Very talented and brilliant professor! Always willing to help students and is extremely patient. Explains everything clearly and his powerpoints are super helpful and organized. Dr. Tesema really wants you to learn and will do as much as he can to make that happen. No prior chemistry knowledge required, but this class involves lots of math.

Tesema is the most likeable professor I've had at NOVA. His lecture class is split between online and in-class time. He keeps the entire class' power point slides on blackboard from day one, and gives homework in the form of blackboard quizzes and extra credit. That said, it's impossible to keep up with the lectures unless you studied before hand.

He's really nice and easy-going, but I took this class online (huge mistake). He doesn't really give feedback on why he grades exams the way he does, and its hard to learn the material just on your own. But the in-class labs are okay, he's pretty helpful in person. In my humble experience, Professor Yohannes Tesema is an absolutely wonderful professor for highly motivated students he supportively encouraged observation and understanding of chemistry while giving ample space for self-directed learning. I could not have imagined a better person to introduce me to such an ineffably fundamental discipline.

Very understanding and strikingly patient. I genuinely consider him to be a good role model as both a disciple of chemistry AND as a human being. I personally felt that he exceeded even the expectations I had simply for basic instruction, to say nothing of his ease of accessibility outside class and his willingness to help us with the material.

My rate score was due to his novice experience in teaching, where he made mistakes in his practice exams and provided study guides. Upon receiving tutoring, we found that he has incorrect answers as the "right" answer in practice test and incorrect question formats in study guides. Other than that issue, he is a great and passionate individual.

Lectures from powerpoints--notes are thorough & clear. 5 exams; lowest dropped. Exams comprise approx. half of grade. 8-9 labs but he doesn't set lengthy post-lab assignments. Take-home quizzes worth ~15% of grade. Prof Tesema is clever, patient, & kind, probably one of the best teachers at this school. Really like him & the workload was reasonable

Really good professor. PowerPoints on Canvas have all of the material bullet-pointed, and he goes over them in lectures, which helps clear up any confusion. Very kind, patient, and helpful, especially during labs. A lot of the tests focus on using the math from each section, so I'd recommend spending time on that. Hope to take him for CHM 112!

He also gives handouts with the formulas and a summary of each chapter. I would definitely take Professor Tesema again.

I can't believe this professor is highly rated. Something important no one's mentioning: CHM 111 is in English, and his English is abysmal. His pronunciation is so poor, you'll expend as much mental energy disentangling his sentences as you will actually learning. He frustratingly doesn't even attempt to be intelligible: "MleklrDimshenalansisok?"

Have never had a worse professor- Heavy accent makes understanding lectures difficult. The lectures are also incredibly long. Professor spends the majority of the class talking to himself as the majority of students have given up long ago. Everyone is making fun/complaining about his accent, he's understandable. If you pay attention, do your work, you will get an A. If you are getting Cs in his class, that is a problem within.
