Incomprehensible teching style.. and temperamental
He may sound mean in the beginning and you may not understand his lectures clearly but if you do the study guide and hand in the homeworks in time you are set. Very good with grading and very knowledgeable. Easy A or B.
This guy just gave us some power point slides and expected us to teach ourselves. Half of the classes he was absent from and his TA just played videos. The only people who recieved A's were students that kept on kissing his ass and were in his other classes.

easy A or B as long as you turn all your work in. never mind teaching style. if you do the readings and assignments, you get an A. You must read the material to pass. All i did was read the book and sleep when the lights when out. I got a B.
My love. Schachmurove is a funny man.
He is not good at statistics math, But he is professional in SAS programming that has been already obsolete for statistics. If you have patience, you could get B and hopefully learn something.
My Love:), He is the worst professor I ever had at City College. You might get an easy B but even that B is discusting! He makes fun of students and is very rude. You don't learn anything. Try to stay as far away from him as possible.
Rude. Thick accent. Uses powerpoint excessivly. Outsized ego. I got an A in the class but i feel like i learned absolutely zilch. Not until i took eco 350 with Chow did i understand the coursework for this class. he likes hot chocolate.
Very abusive towards students and funny. If you need to take Econ 104 as a prereq and want an easy A then take his class. Just do the study guide and you will get an A. Lectures are boring and have nothing to do with the book or the course but you have to attend otherwise "YOU GET AN F". Easiest A!
He has attitude towards student. He didn't even show up half of the classes. Oversized ego and and very bad personality
What a joke! This guy gives you busy work. You won't learn a thing. All of the students coming out of CCNY thinking they know econometrics are going to get a rude awakening, and this will give CCNY economnics students a bad rep... This guy has to go!
How did he stay in CCNY so long!!! Does nobody know what kind of person he is!!! Very bad reputation for college. Horrible personality, rude, does not come to class, teaches nothing

Take him if you're gonna do the work.Take home midterm, and easy final.Just do the work, and take it to final to use, and you'll get an A from the final.A little rude, but does his best to help students.I really haven't seen any professor that care about the future of the students as much as he does.Highly recommended.
If you want to do nothing but show up for class and get an A or a B for that then take him. I took his class and ended up with an A with only a total of 3 hours of studying outside of class. His lectures are outdated and very boring. If you have insomnia, record his lectures and play it before you try to sleep... you will sleep just fine.
He thinks he is hot stuff because he teaches at Penn State. His notes are outdated and do not match the course description or the book for the class. But the exams are easy and grading is even better. Just do the study guide and you'll easily get a B... even an A.
Very rude, very lazy
i took this during summer, this guy's a joke, even by CUNY standards. I took this class to learn something, I have to take this again in my real school, cause i learned nothing in his class. he made the students stay til 9 PM to watch wall street journa commercials. another example, he told me "i will beat you up" I said lets go, and he backed down
he does not deserve even to comment. extrime rude, empty minded. better to be a cafteria in charge rather than professor. he spoiled our future.

Whoever said below Penn State - its UPenn, a bit different. He is a briallant guy, a bit of a ass, but brillant. You CAN NOT fail his class. If you show up, the worst you will get is a C. Its a tough class and gives you tons of senselss busy work that he doesnt grade. Fill in some nonsense yourself and read the book and its an EASY grade
i've ever seen such a empty minded prof.(?)the reality is-he doesn't know the subject matter at all. econometrics is very important. don't take guys, take somewhere hunter, brlyn, boruch, lehman. i took mistakenly, i'll have to take agian, econ. dept of ccny is going down because of him important sub. but taught by stupid guy. everyone regrets.
breezes by the subject and gives busy work that has nothing to do with class.
Guy knows his stuff but has no clue on how to deliver. He lacks some serious people to people skills. Avoid, take in another school. I've heard too much from other students AND professors/staff.
"My love!" how would i begin to describe you? The most discussed professor by the students. The strangest teacher in the whole world. He loves to teach you "how to fish", but people don't understand. He loves saying "good morning america", but not sure he really loves the country so much. Take him, because you have to. just not so seriouly.
OMG!!!!!!B4 I took his class,i thought I already met the worst prof in the world. After I took his class,I realized the significant meaning of BAD prof!PLZ PLZ DONT,,even u hear someone said he is good,he must lie!!A lot of homework-u r unable to finish on time!None of the homework relate to the class!!!bad attitude-never answer students questions!
