Helpful and clear for students who have trouble in math. The 25 points for missing three or less classes helps a lot!
Always available to help, especially before tests. Very smart, almost too smart. I found myself lost at times but he was always there to help.
very good teacher
Very smart and compitent on the subject matter. Teaches the subject matter with clarity and is easy to understand.
5 points added to final grade if you miss 3 or less classes...available before and after class for help...homework is OPTIONAL...curves all tests based on class average...drops lowest quiz...makes himself more available for help around test time
Dr. Shen is a great professor. His grading can be a little tough, but he teaches very clearly. Five percentage points added to your grade for missing 3 or less classes helps. He's very funny. Grading scale is leniant to compensate for toughness of grading
very cheerful guy, can laugh at small stuff
Extremely nice professor and funny too. He seems to care about student performance and is very available for extra help.
All roads lead to stockton!!!
He's the greatest teacher in the world!!
tries to make class fun by making stupid jokes
This guy was born to teach. enuf said.
Great professor. hard grader but is definilty there to help. Extra point definitly help at the end.
This guy is a very fair grader and knows how to teach and keep the class interested in the lesson. definatly born to teach
Dr.Shen is an extremely nice man, and a good teacher. Only thing is, he teaches everything painfully slow. If you don't understand the material, this is a good thing, but if you're on top of it, it can get frustrating. He is helpful and cracks corny jokes that make you laugh. Recommended.
Greates professor at Stockton! He's easy to understand and is willing to help you at any time! Do the homework and you'll do great!
Hard course to take over the summer. Take during fall/spring and you will probably do well.
Great guy. Knows his material very well. Highly recommended. Great class.
Are all of these people kidding? This guy is HARD. He grades on midterms and finals. Which are impossible. I dont know what these other people that rated him are smoking. He is kind of hard to understand. Needs to be corrected sometimes. Hard Grader. Basically takes points of for every little thing. Class was also VERY VERY BORING!!
RIDICULOUS. he gives a quiz every day, and takes off points for EVERYTHING. he can hardly speak english, he can't spell, and he expects you to know everything because he says it is common sense. STAY AWAY.
This class was easy at first, but got a lot harder. Shen was difficult to understand, but once you get used to it, it isn't too bad.
Great professor!! Very clear and will help out when needed. Sometimes he does not understand students' questions, but all professors have a hard time understanding sometimes too. Will definately recommend him!
Great teacher. Hard but fair. His class was the best math class I've had in my life, and it was really good not dreading going to it. The last couple of chapters got very difficult, and really hurt my grade (I went from a strong A to a weak B).
Awesome teacher! I've only had him for 2 weeks for calc II and I can already tell he knows like everything there is to know about calc and that it makes it so much easier to learn.
an awesome teacher!! the people that complain are just ****n' because they made careless mistakes on an EASY quiz. he goes step by step so no one gets left behind. it might be boring if you understand the material, but if you don't, you're in luck. he is a very nice guy and he is NOT hard to understand. maybe if people actually cared to listen....
he made my life miserable he can't speak english and was nice but not a good TEACHER.
merciless. Very boring professor. He is very brutal on grading quizes and test.Doesn't miss a point while grading paper.
good teacher. attendance matters(physical and mental). but other than that its easy. upper level classes get difficult but for the majority of you taking calc or discrete shen is the man.
Very good teacher, one of the best I had at Stockton. He makes Calculus a challenge, but you learn a lot when you follow. He doesn't allow the use of a calculator, which makes it more difficult, but you end up understanding graphs better. Got a hard earned A in his course!
i didnt understand a word he said. and he lauged at me when i told him that i needed help b/c i couldnt understand him. he seems like he means well he just isnt helpful at all. and is so hard to understand
Great Teacher!! Took him for both Calc 1 and 2. Explains everything in detail and always willing to help. Take notes and do the hw and you will do fine. I got a A- in his class.
You need to pay attention, but he teaches the material and makes it understandable. He doesn't make you memorize formulas you won't use again without looking them up anyway.
Excellent teacher. Able to teach very complicated concepts in a methodical and logical manner. Challenging class but he takes the time to make sure you're keeping pace. I liked his teaching style alot! You walk out of the class knowing the material. Good guy and fair - took for 2 or 3 statistics/math classes.
By far the best teacher on the face of the planet. The way he teaches, the set up of the class, hw, quizzes, tests...all perfect. He's got the same routine for all his classes and knows exactly what he's doing. Shen is a funny guy. He's so rediculously nice and helpful. Very very smart man. I love him and recommend him to everyone for any class.
