Yelena is a very knowledgeable professor. However, she tends to be overly wordy and her lectures are difficult to listen to. She was formerly a professor to MBAs so right now she is adjusting to teaching freshman. She's not a mean teacher, but she is very critical and hard to listen to.
Agreed. Yelena is a very tough teacher and she is a former MBA teacher. She is not at all animated in lectures, I don't think I've seen her move out from behind her desk many times. It's a Carlson class so it's obviously tough, but she doesn't help much. She is also highly critical and belittles students at times... Don't take her!!
I agree that Hydrie can be wordy and not the most animated or engaging in teaching style, but she covers the material pretty well, and adjusts the material in exams to match what we do in class. She can be tough and critical of students, but all within reason, and she's actually pretty approachable and understanding. Overall, I would recommend her.
Although Hydrie isn't the easiest of professors, she presents the material very well. She is very approachable when talking to her one on one. Class participation influences your overall grade, as well as attendance.
Professor Hydrie tends to expect the work of MBA students to find its way into that of freshman students. It is difficult to know what she is expecting out of assignments. Tests are VERY hard. Never offers positive remarks, only negative critiques - which can take a toll on a student's confidence. I would try to get a different professor.
The number one thing in this class is to stand out to Hydrie in a good way. If you are involved in class, go to her office hours, and show that you are trying, she will grade your papers and your group work easier. The exams can be tricky but are doable, and are always curved.
Hydrie honestly isn't bad. However, her quizzes are sometimes tricky and sometimes you can argue your point, but many times she is right simply because she said so. If you take good notes during her lectures you will do great. She covers everything on the tests and for the most part is pretty easy to follow if you pay attention.
Dr. Hydrie knew the material and taught with enthusiasm. She was never unprepared for class. Class success depended upon listening and participating in lecture, not memorizing definitions in the textbook. I did not witness from her a negative attitude/lack of interest in the class. Definitely a notch above a typical GenEd professor.
Hydrie will make sure that if you are a hard worker, you can pass her class. However, her quizzes are often unclear and the readings are not as important as the lectures. It is a lot of work, but if you can show her that you are serious, she will help you.
Yelena is tough, which is what you signed up for in Carlson. It is basically death by powerpoint, except for a very small amount of fun in class activities. While the topic is interesting, she makes the time crawl. Obviously passionate about the topic, but not funny, entertaining or really engaging. Can be a little sharp when critiquing.
Yelena is professional, and not personable. She goes by the book, and I usually found myself falling asleep or zoning out during her lectures because they were very dry. She gave lot of opportunities to participate based on the readings but there was so much homework that I couldn't keep up and the book seemed to be mostly common sense.
Worst professor ever. Very rude, arrogant, makes kids feel bad about themselves, never wrong, unclear expectations for essentially every assignment and then she tells you what she wants once you hand it in. Often tells you your ideas were "disappointing" to her. Avoid this walking textbook at all costs. Any other MGMT 1001 prof is better then her.
Dr Hydrie is a very kind person but her lectures are rarely clear or concise. I and many others in my section struggles to maintain focus as a result of her lecturing style. Her feedback is harsh and pointed, giving little In the way of real development. She does do a good job of staying in contact outside of class. Sadly I wouldnt retake with her
Yelena is the most frustrating professor I've ever encountered. Instead of seeing us as freshmen with a lot to learn, she saw us as dumb and even used the words "stupid" and "over privileged" to describe us. She gives rude feedback that isn't constructive, and is very unclear on expectations until after the due dates of assignments. Do not take her
Yelena is super dry lecturer, which sucks because you have to go to class. Don't bother buying the textbook; everything you need to know is on the lecture slides. Your grade is pretty much decided by the tests and the group project. Beware of the group project: she is absolutely brutal. On the bright side, there is a ton of extra credit.
Yelena's tests are very hard even though the material isn't very difficult and common sense. This class has too many projects for being a 1001 class. There is a decent amount of assignments besides the course long projects. A lot of the projects seemed meaningless like book club and the pulse papers. Just be prepared to work a lot!
