Great professor, I highly recommend him!!
One of the best professors I've ever had. He's extremelly helpful. I've never seen him turn someone away even when he was like an hour past his office hours.
He's teacher who knows his material, but doesn't do the best job of conveying that information to the class.
Greqat Professor. You will not get a whole lot of notes out of the class but you will gain an understanding for physics problem solving whihic is what Physics is about. Smart and helped me to overcome my fear of this hard science
He's one of the best prof i've had in years. allowed me to enjoy learning once again. Was great in clarifying the work for the class. Recommend all Hunter students to take his class.
Physics is very hard subject itself but and no matter how badly i hated it i got A-, and honestly even though i was getting bad grades at the begging, it was my fault because i did not read problems carefully, i really understood that subject and love it now
loved him
Great professor.
One of the best professors I've ever had. I really wish Hunter would hire him permanently!!!
HORRIBLE. He could make addition sound difficult.
Excellent teacher. Patient and very nice.
Lectures based more on concepts rather than actual problems. Extremely helpful in office hours. Fair exams. DO ALL THE HOMEWORK. He uses it for exam questions.
Abranyos is a good teacher and if you apply yourself you should do well. Hes very fair person and tries to apply a curve to help you. His practice tests will not help you on his tests. Same concepts but the problems will completely change opposed to previous years of repetitive exams.
Abranyos is a nice professor. Lectures are thorough and from textbook. He knows his stuff. However, I get frustrated about how easy students can cheat (such as going to the "restroom" which is aka going to the library or tutor), or students can look over each other's papers and he wouldn't notice. HWs are very important. Practice exams aren't.
The problems he gave on the exams were somewhat harder than those on the webassign, but more similar to the once on his practice exams. He is very respectful and seems like he loves his students and cares about them. He also knows the subject very well. Impressed by the ease with which he teaches and by his personality.
He is an excellent teacher. Very respectful and helpful. Do the homeworks and practice exams and you will be do just fine.
Awesome awesome awesome..I was somewhat intimidated of physics but he helps out alot! If you have to take physics..take him
Professor Abranyos is very nice and patient, always willing to help his students. Do the questions on the webassign, and you will do well.
His exams are fair, they are mostly from his notes and the webassign homework. He grades the tests very fairly. He won't take off much points for math errors as long as you understand the physics. He has a good personality. The only downside is that he goes very fast (1 chapter per week).
Great professor, exams based on the lecture and webassign. Emphasizes concept. If you want to understand some physics rather than nemorize, take him.
He is one great, easy going, simple and knowledgeable professor. He knows his stuff so well that everything in life is physics; very enjoyable class, easy way to learn physics and apply them in daily life. you can actually learn a lot more other than exam stuffs from him. Take him for sure! (do the HW, come to class and ask questions of coz!)
Just teaches the notes that he already posts on Webassign.
I enjoyed to attend Dr. Abranyos lectures. He is very polite, caring and down to earth person. The course was great; and I think, that even teaching physics is not for everyone, but Dr. Abranyos is great! Register and enjoy your studying!
boring confusing lecture, but extremely helpful classnotes on blackboard, give sample exam that help out on test alot, not much hw/pressure

It is a pleasure to be in his class. One of the smartest and down to earth professor you can have as a professor. He is very polite, respectful and helpful.
He's patient, answers questions very well, and is willing to help anyone. He really seems to care if his students are getting the material or not, and wants everyone to do well...If you have to take physics and he's teaching it, pick him. tests are based off hw, so do it and you're gold.
He is a very nice guy and definitely knows his stuff, but doesn't explain things as clearly as they need to be explained sometimes. I think he gives the students too much credit and doesn't explain things because he assumes we already know the material.
I couldn't understand this man...he's not clear at all and the tests are really really really hard. If you want an easy A do not take this class. His test averages were 18 out of 40 questions...i'm only passing cause of the curve. His tests are so hard that one student said outloud "WE WOULD HAVE FAILED EVEN IF THAT WAS OPEN BOOK"
ok, people don't understand that astronomy is not the class to take for an easy science general ed requirement. it takes a lot of reading and memorizing, and try to do it at the last min and .. heh. there's something wrong with you if you couldn't pass the test with an open book. straight up, take the class if you mean to keep up with the readings.
he is really very intelligent. at the beggining you are not going to understand anything. but if you read the book and if you have some physics background u'll be ok. don't pretend to get all the answers on his test. some of them are tricky. but if you get 32/40 you will get an A. and at the end he curves the grades so you'll be fine.
