Dr. Li is generally unclear in all aspects of his teaching. His expectations are nebulous, and his lectures are confusing. Asking for clarification after class is another dead end. I advise extreme caution!
Great history teacher, very intlligent and well informed in his field. Teaches history in a scientific perspective. Difficult but fair, demands hard work.

Great teacher! You have to work hard to get an A, but despite that, you will learn a great deal from him.
Tough to understand and very hard grader. Long papers are guaranteed. Expect more graduate level work in lower division of classes.
BORING!! i had to try to not fall asleep like everyday. the kid infront of me did fall asleep almost everytime he showed up!he repeats things numerous times and you don't really go anywhere. i would not recomend him.
Extremely intelegent and knows more history than will ever need to be a teacher. He not only knows it, but is able to understand it, tie it in with other things, and gets extremely exited when imparting this on students. We found his lectures great and we looked forward to his part of the Combined Studies class. Does require work, but he is fair.
Dont take his classes
Not an easy class at all...plus the guy is a history genius, he is credited in the back of the text!!

Dr. Li is my favorite professor. He is helping me to achive my dreams!
it is obvious that prof. Li is highly knowlegdeable about all history. he grades hard on papers but when you read the chapter work & combine what you read with his lectures, you'll get a good grade-& be proud of it too! read, go to class and put forth the effort if you want a good grade. also, he thrives on student input during class, so speak up!
Got a C+, but that might be 'cause I only came once a week on average; anyway, good teacher if you can stand his Engrish. Also loves chimichangas.
Dr Li is the greatest. He expects people to rise to the occasion. This is College not a playground. Be prepared to write and defend your ideas. Be a free thinker and do not just tell Dr Li what he lectured about. Write your paper like you mean it!
Dr Li is the best professor I have ever had. He is must for any historian. Brilliant..... TCC is lucky to have a professor of this quality!!!!
Expects perfect essays. Very demanding on quizzes and papers. Hard to get a good grade.
Japanese history. wow. rollercoaster, that's for sure. take him if you are dedicated. amazing man. wish i could handle him better. gives a group project which is the most fun of the whole class. long papers, lots of reading. he has a way of getting you excited about his teachings through lecture. go to class every day. it's a must.
I have taken Japanese History, Asian Philosophy and World History with Dr. Yi Li. I found his on campus classes more interesting than his online classes because he is a very interesting teacher. I found it obnoxious that I received the same grade all three semesters even though my effort varied greatly between each class.
My class had a c average (this should explain it all). His syllabus doesn't follow his announcements and he makes tests very difficult-20 mins. Studying will not help because he test what you can find in the book with-in 20 mins, not what you know. Take this class if you like jumping through hoops just to get a "C" in the class.
He is very indistinct, messy and lazy teacher; so proud of his PhD and his China; with unbelievably easy class quizzes, manageable from very first week without opening the textbook. He assumes himself a tough teacher-- no concern-- get his course I support an A for you with 5 minutes studying for quizzes and one hour a month for paper works.
I found this teacher to be terrible. I took his class online, and he did not do a good job teaching at all. Just reading the text book, and writing got you 2% of your grade, 2 times a week. Its really hard to improve when you only get 1 out of 2 and not sure why. He is a hard grader, and he had to curve his online class so people could pass.
Not very clear.
Horrid, unlikeable, unclear, unsatisfactory! My 1st on-line class and it's a joke, he wants regergated text book answers with no elaboration on his part. His imput is asking questions. I especially do not appreciate his curt and often degrading attitude!!! He should be kicked to the curb by TCC, he does NOT meet their excellent standards!
Terrible teacher. Probably the worst I have EVER had. He makes no sense at all, and expects too much. He should not be teaching.
3 years ago I took his class. On opening day it was totally full, by the end of the quater only 6 people remained. He is the most difficult teacher I have ever had and the hardest class. The plus side is that if you make it to the end of his class his final is easy and worth half your grade. I WILL NEVER TAKE HIM AGAIN.
