He is one of the smartest Professor on Campus. His classes are enjoyable and cool. He makes Differential equations understandable.. Perfect professor.
This guy is a jerk! Avoid him if possible. Will not teach you anything. Every lecture is a collection of chaotic junk.
This prof would teach you all the basics for Cal IV, but his quizes r sometimes very tricky. Open book, best if u study n don use book or else u wont be able to finish the quiz. i think he knows how to teach n does it well. oh yea, learn the stuff beyond the current stuff, if he ask, u could get pts
Cal IV is really hard course, but this guy really gonna help you. Just go to the lecture and buy his notes. Make sure understand the HW, you will be just fine!
This is an easy A class without learning anything if you're CSE major. I never went to class and got a fat A. Don't use your formal algorithm concepts coz the answer is just "approximate." ex. TSP is not done by backtracking. Take it for double major requirement if your first major is CSE.
Enjoy Cal IV
He was gone for a whole month and we learned nothing from the TA who made the class fall behind. If he planned to be away for 1/4 of the semester, he should have warned people before people registered.
He usually replies to my email on the same day I sent it. His lectures are truly enjoyable. Be sure to attend the recitation class because some homework problems might not have been covered in class when they are assigned. Old quizzes can give a good indication about future exams, but not always.
ok heres the deal: go to every single lecture...DONT MISS ONE. and buy his "deng notes"- they are your only hope of passing. basically for the quizzes, most of the answers are in the book in a similar question, so its not really how much you know its how fast u cant find the answers. and the final is MUCH HARDER! so take the class but pay attention

was in china for a month. didn't learn much and got a decent grade. hopefully i don't need to know to much of this stuff cuz i really didn't learn anything, often his deng-notes have errors, yet are a must have to pass, and his lectures are mistake filled. overall a decent professor only cuz he makes the class easy and with minimal work
Very awesome professor, one of the best I ever had at SBU. Always replies to emails, but he is strict on homework and exam grading.
He did and may very well continue to cancel 1/3 of the classes. So if you really wish to learn the real Calculas IV in the full classtime alloted as you are suppose to, turn to the math department. Many students heavily rely on the "Deng notes" during exams, only IMO because they do not know the materail well enough due to cancelled classes.
Avoid at all cost if you have any desire at all to learn the whole material that you are supposed to in a 4-credit class. Taught maybe 3 credits worth of material and slacked off often by cancelling all Friday classes.
Considering that he cancelled all friday lectures and even a whole week at one point, he did alright in getting through the material. However, he did rush at some points so I wish he had cancelled maybe just every other Friday. Great prof and responds to emails the same or next day. I heard the MAT prof blows so you're probably better off in AMS.
well prepaired!

He is very different in class and after class, he is a nice professor in calss, but kind mean after class.
Terribly hard tests. I have no idea what's going on in his class.
i've read the other comments about this professor and i dont think the posters attended class. he is passionate about his subject and academics in general, hence he can come across a little brash, but that's because he doesn't have hours for students who aren't willing to share his passion, or at least try. he's a good professor.
This guy is not particulary interested in the students. He is more focused on various research projects. Missed the last two classes and let the TA teach the remainder of the class. Just goes to show how much he cares. I went to him because I felt like I was failing, he did not give me much hope so I PNCed the class. Class is at 8.
pretty much useless. He gives homework on items you haven't even covered as well as puts items on tests that you have yet to learn... DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM...
Not an easy class but certainly not impossible. Grades are heavily curved, e.g. an 80 = A. You absolutely must do your hw, study, and know his 'Deng Notes'. He's a very good teacher, he likes the material and it shows but he doesn't take any crap. If you're interested and motivated - take this class, if you want an easy A look elsewhere.
I really got a lot out of this class; although it is an applied course, the lectures provided intuitive proofs that elucidated the material really nicely. It took me a little while to figure out that in order to do well on the quizes that I had to study prior years quizzes and homeworks in particular (they are provided). The curve is very generou
Don't take his class, he doesn't know how to teach properly. He is the first professor I hate at Stony Brook. I totally don't like this person and his teaching style.
The earliest class, the worst professor.
He is a good professor for me because I like his style. The lecture is very illustrative. He shows his passion, too.
He is one of the smartest professors I ever have met. He is very excellent in teaching and research. He works very hard. I like his teaching style very much. His lecture is very helpful to me.
interesting professor. he is very helpful.
