She definitly knows her stuff but she moved rather fast. She also would get distracted by students.... like she'd stop class completly just to point out that someone was sleeping. And she gets extremly mad if you start packing up early.... she teaches up to last second of class
This was not a tough class as long as you showed up for all the meetings and took notes. The quizs followed right along with the material that we did in class. She was very helpful with any questions. As long as you weren't late, didn't fall asleep,or have your phone ring then you were a good shape.
very hard to understand, knows material well, but doesn't let you ask any questions.

I'll have to say that she is very fast! Her class sometimes seems like it'll never end just because she takes up to the very last second to teach. Oh by the way, don't fall asleep and don't be late!
She was very fast paced and very boring. Good luck paying attention.
She is an awful teacher. You can not understand her and she poorly teaches the material. She thinks that her students are in grade school and will not even let you use the bathroom.
I never gotten anything below an A on anything in her class. It was easy because i had good high school teachers. My high school teachers explained things way better and easier, so i already knew how to do everything before i came in. I can see how she is unclear and not a very good teacher. But i loved to watch her walk around for 1hr15min,HOT
This teacher was hard to understand. She would make mistakes and after people would point them out to her she would have to go back and basically start over that confused me.She hated our class and would lecture us about behavior everyday.I had to drop her class because I did not understand anything and if I asked for help I still didn't understand.
She has to be about the most impossible person to understand in the world. She cant teach the material at all and I feel like I was going in circles. It was the longest 1 hour 15 mins of my life. She treats u like u r in grade school. That class sucks!
I couldn't understand one word she said....I showed up mostly just for quiz and test days and still got a B in the class
she's a little asian hotty. Hard to understand, but she'll work with you if you come to her. She is nicer than she lets off, get to know her on a personal basis
Her accent may be hard to understand, but she clearly explains how to do everything in the lesson.
May is a really good Colg Alg teacher. She was a little hard to understand at the begining of the semester, but now I don't even hear her accent. She is very clear about her expectations and class requirements. The material is a review of HS Colg Alg and she explains things step by step. If you attend and pay attention, this class is not hard.
I really liked May. She was hard to understand at first, but once you get past the accent its okay. She moves really fast paced, if you don't understand something she is willing to work with you, but won't take too much time to explain durring class. I found the book very helpful! If you go to class, take notes, and do the homework you will do fine
Unless you have time to go to the math lab for help avoid her. Difficult to understand very fast pace, usually one example per section and no time for questions during class. Her philosophy on tests is that if it takes her 50 mins to do it should take you an hour so they are very long.
hard to understand and moves to fast
May is a mixed bag as far as instructors go. She is very nice and willing to help any of her students but her lectures are next to pointless. Unfortunately, she does have an attendance policy. Her english is not as bad as people like to say it is and she can be easily understood. However, if you have a choice, I would still avoid taking her.
Ms May is an extremely helpful teacher, she gives summarized sheets for almost every ch. sections. Her lectures is pretty much straight forward. Quizes and Exams are from example problems in from lectures && homework problems. She may seem a little strict but really she is easy going you. Easy A if you take notes, do hw problems, & attend lecture.
Her accent was unbearable, made at least two mistakes per class period and got extremely defensive when the class tried to correct her, and talked down to the students when answered a question wrong. Highly recommended you do not take her and if you do get stuck with her, make sure you have a lot of time to spend at the math lab.
Sometimes it is hard to understand her but that is not the problem. She treats everyone like they are two years old and does not like it when you point out what she has done wrong. The class is so easy I feel like I am going to die of boredom. I suggest you take anyone but her because of how slow the class is and how uninteresting the teacher is.
PROS: Friendly; Helpful if needed; Speaks clearly. CONS: Teaches as if students are at a grade school level which makes lectures extremely pointless & boring; Mandatory attendance and will remove you if you miss more than 5 days regardless of grade; Often makes mistakes. If attendance will be an issue for you for any reason, avoid her at all costs.
She can be difficult to understand at times, and spends too much time telling you to study the material, when she could be teaching you instead. Class attendance is mandatory, and lectures often go at a slow pace, but there is often still time to ask questions about specific problems. Overall not bad, but weigh your options for Calc I.
