Ling expects students to do something that many of them are just not used to: thinking. Its not that she doesn't answer student's questions, its that she expects you to think and use all the information she has already presented to you. Just awful. She lectures hardly at all, doesn't tell you what you should be reading in the text, then expects you to be knowledgable enough to write an essay exam. The "lab" is little more than mineral ID, day after day after day, while she disappears for an hour or more. I don't feel I've learned much of anything. What a waste!

Ling's class was really fun! At first, I found it really frustrating that she didn't structure class in the "traditional" way. Avoid if possible. Groupwork is 90% of your grade, and usually you will be grouped with idiots/lazies. Be prepared to actually WORK (it's not hard work, but she nitpicks at EVERYTHING you submit). Does not teach. Not encouraging at all. Will not hesitate to call you an idiot if you disagree with the political agenda she pushes on the class.