DONT TAKE HIS CLASS.. HE IS A BAD PROF W/ HORRIBLE ATTITUDE & DOESNT KNOW HOW TO RESPECT STUDENTS. GIVES WAY TOO MUCH WORK AND NOT ENOUGH TIME..BUT GLUCK IF REALLY HAVE TO TAKE HIM.
best prof. @ City&Econ dept by far. students are lazy, shachmurove is setting/raising the bar for a COLLEGE level course! work hard, get an A, and possibly a full time job at a top I-Bank like 3 students in our class did. mainly thanks to shachmurove's invited lectures by visiting professionals from the Fed, NYSE, JPMorgan who taught practicalities
He is one of my favorite professors ? very knowledgeable about the field and helpful. However, he does require you to work, which many people are not used to at City College. Has a great sense of humor and a pleasure to work with. Definitely take his class if you want to learn!
DON'T TAKE HIM, JUST THE WASTE OF TIME. HE NEVER TEACHES THE SUBJECT, HE WASTES YOUR TIME WITH SOMETHING UNWORTHY (SUCH AS CLEANLINESS OF OUR CLASS, GOOGLE EARTH ETC.) NOWADAYS I WORK IN MORTGAGE / EXPORT - IMPORT COMP. AND I FEEL LACK OF STATISTICS KNOWLEDGE,THAT HE DIDN'T TEACH. THE WORST PROF IN MY LIFE.
This is not an easy class, but is extremely interesting and the professor makes every effort to help students obtain a good grade. He is also well informed in regards to his subject matter.
This is not an easy class, but is extremely interesting and the professor makes every effort to help students obtain a good grade. He is also well informed in regards to his subject matter.
I am not sure who has been writing these reviews. The comments on the second page are closer to reality. He does want you to learn but dont know how to deliver. Entire class is reading powerpoint slides. Does not follow syllabus at all assignments are random and unplanned. Very stressful not to know what to expect. Please avoid if possible.
the teacher is great as long as you do your work and pay attention in class. Great sense of humor! you'll have a good time in his class while learning everything you need to know about the subject.
If you don't want to learn anything, don't take this professor's class. He challenges students and expects students to challenge themselves. He is well versed in economics, and is very well respected in the academic community. He prepares you for the real world. Absolutely no bull****. Highly recommended
he prepares you for the future/real world by expecting and motivating students to seek knowledge rather than being given a fish (spoon-fed)! Highly recommended if you want to learn and develop as an economist.
He will help you if you expect to help yourself. Motivates you to seek knowledge and fgrow as an economist
Take him only if you want to learn and strive for more than average. Will help you develop skills needed to succeed in the future
this professor has helped me develop skilled necessary for success in the field. He motivates students to learn and obtain knowledge. If you expect to grow as an economist, while improving my overall skills he is without a doubt highly recommended!
Prof. Shachmurove is pure genius and passionate about SAS Programming. He is well spoken and gets his points across clearly. He encourages you to be yourself and to use your brain which is very required as an economist. Overall, his exams are not very difficult compared with those of other professors and he is a fair grader. I highly recommend him.
Incompetent; Worst professor ever.
Mean, unprofessional, and arrogant. He has favorites in the calss, does not follow the syllabus at all and assignments are random and unplanned. Very stressfull not knowing what to expect. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Prejudist,he uses intimidation to make you fell inferior than everybody else. Please do not take him. There are other colleges within CUNY offer the same subject.
I do not recommend this professor. I was completely dissatisfied with the academic experience I received under his tutelage.
Shachmurove is a waste of potential. It is pretty obvious that he has the knowledge and experience to really make a difference to economic students. But he's lazy. He does not teach, he shows the publisher's chapter outlines on slides. He gives easy multi. choice exams, but assigns a mind numbing amount of busy work that he never looks at.
If he knows he can get under your skin...HE WILL. Besides that hes harmless. just likes to say "good morning america" and annoy you for his own pleasure. but its really not that serious. Bring your book to class and he will be happy...but you dont use the book he just likes to see it.
Incompetent. A lot of busy work that isn't necessarily relevant to the course material. Knows the material, but cannot adequately teach it to someone else.
This man has to be the worst professor at CUNY. He is arrogant, patronizing and just plain mean spirited. His homework assignments have no relevancy to the class. He wants to teach students how to learn for themselves, but his approach is terrible. I don't think he'd still be at the school if he weren't tenured. Avoid if possible!