Very obscure details on exams. Entire grade based on only three exams and one final. No HW, no quiz, no attendance taken. Must study very hard to get an A. He gets some facts wrong. ex: In class he taught that the coriolis effect makes toilets flow backwards south of equator. Textbook says not true. This question appeared on final. Rewarding class.
3 exams, lowest dropped. 1 final. the tests are curved. sample exams/powerpoint lectures on website/blackbrd. 50 q's on the final are RECYCLED. questions are mostly def based, very little math. 40 q's cover 5 ch.'s, you have to know EVERYTHING for an A. but theres an INSANE curve. class is def. not as hard as it could be, but definitely not breezy.
Don't know about his other courses, but you won't be sorry you took his Astro 100! Knows his material, very helpful with questions, no HW, 3 tests, he drops the lowest, final exam with most questions from previous tests. And if you attend all his lectures, you'll pass tests even without reading the book.
This man is a genius
I wouldn't say this class is an easy A, but its definetly possible. Thought I am among the others who carry conversations in the back, I am still aware of just how smart this guy is. Pay attention and read the notes and do the pratice exams, and you'll be okay.
Ok, he's a genius, but it's impossible to learn in the lecture hall with students in their own conversations, it's hard enough to follow his accent. We had at least 5 MAJOR astro events this term and never mentioned one in class, as if he missed the Lunar Eclipse? It's a shame, they would have made the topic more accessable or interesting at leas
Squeezed by with a C+. Yes, he is cute and smart! Really hard to follow along in class with the noise level, his accent, complicated, brand new ideas and a fast pace. Not an easy way to fill the requirement.
He is a great prof! Explains everything very clearly. If you attend class and put some effort into it you will get alot out of this class (not to mention an A). I find him very helpful! He's also HOT!
smart, generous and hot!!
He is soooo good looking! lol Besides that my advice is to read and summarize on your own the textbook and then listen to his lectures, that's how I got an 41 out of 40 on his midterm. His class is not difficult but it requires work.
Smart guy, but its difficult to get a good grade on exams.Amazing curves!! That's how I passed!! 3 midterms and a final, lowest midterm dropped. Midterms are 60% and final's 40%. He's not the worst, just a little difficult to understand sometimes. All notes are online all the time. 50/80 Qs on the final were recycled.

boring class...bou 10% of students go to regualar class. class was a waste of time.especially in the assembly hall
This class is challenging because every exam has about 5 chapters. Furthermore, there are a great amount of details one has to remember. However, if you try to at least fully understand the bigger concepts and study the sample questions you should come out with a decent grade. For the final memorize all the sample exams and prior mid-terms.
Branyos is awesome! I had him for Astronomy. Difficult jamaican accent to understand, but a rlly nice guy. Text book is rlly helpful(and fun!), but study the questions online in the link he gives you. 60% his questions ARE THERE ON THE TEST! xD Its a really easy class to get an A in if you study well and go to class (he will give tips!) Good luck!
Got by without attending most of his lectures. Just studied his notes on blackboard. 3 Midterms and 1 final. Lowest midterm grade dropped. Tests are curved and the final consisted of questions from the previous midterms. It will be hell if you don't study at all. Fairly difficult and tricky questions.
this class is soooo fun! He really knows his stuff and it's really interesting~ His tests are hard and tricky but if you study the textbook u'll be fine. He curves allll the tests...so if you got a C on a test...you'll actually get a B when he curves! he is soo awesome!!
I am really enjoying the class. Professor Abranyos is terrific. He explains difficult concept nicely. The exams are FAIR and based completely on the material covered. I read the assigned reading and attended the lectures, and with regular studying I got A on both exams. However, if you don't study you will be in big trouble.
He has a hard to understand accent which is worse when he uses a microphone to echo it. 3 midterms (lowest one is dropped) and a final. His curves are generous; my friend got 50% on a test and still got a C.
possibly the worse professor at hunter. Class is extremely difficult especially since its an INTROOOO course. His tests are in regents form and he tries to trick you instead of just testing you on the material. He has this thick carribean accent which is worse over the mic. Guy is clueless!!! Also looks just like Will.I.Am from black eye peas.
