He is a nice guy and most the time will be there for your questions. Sometimes his lectures are hard to follow. Overall a good teacher. will not accept ANY late work, no matter WHAT. Also never miss a class, or you will fall behind.
I found him really encouraging and patient he explains meterial well. He was very willing to help me during office hours. I would take his class again if I need the another math class. I'm not really good at Math he helped me get through.
Yen is the best! He goes above and beyond to help his students. He prints us all our notes just like high school. Textbook just used for homework. We did classwork with other students which was surprisingly very helpful. Really young and remembers being a student. Really approachable and helpful. Will gladly clarify one on one. Take him!
He is HILARIOUS! calc was fun over the summer. tests come from homework. do the homeworks, classwork and you are perfectly fine!
Took Math 150 over Summer, which is condensing 16 weeks of work in 6. Prof. Chou is definitely one of the better math teachers I've had. That being said he makes you work for your grade. Tough grader, but he truly cares for his students and does offer extra credit for showing up to saturday lab and doing presentations. Great teacher.
Take Professor Chou if you can. You won't regret it. Very helpful, and takes the time to ensure that everyone understands.
He is an amazing teacher, he explains the material very clearly and willing to answer questions. He gives practice exams for you to study off of that are optional but do them because they are just like the exams! A lot of homework but you get credit for it which helps your grade. Easy A but you have to work hard. Does NOT except late work.
Yen is one of the best Math teachers for sure. He's clear about what's needed to pass his class from the beginning. The way his lectures and HW's are organized benefit you. Expect a decent amount of HW. You can't cruise by and skip his class. He covers a lot of material, but goes at a good pace. He won't take late work. Great teacher
Mr. Chou is one a the nicest teachers I've had, always tries to be clear when teaching. Homework almost everyday, 3 exams + final, If you want a good grade, you need to pay attention and go to almost every class. Always helps you when you need it.
You can not skip his class, unfortunately i made that mistake. His lectures are clear, but his syllabus and website are extremely confusing and hard to understand.
Expected me to have A+ knowledge from Math 150. Having gotten a low C in that class the previous semester, I was severely unprepared for his fast teaching style that emphasizes weirdly specific components of problem solving rather than the big picture. The course is huge, so it's likely not all his fault...
Professor Chou was nonetheless without a doubt the worst professor I've ever had. I took 150 and received an A and struggled going into Chous class because he makes calculus more complicated and abstract than need be for a students basic understand. My 150 teacher told us the basic notion of what to do, where as Chou makes it something it isn't.
Professor Chou is fantastic and cares about the success of his students. I took him for Linear Algebra over summer, and it was one of the most difficult classes I've ever taken. He gives tough problems, and often on exams I wouldn't know where to begin. However, he does give partial credit, and if you ask a question during lecture he will answer.
Prof. Chou is the best math prof I've ever had. He really cares for his students. His quizzes and exams are fair. No surprises, he takes exam qs from the hw. He's very nice and approachable. Do the hw at least 2X , go to the math lab, and his OH. He's not a pushover so you get what you work for. I got an A + in both 150 and 160, I worked hard.
Every hard working student will absolutely earn a great grade in his every class. If you lost your attention, you will absolutely fail this class. Perfect professor, the best one! He gives us a right direction to study mathematics and to know what math is.
I took Yen for both 160 and 210. Out of 32 weeks being his student, the main lesson I learned (that can only be taught by a truly great teacher) is that you do not have to be gifted in a subject to be successful, you just have to put in a lot of effort and hard work. Yen wants every student to be successful to say the least. Lots of homework!
Mr. Yen, is a teacher good Teacher gives good detail on assignments great attitude and always there to help.
Yen Kuang Chou is good instructor in SBCC and in the Math 95 is good a lot of homework and group working he is the best instructor in department of mathematics.
Yen is really nice and is always smiling when he's teaching so you know he likes to teach. A lot of homework but it pays off if you do it. He will always help or answer questions on his free time.
Yen is a very enthusiastic math professor who cares about the success of his students. He is willing to help individuals outside of the classroom and answer questions, even if they seem "stupid". Doing homework is necessary to do well on exams, because he uses similar if not identical questions!
Professor provides review tests before exam day and is very helpful for you. Do homework because it is towards your grade! Overall, great college math professor!
I have him for math 160, this is not an easy A course (even a B is challenging), the subject matter covered is very very difficult but Yen Chou explains things clearly and makes lots of material accessible for studying. The homework takes a very long time to do but is only collected once a month and is very instructive.
His lectures are clear and understandable, but do expect a lot of time studying for this class.
