DOES NOT UPLOAD ANYTHING TO BLACKBOARD HE DOES NOT ACCEPT ASSIGNMENT EMAIL FOR EMAIL OR BLACKBOARD HE WANTS ASSIGNMENTS DONE IN A CERTAIN WAY AND IT'S VERY CONDESCENDING ONE OF THE WORLD'S PROFESSORS I HAVE EVER HAD AND THAT SAYS A LOT
My review got removed, wont stop me. He's the reason that there are numerous low rating professors at cs that still have their jobs. dont be fool by the good ratings. if he is so good why is he the only class that is available for this fall? grueling exams, no help, No curves, condescending.dont know how he is chairman, begging u dont take him.
The rudest teacher I have ever had the misfortune of meeting. He is condescending and has zero tolerance for error, while making many mistakes himself. When his expectations aren't met, he makes sure to tell everyone that they should feel bad and to drop out of his class. Don't take him unless you like being treated as a subhuman.
He take too many points off! I make one mistake and get zero . He make me want to go sky . Waste of time ..
I can't understand why he makes us use his personal website over Blackboard. He never updates it and you need to calculate your grade yourself. Not to mention his website is an insult to your eyes. It looks like something a ten year old made for his minecraft server in 2010. How this guy is dept. head while being so behind the times is beyond me.
I knows you've probably read the reviews and thought "but maybe I can do better". You won't. Not only does the professor's demeanor border on intolerably arrogant, his lectures are even less of a help. He will do his best to make you regret taking his class every time you're failed for small syntax errors.
I took this professor and I am coming back to tell y'all don't take this professor unless you are some GENUIS. I took this professor and omg his exam I failed big time, nothing like what he taught in class and he even made some mistakes while grading the exam too like huh??? I wanted to change majors but thank god I retook the class w a better prof
Yedidyah is hilarious and inspirational. Hilariously disrespectful and arrogant, and inspired me to want to swap majors. Complete waste of time. Avoid at all costs.
The bar for teaching CompSci at Brooklyn College must be pretty low if this is the head of the department. What a joke lol.
definitely knowledgeable but his attitude makes his classes unbearable needs an ego check
He's willing to answer any question and gives feedback on your assignments and exams, work is light, and attendance is not mandatory. Still, it is encouraged to be present to understand better. If you are willing to put the time and care into the class, then this is for you.
Despite being an intro class, DO NOT take Langsam if you don't know how to code. He tests you on the least important, smallest details from class. He takes points off the smallest reasons. Even if your program runs 100% fine, you will lose 5-15 points if your code is not to his standard. The homework are all worded weirdly. Just take someone else.
doesn't use an online management system. coding assignments are to be printed. expect to write large programs on paper for exams. docks points for basic syntax errors. just reads off of slides, doesn't really teach. overall, he's old with very outdated concepts towards CS. not a very effective teacher, and has bad bedside manner.
Avoid him and take any other professor. Half of the class failed
You will write code on paper with your pen. Guy is out of this world and will do everything he can to fail you. 10 of my classmates failed this class. The most boring and useless lecture.
He grades very unclear, very easy to make mistakes on the test. written in a way where even if you know the basic idea of the answer, you are given little room for error. all code is to be written on paper yet still takes 10-15 points off per test for syntax errors. Sometimes takes random points off of an exam without a clear reason as towards why
AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS !!!! HE tries to fail every single student. Too many students failed his class.
NO NO NO don't read these positive reviews because his class is the worst class i even taken. You will never get A or B. If you are lucky, you will get C because his tests are too difficult and have nothing to do with his lectures
Very rude and disrespectful. If you ask him any questions, he will never answer. He will make it look like he didnt see you raising your hand or didnt heare u. Dont take him u will fail
Stay away from this professor you will not learn anything and fail his class
Where do I even begin with Mr. Langsam. I walk away from this class feeling relieved to know that I will never have a professor worse than him ever again. Absolutely avoid him if possible. Unless you are part of the engineering program, in which case you are forced to take him. If you are an engineering student, I will pray for you.
The professor is okay when it comes to teaching. Sometimes you'll find his class engaging and other times you will zone out. His homework is good if you come to enjoy learning java, and he curves grades nicely (I honestly thought I'd get a B). My only problem is his use of sexual jokes from time-to-time when he goes into history and examples.
He's not respectful. No grading rubric. Assigns his own *expensive* book as the only 'mandatory' text. He peers around the room and matching the looks with the name. Without a rubric, he's matching the looks/face of a student and youll just get what you get. I don't know if an A is ever given out by him, a must-know if you're super GPA-oriented...
This was honestly one of the worst professors I've ever had in my life. Steer clear unless you want to bomb your GPA.
The absolute worst professor I have ever had. I cannot believe he runs the CS department. I have scored high on every homework, but the midterm is absolutely useless and 75-100 questions on the smallest details learned from the textbook. He is extremely rude and wants you to fail. I have a very high GPA and he is going to tank it. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
If i'm being honest this was probably the worst class i've ever taken that it almost seems predatory that they would have this professor run a needed class for students to graduate from business school. He will not help you, while comp sci is already difficult as it is all he will tell you to do is read the textbook for anything that you need.
The WORST professor ever. Doesn't help you when emailing him and replies in a snarky, demeaning, disrespectful way. Please dont take him!!
Personality-wise, the reviews are right, however, grade-wise, majority passes, most stay for the entirety of the semester, many even do well (>B). Atdnce not req., grind the workbook, do the hws, lecture exams are easier than the final (dept), somewhat lenient grader, generous curve too. Not even close to the monster the reviews made Langsam to be.
Professor Langsam's class was a real challenge, but with dedication and the right study tools like Unstuckstudy, I managed to get through it. The workload was heavy, but I found the lectures engaging overall.
As the VICTIM of this... professor, words alone won't suffice to express the suffering one had to endure. I would rather major in art history than ever step foot in any of his classes again, coming from an engineering major. However, I have good news for all of you as we are free from his reign, since he will be retiring soon.
He accepts submissions only be email. Half the time he doesn't get them. When he doesn't get them, you have to email him once a day because he doesn't respond 90% of the time. When he does respond, he is unwilling to grade past submissions. I did all of my assignments days early. All of them were graded as though I'd submitted them late. Don't take
We don't use blackboard in this class. All he does is email and lacks communication with his students. I had trouble using Microsoft Access and he vaguely responded to help me. Then when I got help from a classmate, he wouldn't accept the assignments. Very annoying.
Terrible professor, never responds to emails, even when I reached out multiple times. Assignments were marked as missed, despite me providing clear proof that I submitted them on time. He still refused to grade them. The exams are 100 questions and focused on minor details on the material.