You don't really have to go to do well as long as you keep up with the reading, but I did better on the exams when I attended the lectures. His curve is very generous and he explains concepts well. The accent wasn't as bad as I expected and he's really good-looking so that's another incentive to go to lecture! An easy A if you do your work. Enjoy!
I was bored to DEATH in this class. He completely killed the small interest I had in astronomy. His accent is difficult to comprehend, and the exams are ridiculously difficult for an intro course. Thankfully he curves all exams as well as your final grade, so I managed to pass -- even though I failed EVERY exam, as well as the final, haha.
Terrible is not even a strong enough word.. being in his class u have to multi-task! you have to be able to DECIPHER his accent, take notes, and try to stay awake all at once..I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT..If i had known this i would have never taken this class.
He seems like a nice enough guy, but by far one of the worst professors I've had at hunter. It's true, even if you get past the accent he STILL makes no sense. Tests are very tricky and cover things not in the review. No one goes to class and the people that do are usually sleeping.
It's unfortunate that he is the only professor that teaches astro 100 because so many people need to take it for their lab science requirement. you have to learn everything on your own because this guy's lectures are beyond boring.
I found the class very interesting, and Prof. Abranyos very stimulating and extremely smart. When I read some of the ratings , my first thought was are these students really taking the course. Many students in the class are looking for a free pass and don't want to work hard (are lazy). Lectures are very clear and concise and exams very fair.
Well it is not a class for slackers. Well organized and clear explanations. Some problem with audio due to the size of the hall. The trick is to be on top of things early. Oh,final 40% old questions and generous curve. Easy A if work a bit hard.
I gave up on showing up to this course halfway throughout the semester. It's hard to understand him & it's boring as hell. He only bases his grading on tests. The textbook really should be your best friend for the semester if you want to pass this class.
This class was okay. Really easy, he posts every single slide he uses on BB which is almost all you need. If you skim through the text with your notes you'll definitely get an A. He has 3 tests and drops the lowest as well as a mandatory accumulative final which isn't that bad.
There is no "class" here. The text book publisher produced powerpoint slides and those are used in the lectures. There is NO REASON this should be a class in a lecture hall - it should be an online class and could be taught by a web site. There is no TEACHING involved, it's just powerpoint slides and a textbook.
Do not be misguided by the "good" ratings for this professor. Although he is quite knowledgeable of the material and on a personal level he is a very nice guy his class is RIDICULOUSLY difficult and his thick accent makes his lectures almost incomprehensible. This is suppose to be an introductory course, mostly for people who need to fulfill GER re
My friend had to study for 5 hours to achieve a grade of a B. Friendly guy but teaching is terrible. Do not take the class unless you're willing to give up 5 hours every night for studying.
He's okay, but his accent makes it hard for me to understand him. All his notes are on BB, so there's no need to attend. But he has this attendance sheet given out in class, at the beginning of the semester which later on stops. Gives 3 tests, drops the lowest grades, curve your grades, too, but you have to study from textbook and the website.
Definitely a very interesting course. Prof. Abranyos is extremely knowledgeable and helpful instructor. The course is very structured and materials are presented clearly. It is a very easy course to pass, but if you want to get an A need to work a bit harder. Lowest of 3 midterms dropped and final curved generously.
for me it wasnt so much his teaching style or accent which got to me, but simply how tedious it was to sit in the room for x amount of time. its probably why i never attended class except for exam days... i just read the textbook before every exam n ended up gettin an A-
I did not buy, nor once did I open, the textbook for this class and passed it with a good grade. The lecture notes are powerpoint slides that are put together by the people who wrote the textbook; he just reads the slides during lecture. The class was extremely BORING! Attendance was useless. On the upside, he grades on a very generous curve.
He knows a lot but he isn't a good teacher. No point coming to class. He doesn't do anything but read power point slides.
He seems like a great person, but his accent is very thick and hard to understand in that huge lecture hall! Midway through the semester, people stopped coming. His powerpoint slides weren't very helpful. Avoid this class if possible!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Hes a nice guy, but you can't understand a word he says. Unless you plan on becoming an astronomer, find another class to fulfill a GER.
