This guy is difficult but very, very fair. His examples are great and he is always nice to everyone in the class. Hard tests but you will know Calculus when you are done.
He is a great teacher. He cares everyone. He explaines problems very well. His review for tests are so helpful. If you understand the review, you will get almost 100% on your tests!

This guy is great! He is very very helpful. His test reviews are great, and the tests themselves are pretty easy.
He is hard to understand for one and two he skips steps! Not good to do in a math class!
I had no problem understanding him. Calculus is a tough subject, but Zhu presents it in a way that's easy to understand. His test reviews are very helpful. He is more than willing to help and is very respectful to students. If you have to take Calculus, Zhu is the way to go!
I don't think that he grades fairly and I don't think that he was very helpful. I would not recommend him for a math 2020 teacher.
Mr. Zhu's test questions were pretty difficult but he teaches things very clearly. His test reviews are really good, he goes through the test question by question and tells you the concept you need to know for each question.
Dr. Zhu is a good instructor. He is genuinely interested in his students success and is willing to help you all he can. I saw him during office hours when I had problems and he was always able to clarify what I was confused about.
Mr. Zhu has a hard time relating to students difficulties who are not math majors. Typical Chinese attitude in that perfection is required and you will find little to no enjoyment or satisfication learning the material because it is excessive. I have never come close to failing a class I invested so much time and effort in!
I really enjoyed his class. He has a great sense of humor and does an above average job of teaching. Other students I've talked to all liked him also. He grades fair and is helpful. I would take him for more math, recommended.
Dr. Zhu is the best math teacher I have ever had! He is always careful to face the class and speak clearly. He loves his math and tries to impart that to the students.
He likes to teach and can help you if you try. This is not an easy class. He makes your earn your grade. He might be hard to understand but if you pay attention and do your work you can pass his class. Take this class if you want to LEARN the matterial. If you want the easy "A" then this class is not the class for you.
speak english or go home
Dr. Zhu is 100% chinese in that he expects perfection from you. He is an amazing teacher, though. It was a hard class. I've never got less than an A in Math until him. I got a C. I was intimidated as hell at first by him, but by the end, I was very comfortable w/ the class and would definitely take another math class from him!
I think this guy is the worst teacher I've ever had. Over half the people in the class failed. If you looking for an easy way to get past 1050 don't take him.
This guy is a total idiot. I hate him and his stupid class. He is the worst teacher at UVSC
took me about a week to get through his accent, after that he was an amazing teacher. He gives hints throughout the class as to exactly what was on the exam... follow the hints, know the hints, ace the exams. how easy is that? He does expect you to know how to do the math.
Hard to understand. Not a fun class. Would not recommend if you want to pass.
It's a hard class, it requires a lot of studying, but he will work with you, if you need to turn in an assignment late or something. Prepare a lot of time for exam--at least 2 hours. He helps you a lot for the exams. He does have an accent but it doesn't take long to get used to.
It is a hard class but he explains concepts very clear and really helps you understand it.
He really helps you understand the class even though it is a hard one. He is willing to help you learn and understand it. I would recommend him.
He has an accent, but even with the accent he explains things really well so that you can understand. I ended up with a B- in the class, and Im terrible at math!
He does have a bit of an accent that took me a week to get used to. But after that his classes were great! He's really concerned about his students, more so than a lot of professors I've known. His tests can be hard just because of the topic, but he gives AMAZING reviews just before them and pretty much tells you problem for problem what's on them.
I did not like this prof. I love math, and i got a B in intermediate algebra. Zhu would give only 10 questions on a test, and he took off points if you didn't show all your work, even if the answer was correct. I did well on the assignments, but when it came to the test, he just worded the questions so horrible, I couldn't understand what he wanted
His questions are worded wierd on tests and it takes half of the time just to figure out what he is saying. He has an accent too, which took a while to get used to. He grades assignments bad. I wouldn't recommend him.
I have always been good at math, but not after this class. this teacher didnt explain anything very well. I love chinese people, but this guy was jerk. he made you feel so stupid when you asked a question. but he might be good compared to other math teachers at UVSC.
Probably the best math teacher at UVSC, has his PHD in math. But he's from China, it takes a week or two to get used to his accent. He runs his schedule strictly by the syllabus, you WILL complete every section and chapter of the book in his class. So it's a pro's & con's kinda thing. Take him and struggle, or take someone else, and struggle
This professor was challenging but I learned a lot from him. He is probably one of the smartest Math professors I've taken classes from. He goes over things very quickly but that allows him to show lots of examples. If you really want to learn I would suggest taking math from this professor.
