Hm. Heavy accent. Hard topic to understand, but he managed whole lot better than other profs. He aims for understanding of the basic concepts. Hard to understand with his heavy accent. LOOK AT SYLLABUS to see if you agree with grading %'s. Otherwise talk 'bout it early for revision!
Im sure out of all the Fin 350 professors at state, Shibuya is one of the best. He's a funny guy and tries to keep the subject interesting.During summer:1 midterm and final all MC, no hwk.He adjusts the grades like crazy so you have a better chance of passing.
for summer, 1 mt, i final. All mt. He added extra points so you have a really good chance of passing this class. He has a big japanese accent. Also, it's pretty much useless to go to class, he just goes over slides. Just spend your time reading and doing the book assignments and you'll do fine.i passed w/ a B after the extra points given at the end
He's cool and im sure hes better than the rest of the fin teachers. His grading scale is pretty fair (65% for a C) He gave us 1 midterm and 1 final. It was pretty useless going to class because all he really did was spit out what was on his horrible ppt slides. If you study on your own and actually understand the concepts you'll be fine.
Very nice, funny, friendly. Patient with questions and will go over material until you understand. Read the book- do the suggested problems and ask questions in class. He can get off track a bit. Attendance not mandatory but this is a hard class so go each time.
He is so awesome!!! He's verry generous and knows our situations. His exams are not that hard. He curves & you can bring a 1 cheet-sheet. Take him!!! I wish he teaches all the Finance classes!!! He is the teacher you definitely want to take☆☆
very knowledgable teacher. knows the subject very well and is extremely talented in math. be warned, he does have a pretty thick accent. but that aside if you read the book before class he goes a good job of teaching. go to him for FIN350, highly recommended. i hear his DS110 class isn't so great though.
Professor Shibuya was the worst math teacher I ever had in life he had a very heavy accent that no one understood and didnt even know how to teach the material from the textbook he would teach it in a japaneese system which was not even in the book. I do not advise you to take him and all he did was test us on word problems
I think this was the first semester he teach, atucally he is a teach the easiest way, except the first quiz, but for me is still easy, may be i come from Asia, and i saw many people seems don't understand his teaching way and start to bleem on his pronounceation because he has strong japanese accent, he is very nice and not so difficult.
Professor Shibuya was one of the worst math teachers i have ever had. I am not blaming his awful teaching on his accent but his methods. He unreasonably quizzes almost every class and is very deceptive. Be aware before you choose his class because this was my least favorite class at sfsu.
Finance 350 is a difficult class itself. Shibuya is a fair grader and tries his best to explain concepts and give extra credit. He wants you to pass and get a good grasp of the material. 4 exams, 1 page of notes allowed during exam, attendance not required but recommended. No inane groupwork. Fairly straightforward class. Good teacher I say!
By far the worst math teacher I have ever had in my life. If your expexting to walk in an understand the material be prepared to deal with his accent and his unclear explanations of most problems in the text book. Please do not waste your time and money on this guy its really not worth it. I know half my class for sure failed.
BEWARE! :tons of quiz's:hard midterm:horrible lectures:hard grader:final is ridiculous:I did not pass:you won't like it! Don't do it!
This is a teach your self course!
I heard that is not that bad. Does anyone know if he allows the use financial calculators during the exam?
Shibuya is talented in math and wants to help you become a better critical thinker. The 10 quizzes, midterm & final are fair. He doesn't test you on things unless he already assigned in hw or gone over in class. Take good notes and do your hw, you will do fine. If you don't practice the problems, how do you expect to pass?
His class is hard. esp. his Midterms and final are very tricky. HW problems are waste of time cuz his midterm and final is not even close to the HW problems. His quizzes are ok. But everything else is hard nothing from the book. good luck taking him.
honestly...this class is a joke, DO NOT TAKE HIM! even if it werent for his thick accent, this method of teaching is idiotic. I left that class learing NOTHING! he's absolutly no help at all. the one good thing about his class is his curving, which he only does bc his whole class would fail if he didnt
I am in summer school right now b/c of this man! : (
He's an awesome teacher. He might have a thick accent, but this guy breaks down everything for you. You just need to follow along during the lecture. This is a FINANCING class. It WILL have math. If you have difficulties in algebra, expect to have a difficult time in FIN 350, MGMT 407, DS 412, and ACCT 100, even more.
Shibuya is a good teacher. He is always happy and willing to help out, but sometimes he is hard to understand and i thought his tests and quizzes were pretty hard. I definitely learned a lot though, if you take this class and try hard you will get a good grasp of the subject.
Hes not too bad. I took him for both DS110 and FIN350. He is a MUCH better finance teacher than he is a math teacher. I walked out of his DS110 class not learning all that much; I walked out his finance class with a very good grasp of the core concepts. So long story short, take him for FIN350, skip him if you for DS!
