Difficult and not lenient.
Taking him for lab. He's pretty okay. Pros: very helpful IF you try. Will often assist in setting up equations (only once refused students who were not present for about half the lab). Cons: not great at explaining concepts. If you take him for lab, be sure to have Dr. Ekanayake for lecture! Still, very helpful and certainly not bad.
He makes you work really hard but he is always available to assist you! The key is to go to him when you need help
If you can study by yourself, then you can take him for chemistry. He has no clue what he taught either for the class and for the lab. In the lab, it was even worst as some students did wrong but he didn't pay attention/help at all and they had to do over and over again. He should prepare for what he is going to teach, lab & class
Lot's of homework and quizzes that don't amount to much of you grade and aren't useful for the tests. Reads off powerpoints in class, and doesn't cover material really well.
At the beginning, I felt lost because I did not understand the basics (which he usually doesn't spend time on in class). When I went to his office to ask questions, he took time to explain everything based on my level of understanding. He was always available for questions
I took intro chem before taking chem 1 so I had a good base going into the class. He's not very good at clarifying complex concepts. He was always available for help, though I didn't ask him much. If you have trouble understanding accents, you'll struggle with him.
If you do the online hw and quizzes it really helps for the tests, which are very easy if you know the material well. Dr. Kayinamura is super nice and really cares about all students succeeding in this course! Occasionally his explanations are not clear, but he is always available in office hours to help clarify concepts. Exam reviews were helpful.
Dr. Kayinamura is super nice and really wants everyone to succeed! He is sometimes hard to understand, but is ALWAYS available to help during office. I was able to figure out anything I was confused with after he explained the concept again during office hours. Take advantage of his exam reviews, complete all hw/online quizzes & go to office hours!
This class is easy. Three out of his four tests were very easy (including the final). He made the third exam a bit more difficult but still relatively easy. Any transient student looking to knock out chem over summer, I recommend taking it with him. Pretty easy A.
Dr. K is an outstanding teacher with great knowledge who has the ability to make chemistry a little easier. If you put forth great effort and really try to seek his help he will set aside his personal time to do so.If you ask for his help and do all of the work you are sure to pass!
Took this class not knowing what I was getting into.Dr. K was extremely helpful volunteering his time beyond the classroom to further explain and help.He is very caring and helpful.Not a class for the lazy, be prepared to study!
Dr. K is an excellent teacher. He commits a significant amount of time to his students. There is a lot of work, but if you do it and use him as a resource, the tests can be easy A's. I highly recommend him.
Too smart for our own good. Kept telling my group we had to turn in work, then told us (when we went to turn things in) that he wasn't collecting it, which is annoying. Not very helpful to many people.
Dr.K is very nice and very caring. He puts his students first and he takes as much time as needed to help them. His chemsteps are very challenging but he is always available to help. Unfortunately, I personally did not have time to seek his help.
I highly recommend Dr. K. He is by far the most helpful college professor I have had. If you complete all of the homework and use him as a resource, there is no reason you shouldn't get an A in his class.
hes really nice and he knows his stuff but he doesnt know how to relate the material to students so its easy to understand. he also wasnt very helpful in lab and he would leave you with more questions than you initially had.
Dr.K is awesome! Probably the best science professor I have had so far. However, if you are taking him, get ready to work.
I really enjoyed Chem 2 with Dr K. It's a challenging class but he's VERY forgiving with his grading. I'm pretty sure every test got curved 15-20 points so if you put in decent effort you'll end up with an A or B. And he adds up to 10 points extra credit on your final grade based on certain factors. Difficult class but Dr. K wants you to pass.
Dr. K is awesome He really cares about his students’ success. If you do not do well on the test, he will call you and ask you how he can help you succeed. I also like his facebook page where students post questions. He always answers every question within minutes even when they are posted after mid-night.

Chemistry and I had never gotten along before taking CHM1025 with Dr.K. He made me feel like he and I were classmates. Dr.K was always available to help me study and to answer my questions. I could not have asked for a better professor!