Great professor!
class sucked..which is why I hardly went.. this guy is definitely living the kush life
He definitely knows his material but all he really does is read off slides and picks out certain points to discuss for almost the whole class time. The assignments he assigns online are a bit time consuming and long, but are helpful for the exams. He also provides a VERY generous curve.
If you are good at learning on your own , take the class! However its pointless to attend. He has a low voice and thick accent so you cant understand his lectures. The tests are all multiple choice however, so its a little easier! but you have to put in extra work and read the textbook thoroughly to pass
Very nice man; however, has a really thick accent to the point where he is almost incomprehensible. Teaches based off of slides. On the bright side, he posts lecture notes on blackboard and is very generous in terms of curves as the person below stated. Take him if you have a good self-study ethic.
The lectures aren't mandatory to attend, unless you really need it. If you do the homework and the readings, you should do fairly well.
Very nice guy, but a very thick accent! He knows his stuff- But its useless to attend his class if you're sleeping throughout the whole thing. However, he does post things on blackboard which you should follow. And if you buy the textbook online- You should take the sample quizzes and homework because he includes most of them on his tests/midterms
I ended up taking an Incomplete for his class because I simply wasn't motivated to go anymore. He's pretty much impossible to understand and what he does teach is always insignificant to the exams. Do NOT take him if you're taking astronomy as an elective.
Is a knowledgeable man, but has a low voice. Half the class was asleep every day. The fact that he doesn't take attendance made me unmotivated to go to his class, but still dragged myself. You have to study a lot on your own. Also, he couldn't explain our some of our problems properly.
This Prof was is one of the best science profs at hunter. Very easy going and funny guy. He answers all your questions in and out of class was very nice and respectful to all his students even when they were goofing off. Its science pple, so do your work! I'd take him again if i could!
Very boring, he goes straight through the textbook. There was NO NEED to go to class if you were going to actually read the textbook. On a plus note he is a avid user of BB and posted all slides, so if you didn't read the text you could view the slides.
I noticed many pple in the class werent into science so thats probably the reason pple were slacking off big time. Ive taken many science profs and he is the BEST hands down!!! unbelievably humble and fair..read txt and go to class youll get A+
This Prof., is very bright; but you have to do the readings to really appreciate the "cosmos." He has some fun moments, but this is a Science class for people like me, who are not scientist or interested. It is a requirement at Hunter College. I like this guy, he appears very fair and if you are NOT A LAZY student, you will appreciate him.
Nice professor. However, the class is a waste of time. The material is a joke, I felt as if I was in a remedial class, but I suppose that's why it's for non-science majors. Weekly HWs + Labs that are EXTREMELY ANNOYING AND TEDIOUS. Class is a mess, all the lab instructors don't know what's going on. WebAssign is 100$ + Book. Class is waste of time.
Prof is very nice, he gives 3 midterms and drops the lowest grade 42 MC questions each. The final is cumulative which is not the greatest its 82 MC questions. You get online HW every week and you have to pay to access the hw. Most of the labs can be done online you have to attend 3 in classroom labs. I got a B needed to study more for A. Boring.
He is just reading out the pdf files made by Pearson Education. Also, hard to understand the subjects due to his oral skills. You will get to know what you need to study AFTER the exam, not before the exam. Also, grading system is bad and inaccurate because there are too many lab instructors. Take other section, if possible.
Attendance non-mandatory, although 3 mandatory classroom labs. Other labs are online. Tests are pretty hard, and lots of memorization. But Professor Abranyos DOES want to help you pass. Pretty easy class for a the 2E science requirement.
Super nice guy... EXTREMELY hard tests. The Final (40% of your total grade) was the hardest test I have ever taken. You need to study, read, and get the concept not just memorize. He reads slides only. HW online. You need to explore the online coarse a lot- test questions are based on quirky stuff. NOT AN EASY CLASS BY ANY MEANS.
This professor has serious accent problem, but he's willing to help you out. His exams are EXTREMELY HARD. However, you will be fine if you do good his online quizzes/labs. Also you have to go to classroom labs/computer labs in order to boost your grade up! (this will help mostly). Attendance non-mandatory.
Really heavy accent. In class, your brain is both processing the new material and translating what he says into understandable English. Gives me a headache after a certain point.
