Yin Lu is a great teacher. His english is not perfect but anyone with half a brain can get used to his quirky language. He is a master of the content and makes class fun. He loves Macgyver and the A-team and will relate them to math without hesitation.
A lot of fun. Good teacher.
If you do not like big suprises on every exam you take in a class, this is not your guy.

Lu makes class very fun. He also knows his subject well and can relate it to the real world, unlike alot of math teachers
One of the worst math teachers i ever had. Doesn;t teach a great deal, but expects us to know them. lousy teaching method... Bad clarity...
My first try at a self paced course. I know what I had to do and did it. Instructor always asked if I had any questions or problems. Like a previous rating said..anybody with half a brain can understand his english. He is all business and knows his stuff. Math can be a very intimidating subject and some like to take it out on the instructor.

Great teacher. Just a little hard to understand at first, but he becomes clearer as you get used to him after a couple of lectures. I liked his teaching method and stories, and yes he does like the A-Team and MacGyver. In fact he has an autographed picture of Richard Dean Anderson in his office.
His exams are more indepth than his lectures and his english skills are questionable at best
I absolutely love going to this class. His adorable accent makes me crack up! I'd like to bring him home for my kids to play with, they'd love him!
The way he marks on the tests and assignments is very random. Me and my friend did the exactly the same on the homework. But he gave us different score. weird isn't it?
It only took one class for me to adapt to his accent. He makes great effort to speak understandably. He goes over material as many times as students request. He indicates very clearly what material will be on tests. Very friendly and fun sense of humor, (it grows on you). Let's face it, most nursing types don't like math. He's NOT the problem.
nice guy, funny. his accent is not a problem, but his way of gradeing quite unpredictable, and his lectures are nearly useless unless you already understand what he is talking about. he is also horrible at answering questions. if you have to take him, always read the material before the lecture.
Yin Lu is a pretty good teacher. His accent is hard to understand the first day. However, by day 2 it's a problem of the past. His lectures are very organized being that linear algebra is very abstract. His tests, however, are difficult so have a very good cheat sheet ready. I enjoyed my experience in his class.
Very unclear, and fails to properly go over work in reviews, especially before tests.
many people told me that he's not good, now I see why. not very nice person.
He math class was my favorite class in fall 06. Learned a lot. Had a lot of fun.
Very hard subject!! Mr. Lu has a strong accent and some have issues trying to understand him at times. He is very knowledgeable and is always willing to help. I would probably take him again.
I will not say it is easy, but if you don't want to study, then don't even come to class. Without studying why do you expect to get a good grade? Get your butt out of math class, then. He has accents, but it matters only first class. He is very funny and willing to help students all the time.
yin lu is probably a good mathmetician...but he is a terrible teacher. all he does is write problems on the board and solve them..no explainations. and don't bother asking questions about the theory behind questions, he'll only answer questions about specific homework assignments. he also is very careless with his grade keeping...

This is my third year at WCC and I've taken a math class every semester. I've never met any teacher as bad as Lu. He doesn't explain things; he just solves problems on the board. I counted 20 major grammatical errors on his last test. Avoid this teacher at all costs. He's a perfectly fine guy, and he seems smart, he's just lazy and inarticulate.
Lu is a smart teacher. However,, he will only teach from the question, does not explain the theory. I know why ppl say he is hard. I mean for 293 nothing is easy, well..ask him question..go to his office hours..it might be helpful..he is the kind of person that explain from question. He could write very clearly and neatly when he explain.
terrible. he has trouble clearly explaining concepts using the terminology of the class. he relies on diagrams and gesturing. i didn't find him helpful at all.
A great mathematician, but a really awful teacher. I sincerely love mathematics, but I dreaded going to his class every evening. He is unable to express himself and misuses mathematical terms, which makes his tests very confusing. It's difficult to succeed at math when the problems are so poorly worded. I highly recommend you avoid him if you can.
He's pretty much low average. He's not BAD...but he's kind of dull and not really engaging at all.
I have attended WCC full time for 2 years now.... this is the worst teacher I have ever encountered! U can understand a word he says due to his HORRIBLE English, and his note writing on the B.Board is even worse! Sitting through lectures puts me in a fowl mood because of how confusing he is. He even confuses himself sometimes.... lmao! STAY AWAY!!!
WORSE TEACHER EVER.... DO NOT TAKE!!!!!! WILL NEED A TRANSLATOR JUST TO UNDERSTAND THE WORDS THAT ARE COMING OUT OF HIS MOUTH! DOESN'T SPEAK ENGLISH!