She is boring. I want to fall asleep so badly in this class but I cant because you have to participate. The quizzes and finals are mostly based off of her lectures but she feels the need to add videos to that also. I never contribute in this class unless I know Im 100% right because she shoots you down harshly.
Hydrie is clearly a very intelligent woman and not so intimidating if you talk to her one on one. She will love you if you participate frequently and participation is a pretty decent chunk of your grade so start raising that hand. Lots of projects, assignments, papers, etc. but is a good reality check for your first real Carlson class.
Taking MGMT 1001 with Dr. Hydrie is a great way to be introduced to the Carlson School of Management. This is a tough class, but you can get a good grade if you put effort into it. Dr. Hydrie is always willing to help. The lectures can be a bit dry at times, but it's important to pay attention. Review everything, anything could be on the tests.
Professor Hydrie is approachable outside of lecture. She respects people who put forth effort. However, the class itself is a load of work. There are multiple projects and deadlines to keep track of at all times. There are study guides for tests but they don't cover much of them. Treat this like a 5 credit class.
Very frustrating professor. She is a nice lady and easy to speak with outside of class, but even when you put forth hard work and a lot of effort she is a very tough grader and always finds a reason to dock points. Tests are difficult. Participation is important, not only for your grade but she will remember you better if you speak up.
She is an extremely nice person but a hard grader and tests are trickily worded.
Prof Hydrie is a competent teacher. Lectures are a bit dry but she conveys a lot of the information you need. The tests and quizzes are written kind of weird and are often meant to be a sort of trick so beware. Attendance is graded fairly heavily. Lots of readings. Overall, good class and teacher, but a bit difficult and heavy load.
Worst professor that i've had. Not personable, rude, busy work that is completely unnecessary and tries to purposely trick you on exams
Actually sucks. Worst professor I have every had in my four years at Carlson. Unfair and thinks that her opinion and thoughts are the only thing that goes. Difficult class, unclear guidelines, unclear quizzes, and unorganized course work. Quizzes, Negotiations & other assignments are posted days before they are due. Hate this class.
Most work is ever given by a professor and incredibly difficult tests. Feels much more like 5 credits than 3 credits.
Class does not feel like a 3 credit mandatory class. Material is boring already and she makes it 10x worse. Way too many projects and purposely tries to trick you on tests.
Teacher only talks about Netflix the entire time. You might want to try to learn about some stuff that might be on the test, no. Only Netflix. No practice tests. Extremely boring. Also 3 credit class with hours of work assigned before each class.
Avoid at all costs. Huge workload and no practice tests, and tells you to study "everything".
Huge workload. Boring teacher and cold teacher who thinks that her 3 credit class is the most important class you'll ever take.
Worst teacher and worst class I've ever taken. Teacher does a fantastic job of making the already boring and trivial course material not only more boring, but harder than it would need to be! Take this class if you want to come out hating anything to do with business or management.
Very difficult class and assumes students will know everything and gives out work like her class is worth 6 credits. Before class, there is usually around 2 hours of work and all while working on a huge paper and a group project. She also gives additional papers that are due the next day. By any means, do not take her class.
Ridiculous amount of homework and projects for a 3 credit introductory class. Teacher is cold and you never know what is important or not because she likes to spend class rambling about things that are intuitive but then expects application to things where it is the opposite.
Incredibly difficult class and loves to make it difficult even though it is a mandatory class. Every class requires hours of work and videos before and reading. Notes before class are completely useless and are complete busywork. Midterm is everything and she gives some example questions but no answers making them useless
First off, the pre-class work is completely unnecessary and just busy work because she covers the important parts. Makes you spend hours answering 5-10 questions a day and 20-30 pages of useless notes. Also assigns surprise papers where they are barely mentioned and due the next day. Very easy to miss these papers. Difficult tests and projects.
You wouldn't expect a mandatory 3 credit class to be difficult at all, but Yelena has something else to say about that. Loads of reading and notes, extremely boring class that barely teaches you anything. Everything is intuitive but she tries her best to make it confusing. Avoid her and maybe this class at all costs.