Don't kid yourself, this is a hard course. On the first two tests the class average was a 55.5%. Also, Dr. Shen is a very hard grader. Anything on your paper is "fair game" so be sure to erase anything that is not part of your answer. I didn't feel that his lectures prepared me for the homework, tests or quizzes and the textbook is horrible.
"Let me clean up things over here I don't think I need them anymore."
He's a very smart man when it comes to math... but one time he tried to use chalk on a whiteboard. Class consists of 2 tests and a final with one quiz every week. He's a good professor overall.
ROFL bc comment below. He's so polite+ funny w/ his azn accent. U'll hear "I dun no...student may wonda" a lot. By the end of class, his pants are filled w/ chalk. <3s $ analogies. Generous curves. I ended with a 108 avg. Do probs not assigned and go math tutor center so they show u easy way bc shen shows u the hard way most of the time.
He's a nice guy in general but he didn't help at all if someone had a problem. Youll here "we make the impossible.. possible ya" probably 10 times in one class. if you need help, he'll tell you to do the homework 3 times and thats it.
sweet man! very friendly and helpful. will clarify anything for you.go to his office hrs 4 xtra help.quizzes every mon boost up ur grade if u do well. tests r a lil difficult but he is a fair grader. love shen!
Calculus 1: Do your HW and you'll be good. Tests and quizzes are taken from the HW, exams can be difficult but prepare for them and attend all but 3 classes and get a bonus come the end of the year.
Had him for Calc 1. Not an easy class but the quizzes help. I didn't do so well on the first test so i had him go over it with me and he gave me an extra 4 points. Always go to class, attendance is a grade booster (25 points). Ended up with a hard earned B+. nice guy, hated him at first now i like him, sometimes hard to understand though.
if you are not a math major, dont take him. this class is basically impossible and even if you are struggling he doesnt really care how much effort you are putting in. he curves on the tests but it still isnt very helpful in the end.
nice guy, but if u struggle in math u will struggle in his class. he assumes u know exactly what he is talkin about. this is a class to take when u do not have 3 or 4 others to take.
He is a great teacher, he really cares if a student dosent understand a problem and does class exercizes to help understand the concept. There are quizzes every Monday but its not too bad as long as you study and look over examples over the weekend. Very easy class if you have a good understanding of Calculus I.
Had him for the actuaries course. Honestly one of the best teachers because he makes you work hard. attendance wasnt mandatory but if you came to all but 2 classes you get 25 extra points. You cant hesitate to ask a question, and not a class or teacher to take if youre looking for an easy A or B. If youre a Math major youll love him.
Shen is THE MAN! He loves what he teaches and it clearly shows. He is definitely a must take for anybody who enjoys math and analytical thinking! If you speak up a lot, you will do well!
Shen cares about all his students and will help you as much as possible. I'm not gonna lie, his classes are extremely tough. But if you attend class and ask questions, he is always willing to stay after class to help you. Love Shen!!
Calc 2 has 11+ quizzes, 2 exams, & 1 final with no calculators but you can bring a formula sheet. He curves generously on exams and gives 5% of your grade back for good attending all but 3 classes. Shen is the most adorable & caring teacher who makes hard concepts become understandable. While there is a lot of ungraded HW - do it and you'll be fine
Tricky quiz questions.. do every homework problem and study the textbook. Ask him for help if you need it.. Good guy but hard teacher.. He drops all lowest quizzes past 10 quizzes
Shen is one of the nicest professors there is. However, he isn't clear with his teaching and makes an easy problem seem hard by the way he does it. Easy material but hard to understand material the way he teaches.
Avoid at all cost. He is hard to understand&makes his quizzes difficult. he says there are many ways to approach a problem, but really you have to do his way or else you are wrong. I had to correct his math so many times in the course and he told us the text book is wrong. Our class failed the second test and the final so he had to curve. AVOID HIM.
Professor Shen is an awesome professor. It's true that he's difficult, but he curves accordingly. As long as you consistently complete your homework and ask for help during office hours, if necessary, you're sure to do fine. Extremely nice guy... never had a teacher that loves their job SO much.
I had Dr. Shen for 4 classes when I went to Stockton 2003-2009. I always looked forward to his lectures. He loves what he does and is extremely nice & intelligent. I aced all his classes and learned a lot as a math major. He is an amazing professor and person. People who give him a low rating are probably just babies who want an A handed to them.