I first did not like the fact that Dr.K made us work in groups. In the end, I got to know and to learn from my classmates. I also liked his Facebook group where students posted questions and answers. Dr. K was always available to answer questions as soon as they were posted. He is an awesome teacher!
this class was very hard and challenging but Dr.K is willing to help you and will work with you to make sure you get the grade you deserve even if you completely bomb a test
He made a simple intro to chem class into a daunting chem 1 and then some that could have gone horrifically wrong if he hadn't been so brilliantly helpful! I learned a whole lot more than I really needed to but it'll make my next Chem that much easier and Dr. K bent over backward for any student who asked and honestly put forth the effort to pass.
Dr.K is awesome. He makes his students work really hard but he is always available to work with them. I had never had a professor who shows up almost every weekend to help his students catch up even when the college is closed. It wasn't an easy grade but I am proud of my accomplishments in this course.
Six week summer chem 2 class was probably the worst idea of my life. Teacher is very willing to help and makes himself available but holy group work. Have presentations for lecture and labs that must be done. Quizzes daily. Mastering chemistry online quizzes as well as DSC quizzes. Clear your schedule!
Dr. K is one of my favorite teachers for one of my least favorite subjects i wouldn't recommend taking chemistry 2 in a 6 week course but Dr. K is willing to do anything for his students and he truly cares about your success, he may give a lot of work between quizzes, homework and exams but it pays off in the end if you keep up with the class
Dr. Kay, as everyone has pointed out, really does prioritize helping his students. The workload is brutal, but necessary to comprehend the material upon taking his tests. Make sure you go to all study groups! And even though he doesn't like pizza, he may just order you all some! ;) Thanks Dr. Kay! And no more skipping class to go play soccer! haha
He is very willing to help you if you come to him and ask for it, he isn't very good at explaining things in simple terms to understand better, but he does want you to pass, and gives you plenty of opportunities to make it happen even if you don't do so well on the tests. I would recommend taking him for sure!
His take home exam questions are insane, and this is from someone getting 90% on everything else. Do not take his take home exam. He makes so many mistakes in his lectures that you don't know what he's saying. He penalizes people if they can't show up - he won't tell people about extra credit if they can't show up one day. DO NOT TAKE HIM.

Dr.K was a perfect match for me with my crazy work schedule. Whenever I could not make it to the lab I signed up for, he always allowed me to attend other lab sections. He was like a study partner too. He responded to my questions within minutes even after my midnight shift. I'd have dropped the class if he weren't so accommodating.
Don't believe all of the negative reviews on here, the reality is chemistry is not an easy subject. Dr. K is by far THE MOST accessible professor you will ever meet in your college career. Got a question at 2 AM? Post it on his Facebook group and he'll get back to you. He knows his stuff and genuinely wants everyone to pass, not taking him is a sin
Chemistry has always been a challenge for me but Dr. K was always there to help. This course consists of a LOT of work so plan ahead. Dr. K offers several opportunities to help improve your grade. Take advantage of them! He truly wants you to do well and will help you in any way possible.
Worst class I've ever taken and worst teacher his tests are rarely on what he teaches . I have never put in so much work in a class and got so little out of it I feel as if if I took the same class again with a different teacher I would do really well
I had him for both my lab and my lecture (because there wasn't another option) and it has to be the hardest class I have ever taken at Daytona State. His tests are extremely hard (he calls them spicy) and his lectures are all jumbled together and are difficult to understand. I spent over $400 on a tutor for his class. Good luck if you take him.
if you don't have a chem background do not take him. he teaches the class like its just math class. He offers extra credit and points if your team scores higher then you which is nice but that isn't really learning the subject. He is not approachable at all and he acts like he is to good for his students to explain the topics.
Dr.K is the most caring professor I have ever had. He pushes you to the limits but he is fair and rewards hard work. By taking his class, I did not only learn chemistry but learned how to study in general. He clearly knows his stuff and he offers many options to contact him: Facebook, text messages, emails, office etc. I highly recommend him!
Dr. K was easily one of my best teachers. This guy will give you every chance to understand chemistry, you just have to be willing to put hard work in and actually learn the material.
Extremely difficult class. He offers a lot of help but is pretty condescending when you need some deeper explanation and it deters people from asking questions. He assumes everybody has a strong background in chem, yet this is Chem 1. Recommends that you drop the class if you don't have 20+ hours a week to put into studying in order to get an A
This is a tough class with a tough professor! There's stuff on the exams that he doesn't teach. His 1 hr exams are brutal and take-home exams are worse. I would not take this professor again...