Take at your own risk! There's just so much material to cover and the man's accent doesn't help the cause,. Whatever interest you have in Astronomy may potentially DIE from this course. Study on your own which is why no one came to class. Homeworks are long but doable. Tests are curved. Overall, this course gave me a migraine.
Not sure why his rating is so low but this class is literally a free A+. Homework is trivial because you can find the answers online if you search, class attendance isn't mandatory, he posts all slides, tests are pretty much straight from the slides with a couple small changes. Small amount of effort for a big return; TAKE HIS CLASS.
Nice Professor, easy going, is clearly excited about Physics which I liked a lot.
Hilarious guy who slips in really funny jokes into class work. You're not going to catch the jokes if you're daydreaming, or getting over last night's hangover. The absolute best, funny and reasonable professor I've had yet. He's easy to understand, and he makes an effort to help each student, even if most are slackers in the class. A class act.
He's a good prof. He tries to actually teach physics. Not too hard to understand if you study everyday. Curve was pretty good.
He is a good professor. Takes a lot of question during class. But outside of class time, he was standoffish and inaccessible. Also one bad thing about this prof. is that when you ask questions, he either talks over you, assumes he knows what your asking and answers in a way what he thinks your asking. As usual, study on your own.
If you do your online assignments, you will be fine. The professor is very generous with the curve though he can make the class laugh if you ask him a question during lecture
Interesting lectures because he's very passionate about the topics taught. However, you don't have to go to class to do well. You can teach yourself from the textbook and youtube. Practice problems from the textbook until you understand how to approach and solve problems. He provides PDF summaries of chapters which are great for reviewing.
Abranyos is probably the best physics teacher at Hunter, and that's not saying much. Lecture is not useful, homework and practice problems are much more useful for tests and quizzes. If class average is low expect a generous curve and extra credit. Tests are pretty stressful and difficult and make up most of the grade. Still, he is the best choice.
He is not clear with what he wants and gives difficult exam for no reason.
If you are taking him the summer, BE WARNED. He is very intense. He covered 12 chapters in 6 weeks, and the very last subject which he taught the day b4 was 1/5 of the final, so he expects you teach urself knowledgeable guy, does his best to explain physics in a way that makes sense with demonstrations / examples. Had to work hard, but I liked him.
Physics is hard and we all know that. Prof. Abranyos definitely made it easier for us to succeed during this pandemic. He uploads lecture notes that are somewhat similar to the quizzes/exams. Just study and put in the effort! Don't procrastinate your studying.
Before the pandemic there were supposed to be three tests, and we had taken one before classes moved online. Once we moved online, Professor Abranyos was very understanding and made it easier to do better in this class. That being said, physics is a very hard class, make sure to be on top of the material and you should do well with this professor.
during the pandemic he was definitely very considerate towards grading. it was supposed to be three tests but switched to a quiz every week. physics is very hard and at the pace it is taught it is very difficult to understand what is going on before moving on, but i think he is one of the better physics profs at hunter
Bad stuffs: 1. Gives hard exams: you have no know every bit of information about the concepts. 2. Unprofessional: posts no announcements, not accessible when having problems 3. Homework chase you down: it's all over the place on the Pearson website. Good stuffs: 1. Drops one exam 2. "Curve" grades
No doubt one of the most caring, respected and helpful Professors at Hunter. I would absolutely recommend. Know the book and do the problems at the end of the chapters. Lots of self learning . Stay away from TAN LEE for Lab since she has no Rate my Professor page. She is the roughest grader I have ever had and hard to understand.
Exams are ridiculously hard, decided not to curve meanwhile 75% of the class was in the 80 and below range. Hard to reach since he doesn't answer emails.
Was very lenient during the pandemic. We had quizzes instead of exams every week and they were not too bad. He gives lecture notes so just study those & do the online hw and you should be good to go. He is caring and wants his students to succeed. Just put in the work and you'll get an A.
Absolutely the worst professor ive ever had in my entire life. If your gpa matters to you, dont even think about taking this class. If u just want to get an easy C than take him. Personally id rather slowly chop off all 10 of my fingers with a disease ridden knife than have to take a class with him again. AVOID AT ALL COST!!!