(Calc 2)He's a really nice guy and offers his time to help you, but he's a tough grader (then curves the grade, but his tests and quizzes are pretty hard and its a lot of work. All of his questions come from the homework, but he assigns a lot; so be prepared
I thought Dr. Shen was a wonderful professor. Calc II can be a very challenging subject, but he presented the material very clearly. Doing the homework is the secret to the class, and the tests mimic the quizzes. Work hard and you'll be rewarded.
I took precalc in high school and that's the only reason I did well. Dr. Shen is pretty hard to understand because he talks low and has a relatively thick accent. I don't recommend without previous knowledge of precalc. He does provide many ways of help though. You'll pass with a lot of homework and studying.
Great professor for calc 2. Quiz every week, counts highest 10 quizzes, 2 exams, and a final. The HW isn't mandatory, but it helps out a lot in understanding the material. Participate in class, do the hw, amd study for the exams and you will do fine.
Dr. Shen has realistic expectation. He allows a 2 sided 8"x11" formula sheet for every exam. The exam problems are straight out of the homework, and they were not even the hardtricky problems. He starts every class with about 30 minutes of answeringsolving homework problems. He clearly explains what to do and why you must do it that way.
Took Shen for Calc II. He's a really good professor; he really takes his time with the examples and will explain anything you don't understand. If you do not already have a decent understanding of Calc I and some Pre-Calc fundamentals, I would suggest steering clear of this course. You can tell he really loves what he does.
If you struggle with math, DO NOT take this course. He only grades quizzes once a week and the tests, leaving you with no backbone from homework and other grades. He doesn't explain how to do anything, he just does it and expects you to know it. So if you struggle, do not take him as a teacher. He is a genuinely nice guy, but that only goes so far.
Great professor ! Quiz every week, counts highest 10 quizzes, 2 exams, and a final. The HW isn't mandatory. Be sure to do the hw, it really helps a lot. Allowed one cheat sheet on the exams, and two cheat sheets on final. Really nice guy, and funny sometimes. Would like to take him again!
I took him freshman year for precalculus. He's a very nice man who is very passionate about what he does. He always asks if anyone has any questions. It's up to you to ask for help if you're not clear on anything, and he would gladly help you out.
Super easy as long as you pay attention. Always tries to lighten the mood with jokes. Gives curves on the exam and an extra 25 points to your final grade as long as you have 3 or less absences. There are quizzes every Monday. Quiz and test questions are usually similar to homework and class examples. One of the nicest professors at Stockton!
Dr. Shen teaches extremely well; clear & concise in regards to the concepts for Calc 2. Attend class frequently for 25 points added to your final grade out of 500, it helps! His grading style becomes more stringent as the semester progresses, especially w/ chapter 9, so makes sure you're completing questions correctly. Overall, I highly recommend.
Dr. Shen is a reasonable fellow. He knows where students are struggling and is willing to help. He does count attendance so don't be late or skip. His quizzes are weekly and cover 2 lessons so prep for those. His tests are brutal but if you study harder than you have ever done in your life, you'll be fine. Or else, you are not in the right place.
He is an extremely hard teacher. he doesn't grade homework so your grade is from quizzes and tests and the final. He has a very heavy accent and he is very hard to understand. If you struggle with math then don't take his course. Without previous pre-calc experience the class is extremely hard.
Pre-calc. Quiz every monday, two tests and a final. A lot of homework but doesn't check so it's up to you. He makes corny jokes that lighten up the mood and gets to know each student by name. He is extremely encouraging and takes the time to recognize your progress in class. He is an extremely intelligent man dedicated to helping you achieve.
He is obviously a very smart man, but he should not be in the classroom. He has a very thick accent, so he can be very hard to understand at times. He also does not explain things well at all and half the time doesn't even answer your questions. If you take him, be sure to utilize the tutoring center and study groups. Avoid him if you can.
Dr. Shen is a very sweet, caring man, but he does have a bit of an accent that can be hard to understand at times and can be boring. He makes frequent dad jokes and is funny. I'm terrible at math so this class was hard, but he is an extremely fair grader, is always available to help, and gives HUGE curves. Homework isn't graded but helps you learn.
Makes easy concepts rather confusing. Good man though don't get me wrong.
He has a strong accent but I found very it amusing, especially when he tried to make a joke. A quick little laugh goes a long way in a stressful class like this. The content is extremely difficult but he goes slow, for a math class. He really cares about his students. He's gone out of his way several times for me and others to help them understand.