His class is very fast paced but he goes over everything in class that you need to know for the tests. His tests are easier than the homework and he tests in the testing center which is nice for those of us who like to take our time. My suggestions are don't miss class, especially on test review days, he goes over strategies for every problem.
Great teacher! His tests are exactly what he says they will be. Take his classes and show up and there is no way you will not pass!
I love Dr. Zhu! I've had him for three different classes (Trig, Calc I and II). He has an accent, but I didn't have a hard time with it. Show up for class because he moves fast! If you have questions, ask him! His tests are sometimes hard, but he will tell you almost exactly what is on the test during his reviews.
Zhu is in my opinion one of the greatest math professors at a public university today. He actually cares if you learn and will do anything in his power to make sure you do. If you take any sort of analysis at UVU try to take it from Zhu. Hes also a great comedian if you get him going.
Dr. Zhu is one of the best math teachers i've ever had. He explains stuff extremely well. But ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS DO HOMEWORK. If you don't, you will DIE on the tests. I attended all but 3 classes, and got a D. HW is 10% of your grade, but if you don't do it, good luck on the tests. I don't recommend him for slow learners, either. He goes fast.
Dr. Zhu is an awesome math teacher. He is very straightforward and doesn't try to trick you as the student. He is very helpful in both homework and tests.
He is a funny guy! His accent is hard at first, but you'll get past it. Do your homework, come to class, and go to the review! His tests are very clear and he lets you know what you need to study. Occasionally extra credit.. do it. Love him!
He is a great teacher, very helpful and clear. Once you get used to his accent, which takes the first few days, then you are good to go. He gives some challenging homework, but then uses homework problems on tests and he reviews for tests in a very helpful way. Calc 2 is difficult but he made it much easier, he gives clear examples, and he's funny.
His accent is really hard to understand but after you get the hang of it he is great. His tests are based off the homework. There is a lot of homework but if you do it you will do well in his tests.
I took a hybrid class which is 80% online and 20% in class. If you can't motivate yourself to study be wary of taking a hybrid class, teacher is very thorough and clear and always reviews test samples, you will have a quiz every day in class so don't miss class because that's alot of points and it will ultimately help you to be in class.
Teaches very well. It is not mandatory to go to class, but I would highly recommend it since he gives examples that are in the homework and possibly on the test in class.
Zhu is an awesome teacher! He is hard to understand a little at first but you get used to it. He gives a lot of homework but if you go to class and study you can do well. He gives examples in class for your homework and tests. His tests are never surprising he gives you a good idea of what will be on them.
Hardest class ever. Zhu was funny occasionally... He was not very helpful. Often when you asked questions he would just laugh at you. He was difficult to understand a lot of the time. I would not recommend him to anyone. He is very intelligent, but not very good at teaching or caring.
Very good math teacher Explains things. Expect to remember things from previous courses (Such as 3D shapes and their formulas). Gives you the main topics for the test for reviewing, which is really nice.
Good: clear expectations on the tests, esp if you go to the reviews. Helpful and kind if you meet him after class. Offers EC from time to time. Bad: Accent can be tricky at first. Way too much graded homework. He does move quickly, and expects that you remember formulas from previous classes.
He is awesome! This was my second time taking the course. I failed the first one, did the same amount of work, and got an A in his. He is an extremely easy grader, gives extra credit and tells you almost exactly what will be on the test, question for question.
very nice, funny and super easy. tells you exactly what will be on the test, gives you extra credit, and even if you get a test prob wrong, he'll only take off a couple of points.
Worst teacher I've ever had. He is not interested in helping you. He is hard to understand. I've taken up to Calc. 3 and got all A's in math every semester. I had a GPA of 3.9 until I took Zhu's class. I am willing to put in the work outside of class. The problem was I never know WHAT to study! VERY UNCLEAR ABOUT EVERYTHING.
Linear Algebra is a hard class! As tough as it was Zhu was SUPER helpful! He took the time to make us test-reviews that were SUPER helpful and made the tests a lot less stressful! All the problems from the tests were almost directly off the reviews. Zhu wants so much for everyone to succeed in this class he even gave a us hints on the final.
His tests are extremely hard. He is a very hard grader and can be very condescending at times. If you are taking a lot of credits per semester (I took 16), you will not have the time necessary to study for this class. Take it from another teacher! I studied so hard and it never paid off.
I had Zhu for both Calc 3 and Algebra. He will hold you accountable but he is very fair and wants you to succeed.
BEST TEACHER EVER. I'm not stellar at math, but he was incredible. Don't let his accent scare you; he enunciates and is easy to understand. He always answers our questions and has a great sense of humor. Most of our notes include our homework problems, and he always has a thorough in-class review before the tests. Very highly recommended.