Dont take this guy. I put so much effort into this class. I mean countless hours of studying and being tutor and still had difficulties with his test. They are worded poorly and structured even worse. DO NOT TAKE HIM
I like how in his class of DS110, you get to learn, and do hands-on problems much like I did in High School. I think he makes learning worthwhile and rewarding.
Keeping delinquent faculty on staff is typical for the lowest ghetto school in the state so SFSU admin has no choice - its not really his fault that he got the job - it is the admin fault for not firing him right after it was clear that he can't speak English. Pardon me but last time I checked SFSU is located in the state of California, which is Un
Horrible, stay away. Can write an essay about how bad this instructor is, however lets keep it simple - take someone else and you would be much better off!
Horrible accent, hard to understand and complete absence of rational teaching method. Tries to sell the ?show your work? concept but fails to honor his own policy ? if your answer is different no matter if your work is perfect (say you hit the wrong digit on your calculator) you get zero credit. Skip his sections if you can ? the other FIN350 p
Dont take this guy. He is bad news. Total disconnect between book problems and class quizzes and what shows up on the tests.
Semester is over and I have no idea what this class was all about. Dont get me wrong - I attended EVERY single period, did the homework and attended the after class sessions in an attempt to get better at this. Well I will leave it to the rest of you to conclude where all of this left me... And no, I'm not one of those slackers, I'm GPA3.9 student.
OMG professor Shibuya totally sucks. I mean if I sucked so bad at my job I would feel real uncomfortable and I would want to get better. If you want to test your skills in hard work and zero results I strongly suggest you take him!
Didn't learn anything from this class. Gives a quiz every week. 30% Quizzes, 30% Midterm, 40% Final Exam. Gives at least 2 hw assignment and 13 quizzes, but only keeps the top 10. Couldn't understand what he was teaching with the accent. Does grading curve. Tells you to show your work and he'll give you credit, but your answer must correct.
People are right when they say FIN 350 is the hardest course in business especially when you have a teacher that can't teach very well. It's a lie when he says he gives partial credit if you do the steps right, but don't get the correct answer. Majority of the class did very bad so the grading curve was okay. If everyone does bad then you may pass
Poor teacher, hard to understand. Sure he knows his stuff, but he can't communicate it to the class so whats the point? Incredibly hard grader, will mark you down for the smallest detail, and enjoys it too. look at the class schedule and wonder why shibuya's classes are all empty. There's definitely a reason, do yourself a favor, do not take.
Worst class ever! Finance is difficult enough as it is, do yourself a favor and not take Shibuya. Exams are very, very difficult. Take someone else!
There is a reason why he always has space available in his class. He's horrible! I would not reccommend taking him at all!If you already enrolled drop his course before the course or grade can be recorded!Don't just walk, run!Doesn't allow use of calculators, homework and lectures DO NOT relate to quizzes and tests, thick accent, hard to understand.
His accent is hard to understand but if you pay attention, you can still understand what he was talking about as long as you read the powerpoint & textbook before the class. I got a D in mid-term because I was too busy to read the book. However, I pass the class with a B. The quizzes are very helpful. Don't take him if you are lazy and stupid.
Horrible, if you take him you will be sorry!!!
terrible instructor vary hard to understand. reading the book and doing h.w is a waste of time b/c test and quiz arn't even close to h.w problems. test is "extremely" (not vary) confusing. jump all over the topic during lecture and powerpoint slide is useless b/c he skip 2/3 of the p.p.slide. don't waste your money.
His lectures have no structure and you can't understand him anyway. The exams are different from HW and quizzes. 59% of the class did not pass the midterm. My GPA is 3.8 pre-Shibuya and I will probably pass this class with a C-. DO NOT TAKE HIM. HE IS A DISGRACE TO CSU SAN FRANCISCO.
Horrible teaching style. Didn't learn a thing from his class. This is a self-teaching class. I passed this class by doing the Aplia hw over and over again. But upside is, he curves like crazy if people doing bad in his class.
Horrible, stay away. The exams are different from HW and quizzes.
I will say this: avoid this guy like the plauge. He is the worst teacher I have ever had. Reading is useless, going to class is usless, and talking to him is useless. This class made me despise finance. His tests are very hard and his lectures deviate from what is on the tests. Dont take him.
I HAVE TAKEN MR. SHIBUYA FOR 3 CLASSES AND THINK RATINGS ARE UNFAIR. YES, HIS COURSES ARE PROBALLY NOT THE EASIEST BUT IF YOU APPLY YOURSELF YOU CAN ACTUALLY LEARN SOMETHING. IF YOU JUST WANT AN EASY COURSE TO SKIM THROUGH, THIS IS NOT THE TEACHER FOR YOU. I SUGGEST TAKING RESPONSIBILITY AND BLAMING OTHERS EDUCATIONAL SHORTFALLS.