Very intelligent and has the ability to make difficult statistical concepts simple. Has a great sense of humor and makes it fun to learn the material. The exams are multiple-choice which is a plus. Highly recommended!
This professor is awful! No rules apply when entering his class room. Slides are from the publisher and students read them off in class. He does not teach any course concepts, so you have to learn the material on your own. I am a visiting student and I am outraged by the poor quality of teaching. Do not take his class!
Single worst prof I've ever had. He puts no effort whatsoever into preparing for class and is genuinely hostile to students who ask questions. He hurries his way through crummy PowerPoint slides, thereby ensuring that no one learns anything at all. He also piles on homework that he doesn't bother to check. I can't believe City College employs him.
He's definitely funny..thats the only good part! for the rest...he doesnt explain, seems like he assumes you are an economist already when you are actually taking an "intro",gives lots of homeworks he doesnt even checks!
where do I begin. He does not explain things clearly, he is pretty lazy, give lots of work for nothing, jokes are funny(@ first) I passed the class with a lot of struggle. You can out smart him and pass if u pick up his technique in teaching.
just go to class and hand in your work, youll get a C. if he knows you or you participate alot he'll give you an A or B.
He has a unique teaching method which requires you to learn on your own, and do assignments which mimic real economist's daily activities. Yes, you might not be the relevance of the HW immediately but in retrospect I can't be any happier to have taken this prof. Lastly, if you don't expect to work hard don't bother taking his course!
he is not as bad as people make him out to be
He is great. teaches you things you can learn on your own and can use outside of class and the future. take him definately.
He's greast.Gets you thinking out of the box and getting involved as a real economist.Highly recommended to take his class but expect ti attend and oarticipate. He's def. one of the best prof. I've had. others that wrote bad comments prob. failed becaused they out in no effort and never attended class.you should be honored to be in his class.
the econ prof at city college. teaches students how to succeed after school. explains questions very clearly. very fair grading. carers very much about the students. teaches difficult concept in ways that can be easily understood by students. uses technology efficiently. encourages students to study to perform well. work hard and u do very well
Good professor, had him for macro. Made info that would normally be dry interesting. Do the work, go to class and you'll be fine.
Even though I got an easy A in his class, it did not change the fact that he is the worst professor I have ever seen
I'm extremely shocked to see so many nice comments about this professor. He is absolutely useless. he doesn't care about his students. He gives (2) 20 page papers that are due within 3 weeks of each other that have nothing to do with the course. He uses powerpoint but skips most of them. Barely uses the textbook. 3 Multiple choice test.
This Professor is Nice and THAT'S IT. HE Wants you to make it far in life but does not help you not one bit to make it. All he'll do is complain about economic events so that you be aware of them. NOT helpful, Not easy,. But he is a nice person but cant teach. Sorry.
I swear he must have paid people to write good reviews for him, he is the worst teacher I've ever came across. He's very rude and disrespectful and does not care about students at all. He does curve the grades which is a good thing, i mean he has too, nobody does good on his test because hes such a bad teacher.
He is rude and insults his students. But he is joking most of the time. If you do not take his "You get F" seriously, then it's ok. Study, listen, read the textbook 5 times, make sure you ask for his help and you will get a good grade. Had him for econometrics, law, and either micro or macro. The harder the class, the better he is.
There will be a lot of readings in this course. Make sure you read the chapters before class or else it gets confusing. Do all your homework and assignments and you'll be guaranteed a C. Study hard!
Great teacher, explain well, goo d sense of humor, extremely available to students, very helpful.
Gives unnecessary assignments, unclear information, and act disrespectful towards students during class.
As a student and a T.A. of the class, he's a bad professor. Completely lazy and rude to students. He doesn't check assignments, only test grades. Its an easy A, just do all assignments with minimum work and pass his exams. Three exams, NO FINAL, curves like crazy. (beware, he tells students to write good reviews about him on this website.)
All i can say, he is the worst professor I have seen. Class is easy, but gives so much work that does not even count toward the final grade. pointless and useless! three test are curve like crazy. however, you have no idea where those questions can come from. And it is difficult to understand him in lecture too.
Professor Shachmuorve was simply a professor that wants it's students to pay attention for the whole lecture. Any objections to that will lead him saying I will give you a "F" Anyways, just do your work (write nonsense) and you do not even have to pass your exams you are guaranteed a C. No finals. 3 exams that come from online. Memorize them for A
I don't understand why everyone is complaining. He is clear about what he expects from you, everything is on the syllabus. He expects you to follow the syllabus and be responsible for all the material. Just read the book, understand the material, go to class, participation counts, and ace the exams and you're good. Even provides practice exams.