DO NOT TAKE. This professor has no respect for students and does not seem to ever know what he's talking about. Test are on subjects he hardly went over. Take someone else if you can't self teach
Dr.K clearly knows how to do chemistry, but is not a good professor. He is extremely condescending, is not clear on his grading, and requires things be done his way even if the textbook specifies other ways to do problems. He does not explain topics and then tests on them. He never misses an occasion to assign brutal group projects either.
Do not listen to haters. Dr.K is the best professor you can have for a tough class like Chemistry. He is very caring and pushes you to be the best student you can be. If you are a student who want to do nothing else except sitting in the classroom, then Dr.K is a wrong professor for you! Highly recommended to students who are dedicated.
Dr.K is not only a great Chemistry teacher, he is also very caring and inspirational as a human being when you look at what he does through his orphanage and school in Africa! He challenges his students to aspire to greater things in life.
Probably the best professor Ive ever had in my college career. He is very witty, charming, makes class fun and easy to understand. He offers students many opportunities to do well. You HAVE to go to class and do the work, but if you do he sets you up for success. Chemistry isnt the friendliest subject, but with him as your instructor you its fun!
Dr. K wants you to pass his class and be prepared for future chem classes. Therefore, he aims his tests make sure you understand the concepts and can do the calculations. The class as a whole was not easy; you will need to study and practice. Tests and lab were the majority of the grade. He used group assignments so we could help each other out.
Dr. K is an amazing professor! Don't get me wrong, if you don't put effort in you won't pass, but if you put your best foot forward he rewards you. He understands students very well, and helped me out as best you could when I injured my dominant hand. If you want to actually learn chemistry, do yourself a favor and take his class!
For an intro to Chem Class I found it to be pretty hard. His chemsteps that he assigns are not up to date at all and were made in 2014. He doesnt give you a study guide for the final and is always unsure on what will be on it and when the class asked him how many questions will be on the exam he replied I dont know. Would NOT reccomend at all.
Gives lots of extra credit but does not tell you about assignments - watch it! Tests are hard and he spends a lot of class "debating" with troublesome students. Would not take again, very frustrating.
This course isnt easy. You need to practice and study a lot. You need to know your basic chemistry, such as stoichiometry, going into this class. He assumes that you know a lot of it. Overall, hes a good professor! He pushes you to your limits to prepare you for future chem classes. Hes changing his class format starting this Fall though!
I am so glad I took this class with Dr Kayanamura. When I took this class, I only wanted a C but he made me work so hard that I ended up getting an A. I feel fully prepared for CHM1046
Chemistry is a tough subject to learn, and I highly recommend taking Dr. K for chemistry. He provides the necessary tools and avenues for practicing chemistry, which is essential if you're actively attempting to learn the subject. He's a fair grader, and is always offering extra help. If you can't pass his class, you just didn't try. MW
Even though chem was hard for me, I still think Dr. K is a great professor. He really knows what hes talking about and theres rarely ever a question that he cant answer. He does give us a lot of opportunities to get a good grade (CHEMsteps, online quizzes, etc) so if you dont pass, you definitely just did not try. Hes also really funny!
Dr. K was overall a very good professor. I had my ups and downs with the subjects but the only problem I had was with the fact his lectures would go ahead of the subjects on the next test and I would forget everything that is on the test because he taught us a bunch of new stuff. His class is very easy to pass though, he gives you a lot of chances!
You will not pass this class. He is a great chemist but a trash instructor he doesnt know how to explain the stuff he teaches. He gives tons of extra credit but you need t just to scrape by so its not really extra. He like to make a few questions worth basically 25 percent of each test. I passed but I have never studied harder for any class.
I had never taken chemistry before and was very nervous about taking his class. I had heard that he really makes you work. This is probably my proudest A and I feel totally prepared for Chem 1. Highly recommend him if you want to learn chemistry. If you want an easy grade, better to look somewhere else.
He tends to go off on a rant and doesn't clearly teach the right notes as he sometimes goes ahead. His work is hard and papers are hard as well. Just focus and read your text and you'll be fine. Many opportunities to pass his class. His accent slightly makes it difficult to understand but it should be bearable. His labs are ehh. Sometimes help.