His class is definitely hard, and you need to know algebra for this class!! If you do all the homework problems, and take the time to understand how to apply the concepts and formulas, then you'll do fine in the class. His answers to my questions were short, but it was enough to help me understand the concept/problem.
This pre req class is strictly a money maker for SFSU. All students passed even though the average grade was in the 60s. The teacher speaks very poor English, skips over solution steps in class, and doesn't bother to understand students questions. I could see this type of teacher in high school or a poor community college, but come on SFSU.
He needs to work on the format of the class. Instead of 3 mid-terms, there should be 5-6 exams and the final should not be cumulative. Collect homework to keep people from waiting till the last minute to study. Computational exams should NOT be multiple choice. Pulling small details from the book or poorly worded questions is not appropriate.
Avoid this class.Exam questions are not related to homework and very difficult. If your major is not finance than good luck because this class far more complicated than an introductory class supposed to be.
Class is based on low question multiple choice exams which vary from computational questions to obscure details from the textbook not emphasized in class. Not very responsive to emails, and will not answer any questions as to the content of exams. Practice final exam varied greatly from the actual final. Luckily, he applies a huge curve. (65% B)
His test are difficult. He does not collect homework. The lecture are straight out of the book. BUT, this man is a genius who has 2 PHDs where one is from Tokyo Institute of Technology. This professor has greatly influenced me academically because of his mathematical intelligence, and philosophical insight. If you love finance this is your man.
10 mc online assignments and pop quizzes. one midterm and one fianl. homework are similar to practice problems in class. textbook are not required but you will need it for the in class practing problem. i didn't buy the book and still get a grade i want for this class. he is not easy but you will learn a lot and get the grade you want.
Great Professor, I took this class over the summer and it was very demanding, but reasonable. Their were daily 5 to 8 question quizzes, online homework, and a Final. If you ask for help the professor will take time to help you. IF you put forth the effort you will do good. Just do everything that is asked of you and stay on top of the homework.
He's extremely smart. It's obvious he's been in the finance game for quite some time. That being said, I'd trust him more with my company than my grade. He's a tad difficult to understand. Class is structured for the HW to be due before learn the content in class. Quizzes are challenging. Get all of the HW pts you can. He curves well.
I normally try to avoid writing bad reviews, but this one is necessary. Shibuya is a nice guy, dare I say actually pretty cool. He's obviously super bright, but teaching is not his strong suit. He assigns problems that he never teaches, has to curve because everyone fails, etc. This could (and should) be a great class. It is, however, a nightmare.
He is a nice professor and knows the material. He assigns a lot of hw, but the ones he goes over in class are important. It's a hard class to pass, but it can be done with the curve.
He is very nice. this class is hard to get an A. if you just expect to pass the class, you have to go to lecture and do online exercises, then you will be fine.
3 Tests (20%/each), 1 final (40%). He tells you exactly what's expected and posts everything online, including homework answers. Tests consist of multiple choice + word problems. Many of them come from the online quizzes, which are not graded. I ended up with an A-. He grades on a curve and raises grades at the semester end if he sees improvement.
Shibuya is a nice guy, he understands ACCT 303 is a difficult subject. It was his first time teaching ACCT 303 class so we should cut him some slack. He provides many practice problems that the exams contain half the same questions. He will try to help you the best he can, and wants you to pass. Besides the exams and final, there was a paper to do.
this professor is really hard, he is a nice guy, but his exams are very tricky and not same as homework. if you do bad in one exam, than consider dropping the class. he does not even give partial credit on the calculation problems. i would recommend a different professor if finance is not your thing. i sufferend and worked hard in this class.
Shibuya is a super smart guy. Took him over the summer and man oh man. Talk about tricky questions, understand the topics and concepts very well as you will need to connect the dots during the quizzes. Quizzes were every day for the summer 8-10 q's. Final was easier than I thought basically, the same Q's as the quiz. Work Hard=A. Curves nicely too.
Hard calcuations problems, but the multiple choice questions were pretty easy. His new invention of "True and False" questions are hard and wish he would not put it on our final. Miss a class- dont know what he is talking about, gotta attend class.
He is a very nice professor and wants you to pass his class, however, the material in his lectures could be lot more interesting. His class is just like reading the chapter in the textbook. It is a very difficult subject and this class requires a lot of self study, The curve helps a lot!
If you're a good student and love math, then its pretty chill. However, his accent is very heavy heavy. Overall, he will go over examples and take questions. He gave quizzes to make sure you're on task, but quizzes are not scored, which is good. Just go to class and you'll learn something LOL.
What he told me when I was nervous about one of the test "You can practice for a sport all you want but you never know what will come into play when the game starts" what the hell is that supposed to mean. His test are extremely hard and does not do any review for the test. I do not recommend him if you have a hard time in math.