Does not respect students. Intimidates the class and picks on students for not spelling his name correctly. Only nice to his TA but shouts at everyone else in class. Says "I will fail you" at least once each class. Lectures are nothing like exams and lot's of unnecessary work in his class. He has a very heavy accent so its hard to understand him.
If you are looking to learn any material DO NOT take this professor! He is a very smart man but has no tolerance for anything. He expects you to learn on your own which is fine to a certain extent. However, his assignments are irrelevant to the class. If you have to take him, his tests are online so find them and memorize answers!
Worst teacher in the department. Made us write essays that he didnt even check or grade for that matter. Even made us prepare a presentation which he never graded aswell. Too much work for nothing at all.
He is the most unpolite person i have ever known
Avoid at all cost. Makes you do pointless work and is very rude. Not a good professor and very pessimistic. Tells students they should always follow rules and doesnt inspire students to try and make a change. It may not seem like a big deal. But he says it every day and its very depressing. Cant teach and syllabus is a joke. Dont take!
It is the worst professor I have ever had the disgrace to meet. Does not teach, does not answer questions, he is disrespectful and has an annoying and insulting "sense of humor" if you can still call that humor.
Really bad professor. Do not take him. First day of class, assigns 30 pages essay and for each page, write a summary of each publish work. So you have to summaries 30 journals. Then another 30 pages after two weeks following. The test are not fair because there will be times where he did not teach the chapter of that test. He's not very reasonable.
He is very nice professor and well informed about the topic.
This is a really great professor. First, extremely knowledgeable, a veteran in his field. Second, very kind, humane person who truly cares about his students. Third, you learn a great deal by analyzing and presenting on six path-breaking papers in the field. Fourth if you do the work, he will award you a good grade you deserve, very fair and nice.
You learn absolutely nothing from his class. He drones on and on like a robot. The class started out as 35 kids ended up with 10. Everyone scared he's too harsh. He don't even read his papers. Light work don't be fooled by the grade.
Prof. Shachmurove is an great professor. He is knowledgeable and always willing to help his students. His class is interesting and insightful. I would recommend his class to anyone interested in learning economics.
Prof. Yochanan Shachmurove gave us a good lecture in the class. The class is really insightful and we have learned many things in his class!
I took international trade with him. He has a very good and broad knowledge of the subject, so in addition to the course materials, you can discuss current affairs related to international trade. He is a kind person and you are also welcome to ask questions in the class, which makes the class more active. I enjoyed the course and learned a lot.
This is an excellent professor. He exposes you to latest in economic research and lets you write book reports and papers summarizing what you have learned. What more could you ask for? He has reams of experience in international and has been published in leading journals. For grading, it is really entirely up to you as to how much you have done.
He is a genius. It was really a great great honor that I had a course with him. Best teacher i have ever had.
I have some general knowledge about Economics before I joined his class and without doubt he is an expert on his field of studies. Some students may find his teaching method as unusual like writing reports, group projects or presentations but I am sure it is very helpful as Economics is not an easy subject and you have to immerse yourself into it.
Horrible...
The lowest grade he gives is a C and your grade is based on 3 simple exams, he may not be a great person, but if you can get over all that, it's an easy A, he doesn't grade anything except exams, he asked us to download his articles and write summarize, I did 0 of them and still got an A.
He is really disrespectful and rude to students. He just read slides while he is sitting. Maybe he is a good professor, but definitely not a lecturer.
I rated this hilarious and inspirational because there's absolutely no limit to how bad this class is. At least he puts up the slides but regardless, that class is just reading slides, he's condescending, Also 40-60 slides presentation won't be graded. Bless the days that we have on his class.
Prof Shachmurove is a great prof ! Took him for International Economics and learned a lot. You are grades solely on 3 exams, he gives practice exams for each exam so youre prepared for the actual exam. You are required to do 2 presentations , not graded, however good for your own knowledge because it forces you to learn about someone / something
Reading is a must in the class. The tests rely on it. The class is test heavy but everything is provided in the slides and the book in my case (superfreakonomics, which was actually interesting and quick to read). He is a little tough on students but is very knowledgable. I found him to be funny and blunt. I got an A in the class.
Professor Shachmurove is very straightforward. Do the work and you will pass. There is 2 powerpoint projects and 3 exams. He grades according to class average.