Best Math professor I have ever had. He answers all questions very thoroughly and won't stop explaining until you understand the material. He has very well put together lectures and is a fair grader. He gives you extra credit for showing up to class (5% on final grade if you have 3 absences or less unexcused). If you do the homework, you do great.
Shen is a great professor!!! Stats 1 is a hard class!!! Take clear notes and DO ALL OF THE HOMEWORK! Quizzes, midterm, and final questions are all extremely similar to homework questions from the textbook!!! Shen gives a lot of fair partial credit!
Professor Shen has very lengthy lectures but explains each topic in depth to make sure each student understands it. He always answers questions and is available outside of class. Has a quiz every Monday, two tests, and a final exam. Drops three lowest quiz grades and you get 25 pts of extra credit if you miss less than 3 classes. Highly recommend.
If you show up to class, pay attention, and do the homework, you shouldn't have an issue passing. He answers every question you may have and is very understanding. He does take points off easily on tests and quizzes, but tries to give you a fair amount. Drops worst three quizzes and usually gives makeup exams. Make sure you study!!!!!
Quiz every Monday. Two tests and a Final. No homework is graded but it is assigned. I would personally avoid taking his class if I could do it over.
I have never known math so well because of him. Professor Shen gives curving, he will drop the lowest quiz if you never missed any, will give points for attendance. Doesn't grade homework, however, the homework is essential for passing the class. Two tests and a Final, very heavy with many questions. Will answer every email related to homework.
Makes a lot of corny jokes. Hes nice but grades tough. Partial credit is rare. Hw doesn't count toward grade. Extra credit is available. Cheat sheet for equations for exams. Teaches half the lesson and in the exact way he wants to. No review sheet for midterms, only Q&A. Make sure to take notes and use wileyplus or avoid the prof altogether
Straight forward, lets you have a formula sheet on tests and final, HW is not required but helps and if you miss less than 3 classes you get 25 points(5%) extra added to your grade. He is a great professor.
Overall enjoyable but some of the material could have been taught better IMO. If you have no basis in algebra II or pre-calc this class will be a little tough. Earn 25 points for skipping three classes or less, it really helps in the end. Drops lowest three quizzes, 2 tests, final. Make sure to study for tests and make note of trick questions.
Professor Shen is a very fair professor and he makes everything clear cut and dry. He gives quizzes once a week but he only keeps the ten highest quiz grades. His quizzes, tests, and final are challenging but very fair just be sure to study. Lectures can get boring, he loves participation, he really knows his stuff, and he is very nice.
Only gives three exams and a cumulative final. Has a quiz (2-3 questions on each)every week and only keeps the best 10, which is a great thing. The cumulative final review is useless and some of the final was on things we never went over in class (double checked with other students and they said the same thing). Great at going over the material.
Quizzes every Monday. If you don't put hours upon hours of work into his class, you won't do well. He does answer any and all questions you have. However, sometimes these answers aren't helpful. Your grade consists of quizzes and the rest exams. There is no extra credit. But, he does curve exams and +5 points (out of 500) for 3 or less absences.
A knowledgeable professor, but not the best at teaching his material, made things much more complicated than they needed to be. The final was worth 50% of our grade, lectures dragged on, he would go over small concepts and an example then say we were done with the section. Fair professor overall (in other courses), would not recommend for stats.
Fitting how RMP uses a real gem to describe a 5/5 professor. Shen was incredible. He describes everything so thoroughly & doesnt leave anyone wondering whats going on even tho the pace is fairly quick. Very lenient grader with his exams (curves so the class average is a C) and the weekly quizzes arent anything to sweat. Awesome, wholesome guy
He does make the quizzes and exams difficult. If you study everyday you will do great. I took his precalc and calc and did well in both. The two classes are structured the same. The quizzes have two questions and I failed 8/10. There are three exams. 10 questions each, he curves them A LOT! I honestly would take him again, very descriptive/helpful
I took Yujin Shen for PreCalculus - Wrong move. DO NOT TAKE YUJIN SHEN IN THE MIST OF THIS PANDEMIC, he goes way too fast for lectures and brushes over the topics. When he does explain the material, he makes it way more complicated than it needs to be. He grades tests so harshly and is very specific. Overall, just don't take him. 0 stars.