This class was super easy! He gave a test review before tests and it covered 100% of the tests. If you study the review and do homework which doesn't overwhelm you will get A! If you are pretty good at math take his class!
Funny guy, he uses homework questions for some of the tests. He also does in class practice problems and gives extra credit for them. Theres no way around the homework is a must.
I love this professor. He is always willing to help outside of class, and you can tell her genuinely wants the students to succeed. His tests are hard, but he preps the class well, and offers hints if you ask for them. Will definitely take again.
Professor Zhu was really great about helping the students and working through lots of examples for the lessons. He prepped us for the tests and wanted us to do well, which really helped. I really enjoyed his class, even though the material wasn't always easy, and would totally take math from him again.
I took Algebra and Trig from Dr. Zhu and will continue to follow him through math. He works to give clear examples and prepares you very well for tests. Also counts homework and extra credit. Shows many ways to work problems. I felt like he has provided a very solid foundation for higher level math. Great professor, extremely knowledgeable!
Entire semester is planned out from the beginning. Occasionally he is unclear when explaining things, but for the most part he does an excellent job at explaining. His test reviews are spot on - the tests were exactly what he went over during the test review, and that includes the test review for the final. Very fair grader, definitely recommend.
Dr. Zhu makes Calculus make sense. He gives clear examples of homework problems, and if you actually complete the test reviews, you should have no problem with the tests themselves. He is funny in a very sarcastic way, and his comments make class much more enjoyable. I loved Dr. Zhu's class.
He has a very prominent accent, however, it didn't prove to be a problem after the first 30 minutes of listening to his lecture. I'd say the hardest part of his class was his grading scale. Tests are worth 90% of your grade while the homework is only 10%. Seems to be too heavy on tests if you ask me but some people liked it!
Dr. Zhu was the best math teacher I have had. He is clear in his examples and has a sense of humor. He was willing to answer any question. I would take all my math classes from him if I could.
Mr. Zhu is a very funny teacher, and uses a lot of great examples to help you understand the material. The class is a bit test heavy 600 points coming from the tests, and the last 300 points are two tests in the final weeks, but otherwise he is a great math teacher.
He is very picky. I usually don't struggle with math, but in this class I did. I left class feeling confused and he didn't cover everything in class that was on the homework. If you are good at teaching yourself, take his class. But if you aren't, I recommend taking Trig from a different professor.
I've always done well with math, but this class gave me major anxiety! The lectures were long and deep with few helpful examples. The review for the tests do not prepare you for the actual thing, and they are worth 90% of your grade. Homework is heavy and only grades 1 prob! He's so condescending if you struggle with a concept too. Don't take.
This was too hard for a 3 credit class. He spent time discussing the theory of the formula, then after 20 minutes, you get the formula you need. I do well in this class, but he was difficult. He's a funny guy, but a horrible teacher.
This is the second time I have taken a Math 1060 class and this time I understood what was being taught. He gives plenty of examples and Professor Zhu is willing to help if you ask.
Prof. Zhu is an amazing teacher. This was a hard math class, but he made it very possible. He knows it is a tough class, and gives generous amounts of extra credit. He is always willing to help with any question, and does difficult homework problems as examples in class. His lectures are clear, and his humorous comments make the class much better.
I've been afraid of math my whole life. Taking this MATH100R made me nervous as it is a placement course to help you review and prep for the exam to get into the math class you need. Mr. Zhu saved me. We use a program called Aleks and it requires 6 hrs each week. His encouragement & feedback not only helped me face math, but I passed the exam well!
Yingxian Zhu is the best math professor I've had. The class structure was easy to follow. I was never confused about what was expected. It was difficult however. Expect to spend at least an hour a day if you want an A. He usually spends the class time teaching the chapters then doing several example problems.
Dr. Zhu is a very good math teacher. He cares about your success, and he gives the opportunity to earn it. If you don't go to the lectures you are not likely to do well in the class. Sometimes after class he gives extra credit practice questions for the test which are very similar to or identical to the questions on the tests.
Good teacher, he knows his stuff and knows where his students struggle. Gives practice questions that are similar if not the same as the test. Good teacher for a hard subject. He does everything he can to help you do well on a test, as long as you put in the work. No note cards, tests written so you don't have to use a calculator. He is Sarcastic.
I took Math 100R from Dr. Zhu, which is a math placement class. This class was fairly easy, you do have to log 6+ hours (2 hours in class and 4 hours outside of class each week) in the Math program each week and if you miss class, you have to add an additional 2 hours to that. There's no final, just a placement test at the end. 10/10 for Dr. Zhu!