3 credit class that you don't have a choice to not take? Yelena is going to make it as hard as she can. Plenty of readings before class and two useless projects. Tough grader and lectures are torturous.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Makes a 3 credit intro Management course way harder and more work than it needs to be. Also purposefully tries to trick you on exams.
Classes are dry and boring. Yelena makes it her personal mission to make the already dry course material even dryer, and possibly tries to get freshmen to lose all interest in business!
Far and away the worst professor and class I've ever taken. Unclear assignments graded completely arbitrarily and loads of reading.
There are so many papers that I am surprised this class isn't writing intensive. Her lectures are extremely dry and will trick you on exams. To top it all off, she tells her ta's to grade harshly. Treat this class like a 5 credit.
Wish I could give her a 0/5. Genuinely hope she gets fired. Lectures could not be more dry. She tries to trick you with her test questions, she instructs her TA's to grade assignments harder than reasonable, pointless projects. Yelena also does this thing where she pretends MGMT 1001 is an important class, rather than a pointless mandatory general.
Went through the first half of the semester taking good notes because the entire time Yelena was saying that the test would be open note. Right before the test she says you're only allowed one side of one sheet of paper. Not sure if she actually thinks thats how we would interpret open note. Tests are meant to trick you.
Most boring professor imaginable. She loves to assign ridiculous amounts of bland useless reading. Just don't take her.
Actually sucks. Worst professor I have every had in my four years at Carlson. Unfair and thinks that her opinion and thoughts are the only thing that goes. Difficult class, unclear guidelines, unclear quizzes, and unorganized course work. Useless reading.
Terrible introduction to Carlson. I assumed since it was a three-credit mandatory class it wouldn't be the hardest thing ever, but it is. Workload feels around five credits, plenty of reading that is a complete joke as well. No help on test prep, just instructs you to "know everything she says" and always brags about going on vacation.
Terrible professor. Grades everything harshly, despite the fact that the entire class is essentially bogus. She also has a habit of having assignments assigned one day, due the next, that she will not mention during the class. Assigns lots of reading, is terrible at summing things up succinctly in class.
Incredibly confusing and will seldom mention assignments that are assigned and then give zeros if you turn them in a minute late. Not an understanding teacher at all. Assigns 4 papers, a pretty large group project throughout the year as well. Tons of busy work reading that takes hours a week in addition to these projects. Makes a mandatory difficul
Yelena makes this class even more boring than it is designed to be. I could not imagine a worse way of being introduced to the business school than taking MGMT 1001 with Yelena.
She is boring. I want to fall asleep so badly in this class but I can't because you have to participate. The quizzes and finals are mostly based on her lectures but she feels the need to add videos to that also. I never contribute in this class unless I know I'm 100% right because she shoots you in the harshest way possible.
Readings are long and dry, so you may try to just pay extra attention in lecture. Good luck. Lectures are possibly more boring than the reading, and she makes sure to go off topic. Grades your assignments unreasonably harsly.
This course is very rigorous and the exams have nothing to do with what we learned in class. Dr. Hydrie told us that she would try to trick us on the exams and that they would be difficult, but there were some items that all of the students don't recall being in any of the material covered. She was an angry and rude professor.
This class felt like a punishment. Felt like we were always in trouble and being yelled at. She will come at your life from what you watch on Netflix to what you did over fall break. 10/10 is the hardest class I have taken. You can take all the notes and do all the extra work but still fail the tests. The driest lecture i fell asleep most classes
Told students that they should bring their papers to her for further review, however, would likely result in deducted points because she is a more strict grader. Disrespected/ embarrassed students presenting or answering questions in class. A friend sitting next to me answered a question word for word out of the book but and she said it was wrong.
I took the version of this class that Included labs. The lectures were not super interesting, just kinda taking notes the whole time for your quizzes every two weeks. The class only has one exam which is the final. The labs kinda sucked but if you have a good group you will be fine.
