She is a very helpful professor and very organized. She doesn't have a very bad accent at all. She elplained things in class very well and teh test aren't too hard. The final was kinda hard but it was the final, and if you do the weekly homeworks and do well on the quizes you'll do fine. She isn't bad looking which kinda made me pay attention more.
Overall does a really good job teaching the required material. Goes over many examples in class that are easy to understand and yet challenging. Exams are not difficult but if you don't study then expect a grade that reflects that. Not hard to understand despite English being her second language.
She was awful. She didn't explain what the theories or formulas were for or what the variables meant. She did a poor job of making content clear and never seemed sure if what she was saying was correct. When asked a question she would simply restart an example instead of explaining what she was doing. Definitely not recommended
Very down-to-business, keeps class focused and on-track, energetic. Calculus is a huge topic, no teacher can explain every proof and method in the time given. Does a great job imparting what you need, and gives suitable tests. Has high expectations of what a solid calculus student should master...expect a challenge.
Although I am taking her for Differential Equations, I also took her Calc 2 and 4 class as well. Overall I think she is a great teacher as long as you show up to class and take notes everything will be straight forward. The only negative is her tests are long for the time you have. Prepare for difficult test questions but gives a decent curve.
She taught the material really well and her quizzes werent too hard, but her exams and online quizzes were ridiculously hard. I think she tried to fail everyone. Ive gotten in A in every calculus and got a B- in this
Jien is a good teacher. Her teaching style is very dry and boring, however, she provides you with all of the resources you need for her tests. Her quizzes are very straight forward, and her tests do not have any surprises. The only complaints I have for her is that her tests were excessively long and hard to score well on due to their length
Prof. Jien wasn't horrible but wasn't amazing either. Grades consist of weekly homeworks (usually around 16 questions), weekly in class and out of class quizzes, 2 midterms and a final. The final is very easy. However, its easy to do bad if you screw up on a midterm. She had a 1 point curve at the end of the class.
She's nice & helped me outside of class. The first 2 exams are extremely difficult & take the hardest ?s from each section in the book. Her online tests & quizzes (given once a week) are only 2 ?s & are fairly easy. The final was easy, straight forward, & used similar ?s from the 1st 2 exams. Work hard, do the suggested problems, & you'll be fine
Consists of weekly quizes which are fairly easy. online tests which are easy. Two midterms that are fairly difficult but the final was straight forward and easy. I would recommend this teacher.
Grades consist of weekly online and in class quizzes and homeworks. Online quizzes gave you two tries and in one homework and in class quiz were dropped. Exams were difficult unless you really knew the material well, so study those higher level book problems. She was very thorough in her explanations through proofs and theorems.
great professor
Excellent professor. Exams are tough if you do not study. I missed about 2 weeks of class because I just could not wake up so I had to work extremely hard to catch up and get an A on the 2nd exam. Well worth the effort because she motivates you to succeed. Tough class, don't get me wrong, but very manageable if you but forth the effort.
I absolutely hated her teaching style. She moves on to new material without clarifying even if the class expresses confusion. Many times in class I'd hear students complain about being confused and/or lost. I had to retake this course along with some of my classmates. I'd recommend Vita Borovyk, she's really approachable and helpful.
She uses an overhead projector to display a pad of paper where she just copies notes on to from another pad. Terrible at answering students questions, presents the easiest forms of questions and tests you on forms you have never seen before. Class avg on tests were around 45%. Avoid this prof.
She was always confused, not very helpful, could not understand her at times. Awful class
I have no idea how anyone could think that she is an "easy" professor. Gives WAY too much homework, test questions are somewhat difficult and are graded very harshly. However, it's not all bad--she explains concepts pretty well, and is more than willing to help outside of class.
very good teacher. the exam is really based on notes, homework, quiz, and review class.
I feel as though the professor really knew material. Unfortunately she is incredibly quiet to the point where she is difficult to hear from the very front row... With her heavy foreign accent, she is nearly incomprehensible. Her tests and quizzes follow her verbal lectures which you can't hear. Not okay.