Cannot speak good english at all! I have no understanding of any word that comes outta his mouth! I have never had a teacher inwhich the entire class hated this much. Im so happy I'm done with his PAINFULL CLASS!
Easy as sin... love this guy
Overall pretty good. If you concentrate his english is understandable and he's very organized when he writes on the board. Really knows his stuff, and he's funny I spent so much time laughing. Tests are easy and just like homework, so there's really no excuse for not doing well. If you get stuck watch the MIT multivariable calc lectures on youtube
He is not hard to understand if you want to learn this stuff then you will. He does problems until you understand it and the class I took before his in algebra I got a D, his class I got an A. If you did not get a passing grade you did not practice enough, his accent has nothing to do with your grade.
Really knows his stuff. Very funny. Laughing all the time in class. Do the assigned problems and understand them and you'll do well. Hardest math class I've had at WCC.
great teacher..
This teacher just doesn't understand how to teach students. He has no theory behind anything and demonstrates a problem or two and expects you to understand it. He is a nice guy but has no business teaching. I'm furious i spent money on this class because i taught myself everything out of the book!
He's the best math instructor I've had here. His class is probably a little harder than previous classes you may have had with other instructors, but it isn't too hard. He's the only guy who teaches 295, but I'd recommend him for any other course as well.
He is the only math teacher I have ever had that I truly understand everything that is going on in class and I did very well in his class. He can sometimes be a little difficult to understand, but he takes his time explaining things and certainly will go over it again if ANYONE needs him to. (which can suck sometimes) but still super great!
When reading the reviews I have to say I would probably pay more attention to your negative comments on the professor's use of English if you knew how to spell... I found him very helpful and very knowledgeable! Go to class, do the homework and you are completely golden.
Mr. Lu is my favorite math teacher! He is very sarcastic and gives fair tests. If you go to class, pay attention, and do homework, YOU SHOULD GET AN A. He will have quizzes on important concepts and his exams are straight forward. He does have an accent but he's English is understandable. If you don't want to work hard, then don't take him.
To be fair, it was an easy class. But above that, Mr. Lu knows how to teach it understandably (and with a sense of humor!). He also attempts to relate the concepts back to the real world, which is very refreshing. If you have a problem with his accent, get over it! He's a wonderful professor.
Cool prof, you can understand what he saids, he always trys to put theory into practice by giving you real life examples. If your stuck, its your responsibility to go and ask what is going on. Do your homework, circle the ones you dont know and ask him the next class.
The problem with understanding Mr. Lu lies not with his accent, but in his inability to answer questions directly. Maybe it's not his style, or he honestly has a hard time understanding specific questions, but he falls back on the source material frequently, and rarely extrapolates. If you're on the fence, switch profs. it only gets harder.
Homework was given out but not collected. Classes were driven by student involvement. fun class.
He is an excellent teacher. Im a U of M student, and he is much better than the gsi's ive had here..He may have an accent but is very approachable and makes sure that you understand the concepts rather than just mere memorization.
Great teacher and he lets you use notes on test...he reinforces memorization and helps when you need it
Does not understand the questions that are asked to him. I struggled to communicate with this guy all semester. Poor guy tries, but not that good. I don't recommend.
He does not understand questions. You will not understand him most of the time. If you are someone who learns out of the book, and enjoys not having to show up all the time, he is a good choice. If you need a teacher, check someplace else!
Has a smug way of teaching. Will let everyone in class try to answer your question except him, the one you paid to lern from. Lets you use notes and open book for test but springs on you the last second that final is no notes no book. He does not understand nor able to speak English very well.
The language barrier is too great to learn from him.
Spends most of the class going over the most simple concepts for the students that don't understand, then rushes through the complex things at the last second. You must repeat your question 4 or 5 times if you want to get an answer even close to what you asked. Covers 4 chapters worth of meterial in 10 questions on tests. Worst teacher I've had!
Horrible teacher, I ended up having to drop his class because I could not understand him, the language barrier is a huge problem, and his lectures are useless.
He has a bit of language difficulty, but nice and helpful overall
Worst professor I have had at WCC. His lectures are awful and he was rude during office hours. I will probably retake the class at Michigan so that I can recieve some sort of structured instruction. Great mathematician, horrible teacher.
I love this teacher. He is very helpful, funny and explains everything very well. May be his English was so bad 3-4 years ago, but now it is good. English is also not my native language, but the rest of all students in my class are American and understand him very well. I began to love math with him, but before it was the WORST subject ever for me
I've always been horrible at math but he made it so easy to understand. He is very helpful and the tests and homework are easy as well. He lets you use index cards with examples and formulas for the tests.