This professor was extremely helpful and if you pay attention in her lectures she goes through similar examples that are found on the exam. Be prepared to put in the effort, this is Calc 1 not a blow off class so this should be expected. Posts work sheets on BB that are found on the exams as well.
She is extremely helpful and teaches the material very well. She answers all questions and goes through many examples until you understand. Go to class everyday, take all the notes, and do the examples she suggests and you'll pass easy.
A little hard to understand at times but if you take notes from the book you will be fine. Tests are not hard if you study and she does drop 2 quizzes at the end of the semester. Overall, an okay class.
I had her for 120 last semester, and am taking her again for 125 now.She is very helpful and willing to go out of her way to help a student succeed. She seems strict at first, but that's just because she is wanting the respect that she deserves. It was hard for me to understand her at first, but now I don't even notice her accent.I enjoy her class.
She teaches at a very quick pace. Personally, I did not like her teaching style and basically had to teach myself the work. If you end up stuck with her, make sure you do the homework and get as much outside help as you can if you still do not understand. Good luck!
NEVER TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Ms. May can barely speak English and has no apathy for her class. She is bar none the worst professor I have ever had. With a short temper, the inability to accept that she makes mistakes, and an overall bad attitude this class was miserable.
I couldn't pay attention to her for the whole lecture.
I have never hated a class or teacher in my entire life. Then I took Calculus with Yukiko May
She's very thorough, but if you don't work outside of class, you probably won't pass. Very strict about having people in class before class starts, so don't take the class if you know you'll be late often
AVOID! If I could give this professor a lower rating I would. She was very rude, condescending and incredibly unprofessional whenever speaking to her students. The material was hard and if you were struggling she wouldn't really offer any help. I asked for a tutor recommendation once and then she just started telling me how horrible I am at math.
She just reads from the book and doesnt actually provide insight into the material. Make sure you have an easy time with math before taking her. Also, avoid her if you like a laid back class. Class should be enjoyable and not taken completely serious all the time. Life is too short for that type of environment.
Very strict on cell phone usage which I don't understand, but as long as you show up and do most of the homework you will get an A. If you don't do your work then you will get the grade you deserve.
Really sweet and light hearted. I did very well in the class. She won't sugar coat grades but quizzes are easy and she drops your two lowest quiz grades and homework is all on webassign which I didn't think I would like but ended up loving it. I would take her Calc one class in a heart beat if it fit in my schedule.
Passed Mose of the Quizzes with A's However when it came to the Tests I failed them all. Good Luck
Took Professor May for Math 152 and Math 250. As long as you make an effort and are trying, you should be fine. Lectures are clear for the most part, some proofs get a little hard to follow but she's always available in her office and takes questions in class.
May is stern and strict but she does know what she's talking about. I really only disliked the course just because the material was hard, it wasn't so much her teaching. I'm kind of scared of her.
Professor May is the hardest and the best teacher I have ever had. If you try and work for it, you will pass. If you skip class and give her little respect, then you will probably fail. She cares for the students that want to work hard and learn. Show up every day and give her attention and she will work with you.
Notes in class were hard to follow. She is good if you go to her office hours. If not, it's very tough because many lectures were very hard to understand. Also, tests are very tough so study hard.
Prof May will tell you the first day of class she feels strongly that there are many profs that pass students that shouldn't. The pride she takes being tough is sick. It will take you a week till you understand her accent. She won't accept doctor's notes. If you must take her, visit her office hours and try to form a bond with her.
Professor May is a difficult teacher, but she is difficult in the interest of setting you up to succeed in Calculus 3. If you do not need to take Calculus 3, then she may not be the professor for you. If you decide to take her class, it is very important to visit her during her office hours, as she does care about how you do in her class.
Very hard to understand, has a very quick temper, always mad about something. She takes way too much pride in being a hard teacher. Lectures ever single minute of class and does not seem to care if people pass her class. Had to get a lot of help outside of class due to poor lectures. Very dry and boring. I passed but I would never take her again.
I think that Professor May expects her students to work hard to understand the concepts. Her quizzes and tests were easy as long as you can do and understand the book assignments. She expects you to show up and pay attention. She really doesn't ask for anything that shouldn't be expected of a student in any college class.