By far the hardest class I've ever taken. He's hard to understand, and his tests were beyond hard. The homework wasnt bad,but then the test would come and it'd be a thousand times harder than anything i studied for. If u dont go to class you'll be lost next class. Dont take this class unless if your good at math already.
Would not recommend this teacher. Took him for business calc and ended up failing. You would think as a general class mostly of freshman he would be a bit more lenient. Its very hard to understand with his accent and your grade is only based on 3 tests and the final. Retaking with another teacher and its already so much easier to understand
Very unorganised.
No study guide or organization on what subjects to focus on. The class is like reading a textbook and is overall useless to go to. I found it was easier to teach myself this course than to listen to him. Grades? You have no idea where you stand in his class or any idea of what the curve could be until AFTER the final. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!
Shibuya is almost too knowledgable for this course. Hard to understand and follow along when he doesn't show his work and skips steps without explanations. he talks about something real quick and moves on. I recommend taking with another professor unless you love math because shibuyas expectations are too high for most of the class.
Terrible teacher. Can't even avoid because he is the only professor teaching this course.
He is OK. He's nice, he lets you use the notes and everything, but the tests are still hard and most students fail. The lecture is only 50 minutes which is not enough for him to go over solutions clearly. Skips steps which is very confusing.
Don't know where to start with this teacher. When you walk in the classroom he makes you feel borderline retarded. His handwriting looks like its in a different language. The problems he goes over in class are so simple, while his test questions are nearly impossible and everyone fails. Don't go to class. Read the book.
Professor Shibuya is overall a nice guy, but his lectures can sometimes be quite unclear due to his accent. He uses the textbook daily for every lectures. His exams & finals are open notes and textbook, but some of the questions are fairly challenging. I would recommend his class if you're willing to put the time and effort to study for this class.
Took him for Finance 303. He is a smart teacher and knows what he is teaching. His lectures are heavy and based on knowledge from fin350. class is tough but if pay attention you will understand the material. 1 midterm 50% , and final 50%. If you want to learn this is the class to take.
Had him for DS 212. Based on the way he grades the course, it seemed like an easy A but I checked my final grade and it was not what it was supposed to be based on his rubric so now I'm just confused and mad. Overall, his class wasn't too hard, his accent was easy to understand for me but it is thick. The material is hard but he isn't.
please please do not take this professor for finance 350. tough grader. tough lesson. hard exams. easy to fail.
I took him once at Accounting 303 class. I strongly do not recommend to take him. Although his accent is hard to hear, he still skipping a lot of steps when dealing problems. He allows cheat sheets up, but most all questions are challenging and out of normal problems. Believe your own effort instead of the professor. Hard exams with hard questions
I took him because I had no other option, I heard the stories of him being a bad professor but that is not true. Prof Shibuya is extremely smart, and yes he makes you work for it just like any other math class. He drops your lowest exam and takes your best 5 quizzes into your grade. Just do the work and show up and you will pass. Ask questions!!!!!
All the hw & quizzes are on iLearn & the exams are in class. Hw is due once a week & quizzes are in class at the end of a lecture. Quiz & exam questions are from the lectures but just with different numbers. So go to class, take good notes, use those notes for your cheat sheet, & youll for sure get an A. I HIGHLY recommend this professor.
Hard to understand, asks questions to himself, blames student habbits for his inability to convey concepts, uses shortcuts that cant be found in the reading, unclear instructions for tests, homework doesn't match in class work, does math fast and in his head, assumes students know what he is talking about. Dont take him, terrible...
Seems like a hard class at first but towards the end, he helps out quite abit. Curves your final grade along with a pretty decent finals.
Worst professor I ever had very strong language barrier makes it even more difficult to understand. Teaching style extremely hard did not learn one thing & of course failed
Very organized and clear grading criteria. If you do the work and attend lectures, youll do good in this class.
Worst professor I've ever had. I thought that if I paid really close attention to the lectures I'd be able to understand, but he constantly goes off topic, terrible handwriting (crucial to understanding math lectures), and when you ask questions about something he was unclear about; he won't answer the question, and will make you feel bad about it.
+Grading criteria are clear +Grading is fair +Course is relatively well organized -You can go to the office hours only AFTER HW is due -Some HW questions aren't clear enough -Little communication with a class during a lecture -Slides could be arranged much better Overall, not that bad. Yet, do not rely on the lectures but read the textbook.
This professor shifts weights at the end of the semester so particular homework assignments that you score well on would count for fewer points in your report, at the same time designating higher weights to homework assignments that you do not perform all too well. His homework assignments take the average attempts instead of highest attempts.
I have a really hard time with math and this professor made the assignments straightforward. I'm not sure why he has so many bad ratings, but he was caring outside of class when I needed feedback. If you have trouble with math and like working by yourself with feedback from time to time, I recommend him.