The worst history teacher I have ever had. His quizes were confusing and all the work to prepare for them was not helpful. He was unclear and very hard to get in contact with. Obviously not computer literate and was unclear about submitting work. He also only focused on Asian history even though it was world civilizations. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
His essays are graded on his strict guidelines that don't make a difference if you ask him how to improve your score his answer will be worthless. He doesn't care for his students. He insults them, embarrasses when there gone. He can't speak proper English Very unclear and doesn't know much about America. His teaching is unethical.
I took Dr. Li's online 'Asian Philosophy' class and hated it. The text material was interesting but the only teaching he did was summarizing the chapters. He made the class page inaccessible the day after the final, so I never got ANY grades or feedback on my final test or paper. It was hard to be motivated when he never gave personal feedback.
Horrible teacher. His tests are ridiculous and there is no need to study for them because guess what....it's not going to do you any good. He has 2 discussions a week which consist of regurgitating what you read and telling someone else you liked their post. He writes in poor English, and does not communicate. Don't bother.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!! I usually get 3.0 or above in my classes. He expects perfect essays. Worst part is his lectures are hard to understand and grasp. I'm genuinely saying that he is a horrible teacher. I had a horrible experience in his class. I've had him twice as a teacher and both times I hated it. His teaching style did not change either.
I am taking an online class of his. For discussion posts he has us regurgitate the book, then he tells us our posts are incorrect. He said to my post online that my answer was wrong because 'wasn't it common sense?' He is rude and not helpful at all. Do not take his class!
I can honestly say to all of the students with negative comments; you probably are not satisfied with your grade and prefer to vent anonymously to a website rather than get the guts to talk to him in person about it. He is a hard grader, but his feedback is helpful. Definitely proves that a community college is no walk in the park but great teacher
His essay grading might have high expectations by after just a quarter in his class your essay skills will definitely improve. I agree with the guy below, you probably aren't getting that great of a grade. know him a little more personally and he has great stories of his past. recommend this class if you actually want to learn something.
well he's really tough, not exactly an Amy chua. his English is understandable and he is fluent unless you were too sheltered to understand. Asian jokes below are pretty pathetic if they are aimed at someone with a strong past. amazingly gifted at history. take it if you are as dedicated as he is.
Very good teacher, has high expectations but wants his students to reach those expectations. He does have an accent and does reach for the right word from time to time, but his English is far, far better than my Chinese.
For the love of gpa....do NOT take any classes from this guy. He doesn't care, won't give ANY feedback and will give you an awful grade without explaining why. I have emailed him 8 times over this class to get clarity and ask what I'm doing wrong and he hasn't given me an answer. I'm taking his online class and it's like he doesn't even exist.
We had class members meeting with board members and the dean in an attempt to get some help on the grades they received from Mr. Li. These students emailed him repeatedly for clarification about why they received lower marks, and did not get a response. I do not recommend Mr. Li as a teacher.
First offI am an honor roll student who prides myself with a high GPA & this wasn't my 1st online class. I have never been so frustrated by the lack of teaching! Judging by the low class average I'm not alone, it was like he had no interest in helping you learn! Short of a photographic memory you had no way of coming through with an A or sanity!
I am typically an "A" student, however Mr. Li did not seem to think so. I did everything I could for this class, read and re-read the textbook before quizzes and still did not pass; I also tried very hard on my discussions (using citations and everything) and still did not get full credit. I do not recommend this instructor to anyone.
He is a good teacher, and he has high expectation to his students. Many students may not satisfy with their results, and they have the chance to improve their grade by handing in extra credit paper. However, it seems that not many students made use of this chance. If you cannot get a good grade, please think if you have really tried your best first
Best professor ever very passionate about teaching and loves history. I highly reccomend him.
Dr. Li is the best Asian History Professor. He knows his subject very well he loves teaching and he is very passionate about it. He expect a lot from students because he gives a lot too and it is fair. Take all his classes it will be an experience that will change your life forever. Love him. Study and you will get a solid A.
