He means well, but lacks the ability to convey material in a comprehensive manner; thick accent, often obscure and ambiguous. His language barrier is a liability to students trying to learn. An example would be: there were several times where a 6 digit number would be on the screen i.e. 347,046 and he would not know how to say it. Not recommended.
To get through the class, you need a strong math background and have the ability to study on your own. His practice exams are very close to the actual exams so review them before the exam. Overall, he's a really nice guy but I would not take him again, if given the opportunity. Btw, he loves football.
Compared to other STA9708 professors, I think he's one of the better ones. His style is very straightforward and he teaches you exactly what you need to know and doesn't get into too much theory. Provides a formula sheet that has all of the formulas you will need for quizzes/exams. I wish he could have controlled the slackers and goof-offs better.
This professor is easy and funny. If your math's background isn't good, take him!! Bcoz you don't actually know too much about the theory for exams. Quizzes could be a bit tricky but exams are easy, just redo all the quizzes then you gonna ace it. I got an A but didn't really spend much time on his course. Take him if you want an A.
He's a great professor. He'll cover everything you need to know for your quizzes & exams. There are 5 quizzes (he'll count your top 4 scores), a midterm and a final. Class attendance is not mandatory, but it's helpful if you want to do well. You can email him anytime (i.e. at 11:32 PM) and he'll get back to you promptly.
Yu (Ryan) is very funny that keeps the subject matter interesting. He is very helpful, but sometimes hard to understand. Certainly knows his stuff.
This class you really have to pay attention in class, because that is the only way to pass the midterm and final. His class is extremely boring and dull, even though he tries to make jokes. Anyway, he gives partial credit for midterm and final if you show the work on the exam paper. So that should help a little if not sth... Coffee = Pass the class
Best professor ever. Very helpful. Easy A!
The class is very boring, though he does try to make it more interesting, but i guess the material was not that exciting. He gives partial credit if you show your work on the problem sheet. Need to practice a lot. Online exercises are not much helpful.
He has a thick accent which made learning the material impossibe. He's a nice professor but I just wish I understood him!!
His accent does not bother at all!! In fact, he really tried to make the material as easy as possible; he even put on the midterm and final exams only what we went over in class. Nice professor, definitely recommend him;however, statistics is very boring in general!
he is a excellent prof. his materials is very useful. He try to make the class easier and try his best to help student. He is very fair. His exam only cover what he has already discussed. His class is not boring at all. He is a funny Prof. I believe it is easy to get good grade if you are serious student. the HW is not a problem too~ so take him
I did horribly in statistics in undergrad, but a good professor really does make the difference. He's a great professor, and his powerpoint slides are the best resource (don't need the book). He has an accent but he speaks very clearly and is easy to understand. He means it when he says NO curving, NO extra credit.. he will not budge on that.
He is nice professor but you have to learn almost everything by your own. And he will not review before the test. No curve, no extra credit.
He is humerous and kind. 2midterms,1final. gives partial credits for showing works on the test.
i went to him twice for help because i wasnt doing so well in his class. His response to me was that i need to try harder, he wasnt willing to help me at all
His slides are somewhat useful. 2 midterms and 1 final. You must do well on exams as he doesn't give any extra credit or round up. You will end up teaching yourself the course.
Spent a lot of time doing homework and practice problems. Professor does not curve or round final grade. Condescending and has trouble understanding / answering questions properly.
His slides made statistics much easier to learn. If you pay attention to him during the lectures you will be fine. Dont need to study the book on your own.
Prof Yu applies SAS examples in every class and hw. This is very beneficial for your professional career in the statistics field. For me taking 3 classes is challenging, ow you should be fine. His slides are a good reference. He is much friendlier, energetic and clearer than most stats professors. Significant study hours required.
Professor Yue is a nice guy who tries to make the subject interesting. He really wants the students to succeed and tries to help with extra time in tests and HW.