I like his teaching style, this prof always makes materials easy to understand, he requires challenging homeworks and quizes, you'll learn a lot of stuff from him.
His quizzes and exams are easy and they are open book. It will be helpful to do the homework although sometimes they are hard and take some time but you learn a lot our of that. He is a REALLY funny and nice guy. He always makes jokes in class. One thing is that his final is usually harder, but still reasonable!!
Good teacher. Fair grading, enthusiastic. Will take another class with him
Straight foward professor. Study from Deng book previous exams to get good grades on quizzes/final. All problems are based off some Deng book material. Homeworks on the other hand are difficult. My suggestion: start early, ask TA, find similiar problem in book.
He is very nice. He always helps the students who are in difficulty in study. His lecture is very wonderful. He is very excellent in research and teaching. I have learned a lot from him.
He is a really good teacher, and hes really freaking funny. the only class ive every managed to stay awake for at 8:05. and it was calc 4! take it with him for sure. its given later next semester too.
I don't see how he was as good of a professor as people tout him on here to be. His homeworks, quizzes, and the final are straight from *HIS* textbook. Basically, if you didn't buy his version of "Calculus IV With Many Examples" you'd screw up all his assignments. Sure, it's an easy A, but I felt like I got cheated out of a proper Calculus course.
Great professor, funny guy, and pretty interesting. Sadly, this is a calculus 4 class at 8:05 in the morning. DEFINITELY buy his version of the calc textbook, it is much cheaper, and the material similar to the tests/quizzes can be found in them. He lets us take open book open notes tests which is great. Sadly the homework is actually challenging
Absolutely the worst professor you will ever see.
I am a little amazed at the majority of positive feedback. I do not see how this professor could be rated as 'good'. IMHO, i wouldnt mind the class if he would continue his strategy of allowing to use computers on tests, but since he banned use of anything besides notes, the average on tests had dropped significantly. his humor is retarded.
Same with the guy below me: how can he be considered such a good teacher if his 'tests' and 'quizzes' are so stupid and non-related to the material? He teaches about a quarter of the actual material needed in a 4 credit course.
He puts links to Wikipedia and lectures on that. If you think that's the way to spend your three credits, then go ahead. But his tests are stupid because if you're one second late you get a 0. A terrible guy who has a terrible attitude problem and shouts at students. And he just reads off slides, or talks about his research.
Tough class, but he's always available to answer question. I've emailed him at 3am and received a detailed response within minutes. Very funny guy, but as most of the other rating say, it's a tough class. Buy his book, its only $20, and 90% of test questions come directly from it.
The class has several problems: 1. Professor is not very helpful in class or office hours. His book has solutions to similar problems, but has very many mistakes. The solutions skip many steps so it is difficult to follow, and therefore don't teach efficiently. He could have uploaded expand version of the book in a .pdf on his site.
Everything is good,he is a nice teacher.
Dont take this course if it has close book exams. In the past several semesters, Prof.Deng always give student open book exams. However, for the Spring, 2011, we didnt have open book exam. Those exams were really hard even though we could use cheat sheet. so you should choose to have open book exams.
A VERY FUNNY GUY WITH FULL OF PASSION OF TEACHING. HE IS VERY BUSY BUT STILL ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS IN DETAILS TIMELY. YOUR WILL HAVE FUN IN THE CLASS.
Very very bad. He has zero teaching ability. Better off sleeping on a book.
he is a very interesting professor, and very helpful. but the thing he teaches in class is kind of difficult.
He is NOT nice at all!!!Every time you ask him a question, he makes you feel stupid yourself.
There are 2 books: the 1st is std. issue (~$150)& then theres his "textbook" (ALL his lectures, plenty of egs & exams from past 15ish semesters (~$50): get this book! THE REVIEW: He is VERY HELPFUL. Made a tough class simple to learn and is very accessible. Despite being insanely genius, he is a GREAT professor. For Calc IV, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Deng is a great teacher. He's funny and incredibly brilliant. Go to every class... do the homework and study HIS textbook (not the class one) and you'll do fine. Take advantage of his office hours. I didn't until the last week and he was super helpful. Wish I had gone all along. You'll learn a lot =]
He is very nice.He is very excellent in teaching and research. He always helps students who are in difficulty, such that students have learned a lot in mathematical sciences.
Deng is the best! Chose grading format w/ class vote on first day. Homework 50%-3 quizzes@10%each-final 20%. Cheat sheet allowed but you MUST study. Go to every class. Very tough tests (3 Qs, answer 2/3) but curve made up for it (I got a 65: B-). Deng is a brilliant professor- very funny/approachable/caring; perhaps my favorite at Stony Brook!