Pop quizzes/exams during a pandemic????? Whose bright idea was this..... And also he does not allow you to back track meaning you cannot review your work/answers before submitting the test. This makes no sense. His lectures and the homeworks do not reflect the exams whatsoever.
If you struggle with physics, read the book and do the homework before class, and practice the problems at the end of each chapter. Or you can simply quit everything and dedicate your waking hours to his class. Other than that his lack of empathy and being a tough grader give me anxiety at the thought of having to take him again.
This guy is just one of the worst professors out there. You can do all the homework and labs and fail, class averages are horrible. This guy should not work in teaching
I dont have many good things to say about Prof. Abranyos other than that he clearly has a love for physics. This does not translate to teaching ability. He is unresponsive to emails, unclear in lectures, and gives extremely hard assessments. But from what Ive heard, there arent many better options out there.
Best physics professor at Hunter
He will not teach you, only pretend to. He doesn't check emails nor answer questions without fluff. The tests do not reflect the material and the class averages of 30-40 on every exam is proof of it. He fell behind on the material and does not do reviews before exams. BSing is his specialty, truly an embarrassment. I wish I switched while I couldve
Pay attention to his lessons. Exams mostly reflects his lecture not homework. The hw is practice, those won't reflect on the exam. Also, this professor provides his lecture notes in pdfs. These notes are very easy to understand and the example question in those come up in exams. He sometimes does pop quiz so probably better to not miss class.
Professor Abranyos makes the concepts easy to grasp by explaining them from the bottom up. The lectures are amazing for that reason. Unlike other physics professors, he gives practice problems before the exams, and also puts extra problems on his exams that count for extra points. Tremendous curve at the end! Highly recommend.
Professor Abranyos has some pros and cons. Pro 1: Great lectures - very few people attended because it was late at night, but don't make this mistake. His passion-filled lectures are extremely complementary to the somewhat vague textbook. Pro 2: Amazing curve. Con: Responds only to some emails - you need to go to his office hours for questions.
Really nice guy and gave good lectures that were also done live on Blackboard, but his tests were pretty difficult and gave pop quizzes once a week which were tedious. Overall a pretty good experience with him but make sure to study hard for the exams since the averages were always low. Still gave a really good curve at the end though.
We used a Pearson book, if you have both LAB and Lecture, you don't have to buy the book twice. The professor is very nice and funny, though he doesn't always catch your question. We had 4 specific days we couldn't miss at all without tanking our grade. There's lots to do but he's more than happy to help. He doesn't mind theoretical questions.
didnt understand a word this man said (I just don't get physics)
ASTRO 10000 covers advanced topics, not basic concepts. Google Slides are insufficient; lectures are fast-paced and heavy on terminology. Grades depend on midterms, finals, and challenging homework, with the option to drop the lowest midterm. Expect closed-book exams. Understanding concepts is vital for success, as memorization alone isn't enough.
Reviews for tests that he gives out don't help, he'll incentivize you to come to class by giving password required pop quizzes, meaning you have to show up no matter how ridiculous the time is, and the online software used for homework assignments is incredibly unengaging, and is associated with a reading that you never end up doing.
Professor Abranyos' lectures are great for grasping the concepts. He provides lecture notes and practice problems that are very helpful for exam prep. Unstuck study was a useful study tool alongside the textbook and class materials. The workload is manageable if you stay engaged.
While he seems nice enough, you cannot understand a single thing he says unless you yourself are familiar with the accent. Growing up in an immigrant household I thought I'd be fine but I could barely follow along in lecture due to his impossible pronunciations. Very test heavy and reviews rarely reflected on what was actually needed for the test.
Study guide and extra credit weren't really given out to the students self study for exams were difficult to understand
He's a very kind person and seems to care a lot about astronomy, the class however was very test heavy so just be prepared and quite a load of homework on Pearson.
80% of your final grade is based on 3 exams. 40% of your final grade is the final. Beware. This class is not for the weak. It's called “Basic Concepts in Astronomy” but there is NOTHING basic about these concepts. Very lecture heavy and slide heavy. Very hard to understand.
Genuinely one of the worst classes I've taken at hunter in my entire life. I'd rather burn myself to a crisp than ever see this man again. He does not care if you fail, shown by the multiple times people asked for help and he failed to give it. He barely knows what's going on, seeming confused by the content he put on his OWN tests. stay away