Disparity between what he tests and what he teaches. Doesn't comment code. Points at slides and just doesn't want to teach you what he puts on tests. Not clear what direction he was taking class in until after the first 70 days. His slides are filled with Linear Algebra , but that's not his focus.
He focused a lot on basic concepts, which are important if you prepare to go further in statistics. The exams focused a lot concepts a lot, calculations were simple. Overall speaking, a very nice and patient lecturer.
Doesn't matter if you know the material well. The midterm will consist of some questions that were not covered in his lecture notes or homework, the final and group project are graded on a much different (way tougher) criteria than the homework. Prepare to get a lower grade on this than you deserve. Really disappointed by the grading done here.
2 quizzes each worths 10%, 1 midterm and a final. Both semi-cumulative. Generous with partial credit so WRITE DOWN EVERY THOUGHT you have while taking the tests and quizzes - it will save you. Cheat sheet for final. Practice more calculation problems on our own since his class is more focused on conceptual stuff.
Partial credit for showing work. Takes attendance TWICE a lecture. 5 almost impossible homeworks, 7-9 hrs needed for each one, but HW is lousy 10% of grade. Very hard exams, not based on HW or class stuff. Cheat sheet helps nothing. Extended offfice hours, but what the use of it? Try to take another prof if you can, there are better ones.
Prof. Yue is my favorite professor of this semester, hands down. He is very efficient (yeah i know you don't usually say a professor is efficient but anyway) in conveying fundamental yet important ideas in a direct and understandable way. I have taken stat course in my undergrad but I didn't think I knew the stuff until I take Prof. Yue's class.
Ryan is a breath of fresh air to anyone whose studied math (or engineering) in the pass. He makes the course fun, engaging and straight forward. Even though the material is uninteresting, his enthusiasm is contagious and will keep you awake in the class. Take him if you can!
Way too difficult for the final exam
He's not the best, but he's also not the worst statistics professor in school. Just come to class because his slides are based off of the book. Online homework (which take forever to complete), 2 midterms and 1 final. He does not curve, not even a single point.
Prof. Yue is very methodical and highly organized. His lectures cover all the material he'll ask. Use the book for better or deeper understanding if needed, he might not help beyond lectures as it didn't seem to be the area of his own studies. He has a fine sense of humor but can be a bit sarcastic. Does not and will not curve. Easy A if you work.
Yu (Ryan) does a good job teaching stats-- reviews the previous lecture at the start of each class, allows unlimited submissions on HW, and has well-organized class sessions. Tests are fair and you are allowed a formula sheet. He does not really answer theoretical questions or seem to have knowledge about the practical application of the subject
Homework and lecture are straightforward, but exams are much deeper and confusing. He is not very knowledgeable about his field and cannot explain to your question well. No reviews and no sample questions for any exams. You can bring a cheat sheet, but it's not going to help a lot because all multiple choice is very confusing.
GPA killer. He doesn't curve at all. Two midterms and one final. 25,25, and 30, the rest are on homework. His class is straightforward, but the exams are much trickier than what you've learned in class. No sample exam, no review for the exam. which means you have to review through his easy lecture materials, and take the difficult exam.
His class wan't that hard, but exam is much harder. Pick him if you don't care about your GPA
avoid his class as possible, if you want to save your GPA
His exams are nothing what he or textbook teaches. Take him and destroy your GPA. His accent is VERY HEAVY! Very hard to understand!
Good, Straight Forward and clear grading structure. Lectures reinforce textbook readings and homework is good practice for the test. Online question bank is helpful for test prep. Tough subject matter but Prof is pretty patient. Formula sheets on exams, partial credit and offered office hours. Only 3 tests so be careful.
Plez do yourself a favor dont choose this professor. To be honest, his material is not hard and he is kind when answering question. However, HE DOESNT CARVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I got a final score about 0.1 below A and he gave me A-. I DONT UNDERSTAND HIM AT ALL. PLEASE DONT CHOOSE HIM IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GPA.
