Tests are hard. He has a strong accent, so it's pretty hard to understand.
Very hard to understand. Plan on doing a lot of your own reading.
Very nice guy. Thick Asian accent thou, but his class is very fair. Hands out study sheets breaking down exactly what will be on the exam. Also lets you use an 8x11 sheet to write whatever notes you want ONLY during winter/summer sessions. Small curve too
Horrible teacher. Extremely hard to understand what his is trying to say due to his accent. You will find yourself learning the material on your own.
Bad teacher. Never take his class. He has strong accent that is hard to understand.
Hard class. Not helped by thick Asian accent. Do the homework. He is very fair with grading. Tries to give you as many points as possible. Very nice guy.
If you can get past the accent the class will be fine. Tests were very fair, do the homework and you'll do well.
3 tests + final. The lowest test score (not including the final) is dropped, so each test is worth 32% of the grade. He allows a full sheet (both sides) of notes and tests primarily from lecture notes. The remaining 4% of the grade comes from attendance, which he takes four times. He also offers extra credit. Good class.
his class is easy. his tests are easy. he gives you extra credit for doing some current event.
MC & word problems are hard (although he grades liberally on word problems). He tries to give as much help with points and instructions. Although, if you do bad, he says it's cuz you didn't study and WILL NOT CURVE. Can be dictorial. Be direct on t
Loved the material. Teacher very helpful. Study his sample problems and you should be fine. He makes every effort to explain the subjet at hand. The class is a MUST.
All u need to do is study the exercises and use the study guide. No surprises.

ma is a good prof. strong accent though, hard to understand at times but he tries to break it down for you. just study the exercises, hw problems, and study guide and you should do fine. gives extra credit which can help.
Ma really knows the material well and is willing to help...if you can understand his very thick accent. Tests are fairy easy and he allows a cheat sheet even on the final.
thick accent, DO THE EC! ITS 8%!Make good cheat sheets with in class exercises(these are on the exams). I learned nothing but with my cheat sheet I got a B in the class. Class is boring, don't learn anything but must go for attendance points and financial reports - THEY HELP!
Professor Ma is very helpful. I had a really hard time with this subject and he was very patient with me during his office hours.
He's very helpful. Give specific explanations for students who might have not understood. The materials are absolutely tough, but he tries his best to make students understand the concept. He's final was the easiest; just study the examples done in the lecture. He has accent but pretty much understandable.
Ma is really laid back. There are 3 midterms + a final. He takes the best 2 out of 3 midterms + the final, + 2 group projects and 6% of your grade is based on an oral presentation of Project 2. Attendance is not mandatory, but he randomly passes a role sheet 4 times and if you miss more then 1/2 you won't be eligible for curving. Very Helpful
Prof was genuinely concerned about his students understanding the material. He tells you exactly what you need to study and with the practice problems, you should be fine. Great teacher!
HEAVY ACCENT! Hard to understand, but tests are on class discussions! Easy B if you make good cheatsheets for exams!
Ma is a great teacher. He has a slight accent, but compared to some of the other IS teachers, he's crystal clear. Finance is a horrible subject, but he made it interesting and easy. There are 3 tests + 1 final and he drops the lowest test score. Extra credit is available. He randomly passes around an attendance sheet, so attendance is mandatory.
His accent makes it difficult to understand. BUT, he allows you to use full page cheat sheet. There is no easy A in finance. Lots of calculations and concepts.
class is pretty boring, but no papers, no presentation..just 4 exams..drop your lowest one. one cheat sheet. dont really need the book either. his powerpoints are organized and clear. if you actually put in some effort..an A shouldnt be too hard!!
Don't buy the textbook! You will pass this class if you attend, follow the powerpoints, and memorize the problem sets he has you do. He only curves if your class average is below 70%, so get him in a large class if you can. Also try to do well at the beginning b/c the final is pretty tough. He is hard to understand.
He's boring but he cares about his students and makes an effort to teach the material. 4 exams, drops lowest one, and they become progressively harder throughout the semester. He gives you a study guide, one cheat sheet, and randomly takes attendance. Easy B but must work for an A.
He was a great teacher. I highly recommend taking him. All three tests were graded on a curve, with the exception of the final. Make sure you go to class because he goes over everything that will be in the tests plus its 4% of your grade, he also gives extra credit. The only bad thing (I guess), would be his accent but he'll repeat things for you.