The lectures are clear and organized. In-class examples and homework problems prepare you for the exams, as well as the practice exam problems. Yen is enthusiastic about math and is happy to help students who have questions during class if it's helpful to others if not he will help you after class. Class time is used efficiently.
10/10 for his teaching style. He really cares about students, and likes to teach everything thoroughly to students. Actually, I'm kind of expecting that he has math200 to register.
I took math 95 and the only thing I would recommend is if you haven't recently token the math class before this one, you will not be able to keep up. His lectures are heavy but he does make sure to be very straight forward about his notes and also always takes the time to make sure you understand.
Yen is a great professor. Bewares of his exams. It is not so hard but still easy to lose points. Lectures are organized with tons of homework but these are important for M160.
Gives great advice on how to be succesful in math and truly cares about the students learning experience and outcome
Really good professor but can be too fast at times. Also gives a lot of homework so it's hard to study off of it when the test comes around.
Professor chou is one of the hardest professors. He does not acknowledge that his D.S.P.S students need more time to practice the material. He rushes through lectures and believes that all his students are capable of going at his pace.
Yen is a really good professor. I get the sense that he really does want his students to do well in the course that they're in. He gives printed copies of the notes, which is very helpful and they're easy to understand. Heavy on homework, but you have a week to do it. He also enjoys what he is teaching, and makes an effort to help all students.
Yen is an amazing teacher. He is clear in his teachings and the way he breaks down the problems is important and is what I like and need to be able to understand what it is I'm doing. I have no problem understanding the work and if you discipline yourself to do the homework every other day or as he teaches it and study you will do great.
Yen is a good professor. He provides our study materials which are really useful XD and he will try his best to make you understand the problems. If you do all the homework and the lecture notes, you will be fine. Yen is a nice person and I like his way of teaching.
No matter what math you take, it will be a great class. He really teaches the course, but be prepared for a substantial amount of homework. Great help when it is needed, and he can help you even if you aren't in his class. Be alert in class, it is not worth missing something important that will follow you into the test.
when turning in your homework(out of 10 points), he selects certain questions to grade so you get some credit for doing it then most credit for certain problems. he gives sample exams which are helpful but uses trickier numbers on exam. over all gives you enough resources to get the information you need. wish he reviewed when each class starts.
His lectures are fast-paced but he presents all the information in a way them digestible, assuming you know all the necessary prerequisite stuff. He'd already pre-constructed an outline for his notes so that gives his students plenty of time to listen instead of spending plenty of time writing, which is particularly thoughtful of him.
He is very passionate and enthusiastic about working with the subject material and very cleary communicates his steps in working through problems. He is very good at answering questions and is a great resource, as he devotes a good deal of time to helping students when they need it.
You're awesome, keep doing you
Use the review packets to study for the tests. Doing well on the tests is critical to success in the class. There isn't much extra credit.
One of the most inspiring, kind, and clear teachers I've ever had. Tests difficult but reasonable. Easy quiz from HW every class, sometimes open note/groups, harder review quiz before test. HW not required but critical to success. Chou's always ready to answer any question and really wants students to succeed. Do all HW, review and youll be fine.
Prof. Yen was an amazing professor. I would take him again, but not the class. Math 160, in general, is difficult. The only reason why people think he is going fast is because there are so many lessons to be covered in the class. However, if you do the homework and keep up with the work, it will be do-able. Good luck!
Took Professor Yan Chou summer class. He have lecture notes for his students, which is a good thing for students who don't have time or don't want to read the book. His lecture is clear and fairly easy. Homework is heavy but you don't have to do it, because he doesn't grade it, but if you want to have a good grade, you better do it.
Took Yen during the Summer for both Math 150 and 160. I generally was never interested in Math but after taking his class, I was hooked. He is very passionate about teaching math and really explains in detail for every problem. He is also very caring and will help you as much as possible. Highly Recommend you take him for either math 150 or 160.
Easiest option you can take at SBCC. Clear lecture, super easy exams. Definitely take him!
You won't be able to pass if you don't come to class; if you copy the solution as the way of finishing homework. I am one of his former students, I want to tell all of you: 1. This class is set for those students who really want to study; 2. Lazy students will hate him absolutely, but they need to understand an F is applicable to them at all.
Math is the hardest subject for me and this is my 3rd time taking Math 95. Yen is the best!! He explains things so well and is very helpful. He is the only math teacher on campus that i've enjoyed wish I could have him teach every math class, I'm finally doing well thanks to him. If you're slow with math and have trouble, take his class.