Cannot understand her with heavy accent and is quiet. Writes her notes on the board. She confuses not only the whole class, but also herself and redoes problems several times and sometimes even gives up. Does not answer students questions. Exams/quizzes and homework given every week its very hard. dont take this class!
Never can understand her. She writes something on the board then says something different out loud. Quizzes and tests are difficult. She gives no curve. Avoid this professor
worst teacher in the history of math teachers. dont take the class. cant teach cant help cant understand her
Bad English speaking. You never know what is it. Although exams based on notes, it's really hard and weired for me as good-math asian guys. no good to take.
Bad English speaking. You never know what is it. Although exams based on notes, it's really hard and weired for me as good-math asian guys. no * good to take.
She explains concepts and homework questions clearly in the class. She also provides online quizzes to practice what she teaches in class. If you want to get a good score, do all what she offers and ask questions. She is willing to help her students.
The worst class I have ever taken in my life. I feel like she goes out of the way to make things more difficult and she is terrible at explaining things. the material covered is SO difficult and she takes a lot of time to explain it in a confusing way. She also is very inconsistent in when she says homework is due so i have missed homework before
She may be the worst teacher ever. She does not even address or acknowledge students before, during, or after class. She confuses the students along with herself. Her tests are so hard. What she teaches or attempts to teach is not even close to whats on the test. Her accent is almost impossible to get past. Very broken english. terrible do not take
Very hard class. Test are awful and the class is no fun. She confuses the class and herself and doesn't know much about business. I would very much recommend a different teacher.
Worst teacher ever. You can't understand what she is saying and she tries to make you do bad. She doesn't help you at all and everyone in the class just gets confused when she talks.
She is very unclear with her lectures and often waves off students when they try to ask questions in class. Exams are tricky and not always based off of class material. Avoid if possible
All around awful class. Jien is pretty much Hitler in second life. Very unclear and makes topics very confusing. Exams are extremely tough and she is extremely picky on grading. I went and disputed CORRECT answers on exams and didn't receive a single point back. "Her way or the highway". Not even worth the 5 credit hours. Avoid at all costs.
This professor is awful. She doesn't explain things clearly at all and often teaches a simple formula as if it's the hardest thing you will ever learn. She is very inconsistent on her grading and on her tests questions are worth a ton of points... multiple choice questions worth 4 points and 4 part questions worth 12 points. AVOID
This was a very tough class and you had to work really hard to pass. I am a very good student and this class was my biggest struggle. She is perceived as mean and scary, but once you give her a chance and get past her accent, she is actually not a bad teacher. Work through this class and study a lot.
I took AP Calc in high school, so I came in knowing most of the material. With that being said, I'm not so sure I would've been as successful given her teaching style. She basically stands at the front of a classroom for an hour writing down problems and equations off of her legal pad. And don't bother asking her a question, she can't help you.
Overall Dr. Jien is a great professor. She explains the concepts pretty thoroughly and goes over plenty of examples in class. If you pay attention and put in enough work outside of class you will do fine. Go to class unless you are confident you can teach yourself the material.
It's going to sound bad, but her English is pretty bad. It makes a difficult new concept that much harder. In addition to that, she often has a poor or incorrect way of explaining things. Find someone who has already taken the class.
She is a very nice lady don't get me wrong. However, she is very difficult to understand and if you have a question you might as well save it to ask somebody in the class for help because she won't be able to.
There are expectations to learn all TI-84 calculator info outside of class. Quizzes almost every Tuesday. Information is taught without refreshment on other concepts (expected to know). If you aren't refreshed on previous math concepts expect to pretty much take another math course by going to SRS because she is difficult to understand.
Absolutely horrible. Don't know how she got a job as a professor. I've had MANY poor math teachers but she is by far the worst. The material is already hard enough as it is, but on top of that she has a THICK accent. You can barely understand what she's saying half the time so get ready to comprehend close to nothing. You probably won't pass.