4% of grade is based on 4 times attendance taken randomly. 4% easy extra credit. Focus on ppt slides, exam reviews, and assigned homework, because that's what makes up the majority of the exams. Best 3 out of four exams; mandatory somewhat comprehensive final; 1 page cheat sheet for exams; curves grades...
took it during the summer. 1 midterm, 1 final (non-cumulative), and a group or individual (your choice) report w/o presentation but i think u have to do one in the reg semester. takes attendance ED for like 5% of grade. allows cheat sheet for tests. read the chapters and write good cheat sheets from his powerpoints and its a very easy B, easy A too
He is a pretty cool professor. He explained concepts very thoroughly and made sure the class understood it. His study guide is basically what the test will look like so study that. You don't really need the text book to succeed but it helps for reference sometimes. He takes attendance four times in the semester for 1% each time. I would take again.
Great teacher. Gives 3 exams (drops the lowest one) and 1 non-cumulative final. There is also a group project but as long as you are in a good team, it will be easy. His exam reviews pretty much outline the exam. Would take him again.
Sometimes he is hard to understand because of the accent. 3 midterms and 1 final and drops the lowest midterm. Passes out a sign-in sheet 4 random times during semester that counts towards attendance. Offers some extra credit, but not much. Students can print out slides from his website. Provides study guides for all exams.
So this is what you do to get the A! Complete all the problems he assigns and make sure u understand them. Make sure you understand the powerpoints. There's a project which is not that hard and a presentation. He also alows a formula sheet for tests! & yes I got the A!! Good Luck!!
Easy A.. 3 TESTS (drops lowest) + 1 non-cummulative final.. allows double sided cheat sheet for test... attendence takin 4 times a semester at random.. 4 pts of extra credit
He always says, "if you need help, just ask me." But when you actually do, he says things like, "I don't explain things twice. you should have payed attention in class." His accent and handwriting are so horrible, I couldn't understand a thing he said/wrote. His tests are tricky. I didn't learn much, I don't know why I showed up every lecture...
Only the first test is mildy easy and rest of the exams are really difficult. Prof. Ma might have a PhD in Fin. but he is not a lousy teacher. It is hard to understand him sometimes b/c he has a heavy accent.
I took finance 300 with him in fall 2010 and i will take him for finance 350 for spring. Great teacher, exams are from in class exercises. 4 points of extra credit and drop the lowest Grade. Take him, he is nice guy.
A great asset to the finance department! HIs explanations are clear and to the point. His accent is not a problem AT ALL if you seat close to the board. I only studied for a few hours before each exam(including final) and got an A. I'm no genius!!
In the beginning he seems nice and his tests are pretty straight forward. It is hard to discuss with him and his English becomes annoying after a while. Some terms are hard to understand. So just read the book and you are fine.
Easy class, easier than the other professors.
He goes too fast on the lectures, his accent is somewhat of a problem. His study guides don't really help! He will ask questions that are not even assigned for the reading. Does give extra credit opportunities, and you will need it. First exam is easy, as for the rest make sure to STUDY for them!
Dr Ma is a great guy, gives you study guide and sample questions which is very helpful. Exams are fair, if you go through study guide and learn how to solve the sample questions, you will get an A.If you are Finance major and wanna learn something, take him. He has a very personality.
Dr.Ma is a great guy, gives you study guide and sample questions which are very helpful. If you know how to solve the sample questions, you will be fine. Exams are fair if you study the power-points well. Take him if you are finance major and wanna learn something. He also has a great personality.
It's fairly easy to get an A as long as you come to class and make an attempt to understand the formulas and problems. You get to drop one exam, use a 1-page formula/cheat sheet for each test, and have at least 4 extra credit opportunities. His study guides are helpful, plus he goes through chapter exercises with the whole class. Nice professor too
It was hard for me to follow the second half of the course, but if you do well on the first two exams you can coast through the final. He explains the concepts well and shows how to do sample problems which are very helpful. Take advantage of the page of notes you can bring to exams and do the easy extra credit. Makes finance very simple.
Easy class. 3 exams & 1 final; Drops lowest exam grade. Final is semi comprehensive. You want to do well on the first two exams when material is easy to understand. Concepts get more difficult to understand as semester progresses. Provides extra credit for attendance and research articles.
Three midterms and a final, and drops the lowest midterm. Offers extra credit too. One of the best FIN 300 professors you can take, if not the best.
He has a very heavy accent with a very hard class. Exams are difficult, but he drops the lowest one. Extra credit opportunities. I am a good A/B student and ended up with a B in the class because exams are difficult.
Be prepared to teach yourself. His english is very poor and is is difficult to understand his lectures.