My biggest complaint is the learning environment she creates. She is overly wordy with her lectures which confuses many of the students. She is also highly critical and not afraid to embarrass or belittle students. Because of this students are intimidated to speak up and then she criticizes how little is said. Not a comfortable learning environment
hydrie is a nice person I think. she is much easier to talk to one-on-one after class than during. participating in class is rather uncomfy and her tests are straight up gnarly. they're not all that intuitive (ex: choose the BEST answer of other correctish answers) and there's no real way to prepare. if you want to secure an A pick another prof
Prof. Hydrie is a decent person, but a horrible professor. Her tests are written to trip you up and she grades the other assignments tough. I would do whatever you can to avoid taking her class. At the end of the day her class is possible to pass if you pay attention but save yourself the trouble and go somewhere else.
DROP & PICK ANOTHER PROF. Very inconsiderate & rude. So harsh with assignments, you can't prepare for her exams bc she purposely writes it to fail you. We don't do pop quizzes but we do pop presentations in class, so sorry if you struggle with speaking up front. The amount of writing & projects and this isn't a 4/5 credit class? Avoid her please.
She seems to be a nice person but does go out of her way to grade things harder than seems necessary for an entry-level management class. Study guides are a good outline of what you need to know, but it is a VERY general outline when it comes to tests that are quite tough.
The class is very end of the semester heavy with a group presentation, paper, and final exam. It doesn't seem like she wants her students to succeed as she gives very little help on test preparation. Tests are hard and not curved much. Very hard but not impossible A. Pick a different professor if possible.
The class itself is not horrible. The tests are insanely hard. It is one of those tests where there are 2 possible right answers and you just have to guess the right one. I do not recommend taking this class with Dr. Hydrie.
Her tests are very difficult and are mostly on things she expects you to learn outside of class. She also doesn't offer great feedback during the major project.
Lots of writing reflections, pre and post class with lots of reading. Unnecessary amount of work for a 2 credit class. You need a 96% in the class to get an A and assignments are rarely given a grade higher than 90%. Hydrie is nice and she seemed to genuinely care about me as a student, but I felt like that class was just too long and stressful
Hydrie is the worst professor I have ever had. It seems like she has no passion for teaching and can not for the life of her engage a single student in the classroom. No one ever raised their hand when she asked. When laptops were out during activities she would walk around the room policing to make sure no one was on a different tab.
She constantly threatened the class and she had very long lectures about her own life stories. Also most of her assigned readings and videos or podcasts showed very little diversity in culture. I took a 1 credit class and the homework she gave was frankly ridiculous. I do not recommend taking any of her classes.
Hydrie lectures for the entirety of the 100 minute lecture and constantly harps that the Universities policy is that for a two credit class, there should be four hours of homework done each week outside of class. She polices the room and shuts off laptops to ensure there's no multitasking. Take ANY other prof for BA1011. Way too much work!!!
I want students to understand that you have to put extreme effort into this class and it is still not guaranteed that you will receive a good grade. From what you learn and take away, there is virtually no reason that this level of difficulty should be present.
She threatens the class and runs it like a dictator. Is very bias around touchy subjects and grades way too harsh for a 2 credit class. She will call people out for the smallest things, and will hold grudges unlike anyone I've ever met. Do Not Take!
Do not take a class with her. She grades harshly and gives out only a handful of 10/10s on assignments. She makes the class a lot harder than it should be and she's very condescending. Her lectures are long, and she even goes over the time of 100 minutes sometimes.
currently 42 people gave her a 1/5. That accurately reflects her as a teacher. If you have her, drop out asap. Should fire her bc a teachers job is to make a student want to learn, not piss them off and make them hate the class bc of her attitude and condescending ways of teaching. people hated the class solely bc of the teacher and not material
the most valuable takeaway i received from this teacher was the number of ceiling tiles in her classroom. there were 392.
Negotiation Skills is an awesome class and I've learned so much from Yelena. A unique where you negotiate on Tuesdays and debrief on Thursdays. She's very smart and always gives quality feedback
The professor was very nitpicking with the grading up to the point where she gave me points off for writing too much. I do not recommend this class.
Hydrie failed to teach as she proceeded to ramble about things irrelevant to the class and left us with no time to network with others, work on projects, and yell when someone took out their electronics. She yelled at us for not knowing each other's names when she didn't know the majority of us. I am extremely disappointed with how this class went.