He's a really nice guy, and a pretty good instructor. His tests are way, way harder than what the lectures and homework prepare you for, though.
The lectures were clear and Deng was a solid instructor. The HWs got progressively weirder and shouldn't have counted for 50%. Exams were hard, but a student honestly working through his book/hws could do well. Grading was fairly kind - I got an A. Still, I would change the grading to maybe 25% HW, 40% Quizzes, 35% Final with 1 Q and 1 HW dropped.
very nice guy, tries to be funny. mostly it's just his attempts that are funny. very enthusiastic: at the end of each class it looks like he just ran a marathon. lectures start to get confusing about the second week. for my class we were able to choose our own grading system. protip: request cheat sheets. write all homework solutions on them.
The class is alright. His teaching is pretty good. You will find his class is helpful if you go to the lecture everyday, but the test gets harder and harder. This is a class you can vote for the grade distribution. If you vote more for the homework, the homework will be extremely hard.
Deng is one of the best math professors I've had. As he lectures, he adds quick jokes that fit in perfectly with what we are learning. He lets the class vote on the percentages of the homework, midterms, and final exam. I would choose 40% for the homework, 15% for the hard final, and 45% for the 3 midterms. He is always there 247 by email to help.
Great Professor. Buy his textbook, it is the key to get an A. If you can do the problems in the textbook, you'll Ace his exams. Choose the 40% hw, 30% exams, 30% final distribution. His textbook also has detailed solutions to every problem in the book. Have Fun!
Is a bad lecturer
Good guy, easy class, but his lectures are long and tedious. easy to lose interest and get lost in his class.
One of the best professors I have ever had, I highly suggest him. Buy the textbook and read it, it is highly worth it! Homework and tests are a bit tough, but reading the textbook will help a lot.
The nicest and funniest professor I've had so far. He explains things well, and if you try and do most problems in his textbook, you should be okay for hw and tests. Office hours can be a bit messy but the TAs were awesome when I needed help.
Does not teach concepts very well and instead focuses on "plug and chug" methods to get a quick answer. A few of these methods do not make logical sense and I needed a good deal of outside help to learn the (general???) method. The textbook written by the professor doesn't help in explaining concepts and just gives the plug and chug method.
Professor Deng is honestly one of the best professors you can find here at Stony Brook when it comes to Mathematics. He is funny, albeit sometimes corny, but he really does make learning math so much fun. You are allowed a cheat sheet front/back for all tests, and 3 front/back for final; making the tests a breeze. 10/10 would take him again!!
i love this man. i would take every AMS course ever that he teaches.
He's on your side, it's that simple. Do the work, seek him if you need help you'll do very well.
He explains the material pretty well, although he goes through his lectures too fast. He doesn't post them online, but they're pretty parallel to his textbook. His first midterm was harder than it should've been, but for the most part he's pretty fair.
A highly overrated professor. He is very nice and friendly, but you will not learn much at all from his class since his lectures and notes are largely incoherent ramblings with insufficient explanations. Also, all of our tests/assignments involve writing a program, yet not a single line of code was ever shown in lecture or on the notes -- not once
The best professor to have for AMS361. A lot of his test questions and homework questions are straight from his textbook, so definitely buy it. Just copy as many of the questions from the end of the sections onto your cheat sheet and you should be fine. He is the bro
Deng is great- he's funny and wants you to succeed. The class is hard, but he's fair and listens to students, like when people told him the class was too fast paced he slowed down. That said, his slides can be a little difficult to reread sometimes, and the way he stores old lectures is annoying to access.
This class was physics, calculus, and programming heavy. He explains certain concepts and expects you to be able to implement the code for that. Overall the material was difficult. The grading was pretty lax, but the curve is not in your advantage. I got a 95% average and got an A-. Professor is caring and very helpful with homework.
lectures do not really help, reviews as well better off going to more recitations then to lectures to learn, basically self taught from homework and recitations, free online textbook, cheat sheet for tests are very helpful
Absolutely overrated. Stopped going to lectures about halfway in and started doing better. His "lectures" amount to him doing a couple of problems which are line-for-line from the textbook. Don't expect to learn anything you couldn't have learned from an hour with the book. It's safe to say I feel cheated out of my tuition for this class
One of the best math professors i've had so far. Amazing lectures and pretty comical at times. 3 short tests, weekly homework and a final. Make sure to have his textbook, I miss him already. If you like math you'll enjoy this class :)
This class is alright. He just takes examples from his textbook and goes through them during class. The textbook is a must. However, his final is not representative of the entire course, which is not fair. His accent is thick and it was sometimes hard to understand him during class. The TAs were very helpful for the class.