For the research project, you have to submit a topic for approval, a thesis statement and annotated bibliography, and then your research paper. My topic received approval, my thesis statement received approval, but my paper received a low rating because my topic was too broad. Why approve it in the first place?? Totally frustrating class.
He is a very difficult teacher and is very hard to understand. I honestly dont recommend him. He does not prepare you for the essay questions or the tests. His lectures are pretty useless. He is passionate but he gets off topic very easily and hardly answers your questions directly.
I do not recommend taking this class! He is not helpful at all, and expects everyone to write like him. In-class essays have little to do with his lectures. The only good part about this class is the unlimited extra credit. You'll be lucky to get 2 points for a two page essay though. Do not take him!
Extremely unhelpful. Discussion questions aren't "hard"—he is just vague on what his expectations are, and his grading seems arbitrary. All tests are taken from the book, but reference specific sentences, so even if you've studied the chapter, unless you remember a specific sentence, you might still get a question wrong. My B- was the highest grade
Dr. Yi Li is the best Chinese Hiatory professor. I am an A student with high GPA and I was able to get an A in his class. I studied hard and put a lot of effort amd passion in studying as much as Dr. Li put it into teaching. He is truly the best and knows his subject very well. A very smart and interesting man.
Dr. Yi Li is a wonderful man and one of the best professors. He loves history and teaches with a lot of passioon. He is very compassionate and with a heart of gold. Take his classes you will learn not only about the subject but about life too.He has a beautiful voice and a great accent.I have graduated I miss him very much.
Not willing to assist you when you are really in need of some extra assistance.
Dr. Li while passionate about chinese history lacks a world perspective. Everything in history is always tied back to China via some obscure reference. He lacks clarity with his lesson plan and ultimately you get slapped with a poor grade when you give him what he asked for. Once you have recieved your grade he's happy to point out your errors.
I echo another review: I am an A student and worked my butt off to get better scores in his World Civ class. The harder I tried, the worse grade I got. Poor to non-existent teaching, obscure requirements...I definitely believe he does not care about teaching at all. I would NOT recommend this teacher.
Almost impossible to get clear communication with online. Ask a time-sensitive question and you will probably get the answer past the point at which it might be useful AND he might completely misunderstand the question (happened more than once). The class itself was okay, I think it would have been better in a classroom environment.
Taking this course online, and there is absolutely no guidance whatsoever. We are reading and teaching ourselves, only to receive vague and negative feedback. I have never felt so hopeless in a class. I study so hard only to fail my test! I typically get A's in all my classes! Do not recommend at all.
taken at Olympic College. Very knowledgable
Decent teacher but very vague even with srudying I found myself falling behind. He lets the in class discussions go onto other subjects so its hard to follow. Very vague whej chosing an in classessay topic
Smart guy, difficult class. Be prepared to do your work, but it's certain worthwhile.
Class consisted of reading the assigned textbook for the Online quizzes, all of the questions came from the text which he expects you to read on your own time. The quizzes where VERY VERY hard! You write 1 in class timed essay a week which is over the lecture it's easy if you pay attention. Hard teacher but you do learn allot. DO NOT MISS CLASS!
Worst teacher ever. He doesn't grade any of the discussions. When I asked what my grade was or why I couldn't see my grade all he says is "Ask tech support." Doesn't tell you what pages to look on for homework. Vague. Not helpful. Just an awful teacher. He has no idea what he is doing. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
Dr. Li is extremely knowledgeable and is nice. However, he is the worst professor I've ever had. I am an A student and love history. His class was extremely unorganized, he doesn't teach, at all. AT ALL. Syllabus reads like a text book and isn't really class focused. Expect to teach yourself. I taught myself, learned NOTHING from class instruction.
Syllabus was completely wrong. No list of what to read, online quizzes were 20 mins, instead of the stated 25. Finishing them was difficult. Was supposed to be online lecture. Told us to do report 3 weeks before class ended when actually was research paper. Gave no guidelines for either. I am an A/B student, most likely going to have a D or fail.