Jien took over multi-variable midway through the semester, in which I (along with all of our other classmates) was succeeding, learning, and enjoying the course thanks to the original professor. Jien is nice, but awful as a professor. Thick accent, cannot convey information, cannot help when confused, and brought the class avg crumbling down. Avoid
Not very approachable. Hard material. 4 tests makeup 5/8 of your grade. Hardest class i've taken thus far in college
Professor Jiens English is not good, but she is still a good professor. I can do my work by myself. And the assignments are not too many.
Get ready to teach yourself everything on your own. When you ask a question, she gets really mad and tries to make you out to look or feel dumb. You will have a quiz every week, multiple exams, a couple hw assignments that will take you longer than the exams, and preclass quiz every class. She does not lecture, you teach yourself. (Applied Calc 1)
Quiz once a week. Long HW assignments (that tell you that you got the answer wrong and not give you the actual answer or correct way to do it). The only thing you do in class is 1 practice sheet. You 90% teach yourself. 4 exams that are at night (2 hrs long). Barely helps even when asked. Don't disregard the warnings on here like I did.
She cares, but is hard to understand at times and makes a few mistakes that require you to pay attention
She does not seem to enjoy being there at all, and she really does not enjoy being asked questions about math.
Dr. J might be the most demeaning teacher I've ever had. When anyone would ask her a question, which is what she should expect because it was a flipped classroom, she would go on a rant saying that you need to pay more attention. This is particularly hard to do when she does not teach a lick in class. Only passed the class because of Khan Academy.
Hardest marker I have ever had. Ex $10 vs 10 dollars will mark you wrong for not writing it. 0.39999 vs .4 with no direction of how many decimal points to put will take marks off you. Does not teach, just reads her notes out loud. Does not even show you how to use the calc. Tells you to google it. My classmate is the only reason I passed & SRS
Assignments would take me days to finish because nothing taught related to the homework. If you asked questions she would get angry with you and barely answer what you asked. If you need more one-on-one time with a professor, do not take. Get ready to teach yourself.
This is more like a flipped class, which I REALLY enjoyed. We are given worksheets and do tons of problems in class, instead of a lecture, but Dr. J still takes the time to explain what we are doing. There are also daily participation quizzes and weekly quizzes which both help to ingrain the knowledge in your head. Overall love Dr J!
Great teacher! Explains everything well! Lots of work, but she explains everything well. I have left this class multiple times having actually learned!!!
Doesn't seem to care about students' success.
This professor is one of the worst I ever had. I was treated unfairly and when I tried to reason with her, she would stop responding to my emails. Basically any failure you have in this class is blamed on you and not her fault at all. Also terrible at transitioning to online classes and teaching, no effort in teaching students.
Avoid that professor. Disrespectful
Terrible Professor.
At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, UC went fully online for it's classes. Professor Jien then posted a video stating that she would not be running online lectures--instead, weekly videos would be posted for calculus tutorials on YouTube from a random non-UC prof. Never saw her again for the rest of the semester. Horrible experience.
This class is hard but this professor made it even harder. I had this class during COVID and this professor had no lectures, just some semi-related YouTube videos to teach students. If you go to office hours to get help she Is very unclear and might accuse you of trying to get answers out of her. This course is passable, if you can teach yourself.
Professor Jien gives you the bare minimum. The lectures are a short introduction to the topic. From there the homework and quizzes are an extension of the lecture, so you pretty much teach yourself. When you ask her a question she'll most likely answer with "use the formula." Wouldn't recommend her if you don't like broad instructions/ feedback.
Don't take her class if you don't have a background in calc. You learn about 2-3 sections per week. Videos for every section covered by an old UC prof. Post video quizzes are easy 100s to check for understanding. HW assignments for every section. About 2 quizzes per week that are slightly harder than PVQs. Office hours every day with her or TAs.
I had this professor during Covid and she made this time even more stressful. I spent about 15-20 hours a week on just this class. All that is provided to teach you are short YouTube videos from a random professor. When the students told her we are struggling and need more help we are told to read the textbook. She will ignore you if she disagrees!