His lectures can be a mixed difficulty bag and his final exam is hard, but he's a nice guy! Given the pandemic situation many students continue to deal with, he let students attend any recitation for an unlimited number of times. It's very possible for you to get the A if you go to recitation at least 2x per week.
I thought he had some of the greatest lectures. He was thorough yet he manages to keeps the class engaged with his jokes. I thought his tests weren't too bad prior to COVID but near impossible after when we took online tests. However, he makes up for it with a very generous curve. You'll learn so much from him!
He was amazing right up until we had the shift to online due to the pandemic. From that point on all the lectures were bogged down with technical issues such as Prof. Deng's internet lagging causing the lectures to lag like no tomorrow. Still, he was very generous and understanding of the circumstances and graded accordingly.
he is great, funny friendly & knowledgeable. but grading is harsh with strict rules and you should always refer syllabus for rules. his class is useful and challenging. so you need to work hard and do the textbook questions. if u understand 90% of the HW and textbook questions, you ll get A
While his lectures can be messy sometimes, you'll never leave class without a laugh. He sometimes brings up crazy analogies and examples just to make sure you'll never fall asleep in lecture and that you'll know what you're doing for the HWs. I just wished I paid much more attention and did much more extra practice outside class, however.
If there was an available option to select this professor as the lecturer for all the classes I have to take to graduate, that's the option I'd go with. Super informative lectures on a very interesting topic.
If you want to choose Deng, be prepared to choose study by yourself. The reason of why i give him a one totally due to this is the lowest choice in the system. This guy is a talented person who can make lectures become disasters and give everyone extremely heavy pressures (both students and teaching assistants).
Deng is a funny guy who makes Calc 4 easy. Don't take this class if you are interested in in depth descriptions of things. Also don't listen to people who say this class is hard, they are just not smart.
Great person, not the best professor. He expects you to know everything and it feels like he just skims over the material/slides. This is a coding class but he doesn't teach it. I would suggest to not take this class unless your coding skills are strong and have great understanding of these topics: linear algebra, interpolation, ODE, BVP, FFT.
GREAT dude but his lectures can be a little hard to follow at times. He keeps class really fun, though, so it's more than tolerable. Very approachable both in and out of class and is amazing at giving advice or helping you through a problem step by step. I love this man he's amazing but he does make you work for your grade it's not a free A.
Deng is a good lecturer and his textbook and lecture notes are super helpful. The homework assignments and tests can be difficult though since he typically goes over easier examples in lecture.
He's a good professor, he does a ton of example problems during lecture and a lot of his homework problems are either identical or very similar to the ones in his textbook. His three midterms were very reasonable but the final was a lot more difficult. He's a very nice guy and he really tries to make the class fun and have everyone engaged
Really like talking about nonsense stories on class.
“Great Professor for Parallel Computing!” Professor Deng has a very clear and organized gradebook, which makes tracking your progress stress-free. His ability to explain challenging definitions and theories about parallel computing is exceptional. He uses a lot of engaging and relatable stories to make complex concepts easier to understand.
Professor Deng is fantastic at breaking down complicated topics in a way that makes them accessible and fun. He does small things to improve the mood of the classroom. It seems like he's having fun teaching, and that enthusiasm is contagious. Great class.
The Professor has very detailed notes and assigns 8 hws total with 4 questions each (often just past hws questions with small changes). Midterms are 3 questions where you choose 2. His lectures are interesting though because he jokes in class. Lets class vote on weights for midterms, hw (up to 30%), final. Grades are based on class performance.
unreasonable and hard to understand what he is saying.
Class was a fever dream. Very funny teacher and engaging lecture and gave funny analogies to math concepts. Class he would write insane shit, smile, and go "easy right?"(it wasnt). HW is 4 questions a week, takes about 6 hours, a requires human sacrifice. Very reachable, he gives out his phone number, I can call him rn.
his exams are straightforward, some of the problems are basically the same as his reviews. The homework was harder than the exam, from my perspective. you are allowed to have cheat sheets to all of his exams, which is how I got that A. Once you understand the concepts, you'll do fine.