This was the worse professor I ever had for a math class. You could not hardly understand what was being said. Good personality though.
He tries very hard to make sure that the entire class is on the same page, and going at the same pace. Will slow down, and answer any questions with in depth answers. Allows formula cards during quizzes and tests. If you attend the class, and do the work, you should be able to get a passing grade. He also offers lots of extra credit.
He is the best math teacher I've ever had. He makes sure that you don't leave the class unless you know what you are doing. It was easy for me to understand math in his class.
Doesn't really teach. Reads the book and asks "You folks with me?" a lot, but that's not teaching. Does not add anything helpful. Would not recommend unless you have taken enough math to know how to teach yourself. However, good at solving the hw problems on the board so that's helpful for studying. Tests are full of typos and harder than the hw.
The exams are a lot different from what we cover in class. I think they are written by a different instructor. No solution key is provided after the exams so hard to learn from mistakes. Visual examples in Maple would make this class much better. I got a's in calc 1, 2 and 3 and will be lucky to pass this class. It's hard and he is really confusing
Explains things well, uses the Socratic method to get other students chiming in. Homework is assigned but not required. He even dropped my lowest exam score! And he's hilarious. A mathematical leprechaun: tiny and mischievous. Sit in the front row and accent is not a problem. Could be intimidating to math n00bs, but perfect for upper level.
Definitely not an easy teacher but if you study what he recommends for tests/quiz's then its very easy to get an A. Very hard class but I feel like its a good preparation for a University.
Excellent class!
Didn't take much to pass, but he was very confusing and I did most of my learning online after class. He makes stupid jokes constantly and if you ask for help during class prepare to be made fun of before he answers you. He has an accent, but after the first few classes you get used to it. Solves problems from the book & nothing else during class.
He is a pretty funny teacher and if you pay attention and do the homework, the class isn't too bad. He goes over homework questions during the beginning of class and his lectures are very concise, so we can get out typically 30-45 minutes early. His tests are just his practice tests and they are quite easy as well. I would definitely recommend him.
Mr. Lu is a decent enough instructor. His class is not very difficult however, one might have a difficult time understanding him. I personally learned more from the connect math problems and self taught myself rather than learned from his teaching. There's nothing wrong with the way he teaches but it can be a bit dry at times.
He is a very good instructor. He stops after everything he explains and ask if there are questions. You really should study and pay attention otherwise you won't get a good grade. He is very good about explaining things and letting you make-up homework, but not tests. He lets you have a formula sheet on the final exam!!
I always did well in math but once I got to Calc 3 with yin, I started failing every quiztest. I transferred to a different teacher and my lowest score in the new teachers class was 97%. I had a 36% total in yins class when I left it. same material. Same study habits and amount of work.
Learn everything your self
Don't buy the book - it's online. First half of the class (exam 1, 2) was super easy. Practice tests are similar to the exams. The third exam killed our class (average low 60s). The final is hard but doable. You will need to work very, very hard for an A. Prof Lu is funny, but confusing and offers no points except quizzes and exams.
He is an Amazing professor. Always reachable before/inside/outside of class. Gives you as chance to correct things if needed with explanation of what was done wrong. Lectures were fun, and understandable. Always gave you a chance to ask questions and participate. Will be taking him for the next level math class.
Choppy English. Not trying to be offensive but can barely understand what is said.
Mr. Lu is a great instructor. He has a thick accent and will not spoon feed you answers, and some people do not like that, however, he is very patient and will go over anything anyone doesn't understand till they get it. He grades mercifully if you show your work. I regretted buying the book, was easy getting the problems from a friend.
Just be prepared to teach yourself a lot. The basics of the chapter are lectured but the homework is tough and a lot of it you'll have to figure out yourself. One of the toughest classes/professors I've had.
Lectures are hard to follow. Not only is it hard to keep up because of his accent, he tends to dodge questions, talk down to the entire class, and ask the class more questions than he gives answers. The test / quiz questions are incongruous with the in class material and assigned homework. The material is easy, but he makes it difficult.
Overall, he's a good professor. In our class, MTH180, the homework is optional, but I strongly recommend that you do the homework. If you don't do the homework or participate, you most likely won't do well. The class is very student led. Attendance is really important, as he gives one problem as a "quiz" problem at the end of each class.
If this is for MTH 176, do not take him. I don't understand the importance of 176 but there aren't any great professors for it.