Prof Jien didn't teach the class at all. We were taught through YouTube videos from another professor & often the quizzes didn't seem to be covered in the videos. Jien seemed to be bothered by students when we asked questions & was not helpful & it often seemed as if the student was being blamed for needing help. I didn't get what I paid for. AVOID
Rip off. Prof. Jien did not teach, lecture was YouTube videos from a former professor. Jien was not approachable at all. Any questions were met with rude, condescending, & short replies. Quiz material didn't match videos. Jien did not care about our success at all. After paying a lot of money to go to college I feel like I have been scammed here.
Never actually taught us, only used YouTube videos by some other math teacher. Did not offer much help when contacted with questions outside of class. Occasionally added 20 point quizzes with little to no notification which were due by the end of the day.
Avoid this Prof. She doesn't care about you. Her lectures are nothing like what is on the quizzes or homework. Never grades anything. Is no help when you have questions
WORST professor ever. Doesnt teach ANYTHING. Just sits behind her keyboard uploading other peoples videos and doesnt email back half the time.
If I were to say this is the worst professor/teach I have ever had, it would be an understatement. Our lectures were YouTube videos that she linked from another professor. We had weekly Post Video Quizzes, Homework's, and Exit quizzes all in which were mostly unrelated to the videos. She offered no help and often responded vert rudely to questions.
While this teacher did try their best by having 2 days of office hours and a 2 hour OPTIONAL class to review content, they were not the best teacher. They have a difficult time explaining difficult math theory and for a math class that revolves around writing good proofs, it ruined myself and so many other's grades. Try to learn from someone else.
This is by far the worst professor at the University of Cincinnati, save yourself and pick a different math professor.
Not approachable at all. Calls math problems easy, as if to make people feel bad for not knowing them, even though she literally has no idea how hard a calc problem may be to those new to the subject. Condescending in that regard. Not approachable at all. Literally her entire class is only her doing math problems. Waste of an hour/day, DO NOT TAKE.
This professor is impossible. She doesnt upload anything ever on time and when she does 2 weeks late she is almost angry at you for calling her out. she constantly goes over the class time which can be difficult if you have classes back to back. she is also just inaccessible, she will never help you, you have to go to a TA. Worst professor ever.
despite what others might say, I think this teacher is absolutely fabulous. The content of the class is really tough of course cuz its Calc but Dr. Jien has been one of the more caring and sympathetic professors that I have had. She's willing to help and is great one on one especially. She wants to help you outside of class is you give it a chance.
Perhaps the worst professor I've ever had. Two main problems: 1) explains how to do math by going from one equation to the next without explaining why at each step. 2) Grades only half your test question by hand. The other half get no partial credit, even if only tiny calculation errors. Might be better in person vs. online.
This professor does not teach the class whatsoever. She posts videos of A DIFFERENT EDUCATOR with no credit to them and has it as our teaching material. Ridiculous way of testing us is making us learn a new subject while testing us on an old subject. 100% avoid this professor or this institution all together.
I've always done good in math, but she makes it the worst. She doesn't explain anything and makes rude remarks if you don't know what you're doing. Do whatever you can to switch professors. She doesn't even teach.
My whole life I have never been bad at math, however, I have to work for it. Personally I learn best through explanation. In this class, Professor Jien simply shows how to do a math problem with out any explanation of why or how. In her words "this should be easy," while most people in the class don't understand the topic, would not recommend her.
If i wanted to be taught by ta's id just teach myself because that is all that her class, you watch videos then go to her class and do a packet and hope that you can teach yourself calculus well enough.
I dropped this class in the middle of the semester because no matter what I did, I could not grasp the material because she DID NOT teach. She posted lectures of another professor online which you were expected to watch before class, then she gave you a worksheet on the material in class and did not teach whatsoever. Avoid at all costs.
Does not teach, instead posts videos of another instructor and counts that as the lecture. Worst teacher I have ever had. Avoid at all costs.
Unless you are completely insane, avoid at all costs. She might as well be speaking in riddles most of the time and almost never gives you a clear answer to a question. Without a doubt, she is the most bafflingly condescending teacher I have ever had.
I'd use the term professor loosely with Dr Jien. She barely teaches in class, instead she posts lecture videos of another UC professor. Class structure is clear and organized but the content can be hard to grasp. More than half of the tests are taken online which is convenient. Get used to the structure and get good study habits and you'll do fine.