Hes on a serious power trip; he will laugh at a students question during class, bloat about his professor status on his custom PPT Slides, creates instructor based questions for online HW, no curve he doesnt care if no student receives an A, no review, no sample exams, and worst of all he doesnt test you from any of his custom material, its tb
He goes by Ryan. The textbook is useless, but the lectures are very good, and extremely helpful. Make sure you know the conceptual stuff - not just how to do the problems. 20-30% of the test questions are conceptual. He's a fair but strict grader. doesn't round up, but gives partial credit... Make sure you do well on the tests..
Class starts of hard and then by the end it's totally impossible to understand. I took this class first and it was a huge mistake. Very difficult formulas and his thick accent makes it twice as hard. Take literally anything else.
He's honestly not like the other reviews say! It takes a lot of effort outside of class, but it's college. He is VERY helpful & kind. Always answers your questions in class & office hours. He is hilarious at times too. On tests, show as much work as possible!!! The con is he doesn't curve & his exams can be pretty tough, but his lectures are GREAT.
I have a very mixed opinion about this guy. Doesn't give back tests to review which is obnoxious. i think he knows a lot about the subject but he can't teach. His tests are not very reflective of the material in class. Ultimately, I think he can do better on his end to help students succeed instead of being "funny" about how he doesn't curve.
My rate is not based on my grade. Don't be deceived by his gentleness nor his promises. HEAVY accent for sure. He is very nice until the students do the evaluation, then they got surprised with a tough Final-exam, which is far from his notes and the stupid Pearson practice website that he forces students to do the homework, very time consuming.
He's a fine professor - very by the book. Doesn't really curve much. His final exam was a bit tricky but he does give a bit of partial credit. Heavy accent but overall nice guy. As a teacher sometimes it's a bit hard to follow. Weekly Pearson homeworks 2 midterms and 1 final
Professor Yue is a good stats professor. Sometimes its hard to understand him because of his accent and the subject is tough as is but if you have the time to put in effort into the course you'll do okay. Would not take if you're looking for an easy course to balance out your semester.
A solid choice, not bad, not amazing. He is clear, takes time to answer questions, if not to a fault. Don't worry about the accent. Tries to be funny. Tests are multiple choice, generously gives partial credit if you explain your answers. COVID-19: He's a far better teacher in class than online. Prerecords class, just shows his screen, not his face
Plays prerecorded lectures he made & will not stray from it. Slides & practice q's arent his, uses Pearsons. Grade fully based on test which are different from lectures. If you work & may miss the first few mins of class, youll miss his announcements bc he wont record that. AVOID HIM. He begged us to do his eval but unwilling to help us w/ ANYTHING
Let me just say that this is the hardest Statistics class I have ever taken. His lectures are good and his slides are helpful, but in the end it doesn't matter because his exams are really tough. And the fact that he doesn't curve at all doesn't help either. I would not advise you to take him.
There was such a huge difference between the difficulty of his homework and tests. Seeing as he's the only prof for this class (STA 4155), maybe you're better off taking another elective (data analytics track) unless you genuinely really LOVE statistics.
Don't take his class. Save your GPA, time, and money. He doesn't care about students at all. Whenever you ask questions, he will say NO.
This course is a pre-requisite for the MSBA program and covers basic statistics. He assigned one homework per week (exam week excluded). Those practices are very time-consuming, try to finish them in advance if there's time. Tests are easy and fair. No extra credit, strictly followed the grading criteria listed in syllabus.
Decent amount of homework. Will not give extra credit or curve/scale grades. Does not answer E-mails. Beware that homework were not helpful for exams.
- If you're above average at math, this class will be fairly easy. You don't need to be a calculus wiz or any of that upper level stuff - time limit on final is brutal; do well on the first 2 exams - do NOT open the textbook, the Pearson's hw is what the tests are going to look like. ONLY review the Pearsons problems and you'll be set for an A
When requested, we heard NO - no extra credit, no curve, no extra time for exam, no practice tests, all NO's.. Homeworks are easy but not that helpful for exams. Avoid him if possible and care about your grade. He didn't care about his students. Requested us to complete his evaluation but what about ours? Doesn't hurt to be little bit flexible.