Not to be mean, but the only way to learn in this class is to ignore the lesson and read the book. He's pretty much just good at handing out sheets with formulas and getting to class on time. The second things get clever it is easy to get lost and a thick accent doesn't help. Only those who teach themselves, have tutors or don't need a teacher pass
The worst math professor ive had so far at wcc. Take calc 3 with Bila instead, hes so much better than this guy.
Just take my word for it and DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU WANT TO DO GOOD IN CLASS!
Terrible teacher. Learned more from watching examples on youtube.
Worst professor I've ever had. I literally improved my grade by skipping lectures and watching YouTube videos (check out Professor Leonard on YouTube if this class is your last option). His accent is very hard to understand. ZERO enthusiasm in the material. Very hard to stay focused. Avoid at all cost!
He's the kind of teacher where if you do everything right and make one tiny algebra mistake, you get a fifty percent, and these problems are hard to begin with. He doesn't do a good job of teaching, more just does problems, and is difficult to understand due to an incredibly thick Chinese accent.
Yin is a great professor. He is a very fair grader and offers many point opportunities to bring your grade up. He gives many quizzes that you can use your notes for, which are always based off of homework problems that have been done in class already. His tests are based on the homework, so it is very straight forward and there are no surprises.
Yin Lu was the worst professor/teacher I have ever had. He is an extremely tough grader, and his tests are very difficult. He does a terrible job of teaching and explaining the material. He also does not answer questions well. I highly recommend staying away from his classes.
One of the worst teacher I have ever taken. He just doesn't connect with you as a student and is just a bad teacher overall.
Great professor! WCC just has a lot of kids who cant respect such a good math teacher and they wont like anyone who teaches this class.
Yin Lu is not an easy A. You have to do a LOT of work outside of class. If you only rely on his lectures, then you will not do well in his class. He made SO many mistakes on the board during lectures. He is actually pretty generous with partial credit. Do not take if you prefer not teaching the material for yourself. Wouldn't recommend for most.
Hard to understand, not helpful with feedback, rude, overall not a fun class to take. Do not recommend and will not take another class with him
If you devote the time and effort to doing your work and paying attention, Mr. Lu is a really good teacher. A lot of people are very rude to him in class, which is very bothersome, but he really does care about his students and gives lots of opportunities for students to not only ask questions but also raise their grade.
It was hard to understand him sometimes. Not really his accent, more word usage. When you ask him a question, he often interrupts you mid sentence, assumes something else and answers that. The tests are hard. The review tests he posts on blackboard are not really helpful. He will test you on things he brushed off during lecture once. Tough grader
Hes a really nice teacher and he works hard to make sure you understand the topics. You have to work hard and do some time on your own like homework or reading the textbook. Do the optional homework too, it helps a lot.
Mr. Lu is a funny, intelligent and caring teacher for Linear Algebra. He is adept at doing homework problems on the board and explaining his thought process behind them. If you are taking his class, I would advise you to go over the quizzes and practice exams as they are very important for the test. Although a picky tough grader, he is helpful.
Not a good teacher, seems very smart though, but his accent is way too much for me to understand, doesn't give good in class notes, I mainly did it on my own, very rude, gives bad notes, puts little to no feedback on tests, entire class has verbally complained about him multiple times, and is by far the worst professor at WCC
I agree with the majority of the responses on here. He dose not care about his students and is very hard to understand. He wont explain anything after he teaches it once. Avoid his class at all costs!
Homie was kinda difficult to understand and took a long time to get his point across. Very nice guy tho.
Lu is hard to understand and doesn't explain what he is doing or teaching; he teaches by reading the textbook to us. He does not grade any homework and it takes 3 weeks or more for him to grade quizzes and tests. He never gives feedback and shows a general lack of care for his job, the class, and the students.
This is worst prof I have ever met. Due to the coronavirus, all classes moved to online. He completely let students study by themselves and not even give ANY LECTURES. He is only available during the "class time" to answer questions. He posts worksheets at the Blackboard and does nothing. How can student learn without having any lectures?
I've literally never heard of a math professor who just gave worksheets and refused to lecture. All classes moved online and he just decided not to do his job. If I wanted to learn Linear Algebra on my own I wouldn't be paying for a class. Absolute joke.