She is very strict and mean when you didnt follow rules to a T, wether your 5 minutes late or using ANY technology in class. She didnt respect the class and said we werent the brightest students. Nobody in the class was a math major, it was just a required course we had to take, and she taught it like we had a great knowledge of math before.
Yukiko May made calculus easy to understand and cared if her students came to class or not. She is a strict professor, but she knows the material well and can teach it so that her students succeed. If I had to take another math class I would definitely take her again. If you go to class and do the homework you will at least get a B.
She knows her subject, so she'll teach in depth. Her lectures are long, note-taking highly recommended, but she'll give out study guides. Clear grading criteria; quizzes are medium difficulty, tests are mid-hard. I would take her again, but if she thinks you're slacking off, she'll be rather rude, which makes for awkward office hours (personal exp)
Be ready to study. She expects you to put in the time to get the grade.
Mrs May is good and if you put in the work you'll do fine with her. She might be a little hard to understand sometimes but she will do her best to help you with the work. Doesn't take attendance so that's a plus
I got a 60 on one test and 80 and above on the final and other 2 test and i still got a C. She gave us 3 test each worth 20% of your overall grade and the final was 25% of your overall grade. Then she gave us quizzes worth 5%, homework was 5% and classwork was 5%.
Excellent lecturer. Exams are entirely fair if you keep up with the examples done in class. Most exam problems are based off of either examples or homework problems. TAKE HER CLASSES
If you show up, do the homework and put fourth an effort you will pass. Shes not an easy professor however she is a really good at actually teaching. She explains things very well and is always willing to help, exams are fair, and quizzes are basic examples and she drops the lowest scores. I would take her again
A lot of people don't like her for Calc I because they don't work, but she's great as long as you don't text in class, don't fall asleep, and do your work. She's a better prof in other courses later down the road. You will def learn calc by the end but she's tough & answers questions like you should have already known. Be nice to her & you're fine
Much better than her Calc I. Her lectures are great, she's hilarious, has fun with students, & you learn a ton. This was my fav & easiest math class by far. Do your work, don't jack around, & you'll get an A. Don't text in class cuz she'll yell at you for 5 min then kick you out (happened). My one gripe is she'll wonder why you have any questions.
Professor May is one of the best professors I have had. I went into this class thinking that she wasn't great because of previous reviews, however she is amazing. She teaches with knowledge, and she cares about her students. She wants you to pass and wants you to learn. If you are there to take a blow-off, she isn't the professor for you.
Dr. May is really good at explaining and the good thing is that she would go over all the steps so even though you forgot basic stuff from the classes before like precalc or even algebra, she would go over problems with every single step. Don't miss any classes and highly recommend going to the enrichment session because they are very helpful
If say you are confused she will become incredibly offended and tell you that you are a bad student. I was trying to get better at math and when I struggled she proceeded to throw my transcript in my face and made me feel like I had no right to be in her class or ask her for help. Teachers should work to help students improve not belittle them.
Do not take Calculus 150 if you have no calculus background. You will regret it as I am right now -_-.
Dr. May is a great prof. A lot of people don't like her because she doesn't allow phones and her humor can come off as abrasive and rude. Its just her accent. She explains everything thouroghly, and takes the time to see that ever one has different struggles with math. And she does her best to help you. Best math prof I've ever had.
Calc II is a tough class no matter who you have as a professor. She has an accent that takes some getting used to and the language barrier makes asking questions a little harder. Respect her and don't get on your phone while she's teaching. Go to her office hours if you are struggling and she will help and greatly appreciate your dedication.
the meanest teacher ever!!!!
Perhaps the closest teacher I've gotten to a real life Pontius Pilate. She'll constantly insist that she doesn't take responsibility for failure, even when that might be true. If you are taking a class with this professor, I highly recommend you are doing so for a Calculus heavy major like Engineering, or you are going to have a very rough time.
Professor May gets a lot of hate. But she's actually the best math professor I've had. Yes she's super strict, but she can teach difficult concepts extremely well. I found her lectures much easier to understand than any other professor I've had. If you want an easy class, this isn't for you. But if you want to really understand the subject, take it
She is honestly an amazing lecturer. She is difficult, but she is very clear about what you must do to succeed. Exams are a very large part of your grade, but she never stops trying to build connections. She oftentimes will explain why a concept is important for other disciplines, which is nice. Take her if you are a math major.