Prof Yue teaches a solid basic Stats course. The homework is a bit heavy but it did help me sink in the material learnt. His tests could be a bit rush but he gives very generous partial credit. He has some accent but he speaks slowly so everyone can understand. It's a class to learn, not an easy A class.
He made us turn our cameras on during the test, and he didn't give us a practice exam prior to the tests. Plus, we hade a final project in addition to a final exam. Despite that, he is a nice guy who gets the point across and genuinely cares about learning. I would say he is a good instructor and I'd take him again.
Probably one of the more organized profs in the STA dept. 6 HWs (10%), group final report (20%), midterm (35% - live on Zoom), and final (35% - take home). He's super patient and always willing to answers everyone's questions (there were a lot!). He slightly curved the midterm and was lenient for the report. A lot of work, but graded fairly.
Don't take if you slow test taker or weak at Stats. Lectures barely helpful, but good slides. Product of different educational system so 99% work is on you. Doesn't really care about students; looks helpful, but not really. Tough grader. Heavy accent, often hard to understand. Very annoying Pearson hw. Taken before covid.
The most organized professor since the pandemic. He answers every question, always willing to help. Extremely patient and understanding. Hw, midterm, take home final and a final project, all long. The material comes from his recordings and slides so get ready to rewatch. This is not an easy class, he explains the concepts well. You will learn!
Not a terrible professor but not the best. Homeworks worth only a small portion of your final grade, midterm was long, final was long and graded without a clear criteria. He doesn't really come off as caring about students and basically treats this as a job rather than helping students succeed. Teaching is a bit rigid which is good and bad
9705 has a ton of formulas and that's Yue's weak point. He parrots back formulas, and explanations are weak and rehearsed. I would take him in 9708 bec much less formula heavy. Lots of work - including a midterm, final and final project. Super strict grader, and won't curve the final grade. He is super caring and patient though.
Professor Yue makes learning math/statistics super fun. I don't understand all the negative reviews. As long as your study (cmon this is grad school, you should put at least 6-10 hours of studying before an exam), you should at least get a B. He gives GENEROUS points for showing work and I would love to take him again.
If you want to learn and build a strong foundation in statistics, you should take Yu Yue: - Excellent slides and presentation skills - Very responsive outside class - Detailed review slides and handouts before each class and exam - Covered all the topics in the syllabus - Passionate about teaching and statistics I studied: 97 hours in 16 weeks.
Professor Yue is one of the best professors you could find in Baruch. His lecture is hilarious and understandable. He makes his content easy to digest for us. I will definitely take his class again if I can. Just an incredibly brilliant professor with great sense of humor. Love his courses!
Great Professor. Come to class, pay attention, take notes when he does reviews, and do your homework. Review definitions and inferences from the statistics because he tests your knowledge of them. Couldn't say more good things.
Statistics is hard, no matter what professor you take it with. I hated Stats undergrad, & I only took this course bc it was mandatory for masters, but I did great bc of his teaching. The homework questions and his PowerPoints are all you need to study for his exams. He is funny and jokes around with all his students. He lets us out a bit early too!
Take this guy! He really knows his material and lets you bring a cheat sheet to exams. I was struggling with half of the midterm but so were like 10 other kids. After time was up, he gave us an extra 10 minutes, and another 10 minutes, and another... He gives partial credit if you show work, and really tries to foster learning. Overall, great dude!
The department needs more like this guy. He was engaging and clearly loves statistics. The final was hard but he is a very generous grader and awards a lot of partial credit. Very helpful and accessible outside class
My friend who took his class said it was a difficult class. Indeed it is difficult BUT you can do it. His exams are hard but if you understand the concept, you can do his exams. He clearly explains the materials, answers questions, his lecture notes are detailed. HW is through MyLab (Pearson). He's chill and make his lecture engaging for students.