DON'T TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! I'm sure Professor Lu is a very nice guy just not a good teacher to teach online due to Covid-19, he literally expected us to read from the book and get it! Math doesn't work that way he didn't want to provide lectures so dean had to get involved for him to provide them. It was just a BAD EXPERIENCE
This is by far the worst professor that has walked on Earth. Prof. Liu simply neither cares nor is motivated to lecture and teach his students. For example, when the Classes moved online due to COVID-19,he decided to ghost us and never lecture us again,we didn't learn anything for him online. He just hand out barely useful worksheets and disappear
Prof. Lu is a real nice guy and willing to help, but he just doesn't use technology to teach at all, students can bearly see the board he lifts all the time. I would like to take his in person class, since he has the heart to help his students, but online classes are just not working out.
my legs hurt from jumping through so many hoops to try and understand the material in this class. I get 16/30 on my homework without any feedback, there's no way to check your answers, emailed him to ask for help and just seems uninterested/bothered. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
Dont make yourself suffer through professor Lus class. Hes nice and all, but his accent, style of teaching, and unhelpfulness, and class structure is all terrible. He seems too smart for us college students and thinks we should understand with his little explanation. DO NOT RECOMMEND!
He is an excellent teacher. He explains concepts very well. Attending class and taking notes makes your life 10 times easier.
With the class being online due to COVID, Professor Lu's thick accent, and his poor internet quality this class was a nightmare. Read the textbook before class so you know what's going on, as lectures are almost entirely examples. The exam questions are almost exactly the same as the in class examples and HW, so pay attention and do the homework.
His accent is very thick so it makes it almost impossible to understand what he's saying. Half the things that end up on the exams are things he mentions in class once and the things he actually takes time to explain in class are basically irrelevant in the end. His tests are all short answer and all the questions tie into one another. 0/10
You may have to repeat urself if u ask a question, but his accent isnt bad. Want an A? DO THE OPTIONAL HW LISTED IN THE SYLLABUS! (Get the 5th edition textbook bc thats where he picked the problems from) No announcements for worksheets being assigned, so check the homework on BB if u didnt attend class (the file expires Fridays)! Accepts late work.
Easy grader, ie: if you mess up something he is not testing you on but understand the concept he will only take a point or two off. Has an accent as many people have mentioned but if you pay attention it does not impede learning after the 3rd class. He is very sarcastic and tries to make class fun. Don't be afraid to ask questions until you get it.
Professor Lu has a heavy accent, but by the second class you get used to it and if you pay attention; he is easy to understand and is very good at explaining complex concepts. The class is very heavy on test with 20% being practices and the other 80% on tests. He is forgiving while grading exam and will only take off a few points.
Nice and funny guy, but he doesn't actually teach anything; "lectures" consist of him doing problems on the board. I go to class to take down the examples and for the in class practices (worth 20% of the grade). Youtube University fr.
Never followed his own syllabus, dropped all of the Differential Equations-related work from our class, and failed to answer any emails other than those submitting homework. Incredibly frustrating experience which only wasted my time and money. I need to retake the course at another college to get the DiffEQ info I need for the next level course.
Professor Lu knows his subject well and wants students to have the same passion that he has for it. I took him for DifEq which is hard enough class, so it is very easy to fall behind in the material.
I think a lot of people give him flac for his accent, and how he doesn't explain things well. You get used to the accent by week 3 at the latest, and he asks multiple times throughout his lectures whether what he said "made sense to you." He's also good with emails in my experience, so reaching out to him outside of class is pretty easy.
Professor Lu has a very thick accent and it may be especially hard to understand him because of the thick mask he wears. He is a funny guy and clearly extremely knowledgeable on the topic at hand, but I personally did not appreciate his teaching style nor how much he strayed from the textbook which all of the department exams are based on.
He creates a very discouraging classroom environment by being so hard to understand. Since his accent is very hard to adjust to, any feedback on how you solved a problem is very hard to get, leaving students clueless about how to solve problems. If you are forced to take him, DO NOT rely on lectures. Use the exam reviews and the book to study.
Incredibly hard to reach via email and phone. When I had a problem, he didn't help at all and proceeded to hang up on me multiple times. Doesn't know how to use Zoom or other technology. He makes some funny jokes, but I've never felt so lost in a class as everything including the homework, lectures, and syllabi felt incredible unorganized.
If math is not your strong suit, avoid this guy. It was hard to follow him and his all-over-the-place teaching style, and the mask with the accent combo doesn't help either.
Yin Lu is a nice guy and he'll joke with you but dude cannot teach. He's knowledgable of the subject but during lectures it's hard to understand with his accent and mask. When you ask for help he doesn't explain it very well so you have to resort to reading the textbook and figuring it out with other students who also don't know what's going on.
Professor Lu knows the subject well but can be hard to reach. Lectures are unorganized, so reading the textbook and using tools like unstuck ai are key. Exams are based on practice, so stay on top of the work.