He's willing to work around his schedule for students and help them with any questions they have from certain topics. However, his grading is on a more harsher side, so it's recommended for students to be very studious when taking his class. There are certain times where he will go off topic, but it doesn't completely distract the class.
Dr K is very hard but fair. He says he purposefully makes the tests hard, yet gives loads of extra credit. I failed two tests, including the final, and still made an A because of the amount of extra credit he gives. He's very helpful outside of class also, his office is open before labs where he will help you if you don't understand something.
Awesome! 1 of the smartest people Ive ever met. He should be leading research for a top grad program. He expects a lot, memorizing etc. But he offers tons of extra credit & created an app for more extra credit. Just a great human being. I studied like never before! I got an A. He doesnt see color or gender, he sees effort. He wants us to do well!
This class made me cry at least twice a day. I studied for 5+ hours a day and did all of the quizzes and still made lower grades than I ever have. His lectures are confusing and even if you understand the concept he reworks the equations so they are harder on the exams and barely what you learned.
I took Dr. K during the COVID crisis. Switching to online, I thought my grade was doomed. Dr. K held online lectures and even posted students notes and his Powerpoints for anyone who missed a lecture. Obviously kids were struggling so he reopened every quiz so that could redo any that we missed. He responds quickly to emails, and has a heart.
Hard class, but if you work hard & do the extra credit you can make an A. Dr K has a heart of gold. If I can offer advice, take Intro to Chem if you didn't come right out of high school Chem. It will save you! He expects that you took it & know all of the intro stuff, people who don't struggle! I took an online prep over the summer, it saved me.
I took the same chem class 10 years ago at a large university and just passed it, so after I finished my masters I wanted to retake chem and actually learn it. Let me say, this class was SIGNIFICANTLY harder than the class I took at the large university and it was harder than my whole MA. But I got an A because hes good. You need to work hard.
I took him online because of coronavirus. The class was kind of a mess, it could've been more organized, but once you get the hang of it you will be fine. He gives a lot of extra credit and will always answer your emails.
This professor knows his stuff, however, he expects us to be at the level he is at. His tests are probably some of the hardest tests I have ever taken. Im an A student but I struggle in this class. His grading is tough he gave me a zero for missing one calculation on a lab assignment. DSC doesnt have good chem professors so pick your poison.
He doesn't teach that much, I took a hybrid class with him and it feels that I am studying on my own. he shows that he cares but he really doesn't. His exams are hard and not all questions are on the material that we are learning. his chemsteps are a good idea but the website is so bad, quizzes stop because there are no enough questions to ask.

Chem is definitely hard but even online, he was so accessible through email, virtual office hours/ tutoring. His class was a mess. He is a very tough professor and thinks that we know much about chemistry. His tests are random and will probably give you a test about something we did not even take yet. Chemistry is hard and he makes it almost impossible to pass.
I have always been terrified by chemistry but he made it bearable. If you are willing to work, he gives you lots of opportunities to do well. He really cares about his students!
Taking this class online wasn't an easy thing to do but Dr.K was always available almost 24/7 for help. He replied to all my emails within minutes. I must say that his in-class exams were a bit rushed but other than that, it was a great class. I'd recommend taking him!

I've taken Dr. Yohani for two semesters. He is a very intelligent man. But he cannot teach. His lectures are mostly spent chastising us because we didnt understand the material or tet 100% on this tests. His tests usually have a multiple choice section and 3 written response. Your test grade will be decided on how well you did the written portion.
Best professor that I have had so far. It wasn't an easy grade but I feel proud of it. I worked hard and learned a lot.
I never thought I could ever pass Chemistry but Dr.K did not just help me pass it. He made me like it enough to think about taking chem1.
This class was the worst class I have ever had. He assigns multiple papers, assignments, and labs then waits till last minute to grade them. His test are extremely tough. He will teach half the material then leave you to be responsible for the rest. I understand chemistry is a tough subject, but there is no reason for the class to be this difficult
Great professor! Dr.K was available for questions almost 24/7. The class is tough but it makes you feel proud of your grade.
Extremely accommodating professor- did everything in his power to make sure everyone passed chem 1 in summer A ! He was a little unorganized but was really easy to get ahold of if there was anything I needed clarification on. tests were fair and he always gave us a practice exam to study for the actual exam!