Very rude and unorganized the entire course.while teacher tends to fail at written communications multiple times, has commented on many of the students research papers including mine to "Get a writing tutor" which is insulting considering I was an B student in both English 101 and 102 classes. Has posted students grade publicly for all to see.
This teacher was uninvolved, did hardly anything but post a syllabus and quizzes. Most of the discussion questions were taken from the book. He was rude and not encouraging at all.
did not grade any of my essays, presentation or research paper and officially turned in my grade at a 50% showing only online graded quizzes as credit, he left out half the course work to be graded and I did ALL the course work. My advisor has an academic complaint filed on him. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES!!!!!!!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. I took this class because I had an interest in Japanese history. Dr. Li has completely ruined that interest. He is the worst teacher I have ever had. If you take this class you better have some knowledge of the history and language already. Also you better be good at writing essays. His grading is ridiculous.
Took this class online, assignments were not always clearly marked with due dates. Teacher made many mistakes in grammar and spelling, but marks down hugely for any minor mistakes in the paper. I had a huge interest in world history (this class is 1700s-present) but I will not be taking anymore history classes if he is teaching them.
Worst teacher I have had at TCC. I took his online and he was completely useless. The class was very unorganized and he was condescending and unhelpful in his discussion replies. It felt like he put no effort into the class whatsoever. I will never take another class from him again.
This guy will not cut you any slack and the final is very hard.
Dr. Yi is an okay teacher. I took his online history course; his communication with the class was lacking and he was a very picky grader. His grading seemed fair up until the final when he hammered everyone with low scores - the class average was in the low F range. He is hard but if you put in the effort a good grade is attainable.
People, if you see this guy's name on the class schedule, DON'T SIGN UP! Horrible teacher. He'll ask you to turn in assignments on time, which don't even have due dates! Very unorganized and confusing modules.
Here's the thing about Dr. Li. He's a tough grader but it's because he's literally quoted in the back of the textbook, the guys like a genius. Most people hate the class because they get poor grades but they simply don't try as hard or read the book like they should. Talk to him outside of class and you'll find him way more likable.
I didn't even know that I would like this class when I signed up for it, I was really hesitant about registering for it in the first place because of all the review here but I promise you that if you make the effort in his class, you will get so much out of it. Dr. Li is so helpful and is happy to give you feedback BUT YOU HAVE TO ASKWORK FOR IT.
This class is very hard to keep my attention, every day is a long lecture with no activities or assignments. If you enjoy just lectures than this class is for you. He is not very clear with instructions or expectations. Very tough class but he means well.
This class is very hard to keep my attention, every day is a long lecture with no activities or assignments. If you enjoy just lectures than this class is for you. He is not very clear with instructions or expectations. Very tough class but he means well. You really have to work and pay attention to earn an average grade.
Both textbook and class attendance are crucial. If you dont enjoy his subject you will struggle, but Dr Li is very knowledgeable and the class is enjoyable. Its important to follow his instructions on the essays. An A is possible if you do the work and seek help when needed. Hes not great at sparking class discussion and he does have an accent.
He is a very great professor. He helped me to improved my knowledge in world history. I also want people to change their mind in rating this professor. He has done the best to help his students. I took three courses (HIST 126, 127, 128) from him and they were helpful for me.
He's notoriously a hard professor but people are always frustrated with their grade more than they are the person. Dr. Li is so smart and kind. Ask him for advice and help instead of seething over the mediocre grade you got on your mediocre professor
Excellent
Great professor. Recommend if u are up for the challenge
Absolutely the worst teacher I have had during my whole time at TCC. The hardest tests and not to mention very rude feedback, no constructive criticism, very sloppy lectures
Worst teachers I have had so far.