Professor Hydrie was not clear on expectations and provided little time for discussion by lecturing heavily the entire class period. Had unreal expectations for what should be an easy and enjoyable course. Made other students volunteer to rate their peers throughout class as well, an unbelievable task. Not enjoyable, do not recommend.
This is by far the worst professor I have ever had in my entire life. The lectures are very boring and long which is unnecessary. She has a very bad attitude and thinks she knows everything. Takes 0.4 off for the smallest things. Overall this is a 2 credit class that has 5x as much work as my 4 credit class.
For being an entry-level 2 credit course there was way too much work. Yelena can be downright nasty at times and is very condescending. I have friends who have taken this class with other professors and have said it's perfectly fine. This is a Yelena problem. Just take another section.
My encounter with Professor Hydrie was a nightmare. Their teaching style was demoralizing. They were dismissive towards students, making it intimidating to seek help. Grading was outrageously picky. The overall experience was frustrating and unproductive.
MGMT 4044 Negotiate Tuesdays and Debrief Thursdays. She is very knowledgeable on the subject and gives good feedback. I think a lot of people don't like her just because she's very honest and will use people as examples. I didn't mind that at all I actually appreciated it. This class teaches really good life skills.
Dr. Hydrie was an amazing professor who really cares about your success. The people saying that she was too strict or lectured too much are all freshman who aren't used to college classes. Grading was clear and the assignments were easy.
Little homework heavy but honestly not too horrible. Lectures were long but not that bad. My problem with her is she was really demeaning and seemed to assume the worst of students. No trust.
When I first realized that Yelena would be my Leading Self & Teams professor, like many, I was terrified due to her horrid reviews on RMP. However, I was pleasantly surprised when I learned she is a good professor. You should be fine if you participate in class and put effort into class assignments. Be prepared for boring lectures, though.
Passive aggressive and condescending to her students. If you get on her bad side watch out cuz shell never let you live it down. Avoid her. She's on some kind of power trip every class.
- Good lecturer - Clear expectations for assignments - Great feedback on work - Caring and understanding - Accommodating of students' needs - Knowledgeable of material - Engages the class in discussion - Theory, practice, and reflection built into the course
Worst professor I have ever had. Very tough grader. It is hard to get 100% on assignments because she is very nit-picky. Way too much work for a two-credit class. Don't take her.
I believe the course could have been taught in a more engaging manner. It's hard to get 100% on assignments, but you'll probably still get an A if you show up to class and do the hw. Unfortunately, I felt like Dr. Hydrie assumed the worst in her students' intentions, but I didn't have any extremely negative experiences with her.
The only thing in this class worth writing 500 words about is Yelena's lack of self-awareness. Take it with somebody else.
Not a kind person. What everyone is saying is true. I saw the reviews and said it can't be that bad. Boy was I wrong. Very demeaning, very disrespectful, and holds grudges for the entire semester. Does indeed think and assume the worst of her students. I don't understand why she is still teaching. Brutal Professor.
Everything that is wrong with Carlson in one professor. Absolutely terrible all the way around. Avoid like the plague.
Worst professor at the UofM hands down. This professor lectures about "teamwork" and "communication" for over an hour straight like we are in elementary school and then gets upset when we lose focus and daze off. Please for the love of god avoid this professor and do everything to not get her. she is also aggressive and got mad cus i didnt say "Dr"
Please don't take her if there are other professors available. I took her last semester and, like many others, thought "She cannot be that bad". Boy, was I wrong. I had more homework and busy work in that class than in two 4 credit classes COMBINED. Super hard grader with very high expectations if you want to get an A. Her TA's also grade heavy.
extremely tough grader. when you submit an assignment you get points off that were never even in the directions.
Worst class to end my week with. Dread going to the class. Class is only two credits but get ready for a six page paper and 14 minute group project and six page group paper on top of usual assignments at the end of the class.
Is a great professor that truly cares about her students. Yes, the class is difficult because she wants you to learn. Has amazing experiences that she can truly impart on students.