He's very hard to understand and his writing is messy. 3 exams and 1 final. You get to drop lowest exam. 1 page cheat sheet. Computation is easy but conceptual isn't! I would not recommend him.
Can't understand him at all. Only showed for the tests & had a friend sign me in for the credit. Not to hard to teach yourself if you are an accounting major. Posts his notes and HW answers online. Tests are based off the inclass exercises and some of the HW. 3 test, drops 1, and final with one page cheat sheet. 4% attendance, 4% bonus assignments.
Dr. Ma is a very smart man, but not a very good professor. His lectures are not clear, so it's better to skip class and study the material yourself. Help he offers during office hrs is clear as mud. Limited opportunity to raise your grade if you don't do well on tests, so studying is important. I consider this another useless class in the MBA prgm.
Dr. Ma is a great professor. I enjoyed every lecture, but those for which I read in advance were the best, because his lecture then became more supplemental and of course easier to follow. I booked him for 2 more Finance classes. I definitely recommend him. 3 midterms, 1 final-semi comprehensive. (drops lowest midterm). extra credit opportunities
The way he explains things in lecture is confusing. But tests are easy, and test material is directly from the power points and in-class problems. Overall, I recommend him.
He is so confusing and a bad professor. When asked questions to clarify, he has the ability to make things even more confusing! Only Finance class I got a B in because his THICK accent and exams are clear as mud. Forget about getting a perfect score for the MC in exams..confusing!
If you enjoy teaching yourself everything, this is the class for you. Accent makes him completely impossible to understand.
He has a really thick accent. I could barely understand him the whole semester. He lets you use a 2 page study sheet during test, so they weren't that difficult as long as you studied. There was one easy extra credit opportunity a month, which was probably the main reason I got a B. I wouldn't recommend him, but it is possible to do well.
He does have a thick accent but as long as you sit up front & really pay attention you can understand. Preview chapters before class to assist in lectures. I really liked him he knows his stuff & he's low key funny. You can use a sheet with notes/formulas on the exam & gives you a study guide. Fill out the study guide well & you'll fine.
He is a nice guy, but his lectures are long and he is very hard to understand. You take 3 tests and a final and do online hw. It's pretty easy to get a B as long as you do the study guides and do well on the hw. Everyone should get at least a C. His study guides are helpful,, he isn't and his lectures are pointless and not relevant to the tests.
Professor Ma is the definition of a smart guy, but a bad teacher. He has a super thick accent and makes the subject way more confusing than it should have been. He gives examples to try to make things clear, but it just confuses students even more. You basically have to teach yourself everything. 3 exams(drops lowest exam score), a final, onlinehw
Hard to understand but he allows a one page front and back cheat sheet. The hw assignments are mandatory but do help your overall understanding. He gives 5 extra credit points by "randomly" passing out the attendance sheet (the class before a test for 4 points, randomly for the last point). I had a C then aced the final and got an A. Take him.
To be honest, this professor is good at explaining concepts well. the only bad thing about this professor is the thick accent, but he knows what he is talking about. it just requires you to really focus on what he is saying and pay attention to the lecture closely so you are able to understand. i was able to get an a by relying on his PPT & review
First off, it's finance so already this class is difficult. He rushes the slides. When he goes over the exercises in class, magical numbers would pop out of nowhere so the class would be confused to how he did the math for the problem. Attend class to get the extra credit attendance sheet.
His class is passable but you have to actually try. HIs lectures are brief and you barely take away anything. The bulk of the learning is form the in class assignments which help alot in understating the ppt lectures. Online Hw can be time consuming at times. Test are challenging but does allow a cheat sheet.
Gives good tools to succeed in a challenging class. Good examples in class and some great online tools (that you have to purchase to do the homework anyway). Homework for most chapters due before the exams. Get a formula sheet though and he curves the exams as well. One negative is he grades attendance randomly. Does release class a bit early often
His class made me change my major to Finance. He is hard to understand but just show up to earn credit (he passes attendance randomly). 5% EC offered. Homework Chegg. He allows a cheatsheet, so take advantage! His "study guide" is the review questions, which are highly similar to test questions. Read the book. I did these steps and have an A.
ANY other professor for FIN300 would be better than him. You can't understand him AT ALL because his accent is so heavy, and when students try to clarify he gets annoyed that he has to repeat himself & makes u feel dumb. Homework is on MindTap and is VERY time consuming, & he even tells you a lot of it wont even be on the exam. Huge waste of time.
Supplies good resources and gives extra credit (attendance). Definitely a smart guy who knows his stuff. His accent isn't too bad and as long as you study and do your part, it is not hard to pass. Read through your materials and ppts before asking questions because they answered many questions I had. Cheat sheets are allowed during tests.