It was very hard to understand his teaching style, but he grades very fairly. He expects you to remember everything from your previous classes and expects a lot out of you. When he does reviews, he basically tells you what to study which is very helpful. Listen to his hints in the review! Overall he wants his students to succeed so i would take him
Hes slightly difficult to understand, but a good professor. I had difficulty because the homeworks, usually due 2 times a week with about 20 questions each, taking upwards of 6 hours a week, was only worth a tiny 10% or your grade were as the 5 exams and 2 part final eat up the remaining 90%. It felt disproportionate and he was a very hard grader
This is a very, very good professor, his lectures are very interesting and he actively gives feedback, if you have any questions in class, you can tell him in any way and he will explain it to you in detail, and the extra credit given will help you to get the grade you want successfully.
He is a really tough grader, and his exams are fairly complex. He will shame you in front of everyone if you don't understand a topic well, and he gets easily frustrated. Lectures are fairly easy to follow, and the criteria is structured well. But if you forget something, he is good at condescending you in class. I'm not exaggerating by any means.
Professor Zhu has got to be one of my favorite math professors. He can be hard at times to understand but he always makes his lectures interesting. He always gives a review for you to do before the test that is very similar to the actual test. Great professor, would take again.
Professor Zhu is one of my favorite professors and I would take all my math classes through him if I could. He is a tough grader, but his lectures made sense and he goes over the material in ways you can understand. His entire lecture consists of mainly example problems so you really know how to directly apply the math to homework and tests. 10/10
I took Calculus II from Professor Zhu, and loved it. He is a great teacher and excels at pushing people to improve. His class was difficult, but rewarding and I felt like I learned a lot from it.
Professor Zhu really seems like a nice person, and he obviously knows his stuff. But his grading system is absolutely horrible, it feels as if he docks points just to dock points at times, so any minute mistake loses a ton of points. He is also incredibly condescending towards the class, and belittles people if they say something incorrect.
Very condescending and shames students who don't understand a particular topic. FOR SENIOR LEVEL MATHEMATICS, If you fall behind on an exam or missed a problem on the exam, without exaggerating, you will end up on his degenerate-list of students. He's difficult to visit with on his office hours for help because he will make you feel stupid. G'luck.
Professor Zhu is such a good teacher. If you are wanting to test out of classes he makes it very easy to understand how much work is required to do so. He's also super kind and helpful.
Dr. Zhu is the man! I took Calc 1 from Yingxian and can't recommend him highly enough. He is very intelligent and answers any questions students may have during or after class. Dr. Zhu genuinely cares for his students and their success. He notices when students are gone and makes an effort to help students who put forth their own effort.
Great math teacher! He definitely knows his stuff and teaches a deeper understanding of mathematics. The accent is difficult to understand at first, but you get used to it. The tests are difficult, but if you pay attention during the lectures and do all the review problems, you'll do fine. He goes pretty fast during the lectures so pay attention
This is a tough class, but I thoroughly enjoyed having professor Zhu. Expectations were set from the very beginning, and he tells you exactly what to expect on the test with no surprises. He even offers some extra credit on every other test. I would not hesitate to take another class from him.
I had him last spring and he was great! The accent can be tough at first, but you get used to it. Very professional, yet has fun when he's lecturing. He does everything he can to help us. He helped me understand the material very well. Lots of homework but its necessary. I didn't find Calc that hard, but take that with a grain of salt. Great class!
Yingxian is one of the best professors at UVU. It is unfortunate that he is retiring.
Professor was enthusiastic and wanted every student to succeed. That being said, this class was challenging in a 6-week format. 3 homework assignments a week and an exam every other. The full-term class is much more manageable I imagine. Tests had homework/review questions on them and the review is VERY test specific. Lots of work, but I loved it.
If you are going down a mathematical career pathway, Dr. Zhu is invaluable! If you are going down a science track and not great at formal math formulas, maybe not the greatest match. His lectures are thorough and he challenges his students to do math in their head. Dr. Zhu has a great connection with his students to balance out the formalities.
Zhu is very knowledgeable, and will help you understand if you ask questions, but communicates with students in a manner that clearly could be improved (he can sound condescending, talking in a manner that comes off as dismissive of students' ability). Zhu seemed too strict on grading as well considering the innate difficulty of the course.
Tests are worth a ton in this class and you will not be able to bring any notes in, so be sure to memorize all of your formulas. Otherwise, he is a brilliant professor and does a great job with his lectures. He is super willing to help you out if you meet him in his office.
The lectures are structured well, but Prof. Zhu can come across as condescending if you struggle. Definitely use the textbook and resources like unstuck AI for studying - they really help offset the tough grading.