Had him for precalc in Fall 2020 (online). He's really nice but was not the best at explaining what was going on. HW is assigned most days but he doesn't check. 3 question quizzes every monday. Nice bonus on the final if you have less than 3 unexcused absences (Very lenient with this)
Shen is kind and can be easily reached, but he is a tough professor if you are not excellent at math in general. He breezes over topics quickly and expects you to learn the concepts with few examples. This is the second course I've taken with him and I might not recommend him to students who don't find math their strong suit.
Dr. Shen is a really good professor. Being online definitely helped, but his examples and notes were really thorough. Even though the homework isn't graded, do it because he uses them on the quizzes and tests. If you are not a test person, I'd avoid this class.
He breezes over topics, so you need to spend more time comparing lectures to the book. He doesn't allow calculators and all quizzes/exams are taken over zoom which is annoying. Overall, if u want to take precalc take it with a diff prof like Shannon Keough
Loved Shen when I took his Precalculus class this semester (Spring 2022). He always thoroughly explains each and every topic, which is why I was shocked to see another review stating otherwise. Shen always takes two questions from the class prior to taking the quiz on quiz day for further knowledge. I'd recommend taking his class over Renga.
I only got an A because the class was online, if it were in person I would have gotten a lower grade. I would ask a question and he would give me a totally different answer, so I had to repeat the question until he understood me.
His explanations and lectures tend to be very lengthy and sometimes hard to follow, but he makes sure everyone understands the lesson before moving on. Quizzes were 3 questions, usually very easy. Homework not graded and very straightforward.
A soft spoken, humorous and clearly knowledgeable professor, Yujin Shen has an acquired teaching style I had difficulty understanding. On multiple occasions a lot of what we learned in class didn't directly line up with the homework assigned. He is always willing to answer questions however, and clearly cares for the success of his students.
While the professor is well meaning and will gladly listen to your questions, his lectures are hard to follow and tend to assume you know the components involved already. He assigns optional homework, but there's material on it that wasn't in class. He also only grades quizzes and tests which ends up being quite unforgiving in terms of grading. Ow.
his exams are easy asl. do the homework. despite it being optional the quizzes sometimes feature a problem from the homework, or are very similar. his exams are very easy as well. make sure your notation is spot on. honestly, if you study and do the hw, theres no way you wont pass.
He truly tries hard for all students to pass his class: gives an attendance bonus, curves tests, and repeats questions on exams. He never makes anyone feel stupid for asking questions and is always happy to help outside of class. An extremely smart and kind man.
Good old guy. Tries his best to go slow and convey information to the class, puts too many periods at end of equations for no reason, starts to get confusing when the is small writing with dots in random places. Overall tries his best to try n get erry1 to pass. 13 quizzes, 3 dropped, 2 exams, 1 final. Extra Credit of +5% if less than 3 absences.
Dr Shen knows HOW to teach, not just what to teach. To do well in class: do the homework, ask questions. Every class he takes 1 or 2 questions from the homework (you pick) to go over in great detail. He will not make you feel bad for asking a "dumb" question. Sit in the front of class. He takes up the entire board, you will miss stuff!
Great professor. Lecture-based class so make sure you are taking notes. Homework is not collected but it is best to do it as tests and quizzes are based off of the homework. Attendance is taken so make sure you attend; there are also points added to your grade if you miss less than a certain number of classes. Would definitely recommend him.
Shen's lectures can be tough to follow, but he's approachable and willing to help. Use the textbook, weekly quizzes, and study tools like unstuck study to stay on top of the material. Doable with dedication.
I've had Dr. Shen for both Calc II and III. His lectures are the best I've ever attended and you come out of each one truly understanding the content. He does spend a lot of time covering the content, but it is only to reinforce understanding. Assessments are not bad at all, but you must do the homework to prepare for them. Absolutely take him.
Dr. Shen was an amazing professor for Calc 3. It's 80% exam and 20% quiz for your grade, but there is a 5% extra credit on your final average for good attendance! He's understanding, wants you to succeed, and if you're willing to put in the work, you will excel. I am taking him again for probability & statistics next semester! What a great guy!
He is super sweet and wants his students to be successful. If you ask him for help he will do his best.
Shen is a great teacher. Grade breakdown: 25% is weekly quizzes, 25% is the midterm, 50% is the final. He's a very easy grader for the final, so if you study, it's a grade booster. Also, if you have less than 4 unexcused absences, then you get 5% added to your overall average. HW not mandatory, but the quizzes and exams are very similar to it.