I took the online class thinking it wouldn't be too difficult and majority of the assignments and tests were not but when it came to the final paper he was not very specific. Going into the final I thought I would get a decent grade because I was doing good on the discussions which he said the final was on turns out I was completely wrong.
Yi Li would be better teaching at the university instead of a community college. He expects too much out of his students. Unless you are a history major, I would not recommend you taking him. Outside of class, he seems to be a nice but condescending guy. If you ask for help, he will answer but talk to you as if you are stupid.
Took this class as an elective and it was a big mistake. Seems very knowledgeable in the subject, but I do not feel like I got a clear idea of what this class really entailed. Grades very hard with no rubric/idea of how he wants written essays. I wont be taking another class from him. Went to him for help, was just told to elaborate more.
He gave very little feedback, sitting back while we ran around like chickens with our heads cut off. I asked for help and he told me to ask someone else. Yi has a very confusing grading system, everything worth so few points that if you miss a little, you're likely to fail. The quizzes were "what is 'most correct'?"; this caused me much trouble.
Yeah, he's a tough grader, but wow people ask some dumb questions/say dumb things. I looked this guy up and he's credited in everything that has to do with Asian history. If you're serious about the subject, take the class because he knows it all, wicked smart dude. If you're fishing for an easy history class then don't think about trying
This professor is terrible. He gives no feedback and when he does its very critical and he never tells you when you did a good job. He grades extremely hard and unrealistic. I would not recommend taking this class especially if you are taking it for credits.
The worst professor on the campus. He is extremely tough on grading, gives no feedback on how you can improve, and is misleading on quizzes and essays. He shows up five minutes late for class. Then in his lectures, he speaks on nothing that is on the quiz. If you want credits do not take any of his classes.
Quizzes are very difficult to complete within time frame allowed. Very little criteria was given for the final paper but he docked me for not using footnotes? Had he specified, I would learned how. He also argued a point I used in my essay, and when I was proven right, he didn't change my grade, just ignored me. He doesn't like being wrong.
Took online in 2015. 7 discussions, 7 quizzes, 6-page paper (15%), final exam (20%). He gave lazy comments on paper/final. My lazy research but good writing got me 80% on the paper. E-book helped a ton for researching questions to answer the discussion posts. Don't expect communication. Class is not too hard if you're used to these types of classes
THE WORST PROF I HAVE EVER TAKEN IN THE HISTORY OF HISTORY. I dropped this course the fourth week in, because he was so difficult, & grades so hard. I studied so hard for the weekly quizzes, but would fail. If you want to lower your GPA, take this professor. He is literally the worst. I'm a 4.0 student, & his class was Hell.
Lecture heavy.
Really good guy just a bit of a tough grader.
I was expecting this class to be interesting and influential. Boy was I wrong. First of all he is a very tough grader so even if you do the assignment and think you know the material you will most likely not receive full credit. He encourages other students to nit pick everything you're saying which doesn't help anyone learn. Do not take his class
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF. I currently take him and I have got to say that he is by far the worst instructor I have had. He does not grade my any criteria and he does not give good feedback. If you ask him a question he talks to you as if youre dumb and he always is off track with his lectures. Also all the content is online even tho were in class
Didnt learn much in the actual class but the resources listed on his canvas were helpful to complete the quizzes. He gives 2 chances to get a good score on the quizzes so its an easy A.
Love this professor. Took four classes with him, he's incredibly knowledgeable and passionate. Tough grader, but as long as you do the reading and are engaged in class discussion, you'll have a blast. Do not recommend if you're just filling it out for requirments - incredible if you're really trying to learn.
He may be a good history prof (I wouldn't know) but his ability to teach a philosophy class is clearly lacking. His online quizzes often have content that nobody has heard or seen before, and his essay questions are unclear and difficult to answer. He only gives out 100 points for the whole course, so any point missed is a big hit to your grade.
He writes his own material in broken English. I got docked for a couple points for mistakes on my research paper, but he puts out material in which wrong words are used, or you just could understand what he is trying to say. I struggled with discussion posts because I couldn't understand what he was aking. Gives NO feedback, if he does he is rude.