Yen is a great math professor! Had him for 95. You can tell he's passionate about math. He puts a lot of thought and effort into his lectures. He is really helpful and makes it clear what will be on exams. If you are lazy and miss classes don't take his class but if you want to learn and can keep up with simple assignments than you will get an A :)
The BEST professor I've ever had!!Really wish I can take all my other math classes with him. But I highly recommend taking math with him he's very helpful, amazing lectures and if you struggle with math he really helps you out.
Yen is the best. I highly recommend taking his class. Lecture is clear. You can see his lecture notes and HW answer keys. He is a kind, patient, and helpful. Grading is clear. If you understand the concept, exams are easy. Attend class, do HW ASAP, and ask questions. You can get an A. I have never seen a teacher who cares for such students so much.
He made math understandable by having easy to follow lectures
Yen gives great feedback and provides individual support to his students. He's a funny little guy; not too uptight. The class is easy - grading is on homework and exams, which aren't too heavy! Yen is dope.
Nice professor
Nice guy, but not the best teaching style
Yen is the man! Took his math150 course over the summer, which I had anticipated to be overwhelming but he explained everything that was expected clearly. If you don't do the HW, you will fall behind. Sometimes lecture can be dull but summer sessions cram a lot of material in little time. He is helpful, especially his practice exams. Great prof!
He is a really good teacher, but the exam is hard
Math is tough for me, but Yen made it as clear as anybody could! Really great guy, gives everything he can to help you succeed + makes class expectations clear. His exams aren't the easiest, but he wants to help you succeed in future math classes. I failed my way through HS math and managed to pass an accelerated summer course w/ his help!
I'm absolutely HORRIBLE in Math and I hadn't taken math for about 4 years so I was super nervous going into intermediate algebra. But professor Chou was the perfect choice! While I spent A LOT of time in the Math lab which helped me, Chou's grading style made it possible to pass the class by doing all HW, attend class and only get C's at the exams
This prof is great. Explains things very clearly and if you ask a question he will go above and beyond to answer it. When you need help, he will help. Just ask! Least condescending math prof! He just likes to do Math and is happy to teach. I will be taking him for Calculus in the future. One of the best Math profs at SBCC.
Yen is a wonderful teacher. I really like that he's extremely accessible and always willing to work with his students, going way beyond his office hours! I could say so many positive things. My personal cons stem from his difficulty. He's very lecture heavy and is a tough grader on tests. Very important to do the homework early and ask questions!
The class is based on homework, quizzes with notes, and closed-note, four hour (maximum) exams where we get to drop 2/5 problems. I got an A and worked from 9am-6pm. There are lecture videos we watch to learn the material. Professor Chou is super responsive with emails (even at 11 at night) and he has two hour Zoom sessions each day for questions.
Yen is simply the best. Yen's lectures and notes are crystal clear. Exams are reasonably challenging and it's doable if you truly earn the materials. If he teaches MATH200, I will be the first one signing up.
This professors online class is garbage. Had us watch 2 hours of khan academy videos on our own and expect students to dedicate 8-10 HOURS PER DAY during the summer session. No way I can actually understand math through a Khan Academy video. Dropped the class because I know there is no way I can learn through this class.
If you know you struggle with math take the IN PERSON class or make sure a tutor is available to you. I cannot stress that enough. He may be a great teacher, but beware that the online courses have you watch old Algebra videos (I'm talking 90's or early 2000's) and he does not actually teach you at all, but rather supervises the in person exams.
PROFESSOR YEN IS AMAZING! I strongly recommend taking your maths with him. Yes, there was a lot of homework, but I was taking it in six weeks, so that was expected. He really wants the students to understand and is very passionate and enthusiastic when he is teaching. I was super nervous to take this class (MATH 150), but now Im glad I did!
Tests are tough but you can only do well if you do the hw. Hw went from mandatory to optional, but your test grade will replace your hw grade so you have to do well. There are WAY too many lectures. It's overwhelming. Amount of hw is crazy. It's like he doesn't care about what his students do outside his class. He can get rude in office hours too.
I took Professor Chou for 150 over the summer and his class was a LOT. Maybe because it was over the summer, but the homework took 4 hours every day. I recommend taking some introductory class before or not taking this class over the summer.
This was my worst experience in college so far. His videos are extremely low quality. I couldn't understand 50% of what he was saying, like the actual words, let alone the material. I had to teach myself everything. His grading was arbitrary. He would pick two or three random problems from the exams and grade everything based on them. Avoid Yen.