If you read the book and do the suggested exercises you'll be golden. If she sees your working hard and knows you by name you will have no problem succeeding in any of her math courses. Make sure you show up to class because she knows if your gone. I missed one class because I was at home sick and she hounded me.
She was not a bad teacher, the class is just lecture-heavy. I remember trying not to fall asleep in class because I had her for an hour and a half every day. About half my class dropped because the tests can be pretty difficult. Overall she isn't bad if you are good at math.
Dr. May is strict and isn't the friendliest person you'd meet. However, she is an excellent professor! Her class is the most clear and well organized class I've ever taken. She is very clear about what you need to know for the exams and makes sure you go over it in class. She replies to emails quickly, and is always open to help when you're stuck.
Horrible at explaining the content we learned and never made anything clear. She was super strict and gave us no freedom for a class we were paying to be in. Very boring class and lectures
I don't know why she has a low rate, she's great. I got a C because of me, nothing to do with her like I said she's great.
May would constantly belittle us as a class and every lecture was uncomfortable. She would always criticize us when our average came out low for our exams. However, when over half of the class drops, I think it speaks more of the professor than us as students. I've never gone below a B and I had to drop the class.
May isn't the worst teacher I have encountered by any means, but she's also no where near the best. She can be a bit passive aggressive at times. Overall, her teaching ability isn't awful, but because she wants to do every single section in the book, she can't seem to pace herself correctly. It felt some sections were very rushed through.
Ensure to read the entirety of the chapter before coming to class. There are no notes done in class, only examples. She will frequently complain and rant, nor does she like the use of tablets or laptops for lecture notes. Overall an absolute waste of time and provider of zero academic value.
If you do the Webassigns, you'll pass. She puts homework problems on the quizzes and tests. If you see an uncommon derivative in the homework (like arctan), expect it to be on the quiz or test. No surprises, just do the Webassigns.
Doesn't allow calculators to be used, will yell at you if you speak in class/are on your phone, gives you webassigns but makes them a very small % of your grade, will personally call you out if you don't come to class, will not let you make up quizzes or exams if you are sick, grades quizzes very harshly. I will never take her class again.
Great professor who wants you to succeed. Quizzes are easy & there are never any surprises on tests. Do the WebAssign, read the textbook sections before tests, and you will be fine. Only issue is that she sometimes teaches a bit fast--otherwise she's amazing. Not rude, just strict & has high expectations. Some of these reviews are VERY dramatic...
Babe this is your sign to not take the class, I promise any other Math teacher is better than her. RUN!
Very strict; doesn't allow any kind of electronics in her classroom. Homework assignments are worth only 5% of your grade, and so it sometimes didn't feel worth it to do a 4-5 hour assignment 2-3 times a week for little return. If you are a freshman coming into 125, make sure you're ready for it; I jumped the gun and should've taken 120.
Prof May isn't as bad as some of these reviews are acting. If you show up to class, pay attention, do the homework, and put the time & effort into truly understanding the basic concepts of the course, this class will be easy. She wants you to do good in the class & works with you if you reach out. The only thing is she doesn't post any grades on BB
May is not friendly at all. She also does not put in grades. You must calculate them yourself. When going into her office hours, she told me I don't read, and I always have a confused look on my face. Not only that, her only advice was to study more instead of helping or showing what to focus more on for exams and quizzes.
One of the rudest people I have ever met in my life. Would interrupt HERSELF to inaudibly snarl at students while they politely and quietly stepped out of the classroom for any reason. Constantly searches for opportunities to belittle and talk down to her students. Completely unacceptable behavior. Do not take if you have respect for yourself.
If you have your previous calculus knowledge down then she's a great professor. She won't reteach anything that you should've learned previously so as long as you know your stuff you're fine. If you haven't taken math in awhile, I do not recommend her. Her tests are fair and similar to the homework.
May's grading is harsh, stifling understanding. Her rudeness and strict attendance add to the stress. Not a conducive learning environment. On many occasions she snarls at students that leave, and corners them to yell at them.