Rather than a textbook, all he prescribed for our class was a collection of disjointed articles and videos which rarely fully addressed the topic, before asking discussion questions which required outside reading to answer. The only reason I was able to pass the online class, let alone get an A, is that I had a textbook he used to assign by chance.
Students are pretty hard on him. He makes you work for an A, but it's doable. Do not take if you're looking for an easy A. No book as you use internet resources, so prosave money but YOU NEED TO ACTUALLY USE THE INTERNET AND STUDY. Tough grader. Hour of class, 1-2+ hours of studying daily. Would not take again, but if i had to, I wouldnt sweat it.
Have you ever just wanted to go in a class 3x a week for an hour and feel like you absolutely didn't learn anything? Professor Yi Li is your guy! Be prepared for the whole quarter grades to be based out of 100 points. You can either get 100, 75, 50, or 25 each week. You can only earn 8 points a week. If you mess up once it's along road to recovery.
I came out of this class more confused than I was before. There were extremely long given notes, vague essay questions, and quiz questions that the notes weren't covered. Miraculously, I got an A. Praise Jesus, Allah, Buddha, and Zeus that I was even able to pass. Good luck and remember to ask questions or you won't understand what's going on.
Communication is key- if you don't understand, ask. Take notes- especially in lectures Final Paper- Make your writing clear. No rubric. Emphasis on significance. Quizzes- uhm good luck!? study hard before attempting Essay Questions- always include the year. Look at other essays before submitting I hope this helps... good luck, it's kinda hard lol
Took Dr. Li online. Organized canvas with consistent homework cycle. No textbook but material is written in broken English.. just takes a little extra work but no big deal. Not a hard class just need to think critically. Meet with him to go over expectations; hes very nice & willing to help. Wouldnt take him again but if you must, dont sweat it.
I was worried when entering this class based on the comments, but Dr. Li is not bad at all! If you come into the class with a positive mindset and ready to learn, you will enjoy it and will certainly receive an A. He requires students to think critically and its refreshing! Advice communicate with him if you are an online student.
PHIL100 was not a difficult class if you taught yourself the material. He likes to show up 5-10 minutes late almost every day and then proceed to just lecture. Very easily side tracked and often off topic so the class has to work harder on their own. I received an A and I dont know a single thing about philosophy.
used to not like this professor for not being very forgiving then i took a couple more of his classes and got used to the program. The lectures often lead to very informative student led discussions. even if hes not very lenient on the small online assignments he even once let me take my final late because i flat out forgot when it was due.
Every point is 1% of your grade, he will give 0's despite you doing the work if he deems you give who/when/what/why to his satisfaction. Final was essay questions 20% & he's a hard grader Expects you to read discuss question the course handouts each 30 pgs x 15+ quizs are multiple choice and you can take each 2x Would not take this professor again
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Worst professor ever. I have straight As for 29 classes and his class I barely passed. 3-5 hours of reading and an assignment due on the readings EVERY OTHER DAY. Pop up quizzes without notification. If you dont log in multiple times a day you will miss them. My history major father helped and I still barely passed.
Very thorough and straight forward. Keep up with the readings and you'll do great! The discussion boards were challenging but I was able to apply what I learned from reading and learned a lot about the history of Japan. The final essay was also quite a challenge but the prof is very generous when grading as long as you put in the effort.
Worst teacher ive ever had. extremely unresponsive and rude, refused to understand extrêmement situations in which i was unable to attend class. Goes on side tangents every day and honestly i learned more by taking the quizzes twice. Do not take. Broken english made it very hard to understand what he was trying to relay, used wrong words a lot.
He likes communism and will try his best to make you like it too by the end of the class. He gets things confused because of Enlgish not being his native language and it makes it hard to take clear notes. Thankfully the quizes can be taken twice.