Doesn't really teach in class just uses online lectures from other professors. Be prepared to have good study habits with this class. Most online checkpoints are taken online and some in person. Will surprise students with some pop quizzes.
Tough to understand. Received homework on the first day with little to no instructions.
Awful professor. Two quizzes a week and a 75 point test every Friday. Did not explain well. Made students feel stupid. DO NOT TAKE.
Dr. Jien is such an amazing professor! She speaks in perfect English and is easy to understand! She stutters sometimes, but that will NOT take away from her teaching. I love her class as it doesn't take much effort to understand the topics that she teaches. She is such an inspirational person, motivating me everyday to do my best! No calculators.
Can be a little hard to understand. She's a sweet lady who will help you a lot if you do not understand something. Not the best one out there, but some of these reviews are really exaggerated.
Avoid if you haven't taken Calculus at all. I can't imagine how difficult Dr. J would be for someone who wasn't introduced to the topics prior. I can tell she's knowledgeable about the topics, but barely gives students any feedback on work or on the lecture questions. Works through problems too fast. Random attendance quizzes, HW due every Monday.
Terrible. Does not teach the content tested on the exams. Avoid this professor if you can. Class is manageable but expect to teach yourself most of the topics covered. Has trouble communicating with students and is not empathetic whatsoever.
Somewhat hard to understand but you can understand her. Post class quizzes after every single class no matter what. Doesn't teach the material well if that at all. Will give lots of pop quizzes so be ready for that. You will most definitely have to learn all of the material out side of class. Nice person though.
Despite what everyone else said about her, she's not a bad professor. Prof. Jien has some amazing strategies to conquer the problems on the worksheets she passes out. I highly recommend going to the lecture since she does answer questions.
She is very forgiving and understanding, if you can't make your recitation she will allow you to take it with another session if you email her about it.
She is honestly super sweet. I had her for Calculus 1 and even though I found the class to be pretty difficult, I honestly think that she was a good teacher and wanted you to do well. She was very understanding and I remember accidentally missing a recitation, I let her know and she said I could just go to a different one during that week.
She's a great teacher, but without a calculus background, the class can be tough. The short class period makes it hard to cover all the content. Tests are easier than the daily worksheets. There are 3 daily tasks (pre-class, attendance, and participation quizzes) plus weekly WebAssigns. There are 6 tests (lowest dropped). Tough but helpful.
Do not take, taking this class will ruin your semester.
Horrible class, Professor J really does not care about her student.
This woman will make you miserable. I would not wish her class on anyone. Think of the worst class you have ever taken and then imagine taking it everyday. Professor Jien, not only extremely hard to understand and follow but also rude to anyone who asks questions or does not understand what she is saying.
Don't take this class if you want a social life. If you study, you might get a good grade. For the final exam, the study guide was nothing like a test. There was one video and two quizzes you had to complete each week and then five homework assignments due at the end of the week. She did give us chocolate on Halloween, though, and that was nice.
Horrible professor and class, avoid at all costs!
it was a flipped classroom, and she would teach things different then the videos did. soooo much work. 3 quizzes everyday one of which was attendance. did not understand how to teach students that didnt just get calculus. tests rarely matched study guides.
Avoid it if you want to actually pass. She uses daily videos then gives a paper everyday. Not to mention she does weekly bigger quizzes and then three quizzes a day for "practice" that literally does not help at all. If you try to ask her a question she'll just respond with "you should already know this" or "did you watch the videos?"!!!!!
She is terrible. You will not be passing if you take her class. She cannot be understood at all and explains nothing. Avoid at all costs and take your course online through a community college with an American professor.
I should have listened to the others on here bro. She's terrible. Made an exam on Halloween during one of my classes and the only other available time was 8-11pm that night. I ended up missing Halloween for some f*ckass exam. Picky on sig figs like others mentioned. Only class I've failed. 0/100 don't take her
Very difficult. 4 test and one virtual quiz. All test are proctored exam, which records your camera and screen. Grades mostly are exams. I do wish test were not like this. Homework are easy.