He was very nice both as a person and a professor. His lectures were great and fun to listen to. All you need to prepare for exams was doing homework and reading lecture slides.
The course itself is challenging. The professor is highly knowledgeable and always ready to help. You should at least dedicate 8-10 hours of studying to increase your chances of passing. The exams are very difficult, so I strongly recommend not only studying the formulas, but also thoroughly understanding all the concepts.
Great lectures and enthusiastic professor which is rare these days. Don't be lazy, do the hws, use his reviews for exams, sign up for SACC tutoring if you need to, and remember that he is often open to see students after classes during his office hours. You are given all the resources to do well. A lot of formulas/concepts to learn and understand.
Amazing Professor! Powerpoints are to the point and clear. He is welcoming to any questions and is non judgmental. I would take a class with him any day. Exam uses calculator and not excel, so practice solving the math part while doing the hw. He provides a midterm review sheet and formula sheet which I found very helpful for the exam.
The professor is a harsh grader and can be difficult to understand. He has a passion for the material but if you aren't naturally good at statistics/taken classes before, it is a really tough class to do well in. I spent hours each week doing homework/studying. I met a few people who have failed and had to retake his class.
If you're taking STA9708 with Professor Yue, be ready for a challenging course. His grading is strict, and exams are much harder than the Pearson materials suggest. For those without a strong background, this class can be particularly tough. He does not curve grades, making it harder to achieve good marks. Consider other professors.
Difficult class, professor is clearly intelligent and passionate about the subject matter but has trouble at times expressing himself clearly. 2 exams worth about 70% of grade, no curves on exams or final grade. Extensive biweekly homework, final group project that is a bit more manageable.
Yu Yue is completely lacking in teaching ability. Most of the time he just stands there and points at his slides. He has policies on his syllabus to prevent an empty classroom - " Any behavior (leaving classroom during lecture) .. will get penalized.. There is a sloppiness about his class, with a "he'll figure it out along the way air".
He is knowledgeable, but he's not the best at teaching the material. For one, it's hard to understand him a lot of the time, and he also just reads the slides most of the time. I have had to learn basically everything on my own. Quizzes are designed to trick you, but the group project was easy. Uses lockdown browser.
Terrible professor overall. Final exam cooked everyone with most people only finishing 1 or 2 questions out of 5. Project is fine but very time consuming. Homeworks take forever and he does not accept late homework despite there being no policy for it on the syllabus. In class quizzes are ok. Required attendance for every class, even online.
This class is tough. I had acceptable coding experience and while most of the class wasn't too bad, the final exam was brutal. Even I was struggling for time, and many people had difficulty. Final project and quizzes were fine, and he is pretty good at lecturing since it's hard to teach coding off slides. Take the class but cram the final HARD.
class is not hard, PAY ATTENTION DONT MISS A SINGLE CLASS quizzes COST A LITTLE TOOO MUCH try ur best in final its actually very doable, dont panic, try your best there are partial credit for it
During all quizzes and the final we had access to his lecture notes. He was always super responsive outside of class. My GOAT
The professors didn't teach SAS syntax. Nor did professor go over practice problems in class. It would have helped if he did practice problems.
Grading is far too strict and capricious without a firm establishment of standards - much less a grading rubric or sample answers that set expectations. Feedback is non-existent. Lectures are largely worthless (you'll end up teaching yourself).
The 80% of your grade will come from paper-based exams, no excel used in the class. The homework takes anywhere from 3-6 hours but it's only worth 20% of the overall grading. The exams are much more difficult, dense, and complicated than what he teaches or homework assignments, be ready to study at least 10 hours. Too many students failing his class.
This professor is incredibly bad at conveying course material in any sort of understandable fashion. His lectures and slides are confusing, with homework taking at least 3 hours regularly. With no real helpful review materials as the exam questions are harder than the homework and the example questions on his slides do not match exams. Avoid.