I would not recommend this class. There is no textbook just sources that he puts together for you which requires HEAVY reading. Your assignments could be perfect and do everything hes asking and its still not enough. Assignments are out of 4 points so if you miss one youre already at a C.
This class was one of the hardest I've ever taken. There is SO much reading, but thankfully most of it is relatively interesting! The discussions are also difficult, but something I found was that if he himself replied to your discussion post, reply to him again!! He gave me more credit for doing that!
Took him for HIST230 online and it should of been an easy class overall but it was not. He gives no rubric and the textbook is written by him and other colleagues and it SUCKS. I have stayed in contact with him the whole quarter and have asked numerous times for criticism but he provides absolutely no feedback, and then he grades harshly.
Book sources are written by Li, which need a lot of editorial work. Expect to read 63 pages per week very thoroughly (450 pages of reading/quarter). 4 of 20 weekly quiz questions are NOT relatable to the provided reading material. ZERO lectures/videos given..... Syllabus is okay overall, but also needs edits.
A quiz with unlimited attempts every and two discussions every week, pretty straightforward for an online class. It wasn't until finals that Dr Li became increasingly frustrating to work with. His grading criteria was unclear, and messaging him was not much help. The paper was graded out of 10 points, which I find very stupid. No extra credit.
The class itself isn't difficult, the teacher's teaching style is what makes it difficult. It shouldbeconsidered a self-taught course. Mr. Li doesn't "have time" to answer questions/explain grade given, (his words). His OER is spoken in what seems like code, because he doesn't write in complete sentences, so everything feels like a trick question.
I took this class amidst the Corona Virus, and my stress was doubled. Dr. Yi Li writes all of his own works and it's important to do all of the discussions, or you will fail without a doubt. In this class, you must do everything above the unclear standard in order to succeed. It's stressful and overwhelming. The teacher isn't helpful and is rude.
I took the course during Covid, this class required me to read an absurd amount of text just for one question that showed little relevancy overall. One of the worst parts was his grammar, his grammar caused me to lose 3 points on a 10 point assignment which dropped my grade to a b- from a high b+. When I asked him about it he doubled down on it.
He was ok. I am not too particular about my grade since it is just a gen class. It shouldn't be too hard though because there are quizzes with unlimited chances but he doesn't take in (some) late work so any point missed will have an impact on your grade. I think if I took this class again and knew not to miss any discussions then I get an A.
Highly recommend avoiding this teacher at all costs. +Homework is weekly readings and questions done in discussion posts -Grading is EXTREMELY subjective. teacher will say "great" as feedback but proceed to give a B- without explanation. -Unclear criteria. -Teacher does not elaborate well when asked clarifying questions -A is 95% or higher
Hand writes every reading. Includes a few grammatical errors in every reading. Not super responsive outside of class and I can't recommend enough that you avoid him at all costs. Instructions for the final project were pretty vague too.
Not a native English speaker so everything written by them had multiple errors that made it difficult to understand lessons. Vague instructions for the final research project. Super tough grader which isn't necessarily bad but just be careful about that. Expensive textbook required and quizzes are very confusingly written.
After reading comments here I was nervous to take this class but glad I did. His English is fine and any grammar issues honestly just aren't big enough or frequent enough to justify being confused about the assignment. He was also helpful when I requested one-on-one feedback
He has broken English that doesn't read well. If your opinion doesn't match his then you fail. Study guide even states that people will go to his dean and he acknowledges it. He knows there are issues and doesn't attempt to fix it.
I enjoyed my time in Japanese history. You will be doing a LOT of note-taking and writing. Weekly quizzes given with 2 allowable tries (after first try you get an answer key in case you missed any). The research paper and presentation are a little more difficult. The final isn't too hard if you do all the required work. Just use effort guys!
Unfortunately, due to site guidelines, I am unable to fully express how I feel about this professor. I advise you to stay clear of Yi Li. His lectures are extremely hard to follow, he's an extremely tough grader and he's just straight up rude.