Doesn't care about students, assigns stuff with little explanation and grades intensely.
Yelena has been by far the worst professor I have taken. It's a 2 credit course yet she grades it like we are PHD students. Every time an assignment was graded I thought it couldn't get any worse. Pray that you get good team members for group projects or you will do all of the work your self. Overall terrible experience, take another class.
Very very difficult professor. Lectures are very long and boring, and she always talks about the same things. She assigns ton of busy work, and grades super hard, and makes the grading criteria unclear. The TA also grades just as hard. She is very demeaning and has an ego. This class was more work than 2 of my 4 credit classes combined.
The Mgmt of Teams class was online, outdated, relied heavily on pre-recorded videos that appeared to have been created years ago. She was a very strict grader which felt unfair given the lack of updated instruction or support. The course was unnecessarily challenging and frustrating for students seeking a meaningful learning experience. DO NOT TAKE
She was a fairly bad teacher who did not care about her students and honestly prayed for their downfall. Her assignments were a lot of work, but even when you spend a lot of time on them, you still do badly. Be prepared to never see 100% on any of your assignments. She takes backhanded compliments to the next level. Has group quizzes on readings.
She isn't a very good teacher, grades hard and has unnecessary lectures that are insanely long. You will not get a single 100% on any assignment you submit, no matter how much work you do for it. She never cancels class even if there is a ton of snow and ice, or if she is sick. Rain, snow, or shine, she will have this weak ahh class no matter what.
I didn't know she was rated this poorly but, her TA genuinely will give you 0.5-1 pts off of a reflection even if he leaves “Nice job on your Reflection!” You will not be able to get 100% on individual reflections or assignments. She's a nice person as long as you don't get on your bad side. Sometimes the lectures can be very long and boring.
She is an OKAY professor. Considering this is a first-year course, the grading is very harsh. You have one big group project but not until later in the semester and the rest of the class is basically reflections and there are quizzes every class on readings done in groups. The lectures are also VERY long and boring.
Very tough grader but a very nice person. Does not give out 100%.
Doctor Hydrie was a super nice professor, though don't expect her kindness to be reflected in her grading. You have have to go "above and beyond" for an A, with a "meets expectations" getting you a B at best. The course itself was easy, but expect putting in unnecessary levels of effort on basic assignments to get full credit.
She was such a hassle. I went to all the classes and participated in all the classes just to receive an A- for attendance. Furthermore, she graded extremely harshly for a 1000-level class. She also said we must refer to her as Dr. Hydrie until SHE tells us we're on a first-name basis. Which was the weirdest introduction for a professor ever.
Leaves it up to the TA to grade everything, but she believes an A is overachiever, not just an average good student. Really have to work and put effort into her assignments to get a decent grade. She as a professor, becomes better and more personable as the semester goes on, though.
The class is much harder than it needs to be. She will assign long videos and readings to do before class. The rubric will also not be very specific but you must exceed her very high expectations for a good score.
Hard to get 100% on assignments, mostly TA graded. Long, boring lectures that go to the end of class. Pray you get a good group for the project. Answers to her questions have to be what she thinks is right. Lots of reflection papers and readings. Attendance was taken from quizzes based on readings.
Nice lady but super petty TA whos a harsh grader, class material isn't really interesting just basic communication norms.
Her rubrics and instructions are almost never aligned correctly. Her TA doesn't question it at all when they're the ones grading. The class time is 100 minutes. it can get really boring in there when all she does is talk. Be prepared for ALOT of writing. She will NEVER give out A's even when you complete the most simplest tasks.
She is a nice person, but that is not reflected in the grading at all. Will never give out perfect scores, always will take off points even if its a 10 point assignment and will give like a 9.25. Long lectures and they can be boring sometimes. Group project is chill as long as you get a good group.
Grading is harsher than it needs to be. Professor said it's based on "effort" but it's like at the end of the day of course I'm turning in what I think is quality work. Also didn't seem like professor did any of the grading? Subjected to the TAs. Only thing that was graded by professor was group presentation.