The way that this class is set up is amazing. Yes there can be a lot of hw but its worth it. He gives short quizzes and long review quizzes. When it comes to tests, he gives you 10 questions and you get to pick 5 questions that you want to do and submit. Test and Quiz questions are straight from hw. He is a fast grader. Yen makes it easy to succeed
I had to teach myself EVERYTHING. Chou didn't teach us at all. He just posted youtube videos of different professors teaching a class the material we were learning. It was very hard to learn from those. I submitted the first assignment a week early and he never told me I did it wrong. Just graded it, didn't explain and didn't let me redo it.
Math 137 is a tough course, as it is worth 5 credits. There's quite a bit of homework as well as 3 midterms, but I believe Yen set up the course to help you succeed. Each midterm had a review quiz before it, which really helped. His lectures were pretty straightforward as well. If you dedicate time to the course, you'll do well.
EASY TESTS. In lecture, he really emphasizes the intuition of what he is teaching making sure that if you don't remember a formula you at least understand where it comes from so you can derive it. His homework is very hard, but you will get an A if you do it. Also, the man is drippin with style point out his basketball shoes he will blush.
(M130) Yen's great at simplifying and explaining abstract concepts! He never puts people down for asking for further explanation, and is generally a nice dude. Participation is key and Yen loves to put problems from the practice quizzes/classwork on the exams, so make sure to attend each lecture & take good notes; you'll be fine!
The quality of his video lectures makes it difficult to understand what he is saying. If you keep up with the notes, the material is easier to learn. He has all the assignments, quizzes, and lectures organized very well on canvas. But overall, I would not recommend taking his course online.
Super easy tests. Better to take in person. I would not pick another professor. He is so caring and explains very well.
One of the best professors I've ever had in my life... Extremely understanding, willing to explain concepts to you with parallels and similes to make them more palatable, willing to accommodate you for any shortcomings you might have, happy to discuss mathematics even if they lie outside of the topics covered by the class. 10/10.
One of my favorite professors of all time. Incredibly caring, understanding, willing to take hours out of his day to explain concepts and walk you through problems you don't fully grasp. Legend in all regards.
Best professor I've, he really cares about his students wether you are in-person or online. Very understanding and wants to help out as much as he can. For online classes there is a lot of homework that is time consuming, but he does drop some of the lowest scored assignments. Don't lag in his classes and you will pass. 10/10
I respect him for being passionate in Calc and for having drip in the classroom. However I felt like I had to work so much harder in this class than any other class, not because of the material but because of the amount of pop quizzes and excessive homework. Its nice that he gives you a week to complete it however.
Yen is great. I had him online for M150-160 and his online lectures are structured very well and aren't a daunting task because he makes them interesting. I loved calculus and having yen helped me understand the subject immensely. I am now a tutor for those classes because of how much i liked them.
If you aim for an easier A, avoid Yen. His tests are tough, making up 80% of the grade. He makes the class really tough to uphold SBCC's engineering program's integrity (like what?). Switched professors next semester and it was so much easier. He makes Calc 150 hard for no reason. Really cool dude but its not worth your grade.
Professor Chou is one of the best profs I have had in my entire college experience. He is super accessible and kind and makes the material so understandable. His tests have basic questions, and no surprises. He helps his students to succeed. Do the homework and use all the resources he offers, and you will have a great time in this class!
In Professor Chou's hybrid MATH 117 course, he gives students practice materials that always cover all the questions you'll see in the exams. I was never good at math, but his math course is very accessible since he encourages using calculator, learn how to push buttons and you can walk away with an A without grasping any of the math concepts.
Professor is kind, caring, and wants you to succeed. I did not do well in the class but that was no fault of his. He responds quickly to emails and is understanding. Will email you reminders on due dates and is happy to help. He truly cares and is also a funny guy.
Yen explains your questions thoroughly and teaches very professionally, he is an all around great professor. If you understand the homework, you can easily get an A. His class proves that working hard will lead to success, I loved his class and hope to learn from him later on. He cares for his students and is very easy to reach outside of class.
He is upbeat and encourages questions in class and has office hours. Grade based on 4 exams making up 80% of final grade, take-home review quizzes making up 15%, and homework problem reports making up 5%. Class moves very quickly in the summer and it's easy to get behind.
Grades harshly for no real reason. Most people taking 130 probably aren't math or STEM majors. Tests worth 80% of the grade. Cool guy, class is set up super well, but take someone else if you're not the best test taker.
It's not like I was expecting 130 to be easy, but Yen grades way too harshly for a class intended for people who probably won't use calculus again. He's a cool guy, nothing personal against him, I'm just not sure it's worth your grade.
Yen clearly is passionate about math but not his students. He is a tough grader and be prepared to study a lot and go to tutors if you can. When you ask him questions, he usually circles around the topic without giving a clear answer. The class is test heavy (80%) and he doesn't do curves, extra credit, or any dropped tests.