The material can be hard and he pushes you. But he does everything he can to help you learn and to raise your grade. TONS OF EXTRA CREDIT, you just have to do it! :) Participate, ask for help, and do what he suggests and you will do very well! Very kind, caring, and helpful...you only have to show him you're trying your best! Absolutely recommend!
Previous students and current classmates have complained about his teaching, during the semester he is completely unorganized. He had to change everyone's grade by a whole letter grade for the first exam we did because of how incorrectly he graded the test. he never responded to emails or voicemails when I got covid. worst professor I've ever had.
After some time out of school, I was very nervous about taking Chemistry but Dr.K made it doable and I actually learned something. Highly recommended!
He does not have an area for you to review your grades throughout the semester. His tests do not match his teachings. He teaches the basics, and expects you to understand difficult test questions without examples to practice. You get a packet for extra credit, but you have to cheat to understand it. Also, don't ask for help as he gets irritated.
I never liked Chemistry and was never good at it, but Dr.K made it bearable. Dr.K pushes you to do better and allows you to succeed. His Chemsteps is very helpful. It is a lot of work, but it is worth it!

Dr. K is a great chemistry professor. He has a strong accent which makes learning chem a little harder. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT. DO NOT SKIP. It will save you on exams. Dr. K is great! I was not excited to take chem since I know how hard it can be, but he was a great teacher and very sweet and funny. He really knows what he's taing about. Attendance isn't required but half the information is given through lectures so do yourself a favor and try to go everytime. He's great !!
Classes are over 12/19, and final grade is still not posted. He told my class grades won't be finalized until 12/17 he is late. So unorganized, doesn't care, makes you feel dumb if you ask questions. I'm so disappointed. I know I passed, but I learned way more thru other sources. For our labs he would leave for 20min+ when many had questions.
Professor K is a good professor who will teach you what you need,his tests are very difficult and he will sometimes not grade correctly. Usually you'll need to practice a lot outside of class to get a good grade, and you need to do every test practice. He knows what he's talking about, he is just confusing and will often write the wrong things down
This professor was easily the worst professor I have ever endured for a full semester. He is very disrespectful and very rude to students. The only decent thing about his course is the extra credit given. He is extremely unorganized and does not go through material thoroughly in order to teach it. you will be learning everything on your own at home
Professor will fail you for any incident. I had a flight 3 days prior to the final and he refuses to let me take it early. There's also a group project that final week, also missed it. Final 20% GP 10%. Bad communication, he kept saying "we will see", first class failed. No make ups at all, you will have to do 1500 questions for "extra credit"
To be fair, chem 1 is hard anyway, but its harder when the professor doesn't really know what he's talking about. Various mistakes during practice problems and hard to follow lectures. He did agree to move several exams back a week because the class stressed that we weren't ready. He's a funny guy, and I like him as a person, but not a teacher.
Dr. K was a funny teacher, knew what he was teaching and very passionate about it. HOWEVER, he was NOT considerate about the grade you got, nor the little mistakes you made. If you got a bad grade, you had to keep it pushing and pray for the next exam/ quiz. It was his way or the highway. You need prior knowledge of chem to follow along with him.
This professor was terrible. He is incredibly unorganized, takes forever to grade, and is not accommodating or helpful at all. There were multiple times I would ask him a question and he would talk to me like I was stupid for not knowing. He takes forever to reply to emails and is just all around very harsh. I do not recommend him!
Professor K is a good professor who tries to speak with students and spends time with them to help the students understand the topic. He is a tough grader but in the end is very rewarding. Don't worry if you don't do well on the tests, he will give several opportunities of extra credit.
In-person lectures and labs. 4 exams and a final. No homework, but online practices can be used as extra credit if you accumulate enough points. 1 group research paper, and 1 personal lab research paper. Offered retake exams for those who didn't do well. Can seem strict because he challenges students to learn. Great professor and a great person.
I believe he over complicates many of the topics, and the exams he gives are very very difficult. If you don't come to lectures, you will fail. For the fourth exam and the final, we were allowed a notecard, and there is an extra credit opportunity where if you begin it at the START OF THE CLASS, you can get an extra 10% on your final grade.