Probably the worst Professor Ive had. He lacks so much empathy. He gets angry when people ask questions. Hes bad at explaining concepts. Three exams, he drops the lowest one. One mandatory final. Homework. He doesnt proctor at all. His exams are EXTREMELY difficult beware.
Do not take this professor for Finance 300. He is very hard to understand and does not respond well to questions. He does not explain concepts well at all and I learned more from the book than I did from any of his classes. Please take some other Finance teacher that is better if you can. Otherwise you will be teaching yourself or paying for tutors
I actually learned a lot from his class and did better than expected. A lot of people complain about his heavy accent but it wasnt too bad. He records all his lectures so you can always look back on them before the exam. Hes also very patient. I recommend going over the slides before he teaches it in class just to get an idea of the topic.
Accent isn't as bad as people say. Lots of assignments through Cengage Mindtap. Records lectures so you can look back at them. Gave extra credit opportunities.
As long as you pay attention, you should do fine. All lectures are recorded so you can refer back to them. There is extra credit as well. His accent is definitely not as bad as some people say, they may just be part of the 15% of Americans who struggle with hearing. It is also helpful to go over slides before classes.
Dr. Ma made himself available to me several times after class and outside of office hours. He basically changed my view of corporate finance by teaching me Weighted Average Cost of Capital component by component. A patient teacher, if your sincere and approach respectfully, in case you missed the concept in class, he will help. -Alok Kumar
Professor Ma is one of the most difficult teachers to understand. Its not only his thick accent, because you can get used to that, but its the side stories he is constantly going on, and the lack of focus he has. He does drop 1 exam with the lowest grade and curves the other ones which really helps. Tons of homework through cengage and 4 quizzes.
I DO regret taking his class. I had to teach myself everything in this class, If you don't like ready finance books don't take. Dr Ma is very smart but a bad teacher, concepts are not explained well due to his lack of focus. The accent is ok, makes subjects confusing when they shouldn't had been. HW is lengthy, 3 exams (drops lowest), a final.
Despite the other reviewers, I actually enjoyed Dr. Ma's class. He did give out a lot of assignments, you had to be on top of things to not fall behind. 2 excel projects 1 case study project, hw, final, 2 reflection reports. Nice prof and gets back to you when needed. Lectures are prerecorded. I liked his style, flexible & independent learning
I stopped going to his class because he explained things very poorly and had everyone even more confused after. However, you get a front and back study guide for the midterms and a two page one for the final. The lowest out of three midterms is dropped, and he curves. However, this class is extremely difficult and I don't think he helped.
Dr. Ma is an awful teacher. If you ask a question in class, he will circle the question for about 5 minutes, tell you something from 4 chapters ago, then tell you to read the text book. He thinks that around a 67% on tests is a good class average. If you take his class, you will end up teaching yourself the entire semester. Avoid him at all costs.
Dr. Yulong Ma is the worst professor I've had my entire time at this school, he cannot teach to save his life. It is an absolute joke the way he redirects any question someone asks back onto them saying how they "need to read the book or pay closer attention". The class average is 59% on quizzes. lol I wouldn't wish him upon my worst enemy.
Dr. Ma has been one of the toughest professors I have ever taken. Most of his "answers" to student questions are just him saying nonsense and he will finish it off with "pay attention" or "read the book". Lectures are rather difficult to learn from, you will teach yourself most of the course material. Average test scores were around 59%. avoid him.
lectures hard to understand, fails to answer questions directly, about 10 hw assignments done on cengage but take a long time, 3 exams & final (lowest exam score dropped), few quizzes between exams, double sided cheat sheet allowed on exams. doable class if u have some sort of idea of how to do finance, otherwise take a prof who can actually teach
Don't take this professor if you are a FIN major. He really thought the class average on the exams was a good score (around 60%). Lectures are terrible that people stopped showing up, dude doesn't like getting asked questions. Would not answer questions from students. Still not an impossible class just take it with someone who knows how to teach.
The class concepts are really easy and the slides that Professor used were helpful as well as study guides for the exams. The questions on the exam are really similar to study guide and you can have a cheat sheet, so if you put some effort you will be just fine. Homework is a little bit trickier, but still if you use his slides its not hard at all.
the peron below me who rated yulong ma as a 4, is lying. The person who wrote that is the professor himself. Avoid this class at all costs.
Real simple class, pretty clear and straightforward lectures as well as slides to accommodate them. As long as you take notes and do the homework an A is easily within reach.