He only grades you off the quizzes, and with the corona outbreak, It's MANDATORY to mail him a usb instead of using you know EMAIL? Also those positive reviews on this site is clearly fake. " I find him funny and blunt", you're clearly the joke whoever wrote that. Surely you bream of experience as well too.
I had Prof. Shachmurove for 2 courses this semester and I learned a lot from research on my own. He prepares you to research the way an economist should, so I understand why he assigns long projects. Do not be fooled by the other bad reviews of him! He is extremely caring, he will only treat you the way you deserve to be treated if you're lazy!
No one fails in his class, it is curve based. He gives 3 exams, 2 40 slide powerpoint projects and in between assignments based on the textbook. It is a lot of work but he assigns it to prepare you for work in a real world setting where you have to do research and presentations. The exams mainly determines your grade but so does participation.
Read the textbook thoroughly and you will do well on his exams. Also don't wait last minute to start your projects do small amounts over the coarse of the semester.
He's a good professor. Very knowledgeable the course. You will find yourself doing homework that you will find silly but its a easy going class. He makes it clear what he expects from the students.
JUST WORK FOR YOUR GRADE AND HE WILL SEE THAT AND GRADE ACCORDINGLY. HE IS NOT A BAD PROFESSOR AT ALL,.
I took Prof. Shachmurove's intermediate macroeconomics class as an undergrad on Spring 2015 and got an A. His class was challenging but that is why I had the motivation to study hard because I was determined to ace the class. Now I am a graduate student pursuing MA on economics and I would love to take his class again if that's possible.
All he did was read off the textbook's slides. Two PowerPoint projects that don't count toward the grade but you have to do them. You are not going to learn in his class if you have other more major classes that you need. You should take him if you want an easy class for your other harder classes. He wants cameras on ALL THE TIME.
Professor Shackmurovw is a very knowledgeable professor like many but he seems to have a severe interest deficit in his class. He reads all of his slides and doesnt try to make the Class interesting. Economics is a very useful topic so it is good to pay attention but you can just read the textbook and youll be fine. Gives two PowerPoint projects.
He's an old robot. Doesn't care about the material since he reads verbatim from Cengage slides. He threatens to fail you if you don't complete two 50-slide presentations which don't count towards your grade?? Make it make sense. He also forces the class to MAIL him a USB with your tests and slides or you guessed it, you fail. Don't even bother.
Our class was smaller, so participation and being prepared mattered. His class was challenging, but that is why I had the motivation to work hard. The course was also at a Master's level course, so reading and work are expected. He is very knowledgeable in Internation Economics and so it's important to ask questions to get the most of the class.
Our class was smaller, so participation and being prepared mattered. His class is flexible and not only care about the test book. The course was a Master's level course, it includes a lot of reading material . He is very knowledgeable so if you keep asking you should know a lot!
He's a genuinely caring Professor that wants you to learn. We read a lot of Econ papers throughout the course, which is a great opportunity to learn about how research is done on a graduate level. The lectures at times are monotone since he reads off the slides, but if you learn the material better on your own like I do, it's not an issue.
He doesn't teach a word & expects students to know everything & teach the class. He makes students present their hw for the entire two-hour lecture. This hw requires students to create 50-60 PP slides that will not count towards the final grade. Your semester's grade depends on 20 multiple choice questions (10 MCQ each exam with 20 min time limit).
He just uploads his NYU courses and that's it, then prepare yourself for the exam, which is also very disorganized.
Rude and misogynist. Try to avoid him at all!
He's alright if you're okay with self-teaching. He usually reads the slides during lectures and doesn't really expand. There are 6 exams (3 graded, 3 practice, 20 mc each), they were pretty simple. He reuses questions a lot though so the questions overlap. He's easy if you look past his personality. He's funny in a "he did not just say that," way.
This is the worst professor I have ever had. He's very rude, not very lenient on assignments, bad communication and gives lots of unnecessary assignments. He forces you to complete two 30+ page PowerPoint presentations and practice exams that he won't grade. Only thing he grades on are 2 exams. 1 good thing is that he curves the final grade.
Lectures are disorganized, but using unstuck study and the textbook can help prep for the challenging exams. Attendance is mandatory, so be ready to engage.
I wish I had learned more, but the class felt self-taught. The professor had us read slides aloud every session and offered little instruction. The final exam average was 37%. While he passes everyone with a C, it's frustrating to get a grade that doesn't reflect my effort.
Curve came from Mars. 50 point curve.