Her method of teaching is very lecture intensive, if thats your thing youll do well. Other than that she can be rude and condescending at times but the class isn't too bad
don't expect much partial credit
got an A in Calc 1 and Calc 2 but had to withdrawal from Ms. May's Calc 3 after failing the first two exams... class is graded 90% on assessments and she is not one to give partial credit so avoid at all costs!!
lots of homework that makes up only 5% of your grade and exams are graded based on whether or not you follow her steps rather than the correct steps meaning that learning materials outside of class will only serve to hurt you. exams and quizzes are 90% of your grade. first class I had to withdrawal from at siue
The worst professor I've ever had. The second time I've taken this and had to drop. She REQUIRES you to do everything her way, and if you don't but your work and answer is still correct, you're getting points removed. Homework is only worth 5%. Test and quiz heavy. She is also the rudest person I've ever met. Do not take her, for your sake.
The only time I saw her smile was when a girl sitting beside me started crying during the final. But otherwise a pretty good teacher.
Professor May is not a terrible professor, just a difficult one. Her personality, however, is another story. She feels like a dictator in class and has no sympathy or care for you. I made the mistake of taking her class twice because she's the only one who was teaching. Never again. I'd just skip and take it next year with someone else.....
Lowkey rude. Tests are a big part of the class grade, which isn't the best for some (myself included). She says she gives partial credit…good luck with that. She is very vague while teaching, but with that said if you've got the material down, you're good. I'd say the amount of homework I had in this class was excessive. Good look with that final..
Yukiko May is tough but fair, if you take her class seriously and give it and her the respect they deserve you will learn more than almost any other course. If you don't, you're gonna have a bad time.
She lectured really well and always made sure to show lots of examples. She wants you to do well in her class but will get mad when you show up late or not at all. She has a tough time answering questions in class so I recommend going to her office hours.
her calc 3 exams are diabolical
Coming to SIUE from a smaller private college it was a but of a transition but I quickly adjusted to the differences around campus. Everything but Yukiko May... I only heard legends and thought that I would be fine, but was I wrong... She was very rude and unapproachable. She was also a very difficult grader who shows no mercy.
She is strict in her lectures but as long as you show up and are on time you'll be on her good side. She tells you what topics to expect on the quizzes and exams. She will put easyish questions on the quizzes and a little more difficult ones on the exams, and all the questions are similar to ones you did in class or on WebAssign. Go to lectures!
Not bad at teaching. Harsh grader, hard tests, really unpleasant to interact with. Does not respond to questions well. Will yell at you in front of everyone if you are a minute late to her lectures. Expected to read a decent amount of the textbook outside of class time.
Was confused to see these other reviews. She is not that horrible. As long as you show up on time, do your work, stay off your phone, and study, you will be just fine. She gives a lot of practice problems to do on top of the HW that are not required, but are good practice for the quizzes/tests. She was fair with grading and gave a lot of feedback.
Ms. May was a good professor. Yes, she is very strict and will not be afraid to yell at you in class if you break her rules, but, her teaching style was very straightforward and clear. During lectures she goes over pretty much every type of problem you will see on the exams. Strict grader, but she does tell you what she expects from you.
DO NOT TAKE CALC 3 WITH HER! If you're a math major, maybe, but if you are in physics or engineering avoid at all cost. Exams are unrealistically difficult with only two of them appearing in the semester, with the exams having over 65% of theory/proof questions instead of solving actual problems that you would typically solve in a normal course.
I can't believe she only has two exams in one semester, with so much background theory you need to know, it feels impossible to just get a C on just one of them. Calc 3 typically isn't difficult but professors like this make it way harder than needed. Also there is way too much homework for the little impact that it has on your overall grade. DR!
Great at teaching, but her attitude can be the biggest problem. Fortunately, near the end of the semester she started to warm up. Tests feel like a reunion tour of every calc class you've ever taken. Hard but passable if you enjoy suffering. Learned a lot, but honestly? I'd still recommend dodging this prof if you can.
May was completely unprofessional when it came to students and 'helping', she would get angry if the problems were solved using another method outside the book. I would avoid at all costs if you struggle with reading and implementing, it will not end well especially if you try and ask for help.