Unable to schedule class correctly. 4 chapters in first 6 weeks, 3 chapters in 10 days. Unable to communicate clearly, lectures are pointless, must learn from google. Focus is 80% on math equations, guess what, we invented computers, you are now obsolete. I am 48 years old with extensive experience, not some kid just complaining. worst teacher.
Don't take this class
Average test score was 38% before the curve (only 2 overall). The first half of the semester is dedicated to groups presenting projects--he barely goes over any material during this period and you are left to figure out concepts yourself. Not great at communicating the concepts and you are oftentimes more confused after seeking clarification.
throughout his career of 30 years, his class average is a D. the prof is the problem not us students. i have never struggle this hard in my entire life. 3 midterms, lowest dropped, and final exam. THICK ACCENT. favorite phrase is "you need to understand" w/out explaining in depth.
Should not teach this class, especially at MBA level. Did not teach a single day. Only did Q&A sessions. Get a good group, you will have to write a very long excel case analysis. Does not seem to know how to teach this particular class. CSULB COB really needs to reassess their faculty for the MBA program.
Graded by 4 quizzes, few assignments,3 exams, final. Went to 1 lecture & never went back. Still passed with an A. Do what you gotta do to get good scores on the graded assignments for cushion. Use his powerpoints & book to teach yourself. Most helpful tools are the practice problems, DO THEM, & do them over n over bc theyre just like exam. Good luck
Finance is HARD. If you're dumb like me, you'll really have to study. I really liked Ma! He always told us he wanted us to pass. He does curve, he gave us extra credit in the end, he's understanding if he knows you try. Allows cheat sheets to exams! FYI: You can pass with a D if you're not a Finance major. I passed thanks to his curve!
average score on exams was under 50%. you can learn and understand a topic while doing the hw, but you will be confused when he lectures the same one. cheat sheets. i failed both exams, got an A bc heavy curves. lectures do not make sense. his lecturing style is everywhere and he blamed us for not understanding. group presentation on a chapter
Do not take this class. Professor rambles on making zero sense and gets mad if people ask questions. Constantly asks if he makes sense but if someone says no he doesn't clarify. More than 75% of students stopped showing up to class by week 3. VERY thick accent so good luck.
Great, caring professor! The concepts and calculations are difficult if this is your first finance class, but Dr. Ma is there to help. He is always available during office hours and will help if you meet him half way. Great professor, difficult subject matter.
There are 3 midterms and 1 final, he allows cheat sheets for all of them & drops one of the midterm grades or your HW grade. The average for tests was a C & he did not curve bc one person got 100%. He does say he may curve grades at the end of the semester. Finance is hard so I would definitely attend class or else you'll be lost & buy a FIN calc.
It's hard to understand Professor Ma's teaching style. His lectures tend to focus on things that don't really matter on the tests. He does seem to care about his students success and will try to help you, but he can come off as harsh sometimes. If you are already strong in finance, his class should be easy for you.
Finance isn't easy, but Professor Ma really wants you to succeed. Use the practice problems, unstuckstudy, and the free textbook - that's the key to doing well. Attendance is required, but the curve and extra credit help a lot.
This Professor was not helpful at all. His lectures had nothing to do with the exams and two thirds of the class didn't even show up for class anymore. He doesn't really teach you anything and just expects you to know it. Had to learn everything from chatgpt and the HW was a nightmare, it was so hard. He also has a thick accent.
OL Async class. pre recorded lectures. Either a Quiz or HW per chapter assigned thru Cengage, these were all due the day before exams, so you work at your own pace. 3 Midterms, lowest score dropped and a Final. Exams are on lockdown, but no vid/audio monitoring. Overall, an easy, manageable course. Take him online only if your NOT a FIN major ;)
Out of all the professors I've had, Yulong Ma was pretty bad. His lectures don't really match the homework or test material, and if students ask him a question he just repeats "You must understand!" He spent an entire lecture on CAPM formula and it was barely on the test. He does seem to care about students though, but this class is not it.
super thick accent which made it hard to understand. attendance not mandatory and lectures are not worth attending. as long as you go over his study guides and know what to do, you'll for sure pass with a B or higher (the questions are identical to the ones he posts on exams). he cares about his students and does reply to emails.
Worst professor hands down. I would rate it a 1/5 rating, but he does care about wanting his students to pass, so I'll give a 2/5.Exam 1 should be doable to pass, as the class average was around 70%. Exams 2 and 3 were the worst, so get ready to study. Lecture not mandatory, bcz slides but study the ch. problems because they dont cover it in slides