Professor is great and explaining concepts and engaging you with material. Learning the course material is on you, 20 pages of reading per week with a weekly quiz+short essay response. If you want to learn history take a class with Yi Li, if you want to coast through a class, get a decent grade without trying and make your parents proud, don't.
He is very nice, however, his English on paper takes a little longer to read. Lots of group discussions, and replies to other students are mandatory.
This teach was THE WORST. He is extremely rude, non responsive and doesn't give clear instruction. He would tell us to use what we learn in English 101, yet that is not a prerequisite for this class, and if he would get to know his students even a little he would know I never took English 101. I would steer clear of him at all costs.
I do not recommend this professor. He is rude and has no respect for his students. You're given less than 12 hours to do a quiz and essay that covers ~90 pages of reading every week. Rubric is vague. He does not do extensions. I try to look for positives in every class but I don't have any to include for this one.
As stated by another review, do not take this professor as it seems simple and clear at the start but gradually becomes more confusing and hard to understand as you go on, things such as less than 12 hours for quizzes and short essays with a good amount of reading to do and on top of it, vague information on the final assignment it seems.
This is one of the worst online courses I have ever taken. This is possibly the worst way to teach history. This course consists of 3 discussion posts and then a quiz per unit. The reading is a large block and piles of irrelevant information and no other resources. This class fails to address the most important question, why should I care?
Amazing professor. Gets back to you in minutes after your questions. He knows the course material like the back of his hand. He grades very harshly, and is unprofessional at times. He gets straight to the point and I like him for that. Very rigorous work but he makes it worth it.
AVOID AT ALL POSSIBLE COSTS! He understands history but not the English language and all the course reading is written by him. He's not just a tough grader, he's unrealistic. I got the highest grade on the final exam - it was a C. I got the second highest grade on the final paper - it was a C. Find a teacher who prioritizes learning not perfection
This professor is the worse professor I've ever had! First of all, he is very rude, and his quizzes are pretty much impossible ! You have less than 24hours to do a quiz that requires to read at least 5 pages! The questions make no sense and you only have 20mins and 1 attempt to do it. No extension possible..
The quizzes/discussion post's make up 50% of the class. You were able to the quizzes twice. The research paper and final exam were on the harder side due to fact his criteria is not exactly clear in terms of content.
I liked that he tried to make us really think about and understand the material, even though that was not easy and sometimes required additional research which wasn't really acknowledged. He doesn't coddle you but he's not mean. I recommend only if you are actually interested in the topic, and only if you can learn from reading.
If you love history and writing, this course is for you. If you're just here for credits, it's overwhelming—tons of quizzes, essays, and no extra credit. Expect 20 hrs/week of work between reading and manditory discussion posts. Great if you're passionate, brutal if you're not. TBH, I regretted taking it and couldn't wait for it to be over.
Lots of reading and online discussion posts, you need to read and write a lot. If you are sick or need medical leave for any reason they are very reluctant to give accommodations and reply to most questions with very curt/vague answers.
Seemingly ignores email/canvas comments. Only gives vague comments when grading. doesn't respond to comments when/if he does, tells you to "speak to him after class" even though the messaging system exists for this sole reason. Quizzes and essays open & due same day as most lectures, not allowing any time to study. Losing any points will drop grade
This instructor is overly focused on China, often off-topic, and shows a poor grasp of history. Lectures are confusing and poorly structured, with almost no one attending. Grading seems random and lacks clear criteria. Avoid this class if you want to actually learn something meaningful.
Unbelievably long readings without citations, with random details clearly lifted from Wikipedia, maps in different languages for some reason, all written by him. Refuses to give extra credit even though he said he would (worst part because he lied). Quizzes are long with too many details, even if you use the readings you won't score 100%. Beware.
Lecture reading are filled with minor unnecessary details that crowd what you do need to know and the quizzes are extremely difficult. I will say the prof. is very quick to reply and straightforward which is good. However the rubrics for the final essay and video were practically nonexistent. And good feedback was minimal.
